Everything We Learned from Night One of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour

Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour Opening Night - Stockholm

I t’s the moment everyone’s been waiting for: Beyoncé finally kicked off her Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, Sweden , Wednesday night. This comes close to a year after the release of her seventh album, RENAISSANCE , a period during which she has rarely acknowledged the album with interviews or public performances of the new music, nor put out any music videos to accompany the songs. Nonetheless, the BeyHive was still buzzing with excitement on social media as they shared clips of the stage, the merchandise, the view from different VIP sections, and, most importantly, the artist performing the songs live for the first time.

Beyoncé is gearing up for a second night at the Friends Arena in Stockholm. As she gets ready to hit the stage, let’s take a look at what was revealed in the first show that might offer an indication of what could happen on the rest of the highly anticipated tour. A lot has already happened—from Bey herself addressing the lack of visuals to her celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, in keeping with the themes of the album.

Here’s everything we learned from night one of the Renaissance World Tour.

Beyoncé said not to rush a queen for music videos

omg not beyoncĂ© addressing the visuals i’m crying 😭 #RenaissanceWorldTour pic.twitter.com/xQ9AkBCp3p — rasmus (@rasmusbravado) May 10, 2023

If we haven’t learned by now, Beyoncé releases things when she is good and ready . This is her first solo album since 2016’s Lemonade , so we can’t act surprised that she told her fans to be patient and stop asking about the music videos. Her last solo albums, Lemonade , Beyoncé , and The Gift (a concept album for The Lion King ), all had visual components that included music videos for each song. This built up the expectation that RENAISSANCE would get the same treatment.

Beyoncé is online and knows her fans have been hounding her, and she has finally responded. During a break on the first night, a disembodied voice addressed the crowd as the words it spoke were displayed on stage: “Aww, you mad? Well, there’s no remedy for that, bitches… I know you’ve asked for the visuals. You’ve called for the Queen. But a Queen moves at her own pace, bitch. Decides when she wants to give you a f-cking taste. So get your fork and your spoon if you got one.”

She is cutting out some of her biggest hits to make room for the new album and deep cuts

Attendees at the concert in Stockholm filmed every moment for the world to see on social media, and many of Beyoncé’s fans were quite surprised by some of the songs she decided to perform. She opened the show with “Dangerously In Love” from her debut album of the same name and ran through a string of popular songs, both mainstream hits and fan favorites. At the opening night show, she also performed songs like “Rather Die Young,” “Flaws and All,” and “Black Parade,” which have not gotten much attention from Beyoncé in recent memory.

Beyonce - Rather Die Young đŸŽ€ SINGGGGGG!!!! #RenaissanceWorldTour pic.twitter.com/MEZwAVYNWk — ram (@oyyram) May 10, 2023

Some of Beyoncé’s most popular songs, many of which she has made a point to perform on past tours, are notably missing from the set list. “Run The World” fans, do not worry: she still performs the song. But those who are fans of “If I Were a Boy,” “Single Ladies,” and “Halo,” a notorious closer for Beyoncé—as evidenced by the Homecoming concert film and her Formation World Tour— may be disappointed.

Beyoncé brought back the Les Twins, who have accompanied her on multiple tours and performances

The Les Twins, Laurent and Larry, were approached by Beyoncé years ago after a video of them dancing went viral and they appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show . They were invited to perform with Beyoncé at the Billboard Music Awards in 2011, and she took them on the road with her for the Mrs. Carter World Tour, her joint On The Run Tour with Jay-Z, and her Coachella performance in 2018 . Her fans were excited to see the Les Twins back on stage with her for this new tour.

BeyoncĂ© performing Thique and Les Twins are officially back 😭 #RenaissanceWorldTour pic.twitter.com/zPKiGAPCjG — J (@wenttojarrett) May 10, 2023

It was gay as hell: An unabashed celebration of the LGBTQ+ community

In the lead-up to the album, Beyoncé dedicated the project to her Uncle Johnny, who battled HIV when she was young. He is referenced in the song “HEATED,” and in the outro of the song, Beyoncé takes on the role of MC at a ball (a queer dance party) where she starts “reading.” All of these influences took center stage at the Renaissance World Tour and will make a strong statement when it comes stateside in July, given the wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation being introduced across the country.

BEYONCÉ IS HEATED😭😭😭 #RENAISSANCEtour pic.twitter.com/ddL9s1ByUA — đ—±đ—źđ—»đ—»đ˜†đŸ«§đŸ’š (@beyoncegarden) May 10, 2023

One of the biggest displays of affection for her queer fans came even before the concert started. As concertgoers poured into the stadium, they were greeted with a fake TV error screen, but if you look closely, some of the colors are different. This error screen has the colors of the progress pride flag, which includes colors from the transgender pride flag, as well as brown and black to indicate the greater discrimination experienced by those members of the community. Twitter users joked, “Nashville is gonna be ready to arrest Beyoncé for this, lord Jesus,” referencing the state’s attempt to ban drag shows and broader attempts across the US to infringe on trans people’s rights.

Nashville is gonna be ready to arrest BeyoncĂ© for this lord Jesus pic.twitter.com/jAz6ObNSEQ — đŸ’« (@heyjaeee) May 10, 2023

There is also a ball that happens in the show. Beyoncé makes space for her dancers to vogue and dance to her song, “PURE/HONEY.”

BEYONCÉ HOSTING A BALL IS SO WILD TO ME OMG pic.twitter.com/1JwnRMX8TR — Pocket (@islandthembo) May 10, 2023

Some people might recognize Honey Balenciaga from The House of Balenciaga, which appeared in season two of HBO Max’s Legendary . She was seen voguing on stage with the rest of Beyoncé’s dancers.

@legendaryvoguex HONEY BALENCIAGA @Honey. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE IT GIRL #RENAISSANCE ♬ original sound - Legendary Vogue X

As we’ve seen with other tours from major artists like Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, and the 1975, their fervent fan base will keep everyone up to date on all the song changes, new outfits, and surprises that these artists pull out of their bag of tricks on the road. As we’ve seen with Swift’s notoriously sold-out Eras Tour, her fans made sure to give people who couldn’t get tickets a chance to see the tour play out online. Based on how night one played out, it seems like Beyoncé’s fans will be doing the same for those of us stuck at home.

Correction, May 11: The original version of this story misgendered Honey Balenciaga. She uses she/her pronouns.

Tickets for these dates of Beyoncé's tour are now on sale: What fans need to know

beyonce tour sold out

Tickets to the first of three groupings of  Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour dates went on sale Monday and, not surprisingly, are doing brisk business for the Grammy legend.

In fact, her first show – May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden – sold out Tuesday, prompting the singer to add an additional Stockholm show on May 11.

Back in the U.S., staggering on-sale dates have prevented ticket sale meltdowns  (so far anyway) as experienced when Taylor Swift put her tour tickets up for grabs last year .

Queen Bey, who Sunday night became the  all-time Grammy champion , announced her tour last week and immediately saw fan demand exceed the number of tickets by 800%.

Group A tickets are now on sale. If you're in Groups B and C, there's still some time to get a seat to what promises to be one of the hottest tours in years.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Here's our detailed look on how to get tickets . For the latest timing details, visit Ticketmaster and find the event info for your desired date and city.

