A driver driving his car to take the Covid test as per the Abu Dhabi entry rules

Rules for entering Abu Dhabi from other emirates

  • Entry Rules

Abu Dhabi authorities had enforced entry rules as part of COVID-19 restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. Those entering the capital had to undergo certain checks at the border. However, all entry rules have been removed as the overall COVID-19 situation in the UAE has improved a great deal.

ABU DHABI ENTRY RULES

The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee (NCEMA) removed all entry rules for Abu Dhabi effective from 26th February 2022.

Earlier, all those entering Abu Dhabi from within the UAE had to undergo EDE scanning and a rapid antigen test. Travellers who tested positive had to undergo a quarantine period. But according to the latest rules, commuters can drive into Abu Dhabi without stopping for the checks mentioned above since those requirements are now waived off.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the entry rules for international tourists who want to visit abu dhabi.

Entry rules for international tourists have been eased and the Abu Dhabi Green list has been scrapped entirely. Vaccinated travellers or those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the last 30 days don’t need a PCR test. Unvaccinated travellers still have to show a negative PCR test obtained within 48 hours of travel.

CAN WE VISIT PUBLIC PLACES IN ABU DHABI?

Most public places still require a green status on the Al Hosn App . You have to be fully vaccinated for the green status (this includes getting the booster shot if your second shot was more than six months ago plus a recent PCR test).

Dubai Transactions

The Abu Dhabi Emergency Crisis and Disaster committee recently updated the rules for unvaccinated people entering tourist attractions and public places. They need to present a negative PCR test result taken in the last 48 hours to be allowed entry to various venues in the capital city.

WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?

You can contact SEHA on 800-1717 for any queries that you may have.

The UAE’s Covid-19 related flight restrictions for travel from 12 African countries will be lifted this weekend.

On Wednesday, the country’s Covid-19 crisis authority announced the easing of restrictions on flights from South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and eight other countries in Africa .

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority also said it had updated entry procedures for flights originating from three other African countries: Ghana, Rwanda and Uganda.

Flights were suspended from several destinations in Africa following the emergence of the Omicron variant.

The UAE's lifting of the ban on inbound flights from these 12 African nations means that travel will soon be open for those coming from or who have been in one of the destinations in the last 14 days.

Entry to the UAE from South Africa and six other countries was banned in November, with other nations added to the ban list in December.

Here is the latest information on the UAE's updated travel rules for destinations in Africa.

Which African countries can I fly to the UAE from?

Flight arrivals to the UAE will be able to resume from 12 African countries from Saturday.

These are Botswana , Congo Republic, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya , Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia , Nigeria, South Africa , Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Travel from these destinations has been suspended since late last year, when authorities implemented flight suspensions owing to the new strain of Covid-19.

When can people fly into the UAE from these countries?

The new rules for flight arrivals from these African nations to the UAE will come into effect at 2.30pm on Saturday, January 29.

Travellers will not be allowed to fly into the UAE from any of these countries any earlier than this time on Saturday, and so should not book flights that are scheduled to land prior.

What are the entry rules for travellers coming to the UAE from Africa?

Travellers flying to the UAE from any of these 12 African destinations will be required to take a PCR test no more than 48 hours before departure. This must be from an approved laboratory, a list of which is available on Emirates airline's website.

Travellers will have to take a rapid PCR test again at their departure airport where this is available. No timeframe has been laid out by authorities for when this must be conducted yet, but it is typically within six hours of departure at other destinations requiring the same tests.

All arriving travellers will take another test on arrival in the UAE, and must self-quarantine until they receive the result. All precautionary measures in place in each emirate must be followed by all arriving passengers. Children under 12 years old are exempt from testing.

In Abu Dhabi, this means retesting on days four and eight for vaccinated travellers coming from countries not on the emirate's green list , and on day six for approved destinations. Unvaccinated travellers from green countries need to test on days six and nine, and those from other destinations must undergo home quarantine.

In Dubai, no further testing is required but travellers must follow the rules in place for social distancing and wear face masks in public.

What are the new rules for travel from Uganda, Ghana and Rwanda?

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority has also updated rules for those travelling from Uganda, Ghana and Rwanda. These travellers must follow the same rules in place for other African destinations, including pre-departure PCR and rapid PCR tests and an on-arrival test in the UAE.

When will flights to the UAE resume from these African destinations?

Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Emirates is resuming flights to five destinations in Africa. From Saturday it will commence flights to and from Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

To South Africa, the Dubai airline will resume flights to Johannesburg from January 29, and to Cape Town and Durban from February 1. Kenya flights to Nairobi will resume January 29, with services to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe's Harare and Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania restarting January 30.

Etihad, the national airline of the UAE, is expected to announce the restart of flights to some African destinations in due course.

Low-cost airline flydubai is resuming flights to Ethiopia from Sunday, and to Tanzania and Zanzibar next month.

"Following the latest announcement from the authorities, flydubai will resume its three-times weekly service to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia from January 30. The carrier will also resume its double daily operations to Dar Es Salaam and Zanzibar in Tanzania from February 16," a flydubai representative told The National.

Can I transit in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Transit passengers can fly to the UAE from 12 destinations in Africa from where travel was previously banned. Photo: Dubai Airports

The lifting of flight restrictions means that Dubai and Abu Dhabi will once again be open to travellers transiting in the UAE from these 12 destinations when flights resume.

Travellers must follow the rules in place for transit passengers, including taking all relevant PCR tests before flying and on-arrival tests where required. Airlines can provide more information on the most up-to-date rules for transit passengers.

Entry rules for Abu Dhabi

Entry rules for Abu Dhabi

Are you planning to travel to the capital city? Keeping up-to date on the latest requirements and restrictions is crucial with all the changes to the rules and regulations for travel into the capital.

Visiting Abu Dhabi remains a safe, awe-inspiring, and culturally rich experience. Throughout this guide, we explain the most important rules for accessing Abu Dhabi and its public spaces.

It would be best to begin with the Al Hosn Green Pass, which is the basic requirement to enter public places within Abu Dhabi.

What is the Al Hosn Green Pass?

The Al Hosn Green Pass is a digital document accessible through the Al Hosn app.

The Al Hosn app is the official COVID-19 results app for the UAE. The app is currently available in Arabic, English and Hindi. You can download it from the App Store, Google Play, Huawei App Gallery, and Galaxy Store for free.

On the Al Hosn app, you will be able to view:

  • your vaccination certificate (UAE residents vaccinated in the UAE, will have their vaccination details automatically loaded in the app, but for tourists traveling to the UAE, should follow the guide given below to upload their vaccination certificates in the app).
  • any recent PCR tests linked to your account, if taken.

The Al Hosn App requires your Emirates ID number if you are a resident. For tourists, the app asks for UID (Unified Identification) number, which is obtained from their visa.

Call 800 HOSN (4676) if you face an issue in installing or using the Al Hosn app.

Al Hosn Colour Coding System

Al Hosn generates a unique personal QR code, following a three colour-coding system: grey, green or red on the completion of your vaccination and validity of your RT-PCR test result.

If you are:

  • Grey  means neutral; that you have no test results that are currently available, or when the validity of the RT-PCR test ends.
  • Green  means you have been tested and you are healthy. This could grant you access to public places in the future.
  • Red  means have you tested COVID positive and you must seek the advice of the local health authority.

As of March 24, 2022, the green pass will be available to everyone regardless of their vaccination status. Al Hosn App’s tweet more on it as below:

Tourists and unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals can now obtain the green status on #Alhosn app! For more information about the updated protocols, please visit the support center on your Alhosn app. pic.twitter.com/AdTs3khXAR — Al Hosn App (@AlHosnApp) March 24, 2022

Al Hosn Green Pass validity period 2022

As of June 13,2022, validity of the green pass on Al Hosn following a negative test result from a fully vaccinated individual (which is —he/she have had both doses of the vaccine, and a booster shot six months after receiving your second dose) is 14 days. Previously, the validity period of the green pass was for 30 days.

