Iguazu Falls Travel Guide For Argentina & Brazil (+Map)

Iguazu Falls is one of the world’s most spectacular and impressive waterfalls, straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil in South America.

With more than 275 individual cascades, Iguazu is actually the biggest waterfall system in the world! The closest comparison is probably Niagara Falls in Canada and the United States, although Iguazu Falls is bigger than Niagara by most measurements.

This spectacular waterfall has been made into a national park in Argentina and Brazil, and both sides of the falls are well worth a visit since they offer different views! You can see the best highlights of Iguazu in a couple of days, although you could easily spend longer.

This travel guide will explain how to get to Iguazu Falls on the Argentina or Brazil side (with or without a tour), plus a map of the falls and more info. Lastly, I’ll share some interesting facts about the waterfall itself!

Where Is Iguazu Falls?

Iguazu Falls is located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, in the continent of South America.

There are towns and airports on both sides of the border, with plenty of tourist friendly hotels and restaurants, and you can easily go back and forth between the two countries to see both sides of the waterfall.

The town on the Argentine side of the falls is called Puerto Iguazu , while the Brazil side is called Foz do Iguacu .

How To Get To Iguazu Falls Argentina & Brazil

The main way to get to Iguazu Falls is by flying there from one of the big cities in Argentina or Brazil.

For the Argentina side, you can fly from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu (airport code: IGR), which takes less than 2 hours and is offered by multiple airlines, with pretty reasonable prices. There are two airports in Buenos Aires (AEP or EZE) and you can use either of them to fly here.

If you’re in Brazil, you can fly from Sao Paulo or Rio De Janeiro to Foz do Iguacu (code: IGU), which takes about 2 hours, more or less. These routes are also offered by multiple airlines with daily departures.

A busy day at Iguazu Falls

Once you arrive in the town of Puerto Iguazu, you can get to the Argentina waterfall by bus, taxi, or tour . The bus is cheap, safe, and easy to use, with regular departures from the bus terminal in town to the waterfall, and back.

However, if you want something more personalized and convenient, then a taxi or private tour can be a good option. You can ask the driver to wait for you while you explore the waterfall, and then take you back to town afterwards.

The Brazil side of Iguazu Falls works much the same way. You can get to the Brazil waterfall by bus, taxi, or tour , and all of these options work well depending on your needs and how much time you have in your itinerary.

It’s also easy to cross the international border between Argentina and Brazil, and go back and forth by bus, taxi, or tour , seeing both sides of the Iguazu waterfall.

For example, I based myself on the Argentina side of Iguazu Falls, but I did a day trip to the Brazil side using the bus, and I also did a separate day trip to the Paraguay side with a taxi.

As a US citizen, I didn’t need any visa for Argentina, Brazil, or Paraguay, so it was very easy to do day trips between them, but remember to check the current visa requirements for your nationality in these countries to avoid any border hassles, and don’t forget to bring your passport!

Best Iguazu Falls Tours

One of the easiest ways to visit Iguazu Falls is with a day tour from Puerto Iguazu or Foz do Iguacu.

GetYourGuide has high-rated day tours to see Iguazu Falls on the Argentina side , with optional boat tours where you can see the waterfalls up close and get soaked. This can be a fun way to see the beauty of Iguazu Falls from a different angle.

On the Brazil side, they have day tours to Iguazu Falls from Foz do Iguacu , with similar boat tours and an optional visit to the bird park. Just like on the Argentina side, these tours include a trilingual tour guide and hotel pickup and drop-off.

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Other Iguazu Falls Tours

GetYourGuide also has some convenient day tours that cross the border to see Argentina or Brazil from the other side. This can be a handy solution if you’re planning to see both sides of Iguazu Falls.

In other words, they have a tour that goes to the Argentina side of the falls starting from Brazil, or a tour to the Brazilian side starting from Argentina. Both of these are great.

If you’re short on time, they even have package tours from Buenos Aires or Rio De Janeiro that include flights, a private driver and tour guide, and your national park entrance tickets.

Iguazu Falls Argentina Side: What To Expect

Visiting Iguazu Falls is an amazing experience! The pictures don’t really do it justice at all.

The Argentina side of Iguazu Falls is bigger and more spread out than the Brazil side, so it’s divided into circuits that go to different parts of the waterfall. The very best things to see are the upper circuit, lower circuit, and Devil’s Throat viewpoint.

The park is well connected by walking trails and a free mini train system, so it’s pretty easy to get around. You can choose to walk the entire park, explore it by train, or use a combination of the two transport methods. There are also benches and cafes where you can stop and rest along the way.

If you’re in decent shape, I would recommend walking the upper and lower circuits in the morning without the train, and then using the train to go to the Devil’s Throat viewpoint in the afternoon. This will give you a good workout, but it’s not too much for a day.

As you explore the national park, you can see all kinds of wildlife like monkeys, coatis, crocodiles, turtles, and lizards, plus various kinds of birds, spiders, and butterflies. If you’re lucky you might even see a tapir.

The upper and lower circuits at Iguazu both have some amazing panoramic views of the waterfall to enjoy, but in my opinion the very best thing to see in Argentina is the Devil’s Throat viewpoint (in Spanish: ‘Garganta Del Diablo’).

At the appropriately named Devil’s Throat, you can stand and gaze directly into the center of Iguazu Falls, which has a massive U-shaped curtain of water with a tremendous roaring sound and a cloud of mist.

