David Feherty on life, loss and his new gig at LIV Golf | GOLF Originals

The first time I saw David Feherty was in 1991. He was charismatic, half-crazy and running the show on any bus that took the players (and the odd caddie) from a downtown hotel to a European Tour venue. He could talk Belfast politics, standup comedy, weight distribution at the top of the backswing, the Three Tenors, the late-night bar scene in Barcelona — and anything related to Seve. He was loaded with charm and good-looking to boot. That last bit was my wife’s take on him.

I was caddying then for Peter Teravainen, a European Tour journeyman from Massachusetts, and Peter’s golf skill was making life possible and interesting for Christine and me. Feherty liked Peter. Feherty likes people who think for themselves. On that basis, Feherty should like himself, but the Homo sapien is a complicated species.

More recently, I saw Feherty in Las Vegas. This was in January, five days before the Super Bowl. The whole thing scene was unlikely but Feherty’s life is unlikely. LIV Golf had a Vegas event, Feherty is the lead LIV broadcaster and my colleague Darren Riehl and I went there to see Northern Ireland’s gift to the CW for a thing we’re doing for GOLF.com called  GOLF Originals.  Feherty was to be our original  Original , a video series presented by Callaway that we’re launching, both on this site and our YouTube page , to tell the story of golf’s original thinkers.

michael bamberger and david feherty in las vegas book shop

When Feherty had his interview show on Golf Channel ,  the first of his 160 or so guests was maybe the most original of living originals, Lee Trevino . Feherty could not have had a better first subject. They both live in Dallas and Feherty went to see Buck in person and got a quick yes from the Tex-Mex golfing legend.

We got a yes from Feherty, after a wee wait. I sent a text to Dave and about a week later got this response:

Michael, nice to hear from you my friend. I’m in Bumf-ck Kansas hunting quail. Spotty cell service, so I’ll give you a shout early next week pal. Sounds like a nice project, talk to you soon. df

Now that’s a good text.

Darren and I picked up Feherty outside his Vegas hotel, the Paris. At one point he noted that the walk from his room to the hotel’s  porte cochère  was a half-mile. He offers his observations as few do.

From the moment Feherty deposited his 65-year-old self into our talkative, four-door Nissan via Hertz, Darren (the show’s producer, director, editor and adult) and I could see that something was different about Feherty. The guy riding shotgun was not the laugh-a-minute Feherty we knew from TV. He was contemplative, still, quiet.

He had just learned that his 92-year-old mother, Vi Feherty, back home in greater Belfast, had just been placed in palliative care. David’s sister was with her, but her son was 5,000 miles away and eight hours behind. It is a gift and a privilege, to see people as they actually are, to hear what is important to them, to observe them at close range. That’s where we were.

David Feherty covers the action at the 2019 Players Championship.

I had lunch with David Feherty. Here are 5 epic (and hilarious) stories he told

We drove to a Las Vegas strip-mall bookstore called the Psychic Eye Book Shop. Why? I don’t know. Something to do. He’s done enough interviews where he sits in a Windsor chair in some random clubhouse with plaid carpeting and talks about his play in the 1991 Ryder Cup . Yes, a bit and a gag, bringing him to the Psychic Eye, but a fitting one. Per a first-hit Google search on it: “Occult-oriented shop offering books, candles, incense & herbs, plus psychic readings & classes.” Dave was down with it.

I am ill-suited to this new video gig, which we plan to do monthly, as I am a lousy planner (video requires planning) and have a face for typing (the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do) and have a tendency to ramble with interview questions . (I promised Rory McIlroy the other day that he would be astonished with the efficiency of my lone question, but he could not have been.) Early in the ride out, Feherty asked, “So what are we doing here?”

“Trying to keep our jobs,” I said.

Well, yes, but also this: We’re trying to show the inner lining of some wonderful and interesting people in the game, some famous, some obscure, some in between. Golf is golf because of its playing fields, its difficulty, its weird instruments of play, but also, and maybe especially, because of the people drawn to it.

I’ve been playing golf for 50 years and writing about it nearly as long and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of this game. It feels good.

On our drive out, leaving Paris, The Strip and Allegiant Stadium behind, we saw an I-15 sign pointing the way to Reno. Feherty asked if we were going there. I asked Siri to play the R.E.M. song “All the Way to Reno.” So moody and surfy, for a song with a Nevada dateline. Feherty had a beautiful singing voice as a young man and R.E.M. loved recording in Ireland but all that is just happenstance. Well, what isn’t?

Michael Stipe, taking over our Nissan for a half-minute:

Humming. All the way to Reno. You’ve dusted the non-believers. And challenged the laws of chance.