Here's what else fans should know:

How much are Beyoncé tickets?

USA TODAY found face-value ticket prices that ranged from $62 and up. Club Renaissance tickets were closer to $1,000, and some floor seats were $300 and bowl seats were around $500. Ticket prices will vary according to city and venue.

Many artists have begun to give concert promoters the OK to make a portion of each show's best seats subject to Dynamic Pricing , which is an attempt to match demand with the supply of premium seats.

The end result can sometimes be prices that far exceed original face value, as some fans of Bruce Springsteen found when dynamically priced seats for his tour cost upwards of $4,000. Only about 12% of Springsteen tickets were sold this way, his management reported.

When are Group B and C ticket sales?

Beyoncé Dazzles With a Sparkling Homage to Black Queer Culture at Levi's Stadium

Please try again

A Black woman in red headpiece and black dress and tall black boots sings sitting on a grand piano

At her first world tour in 2007, a 26 year-old Beyoncé Knowles asked the audience, “Are you ready to be entertained?”

A decade and a half later, at the first California stop of her blockbuster Renaissance World Tour last night, Mrs. Knowles-Carter came ready not just to entertain but to claim her throne. In a two-and-a-half-hour tsunami of songs, Beyoncé commanded the sold-out audience of 50,000 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, leaning heavily into the Black queer music and culture from the metallic world of her latest album, Renaissance .

A Black woman with long hair wisping in the air in black and white outfit is surrounded by dancers on a stage

Rising up out of the floor in a black Marc Jacobs miniskirt and platform boots, Beyoncé greeted a screaming stadium of silver-clad fans with five simple words: “Bay Area… I love you.”

Across an opening six-song block of mostly ballads, Queen Bey delivered a reminder that her vocals are still the foundation of her artistry, perching on a silver grand piano to serve an intimate “1+1.”

Beyoncé then plugged into the computerized world of Renaissance proper. Stepping out in a chrome bodysuit, the pop icon launched into “I’m That Girl,” “Cozy,” and “Alien Superstar,” the hyper-confident first tracks of her seventh studio album. She led her troupe of dancers and live band with the precision of a champion at the top of her game.

Dazzling projections on screen played with the concept of Beyoncé as a cyborg during the first hour, a tongue-in-cheek response to the criticisms that have followed the singer throughout her entire career: that she’s not “human” enough in her pursuit of perfection. As she deadpanned and pop-locked to the “Alien Superstar” lyrics, “I’m one of one / I’m number one / I’m the only one,” she challenged us to reconsider our expectations.

Throughout the show, Beyoncé paid homage to Black queer music and culture that inspired her Renaissance era: the voice of ballroom icon Kevin JZ Prodigy was ever-present, and dancers vogued during the mini ball that unfolded for “Pure/Honey.” The tour marked another acknowledgement of the Ballroom community in mainstream American culture, following the success of shows like FX’s Pose and HBO’s Legendary .

Beyoncé sprinkled musical nods to this community throughout the night like little love letters. To many, the flairs of First Choice’s “ Let No Man Put Asunder ,” or the strains of Diana Ross’ “ Love Hangover ” (expertly delivered in four-part harmony by background vocalists Tiffany Ryan, Karyn Porter, Natalie Imani and Tayler Green), might have just seemed like mere interludes. But to those in the ballroom scene, these tracks feel just as warm and familiar as “Crazy in Love” or “Get Me Bodied.”

A Black woman in black and white outfit is surrounded by dancers on a glittery stage set

Despite the stadium’s size, Beyoncé cultivated genuine moments of connection with the crowd: She invited attendees to sing the key changes in “Love On Top” a capella, and reveled in the sounds of paper and plastic shifting when the audience pulled out their fans for “Heated.” If she would have asked us to pick Levi’s Stadium up and move it six feet to the left, we would have found a way.

Such is the reward for an artist who has spent the past 25 years cultivating a fanbase that transcends the hard lines that the United States draws across race, class, gender and age. There was satisfaction in looking at a stranger and silently agreeing to take “Love on Top” up another half step, or noticing someone else also doing the iconic shoulder shuffle to “Diva.”

One of the night’s most electric moments came when Beyoncé introduced her 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter. Donning an orange and blue jersey with the Roman numerals “IV,” the protégé performed “My Power” and “Black Parade” alongside her mother under a Super Blue Moon, a rare celestial occurrence that won’t cross the sky again for another 14 years. Considering the rare skill required to lead an entire ensemble of trained dancers on a world tour before turning 12, it seemed fitting that Beyoncé would tell us to “give it up for Blue Ivy, a.k.a. Blue Moon.”

A Black woman in red headpiece and black dress and tall black boots sings surrounded by a band in glittery outfits beneath stage lights

From 16-year-olds experiencing their Beyoncé baptism to sisters who traveled from across the country, the Beyhive made the concert into a full experience — celebrating the opulent and the divine diva that lives in us all, and supporting those whose identities put us at risk for violence. These are not far from the tenets of ballroom culture, and it’s what makes the Renaissance World Tour an occasion far beyond a concert.

It was a defiant, joyful release of personal and collective trauma, giving us all the chance to feel like a chromed-out Cinderella for the night. At the end of the show, soaring above the crowd on silver chrome disco horse that fans have jokingly named “Reneigh,” Mrs. Knowles-Carter said that she’ll “never forget tonight.”

Rest assured her Bay Area audience won’t either.

Please don’t be alarmed and try to remain calm — nearly six years since her last solo trek, Beyoncé is back and (hopefully) heading to a city near you before wrapping her tour this fall. The superstar announced her massive Renaissance world tour back in February, marking Beyoncé’s first global solo tour in support of her seventh album of the same name. With the tour winding down, there’s only a few weeks left to score Beyoncé tickets . Get Beyoncé Tickets on Vivid Seats

With the final month of the Renaissance tour approaching, Beyoncé shared a statement on Instagram that “Virgo Season is upon us.” She continued: “This tour has been such a joy and as we approach the last month, my birthday wish is to celebrate with you wearing your most fabulous silver fashions to the shows 8.23 – 9.22! We’ll surround ourselves in a shimmering human disco ball each night. Everybody mirroring each other’s joy. Virgo Season together in the house of chrome. See you there! Your B at RWT.”

Ticket registration and sales for Beyoncé’s tour were previously split into three different groups, and now Beyoncé tickets are on sale for all remaining dates, including on Ticketmaster and Vivid Seats .

Renaissance World Tour 2023 North America Dates

Wondering if Beyoncé is playing a show in your area? Below are the remaining cities the Grammy winner will visit for the 2023 North American leg of the Renaissance tour . Beyoncé previously also added an additional three shows to the tour, including Atlanta (8/14/23), Las Vegas, (8/27/23), and Inglewood, CA (9/4/23).

Not surprisingly, Ticketmaster said it saw a massive demand for the Renaissance tour in a blog on its website. “Fan demand already exceeds the number of tickets available by more than 800% based on the registration numbers in the Group A cities. It is expected that many interested fans may not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply.”

European dates started in May, and Beyoncé embarked on the North American leg of the Renaissance tour over the summer, including stops in Toronto (read our Renaissance tour review ), Los Angeles, Houston, and New Orleans. Though Beyoncé headlined a show in Dubai — her first concert in four years at the time — she didn’t play any songs from Renaissance , Rolling Stone ‘s No. 1 album of 2022 (“the musical highlight of the year”) and a frontrunner at the 65th Grammys .