I’d say this viewpoint is the single most impressive feature on either side of Iguazu Falls!

• Entrance Fee (Argentina)

Iguazu Falls is a national park in Argentina, so there’s a fee you have to pay to enter the park. This applies whether you’re visiting the walkways or doing other activities like a boat cruise, although some day tours may include the park fee in their price.

You can find the current entrance fee on the Argentina national parks website . However, if you visit two days in a row then the second day price is marked down by 50 percent, so just remember to keep your ticket so you can show them and get a discount.

You can pay for your park tickets with a credit or debit card, or with the local currency (Argentine Pesos). They also accept Brazilian Reals, US Dollars, or Paraguayan Guarani. I paid with a foreign credit card and that was fine.

You can book your park tickets in advance, but there’s really no need, because they’re unlimited and never sell out. Lines are always quick at the ticket counter, and I got my tickets in less than a minute. The only thing you might want to book in advance is the boat cruise.

Iguazu Falls Brazil Side: What To Expect

The Brazil side of Iguazu Falls is a bit smaller and more simple than the Argentina side, but there’s still plenty of great things to see and do.

The park has one main pathway that follows the side of the river, ending with a thrilling balcony near the edge of the falls, and then several platforms that let you see the waterfall from above, either by going up stairs or taking an elevator.

The Brazil park is set up in a loop arrangement with a free bus service that takes you from the entrance gate to either end of the park, and back. Overall, it’s shorter and easier to visit than the Argentina side.

One of my favorite views on the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls

I loved the Brazil side of Iguazu Falls, and even though it’s not quite as impressive as the ‘Devil’s Throat’ viewpoint in Argentina, I still think it’s more photogenic than the Argentina side in many ways. It would be a big mistake to skip this side of Iguazu just because it’s smaller!

When you get done exploring the Brazil side of Iguazu Falls, there’s also a nice bird park you can visit near the entrance to the national park. It has lots of great South American birds, including some colorful macaws and toucans!

The bird park is called ‘ Parque Das Aves ‘ and it’s just a short walk from the waterfall entrance. Don’t miss it! The ticket is separate from Iguazu, and it’s a little pricey, but it’s worth it.

How Much Time To Spend At Iguazu Falls

You need two full days to really see and explore both sides of Iguazu Falls: one day for Argentina, and one day for Brazil. The Brazil side can be done in a half day if you skip the bird park.

A third day at Iguazu will give you more flexibility with weather, and it’ll allow you to re-visit one of the national parks or else do a day trip to Paraguay to see Monday Falls (the Saltos Del Monday waterfall).

If you’re really pressed for time, it’s possible to see both sides of Iguazu Falls in a single day (Argentina and Brazil), although you’ll have to use a tour in order to speed up the border crossings and other logistics.

What To Bring To Iguazu Falls

  • Clothing: The climate at Iguazu is tropical, so it’s hot and humid year round. You’ll want to dress for summer. Shorts and sandals are a good idea.
  • Sunscreen: It can be very hot and sunny here, so you’ll want a hat and sunscreen. This is the only place I got any burn in Argentina.
  • Rain Coat: There can be extreme mist and spray at some areas of the waterfall, such as the Devil’s Throat, so a poncho is helpful to keep you dry.
  • Bug Spray: In general there aren’t many mosquitoes at Iguazu, and I think they’re mostly scared away by the noise and spray of the waterfalls. However, some areas of the park are more calm and you’re likely to run into mosquitoes and other bugs there, so bring bug spray just in case.
  • Vaccines: I got the Yellow Fever vaccine before traveling here, and I think it’s a good idea, especially if you plan to travel to Yellow Fever areas in the future. The vaccine is good for life. According to the US CDC , there is some presence of Yellow Fever in the mosquitoes around Iguazu. The vaccine is recommended, but not required by Argentina or Brazil, so that’s your decision to make. Most people don’t bother with the vaccine, and have a great trip anyways.
  • Camera: Both sides of the waterfall are very photogenic. A lens with a little bit of zoom is best, although for the Devil’s Throat you’ll want a wide angle lens.
  • Passport: If you’re crossing a border, remember to bring your passport. You’ll need it, and it’s easy to forget. Aside from border crossings, however, you won’t need to carry your passport everywhere. For example, if you’re staying in Argentina you won’t need to bring your passport to visit the Argentine side of the falls. It’s not required for entering either of the national parks (just crossing the border), and it would be bad to get your passport wet!

Best Time To Visit Iguazu Falls

There’s really no best time to visit Iguazu Falls. It has a good flow all year long, and it’s always photogenic!

If you want cooler weather, the humidity and temperatures are best from May to August. These are also some of the least rainy months of the year, and the bright sunny days are great for seeing rainbows at the falls.

With that said, I’ve visited Iguazu in the wet season and there really wasn’t too much rain at all. It was mostly sunny every day, with one shower in the evening, and the rain didn’t affect any of my plans.

Naturally, the waterfalls have the strongest and most impressive flow during the rainy season, although sometimes the water can look a bit brown and muddy, which may not be ideal for photos (I’m nitpicking there).

The best time of day to visit Iguazu Falls is in the morning so you can avoid some of the heat and crowds. This is a very popular tourist destination, so it gets pretty crowded by noon. Photography is good at any time of day, though.

