Couples travel insurance – how does it work?

does couple travel insurance cover individual trips admiral

It might not have the same appeal as researching the local cocktail bars, but buying travel insurance is a crucial part of planning a worry-free break.

Taking out a comprehensive travel insurance policy can offer peace of mind that if something goes wrong during your trip — or you are forced to cancel it altogether — you’re financially protected.

If you’re travelling with a partner, couples travel insurance is an option worth considering. These joint policies cover both you and your ‘other half’, which can save on hassle as well as cash.

How is a couple defined?

Different providers have different criteria when it comes to defining ‘a couple.’ Typically, you and your partner must be aged 18 or over, share a home address, and be in a relationship.

It’s best to double-check you meet the insurer’s criteria before taking out the policy, since some may require you to have lived with your partner for at least six months.

What do the premiums cost?

When you take out a couples travel insurance policy, the premium you’ll pay depends on several factors including you and your partner’s ages, and whether either of you has any pre-existing health issues.

Even if just one of you is aged over 65 and/ or has a medical condition, premiums will be higher since you’re considered more likely to claim for medical treatment during your trip.

Taking part in risky activities such as winter sports during your trip will equally push up the price of your premium.

Your travel destination is another important factor in determining premium prices. Policies that cover the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean tend to be more expensive, since medical treatment is more costly in these regions.

As an illustration, if you and your partner will be travelling within Europe for seven days, you can expect the cost of policies to start at around £20 — assuming you are both under 65 and have no pre-existing health conditions. The same level of cover will set you back about £45 if you’re travelling to the USA.

For an annual multi-trip policy, you can expect to pay around £30 to travel within Europe, and £80 to travel worldwide including the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Taking out couples travel insurance often works out cheaper than opting for two individual policies.

That said, if you or your partner is over 65 or has a pre-existing medical condition, this will push up the premium for both of you. In these cases, it’s worth comparing both joint and individual policies to find the more affordable option.

Types of couples travel insurance

As with individual travel insurance policies, you and your partner can purchase cover for a single trip, or multiple trips over the course of 12 months.

If you have more than two trips planned within a year, an annual policy is usually better value.

The type of policy you require also depends on where you’ll be travelling. Depending on your destination, you could purchase cover for the UK, Europe, worldwide, or worldwide plus USA, Canada and the Caribbean.

What’s covered

With any travel insurance policy, it’s important to check you’re getting the right level of cover for you and your partner’s needs.

The exact coverage you receive depends on your policy and provider, but at minimum it should include:

  • Medical expenses — this ensures you can pay for any medical treatment if you fall ill or become injured during your trip. Check that repatriation (taking you back to the UK) is  included
  • Cancellation or curtailment — you can make a cancellation or curtailment claim if you need to cancel or cut a trip short due to unforeseen circumstances
  • Baggage and personal possessions — this covers you if your baggage or a valuable possession is lost or stolen during your trip
  • Personal liability — you’ll be covered financially if you accidentally damage someone’s property or injure them while travelling.

If your trip is not an ATOL-protected package holiday, it may be worth selecting a policy that  includes ‘end supplier failure’ cover. This type of cover allows you to make a claim if the company you booked with fails.

Some policies also include ‘scheduled airline failure cover,’ which pays out if the airline you were due to travel with goes bankrupt.

It’s also worth checking whether the policy you’re considering allows for Covid-specific related medical, cancellation and curtailment claims.

Travelling separately

If you have an annual multi-trip policy, you may still be covered if you decide to travel without your partner — but it’s a good idea to double check the terms and conditions before setting off.

For example, the Allianz Assistance annual policy allows you to travel independently of your partner, provided you took it out together on the same date.

Other considerations

When choosing a policy, take a look at the maximum amount you can claim in different categories to ensure you aren’t left out of pocket.

For example, your cancellation cover should ideally be enough to cover the total cost of your flights, accommodation and any pre-booked activities, while baggage and personal possessions cover should be high enough to replace valuable items.

With a joint policy, be sure to check whether claim limits are per person, or per policy.

It’s also important to consider a policy’s excess — the amount you’ll need to pay if you make a claim.

With both you and your partner included on the policy, it’s important to check whether the excess must be paid by both individuals, or once per policy.

Selecting a higher excess may result in cheaper premiums, but could work out more expensive should you need to make a claim.

Shopping around and comparing a few different policies will help ensure you and your partner get the level of cover you need at the best possible price.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to get travel insurance as a couple?

It will usually be cheaper to get a joint travel insurance policy as a couple rather than two separate policies. However, this is assuming you’ll qualify for standard travel cover. If one person in the couple has a pre-existing medical condition, for example, then it may work out cheaper to get two separate policies. You can get a good idea of what presents the best value by comparing quotes online for different scenarios.