When Beyoncé dropped Renaissance last summer, Rolling Stone ‘s Mankaprr Conteh wrote that “Beyoncé flung open the doors to a nightclub of her own making, a place where anyone can be the hottest person in the galaxy … the album traverses eras of dance music to conjure the superhuman confidence and deeply human connection of a night out. The thematic triumph of the auteur’s seventh album is this union of the extraordinary and the earthly across it, a duality that lives on the dancefloors Renaissance was inspired by — and in all of us.”

How to Get Beyoncé Tickets With BeyHive Verified Fan Registration

BeyHive Verified Fan Presale started Feb. 6 for those who registered in Group A, followed by Groups B and C.

The first round of the BeyHive presale arrived just one day after Beyoncé made Grammys history on Feb. 5. With 32 wins under her belt, Beyoncé broke the record for the most Grammy Awards in music history, winning the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Renaissance .

“I’d like to thank my beautiful husband, my beautiful three children who are at home watching,” Queen Bey said during her acceptance speech. “I’d like to thank the queer community, for your love, and for inventing this genre. God bless you. Thank you so much to the Grammys.”

While Renaissance didn’t win a trophy for Album of the Year , Beyoncé still took home a slew of other awards, including Best R&B Song for “Cuff It,” Best Dance/Electronic Record for “Break My Soul,” and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa.”

“You changed my life,” Lizzo told Beyoncé during her Grammys acceptance speech for her Record of the Year win. “You sang that gospel medley, and the way you made me feel, I was like, ‘I want to make people feel this way with my music.’ So thank you so much. You clearly are the artist of our lives.”

Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour at Levi's Stadium: Everything you need to know before you go

KGO logo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- Beyoncé brought her much-anticipated Renaissance World Tour show to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara for one night.

It's the 32-time Grammy Award-winning singer's first solo trek in nearly seven years. That said, it was nothing short of an extravaganza for her summer renaissance.

VIDEO: Hot tips to help you get the most out of the Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour experience

Here's everything you need to know about the concert:

When and where is Beyoncé performing?

Queen Bey is performing at Levi's Stadium located at 4900 Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara on Aug. 30.

6 p.m. - Gates open

8 p.m. - Beyoncé is the opener, main act and encore act

Fans heading to her concert may have a little more time to release their wiggle. According to the Mercury News , the show won't adhere to the regular 10 p.m. weeknight curfew at the venue, thanks to an extension granted by city officials.

Instead, Beyoncé can now plan on grooving right up until 11 p.m.

What can we expect?

This is Beyoncé's fifth visit to the South Bay venue. Previous shows include the 2018 On the Run II Tour alongside Jay-Z, the Formation Tour in 2016, and her debut performance at the stadium for the Super Bowl 50 halftime show in the same year.

Reports from the show's kickoff in May describe her Renaissance World Tour as a "sensory-immersive experience." It uses video projections, animations and digital displays to "blur the boundary between reality and the Bey-taverse," according to the SF Chronicle .

While the show focuses on her recent album "Renaissance," there will also be songs spanning her two decade-long career -- including hits like "Dangerously in Love" and "Run the World (Girls)".

There won't be any other supporting acts before Beyoncé's performance -- all we need is Queen Bey.

What do you wear?

Beyoncé has made a birthday Virgo season request for all her remaining shows: please, BeyHive, wear your silver fashions.

"My birthday wish is to celebrate with you wearing your most fabulous silver fashions to the shows 8.23-9.22," she posted on her Instagram story. "We'll surround ourselves in a shimmering human disco ball each night. Everybody mirroring each other's joy. Virgo season together in the house of chrome."

Can you still get tickets?

Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour stop in Santa Clara is sold out, but you can still get them through resellers. Ticketmaster's verified resale tickets start at $310, and StubHub for $292. Prices will change as the concert approaches.

What you can and cannot bring into Levi's Stadium

The biggest thing to know is that Levi's Stadium bag policy is that they only allow clear bags. Anything that is non-transparent is not allowed.

The only exception for a non-transparent bag is a clutch bag smaller than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches.

Approved clear bags no larger than 12" x 6" x 12". These include the following clear bags:

  • Clear Backpacks
  • Clear Fanny Packs
  • Clear Purses
  • One-gallon clear plastic zip lock type bags
  • Small Clutch Bag (the size of an adult hand) (4.5" x 6.5")
  • Seat Cushion

Here are a few of the things you can bring:

  • Binoculars shorter than 6 inches (case prohibited)
  • Cameras with 3-inch lenses or shorter (no lights, tripods, selfie-sticks or monopods)
  • Diaper bags accompanying a child
  • Flags smaller than 2' x 3' (No Poles). They cannot be attached to the facility in any way.
  • Plastic water bottles (factory sealed, no-alcohol, less than 24 ounces)
  • Reusable transparent water bottles (no-alcohol, less than 24 ounces)
  • Plastic water bottles (sealed)
  • Seat cushions
  • Strollers (contact the nearest Playmaker if in need of storing)
  • Sunscreen & hand-powered misters
  • Umbrellas (no obstruction of other fans view)

What to know about parking, drop-offs at Levi's Stadium

According to the Levi's Stadium website , they recommend buying a pre-paid parking pass online and arriving early.

As for dropping off a group of people, Levi's has said there will be a special parent pick-up zone on both nights but those details have yet to be released. It appears the best place to make a drop-off is Great America Parkway, between Tasman Dr. and Old Glory Lane. This is the same location rideshares will drop off concertgoers.

The pick-up location at the end of the concert is in Red Lot 7.

To find out more details about parking and drop-offs see the stadium's policies here .

Can I tailgate at Levi's Stadium before or during concert?

The short answer is no. Levi's Stadium prohibited tailgating for the Taylor Swift's concerts and the same goes for Beyoncé's show.

"There will be no designated viewing area outside of Levi's Stadium. Fans without event tickets will not be permitted to congregate in parking areas or on the streets."

Also if you do not have a ticket to the concert and want to listen from outside Levi's Stadium, officials say that won't be possible. Only ticketed fans will be allowed into the parking lots.

SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Friday, Sept. 1 — her first of three sold out shows as she returns Saturday, Sept. 2 and Monday, Sept. 4 — was filled with an enthusiastic crowd that were decked out in shimmery outfits and they were eager to dance, sing and even shed a few tears.

“Los Angeles, I love you,” Beyoncé sang as she made her grand entrance, elevated from a platform in the middle of the stage. The sentiment was mutual, as fans dedicated a full minute to shower her with applause as she took a moment to bask in it while taking in this massive audience of more than 70,000.

Throughout the night, this mutual sense of adoration continued, with Queen Bey loving on the crowd and them loving her right back.

Despite the fact that the global superstar was already an hour behind schedule, the audience didn’t show signs of impatience. DJ Khaled made sure to kickstart the party as he made his way on stage about 20 minutes before the main event commenced. A Khaled set wouldn’t be complete without his signature shouts of “We the best!” and the addition of surprise guest appearances. He brought out 2 Chainz, Offset from Migos, Coi Leray and Lil Wayne to hype the fans.