If you are not vaccinated or partially vaccinated – you can obtain a 48 hour Al Hosn Green Pass with a negative PCR test, effective Thursday 17 March 2022.

If you are exempted from taking a COVID-19 vaccine and have official doctor-approved medical exemptions, you will hold a valid Green Pass status for a period of seven days from a negative PCR test.

Children under 16 years , the status will appear as green on Al Hosn app without the requirement of a test.

If you have recently recovered from COVID , you will receive a Green Pass valid for 30days – exactly 11 days after receiving a positive test. After that a negative PCR test will be required, for a follow up Green Pass window of 30 days.

Entry to Public Places

Most public places and attractions in Abu Dhabi are only accessible to those individuals, who hold ‘Green’ status on the Al Hosn App .

Entry rules for Abu Dhabi

If you are fully vaccinated (including the booster shot, which is taken six months after the second dose) and have a green pass on Al Hosn App, which appears after a negative PCR test result and remains for 14 days, you can enter public places.

Unvaccinated individuals and those with grey status on Al Hosn app, which reflects an expired PCR test, are prohibited from entering these public places.

If you have an official exemption from vaccination, and have a negative PCR test result from the past 7 days, you can enter the public places.

Unvaccinated travellers need to take a PCR test every 48 hours to maintain ‘Green’ status for entry to public places.

Children under 16 years, whose status will appear as green on Al Hosn app without the requirement of a test, will also be allowed entry.

Public places which require green pass for entry include shopping malls, hotels, public parks and beaches, health clubs and resorts, as well as entertainment centers like cinemas, museums, restaurants and cafes.

Current Entry Rules for Abu Dhabi

Entry to abu dhabi by air.

As of 26 February 2022, you no longer need a test before you fly to Abu Dhabi if you are fully vaccinated, or you hold a COVID-19 recovery certificate with a QR code issued within 30 days.

If you are not fully vaccinated, you must present a negative PCR test result taken within 48 hours of departure, or a Covid-19 recovery certificate with a QR code dated within 30 days of departure. Children under 16 are exempt.

As of March 7, it is now no longer mandatory to take a PCR test upon arrival in Abu Dhabi International Airport. However, the testing facility remains at the airport for any visitors that wish to take a PCR test to activate their Green Pass in Al Hosn app and facilitate access to Abu Dhabi’s public places and tourist attractions. The cost of this PCR test is AED 40.

Transiting in Abu Dhabi

You do not need a COVID-19 test certificate or a vaccination for transiting the UAE, unless your final destination requires it.

Entry to Abu Dhabi by Road

Effective from 28 February 2022, all requirements to enter the emirate of Abu Dhabi from within the UAE have been removed. This includes removal of EDE scanners and requirements for the Al Hosn green pass.

However, if you wish to enter any of the public places in Abu Dhabi, a Green Pass on Al Hosn app is mandatory (as mentioned above).

Al Hosn App for Tourists

The Al Hosn app is worth downloading if you are heading to Abu Dhabi as a tourist, especially if you are vaccinated. To register, you have to use the Unified Identification Number (UID), which can be received at UAE international airport upon arrival or via the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) website ( ica.gov.ae ) or ICA app.

Here’s how tourists can prove they’ve been vaccinated :

To upload your vaccination certificate, download the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship (ICA UAE Smart) app or visit the  ica.gov.ae  website and attach your vaccination certificate(s) for approval. The ICA website requires tourists to register their documents five days prior to departure.

Once you have uploaded the vaccination certificate, you will receive an SMS with a link to download the Al Hosn App. Use the same mobile number for ICA app and Al Hosn app. To set up your profile on the Al Hosn app, you will need an UID number which can be obtained at the airport once you arrive.

According to latest update, unvaccinated individuals and people without the Al Hosn Green Pass can now visit “events, tourist attractions and cultural sites in Abu Dhabi” with a negative PCR test obtained within 48 hours.

Despite changes to other COVID rules over the past year, including the removal of capacity restrictions and mandatory face masks, the Al Hosn Green Pass is a lasting reminder that we’re still not completely finished with COVID restrictions in the UAE capital.

Information on this page was last updated on 10 October; Please make sure you’re getting your Green Pass information from the most relevant and up-to dates sources (NB, unfortunately, this isn’t always the Government website – their social channels can be more accurate)

How do I get “Green” on Al Hosn?

Getting and maintaining “Green Status” or a “Green Pass” on your Al Hosn app involves being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a WHO-approved vaccine and having a PCR test at least every 30 days (this has variously been 14/30 days; the last rule change as at 28 September made the testing period for those over the age of 16, 30 days once more).

If you are not vaccinated, or your first two vaccines were greater than 6 months ago, your PCR test results conducted in the UAE will still appear in the app, but your Al Hosn will appear grey . Grey prohibits entry to public buildings (you can still enter small supermarkets and pharmacies).

To regain your “green status”, you must get a booster vaccine dose (or gain a medical exemption via SEHA if there is a valid reason not to take the booster).

Here are the latest guidelines shared by Al Hosn :

Al Hosn Rules Sept 2022 vaccinated and Unvaccinated graphic

What if I turn Red on Al Hosn?

If you have a positive PCR test, the Al Hosn app will turn Red, You will need to follow health department procedures (last updated 28 September 2022) :

  • According to the SEHA (the Abu Dhabi Health Authority), the present procedures only require you to visit a COVID-19 Prime Assessment Center if you’ve tested positive and you’re a chronic disease patient or aged over 65 years.
  • You are told to take a second PCR test at a SEHA facility for all other cases, then self-isolate for 5 days.
  • After 6 days, your Al Hosn will automatically turn green again, where it will last another 30 days (previously, this was 10 days and 60 days).

The designated COVID-19 Prime Assessment Centers are open daily between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm at:

  • Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi
  • Al Ain Convention Center in Al Ain
  • Madinat Zayed City in Al Dhafra

Some public buildings and events may require you to have a negative PCR test result within 48/72/96 hours, in addition to showing the Green Al Hosn. This seems to change regularly, so check requirements if attending a particular event or Government building. For the most part, however, Green Al Hosn is all you should need.

Exemptions for the Green Pass

  • If you have an approved exemption, then you must get a PCR test every 30 days to keep your Al Hosn Green.
  • Children under 16 can be registered on the app but do not need PCR tests or a vaccine to turn green.
  • New residents have a 60-day grace period to update their vaccine schedule.

Unvaccinated individuals now have access to the Al Hosn Green Pass

If you are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated, the Green Pass rules changed again on 28 September 2022. You can now get Green Status on the Al Hosn app with a PCR test within 7 days (previously, this was 48 hours).

Al Hosn Changes For Cruise Passengers

On 10 October 2022, the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism announced that cruise passengers and crew would not need to use the Al Hosn app with the presentation of a cruise card or a wristband.

Instead, they can enter using cards or wristbands issued by cruise ships. pic.twitter.com/gCXewz9ELL — Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (@dctabudhabi) October 10, 2022

The exact format of this exemption is still yet to be seen, but rest assured, if you’ve met the health and safety requirements to board the cruise that’s docking at Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi, you will no longer need to mess around with getting your PCR tests, and Alhosn sorted to enjoy the best of Abu Dhabi on a stopover .

Mask Rule Update

Together with the use of the Al Hosn app, wearing face masks has been a key preventative measure used in Abu Dhabi since the Coronavirus outbreak.

On 28 September 2022, NCEMA announced the removal of mandatory masks indoors for most situations.

Rules are still in place for hospitals and health care facilities, houses of worship, public transport, and food handlers in the hospitality industry.

Wearing masks on airlines is at the airlines’ discretion and subject to the destination they are flying to ( Etihad have already announced masks can be removed inbound to Abu Dhabi; outbound rules are subject to the rules of the destination airport).