Does travel insurance cover two people?

If you buy a joint travel policy for a couple, the cover will extend to both of you. Cover limits apply per person and will not need to be ‘shared’ between you.

Can we go skiing on our joint travel policy?

It will usually be possible to add cover for skiing to your joint travel insurance. You could opt for a specific winter sports policy, or most travel insurers allow you to add winter sports to your standard travel cover at an additional cost.

Will couples travel insurance cover us if we break up?

Unfortunately you won’t usually be covered under your travel insurance if you split up and no longer want to take the holiday you had booked together.

The best option in this scenario is likely to be to cancel or rearrange the trip directly with the provider to try to salvage some money back from the booking.

Do I have to be married or in a civil partnership to get couples’ travel insurance?

You don’t have to be married or in a civil partnership to get a couples’ travel policy with your partner. But you do need to be living at the same address.

If you want cover for catastrophes (e.g., volcanic ash cloud and storms) then choose one of the top two tiers—Gold or Platinum. Policyholders also have the option to buy extras like Winter Sports, Gadget, Golf and Cruise (included on Platinum). End Supplier Failure is not covered on Admiral plans, however.

Admiral Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Admiral offers three levels of Annual and Single Trip travel insurance—Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. All policies include some level of cover for Trip Cancellation , Emergency Medical, Trip Delay/Missed Departure, Legal Assistance, Personal Accident and Personal Belongings. Mid-tier (Gold) and top-tier (Platinum) policies also include Catastrophe cover; top-tier plans include Hijack cover and Cruise cover as well. But there's no cover for financial failure of suppliers like airlines or hotel operators.

As for optional extras, Winter Sports can be added to all tiers of insurance for an additional cost. Gadget and Golf cover are optional add-on features available for the top two tiers for an additional cost —Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. You can't add these features to the lowest tier Admiral plan. Cruise cover is included as standard on Admiral Platinum policies, or available for an extra cost on the lower tiers.

Those going on a cruise can get optional cover for cabin confinement, emergency airlift to hospital, missed port and unused excursions. To learn more about market prices please see our article Average Cost of Cruise Travel Insurance UK .

How to Buy Admiral travel insurance plans can be purchased either via a comparison engine or direct from Admiral . The basic limits are the same, regardless of where you buy your policy. Differences between buying direct and buying from a comparison site mostly relate to excess and price: generally speaking, plans from a comparison site typically cost less (around 20% less, in fact, for Annual, Multi-trip policies according to our pricing analysis) BUT they have a higher excess for the same cover levels. A higher excess means you contribute more towards any claims. Those buying direct are sometimes offered a 10% discount for buying online, so it's good to check the website to see what discounts are offered today.

Are Gadgets (e.g., Mobile Phones) Covered? Gadgets including mobile phones are covered to some extent on all plans through the Valuables section of cover. However, the standard Valuables limit may be too low for you—it's only £200, £300 or £400, depending on which plan you choose. If you travel with multiple gadgets or more expensive gadgets, you might want to consider adding Admiral's Optional Gadget Cover to an Admiral Gold or Admiral Platinum policy. (Optional Gadget Cover is not available as an add-on to the lowest tier of cover, Admiral plans.) You're able to add this to your policy whether you buy direct or from the comparison site.

What is the cost of adding gadget cover to Admiral travel insurance? We checked in November 2023 and were quoted £4.30 for £1,500 of additional cover for a single trip for the loss, theft or damage of gadgets. Prices may vary.

To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover .

Does Admiral Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under Admiral policies, so long as you pre-booked at least 2 consecutive nights of commercially-operated accommodation more than 25 miles from your home.

Pre-Existing Conditions: Admiral may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions , for which you'll pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been declared by you, Admiral has given written acceptance and you've paid an additional premium.

As part of the online quote process you can declare your conditions to see if cover can be offered, and for what added cost. Or you can call Admiral's Medical Screening number (0333 234 9913) to discuss your particular situation.

Over 65s: Now, the latest policy documents don't specify upper age limits. Previously, they said that the age limit for travellers on Admiral's Annual Multi-Trip policies was 75 years or under or 79 years or under for a Single Trip. Cover for Winter Sports was subject to an age limit of 65 years. Now they say 'the cover we can offer you will vary depending on our age limits, underwriting criteria, the cover you need and the details you provide.'

Covid Cover: You're covered for emergency medical treatment and repatriation if you contract Covid-19 abroad; for cancelling your trip if you are diagnosed with Covid-19 within the 14 days prior to your trip departure or the hospitalisation or death of a close relative within the 14 days prior to your trip departure, as a result of Covid-19 (Cover is subject to your policy being active at the time of the event and proof of a positive Covid-19 test.)

