Very comfortable kitchen, great layout and had everything I needed. The surrounding area was so beautiful- you are right by a creek. The sauna was very nice and modern!

Featuring a shared lounge, the 3-star resort has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi. The resort provides an indoor pool and a 24-hour front desk. the place was super clean and beautiful

Quarterdeck Resort features free bikes, outdoor swimming pool , a fitness centre and terrace in Nisswa. Among the various facilities of this property are a bar and ski-to-door access. There is a restaurant serving American cuisine, and free private parking is available. Comfortable bed. Cleanliness of the room. View from the balcony was great!

Black Elk Resort

Located in Hill City, Black Elk Resort features a a Taproom, shared lounge, garden, and free WiFi. Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a children's playground. The rooms include a patio with views of the garden. We had a great time. We had no idea there was so much to see right there. So close to Mt. Rushmore. The room was perfect for the 4 of us and the staff was incredible. So friendly and helpful. We will definitely be going back.

High Point Inn

Situated in Ephraim, 18 km from Cana Island Lighthouse, High Point Inn features accommodation with a fitness centre, free private parking and a shared lounge. Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, the non-smoking resort has a hot tub. Good location, bigger than expected, full kitchen, friendly staff. Patio was a nice size and super clean- normally I’m a little squeamish about hotel patios because of bugs and spider webs, but you could tell they actually clean theirs, not a spider web in sight!

Nestled between North Bay and Lake Michigan, the Gordon Lodge has an outdoor pool and a restaurant. The lodge is located in North Bay in Door County. Free WiFi access is available in this resort . At Gordon Lodge you will find a private beach area, hot tub, a tennis court and a fitness centre. Guests can enjoy an array of activities including hiking and kayaking in the bay. The property offers free parking. The views were awesome! the place is stunningly beautiful!

A week at the lake has been a popular summer tradition for generations of families wanting to escape the heat and chill out on a laidback vacation. Whether you seek the secluded waters of one of Minnesota’s famed 10,000-plus lakes or the pristine beaches of America’s Third Coast, Lake Michigan, these old-school Midwest family resorts will take you back to an era before Snapchat, when being social meant talking to your friends and family, face to face. You might find you never want to leave!

1. The Abbey Resort – Lake Geneva, WI

About 90 minutes north of Chicago, Lake Geneva has been described as the “Newport of the Midwest” for its opulent lakefront mansions. You don’t have to be rich and famous to vacation here, though. Consider a stay at the Abbey Resort , the only lodging directly on the shores of Lake Geneva. The resort is also along the Geneva Lakeshore Path, a delightful 21-mile walkway that encircles the lake, bringing you right up to estates owned by families like the Wrigleys and Rockefellers.

If you’re a fishing enthusiast, you’ll be hooked by the 100 boat slips, as well as the stuffed fish and fowl adorning the walls of this sportsman’s paradise, located a half-hour from where the tackle box king opened his first bait shop.

Not a fisherman? Not to worry. This expansive Midwest family resort, dedicated to the great outdoors, features plenty of lake and land activities, from water skiing and kayaking, to horseback riding and hiking. When you’re ready to rest, consider a visit to the world-class spa, or just relax in your luxurious log cabin or hotel room at one of the resort’s three lodges.

Guests here not only get to enjoy the great outdoors, but also get to take pleasure in several great indoor activities. Ten miles away, in Branson (the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World”), it’s always show time. There are more than 50 live performance theaters offering everything from Osmond Family reunion performances to a long lineup of comedians and country musicians. It’s a family-friendly version of Vegas, with a patriotic flair.

3. The Homestead – Glen Arbor, MI

Picture this—a mile of postcard-perfect Lake Michigan beachfront, right next to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, with its 35 miles of pristine coastline, secluded beaches and scenic overlooks. That’s what you’ll find at Northern Michigan’s  Homestead Resort . In addition to jaw-dropping scenery, there are pools, tennis, golf, wind surfing, kayaking, a spa and even a kids’ club so adults can have time alone. You won’t run out of dining options at this Midwest family resort either; there are four restaurants on the property.