Iguazu Falls Argentina vs Brazil: Which Side Is Better?

So which side of Iguazu Falls is better? The Argentina side, or the Brazil side? That’s a tough question, because both sides are amazing.

The main advantage of the Argentina side is that it’s bigger and has more trails and walkways to explore. The Devil’s Throat viewpoint is also arguably the most spectacular thing you can see at Iguazu.

The Brazil side, on the other hand, is more compact but it still has some unique scenery and walkways. I would even argue it’s more photogenic than the Argentina side. Plus there’s a nice bird park near the entrance!

In conclusion, I thought the Argentina side was a bit more impressive to see with my own eyes, but the Brazil side may be better for taking photos. Both sides are very worthwhile, and I would recommend seeing both if you’re able.

Iguazu Falls Paraguay Side: Saltos Del Monday

If you want to see another big and beautiful waterfall near Iguazu Falls, there’s a nice one in neighboring Paraguay called Monday Falls (‘Saltos Del Monday’).

Technically this waterfall is not part of the same river system as Iguazu Falls, and it can’t compare in size or greatness, but it’s located nearby and the cascade is a pretty impressive one in its own right, with a height of more than 45 meters (150 feet).

It’s easy to visit Paraguay and the Monday Falls on a day trip from either the Argentina or Brazil side of Iguazu Falls, and as a bonus, you also get to check off another country (Paraguay) from your bucket list!

Fun Facts About Iguazu Falls

  • How big is it? Iguazu Falls is huge. It’s actually the largest broken waterfall system in the world, with 275 individual cascades. Iguazu has a height of 64 to 82 meters (210 to 269 feet), a width of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet), and a mean annual flow rate of 1,746 cubic meters per second (61,600 cubic feet per second).
  • How does it compare to Niagara Falls in Canada and USA? Iguazu Falls is frequently compared to Niagara Falls in North America, which sits on the border between Canada and the United States. Iguazu is bigger than Niagara in most ways. It’s higher and much wider, although Niagara has a stronger flow rate.
  • How does it compare to Victoria Falls in Zambia and Zimbabwe? Iguazu Falls is also often compared to Victoria Falls, which is a waterfall in Africa on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls is the biggest curtain of water in the world, and it’s also taller than Iguazu. Collectively, Iguazu is wider than Victoria, but it’s split into roughly 275 distinct waterfalls.
  • What is the source? The Iguazu River is the source of the waterfall, and it originates in the Serra do Mar mountains of Brazil. This river is about 1,320 kilometers (820 miles) long.
  • How did it get its name? The name Iguazu comes from indigenous Guarani words meaning ‘great water.’ It’s pronounced ‘ee-wasu’ or ‘ee-wazu’ although many people also pronounce it ‘eeg-wazu’ or ‘ig-wazu.’
  • Is it a national park? Yes, Iguazu is a national park in both Argentina and Brazil. Each side is considered a separate national park. The Argentina side is officially called Parque Nacional Iguazú in Spanish, while the Brazilian side is called Parque Nacional Do Iguaçu in Portuguese.
  • What is the UNESCO status? The Iguazu National Park in Argentina has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, and the Brazil side has also been separately recognized by UNESCO since 1986. This is because of the area’s outstanding natural significance and beauty, as well as the biological diversity.
  • Can you stay inside the national park? Yes, the Argentina national park has the Gran Melia Iguazu , while the Brazil side has the Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas . These hotels are expensive but high rated, and they’re the only options if you want to stay directly inside the national park and be right at the falls.
  • What other facilities are there? Both national parks have lockers for storing luggage, and they also have plenty of bathrooms, cafes, maps, and souvenir shops. The parks have ATMs, but they’re not reliable for drawing cash. Thankfully you can pay for everything in the park with a credit card, and it’s possible to get cash from the banks in town.
  • How hard is it to get to Iguazu Falls? It’s easy to get to either side of Iguazu Falls. You can fly into the town on either side of the river and use it as a base to see both Argentina and Brazil using a bus, taxi, or tour.

  • Credit Cards: Most places in town accept credit cards, but some smaller places may be cash only. Keep some cash just in case.
  • WiFi: The hotels and restaurants in town usually have fast, reliable WiFi. I was able to find great WiFi everywhere I went.

  • Safety: The Iguazu area is safe for tourists, and generally you don’t have to worry about crime in town. Just practice normal precautions. Don’t leave cash in your room, or valuables in your car.

Is Iguazu Falls Worth It?

Yes, Iguazu Falls is absolutely worth it!

Even though it’s not the easiest place to visit in Argentina or Brazil, this waterfall really deserves the detour. It’s one of the biggest and most impressive falls in the world.

If you’re planning to travel through South America, definitely add this place to your bucket list!

Is Iguazu Falls Open / Closed Right Now?

Yes, Iguazu Falls is currently open to tourists in both Argentina and Brazil! Both parks are wide open to international tourists. I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

Some areas of the park may be closed from time to time for maintenance, but this is temporary and they usually reopen quickly. You can also check current updates on the official websites for Iguazu Argentina and Iguazu Brazil .

IGUAZU FALLS - HOW TO GET ACROSS THE BORDER?

Updated: Apr 23, 2023

It's not as straightforward as you might think. Find my tips here and learn from my mistakes

intrepid travel iguazu falls

Brazilian side of the falls

How to get across the border, private transfer, public transport, crossing the border, argentinian side of the falls.