Otherwise, wearing face masks is now optional in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Frequently asked questions on the Abu Dhabi Green Pass

This understandably still raises quite a few questions for tourists and residents.

It requires every person over the age of 16 to be in possession of a mobile phone, have internet access and a working Al Hosn App in order to prove their status. So what do you need to do if planning a trip to Abu Dhabi?

You can find the current entry requirements for Abu Dhabi during Covid-19 HERE

The Alhosn or Al Hosn App can be downloaded from Apple  or  Google Play  store. The app is “whitelisted” with telecommunication providers in the UAE, so it will work even if you have no data or wifi connection.

Visitors to the UAE have been assured that even as non-residents, they will have access to the Al Hosn app. Although the Al Hosn app asks users to fill in their Emirates ID number, a “Unified ID” can be used instead. This number appears on your Visa document if you are arriving on a pre-arranged visit Visa . For Visa on Arrival visitors who only get a passport stamp, you will need to apply to the ICA at least five days before your arrival to get your Unified Identification Number (UID). Once registered, passengers are issued with a QR code and can subsequently use the Al Hosn App. Only PCR tests carried out in the UAE will appear on the Alhosn app. The only exemption is as mentioned above, for cruise ship passengers and crew.

Compulsory PCR testing at Abu Dhabi International Airport has been abolished. However, those still wanting to take a PCR on arrival – a necessity if you want to activate your Al Hosn – can still undertake the test at the airport for a cost of 40AED pp.

The age limit that has been set on the Green Pass being required is 16 years of age. Any person over 16 must be vaccinated and/or hold a negative PCR test result for the green pass to work and must have access to a mobile device to display their “Green Pass” – this can be added to another adult’s phone if they don’t have their own device. Children under 16 should be added to a parent’s Al Hosn App using their Emirates ID or UID if a tourist. (NB the App may only allow the child to be attached to one phone number, this will be the number given when completing your forms or when a PCR test is taken).

The COVID-19 vaccination program in Abu Dhabi has currently been rolled out to children as young as 3 years old for Sinopharm and 5 years old for the Pfizer vaccine. COVID-19 Vaccines are free to all residents and available at multiple hospitals and SEHA clinics across the city. Recently rules have changed so that those with expired visas can also receive the vaccine. Please consult the official UAE Government website for further advice on eligibility if you’re a non-resident and any further information on Vaccines and PCR Testing in the UAE.

This information can now be pre-loaded in the Al Hosn App before you travel (those already in the UAE prior to 27 August 2021 can apply from within the UAE). Although the Al Hosn is considered compulsory, many visitors are reporting they are having no problems getting into places with a copy of their vaccine reports and a negative PCR test in lieu of the app.

UAE residents who have received a first dose or booster vaccine in another country are reporting difficulties in uploading their subsequent overseas vaccines in the Al Hosn App. To resolve this, please visit a SEHA clinic in Abu Dhabi (no appointment needed). Medical staff will assess your vaccine details, upload them to Al Hosn and provide an exemption from needing a UAE booster after six months. This should keep your status Green after the 20 September 2021 grace period.

The critical part here is continuing to be regularly tested for COVID-19 and keeping your vaccine up to date. The testing period stretches out after you’re vaccinated but does not disappear. If you receive Sinopharm first, your vaccine must be updated after six months. Whilst vaccinated, your negative PCR Test result only lasts for 30 days. The PCR test can be taken at any SEHA (Government) clinic or drive-through, or there are numerous hospitals and clinics offering the service privately. It is a paid service unless you’re being seen symptomatically in a hospital where insurance may cover it. The standard price (now regulated) is 40 AED per PCR test. Results take around 12 to 24 hours to appear on the Al Hosn app. If you urgently need a test, many companies now offer rush PCR’s, results available in 1 to 3 hours depending on the company you use and how much you’re willing to pay for the rush.

No. Whilst Dubai residents and visitors can also use the Al Hosn app for collating their results, vaccine status and track & trace, the Green Pass system of needing to show your app has not been introduced as a mandatory requirement in Dubai or any other Emirate in the UAE. Depending on their licence, individual establishments in Dubai and the Northern Emirates may require you to show a negative PCR test result to enter. Bars, for example, have stricter requirements than restaurants (these look to be all but abolished now as at October 2022).

Yes, as a tourist to Abu Dhabi, whether staying in the Abu Dhabi emirate, Dubai emirate or anywhere in the UAE, you will need a valid “Green Pass”on Al Hosn, or evidence of a recent PCR test in order to enter the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi (in addition to meeting the Mosque’s strict dress code requirements ). The only exemption to this was introduced on 10 October 2022 for cruise ship passengers and crew. We can confirm this applies to those arriving in Port Zayed, Abu Dhabi. We are seeking clarity if cruise passengers arriving at Rashid Port in Dubai will have the same exemption if they take a shore excursion to Abu Dhabi emirate.

There are ways that you can briefly greet AUH stopover passengers without Al Hosn. If you stay within the airport, even land side, you will not need Alhosn. Your stopover visitor could also come to your private home for a few hours or visit the outside area of a cafe near the airport (try places in Etihad Plaza or Al Muneera Beach Plaza, both less than a 10-minute taxi ride away with outdoor seating). Don’t forget if they’re taking any sort of public transport during a short stopover, a face mask will be needed for this. Visiting a tourist attraction or indoor dining, you and your stopover guest will need Al Hosn.

Dubai emirate does not require the use of Al Hosn. If you are visiting both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it would be wise to get your PCR test done before crossing into Abu Dhabi emirate. On-the-spot testing may be possible at some venues (eg we’ve heard the Yas Island Theme Parks are offering rapid test), but we’d play it safe and get your test before you visit. f you are using the re-instated intercity bus service, you will need to show your Green status Al Hosn at the bus station in Dubai.

The Green Pass system was first introduced on 15 June 2021 with different categories for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals but was quickly put on pause. The latest iteration from Abu Dhabi Emergency Crisis and Disaster Committee now omits regular PCR testing for unvaccinated individuals from the Green Pass. The only way to get your Al Hosn Green is to have a valid vaccination loaded or an exemption (with an up-to-date PCR test result if applicable).

If you have only received two doses of Pfizer and have not taken any previous vaccines (such as Sinopharm), you are most likely due a booster dose. Since the Green Pass was introduced, they gave a one-month grace period for Sinopharm recipients to get a booster. This grace period has now ended. Now as a minimum, you must have had your two doses of Pfizer + a booster after six months. If you go a day over that 6 months, your app instantly turns grey. If you had two doses of Sinopharm initially, then two doses of Pfizer, your app will remain green as long as you have regular negative PCR results at least every 14 days.

The best advice is to try and uninstall and reinstall the app again seems to resolve the issue. The guidelines we have is that there is no getting around the presentation of your Green Pass; businesses that allow anyone to do so would face steep fines, so the onus is on individuals to ensure they’ve got the app working before arriving or face being turned away. Note that the app no longer allows you to screenshots; you must have an active app. Often the issues occur when visitors use a different phone number in the UAE than when they first registered for the app. You can either give the number of a relative locally to overcome this issue or call the Alhson helpline which we share below.

The Latest Entry Requirements for Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi entry requirements

Travel has been the most sorely missed aspect of “normal life”. COVID-19 has proven an unprecedented disruption, especially with the rules and regulations in place for entering Abu Dhabi. International travel restrictions almost brought the tourism industry to a halt. Travel restrictions are still impacting the freedom to travel. Luckily, things are finally beginning to look up. If a sunny holiday getaway has been on your mind, Abu Dhabi may be a realistic destination. But before you start packing, you need updated information on things like travel safety, PCR test at home in Abu Dhabi , and vaccination.

Read on to discover more about Abu Dhabi’s updated entry rules.