Admiral Price Comparison

According to our data research in February 2018, prices of Admiral Travel Insurance were noticeably lower than the average cost of travel insurance in the UK. In fact, even Admiral's top-tier Platinum policies come in below average, as you can see in the following chart of Annual, Multi-trip plans by geography.

chart showing Admiral single-trip travel insurance prices compared to market averages

According to data we gathered, prices of Annual, Multi-trip policies from comparison sites were around £5 to £10 cheaper than policies bought direct from Admiral, depending on geography and type of plan, representing a savings of approximately 20%.

chart showing Admiral multi-trip travel insurance prices compared to market averages

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to your individual details, so please just use the following data for general educational purposes only; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

We also gathered quotes for Admiral plans for a family of four from the Admiral website—they'll pay on average 2X the cost of an individual policy (basically, kids go free). Below you can see how prices change across geographical locations like Europe and America and policy types for a family of four. Plans bought from a comparison site would be expected to cost less.

How much more expensive is travel insurance for a family of 4?

Cost of Add-On Extras

Winter Sports, Cruise, Gadget and Golf cover may be added for an extra cost to some of Admiral's travel insurance policies. We've gathered quotes across geographies and types of policies for a 30-year-old individual to give you an idea of the cost of travel insurance add-ons —these prices reflect policies bought directly from the Admiral website.

Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site

Generally speaking, you'll pay less for an Admiral travel insurance policy if you purchase it through a comparison engine ( try ours here ). Of course, there is a trade off. Policies—which are otherwise nearly identical—differ on a few points. First, the excess is higher on the comparison site policies. Second, the upper age limit is lower on policies via a comparison site.

Differences between Direct and Comparison Site Policies

You'll notice that the upper age limit for Winter Sports is the same regardless of where you buy (65 years), as is the maximum trip length on Annual, Multi-trip policies (31 days).

Protect your holiday today. Quick quotes from over 45 insurers.

Buying Admiral Direct from the Admiral Website

Those in their 70s or older may find more success buying direct, due to the higher upper age limits discussed above.

For an extra cost you can add golf cover to plans bought direct, if needed.

Here is a brief recap of some features available on Admiral travel insurance policies. Standard features like Medical and Personal Liability are also included on Admiral policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policy Limits section . For more complete details including inner limits and exclusions, please refer to the policy documents .

Types of Admiral Travel Insurance Policies

Admiral offers three tiers of travel insurance—Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. All are available for Single Trips or as Annual, Multi-Trip policies. Admiral Single Trip travel insurance covers trips up to 365 days abroad. Admiral Annual Multi-Trip policies cover any number of trips a policy year, up to 31 days each. You may be able to extend the maximum trip duration for an extra charge, subject to the underwriter's approval. The following limits and plan details are consistent across policies purchased from the Admiral website and a comparison site.

Admiral Travel Insurance

The "Admiral" plan is their entry-level travel insurance offering. Emergency Medical expenses are covered up to £10 million and you get up to £1,000 of cover per insured person for Travel Delays, Trip Cancellation/Curtailment and Personal Belongings.

You can add Winter Sports or Cruise cover to Admiral's cheapest plans, but Golf and Gadget cover are not offered as add ons.

Admiral Gold Travel Insurance

As Admirals's mid-tier offering, Gold policies include higher limits and the addition of Catastrophe cover (e.g., volcanic ash, earthquake, storm, flood, tsunami, etc.). Cruise, Winter Sports, Golf and Gadget cover may be added for a cost.

Admiral Platinum Travel Insurance

Admiral Platinum is the top-tier travel insurance plan with the highest cover limits per person. If the Platinum premium fits in your budget, you'll get the highest coverage levels with this plan. In addition to features of the Gold plans, Cruise cover is included as standard on Platinum policies.

Cover Limits (Single & Annual Multi-Trip)

How does Admiral Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of Admiral travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line travel insurance plans include cover for End Supplier Failure and Natural Disasters, plus cover for the replacement cost of used points or miles in case of Cancellation/Curtailment for a trip bought with air miles or another rewards structure. While prices are a bit higher than average, according to our analysis, you are getting these extra cover features. One surprising extra is Baggage—you'll need to pay extra to cover your personal belongings as they're not included as standard.

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for End Supplier Failure or Natural Disasters, or if you book trips with miles, then Direct Line might provide more comprehensive travel insurance for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Travel Insurance Review

AXA travel insurance offers good value for money, with all plans including Insolvency, Baggage, Cancellation/Delay/Curtailment and Catastrophe. Those who ski or snowboard will get longer Winter Sports cover with AXA (over 30 days, depending on the plan).