I had failed to call the bookstore but the manager let us in with a camera anyway, after he heard Feherty’s accent. David is a beautiful and unlikely person.

Hope you enjoy the show.

Broadcaster David Feherty joining LIV Golf Invitational Series

Broadcaster David Feherty is joining the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series, according to an official release on Friday.

Feherty, known for his unique style and personality, has been a regular on NBC golf telecasts and the Golf Channel since signing with the network in 2015.

"As a storyteller, this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to help write a new chapter in this sport's history," said Feherty in a statement. "LIV Golf is developing ideas and innovations that are going to grow the audience and engage the next generation of players and fans. I'm excited by the energy LIV Golf is creating and I'm eager to contribute to a world class broadcast production that has a vision towards the future."

Feherty will make his debut at the tour's third event later this month at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. A former professional golfer, Feherty played for Europe in the 1991 Ryder Cup and won five titles on the European Tour before shifting to broadcasting in 1997.

The LIV tour already has Arlo White as its host for tournaments, which are streamed on YouTube and the LIV website. White was the longtime lead Premier League play-by-play commentator for NBC before leaving for LIV earlier this year. Analysts Jerry Foltz and Dom Boulet and on-course commentators Su-Ann Heng and Troy Mullins round out the LIV broadcast team.

TNT's Charles Barkley said he met with LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman about a possible broadcasting role earlier this week. However the Basketball Hall of Famer told the New York Post that it would need to be a highly lucrative deal for him to walk away from his reported eight-figure income as an NBA analyst for TNT and spokesperson for multiple companies.

The LIV tour has been criticized because it is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

David Feherty Is Leaving NBC For LIV Golf, and That's No Laughing Matter

David Feherty Is Leaving NBC For LIV Golf, and That's No Laughing Matter

  • Author: John Hawkins

Eoin Clarke/Golffile

While one Northern Irishman left golf's biggest stage disappointed on Sunday, another departed for a far lesser stage entirely. What is David Feherty thinking?

feherty live tour

Rory McIlroy and David Feherty are a pair of Northern Irishmen who quickly outgrew their homeland to answer the call of greatness from golf’s biggest stage. While McIlroy’s journey has been virtually seamless, Feherty had to pedal through a relatively modest career on the European Tour until stumbling into renown as a television analyst. From there, he parlayed an endless collection of quirky quips and quibbles into status as one of the game’s most dynamic personalities.

Both men love America. McIlroy established his preference for the PGA Tour even before he won the first of his four major titles, all by the age of 25. His countryman was given the 2012 Outstanding Civilian Service Award for years of tireless contributions to those who served in the U.S. Army. Feherty would be the last guy you’d expect to bolt from a cushy job at a major network for a similar position with LIV Golf , which fends off a comprehensive lack of credibility with alarming sums of money from perhaps the most reviled country on earth. Apparently, some patriots are more vulnerable than others.

Few are more vulnerable than McIlroy. His quest for a fifth major crown dissolved into languid frustration at the British Open last Sunday, upended by Cameron Smith’s brilliant finishing kick and the repeated inability to capitalize on valuable scoring opportunities. McIlroy has been down this road numerous times before. Never has it been so bumpy. “It’s hard to win a championship with 13 clubs in your bag,” NBC lead analyst Paul Azinger said of the uncooperative putter that left the 54-hole co-leader alone in third.

“Of all those near misses that we’ve talked about,” added boothmate Dan Hicks, “can there be one that stings more than this? I would say absolutely not.”

McIlroy disguised his anguish with another dose of the gold-medal sportsmanship that has made him so beloved: “I was beaten by the better player this week,” he assessed. “To shoot 64 and win an Open Championship at St. Andrews is a hell of a showing, and hats off to Cam.” Gracious, indeed, but it was the vociferous support of the Old Course throng all weekend that had to make this defeat exceptionally difficult to reconcile. McIlroy was the overwhelming crowd favorite, urged on by roars once reserved for Tiger Woods . The vocal reverberations testified not only to the princely prodigy’s having gone eight years without claiming another major, but the front-line leadership role McIlroy has assumed in denouncing LIV Golf and expressing unconditional loyalty to a tour that has made him very, very rich and only slightly less famous.

Win or lose, some superstars are a lot easier to love than others.

In 2011, Feherty’s popularity earned him his own prime-time talk show, which Golf Channel aired through 2020. It received predominantly positive reviews over its 10 seasons and triggered a series of live, onstage performances to coincide with some of America’s biggest sporting events. He wrote a column for Golf magazine, authored four books that made the New York Times Best Seller list and made it abundantly clear that his political sensibilties were largely Republican in nature, grounded in an adoration of his country and public loathing for those who attempted to rob it of its precious freedoms.