We were staying on the Brazilian side of the falls at Hotel Das Cataratas. Our hotel shuttle took us to the entrance of the national park. From the entrance you can see the bus station which is a short five minute walk away. This is where you will either start your journey over to the Argentinian side of the falls or if you aren't staying inside the national park, this is where you will take the bus to the Brazilian side of the falls.

Tickets on the Brazilian side are £10 per person.

If you are taking the bus to the Brazilian side of the falls you will be dropped off outside of Hotel Das Cataratas. From there you can explore the trail off to the right which takes you to a scenic view point. You can then carry on along the trail to the left and after 25-30 minutes you will reach the Devil's Throat. Whilst walking along the trail you have a view of the falls the whole way. The route is not difficult. It is fairly flat with some stairs to reach some of the viewpoints.

Don't forget your waterproof as you will get soaked! But it is so worth it.

If you would like to have a close-up of the falls, the first stop on your bus route to the falls is Macuco Safari. Here you can join a boat tour which will take you to the foot of the falls for a whole new perspective of this incredible natural wonder.

intrepid travel iguazu falls

You have 3 options:

Take a private transfer from your hotel, over to the border and back again - the easiest but most expensive option.

Take a local taxi over the border and back again - still fairly easy and a more reasonable price.

Take public transport over the border and back again - the cheapest but most time consuming and awkward option

We were quoted 550 Reals (£85) for a private transfer to take us from Hotel Das Cataratas across to the Argentinian side of the falls and back again. This is the easiest and most luxurious option but it comes at a price. If you can afford it and want to avoid any hassle, this is the way to go.

The second option, and what I opted for, is a local taxi from the bus station at the entrance of the national park on the Brazilian side of the falls, across the border to the Argentinian side. Our driver waited for us for around 4 hours whilst we explored the falls and then brought us safely back again. The price for this taxi was 300 Reals (£45). Still fairly pricey for Brazil but definitely more palatable than the private transfer option. Our driver also kindly waited for us for an extremely long time and did not rush us at all which was really appreciated.

I would recommend this option for someone looking for a middle ground. Make sure you confirm the price before you get into the taxi. If you don't speak Portuguese use Google translate to converse with your driver to ensure you're on the same page.

We originally planned to get public transport across the border which is the cheapest option. However, after waiting 15 minutes for a bus which was due to arrive and didn't, we were worried we would waste too much time so hopped in a taxi.

A bus operated by Rio Uruguay runs every 30 minutes and costs around £2 per person. The bus takes 1 hour 20 minutes and takes you to Puerto Iguazu. You will then need to change to get a second bus (again only around £1-£2 per person) to take you to the entrance of the park on the Argentinian side.

This is definitely the cheapest option but it is time consuming. The buses can be unreliable and may not arrive according to the timetable and the biggest negative for the public transport option is crossing the border.

Firstly, remember your passport. This may seem obvious but it's very easy to forget and you won't get far without it.

We crossed the border in June 2022 and had to show our vaccine certificate. If you're travelling from the UK the vaccine confirmation from the NHS App was accepted.

On the Brazilian side your driver will pull up outside some small cabins. You will need to get out of the car and show your passport and vaccine certificate to border control officers. This is where you will be delayed significantly longer if you take public transport as everyone on the bus will have to get out and show their passports (and possibly vaccine certificates) one by one.

On the Argentinian side they have toll-like booths where your driver can drive right up to the window and handover your documentation. Again you will need to show your passport (and possibly vaccine certificate).

Our taxi driver took us to get a sworn statement which I am still unsure what it was really for. No officials asked to see this either on the Brazil or Argentina side. I think it was a Visa style document and it cost 10 Reals each. I don't think we needed this but I think our driver was simply covering his back and for the sake of 10 Reals, I wasn't going to argue.

intrepid travel iguazu falls

Tickets for the Argentinian side of the falls are £26 per person.

You will need around 4-5 hours to explore the Argentinian side of the falls. It is so much bigger than the Brazilian side and you want to ensure you see the falls from every angle possible.

There are a number of trails to explore:

Upper Circuit

Lower Circuit

Devil's Throat

Macuco Trail

Rainforest Ecological Train

Green Trail

I started at the entrance of the park and took the Green Trail. This is a 15 minute walk where you will reach a train crossing. Cross over and you will find the stop for the ecological train to take you to the Devil's Throat.

Take the train to the Devil's Throat stop and walk the trail which will take around 20-25 minutes to reach the falls. The sheer power of the water is truly breathtaking. Spend some time here appreciating the beauty of the falls and getting some amazing photos and videos.

Head back to catch the train and you will find Coatis running around which are part of the Racoon family. They might look cute and cuddly but avoid feeding them as they can get quite aggressive and can scratch and bite.

intrepid travel iguazu falls

The train will take you back to the first stop and from there you can grab a bite to eat before embarking on the upper and lower circuits. The upper circuit was the highlight of my day and where I finally got to see an Iguazu rainbow. It was incredible and I hope you get to experience it too.

It is definitely worth visiting both sides of Iguazu Falls as both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides offer a completely different experience. From the Brazil side you see the falls from a distance but get the most incredible panoramic views. From the Argentina side you still get those panoramic views on the upper and lower circuits and from the Devil's Throat you stand above the falls where you can see the water come in before it cascades down. A truly once in a lifetime experience.