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for End Supplier Failure and Baggage included as standard, or you spend more than 17 on Winter Sports trips per year, then AXA might be a more comprehensive travel insurance option for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs Sainsbury's Travel Insurance

Sainsbury's Bank

Sainsbury's travel insurance offers solid travel cover at decent prices, especially when purchased through a comparison site. All plans include Baggage, Cancellation and Emergency Medical, but you also get Scheduled Airline Failure, Delayed Departure and Trip Abandonment. Extended Gadget cover can be added to all plans, to cover mobile phones, iPads, etc. Trip lengths are longer than average (notably up to 92 days on top-tier plans bought direct).

Bottom Line: Those needing cover for longer trips might find more suitable travel insurance from Sainsbury's Bank.

Other Useful Information: Policy Wording and Claims

COUPLE'S TRAVEL ADVICE

Whether this is your first trip together or you’re heading off to celebrate your 60 th wedding anniversary, a couple’s holiday is the perfect way to discover new places and make lasting memories.

So, let’s get started.

does couple travel insurance cover individual trips admiral

Planning your Couple's Holiday

You and your significant other could well be the most laid-back couple in the world but when it comes to going abroad, tensions can flare – especially when it comes to packing the suitcase! So, with this in mind we have put together everything you need to know about planning your couple’s holiday.

Budgeting for a Couple’s Holiday

Whether you’re planning a short break to the Cotswold’s or a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, agreeing a budget with your partner is key when it comes to planning your break. Once you have agreed on a budget (don’t forget to include spending money!) you can start looking at suitable destinations and trip types.

For most a holiday begins at the airport so if your budget allows it may be a nice touch for you to upgrade to the airport lounge, particularly if you are going long haul. Just imagine sitting in a comfortable chair watching your favourite TV show, enjoying your complimentary breakfast… surely that beats the long queues in the airports, right?! Also, you can get some great deals online for airport lounges so this may be something to look out for.

Setting an itinerary

Even if you and your partner are planning to only spend your holiday lounging on the beach, it is still a good idea to set an itinerary – especially if you are not all-inclusive and need to self-cater.

Once you have chosen your destination, spend some time researching the local area and look for restaurants, bars and attractions. TripAdvisor is a firm favourite when it comes to research locations as you are able to see the reviews and recommendations of other holidaymakers.

Another thing to consider when setting your itinerary is ‘me time’. It is not very often a couple will spend every waking moment with each other, so having to do so on holiday can get intense. With this in mind it is a good idea for you to book some time apart in the itinerary, even if it’s just five minutes a day where you stick your nose in a book or check out the cute boutique – it can make all the difference!

How to pack as a Couple

For us, the most stressful part of going on holiday is having to pack the suitcase so we can only imagine the stress levels when packing for two people. Having said that, we have some tips that you and your partner may find useful.

Splitting your packing is a useful habit to get into for any trip you take with another person. If you and your partner are planning to take separate luggage it is a good idea to split clothing and accessories between both cases. This way, if one case was to go missing in the airport you will both have enough clothing.

Another consideration to take when packing as a couple, is the clothing you are taking. This one sounds simple, but it is surprising the amount of times people go on holiday and realise their new shoes aren’t as comfortable as they look! When deciding what you need to take on holiday be sure to pack suitable clothing for the activities you planning and don’t forget a few smarter outfits for the evenings – no one likes to look scruffy on date night…

Planning to propose abroad?

Asking your loved one to spend the rest of their life with you on a picturesque beach with champagne nearby just screams romance, right?! If you’re planning on taking an engagement ring abroad, we recommend you check your travel insurance policy and make sure the ‘valuable’ section under personal possessions is high enough to cover the cost of the ring if it is lost or stolen – if the cover isn’t high enough, it may be a good idea to add the ring to your home insurance.

Couple’s Travel Insurance

What is couple’s travel insurance.

We know that travel insurance can be a minefield and finding a travel insurance policy to suit both yours and your partners needs can be tricky. The best place to start is by looking for a couple’s travel insurance policy as these policies are designed to provide you both with the same level of cover.

Most travel insurance companies will also offer a discount on couple’s policies so keep an eye out for this!

Depending on the company you chose to buy your travel insurance with, you may have to pass an eligibility criteria for a couple’s policy. Normally, an insurer will ask if you and your partner have been living together for six months or longer but this will differ from provider to provider.

does couple travel insurance cover individual trips admiral

Who is a couple’s travel insurance policy suitable for?