“Not going to lie, when the queen and Jay-Z called me to come and open this up, I actually shed a tear, this is a big moment for us all,” Khaled shared.

“We’ve been looking forward to this all year, this is our vacation,” Breanna Nayala, a fan from Mexico City who took a flight the previous night with three friends, who were all now decked out in silver dresses, shared. “This just feels like we’re witnessing history.”

These three evenings at SoFi Stadium are a part of the tour’s final weeks. It broke global ticket sales records and is now the highest-grossing tour by any female artist or Black artist in history. Beyoncé will also be celebrating her 42nd birthday at the stadium during her final sold out show on Sept. 4 and she asked her fans to party alongside her and to wear glittery, silver attire to mark the occasion.

“My favorite part of playing these shows is looking at y’all and seeing these beautiful outfits,” she said with a big smile, scanning the crowd. “I know I made my request and you delivered, let’s celebrate that.”

Of course fans honored Bey’s wishes and were sporting anything and everything silver including platinum cowboy hats, wings, corsets, glitter, sequins, feathers and every glam item in between.

The tour follows the momentum of Beyoncé’s latest 2022 record, “Renaissance,” an ode to the Black LGBTQ+ community with a house-style sound noted from ballroom culture. Additionally, the record is dedicated to her uncle Johnny, a queer man who died when she was just 17, someone she’s noted as a prominent figure while growing up.

By paying dues to the album’s story, Beyoncé and her squad of backup dancers made sure to deliver plenty of voguing, death drops and ballroom culture moments that felt like a love letter for all of her LGBTQ+ fans.

The nearly three-hour performance mainly centered around tracks from “Renaissance” rather than relying on past hits. As she kicked off with “I’m That Girl,” the opening track from the album, Beyoncé appeared on stage in a bedazzled silver bodysuit and matching thigh-high silver boots. While flipping through songs like “Cuff It” “Cozy,” “Alien Superstar” and “Break My Soul,” she gave fans an up-close view as she made her way to a circular stage that nestled among the Club Renaissance seats, transforming the moment into a full-on dance party.

Between playing a few songs, Mrs. Carter would seamlessly transition to introduce a new act by leaving the stage and arriving with a new look that ranged from silver and black outfits to a vibrant pink dress adorned with flashy silver jewelry. The fashion choices were among some the highlights of the night as she exuded high fashion and fans responded to every single piece.

There were a few blasts from the past moments with hits like “Dangerously in Love,” “Diva,” “Crazy In Love,” “Naughty Girl” and “1+1,” which saw her sitting on top of a silver piano for the love ballad. For “Love on Top,” she made sure to cut off the track and let the crowd sing a capella as she bopped to the beat with the mic while fans sang every line.

One of the biggest moments came during “My Power,” when Bey introduced her daughter and brought Blue Ivy Carter to the stage. At just 11, Blue Ivy was grooving to the smash front and center with a row of backup dancers behind her. Rocking silver slacks and a silver-lettered Los Angeles T-shirt, she was in style just like her mother. As the song closed, the mother and daughter power duo stood there to enjoy the piercing applause with Blue Ivy throwing up peace signs and smiling from ear to ear. It was a touching moment, as Beyoncé looked over her daughter proudly.

“The fact that I get to come onto this stage and do what I love each night is a blessing,” Beyoncé shared as the night closed. “It’s because of you that I get to live out my dream. I’m here because of you.”

The Great Concert Ticket Bust

Big musical acts are canceling tours. Are Taylor Swift and Beyoncé the only artists who can sell out shows?

beyonce tour sold out

It's probably really great to be Jennifer Lopez . Of my running mental list of people whose lives seem absolutely awesome, she easily falls within the top 10. But just because she lives a charmed life doesn't mean things go great all of the time, and, lately, things have been a little less than ideal for the actor/singer/dancer from the Bronx. Her relationship with Ben Affleck is said to be on the rocks, and beyond any personal woes, she's got professional pains, too. Namely, JLo is apparently having a hard time selling tickets.

Lopez announced a tour to support her new album ( and truly wild accompanying movie ), "This Is Me
Now," earlier this year, but she wound up canceling a bunch of dates amid weak sales. She then rebranded the tour as a greatest-hits show, but fans still weren't tripping over themselves to see her. At the end of May, JLo decided to cancel her tour , saying she was "heartsick" but needed to spend time with her family and friends.

In JLo's defense, she's not the only one having trouble packing venues. The rock duo The Black Keys scrapped a planned arena tour and are expected to announce a "revised" set of dates at smaller venues. On social media, fans have noted that some shows from the pop artists Troye Sivan and Charli XCX as well as the band Wallows appear to be undersold. The Latin trap artist Bad Bunny recently pulled out of a show in Minneapolis, reportedly amid weak sales. Coachella lagged this year, and there's been chatter about a variety of acts not hitting home runs sales-wise in some instances and locations, including Cardi B, Justin Timberlake, and Pink.

This doesn't mean the entire concert industry is in disarray. Taylor Swift is unstoppable . As is Beyoncé whenever she is on the road. Acts such as Luke Combs, Zach Bryan, and Olivia Rodrigo are selling a ton. Dead & Company, the successor band to the Grateful Dead, is adding dates at the Las Vegas Sphere. Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster and rules the roost in the live-events space, had a huge 2023, estimating that 145 million fans attended more than 50,000 events, a 20% increase in fans over the year before. However, not everything is going smoothly for everyone. For some artists, conditions aren't so favorable, and they're struggling to pull in the crowds they anticipated, at least right out of the gate.

"Concert promotion is a betting business. You don't always win. And sometimes, you can be humbled," said Jarred Arfa, the head of global music at Independent Artist Group, whose client roster includes Billy Joel, 50 Cent, and Metallica.

Ticket prices are just astronomical right now.

There are a combination of factors that are dragging down some artists' ticket sales. For one thing, a lot of acts are on tour at the moment. In the wake of the pandemic, artists have been eager to get back out there and recoup lost time and money. Even if the return hasn't been smooth , basically anyone who can be touring is, meaning the space is crowded and oversaturated.

"You'd never before had a moment in time where all the horses lined up at the starting gate and they all went out on the road at the same time," said Gary Witt, the CEO and co-owner of The Pabst Theater Group in Milwaukee.

The world really is your oyster right now when it comes to catching a show. But it also means that people have a ton of options, and there is only so much time to go around. Maybe you already saw your favorite artist when they first went on the road after the worst of COVID passed, and you don't feel especially inspired to go see them again. Or you like the band or singer in question plenty, but not enough to go through all the rigamarole of seeing them live. Either way, the once feverish demand for that ticket has probably cooled.

Pricing is also a factor. Anyone who's looked for concert tickets recently has probably been gobsmacked at the cost. Many consumers have been spending through inflation , even if begrudgingly so, but no one's budget is limitless, especially as prices for basically everything — including tickets to live events — remain elevated. Pollstar calculated that the average ticket price for the top 100 tours in the first quarter of this year was $123.25, an all-time. Its data indicates that the average ticket price for a Bad Bunny ticket is $290, for Justin Timberlake $216, and for Nicki Minaj $149.

"Ticket prices are just astronomical right now," said David "5-1" Norman, an industry veteran who has toured with Prince, Green Day, and Alicia Keys. "And if you're bringing a child with you, and then you have to stay overnight and gas and hotel and then food, that stuff adds up."