Abu Dhabi COVID-19 Travel Restrictions in 2022

Complicated new processes may seem annoying, at first. But not when you understand why they exist. Travel restrictions protect not just travelers, but their host countries as well. That’s not to mention the travel authorities and staff. There is no understating the risks of contracting and spreading Corona.

At the same time, the travel and tourism industry is a significant one. Even after widespread layoffs and furloughs, it still supports 272 billion jobs globally! This has prompted Abu Dhabi to revise many travel requirements. The new requirements make travel to the emirate easier but without compromising on safety! Here’s everything you need to know:

For Travelers With Valid Vaccinations

Were you among those people that got vaccinated promptly? If yes, that was a good decision! Abu Dhabi entry requirements no longer include quarantine and precautionary isolation restrictions. This is only for travelers who have valid proof of vaccination! They have a lower risk of contracting and transmitting the virus.

Here’s what you need to know if you are vaccinated:

  • The authorities recognize a list of vaccines approved by both the WHO and UAE’s own MOHAP.
  • The WHO endorses vaccines like AstraZeneca, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, and Pfizer. This list also includes Sinopharm, COVAXIN, Nuvaoxid, Sinovac, and others.
  • UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) includes all of the above, as well as Sputnik, and Sputnik V.

Validating Your Vaccination/Exemption Status

The process to ensure the validity of vaccinations is very streamlined. Individuals need to register themselves along with proof of vaccination. If you intend to travel to Abu Dhabi soon, make sure you complete the validation process. Additionally, the process must take place 48 – 72  hours before your flight (depending on the country from where you are departing).

Here’s how to do it in 3 easy steps:

  • Visit ica.gov.ae or download the ICA UAE Smart application
  • Locate and fill out the form under “Register Arrivals Form”
  • Attach your most recent valid vaccination certificate

Once you have done so, wait for an SMS confirmation message. This will contain a download link to the ALHOSN application. This is UAE’s official app that serves as a digital vaccine passport. It allows users to store and produce verified vaccination information. The green status on the app is essential for entry into public spaces.

Alternatives to The Alhosn App

Does your home country have an app similar to the ALHOSN app? Great! That app can act as alternative proof of vaccination. People who don’t have the ALHOSN application will also need to provide the results of a recent PCR test. This test must show a negative result. To ensure cohesiveness and integrity, the authorities need you to take the PCR test in the UAE.

Note: The test results cannot be older than 14 days.

Supporting Negative PCR Test Result

Asymptomatic patients can carry the virus without exhibiting any obvious signs. So, before you travel, it is prudent to make sure you don’t have an infection. The most recent Abu Dhabi travel requirements ask for a negative PCR test result. Only then will you get clearance to board your flight. Of course, a lot can happen between a test result and a flight. Therefore, the test is only valid if taken between 48 to 72 hours before the flight. This helps to reduce the risk of an undetected infection.

Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll take another PCR test at the airport. You’ll need a negative result to be able to freely visit all public spaces. Luckily, the test results take only about 90 minutes. After taking the test, you can leave the airport. But wait for the result at your stated accommodation before launching into vacation mode. A green status on the ALHOSN app will tell you if your test was negative.

Obtain UID from Immigration Authorities or ALHOSN App

Once you land in Abu Dhabi, the first thing to do is to get your Unified ID number or UID. There are 2 ways to do this. Check with the immigration counter on arrival. You can also get the Unified ID number from the ICA UAE application/website. The Unified ID is mandatory to complete your registration on the ALHOSN app.

Important Exemptions for Incoming Travelers

Vaccinations are a great way to avoid contracting/spreading diseases. But everyone may not be able to get them. Young children with autoimmune disorders are one such example, and may not be ideal recipients of vaccinations. The PCR test is not mandatory for these people. Additionally, if you have children under 12 or an official exemption from your country, then they can be exempted from the PCR test as well.

Travelers from Countries on the “Green List”

The UAE has a dynamic list of countries that it deems “Green”. This status indicates travelers from that country have a lower risk of bringing infection into the emirate. The list is, of course, fluid. After all, the pandemic sees new variants and spread-spikes frequently. The Green List’s most recent update was in January 2022.

Be sure to check if your home country is on the list before you fly. If so, you will need to take one PCR test on the 6th day from your arrival date.

What if your country did not make it to the Green List? What if it temporarily loses “Green” status? Simple! All you need is two more PCR tests. Specifically, on the 4th and 8th day from arrival.

Incoming Arrivals from Other Emirates

For people traveling to Abu Dhabi from Dubai or any other emirate, the same guidelines apply. You will go through the same procedures, registration, platforms, and applications. Just like any other traveler. If you are a resident or visitor already in the UAE, make sure your ALHOSN app has a green status. This will let you enter Abu Dhabi. Moreover, all borders now have EDE scanning devices. Anyone that appears high-risk on that scan will immediately receive a free-of-cost test. The test delivers accurate results in as little as 20 mins.

If you are a UAE resident who tests positive on this antigen test, a 10-day isolation period is mandatory. Moreover, a wearable wristband will help authorities monitor travelers. This helps prevent safety violations during the isolation period. Non-residents who test positive will immediately return to the emirate they traveled from. They must also report to their local healthcare authorities.

Getting a Green Status on ALHOSN App

The ALHOSN app is a convenient way to keep validated proof of vaccination on hand. The green status on the app allows individuals access to public places. Since the app is MOHAP-approved, the green status is equally acceptable across the emirate. If you’re planning on being out and about during your trip, the ALHOSN app is your vaccination passport. The green status depends on your vaccination status as well as the results of your PCR tests. The status turns grey once the validity of your last PCR test expires. And if you test positive for the virus, the status will turn red. Broadly, the status consists of 6 categories, including:

30-Day “Green” (Fully Vaccinated)

This applies to fully vaccinated people. That includes volunteers as well as people who got their second dose at least 28 days prior to a PCR test. The status will remain green for 30 days following the latest PCR test. Obviously, if your PCR test result is negative, you can’t get the “green” status on your app. You can tell if ALHOSN includes you in this category with the gold star and “E” icon. To keep your status green, you need a PCR test every 14 days (previously 30 days) with negative results. 14-Day “Green” (Fully Vaccinated)

This status applies only to fully vaccinated individuals. The second dose must be less than 28 days prior to the latest PCR test. If the test results are negative, the app will display a green status for the next 14 days. 7-Day “Green” (Partially Vaccinated)

The 7-day status is strictly for people who have had their first dose of an approved injection. However, they still have time till the second dose is due. Provided their last PCR test shows a negative result, the app will show a green status for the next 7 days.

7-Day “Green” (Vaccination Exemption)

If you possess a valid certificate of exemption from the vaccine, you don’t need to worry about the vaccination status. However, you will still need a negative PCR test to acquire the green status. The status will remain green for 7 days from the last test.

3-Day “Green”(Partially Vaccinated)

The 3-Day green status is for partially vaccinated individuals. If you have had the first dose, but missed the second one by more than 48 days, the app will show a green status for 3 days. The app will only allow this status for 3 days from the date of the most recent PCR test.

3-Day “Green” (No Vaccination, No Exemption)

If you do not have a valid vaccination or exemption from the vaccine, the app will still let you acquire green status. However, you need to test negative on a PCR test first. And the green status will remain for a maximum of 3 days from the negative results.

A green status is the only status that will allow you access to public spaces in the emirate. However, it is not enough to get a green status just once. It needs to remain green throughout your stay. To remain green on the app:

  • Get vaccinated (full/partially) or obtain a valid exemption.
  • Get a PCR test before the validity of your green status expires.
  • Get regular tests to extend your green status for your category.
  • Take all precautions to avoid exposure to the virus.

Information for Unvaccinated Individuals

Unvaccinated travelers can only board a flight to AUH with a negative PCR test result. The test must be performed between 48 to 72 hours before arrival. If you fly in from a country on the Green List, a quarantine period is unnecessary. However, you must get a PCR test on the 6th and 9th days of your stay. Unvaccinated travelers from countries not on the Green List must isolate themselves for the mandated quarantine period.