The Geography and Natural Splendor of Iguazu Falls

Tucked away in the serene embrace of the Paraná Plateau, Iguazu Falls in Brazil stands as a testament to the breathtaking beauty that emerges at the confluence of Brazil and Argentina.

The falls are cradled by the Iguazu River, which meanders through Brazil before unveiling its grandeur at the precipice of the falls, a spectacle that captures the essence of South America’s natural splendor .

Geological Marvels and Water Flow

Iguazu Falls is a geological marvel, centuries in the making .

The story of its formation is as captivating as the falls themselves, beginning with volcanic activity that laid down layers of basalt rock .

Over time, the relentless force of water carved out the falls, creating a spectacular display of cascades.

The water flow at Iguazu is a powerful force, varying with the seasons. During the rainy season, the river swells, and the falls transform into an even more magnificent torrent, with the water’s roar echoing through the rainforest .

This dynamic flow shapes the landscape, constantly redefining the contours of the falls and the surrounding area, making each visit to Iguazu a unique experience.

Flora and Fauna Around the Falls

The area around Iguazu Falls in Brazil is a vibrant tapestry of biodiversity. The lush rainforest that envelops the falls is part of the larger Atlantic Forest, a biome known for its rich biodiversity and high number of endemic species .

This verdant backdrop is home to an astonishing variety of life, including over 2,000 plant species, which create a green sanctuary around the water’s edge .

Orchids and bromeliads add splashes of color, while ancient trees tower overhead, their canopies teeming with life.

The fauna of Iguazu is as diverse as its flora. The dense foliage hides jaguars, tapirs, and ocelots, while the skies are ruled by over 400 species of birds, including the colorful toucan with its iconic bill .

The area is also a haven for butterflies , adding a fluttering layer of beauty to the falls.

This incredible biodiversity not only makes Iguazu Falls a natural wonder but also a critical area for conservation efforts, as it represents one of the last remnants of the Atlantic Forest’s rich ecosystems.

The sun casts a bright haze over the extensive Iguazu Falls, highlighting the massive scale and majestic beauty of the cascades.

Historical Significance of Iguazu Falls

The falls have been a site of awe and inspiration long before they were discovered by European explorers, deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of indigenous cultures and legends that predate modern boundaries .

This section delves into the historical significance of Iguazu Falls, exploring the early explorations that brought it to the world’s attention and the indigenous myths that continue to shape its mystique.

Early Explorations and Naming

The history of Iguazu Falls is as captivating as its beauty. The first European to lay eyes on this natural wonder was the Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541, during his expedition in search of the fabled City of Gold .

He named the falls “Santa María,” a name that eventually faded into obscurity as the local Guarani name, “Iguazu,” took precedence .

Iguazu translates to “big water” in the Guarani language, a fitting descriptor for the vast and powerful cascade .

This encounter marked the beginning of the falls’ global recognition, drawing explorers and adventurers from around the world to witness its majesty.

Indigenous Legends and European Encounters

Long before European explorers arrived, Iguazu Falls in Brazil was steeped in the mythology of the indigenous Guarani people .

One legend tells of a deity who, angered by a mortal’s betrayal, sliced the river, creating the falls and condemning the lovers to an eternal fall .

You can learn a little more about this legend in the video below:

Such tales speak volumes about the cultural significance of the falls to the indigenous people, for whom it was a site of spiritual reverence and a testament to nature’s power.

The encounter between European explorers and indigenous peoples at Iguazu Falls is a pivotal chapter in the region’s history , reflecting a period of change, discovery, and ultimately, the blending of cultures.

These interactions brought Iguazu Falls into the annals of global natural wonders, making it a symbol of exploration and the enduring allure of the unknown.

The Parks of Iguazu: Conservation Efforts and Tourism Impact

Both the Brazilian and Argentine sides of Iguazu Falls have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites , a recognition that speaks volumes about their global significance and the collective responsibility to protect these natural treasures.

As we explore the parks and their conservation efforts, it’s crucial to understand the delicate balance between welcoming tourists and safeguarding the environment.

Iguazu National Park in Brazil

On the Brazilian side, the Iguazu National Park serves as a sanctuary not just for the falls themselves but for a rich biodiversity that thrives in its Atlantic rainforest ecosystem .

Established in 1939, the park covers an expansive area, ensuring protection for countless species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region .

The Brazilian park offers panoramic views of the falls, allowing visitors to grasp the scale of this natural wonder while minimizing human impact on the most sensitive areas.

Efforts in Brazil have focused on sustainable infrastructure, such as eco-friendly walkways that prevent soil erosion and allow wildlife to move freely, and educational programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of conservation among visitors .

Conservation Initiatives and Sustainable Tourism

The challenge of preserving Iguazu Falls in Brazil amid growing tourist interest has led to innovative conservation initiatives on both sides of the border.

Sustainable tourism practices are at the heart of these efforts , ensuring that the awe-inspiring beauty of the falls can continue to be enjoyed without compromising the ecological integrity of the parks.

Measures include strict visitor limits in sensitive areas, the promotion of eco-friendly tours, and significant investment in research and monitoring programs to study the impact of human activity on the local environment .

Additionally, both parks have engaged in reforestation projects to restore areas affected by past deforestation, enhancing the habitat for the diverse wildlife that calls the parks home.