When your kids grow tired of running down the 400-foot sand dunes, consider visiting the neighboring town of Traverse City. Known as the Cherry Capital of the U.S., Traverse City’s biggest event is the National Cherry Festival, held in early July. It’s jam-packed with wholesome fun (think pie-eating and cherry-spitting contests). Traverse City has a juicy secret, though: it may be charming and quaint, but it’s also a foodie paradise, with a reputation for its wineries and microbreweries.

4. Oak Cove Resort – Lawrence, MI

Looking for casual comfort? That’s what you’ll find at  Oak Cove Resort , a laidback lake getaway in Southwest Michigan, two hours east of Chicago. Here, they proudly keep it old school. You’ll find a pinball machine, arcade games, jukebox and no TVs in the rooms. Although the owners have held on to their anti-TV policy, they have given in to providing complimentary Wi-Fi. There’s plenty to keep you and your kids away from the computer, though, including a heated pool, canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and bikes. She celebrates the seasonal bounty by changing the menu weekly, using ingredients from nearby farms. Homemade jams and pies, made with local fruits, are a highlight. Oak Cove Resort can accommodate up to 80 guests on its property, as well as an offsite, 19th century nine-room farmhouse and coach house.

5. White Birch Lodge – Elk Rapids, MI

Looking for non-stop action? This Northern Michigan family resort along Elk Lake has every conceivable water sport, from the excitement of tubing or sailing to more peaceful paddleboarding and kayaking. You and your children can sign up for daily water skiing or wakeboarding lessons. When you tire of the roaring engines, you can rest easy to the rhythm of the lake while reclining in your beach chair at this Midwest family resort.

There’s a tiered lodging system, so you can get something simple or more extravagant, depending on your family’s size and preference. Units on the 40-acre property range from rustic cabins to multi-bedroom modern condos. The resort is all-inclusive, with guests’ meals served in the lodge’s dining hall or on the beachfront deck.

It’s always playtime at  White Birch Lodge . The college-age staff organizes several hours of supervised complimentary activities for kids every day, from scavenger hunts to arts and crafts. The staff also organizes games of volleyball, basketball and soccer, and there’s shuffleboard, tennis and horseshoes for all guests to enjoy. When the staff isn’t helping guests, they’re practicing for a beloved White Birch tradition—the weekly staff water ski variety show. The showstopper is the five-person, two-tier pyramid on skis. Triangle X Ranch: Moose, Wyoming

This all-inclusive dude ranch is located within Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, meaning there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. Recent guests highly recommend booking the guided float trip, which takes visitors on a large raft down the Snake River to soak in the surrounding scenery. Many say the guides are incredibly knowledgeable and make the atmosphere fun for all ages. Check into history: These classic buildings avoided the wrecking ball, turned into hotels

As a bona fide architecture and design nerd with a master’s in historic preservation, Emily Hines was in heaven when she walked into The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wisconsin. What was once a boarding house for international workers in the early 1900s is now a five-star hotel. “I’m a big advocate for repurposing old buildings from a sustainability point of view and as a way to interpret and remember the history of places,” she says. “It’s a great way to honor craftsmanship and creativity that is sometimes lost in modern buildings.”

James Dannecker, general manager of the Detroit Foundation Hotel, agrees.

“Repurposing old spaces brings growth and new experiences to the buildings and their surrounding areas. It’s always important to celebrate history and incorporate it into the new chapter of the building.”

Restoring classic buildings to their original charm while transforming them into places you can rest your head at night just makes sense. And the Midwest is home to an array of repurposed hotels that you’ll likely be wowed by.

Publishing House B&B

This building has had many lives. In 1909 it was the Free Methodist Publishing House. In the late ’20s and ’30s, it was a casket manufacturer and showroom. After that, it transformed into the Museum of Holography. Nowadays, it’s a bed-and-breakfast hotel in an urban setting – the West Loop. It has original maple floors and steel beams with a mix of vintage and midcentury design. Plus plants – more than 100, in fact.

“Being a traditional B&B in theory but in a nontraditional space really opens the ideas on what a bed and breakfast can really be,” Kimberly Lowery, innkeeper at Publishing House B&B , says. “Repurposing architecture is challenging, but it is important to adapt these existing structures to preserve the history of a neighborhood and the story of a city."