Just having the big song doesn't necessarily always translate into ticket sales.

Going on tour is always a gamble based on numerous factors including ticket history, streaming performance, email list sizes, and online attention. But there are no guarantees that any of that will translate to hard ticket sales . There are artists who might have massive numbers online but whose fans are only surface-level and don't really care enough to appear at a show. The way artists break out on social media nowadays makes it even harder to figure out whether that might be the case. Having a couple of hits on Spotify or TikTok doesn't mean someone can sell out a stadium.

That's why, in some cases, there seems to be a degree of overshooting. Artists (and their agents and managers and promoters) are trying to sell out bigger venues than they can. A more conservative approach would be to book a handful of big venues and see how it goes before committing to more, but that's not the approach everyone is taking.

"We have some hard-rock artists who you've never even heard of and they sell out everywhere, but they have that loyal fan base," Arfa said. "Just having the big song doesn't necessarily always translate into ticket sales." For every five or six acts that are doing great touring, one is a little clunky, he added. "We're having a couple conversations where we're thinking it may be best to push into Q1 of next year because of a high level of traffic on the road right now."

A spokesperson for Live Nation said in a statement that over 100 million tickets have been sold this year, even with fewer stadium shows touring, and that sales for shows in arenas, amphitheaters, theaters, and clubs are up "double digits" from last year. "Every year some events naturally fall off for various reasons, and in 2024 across all venue types we've seen a 4% cancellation rate – which is flat to last year," the spokesperson said.

Every artist and situation is unique. Bad Bunny may not have been able to sell such high-priced tickets in Minneapolis, but he's sold a ton of other places. JLo seems to have a lot more on her plate than trying to tour right now, and the Black Keys will probably do fine in smaller venues. A representative for Live Nation, which is producing the Troye Sivan/Charli XCX show, said the tour had sold out some dates and was 70% sold across the board, implying there had been misconceptions about sales online. (They said Wallows is selling "well" without providing on-the-record specifics and pointed to public statements from the Black Keys and Lopez, the tours of which Live Nation all produced.) Hiccups are not all about ticket sales, either. Kid Cudi canceled his tour this year because he broke his foot jumping off the stage during Coachella, and many acts aren't specifically saying the problem is sales when they do cancel.

There are strategies acts undertake to try to freshen things up for fans and boost sales, such as combining forces or bringing in special guests. Def Leppard is touring with Journey this year, and last year it toured with Mötley CrĂŒe. There's always good old marketing. Live Nation recently wrapped its "concert week," which offers a variety of tickets at $25 — a good way to push tickets that aren't moving.

There is, of course, a huge issue that undergirds the entire conversation: Buying tickets is supremely annoying. You have to really want to see a show to try to navigate the labyrinthine purchase process. Live Nation-Ticketmaster dominates the market, which critics — including the Department of Justice, which is suing the company over claims of anti-competitive practices — say stifles innovation, allows for unfair markups, and contributes to an overall negative experience for fans . Fees on tickets are confoundingly high and seemingly endless . Bot armies snatch up tickets when they go on sale and flip them on the secondary markets for exorbitantly high prices. (One piece of silver lining here is that this year's lowered demand has resulted in lower resale ticket prices. SeatGeek says the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert this year is $214; last year, it was $257, though a lot of that was due to Taylor Swift and BeyoncĂ©.)

"The time when customer experiences aren't good is usually when there's a monopoly involved," Witt, from The Pabst Theater Group, said.

JLo, of course, will be fine — she is very rich, famous, and beautiful after all. Her fans will survive and will probably have a chance to see her perform again. But next time she hits the road, they'd be wise to scoop up her tickets fast so "This Is Me
Whenever In the Future" doesn't get axed, too.

The ‘funflation’ economy is dying as a consumer attitude of ‘hard pass’ takes over and major artists cancel concert tours

Concert ticket prices are falling from their epic highs last summer.

For the past few years, live music has enjoyed an explosive post-pandemic revival, as “revenge spending” fans itching to get back into concert venues post-pandemic paid top dollar for massive stadium tours such as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour.

But a recent spate of tour cancellations and changes by well-known artists indicate that consumers’ appetite for  live music may be slowing.

On Friday, Live Nation announced that Jennifer Lopez was canceling her “This Is Me
Live” tour to spend more time with her family , a week after the Black Keys said they were scrapping an arena tour scheduled for this fall in favor of smaller venues , even after the single from their new album topped Billboard ’s Alternative Airplay chart in March.

The announcements are the most recent signs that at least one facet of the “funflation” or economy that emerged in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic —when consumers eager to make up for lost experiences boosted demand for things like flights and concert tickets—isn’t as strong as it was last year.

Jarred Arfa, head of global music at the touring agency Independent Artist Group, said he believes the current concert environment is less of a slowdown than a return to a pre-pandemic atmosphere, where “there’s a lot of winners, but not everything is winning.”

“The traffic is catching up to itself a little bit, where you still have so many artists on the road, and people have seen them already,” Arfa told Fortune . “Some of that novelty factor post-COVID is no longer there.”

One obvious factor is consumer fatigue with inflated costs. Since the world emerged from pandemic lockdowns, the price of concert tickets has soared. According to the music trade publication Pollstar , the average ticket price of a top 100 music tour between 2019 and 2023 increased at a rate that well outpaced inflation, jumping from $91.18 to $122.84.

“The days where there was enough demand to sell out arenas at top dollar just isn’t there in this live events economy,” Dave Clark, editor of the entertainment-industry tracker Ticket News, said  in an interview with NBC News .

“People are seeing some of the prices they’re asking and just saying, ‘Hard pass.’”

Arfa also said there are more artists touring now than in the past—and not just because of time off during lockdown. A big part factor is the streaming era, in which touring generates much better returns for artists than what they make from streams. But since fans’ time—and wallets—are finite, that ultimately translates to a smaller slice of the pie for some performers.

“You have people who normally might have spaced out their tours
who are now jumping back in,” Arfa said. “Maybe they would have taken a couple years off, but they got those COVID years off.”

“The traffic is still probably a little bit higher than it normally would be,” he added.

It isn’t just tours that are settling down. The first weekend for Coachella, the highest-grossing festival in North America, didn’t sell out for almost a month . That’s far longer than in 2023 or 2022, when both weekends sold out in around 40 minutes following a two-year pandemic hiatus. On the day the 2024 festival opened, Billboard reported that approximately 80% of the 250,000 tickets had been sold .

Ticketmaster was among the biggest beneficiaries of the “revenge spending” phenomenon. Its parent, Live Nation , reported its biggest year ever in 2023 before the DOJ sued the company in May, alleging it had violated antitrust laws . Following last year’s Taylor Swift and BeyoncĂ© megatours, the ticketing giant reported a $10 billion increase in total revenue , while concert attendance was up 20%.

But there are early signs that growth might slow down in 2024. Last week, Axios reported that resale prices for summer concert tickets are down about 17% (or an average of $45 per ticket) from last year, citing data from SeatGeek. In May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reported that April prices for movie and concert tickets climbed 3.4% from last year , the lowest increase since 2021.