Beyond the Falls: Activities and Attractions

Exploring Iguazu Falls is an unforgettable adventure, but the journey doesn’t end at the water’s edge.

The area surrounding the falls is rich with additional attractions and activities that promise to enrich your visit .

From up-close encounters with exotic wildlife to adrenaline-pumping tours and dives into the deep pool of local culture and history, there’s a whole world beyond the falls waiting to be discovered.

The Bird Park and Other Wildlife Encounters

Just outside the Iguazu National Park, the Parque das Aves (Bird Park) offers a sanctuary for bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts .

This internationally recognized conservation facility is home to more than 150 species of birds , including the vibrant toucans, majestic harpy eagles, and playful parrots, many of which are rescued and rehabilitated.

Cultural and Historical Sites Nearby

The region’s rich tapestry is woven with vibrant cultural threads and historical strands that extend beyond the natural allure of the falls.

The Ecomuseum of Itaipu, for example, offers insights into the history of the Itaipu Dam and the region’s indigenous cultures , while the Marco das Três Fronteiras marks the point where Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay meet, offering a unique cultural experience and stunning views at sunset.

Additionally, the Jesuit Missions on the Argentine side , though a bit of a journey, provide a fascinating glimpse into the area’s colonial past, showcasing the complex history and enduring spirit of the local Guarani communities.

Iguazu Falls in Comparison: Niagara and Victoria Falls

When it comes to the world’s most magnificent waterfalls, Iguazu Falls stands tall alongside other iconic cascades such as Niagara Falls in North America and Victoria Falls in Africa .

Each of these natural wonders has its unique allure, drawing visitors from around the globe.

A comparative analysis reveals just how Iguazu Falls in Brazil distinguishes itself not only in sheer size and flow but also in its approach to conservation and global recognition .

Size, Flow Rate, and Visitor Experience

Iguazu Falls in Brazil, with its impressive array of 275 individual cascades spread across a 2.7-kilometer expanse, outmatches Niagara’s more concentrated flow and Victoria’s singular, vast curtain of water .

The flow rate of Iguazu can reach up to 6,500 cubic meters per second during the rainy season, rivaling that of Niagara and surpassing Victoria’s average .

However, it’s the visitor experience where Iguazu truly shines .

The falls are enveloped by the lush Atlantic rainforest, offering a multitude of vantage points from both the Brazilian and Argentine sides .

This provides a more immersive experience, allowing visitors to feel intimately connected with the natural environment in a way that’s distinct from the more urban settings of Niagara or the remote, raw nature of Victoria.

Crystal clear blue skies over Iguazu Falls, with cascading waters flowing amidst verdant islets and rocks.

Conservation Status and Global Recognition

In terms of conservation and global recognition, all three waterfalls are celebrated for their ecological and cultural significance, but Iguazu Falls enjoys the distinction of being part of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites , emphasizing its importance in both Brazil and Argentina.

This dual recognition underscores a commitment to preserving the unique biodiversity of the surrounding rainforest, which houses thousands of species of flora and fauna.

Efforts to balance tourism with environmental preservation at Iguazu are evident in the carefully managed visitor access and sustainable tourism practices, setting a benchmark for natural attractions worldwide.

Essential Tips for Visitors

To ensure that your experience is as memorable and smooth as possible, it’s crucial to come prepared and to approach this natural wonder with the respect it deserves .

Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your visit while preserving the beauty of Iguazu Falls for future generations.

What to Bring and Wear

The key to enjoying Iguazu Falls in Brazil is comfort and preparedness.

Given the tropical climate, lightweight, breathable clothing is a must.

Expect warm, humid weather, but be ready for rain showers, which can occur unexpectedly .

A waterproof jacket or poncho can be a lifesaver, keeping you dry during boat tours or sudden downpours.

Comfortable, water-resistant footwear is essential , as you’ll be walking on wet and possibly slippery paths.

Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses to protect against the sun, along with sunscreen , even on cloudy days.

Equally important is to carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day without contributing to plastic waste.

For capturing the stunning views, bring a camera or smartphone, ideally with a waterproof case or bag for protection .

Lastly, considering the lush surroundings and proximity to water, insect repellent is a must to keep pesky mosquitoes at bay , ensuring a more enjoyable experience.

Safety Guidelines and Respect for Wildlife

Iguazu Falls is not just a tourist destination; it’s a vibrant ecosystem home to countless species of plants and animals.

Respecting wildlife is paramount—feeding or attempting to touch the animals, including the coatis that roam the park, can be harmful to their health and alter their natural behaviors .

Always maintain a safe distance, and use binoculars or a camera zoom to observe them closely.

Adhering to safety guidelines is crucial for a safe visit.

Stay within designated pathways and viewing platforms to avoid accidents and minimize environmental impact.

Guardrails and signs are there for your protection; climbing over them for a better photo is dangerous and damages the site .

Additionally, listen to park rangers and guides; their expertise and advice are invaluable for a safe and fulfilling visit.

By following these essential tips and approaching your visit with mindfulness and respect for nature, you’ll not only ensure a remarkable experience at Iguazu Falls but also contribute to the preservation of this incredible natural wonder for the enjoyment of future visitors .