Upon arriving at AUH, be sure to download the ALHOSN application. Remember to complete your registration on it before leaving the airport. Also, unvaccinated individuals will need to take a free test as soon as they arrive. Results become available in about 90 minutes. Non-Green List travelers may also need to wear a smart wristband during isolation. But only if they test positive upon arrival. The new requirements include a 10-day quarantine period. Following this, you need another PCR test on the 9th day of quarantine.

Conclusion

Under the current climate, travelers need to be very responsible and careful. Especially about meeting COVID 19 restrictions. That includes tests conducted during isolation in the UAE. Luckily, testing services can let you take a PCR test at home in Abu Dhabi . So, you can streamline the testing for ease and convenience. For an extended stay, more tests become necessary. A negative PCR result every 14 days of your stay in the emirates is the current requirement. However, that should not impact your stay if you take precautions. Remember to travel safely and responsibly!

Abu Dhabi Travel Update: Entry Guidelines for Tourists

airport passenger

Are you planning to visit Abu Dhabi? If you're not sure about entry restrictions, here's all you need to know.

Entry requirements for Abu Dhabi

When entering the city, one needs to provide a negative COVID-19 test result. Two test results that are accepted are: 1. RT-PCR test (Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test) that is typically done through a nasal swab 2. Laser-based DPI (Diffractive Phase Interferometry) test that's done via a blood test.

COVID 19 test

Does one need to undergo both DPI And RT-PCR Tests?

No, individuals can provide either of the two test results, so a negative result from either of the tests is accepted. However, they can enter the city only 48 hours after receiving the test result.

The city is a paradise for tourists. It's quite logical that guests may plan to stay in Abu Dhabi for longer than six days. In such cases, they would need to take another RT-PCR test on Day 6.

The above-mentioned rules are applicable to the tourists, as well as Abu Dhabi residents who may have exited the emirate and may consider returning. The extra measure ensures the health and safety of the community.

For volunteers in the COVID-19 vaccine trials, they are exempted from these measures. They are authorised to use emergency vehicle lanes for a smooth journey.

Do international travellers need to disclose the date of entry?

The Abu Dhabi Crisis, Emergency and Disasters Committee requires international guests to disclose the date of entry into the country. They can do this at checkpoints designated for international travellers at all ports. Passengers who don’t adhere to the guidelines will have to pay penalties.

Where can you get the tests done?

It would help to know the location of PCR testing centres in the city. In Abu Dhabi, places such as Zayed Sports City, Al Wathba Screening Centre, and Abu Dhabi Corniche among others are testing centres. For those who wish to get a DPI test, it can be done for DH50 at Zayed Sports City and Abu Dhabi Corniche.

Your Guide to Understanding Abu Dhabi Travel Restrictions – Oct 2022 Update

abu dhabi travel restrictions 2022

After a long time of quarantine and travel ban due to the global pandemic Covid-19; Abu Dhabi begins to welcome its travelers again -somehow- usually. However, there is still confusion understanding what is exactly required to enter the Emirate?! And what does it need to have a safe trip in Abu Dhabi without any concerns of being not allowed to pass Abu Dhabi international airport or enter specific places or tourist attractions?

In the coming few lines; we will try to help you to understand the Abu Dhabi travel restrictions of today in a question-and-answer form.

Q) Is the PCR test at the Abu Dhabi international airport still required to enter Abu Dhabi?!

A) The short answer is No. No, it is not required as you can pass the airport with no need to do a PCR test at the airport as long you have your vaccination certificate with QR.

New Abu Dhabi Travel Restrictions

abu dhabi travel restrictions 2022

Abu Dhabi authorities have enforced entry rules as part of COVID-19 restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. Those entering the capital had to undergo certain checks at the border. However, all entry rules have been removed as the overall COVID-19 situation in the UAE has greatly improved.

In this article, we will help you to learn all about the new Abu Dhabi travel restrictions . So continue reading to get the answers to all your questions.

Abu Dhabi entry rules and travel restrictions

The National Committee for Emergency Management in Abu Dhabi (NCEMA) decided to do away with all entry requirements for the emirate of Abu Dhabi as of February 26th, 2022.

In the past, everyone entering Abu Dhabi from inside the United Arab Emirates was required to undergo EDE scanning and a quick antigen test. Those travelers who tested positive were required to spend some time in quarantine. However, following the most recent regulations, commuters are now permitted to drive into Abu Dhabi without stopping for the earlier inspections, given that these prerequisites are no longer necessary.

After displaying a green pass that verifies their testing and vaccination status using the Al Hosn app, guests who have been vaccinated are allowed admission to events, tourist attractions, and cultural institutions in Abu Dhabi.

Besides, you can then go through the process of how registering for Abu Dhabi citizenship if you want to live in this city. However, before that, you should know Abu Dhabi’s travel restrictions.

What is the Alhosn Green Pass?

Along with the use of face masks, the Alhosn Green Pass is a traffic light app that displays the results of your most recent Covid-19 test and your immunization status. Obtaining one of these passes is almost necessary to enter public locations inside Abu Dhabi.

It may be downloaded free from the Apple Store, Google Play, Samsung’s App Gallery, and other app stores. The app has various purposes, but its primary ones include saving your vaccination data and displaying any current PCR tests that are connected to your account.

UAE citizens who have been vaccinated in the UAE should have their information loaded automatically. On the other hand, visitors who have been vaccinated outside of the UAE should follow the guidance provided below to upload their certificates into the system.

If you are a resident of the Emirates, you will need to enter your Emirates ID number into the Alhosn app. Tourists must use the UID number that is printed on their visa.

Colour coding for Abu Dhabi travel restrictions

After the update has been applied, the primary profile of your application will display a QR code along with a status that is represented by one of three colors: green, gray, or red.

The Green color in Alhosn Pass

Green indicates that you have just been subjected to a PCR test, and as such, you are allowed to go anywhere you like in Abu Dhabi, including events, stores, restaurants, and malls.

Since March 24, 2022, anybody may get the “Green Pass” on the Alhosn app regardless of their vaccination status. Previously, the Green Pass on the Alhosn app was only achievable for people who were completely vaccinated (with a third booster injection). However, the length of time that your Green Pass is valid will be determined by the level of coverage provided by your COVID vaccination.

The green status on the Alhosn app is now accessible to travelers and those who have only had a partial or no vaccination.

The Grey color in Alhosn Pass

The color grey represents neutrality and indicates that you have not yet gotten a negative PCR test within the allotted amount of time to change green. Going out and obtaining the PCR result is all that is required for you to become green.

Suppose you are over 50, have rather serious symptoms, have a chronic ailment, or are pregnant. In that case, you will be directed to attend one of the Prime Assessment Centres for a medical checkup and advice on how to remain in isolation. Also, those who want to get a visa to travel to this city should visit مراكز الفحص الطبي للتأشيرات في أبو ظبي .

The Red color in Alhosn Pass

The color red indicates that you have been found to be positive for the COVID virus. You should get another test at any health center in the emirate and keep isolating yourself until the results come back.

If the test results come back positive, a professional will get in touch with you to guide you on the isolation protocols that need to be followed.

abu dhabi travel restrictions 2022

What is the validity period for the Green Pass?

People who have been fully immunized (that is, who have received both doses of the vaccine and an activator shot six months after receiving their second dose) will be eligible for Green Pass status. This status will be valid for 14 days from the date of a negative PCR test.

Because of the rising number of reported cases, officials have shortened the validity window from 30 days to only 14 days. Consider that the Alhosn app must have a record of all of your vaccinations for you to reach this rank.

Those with exemptions that are currently in effect and have been authorized by a physician will have a valid Green Pass Status for seven days after a negative PCR test.