Detroit Foundation Hotel

From locally crafted headboards made of repurposed automobile hoods to custom wallpaper collages, the creators of the Detroit Foundation Hotel have carefully thought out every detail. Built in 1929, the structure was originally two buildings – one housing a fire station, the other a wine cellar. The 100-room hotel boasts the original facades of both buildings, decorative terra cotta panels and the original red firehouse doors.

“The property is designed to bring together the local community and world travelers with different spaces for socializing and creating, such as our Podcast Studio, all while showcasing our city’s legacy and incorporating thoughtful touches from Detroit businesses and artisans,” Dannecker says.

Hotel Indigo

Madison Downtown

Madison, Wisconsin

The Mautz Building, home to the historic Mautz Paint Co. in the late 1900s, sat vacant for nearly two decades before IHG breathed new life into the space as an Indigo-brand hotel . Anyone with an eye for design will appreciate the nods to the original paint factory – for example, the abstract paint-spattered wall, bright carpets and paint dripping from the mirrors in each room.

“In a rapidly evolving city and neighborhood, this building is significant to the historic structure and a key to understanding the historical context of Madison’s blue-collar east side,” motel manager Zach Gray says.

Fitger’s Inn

Duluth, Minnesota

Located literally on the shore of Lake Superior, this hotel, built in the 1880s and listed on the  National Register of Historic Places , was once a brewery. Its smokestack and water tower are landmarks. Inside, find exposed brick, 62 individually styled rooms and lake views. With three restaurants, a salon and day spa and two nightclubs, there’s plenty to keep you busy. When you’re ready to venture out, stroll down the boardwalk and get to know the lakefront. Bonus: The inn is part of a shopping complex, which is home to the renovated Fitger’s Brewery.

Chicago Athletic Association Hotel

Architecture buffs will geek out on the Venetian gothic design of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel , inspired by the Doge’s Palace in Venice. You’ll immediately embrace yesterday starting at the entrance. The canopy on Michigan Avenue is based on original 1890 drawings by architect Henry Ives Cobb. Inside, grab coffee or tea in what used to be the cigar area and enjoy a burger in what was once the men’s Turkish baths.

Throughout the hotel, the original hand-laid tile is a work of art. Pop up to the second floor for drinks at Milk Room, once a speakeasy during Prohibition. Rooms have antique-style furnishing, and the boxer-style robes are a nod to the former sports club. Come evening, take the elevator to the top floor and dine at Cindy’s, inspired by the glass houses at the Gran Palais’ botanical gardens. Most of the original architectural details were carefully preserved as the building was retrofitted for modern use .

Bottleworks Hotel

Bottleworks Hotel transports guests back to a time when jazz and Art Deco were all the rage. In its heyday in the 1930s it was a factory that produced more than  2 million bottles of Coca-Cola a week. Today it’s a luxe boutique hotel with its original exterior and shiny terrazzo floors. The redevelopment of the iconic building is a key reason the east end of Massachusetts Avenue is thriving once again, which means you are within walking distance of many cool points of interest. There are plenty of fun things to do in Cleveland, and my number one don’t miss attraction is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . With frequently changing exhibits, every visit is a new experience—and the sound system is spectacular. Another favorite is the West Side Market where, since 1912, vendors have sold all sorts of food-related goods under a towering arched tile ceiling. The largest performing arts center outside New York City is in... Cleveland! Five painstakingly restored 1920s-era theaters comprise Playhouse Square where a massive outdoor chandelier lights the night. You could spend the whole day at University Circle, home to more than 10 museums and galleries. Highlights include the 100-plus-year-old Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the free Cleveland Museum of Art . Sports fans are in for a treat—Cleveland is home to major league baseball ( Cleveland Guardians ), football ( Cleveland Browns ) and basketball ( Cleveland Cavaliers ), and each of the three downtown stadiums is within walking distance from the other—super convenient when sports seasons overlap.