A couple’s travel insurance policy is suitable for, well couples! But bear in mind the eligibility criteria mentioned above. When buying your couple’s travel insurance, you may also find that the policy is available on both single trip and multi trip insurance, but which one is more suited to you and your partner?

A couple’s single trip policy is perfect if you are looking at taking a one-off trip lasting a week or so. If you and your partner have several trips booked within a twelve-month period you may find it is more cost-effective to buy a couple’s multi trip policy.

A couple’s multi-trip policy will cover unlimited trips to and from the UK (and within the UK) for twelve-months but be sure to check the single trip duration limit; most travel insurers cover up to 31-days per trip, however some only offer 24 days, whereas others will offer as many as 45 or 60-days per trip, so something to check on the policy you buy.

Adventurous couples (or just couples that want to holiday for longer than your usual two or three weeks) should look at a couple’s longstay policy. These policies are designed to cover trips that are one month or longer and can last up to two years.

What is covered under my couple’s travel insurance policy?

When buying your travel insurance it is important to remember there is no one size fits all. The cover available under your couple’s travel insurance policy will depend solely on the travel insurer and selected policy. Having said that, most travel insurers will offer cover for cancellation, personal possessions and medical expenses as standard – just be sure to check the cover limits are suitable for your trip.

If you and your partner are planning to take part in a few activities whilst you’re away, make sure they are covered under your travel insurance. Most couples travel insurance policies will cover a select amount of activities as standard and offer activity packs for those that are a little riskier, which can be added to most policies for an additional premium. Whilst it may not be compulsory to buy cover for your activity, if you required emergency medical attention as a result of the activity and didn’t have the appropriate cover you will have to pay all associated expenses.

Whilst we’re speaking about activities, we all have spontaneous moments – right?! Some travel insurers will allow you to add on activities on an ad-hoc basis once you have left the country – and will only charge a premium for the person taking part in the activity. Something to consider when looking for a travel insurance provider.

On the other hand, if you and your partner just want to lounge on the beach and indulge in book or two, that’s fine too – just remember the sun cream!

Whilst you’re exploring on holiday it is likely you will want to snap some memories to show others when you return home. But wait, is that smart phone covered? Gadgets, including phones, camera’s, music players and laptops, etc., are not usually covered as standard; there are a few travel insurers that will offer this cover but most will ask for an additional premium to be paid for a gadget extension . If you are taking gadgets with you, you can check if these are covered for any theft, loss or damage outside of the UK under your travel insurance. If not, and you would like cover on yours and your partners gadgets under your travel insurance, make sure you check the single article limit (the cover may state ‘up to £1,500’ but this is usually broken down into single article limits where each item i.e. smart phone/camera has a limit of £500.00) as it may not be high enough to cover your gadgets. Also, look out for age limits – some travel insurance companies will not cover gadgets that are over two years old.

It is important to note, both you and your partner don’t necessarily need to be insured under the same policy but by buying a couple’s travel insurance policy you can ensure that if one of you needed to cancel the holiday or need to return home early you would both be covered – this may not be the case if you were to buy cover with separate insurers.

Depending on your health, you or your partner may need to complete a medical declaration . The medical declaration can be completed by either you or your partner but if you are completing it on their behalf you must make sure you have their permission and have accurate, up to date medical information. Once you have completed the quote, the documents will be sent through to you so it may be worth checking them through with your partner just to make sure.

Tips for Travelling as a Couple

If this is your first holiday together, why not look at booking a trial weekend first? Holiday’s can be stressful so you don’t want to over-load stress onto your relationship. See how you get on spending a few days together.

Sorry to be a kill-joy, but try not to drink too much alcohol . One of you may wake up feeling absolutely fine in the morning whereas the other will not want to move from the bed and before you know it irritation has taken over.

Be prepared to compromise when it comes to the itinerary. There may be something that your significant other really wants to do or see and although it may not be your cup of tea just go with it – you’ll probably really enjoy it!

Plan activities that require you to work as team such as rock climbing or hiking. Not only will you be able to create memories with each other, it will help you bond as a couple and lean on each other when the activity becomes challenging.

Ask your partner what they would like to do on the trip. When visiting a new place is can be easy to list everywhere you want to visit, but there may be somewhere your partner is dying to visit so be prepared to compromise.

Don’t put all of your trust into the ‘tourist traps’. Most of the time these attractions are overpriced and, let’s face it, a bit of a let down so if you are looking to go for a romantic meal or a quieter spot to spend the day, ask the locals.

Q. On a couple’s travel insurance policy is the cover per person?

A. Yes, generally speaking if you are taking out a couple’s travel insurance the cover levels will be per person but always check the terms and conditions as this may differ between insurers.