Those who recently recovered from COVID will be issued a 30-day Green Pass 11 days following a positive test result. A negative PCR test will be necessary to get a further Green Pass window of thirty days. PCR testing is not necessary for anybody under the age of 16, including children.

Keeping green status to avoid Abu Dhabi travel restrictions

On the Al Hosn app, you can keep your green status by following these instructions:

  • In order to keep their “green” status, people who have received their full vaccinations must wait 14 days to obtain confirmation that their PCR tests came back negative.
  • People who have not received the vaccination need to do a PCR test once every 48 hours in order to keep their green status on the Al Hosn app.
  • Those who are officially exempt need to have a negative PCR test result in every week in order to keep their “green” status.
  • Children who are under the age of 12 are exempt from having to take the exam and are said to be “green.”
  • Children between the ages of 12 and 15 years old do not need to be vaccinated; nonetheless, they do need to undergo a PCR test in order to get a “green” status on the Al Hosn app.

What are the Abu Dhabi travel restrictions for tourists?

Even if you have proof that you have been immunized, it is still a good idea to download the Alhosn app if you visit Abu Dhabi as a tourist.

However, as of March 17, after a change to the laws, unvaccinated people and those who do not have the Alhosn Green Pass are now permitted to enter “events, tourist attractions, and cultural places in Abu Dhabi. It is possible if they have a negative PCR test conducted within the preceding 48 hours.

Abu Dhabi travel restrictions for driving into Abu Dhabi

You will no longer be required to provide a negative PCR or an Alhosn Green Pass to enter Abu Dhabi as of Saturday, February 26, 2022. Additionally, there is no longer a necessity at borders to demonstrate that you have completed an EDE scan. But in any case, you should have an Abu Dhabi driving license. We have a دليل الحصول على رخصة قيادة في أبو ظبي , which can help you get your license.

Although it was covered before, obtaining a Green Pass is still necessary to attend public venues in Abu Dhabi. These include shopping centers, dining facilities, lodging establishments, fitness centers, public parks, and coastlines.

Abu Dhabi travel restrictions for flying into Abu Dhabi

Since February 26th, Abu Dhabi has no longer used the Green List system, and travelers from countries not on the Green List are no longer required to undergo quarantine if they have not been vaccinated.

Passengers traveling in Abu Dhabi from March 7 are no longer required to submit themselves to a PCR test upon arrival. It is now up to the individual to decide whether or not they want to pay the DHS40 fee. However, you can pay the money if you have a bank account. So, easily open an account in the best banks in Abu Dhabi .

Rules and travel restrictions for going on a trip to Dubai

Visitors from other countries who fly into Dubai and have had all of their vaccinations will be required to provide a COVID-19 vaccination certificate that has been authorized and includes a QR code. Travelers who have not received the vaccination will be required to provide either a negative result from a PCR test administered within the last 48 hours or a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 that includes a QR code.

Norms and travel restrictions for all Dubai visitors

Beginning on February 26, 2022, travelers traveling to Dubai from any country, including those in the GCC, had to meet one of the following requirements:

  • Provide a vaccination certificate (or certificates) with a QR code verifying that the traveler has received all recommended vaccinations against any diseases for which there is no known treatment.
  • Passengers must provide a negative COVID19 PCR test certificate produced by a QR code-enabled health care practitioner within 48 hours of sample collection prior to boarding.
  • Passengers must provide official medical documentation verifying recovery from COVID19 no more than one month before the scheduled arrival date.

The COVID19 PCR test or immunization certificates in other languages are allowed if they can be authenticated at the departure point.

PCR tests have to be based on a molecular diagnostic test that is aimed at the qualitative identification of SARS-COV-2 viral RNA in nucleic acid. There will be no tolerance for quick antigen, antibody, or any other kind of rapid lateral flow testing or home test kits.

Certificates of vaccination against NHS COVID19 issued for travel from the United Kingdom to Dubai will not be recognized.

The regulations and requirements for admission to the ultimate destination will be enforced for any passenger who is just in transit.

Dubai to Abu Dhabi travel restrictions

There are no prerequisites for traveling to Abu Dhabi from Dubai or any other emirate located within the United Arab Emirates.

The EDE scan and the other prerequisites for the Al Hosn green pass will no longer be necessary. However, a green pass will continue to be necessary to enter the vast majority of public locations in Abu Dhabi. This includes shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, fitness centers, public parks, and beaches.

The “on-arrival testing” regulation has also been eliminated, and Abu Dhabi has removed all nations from its “green list.” On the other hand, every traveler arriving in the UAE from a location outside the region will be required to provide a vaccination certificate and a code that has been authorized.

It has been stated that Abu Dhabi would no longer employ medical bracelets to keep track of those infected with Covid-19 and their close connections. The Green Pass and the EDE scanners will continue to be required to enter public areas in Abu Dhabi, such as restaurants and retail malls, among other types of establishments. But in case you get sick and needed to go to the hospital, you can go to the best government hospitals in Abu Dhabi .

Dubai travel restrictions for vaccinated travelers

As a result of Dubai relaxing its Covid-19 entrance requirements, visitors who have received all of their essential vaccinations will no longer be required to submit a negative PCR test upon arrival in the country. To be considered completely immunized, you must have received two vaccine doses.

Mandatory booster shot

Users are required to take a booster dose to keep their immunization status up to date if their second dose was delivered less than six months ago. In its most recent update, Al Hosn revealed that visitors to Abu Dhabi must now get a booster vaccine even if they have already been completely vaccinated against the disease.

Residents of the UAE who have received the appropriate COVID-19 vaccines and want to keep their “green pass” status on the app must have booster injections for each kind of vaccination. Visitors from other countries traveling to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) do not need to get a booster injection to enter Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi travel restrictions for non-vaccinated passengers

Unvaccinated travelers will be authorized to enter the country if they can provide evidence of recovery from the Covid-19 virus within the previous month or a negative PCR test result that was obtained less than 48 hours before their arrival. Passengers who are less than 12 years old do not need to pay the fee.

Abu Dhabi travel restrictions for recent recoveries of COVID-19

As a result of the fact that many recovered COVID-19 patients continue to test positive for a while, the Al Hosn app gives users two alternatives to choose from to change their status from red to green and be allowed to enter public places:

After a positive test for COVID-19, you will be required to remain in quarantine for ten days, after which your status will automatically become green on day 11. Following this, you will continue to have “green status” for the next 30 days. But, beyond this point, you will be required to submit to a PCR test once every 14 days in order to keep your “green status” on Al Hosn.

If you have fully recovered within ten days, you can perform two negative PCR tests, which will result in a “green status” on the app for thirty days. This status will remain active until the end of the period. After that, to keep the green code, you will be required to submit a PCR test once every two weeks for the next 60 days.

Abu Dhabi travel restrictions for public areas and facilities

As of the 17th of March, visitors to various events and public areas are required to adhere to the safety precautions already in place. Visitors who haven’t downloaded the Al Hosn app may still enter restricted areas by displaying a complete vaccination certificate or evidence of full vaccination status on their own country’s mobile app. Another acceptable outcome is a negative PCR test result obtained within the last 14 days.

By the new regulations issued by the government of Abu Dhabi, the use of face masks in outdoor public areas is no longer mandatory. On the other hand, using face masks is obligatory inside such venues. Children less than two years old and those with severe impairments or respiratory issues are excluded from the need to wear a mask.

The capacity of Abu Dhabi’s Venues

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) has announced that restrictions will no longer be placed on movie theaters, shopping malls, and other entertainment destinations. This will allow venues in the Abu Dhabi to resume operating at their full capacity beginning on February 15, 2022.

According to the National Center for Emergency Management and Analysis (NCEMA), the Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Committees in each emirate are the ones who will be responsible for deciding on how much preparedness each emirate has. They are also responsible for deciding whether or not to loosen or tighten the procedures and how much capacity should be adjusted based on the indicators.