Visiting Iguazu Falls: A 2-3 Day Itinerary + Hotel from Puerto Iguazu

Posted on Last updated: February 12, 2020

If you’re planning on visiting Iguazu Falls and want to make the absolute most of your trip, you’ve come to the right place! This 2-3 day Iguazu Falls Itinerary will take you through both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides of the falls, leaving from Puerto Iguazu (the Argentinian side), with some extra adventures if you are up for them (which you are, duh).

Two days is enough in Puerto Iguazu, but I recommend three. This is so you can spend one day on the Argentinian side of the falls, one on the Brazilian side, and one either relaxing at your hotel pool (the weather here is pretty good year round  – see below to see where I stayed ) or exploring indigenous communities, butterfly farms, or other lesser-known yet awesome things to do in Puerto Iguazu.

So, that’s why this Iguazu Falls itinerary is 2-3 days; as always with my guides and itineraries, you can choose your own adventure.

Visiting Iguazu Falls on Both Sides

So in case you didn’t know, Iguazu Falls forms the border between Argentina and Brazil, deep in the jungle. We can debate which side is better later! But, if you want to make the most of your trip, you’re going to want to see both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides so you can make that determination yourself – it’s one of the best things to do in both Brazil and Argentina.

In order to plan your two days visiting Iguazu Falls on either side, you can either do it yourself via public transportation, or you can book a tour that takes you to each side – one side one day, and the other the next. Personally, I recommend taking a tour, because that way it’s totally hassle-free and you get everything organized for you and you to get to learn all the fun facts and history of Iguazu falls at the same time.

Experiences with Tinggly

I booked my tours through Tinggly, which is an amazing company that lets you give adventures as gifts. You can totally get it for yourself (treat yo-self!) or you can get your loved ones adventure packages for their birthday/Christmas instead of your usual run-of-the-mill material gifts. You can book/give the tour I did for either one person or two people, as well as hunreds of other experiences.

Check Tinggly for a full list of experiences, including a trip to Iguazu Falls!

These tours pick you up from and return you to your hotel (see below for my hotel recommendation!) and take care of everything about the falls besides entrance fees. The guide will inform you about everything in English and Spanish and handle adventure timings too.

tips to know before visiting iguazu falls

The falls taken from the Gran Aventura boat ride

Getting to and from Puerto Iguazu

To be honest, Iguazu Falls is kinda in the middle of nowhere. There’s no sensical travel route to take that it’s close to, and honestly because of this it’s best just to take a long bus in and our or fly.

Flights : Personally, I flew from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu for less than $75, which at the time was around the same price as a 24-hour bus. I was super happy with my decision! If you’re going the other way you can also fly from Salta to Iguazu , or from Iguazu to Salta after your trip.

Busses: Again, the bus from Buenos Aires is about 24 hours. You can also take busses to Salta from here which are also super long, but in South America, you’ll have to get used to long busses!

I traveled through Paraguay for a few days after Iguazu, but that was sort of an adventure on my part and not totally recommended as the best travel route. Going to Salta next is probably the best option.

You can pre-organize round trip airport transfers to Puerto Iguazu airport in advance if you like. Many hotels include pickup but not drop off at the airport.

Quick Iguazu Falls Facts + Info

Before you begin visiting Iguazu Falls, I want to give you a little bit of history and information about them that I learned on my tour.

Iguazu Falls are the biggest waterfall system in the world.  One side of the falls is Brazil and one is Argentina, and Paraguay is just a kilometer or two away from there. There is a point in each country where you can stand and see all three – more on that later!

Iguazu Falls is fully formed by rainwater   – no mountain snowmelt or glacier water at all! The area has similar levels of rainfall all year round, so the water level should be pretty high no matter when you visit without too much fluctuation. The mean temperature all year round is 25C (77F!)

Iguazu Falls became a national park in 1934 after the frontier between the three countries (Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil) was decided in 1865. The first walkways that people walk on today when visiting Iguazu Falls were made in the 50’s, and have since been remodeled.

There are 2100m of waterfalls on the Argentinian side, and 600m in Brazil. This may seem an obvious advantage for Argentina, until you realize that being on one side gives you a better and more fully encompassed view of the other side rather than standing above the falls and looking down. But, many have different opinions on this!

Wildlife:  You might see some different wildlife on your trip visiting Iguazu Falls, such as coati (raccoon-like scavengers you should not touch!), turtles in the water, and Yacare, which are like mini crocodiles!

Scenes from the Devil’s Throat

Day 1 Visiting Iguazu Falls: Argentinian Side

Since you are visiting Iguazu Falls from Puerto Iguazu, I recommend you begin your time by visiting the Argentinian side of the Falls. There are basically four places you need to know about to visit the Argentinian side of Iguazu Falls, which are as follows:

Devil’s Throat (La Garganta del Diablo)

This is the massive and most famous part of Iguazu Falls, shaped in a thin valley like if you made the letter ‘C’ with your hand. The waterfalls cascade into a central point from all sides of this elongated ‘C’ shaped valley, creating such an incredible force of nature I can hardly put it into words.

This is where the largest volume of water falls down, and is also the highest drop at 80m down.

On the Argentinian side of the Devil’s throat, you stand right above the powerful cascading water, occasionally able to make out the bottom of the valley when the soaking wet mist clears for a moment. And yes, you get soaking wet too! You’ll want to bring a poncho here, and to protect your valuables. It’s so humbling to stand at the top of one of the worlds largest waterfalls, but to do it you’ll need to get a bit wet.