Best Restaurants 

Cleveland’s food scene is closely aligned with its immigrant heritage, informing much of the cuisine and motivating local chefs to pay homage to their ancestors. Making good on that legacy is buzzy eatery Cordelia (which opened in 2022) where chef Vinnie Cimino’s bold flavors and clever take on Sunday dinner at grandma’s house earned him a James Beard Award finalist nomination for Best Chef Great Lakes in 2024. Right next door is Cleveland native and celebrity chef Michael Symon’s Mabel’s BBQ , a smokey ode to the city’s eastern European heritage—Exhibit A: barbecued kielbasa. Ohio’s first craft brewery, Great Lakes Brewing Co. , is still one of its best; the impeccable beers pair well with locally sourced pub fare (try the brats and pierogies with a Dortmunder Gold lager) in the historic Ohio City neighborhood. Just east of that in the city's Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood is The Judith , a new-in-2023 French cafe that's a favorite of Midwest Living's Senior Travel Editor. "The comfy-chic atmosphere makes you want to stay all day," says Julia Sayers Gokhale. "If you linger until lunch, order the warm Preserved-Lemon and Carrot Salad with lentils and pistachio dukkah—it's divine." For a treat, Presti’s Bakery and Cafe in Little Italy has been serving Old World family recipe cream puffs, tiramisu and cannoli for 116 sweetly delicious years.  

Best Shopping 

For the most part, shopping in Cleveland has moved just outside downtown, although the 5th Street Arcades is worth a stop if only to admire the ornate 1890s architecture. For unique wares and indie stores, head into one of the neighborhoods near downtown. Larchmere Blvd . is home to Fiddlehead Gallery and its contemporary artworks, Fine Points for luxury yarns and hand-crafted clothing, and Loganberry Books specializing in new and rare books, a shop Midwest Living Executive Editor Hannah Agran touts for its children’s lit and “nostalgic escape.” In Hingetown, head into Capsoul for hand-crafted luggage, check out local artists’ work at City Goods and update your beachwear at Shore Society .  The Van Aken District in Shaker Heights is an upscale shopping haven promoting small businesses like Double Rainbow for kids’ clothes; Ladder , an outlet for independent women’s clothing designers; and trendy houseplant purveyor Stump .

Best Nightlife 

Nightlife options in Cleveland are overwhelming, so my suggestion: Hit one of these two areas for a something-for-everyone experience. The downtown East 4th Street Entertainment District is a pedestrian-only promenade where you can sip a classy cocktail at the luxe Society Lounge , grab an alchemy-inspired craft beer at Butcher & the Brewer , get rolling with some bowling at The Corner Alley or catch a comedy show before or after hitting the lounge for conversation and cocktails at Pickwick & Frolic/Hilarities . To experience a little of Cleveland’s rough-and-tumble history, head downhill to the Flats. The low-lying land flanking both sides of the Cuyahoga River has veered between boom and bust for over a century. Currently in a boom phase, Flats East Bank (adjacent to downtown) is known for its bar scene—check out Collision Bend Brewing Company or Good Night John Boy . Flats West Bank, while not directly downhill from downtown, still has plenty of variety with venues like the Music Box Supper Club , where national acts perform intimate concerts, and Shooters on the Water for cocktails and live local music. And to get from one side of the Flats to the other, just hop on a water taxi! 

Best Outdoor Recreation 

Cleveland’s setting along Lake Erie makes it a water-lover’s dream. Edgewater Beach has all the trappings you’d expect at the ocean: 2,400 feet of sandy beach, volleyball, cabana rentals, ice cream stands and beautiful downtown (and sunset) views. Rent a jet ski, kayak, or speed or pontoon boat from Great Lakes Watersports ; their Flats West Bank location offers easy access onto the Cuyahoga River for a unique downtown perspective. Land-lubbers, you’re in for a treat, too. A short drive south (about 30 minutes) takes you to Cuyahoga Valley National Park , home to picturesque forests and waterfalls. Hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing and fishing are just some of the activities available. And for the avid cyclist, the Ohio to Erie Trail connects the Cleveland lakeshore all the way to the bank of the Ohio River.

Best Hotels & Resorts 

After ten years and a $90 million renovation, Hotel Cleveland , part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, reopened its doors onto Public Square in June 2024, inviting guests into the splashy panache of its historic 1918 grandeur. The Schofield Hotel sports a clean, industrial-style design in a 1902 office building while promoting wellness with a yoga mat in every room and custom bikes for a downtown spin. (It’s where I stay when I’m catching a show in Playhouse Square.) A night at The Hyatt Regency Cleveland comes with on-site access to The Arcade , a dramatic 1890 Victorian-style structure that offers practicality with its elegance—I’ve found it’s a great short-cut between Superior and Euclid Avenues, and a quick stroll over to the bustling East 4th Street Entertainment District. An intimate and luxurious stay awaits at The Glidden House , a 1910 French Gothic mansion in University Circle close to museums, restaurants and the Cleveland Botanical Garden .  