Previously, the Abu Dhabi Emergency Crisis and Disasters Committee had published a circular that specified guidelines about the permitted capacity of events and venues with a capacity of 90%.

Best Travel Credit Card Recommendations

The best travel rewards credit cards offer valuable rewards, easy-to-use benefits, and helpful features like travel coverage. Our team of credit card experts at Business Insider chose the best options available on the market in 2024, and reviewed each one below.

Best Travel Credit Card Overall

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is our top pick for a well-rounded travel rewards credit card. Even infrequent travelers can benefit from the slew of premium perks on this card, typically found on cards with far higher annual fees.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card stands out for its travel protection benefits. When you pay for travel expenses with this card and meet certain requirements, you can request reimbursement for unexpected expenses that may arise when your flight is delayed or if your baggage is delayed or lost.

You'll also have primary rental car insurance, meaning you won't have to file claims through your personal car insurance plan or pay for coverage from the rental car company. This card also offers a 10% anniversary points bonus, and up to $50 in annual statement credits for hotel purchases made through the Chase Travel℠ Portal.

The rewards rate on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card isn't shabby either. You'll earn 5 points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards; 2 points on all other travel purchases; and 3 points on dining, online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs), and select streaming services. You'll earn 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are some of the easiest points to use in various ways. You can redeem them for travel directly through the Chase Travel Portal for a 25% boost in value, where 1 point will be worth 1.25 cents apiece. You can also transfer your points to Chase's airline and hotel transfer partners , which include United Airlines, Hyatt, Marriott, and many other airlines and hotel chains around the world. Cardholders can also use points for statement credits, gift cards, merchandise, and more.

What the experts love: High welcome bonus offer, earns bonus points on travel, dining, and online grocery purchases, you can redeem points for 1.25 cents apiece for travel or through Chase for 25% value bonus

What the experts don't love: Doesn't offer some of the travel perks you'll get with competing cards, such as airport lounge access and a statement credit for Global Entry

Best No-Annual-Fee Card for Earning Travel Miles

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is our top choice for a no-annual-fee travel card ( rates and fees ), and it's got many of the same perks as its bigger sibling, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

New cardholders can earn a respectable 20,000 miles after spending $500 on purchases within three months from account opening (worth at least $340 in travel according to Business Insider's valuations). While the card only earns 1.25 miles per dollar on most purchases (plus 5x on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel), it's still a compelling choice if an annual fee isn't for you ( rates and fees ).

You'll get the same access to Capital One's airline and hotel partners as you would with annual-fee cards, and a handful of benefits including car rental insurance***, travel accident insurance***, and purchase assurance***. This is also a solid pick if you're looking for a zero-interest credit card  with a 0% introductory APR offer, because new cardholders receive a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months (intro fee of 3% for the first 15 months, then 4% of the amount of each balance transfer at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time), then a 19.99% - 29.99% Variable APR ( rates and fees ).

What the experts love: No annual fee, access to transfer partners, generous intro 0% APR offer

What the experts don't love: Few travel benefits, lower earning rate

The newly announced Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card earns one of the highest rates of return on hotel bookings for a credit card that isn't co-branded with a specific hotel chain.

This card has a $95 annual fee, inviting direct comparisons to two other cards on this list: The Sapphire Preferred Card , and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . In exchange, cardholders earn at least 3x on dining and travel purchases. Airline purchases earn 4x, and hotel purchases earn 5x.

Wells Fargo simultaneously announced brand-new airline and hotel partners: Choice Privileges, Aer Lingus AerClub, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, avianca lifemiles, and British Airways Executive Club. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card cardholders can redeem rewards at the standard redemption rate of 1 cent per point for cash back, or transfer their rewards to any of the travel partners above for additional value.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card will be available for in-person applications at select Wells Fargo bank locations on March 9, 2024. Nationwide applications open online and in person on March 20, 2024.

Best Travel Credit Card for Beginners

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a great "set it and forget it" card, in the sense that you don't have to worry about various bonus categories for earning rewards. You'll earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2x miles on all other purchases.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card also offers one of the most straightforward ways to redeem rewards for travel: you're able to use your miles to cover recent travel purchases from your card statement, at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

You also have the option to transfer Capital One miles *** to more than a dozen frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs, including Air Canada Aeroplan, Etihad Guest, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. Capital One also added new partners including British Airways and Turkish Airlines, and improved the transfer ratio to 1:1 for most partners.

The selection of transfer partners is best suited to someone who wants to travel internationally and who doesn't mind spending some time researching the best ways to redeem miles with the different frequent flyer program options. But the upside is that you can always use your miles to cover your travel purchases. You also get up to a $100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck application fee credit.

What the experts love:  The ability to use your miles to cover your recent travel expenses; it earns at least 2 miles per dollar on every purchase.

What the experts don't love: Other cards offer higher rewards on certain spending categories such as travel and dining.

Best Travel Rewards on Everyday Spending

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card isn't as flashy or well-known as some other travel cards, but that doesn't mean you should overlook it, especially if you spend a lot on its bonus categories. Cardholders earn an impressive 3x points on air travel, gas stations, restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels, and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

Along with a solid welcome bonus offer of 75,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening (worth $1,200 based on Business Insider's valuations), you'll receive $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) booked through thankyou.com once per calendar year.

While it isn't the best for travel protections, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is the only card currently available to new applicants that unlocks the ability to transfer your ThankYou points to Citi's full list of airline and hotel partners , including JetBlue, Singapore Airlines, and Wyndham.

What the experts love:  Strong rewards earning in useful everyday categories, access to Citi's transfer partners

What the experts don't love: Lack of travel protections like car rental insurance, few travel perks compared to similar rewards cards

Best Travel Card for Students

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students is a fairly unique offering, as there aren't many student credit cards specifically geared toward travel. New cardholders can earn 25,000 online bonus points after spending $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days from account opening (redeemed as a $250 statement credit toward travel and dining purchases). That's a decent offer for a no-annual-fee card, and the earning structure is simple, too — 1.5x points per dollar on every purchase, with no bonus categories to keep track of.

There's also a 0% intro APR for your first 18 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made within the first 60 days of opening your account (then a 17.99% - 27.99% Variable APR) which can be handy if you have big purchases (like textbooks or supplies) you want to pay for over time.

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card for Students is a good choice if you prefer a straightforward card without having to worry about award charts or transfer partners. It's also a safe bet if you want to use it while traveling internationally — it doesn't charge pesky foreign transaction fees, so you won't be on the hook for extra charges if you use it overseas.

However, you won't find many extras — like travel benefits or purchase protections — with this card. If you're looking for better benefits, be sure to check out our guide to the best student credit cards for all the top options.

What the experts love: Impressive welcome bonus offer for a student credit card, good flat-rate rewards earning

What the experts don't love: No flashy extra perks or shopping benefits

Most Affordable Premium Travel Credit Card

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card was unveiled in late 2021 and offers a massive welcome bonus of 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening — worth at least $1,275 in travel, based on Business Insider's valuation of Capital One miles .

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is loaded with premium benefits that can more than offset the $395 annual fee ( rates and fees ). For context, the Venture X's annual fee, while high, is significantly lower than other premium travel card competitors.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card cardholders receive $300 per year in credits toward travel booked through Capital One, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and Capital One airport lounge access (even for authorized users), a 10,000-mile bonus on each account anniversary (worth $100 in travel), and Visa Infinite travel and purchase benefits.

As with other cards that earn Capital One miles , you can transfer rewards to over a dozen airline and hotel partners to book award travel, or use miles to book through the Capital One Travel Portal .

What the experts love:  Between $300 a year in travel credit and a 10,000-mile bonus on each account anniversary, you can offset the annual fee entirely — and that's not even considering other benefits like lounge access.

What the experts don't love:  The $300 travel credit is more restrictive than other cards' — it only applies to travel booked through Capital One.