What’s more, in addition to the DOJ lawsuit, concert cancellations, and popular discontent, Ticketmaster is also dealing with a data breach affecting millions of customers.

In a statement, Live Nation Entertainment, the parent company of Ticketmaster, said “overall market data shows demand is strong – sales are up from last year with over 100 million tickets sold, even with fewer large stadium shows touring in 2024.” The company added that cancellation rates for concerts this year were around 4%, on par with last year.

For the biggest artists on tour this summer—Olivia Rodrigo, Morgan Wallen, and Zach Bryan—there’s still plenty of demand. The average resale price on SeatGeek for Rodgrigo’s “Guts” tour is $571, according to Axios. But even that is a far cry from the astronomical resale prices posted for the Eras Tour last summer , which reached into the thousands.

“On the megatour level, I think there may be a few less of them this year,” Arfa said. “Some artists just automatically go out every couple of years and think they’re bulletproof. And that’s not the case. Not everyone can be Taylor and BeyoncĂ©.”

Are Big Music Tours Really in Trouble?

High-profile cancellations from Jennifer Lopez and the Black Keys have armchair analysts talking. But industry insiders say live music is still thriving.

A band performs on a large stage; the kick drum reads Black Keys.

By Ben Sisario and Joe Coscarelli

For the concert business, 2023 was a champagne-popping year. The worst of the pandemic comfortably in the rearview, shows big and small were selling out, with mega-tours by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Drake and Bruce Springsteen pushing the industry to record ticket sales.

This year, as with much of the economy, success on the road seems more fragile. A string of high-profile cancellations, and slow sales for some major events, have raised questions about an overcrowded market and whether ticket prices have simply gotten too expensive.

Most conspicuously, Jennifer Lopez and the Black Keys have canceled entire arena tours. In the case of the Black Keys — a standby of rock radio and a popular touring draw for nearly two decades — the fallout has been severe enough that the band has parted ways with its two managers, the industry giant Irving Azoff and Steve Moir. Through a representative, Azoff and Moir said they had “amicably parted” with the band.

At Coachella, usually so buzzy that it sells out well before any performers are announced, tickets for the second of the California festival’s two weekends were still available by the time it opened in April.

Those issues have stoked headlines about a concert business that may be in trouble. But the reality, many insiders say, is more complex, with no simple explanation for problems on a range of tours, and a business that may be leveling out after a couple of extraordinary years when fans rushed to shows after Covid-19 shutdowns.

“I think it’s normalized back to the pre-Covid era,” said Rich Schaefer, the president of global touring at AEG, the company behind tours by Swift and the Rolling Stones. “Hot acts are going to sell tickets. Middle acts are going to sell, but take longer. And acts that don’t have a lot of heat on them are going to struggle.”

In a statement, Live Nation said that so far this year, sales are up from the same point in 2023, with over 100 million tickets sold. “Every year,” the company said, “some events naturally fall off for various reasons, and in 2024 across all venue types we’ve seen a 4 percent cancellation rate — which is flat to last year.”

In addition to Swift’s Eras Tour, which continues to be a phenomenon in Europe, hot events this year include tours by Olivia Rodrigo, Coldplay, Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan. Other festivals, like Lollapalooza in Chicago, have had notably strong sales.

Still, prominent cancellations of high-priced shows is another possible P.R. headache for Live Nation, the owner of Ticketmaster, which last month was sued by the Justice Department over accusations that it operates an illegal monopoly that stifles competition and results in high prices and fees. Live Nation has denied those allegations.

The key worry throughout the business is that ticket prices, which have been rising steadily for years , may now be so high that they are deterring fans from all but their once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list shows. Tickets, even for many major tours, no longer vanish instantly.

When Billie Eilish put her latest arena tour on sale in April, for example, upper-deck seats at some venues were going for over $200, and took weeks to sell.

A joint tour by the rapper Future and the producer Metro Boomin, who shared a pair of No. 1 albums and a chart-topping hit single earlier this year, has also lagged. Even with tickets as low as $44.50, the opening-night concert in Kansas City, Mo., in July, still has thousands of seats for sale at all levels. To the chagrin of underperforming acts, the strength or weakness of sales is now evident in real time on Ticketmaster, which displays blue dots for every unsold seat (and pink dots for ones being offered for resale).

Last year, the average ticket price for one of the top 100 tours around the world was $131, up 23 percent from the year before, according to Pollstar, a trade publication that tracks concert tickets.

Steve Martin of Paladin Artists, a booking agent for classic rock acts like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, said that below the level of pop superstars like Swift, artists have become acutely aware of the economic pressures facing their fans.

“The meat of the business is made up of things like classic rock packages,” Martin said. “Those people are much more price sensitive. Working-class people are concerned about groceries and the price of gas.”

No single explanation can cover the range of problems in the live market this year. Some tours, like the Black Keys’, may simply be a matter of the band overestimating demand.

In 2021, the Black Keys left their longtime manager for a new partnership with Azoff and Moir , who also work with John Mayer and the Grateful Dead spinoff Dead & Co., and the band later praised Azoff’s “focus on touring and selling our tickets.” But even after a new album — the band’s 12th — was released in April, concert sales lagged, leading to the cancellations and a housecleaning behind the scenes.

In a social media post after the tour was abandoned, the group said it would “make some changes” to its touring plan to offer a more “intimate experience.” A representative for the band’s label did not respond to a request for comment on the management changes.

Nostalgia alone may not be enough to easily pack venues across the country. Lopez, though still a movie star and a tabloid feature, has not had a hit song in a decade . Tickets to see the ongoing arena tour from Justin Timberlake have been available on both the primary and secondary markets, with prices on StubHub sometimes falling well below face value.

Fans outside of high-demand markets like New York and Los Angeles do not always need to rush the digital queue the moment tickets go on sale. Some genres, like hip-hop, tend to move tickets more slowly than others, but can still sell out before showtime. The latest leg of Nicki Minaj’s tour, for example, is a sea of blue dots.

Many factors go into the price of the ticket, from the costs of gas and crew salaries — which have risen since the pandemic — to bigger-picture economics amortized over the course of an entire tour. Global promoters like Live Nation and AEG often offer artists a guaranteed payment covering all their shows; a bigger guarantee means that prices must be higher to recoup that investment.

Dan Wall, Live Nation’s executive vice president of corporate and regulatory affairs, said that while promoters may suggest pricing based on a deal guarantee, “it’s the artist’s team that ultimately decides ticket prices.”

Armchair analysis of ticket sales has become yet another element of modern fandom to be memed and weaponized, upping the stakes. As industry watchers on social media race to demonstrate the dominance of their favorites, screen grabs of available seats for upcoming concerts have gone viral, leading to media coverage.

“I feel like people online just sort of realized that you can look at seat maps and see how shows are doing,” said Sam Hunt, an executive at the touring agency Wasserman Music. “So I think part of it is that maybe not a ton has changed in the touring business — not every swing is a home run — but people are paying more attention to it and having a typically internet-y response.”

Still, the perception among some music fans is that large-scale concerts are more of a luxury than they once were.

Cliff Russell, 39, said in an interview that his two teenage daughters were interested in seeing blockbuster tours this year from acts like Rodrigo, Drake, Eilish and Swift.