All the while, Feherty wore his heart on his sleeve. A red, white and blue one. “From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East,” he said in 2009, “I can tell you this: if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance Pelosi would get shot twice, and Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death.”

In any context, some defections are harder to explain than others. As a golf announcer, Feherty has become considerably more docile in recent years. His incomparable wit has all but vanished, the humorous references no longer a part of his on-air repertoire. The death of his 29-year-old son Shey from a 2017 drug overdose, then the cancellation of his Golf Channel show, are attributed by insiders as the primary causes for Feherty’s less-vibrant disposition on NBC telecasts. When the New York Post broke the news of his leap to LIV Golf yesterday, another well-placed source said the network will be happy to unload his contract.

The absence of character that made Feherty such a hit could be symptomatic of a loss of interest, especially after 25 years on the job. With that in mind, why would a man about to turn 64 attempt the proverbial fresh start with an unproven product frequently criticized for its Saudi connections and dubious intentions? A league that claims a streaming option (YouTube) as its main broadcast partner and failed to attract even 100,000 viewers for its final-round coverage in Portland earlier this month ?

As it becomes increasingly obvious that some guys will forsake all other career-related factors in favor of money, Feherty’s political conscience and moral compass make his departure from NBC a shocker. Was he told in advance that his contract would not be renewed? Does that justify a move that flies in the face of everything he appeared to stand for? Does he think his affiliation with LIV Golf will revive his Q rating, boost his off-course market value or lead to everlasting happiness?

An unyielding sense of appreciation and five bucks will buy you a cup of coffee nowadays. If David Feherty can jump ship, anyone can, which only legitimizes speculation that Cam Smith and his Claret Jug are among the next batch of decorated players to dive into the Sea of Saudi Solvency. Long relished for his standing as golf’s most loveable comic, despite the personality makeover, Feherty is more valuable to the renegade faction than any dozen tour pros nobody’s ever heard of.

NBC might not miss him, but a lot of people will. You can bet your bottom dollar that McIlroy isn’t laughing.

David Feherty’s goal for LIV Golf, Season 2: ‘piss off at least one viewer per week’

NBCUniversal Portrait Studio, Summer Press Day

Maarten de Boer/NBC

Because his mind moves like a torrent and because he has to say exactly what’s raging through it, David Feherty felt compelled during a 10-minute telephone interview early Tuesday evening to tell you that he sees monkeys scurrying about at Mayakoba Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and that one of them has paused outside his hotel room window to take care of some urgent business.

“There are monkeys all over the place here,” Feherty said with his familiar Irish deadpan delivery, offering play-by-play through the telephone. “Oh, perfect, now one is taking a crap right in front of me. What can I say? No respect.”

Respect is one of the things Feherty craved when he left NBC Sports last summer to become lead broadcast analyst for the LIV Golf League—to prove to people that not only can he administer a compendium of incomparable wit, but also, he said, “to show that I actually know what the f--- I’m talking about.”

MORE: Thomas Pieters is thrilled to jump to LIV Golf

It’s doubtful that over the seven years he worked for NBC and Golf Channel that Feherty, 65, wasn’t appreciated, but a lead analyst role with the Peacock folks never was going to grace his résumé. Of course, there were other reasons that the former European Tour winner moved to the Saudi-backed upstart golf tour last July. With the end of his Golf Channel primetime talk show in 2021 after 10 seasons, Feherty felt he had no suitable outlet for his creativity.

“I felt I couldn't say what I was thinking for fear someone, somewhere would be offended. Also, the money was terrific,” he said of his five-year deal with LIV, the specifics of which he, uncharacteristically, has stayed silent about.

MORE: LIV Golf announces first sponsor

The timing of the start of the second year of the LIV Golf League, juxtaposed to NBC’s run of PGA Tour events starting with the Honda Classic, is hard to ignore in relation to Feherty’s career move. A native of Northern Ireland who became a U.S. citizen in 2013, Feherty in past years would be heading east at this time from his Dallas home for a month-long run of Florida events. Instead, he flew southwest to Mayakoba, where the LIV Golf League is opening its season at El Camaleon Golf Course, formerly the site of the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship as recently as last November.

“Believe me, I have no regrets at all,” he said about broadening his broadcasting repertoire while adding that a month in Florida wasn’t his idea of a good time.

The LIV Golf League begins its second season with a television deal of sorts. Saturday and Sunday coverage of its 14-tournament schedule will air on The CW Network, which reaches 200 million homes, though five of those events will be shown on tape delay. Live streaming coverage will appear on the CW app, starting with the first round from Mayakoba at 1:15 p.m. ET Friday.