Best Neighborhood, According to a Local  

Reflecting their immigrant history through food and art, Cleveland’s neighborhoods, like Little Italy and Tremont, are well worth a visit. But it’s the Hingetown neighborhood, a small enclave in Ohio City, that’s bringing the buzz. Young entrepreneurs like Molly Cheraso appreciate the welcoming atmosphere for “ahead-of-the-curve ideas” bringing new energy to the area. Cheraso, herself the proprietor of Verbena Free Spirited Shoppe, Cafe & Dry Bar , notes there’s “no shortage of good eats." Her don't-miss spots? Amba , an homage to Indian food in a dark, dramatic setting; Larder , the James Beard nominated deli ; and Patron Saint for Italian inspired cafe fare. For more Hingetown hangouts, take in Lake Erie views from the second floor studio of Soul Yoga or post up at Rising Star with fresh roasted coffee and locally baked pastries and vegan bites.

What to Know 

Best time to visit .

Your best bet for mild weather is between April and October, although life on a lake means a sudden rain storm can never be ruled out. Outdoor pursuits like hitting the beach, kayaking the Cuyahoga River or just wandering Cleveland’s historic downtown are best during the prime summer months. The wind and snow whipping in from Lake Erie can drop the temperature quickly, making winter a chilly time for a Cleveland visit. But if that’s your thing... there’s tobogganing and snowshoeing at the Cleveland Metroparks and ice skating on Public Square.

Mark Your Calendar 

As you might expect from a city that bills itself as the rock ‘n’ roll capital of the world, music dominates the calendar in Cleveland where big names can draw big crowds, especially at Jacobs Pavilion in the Flats West Bank, the outdoor Rock Hall Live at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the national headliner tours held at Browns stadium. And the music doesn’t hibernate once summer fades. Case in point: the Brite Winter Music Festival held annually outdoors in February. Home games of the Guardians, Cavs and Browns can send hotel and parking costs into budget buster territory. A quick calendar check before you book your Cleveland trip will help gauge rates and availability. 

How to Get There and How to Get Around 

Whether you drive or fly, Cleveland is an easy city to get to and maneuver about. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, home to nine airlines, is convenient to downtown—about a 12 mile drive or a quick ride on the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Redline that leaves the airport every 15 minutes for Tower City Center at a cost of $2.50/person. Be aware though, if you're renting a car, it can take about 15 minutes to get to/from the car rental center by shuttle, so make sure to factor that into arrival and departure times.

When I drive to Cleveland, I park at my hotel and hit the sidewalks. The city is easily walkable and it’s the best way to appreciate the architecture, public art and lake views. There’s also a free RTA trolley bus that traverses downtown on weekdays, and taxis and rideshares are readily available as well.

Marriott International Announces Record Year of Global Signings and Strong Net Rooms Growth

Net rooms grew 4.7% to over 1.597 million; company development pipeline ended 2023 at a record 573,000 rooms, an increase of 15 percent from the previous year.

At the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS), Marriott International, Inc. (Nasdaq: MAR) announced the company’s record year of global signings with 52 percent more organic rooms signed in 2023 than in 2022, as it continues to expand offerings for owners, franchisees, and guests. The company also announced that it achieved strong net rooms growth of 4.7 percent in 2023.

During 2023, the company signed a record number of organic management and franchise agreements—an average of nearly 2.5 deals a day—representing approximately 164,000 rooms globally.

In the United States & Canada, Marriott’s largest region, the company signed a record 91,000 rooms, 37,000 of which were the result of the company’s strategic licensing agreement with MGM Resorts International. The company also saw robust signings growth outside of the U.S. & Canada with a record of nearly 73,000 organic rooms signed across 74 countries and territories, with particularly strong signings in China, Vietnam, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and India. At year-end 2023, Marriott’s global development pipeline totaled nearly 3,400 hotels and roughly 573,000 rooms, an increase of over 15 percent over a year ago.