Q. Am I covered if my partner can’t go on the holiday?

A. Most travel insurance policies will cover you if you are unable to go on your trip due to your partner falling ill. Cover for cancellation not due to an illness may be limited on some policies so if this is something you are concerned about look for a policy that will offer cover for cancellation for any reason which you could not foresee.

Q. Do I have to travel with my partner on a couple’s multi-trip policy?

A. No. If you are both insured on the same multi-trip policy you can travel independently.

Q. What counts as a couple?

A. Generally speaking most travel insurance policies will count a couple as two people in a relationship that have been living at the same address for six months or longer.

Couples Travel Insurance: Does it save Money?

One question we get often here at Holidaysafe HQ is whether it is actually cheaper to buy a couples travel insurance policy, and the simple answer is yes – if you and your partner meet the right criteria. To help anyone considering a joint policy, we’ve listed our top couples related FAQs and their answers below.

Stock-Picture-Couple-Happy-Piggyback

Who qualifies as a couple?

Different insurers may have different rules on what constitutes a ‘couple’, but under the Holidaysafe policies a couple is defined as two people (of any gender) who are 1) in a romantic relationship, and 2) have been living together at the same address for at least six months.

This ensures that only genuine partners receive the discounted rates we provide exclusively for couples. (Simply select ‘couple’ on the first page of our quote process to access the rates.)

What age do you have to be?

Age doesn’t really factor into our definition of a couple, but in general we have no upper age limits on our Single Trip policies, and can cover couples up to the age of 79 on our Multi Trip policies (depending on their destination of choice and the outcome of their medical screening of course).

What if one of us has a health condition?

That is not a problem; you just need to ensure the health condition is declared to your insurer at the time of purchase. Depending on the outcome of your declaration, the insurer may cover the condition for free, charge an additional premium, add a medical excess or even exclude cover altogether depending on the severity – if you’re in any doubt make sure you contact your insurer directly to ensure you’re both covered if the condition causes you to make a claim.

At Holidaysafe we use the specialist Protectif Medical Risk Rating system, which has been created to capture more detail about a customer’s individual circumstances and condition, allowing it to more accurately assess the risks and offer a fairer price.

Which destinations do you cover?

We cover travel to all destinations, except those deemed unsafe by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). To check the FCDO’s current rules on your destination, please visit our dedicated FCDO page. If you are travelling to a red or orange zone, click here to find out how we may still be able to help you get cover.

Can we buy annual cover and then travel separately?

Most Annual policies (now known as Multi Trip policies) can cover all the trips you and your partner take in a 12 month period – whether you’re travelling together or apart. Make sure you read through your policy wording to double check.

  • Trip cancellation or interruption: This covers the cost of your trip if you need to cancel or cut it short due to a covered event, such as illness or injury.
  • Baggage protection: This covers the loss, theft, or damage of your luggage or personal items.

Some policies also include coverage for:

  • Adventure activities: This covers injuries or accidents that occur while participating in adventure activities like skiing or scuba diving.
  • Travel delays: This covers expenses like meals and accommodation if your trip is delayed due to weather, strikes, or other unforeseeable events.
  • Emergency evacuation: This covers the cost of emergency transportation if you need to be airlifted to a hospital or evacuated from a dangerous situation.

What to Consider When Choosing Couples Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance Choosing Image

When choosing a couples travel insurance policy, consider the following:

  • Coverage limits: Make sure the policy provides enough coverage for your needs. For example, if you’re planning an expensive trip, you may need higher medical coverage limits.
  • Deductibles: A deductible is the amount you’ll have to pay out of pocket before the insurance company starts covering expenses. Make sure you understand the deductible amounts and how they apply to each type of coverage.
  • Exclusions: Exclusions are specific events or situations that the policy does not cover. Make sure you read the policy carefully to understand what is excluded.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Some policies may exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions or require a waiting period before coverage applies. If you have a pre-existing condition, make sure you understand how it will be covered.
  • Price: Compare the prices and coverage of different policies to find the best value for your needs.

Couples travel insurance is a smart investment for any adventurous duo. It can provide coverage for unexpected events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. When choosing a policy, consider the coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, and price to find the best value for your needs. With the right coverage, you can focus on making unforgettable memories with your travel partner.

Covid-19 - what our travel insurance covers

Our travel insurance now covers you for certain events related to Coronavirus (COVID-19), provided you have proof of a positive Covid-19 test and your cover is active at the time of the event.

What we cover

We provide cover for some costs related to Covid-19: please see Section 1 'emergency medical costs and repatriation' and Section 2 'cancelling or cutting short your trip' in your policy book for full details on what's covered.