Feherty again will join Jerry Foltz and play-by-play announcer Arlo White in the 18th-hole tower, and while he hesitated to provide many insights into plans for the coming season, he did highlight one new initiative.

“We’ve got a new feature that we’re calling WTF,” Feherty said, letting the acronym hang in the air for a beat or two. “It stands for What The Feherty. I’ll be exploring different topics. The first one is going to cover statistics; you know, the old Mark Twain adage about three kinds of lies. [Lies, damn lies and statistics.] There are so many meaningless statistics in golf. Three-putt avoidance … what is that? Isn’t that just two-putt acceptance? I’ll do a bit like that one every week, gravitating toward anything but the actual playing of golf.”

As for his analyst work, he’ll just be himself, which means pushing the envelope as much as he can get away with. This he promises. “My goal is to piss off at least one viewer per week, but I’m hoping for more,” he said.

“I’m just ready to get to work,” Feherty added. “I’ve been sitting around way too long, and I need to be busy. I’ve been looking forward to this. You know …”

He was about to say something else, but then he pivoted to the scene outside his window. “Oh, hey, the monkeys are back,” he exclaimed.

It seemed like a good time to end the call. Feherty and monkey business. Why, yes. Of course.

Players have trotted out a myriad of dubious reasons for joining the controversial LIV Golf Series — growing the game and more time at home with family, among them. David Feherty, who ditched NBC/Golf Channel to become an analyst for the Saudi-backed circuit, at least stated the obvious.

“Money,” Feherty told the Toledo Blade . “People don’t talk about it. I hear, ‘Well, it’s to grow the game.’ Bull … they paid me a lot of money.”

The 63-year-old offered the candid response at a fundraiser event in Ohio, where he was joined by former NBC colleague Gary Koch.

Though the crowd cheered the choice of words, an increase in his bottom line wasn’t Feherty’s only reason for joining.

“An opportunity to be myself again,” said the Northern Irishman, who won 11 times worldwide as a player and whose career spanned more than two decades before he turned to broadcasting in 1997.

“It’s become more and more difficult, especially in sports broadcasting, to have any kind of character. Charles Barkley can say pretty much anything he wants because it’s, ‘Oh, that’s just Charles.’ And it’s just Charles. But I have become more and more guarded over the last few years. There are people waiting around every corner hoping to be offended by something. F–k those people.

David Feherty ditched Golf Channel/NBC for LIV Golf this summer.

“Our lives are being shaped by small groups of mean-spirited people who have no sense of humor. We’re in danger of losing our national sense of humor because of this.”

Feherty also went on to say that the 9/11 Commission cleared Saudi Arabia of any involvement in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Multiple 9/11 groups have protested against LIV Golf — including its most recent tournament at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey — because the league is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The FBI also released newly declassified documents that link Saudi Arabia with those involved in the attacks. Further, the country has been widely accused of using its involvement in the game to sportswash Saudi Arabia’s numerous human rights atrocities, including the 2018 killing of Washington Post journalist Jamaal Khashoggi.

David Feherty speaks with Ian Poulter during LIV Golf's Bedminster, N.J., event on July 30, 2022.

Though LIV is without a broadcast deal and currently features its events online, landing Feherty, who made his debut at the Bedminster event, is significant for the circuit.

LIV’s schedule is set to expand from eight tournaments this year to 14 in 2023. It has also reportedly nabbed reigning British Open and Players champion, Cameron Smith.

Paul will bring his acclaimed Got Back tour to Europe this December!

Fulfilling his promise to 'get back', Paul will return to France, Spain and the UK with his Got Back  tour. Earlier this month, Paul announced his first live shows of 2024 with the next leg of the tour launching in South America this October.

With songs like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Band on the Run’,  ‘Let It Be’ and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music – dozens of songs from Paul’s solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives.

This will mark Paul’s first European show since his iconic Glastonbury headlining performance in 2022. Hailed as “one of the greatest gigs of all time” by The Times and “a masterclass from the greatest living cultural figure in this country’s history” by The i, it was also Paul and his band’s 500th show together! These dates will see McCartney return for his first live performance in Paris in six years - in 2018 he played at La Defense Arena, where he is making his return. The wait has been longer for Spaniards, where he last played eight years ago, in 2016 at Estadio Vincente Calderon.

Paul launched his Got Back tour in 2022, completing 16 huge shows across the US before performing his history-making set at Glastonbury in June 2022. In 2023 Paul performed 18 incredible shows as the Got Back tour rocked through Australia, Mexico and Brazil.