At the end of 2023, Marriott’s industry-leading worldwide system consisted of nearly 8,800 properties and more than 1,597,000 rooms in 139 countries and territories. Marriott added over 400 properties and nearly 64,000 organic gross rooms in 2023. The company also completed its acquisition of the City Express brand portfolio, bringing an additional 150 properties and approximately 17,500 rooms into Marriott’s system during the year.

As Marriott continues to expand its offerings, the company notably increased the breadth of its portfolio, providing more opportunities for owners, franchisees, and guests. Marriott expanded its lead in luxury, announced its entry into the affordable midscale segment globally, increased its portfolio of branded residences, announced the planned launch of the MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, and continued to grow its share in the all-inclusive segment.

Growing Marriott’s Global Leadership in Luxury With 623 open properties spanning 70 countries and territories, Marriott’s luxury portfolio remains unmatched. In 2023, the company signed a record 58 deals for luxury hotels and resorts, bringing Marriott’s luxury portfolio in the global development pipeline to 245 hotels, including more than 20 hotels expected to open in 2024.

This past year also reflected W Hotels’ ambitious new chapter, as it continued its brand refresh and global expansion into new destinations, including the debut of W Budapest, the brand’s first hotel in Hungary, and W Edinburgh, the second W hotel in the United Kingdom.

Other highlights from the year include the opening of Rissai Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, marking the company’s 500 th hotel in Greater China. The Ritz-Carlton brand debuted in the U.S. Pacific Northwest with The Ritz-Carlton Portland, the St. Regis brand debuted in the U.S. Midwest with The St. Regis Chicago, and three luxury hotels were signed in Vietnam (JW Marriott Trang An Resort & Spa, The Luxury Collection Resort, Hon Thom Island, and The Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Hon Thom Island).

Offering New Possibilities for Guests and Owners in Affordable Midscale Marriott entered the high-growth affordable midscale segment in 2023 with the acquisition of the City Express brand portfolio in the Company’s Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) region. With approximately 17,500 rooms across Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Chile, the deal increased Marriott’s footprint in the CALA region by approximately 45 percent. In 2024, the City Express by Marriott brand is expected to expand to additional countries across CALA.

Marriott is continuing its expansion in the affordable midscale segment with the announcement of StudioRes, a brand aimed at providing reasonably priced, modern comfort for guests seeking longer stay accommodations in the U.S. & Canada. On January 17, 2024, Marriott celebrated the first groundbreaking for the brand in Fort Myers, Florida, with approximately 300 other potential deals under discussion in 150 markets.

In September 2023, Marriott announced the launch of Four Points Express by Sheraton, a conversion-focused midscale brand designed in response to growing consumer demand for reliable and affordable accommodations in Marriott’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Through year end 2023, the company signed six Four Points Express by Sheraton deals in the United Kingdom and Turkey.

Accelerating Momentum in Conversions and All-Inclusive Conversions once again helped drive growth, with 25 percent of Marriott’s room openings coming from conversions. In 2023, the company signed a record 184 conversion properties, representing nearly 65,000 rooms, including MGM. Marriott’s collection brands including Autograph Collection Hotels, The Luxury Collection, and Tribute Portfolio, represented 29 percent of global conversion rooms signed. Conversions to our collection brands offer a unique value proposition for owners and franchisees as they leverage well-established brands, an award-winning loyalty program, competitive affiliation costs, and the company’s powerful revenue generation engines.

Meeting rising consumer demand for stress-free and multi-generational travel, Marriott also grew its all-inclusive resort portfolio, providing not only new opportunities for travelers, but also for owners interested in entering this growing segment. Marriott continues to see global interest in all-inclusive, signing three deals in its EMEA region in 2023, bringing its portfolio to 49 open and pipeline properties located across 12 markets and 10 brands, with another six anticipated openings in 2024.

Strengthening Branded Residences Portfolio In 2023, customer demand fueled Marriott’s expansion of its branded residences portfolio to exciting and growing markets around the world. With 134 open locations and 115 pipeline residential projects across 49 countries and territories and 16 brands, Marriott International is the industry leader in the branded residential segment. In the past five years, the company has added 48 residential locations across 14 brands and continues to see growth in the segment. Recent highlights include the openings of The St. Regis Residences, Cairo, Egypt, The Residences at Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort, Philippines, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Portland, and The Ritz-Carlton Residences Mexico City.