But after the family, living outside Toronto, spent big for tickets to see Swift’s Eras Tour in November — with costs totaling near $3,000 for four tickets, “not counting transportation, parking, souvenirs” — spending another $300 per ticket for upper-deck seats to see another pop star just wasn’t in the cards.

“What was once a holy grail ticket price is now the average,” Russell said. “You’ve got to be really picky and choosy.”

Drake’s ‘Members Only’ Tour Merch Violated Trademarks of Iconic ’80s Brand, Lawsuit Claims

The company behind the trendy 1980s jackets says Drake's tour t-shirts — which make reference to his song of the same name — infringe its trademark rights.

  • By Bill Donahue

Drake In Concert - Atlanta, GA

Drake ’s production company is facing a lawsuit from the apparel brand Members Only for allegedly selling tour merch that infringed the company’s trademarks.

The case, filed Tuesday (June 12) in New York federal court, claims that Drake’s company (Away From Home Touring Inc.) has been selling t-shirts, including on his recently-wrapped It’s All a Blur Tour, that are emblazoned with the words “Members Only.”

Can Drake & Kendrick Sue Each Other For Defamation Over Ugly Diss Track Accusations?

To be clear, the lawsuit doesn’t claim Drake is selling counterfeit Members Only jackets — the iconic 1980s fad the company made famous. Drake’s shirts feature that phrase (written in large script across the front) simply because it’s the name of a track on his 2023 album For All the Dogs .

Trending on Billboard

“The fact that ‘Members Only’ is a song on Drake’s album ‘For All the Dogs’ does not obviate the likelihood of confusion or give [him] a license to use our client’s ‘Members Only’ marks in such a confusing manner, particularly on or in connection with apparel items,” the company’s lawyers write.

Calling “Members Only” a “famous household name,” the lawsuit claims that Drake’s shirts are going to confuse fans into thinking the real Members Only brand is somehow involved: “Away From Home’s use of ‘Members Only’ … is likely to cause confusion, mistake, and deception among consumers as to the origin of Away From Home’s infringing T-shirts.”

Under U.S. trademark law, the context of how a brand name is used is crucial. Two companies can use the exact same name for different products and peacefully co-exist — think Delta Airlines and Delta Faucet, or Dove soap and Dove chocolate. But when used on the same types of products, a similar name can become trademark infringement.

In Drake’s case, his use of the “Members Only” name as a song title almost certainly would not have infringed JR Apparel World rights — both because they’re different products and because the First Amendment gives added protection to use trademarks in creative works like songs. But by using that same name on apparel, the lawsuit says, the legal calculus has changed.

“Away From Home sold … goods bearing the mark ‘Members Only’ that are identical, overlapping, and/or highly similar to the goods that JR Apparel sells bearing its MEMBERS ONLY Marks,” the company’s attorneys write.

A rep for Drake did not immediately return a request for comment.

Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Justin Timberlake are struggling to sell concert tickets: Here’s why

Jennifer Lopez can’t sell concert tickets.

Nor can artists like Bad Bunny, The Black Keys, Justin Timberlake and Pink, according to reports.

Even Coachella was reportedly more lackluster than in previous years.

Yet, Taylor Swift is holding the most profitable concert tour in music history.

And BeyoncĂ© kills it whenever she’s on the road.

While not all artists’ issues are the same, there do seem to be some universal themes impacting the music business.

There are a lot of concerts going on in a post-pandemic world, ticket prices are climbing and it’s not easy to obtain tickets.

The average ticket price for the top 100 tours in the first quarter was a record $123.25 , according to data from concert ticket tracker Pollstar, cited by Business Insider.

Plus, artists may be overestimating their appeal by booking massive venues after delivering one hit.

Last week, Live Nation announced J.Lo’s tour was canceled and the singer/actor was taking time to be with her family and friends.

There was speculation the issue was the pop diva’s crumbling marriage to Ben Affleck.

But sales of her latest album have been weak and the companion film on Amazon Prime Video got panned. J.Lo’s planned Las Vegas residency is also in jeopardy .

Rock duo The Black Keys also scrapped a planned arena tour, while fans flagged that some shows for Troye Sivan, Charli XCX and Wallows appear to be undersold, according to reports.

Reggaeton star Bad Bunny reportedly canceled his Minneapolis show due to poor sales, though a source close to the tour told The Post he canceled one date and that was only because of “extenuating circumstances.”

There have been murmurs that headliners Justin Timberlake and Pink also have been slow to sell tickets, BI reported.

Live Nation, the owner of Ticket Master, clapped back, with a spokeswoman telling The Post Timberlake and Pink “are doing extremely well.”

She also emailed, “Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s SWEAT tour has multiple sold out dates and is over 70% sold across the board with 4 months left until it kicks off in September,” and the Wallows tour “is selling well.”

Live Nation said it has sold 100 million tickets so far this year, up from the same point last year. In addition, the company said, “Every year some events naturally fall off for various reasons, and in 2024 across all venue types we’ve seen a 4% cancellation rate — which is flat to last year.”

Zach Bryan tickets went on sale to the general public on September 8, 2023. They’re still available now, though selling out pretty quickly. It’s a good idea to buy now, since the prices will only go up as availability goes down.

How Much Are Zach Bryan Tickets?

How much it costs to buy Zach Bryan tickets can vary wildly depending on what city the show is in, where the seat is in the venue, and whether the appearance is at a festival or not.

The least expensive ticket we found is $62 for the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on August 11, though VividSeats. Overall, the lowest options for most shows hover around $150 per ticket. Prices are usually higher for festival appearances and with any add-ons like box seats or a VIP bar.

It’s also worth noting that Canadian concerts tend to be pricey, with the most affordable Ticketmaster seats for Rogers Place in Edmonton costing about $478USD. For the Vancouver concert, the lowest price is $618USD with the best seats costing $869USD.

How Is Zach Bryan Selling His Tickets?

Zach Bryan tickets are available at every major ticket outlet, including ticket brokers. If a show is sold out, you can sign up to join a waitlist, and also check the reseller sites.

Why Are Zach Bryan Tickets So Expensive?

It’s not only Zach Bryan Tickets that can be expensive. Often, the policies of the major, mainstream ticket brokers mean that concert tickets can be priced dynamically—meaning the price can change with demand. Bryan is a Grammy-winning mega country star whose fans can’t seem to get enough of, so some shows sell out fast. Then, anyone reselling their tickets on a broker site can also raise their prices due to demand.

Fans are following taylor swift to europe after finding eras tour tickets less costly there.

Taylor Swift fans

LONDON (AP) — Thousands of ride-or-die Taylor Swift fans who missed out on her US concert tour last year or didn’t want to buy exorbitantly priced tickets to see her again found an out-of-the-way solution: Fly to Europe.

The pop star is scheduled to kick off the 18-city Europe leg of her record-setting Eras Tour  in Paris on Thursday, and planeloads of Swifties plan to follow Miss Americana across the pond in the coming weeks. The arena where Swift is appearing said Americans bought 20% of the tickets for her four sold-out shows. Stockholm, the tour’s next stop, expects about 10,000 concertgoers from the US.

A concert might sound like an odd raison d’etre for visiting a foreign country, especially when fans can watch the Eras Tour from home via the documentary now streaming on Disney+ . Yet online travel company Expedia says continent-hopping by Swift’s devotees is part of a larger trend it dubbed “tour tourism” while observing a pattern that emerged during BeyoncĂ©’s “Renaissance” world tour .