We'll cover you if:

  • you were diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • a close relative died or became seriously ill as a result of Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • you weren't allowed to board your pre-booked outbound travel due to symptoms of Covid-19
  • an insured person or a close relative died during the trip because of Covid-19
  • you couldn't take part in an excursion due to you self-isolating after getting Covid-19

What we don’t cover

You won't be covered if:

  • you had reason to believe your trip may be cancelled, postponed or cut short when you booked it, purchased your policy or started your trip
  • any government or public authority imposes travel restrictions or quarantine on a community, location, or vessel because of Covid-19 (this includes, but is not limited to, local lockdowns, entry requirements, being denied entry and airspace closures)
  • you have to quarantine after arriving in the UK or abroad
  • the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) change their advice to avoid ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination because of Covid-19

For more information about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your travel cover, see our FAQ page . And remember to check the policy booklet carefully before you buy to make sure our cover meets your needs.

Do I need travel insurance if I have a European or Global Health Insurance Card?

Yes, you do. Research by the Foreign Office shows 48% of holidaymakers don't realise that without travel insurance they'd be liable to pay for their own medical cover abroad. Many people believe they're covered just by carrying their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if it’s still in date, or the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) that’s replacing it.

However, if you need medical attention the chances are only part of the costs will be taken care of. The EHIC and GHIC aren't an alternative to travel insurance and they won't cover potentially expensive costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, flights back to the UK, or lost or stolen property.

What happens if my holiday is cancelled?

Depending on the cover option you choose – Admiral, Admiral Gold, or Admiral Platinum – you'll receive up to £5,000 to cover the costs of your trip, including:

  • Deposits or package holiday cancellation charges
  • Accommodation and travel costs
  • Excursions and activities
  • Reasonable cancellation charges for kennel, cattery or professional pet sitter costs
  • Car parking fees

You can claim on your travel insurance if you’ve cancelled your trip for one of these reasons:

  • Death, illness, injury or complications of pregnancy or childbirth
  • Court cases and quarantine
  • You were made redundant from the place you’ve worked for two or more years
  • You (or your travel companion) are in the Armed Forces or Emergency Services and your leave was cancelled due to an emergency
  • Your home was seriously damaged by fire, storm or flood or burgled in the seven days before you’re due to leave for your trip
  • Your passport/visa is stolen seven days before your holiday and you can’t get a replacement in time
  • FCO advice on travelling to that country changes to advise against ‘all but essential travel’ or ‘all travel’

Find out more about claiming if your trip is cancelled in the policy booklet .

Are there any exclusions?

Like any insurance policy there are some things that aren't covered by Admiral Single Trip Travel Insurance including:

  • Claims made as a result of drug-use or drinking too much alcohol
  • Failure to tell us about any pre-existing conditions
  • Claims resulting from an illegal or criminal act carried out by the policyholder
  • Losses or expenses you can recover from elsewhere, or are more specifically insured by another policy

You can read the full list of exclusions in your policy documents .

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a short or long term illness or injury you have or have had before you buy travel insurance. This includes having symptoms, tests, diagnosis or medical treatment for a condition.

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can offer cover. If you’re unsure what needs to be declared or if you're unable to find your condition on the medical conditions list, please contact us on 0333 234 9913.

Your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered unless you’ve:

  • Declared them all on your policy
  • Received written confirmation that we’ll cover your medical condition
  • Paid any additional premium in full

Policy terms and conditions apply. Please note, if you’ve had a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 and been prescribed medication, received treatment, or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist for any medical condition in the past two years, this needs to be declared on your policy.

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing conditions or give us incorrect information, your policy may be invalid, and we may refuse all or part of any claim you submit.

Your questions answered

We're sure you'll love our great products but maybe you have a few questions. You can find answers in this section.

What is single trip travel insurance?

If you’re not a frequent traveller and will take one holiday a year, this type of cover might be better for you than an annual policy which covers numerous trips over the year.  Both give protection against things like cancelled trips, lost luggage and a host of sporting activities

When should my single trip travel insurance start?

Your cover begins on the day you selected for it to start and finish (your holiday dates), but your cancellation period starts from the date you bought the cover.

Does travel insurance cover alcohol-related accidents?

Accidents and illnesses caused by drinking too much alcohol aren’t covered by your policy.

Does travel insurance cover repatriation?

Yes, Admiral’s holiday insurance covers emergency medical treatment and repatriation as standard. Our emergency assistance service may arrange for your repatriation to your home area if our medical adviser or the doctor treating you thinks it’s safe. The amount covered depends on the tier you choose:

  • Admiral: up to £10m
  • Gold: up to £15m
  • Platinum: up to £20m

What does single trip travel insurance mean?