Growing Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy Launched in 2022, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy provides developers a unique option to convert an existing residential building, pursue a new build, or integrate as part of a mixed-use property, with a dedicated welcome lounge, outdoor space, and other amenities. The company opened the first Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy property in Casa Costera, Isla Verde Beach, San Juan, Puerto Rico, in December 2023 and expects to continue growing its global presence, with additional signed agreements in the United States, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.

Launching MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy In July 2023, Marriott announced the signing of an exclusive long-term strategic licensing agreement with MGM Resorts International and the creation of the MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, which is expected to launch in early 2024. The agreement encompasses 17 of MGM’s unrivaled resorts, representing more than 40,000 rooms in Las Vegas and other cities across the U.S.

The deal is expected to increase Marriott’s global rooms distribution by 2.3 percent and position the company to provide even more options for group travel needs, while offering incredible entertainment, sports, and culinary experiences through Marriott Bonvoy Moments.

These Midwestern communities offer affordable housing, top-notch recreation, and economic prosperity.

The Midwest, with its varied landscapes spanning rolling vineyards, mountains, and lakes dotted with charming small towns, has always been a popular vacation destination for generations of Americans.

However, the region has also become a trendy option for new residents seeking affordable living (and housing), open spaces, good education, and economic opportunities. While traditionally the region has been known for its agricultural heritage and blue-collar industries, it is also attracting many high-tech companies , transforming its economy and boosting employment opportunities for Midwesterners.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau , the region, which encompasses 12 states, is experiencing population growth, especially in big cities, as many Midwestern communities have topped lists for the best places to live in the country .

Below, we rounded up the best places to live in the Midwest, according to local real estate experts.

Green Bay, Wisconsin

Rated the best place to live in America in 2023 by U.S. News, Green Bay certainly has plenty to offer its current and future residents. Nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan's Green Bay in northeast Wisconsin, the city's main draws are its thriving economy — boasting a 3.1 percent unemployment rate in March — and cost of living , seven percent lower than the state's average and eight percent below the national average. And while housing prices have been on the rise, the median home value is over $130,000 lower than the national median .

"Green Bay and its surroundings offer a diverse range of neighborhoods, each with its unique appeal," Joy Pouwels, the local sales director at Shorewest at Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , told Travel + Leisure. "Astor Park boasts historic homes and modern conveniences, while Howard and Ledgeview provide spacious living and suburban tranquility yet offer urban convenience. Allouez offers scenic views and charmer homes, while De Pere exudes small-town charm with top-rated schools."

Cincinnati, Ohio

"The city of Cincinnati has enough size to be a big 'smaller' city," Scott Nelson, CEO of Comey & Shepherd Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , said of the third-largest city in Ohio, known for its bustling culinary scene and parks (about 10 percent of Cincinnati is covered in green spaces). The city was named one of the best places to live in Ohio for its excellent school system, family-friendly recreational activities and facilities, affordability, and rich culture.

"Many older neighborhoods and homes reflect the city's German heritage," Nelson explained. "There is a great deal of traditional housing stock — Tudor, colonial, and Queen Anne — with an increase of modern-style architecture that, 30-40 years ago, didn't seem to be as popular in this area."

The median home value in Cincinnati is $240,000.

St. Louis, Missouri

According to Janet Horlacher, owner and principal broker at Janet McAfee Real Estate , affordability and an excellent school system make St. Louis one of the best places to relocate to in the Midwest. The city recently topped Zillow's ranking of the best markets for first-time buyers , where the median home value is about $177,000.

Together with its scenic riverfront location, St. Louis also has many cultural institutions, recreational areas, and parks (Forest Park was named the best in the country in 2023 ).

Chicago, Illinois

"I grew up in Chicago and am thankful every day for the experiences I've had that most would have to travel to see or do," Jim Abbott, a broker associate at Baird & Warner/Luxury Portfolio International , shared. "Besides the many museums, sports teams, types of theater, and parks, our food scene is eclectic, and we have so many different neighborhoods and so much diversity." Chicago is also a major economic hub in the Midwest, which, thanks to its diversified economy , attracts professionals from all industries.