Taylor Swift

Some North American fans who plan to fly overseas for the Eras Tour said they justified the expense after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made seeing Swift perform abroad no more costly — and potentially cheaper — than catching her closer to home.

“They said, ’Wait a minute, I can either spend $1,500 to go see my favorite artist in Miami, or I can take that $1,500 and buy a concert ticket, a round-trip plane ticket, and three nights in a hotel room,” Melanie Fish, an Expedia spokesperson and travel expert, said.

That was the experience of Jennifer Warren, 43, who lives in St. Catharines, a city in the Niagara region of Ontario. She and her 11-year-old son love Swift but had no luck scoring what she considered as decently priced tickets in the US. Undeterred, Warren and her husband decided to plan a European vacation around wherever she managed to get seats. It turned out to be Hamburg, Germany.

“You get out, you get to see the world, and you get to see your favorite artist or performer at the same time, so there are a lot of wins to it,” said Warren, who works as the director of research and innovation for a mutual insurance company.

Taylor Swift

The three VIP tickets she secured close to the stage — “I would call it brute-force dumb luck” — cost 600 euros ($646) each. Swift subsequently announced six November tour dates in Toronto, within driving distance of Warren’s home. “Absolute nose-bleed seats” already are going for 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,194) on secondary resale sites like Viagogo, Warren said.

Tour tourism: Is it really a thing?

Hard-core fans trailing their favorite singer or band on tour is not a new phenomenon. “Groupie” emerged in the late 1960s as a somewhat derogatory word for the ardent followers of rock bands. Deadheads took to the road in the 1970s to pursue the Grateful Dead from city to city.

More recently, music festivals like California’s Coachella and England’s Glastonbury, and concert residencies in Las Vegas by the likes of Elton John, Lady Gaga and Adele, have attracted travelers to places they wouldn’t otherwise visit, Fish noted.

Taylor Swift

Travel and entertainment analysts have also spoken of a pent-up consumer demand for “experiences” over material objects since the coronavirus pandemic. Some think the willingness of music lovers to broaden their fandom horizons is part of the same mass cultural correction.

“It does seem like it’s more than a structural shift, maybe a personality transformation we all went through,” said Natalia Lechmanova, the chief Europe economist for the Mastercard Economics Institute.

As Swift hopscotches across Europe, Lechmanova expects restaurants and hotels to see the same boost that Mastercard observed within a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) radius of concert venues in the US cities she visited in 2023. The US dollar’s strong value against the euro may also increase retail spending on apparel, memorabilia, beauty products and supplies for the friendship bracelets fans exchange as part of the Eras Tour experience, the economist said.

Former college roommates Lizzy Hale, 34, who lives in Los Angeles, and Mitch Goulding, 33, who lives in Austin, Texas, already had tickets to see the Eras Tour in LA last summer when they decided to try to get ones for Paris, London or Edinburgh, Scotland, too. They saw a Europe concert trip as a makeup for travel plans they had in May 2020 to celebrate Goulding’s birthday but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

Goulding managed to secure VIP tickets for one of Swift’s three Stockholm shows. He, Hale and two other friends scheduled a 10-day trip that also includes time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“As people who enjoy traveling and enjoy music, if you can find an opportunity to combine the two, it’s really special,” said Hale, who is pregnant with her first child.

For Stockholm, 120,000 Swifties can’t be wrong

The local economic impact of what the zeitgeist has termed “Swiftonomics” and the “Swift lift” can be considerable. It’s no wonder the exclusive arrangement Singapore’s government made with Swift to make the city-state her only tour stop in Southeast Asia earlier this year aroused regional jealousy.

Taylor Swift with a fan

No European governments have complained of their countries not being among the dozen selected for the Europe leg of the Eras Tour, although some fans have expressed surprise that Gelsenkirchen, a city with a population of about 264,000 is one of the three cities in Germany that made the cut.

Airbnb reported Tuesday that searches on its platform for the U.K. cities where Swift is performing in June and August — Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London — increased an average of 337% when tickets went on sale last summer.

Not to be outdone when it comes to trend-spotting, the property rentals company cited the demand as an example of “passion tourism,” or travel “driven by concerts, sports and other cultural events.”

In Stockholm, 120,000 out-of-towners from 130 countries — among them 10,000 from the US — are expected to swarm Sweden’s capital this month, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist said. Stockholm is the only Scandinavian city on Swift’s tour, and airlines added extra flights from nearby Denmark, Finland and Norway to bring people to the May 17-19 shows, he said.

Swiftie holding friendship bracelets

The city’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out even though prices skyrocketed for the tour dates, Bergqvist said. Concert visitors are expected to pump around 500 million Swedish kroner, or over $46 million, into the local economy over the course of their stays, an estimate that does not include what they paid for Swift tickets or to get to Sweden, he said.

“So this is going to be huge for the tourism sector in Sweden and Stockholm in particular,” Bergqvist said.

Nightclubs, restaurants and bars are seizing the opportunity to cater to fans with Taylor Swift-themed events, such as karaoke, quizzes and after-concert dance parties.

Houston resident Caroline Matlock, 29, saw Swift more than a year ago when the Eras Tour came to the Texas city. Now she’s making more friendship bracelets and trying to learn a few words of Swedish as she prepares to see the 3 1/2-hour show in Stockholm. The idea of seeing Swift in Europe was her friend’s, and Matlock needed some persuading at first.

Taylor Swift

“I was like, ‘I only want to go if it’s a country I haven’t been to. I’ve seen Taylor Swift,’” she said.

Visiting the Scandinavian cities of Oslo and Gothenburg is on their itinerary. The concert is the last night of the trip and Matlock looks forward to interacting with Swifties from other countries: “Americans tend to have a very obsessive culture, especially Taylor Swift-related, so I’m curious if the crowd will be more toned-down.”

Will tour tourism endure after Eras?

It remains to be seen if the music tourism trend has legs as long and strong as Swift’s and BeyoncĂ©’s, and if it will carry over to Billie Eilish, Usher and other artists with world tours scheduled next year. Expedia’s Fish thinks other big-name artists in Europe this summer will prove that booking a foreign trip around a concert is catching on.

Kat Morga, a travel consultant based in Nashville, isn’t so sure. Morga saw Swift perform in Nashville last year and helped two clients with school-aged children book European family vacations this summer that include seeing Swift in concert. But she thinks the difficulty of navigating ticket purchases through language barriers, currency conversions, international banking regulations and the risk of cancellations will limit the appeal of regular gig getaways.

Taylor Swift fans

“I think this is an anomaly,” Morga said. “People aren’t typically going to build their $20,000 huge family vacation only because Taylor Swift is there. She’s the one-off. She’s special.”

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, whose company operates Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak and OpenTable, is even less enthusiastic about concert tours as a tourism instigator. The Swift Effect causes a “little blip” when the superstar goes to smaller destinations, but for the worldwide travel industry, “one star touring around does not make a difference,” he said.

“It may just shift it a little bit. A person was going to go to the Caribbean for a week vacation. Instead that person (says), ‘Let’s travel to the Taylor Swift thing,’” Fogel said. “It doesn’t increase it. It just moves it from here to there.”