Best for Earning Travel Credit from Dining and Groceries

The American Express® Gold Card is an ideal travel card for anyone who frequently eats out and/or shops at U.S. supermarkets. You'll earn 4x Amex Membership Rewards points on these purchases (though note the $25,000 calendar year annual cap for U.S. supermarkets; after that, you'll earn just 1 point per dollar, but that's a pretty high cap). The card also earns 3x points on flights booked directly with the airlines or through AmexTravel.com, and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

While the $250 annual fee is on the high side, you can offset it thanks to an annual statement credit. You can get up to $120 in annual dining credits**, but it's divided into up to $10 in credits each month, and the credit only applies at select restaurants and delivery services, including Grubhub, Seamless, Milk Bar, Wine.com, and Goldbelly, and participating Shake Shack locations.

You'll also get up to $120 Uber Cash ($10 per month) credit each calendar year (this is only applicable to U.S. Eats orders and rides, and the Gold Card needs to be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit).

What the experts love: "4x points on restaurants and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per year, then 1x) is great — usually, a card favors one or the other," says Rathner. Plus, the card offers monthly dining credits.

What the experts don't love: Wilson notes that other cards offer similar benefits for a lower annual fee, and Rathner notes that the card's travel and dining credits come with some important limitations — so read the fine print.

Best Premium Card for Travel Insurance and Bonus Categories

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has a $550 annual fee, which means it's not for everybody, but if you're serious about maximizing your rewards and you travel frequently, it could be worth it. It offers a bonus of 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Not only do you get up to $300 in statement credits toward travel each year (and Chase has a very generous definition of travel — including everything from airfare to highway tolls), but you also earn 5x total points on air travel and 10x total points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards (excluding the $300 travel credit) and 3x points on all other travel and dining. You also get airport lounge access through the Priority Pass network , which has more than 1,300 locations worldwide.

New benefits also include access to Chase Sapphire lounges in JFK , LaGuardia , Boston , and Hong Kong, as well as the Chase Sapphire Terrace at Austin Airport . You'll also receive benefits with DoorDash  and Instacart that can save you money on delivery (activation required).

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is currently offering cardholders two years of complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership (valued at $199 per year) for member-exclusive pricing, priority pickup, and more (activation required).

When it comes to redeeming points, you can book travel through Chase and get 1.5 cents per point (a 50% bonus over the standard 1-cent-per-point rate), or you can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards to travel partners like Hyatt, British Airways, and United.

Plus, like the less-expensive Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers some of the best credit card travel insurance around. This includes primary car rental insurance, trip delay insurance, trip cancellation protection, and lost baggage insurance.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card was previously our pick for the best travel card overall, before the annual fee increased from $450 to $550. While the Reserve did add some additional benefits, the Reserve no longer makes as much sense for casual travelers. As a result, we now recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card as the best travel credit card for most people.

What the experts love:  Earns 3x points on travel and dining purchases made outside of Chase Travel Portal, annual $300 travel credit, points are worth 1.5 cents apiece for travel booked through Chase

What the experts don't love: You have to squeeze every drop of value out of this card to make that jaw-dropping $550 annual fee worth your while.

Best for Luxury Travel Benefits and Airport Lounge Access

The Platinum Card® from American Express has one of the highest rewards card annual fees —  $695 — but it can still be well worth it if you can put all of its statement credits and generous welcome bonus offer to use.

You'll earn 5x points on flights when you book directly through the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 per calendar year), which makes the card a great choice for purchasing airfare. The card offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance, plus some of the best purchase protection, so it's a good option for buying expensive items (and don't forget to see if you can take advantage of an Amex Offer ** for bonus points or cash back).

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers more airport lounge access than any other personal travel card — in addition to Priority Pass membership**, you get access to Amex Centurion Lounges , Delta Sky Clubs (when you're flying Delta), and more.

The card's annual statement credits can go a long way toward offsetting the high annual fee. You get up to $200 in statement credits toward airline incidental fees** like checked bags and inflight purchases; up to $100 each year in credit toward Saks Fifth Avenue purchases**; and up to $200 in annual Uber credits (including Uber Eats)**.

Just keep in mind that you're limited to one designated airline you choose each year in your Amex account for the airline incidental fee credit, and both the Saks and Uber credits are divided into portions. You'll get up to $50 in statement credits toward Saks purchases from January to June, and another credit of up to $50 for Saks purchases from July to December.

With the Uber credit, you get up to $15 each month, and a $20 bonus in December for a total of $35 that month.

What the experts love:  Lots of luxury benefits, including airport lounge access and statement credits with Uber and Saks

What the experts don't love: This card's $695 annual fee, and minimal bonus categories

How to Choose the Best Travel Credit Card

While it takes more effort to redeem points or miles compared to cash back, the upside is that you can get much more value for your points compared to simply cashing in your rewards for a statement credit or check at a rate of 1 cent per point.

In fact, it's possible to receive double, triple, or even more than that amount when you're strategic about how you redeem your rewards, particularly if you book expensive luxury hotels or first-class flights.

In this guide, we've focused mostly on the best travel credit cards that earn transferable points. Transferable points include popular currencies such as:

  • Amex Membership Rewards
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards
  • Capital One miles

You can transfer these points to both airline and hotel partner loyalty programs. You can even redeem your points to offset the cash price of your travel at a flat rate.

Travel Credit Card Frequently Asked Questions

If you want a single credit card that does it all and don't mind paying a generous annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a great choice. It comes with the best travel insurance available on the market, as well as a $300 travel credit each year that can be used on most types of travel.

The best travel credit card overall is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, but the best card for your particular situation will depend on what benefits you care about the most, as well as how you feel about paying a high annual fee.

We'd recommend opening a travel card that earns Amex or Chase points, because these are among the easiest rewards to redeem and you have various travel partners to utilize. But if you've investigated your options and are confident that you can get value out of their rewards, credit cards that earn Capital One miles or Citi ThankYou points can make sense as well.

There are two main types of travel credit cards: Cards that earn transferable points, and airline/hotel co-branded credit cards. Transferable points currencies include Amex Membership Rewards points, Capital One miles, and Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Airline credit cards and hotel credit cards earn points or miles within a respective hotel or airline program; you don't have the option to redeem your rewards with a wide variety of travel partners (or if you do, the transfer ratio usually isn't great).

To pick the right travel credit card for you, you'll want to evaluate its welcome bonus offer, ease of use, benefits, and annual fee. The best one for you will ideally have a combination of an attractive sign-up bonus , lots of options for earning and redeeming rewards, benefits that save you money, and a low or no annual fee.

Travel credit cards with annual fees are worth it if you're able to get significant value out of their benefits and rewards. Before you apply for a card , make sure you'll actually use all the features that contribute to the card's annual fee. For example, if a card offers an annual statement credit of up to $200 toward travel but you can't use it, you're probably not getting what you pay for.

Travel credit cards work by earning you points (or miles) on every purchase you make, with the goal of helping you earn enough rewards to book free travel . The best travel cards earn points that you can transfer to various airline and hotel partners — like Amex, Chase, or Citi points.

A great way to work toward getting a free flight is by applying for a travel credit card and earning its welcome bonus offer. Domestic award flights in economy class typically require about 25,000 points, so depending on the welcome bonus offer, you could have enough rewards for a flight right out of the gate.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Travel Credit Cards

Business Insider evaluated dozens of travel credit cards currently available to new applicants and narrowed down the list to the best options based on the following factors:

  • Welcome bonus offer — Do new cardholders get a valuable incentive to sign up and meet a minimum spending requirement?
  • Ongoing rewards — How many points or miles do you earn on your purchases?
  • Benefits — Beyond rewards, does the card offer valuable perks such as statement credits for travel, primary car rental insurance, and airport lounge access?
  • Annual fee — Is there an annual fee, and if so, is it affordable or easy to offset with card perks?
  • Overall value — Does the card justify its annual fee by offering useful benefits and valuable rewards, and is it worth it?