The current median home value in the Windy City is $296,901, and Abbott explained that, because of remote work, there is a lot of value in the downtown market.

"By contrast, sales on the north side of Chicago have gone through the roof as more people have moved to those neighborhoods than ever before. The demand for outdoor and green space has been significant, which is more typical of north-side homes than downtown," he added.

Carmel, Indiana

This town in Hamilton County, Indiana might not be a household name like Chicago or Indianapolis (which is just a 30-minute drive away), but it was recently named the best place to live in America by Livability.com based on its top-notch schools and overall quality of life.

Its vibrant cultural scene is not too far behind, offering many performance venues and arts festivals. And while the town does have a reputation for being upscale, Angel Dean, a broker with F.C. Tucker Company , said that it also offers "a range of housing options to suit different budgets."

"Neighborhoods fantastic for families include Autumn Lake, Claybourne, Foster Estates, Springmill Crossing, and Smokey Ridge. The Carmel Arts & Design District has condos of all price levels. There is truly something for every buyer," she added.

Carmel's median home value currently stands at $533,447, according to Zillow .

Naperville, Illinois

Naperville, a mid-sized city on the banks of the DuPage River west of Chicago, has been making the news thanks to its excellent public school system, healthcare facilities, and family-friendly amenities, drawing many new residents.

"Downtown Naperville has become a go-to destination for fine dining, shopping, and nightlife. Another key attribute that attracts a lot of homebuyers is the neighborhood diversity. With over 200 neighborhoods to choose from, there is literally a home for every type," Scott Parker, a sales manager at John Greene Realtor/Luxury Portfolio International , said.

The median home value is $565,587, and Greene explained that inventory levels in town are currently pretty low.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

"Minneapolis is ripe for opportunity, acting as a home to several universities and colleges and 15 Fortune 500 companies," Sharry Schmid, the president of Edina Realty/Luxury Portfolio International , said, noting the city's low unemployment rate and reputation as an innovation and technological hub.

Culture enthusiasts will feel right at home here, thanks to the abundance of museums, concert venues, and theaters. The city is also home to many farmers markets, events, and festivals that are free of charge. Together with neighboring St. Paul, the Twin Cities also offer world-class sports and entertainment facilities.

Schmid explained that the biggest challenge to newcomers is finding a home to purchase — the city has suffered from a lack of inventory, but she also added that there's hope as, in the past few months, the market has slowly but steadily improved "as current homeowners decide to move up or downsize and new construction grows."

Ann Arbor, Michigan

"Ann Arbor has it all! Home to the University of Michigan and The Big House, Ann Arbor provides the perfect college-town experience for everyone – not just for college students," Megan Mazurek, an agent at Reinhart Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , said. Regardless of your age, the city promises a great experience and value as it ranks in the top 15 cities both to live and retire in America by U.S. News. College life aside, many things make Ann Arbor a great place to relocate — including over 160 parks, a top-notch culinary scene, and friendly neighborhoods that boast an eclectic mix of architectural styles.

"We have everything from ranches (single-story), colonials (traditional two-stories), mid-century moderns, bungalows, Victorians, and contemporary houses. In addition, condos, lofts, and townhouses are scattered across the city, and many new construction housing projects are currently under development," Mazurek explained. Currently, median home values hover around the $500,000 mark .

Columbus, Ohio

Columbus's affordable cost of living and ample employment opportunities have made it one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation . But that doesn't mean the city lacks entertainment or recreational opportunities. Food & Wine highlighted it as a great baking destination , while its museums and art galleries attract millions of visitors each year .

Columbus's real estate market also stands out with its affordability — the current median home value is $247,805, ranked 36th for first-time homeowners .

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

In just 16 years, Cedar Rapids has made an incredible recovery from the city's most devastating flood, which submerged 14 percent of it under water. Since then, its population has grown, and so have the opportunities for employment and investment. Most recently, Google unveiled a $576 million project in the city.

Livability.com also named it one of the best cities based on its "affordability, inclusivity, [and] innovation." Cedar Rapids scored high in the housing, transportation, and health categories. Currently, home prices are a little over $190,000, according to Zillow .