Single trip travel insurance covers you for one trip only, lasting up to 365 days. You must set off from and return to the UK.

This is different to an annual travel insurance policy, which covers all the trips (up to 31 days at a time) you take in 12 months.

Can I get one-way travel insurance?

No, Admiral doesn't offer one way travel insurance. To buy our cover, you'll need to be travelling from and returning to the UK.

Travel insurance can be useful, but it's not always necessary.

The key to knowing if you need travel insurance is figuring out your specific risks for any given vacation, then deciding if you can buy coverage that adequately protects you from any financial losses and pitfalls that might occur.

While insurance can be invaluable no matter the traveler and trip, these are the scenarios where it's especially useful:

  • You're concerned about flight disruptions: Flight cancellations and delays are commonplace, especially during the holiday and summer travel seasons. Most trip insurance will reimburse you for incidental expenses that occur while you wait for your flight to depart or for your checked luggage to arrive. Examples include meals and hotel stays if your flight is delayed overnight, or clothing and toiletries you have to buy while you wait for your bags to show up at your destination. Limits apply to this coverage, but it can still pay off if you have to use it.
  • You need the option to cancel your trip: Do you have a medical condition that might suddenly prevent you from traveling? What about young children who are prone to illness, or the possibility of your beach vacation getting rained out during hurricane season ? These are just some of the instances when cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage can help. Offered as an add-on to many insurance policies, this coverage lets you cancel your trip for a reason not covered within a typical trip cancellation benefit. If you need to use this coverage, you'll typically get 50% to 80% of your prepaid travel expenses refunded.
  • You're traveling internationally: U.S. health insurance policies typically don't cover medical care or emergencies overseas, which is why so many people seek out travel medical insurance . According to Allianz Travel Insurance, the average costs of international medical evacuation can range from $15,000 in Mexico all the way up to $220,000 in Asia, Australia and the Middle East. Fortunately, many travel insurance policies offer up to $500,000 in medical evacuation coverage or potentially more.

The best travel insurance options

If one of the above applies and/or you're still curious about travel insurance, you can find the top-rated policies in a variety of categories below.

Any rates listed are for illustrative purposes only. You should contact the insurance company directly for applicable quotes.

What does travel insurance cover?

You'll quickly notice that each travel insurance policy is different from the next. Most plans offer coverage for trip cancellations and interruptions, lost or delayed baggage, medical emergencies, and other common perils; some let you add optional coverage for a rental car , sporting equipment and more.

To give you an overview of the way different travel insurance policies work, the chart below shows the included benefits in several plans from a travel insurance company called Travelex:

Compare Travelex plans and get a quote .

What does travel insurance not cover?

It's important to note that travel insurance policies cannot possibly cover every unexpected bill you encounter before, during or after a trip. That's because travel insurance is not meant to be used like other types of insurance, including traditional medical coverage you have for routine health care expenses.

According to Allianz Travel Insurance , travel insurance "does not cover losses that arise from expected or reasonably foreseeable events or problems." Here are some of the most common exclusions found in travel insurance policies:

  • Civil unrest
  • Epidemics (except COVID-19)
  • Extreme, high-risk sports
  • Government-issued travel bulletins or warnings
  • Natural disasters
  • Nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination
  • Preexisting conditions (unless specifically covered by your plan)
  • Pregnancy-related medical expenses that aren't an emergency (including regular labor and delivery)
  • Terrorist events
  • Travel to participate or train for a sporting event

When should you skip travel insurance?

While the cost of a travel insurance policy can be worth it in the end, there are plenty of travel scenarios where you may not need to purchase a plan. Consider the following situations where buying insurance may not be worth the trouble:

  • You're planning a short road trip within the U.S.: If you're planning a short trip within the U.S. where your own health insurance coverage will apply, you may not need trip insurance for medical expenses. The fact that you're not flying also means you don't have to worry about flight cancellations, and that your luggage will likely remain in your possession the entire trip.
  • You plan to use credit card travel insurance: There may be instances where credit card travel insurance coverage is sufficient for your plans, although only you can make this decision. For example, the popular Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes with trip cancellation and interruption coverage worth up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip; primary rental car coverage for damage or theft worth up to $75,000; lost luggage reimbursement worth up to $3,000 per passenger; emergency evacuation and transportation coverage worth up to $100,000; and more.
  • You bought insurance from your travel provider: There may be instances where the travel insurance coverage from your airline or cruise line is good enough. If you're flying within the U.S. to see a family member and staying in their home for free, for example, you'll likely just need protection against flight cancellations, eligible trip delays, and lost or delayed baggage.