Getting to the Devils Throat Argentina:

When visiting Iguazu Falls on day 1 of your Iguazu itinerary, you’ll want to start by taking the train to the Devils Throat. A tour would take care of this for you, but basically, once you enter the park you’ll purchase a little train ticket and take a short 5-10 minute ride 6km to the end of the waterfall system where the Devil’s Throat is.

Pro Tip: when boarding the train, sit on the left side. This faces the water!

Then there are pathways out over the water that take you right into the midst (or… mist ) of the incredible Iguazu Falls. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk to the top, and trains run all day. It’s a pretty vast contrast between the tranquility of the water on the boardwalk vs. the sheer power of the falls when you reach them!

visiting iguazu falls is one of the best things to do in argentina!

Circuito Superior and Circuito Inferior

The Circuito Superior (upper circuit) and the Circuito Inferior (lower circuit) are more metal pathways that take you to closer viewpoints of other parts of Iguazu Falls. The Upper circuit goes above the falls, allowing you to look down from above and see the water falling dozens of meters down. The lower circuit takes you to about the mid-point of a few waterfalls and along the river at the bottom.

These circuits are in the main part of the National Park, so to get to them you’ll have to take the train back to the beginning and follow signs to them.

Pro Tip : They are one-way so make sure to get all your photos in each lookout point before moving on!

boarding the Iguazu falls gran aventura

The Gran Aventura (Grand Adventure)

If there’s one thing not to miss when visiting Iguazu Falls, it’s the grand adventure. This is a safari vehicle ride to a zodiac boat that takes you up close and personal to Iguazu Falls. I believe you can also do boat rides from the Brazilian side of the falls, but it’s cheaper and more popular to do here.

First, you’ll take a bumpy safari vehicle deep into the jungle, learning about more plants, animals, and history behind the falls.

When you arrive at the launch point, you’ll receive a dry bag and a massive life vest… both of which you will soon find out are much needed. I recommend a poncho for the Gran Aventura as well… hell, I recommend a wetsuit. Because you are going to get wet.

First, you take the zodiac boat up the river towards the falls, and they give you a little while to take photos up close before your imminent demise. After warning you to place your valuables deep inside your dry bag, it’s ‘shower time.’ And I’ll tell you, my plastic poncho has never been so ineffective in my life. Now, you get the unique experience to literally take a dip under Iguazu Falls, or, rather, 3 or 4 dips under different waterfalls!

We didn’t go deep into the Devil’s Throat (I can only assume that would be life-threatening!) but it was a huge thrill to get totally soaked under the biggest waterfall system in the world.

Watch my video in my Instagram story highlights to see how that went for me! You can also book tours that include the Gran Aventura, like this one , otherwise it’s a bit of an extra (worthwhile) cost.

After the Gran Aventura is over, you may have some time visiting Iguazu Falls gift shops before returning to your accommodation.

For the evening, most hotels in Puerto Iguazu have great restaurants, or take a walk or quick cab into town to check out more options.

Day 2 Vistiting Iguazu Falls – Brazillian Side

Now it’s time for Visiting Iguazu Falls on the other side. With a tour, you don’t have to worry too much about the border because it’s all taken care of for you. On my tour, we just gave our guide our passports and stamped in and out of Argentina, without having to do immigration in Brazil because it was jsut a day trip. However, if you are American, make sure your visa is applied for and granted and that you have the proper paperwork to enter Brazil .

Iguazu Falls Circuit in Brazil

This side is much more simple, with a 1200m circuit to walk to see all of Iguazu Falls’ Brazillian side. You’ll begin right across from the upper circuit in Argentina, with, in my opinion, has a better view of it than looking down it from the Argentinian side.

Yes…. I said it. I do think the view is better here . Although there are less actual waterfalls on the Brazilian side, I think being on this side presents a better view of the 2100m of falls on the Argentinian side. Some people think it’s better to be closer to more waterfalls and standing next to them, but I personally preferred seeing all of them in a single view from afar. That’s my opinion! 🙂

You’ll walk along the pathway and get tons of different views of all of Iguazu Falls. There are plenty of lookout points and viewpoints, and the whole thing ends at another platform with a different view of the Devil’s Throat.

The Devil’s Throat on the Brazilian side of the falls is viewable from a platform about mid-level height of the falls. From here you’ll look out toward the Devil’s throat from outside of it, getting a full view of all sides of water pouring down into the valley. It’s definitely different than standing above it, and provides a totally different perspective on the most powerful part of the falls. In my opinion, it’s so worth making the most of visiting Iguazu Falls and seeing both sides.

brazil parque das aves bird park iguacu falls

Brazil Bird Park

The Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls is also apparently home to the largest bird park in the world! This would be an awesome addition to visiting Iguazu Falls if you are into that kind of thing – or even if you aren’t! Why not visit the largest bird park in the world while you are here? Most tours will give this as an option to ad an extra couple hours into your tour, and also to include discounted bird park admission with your ticket.

On a tour, you’ll also get the chance to stop at a fantastic artisanal craft gift shop before visiting Iguazu Falls, and also to stop at a duty free shop at the border. The craft shop is actually inredible – I’m usually not one for souvenirs and I couldnt help myself from a few purchases here. The duty free shop is good for anyone who will be traveling a long time and wants to pick up anything duty free.

Another incredible marvel – this one man made – that is worth visiting in the area is Itaipu Dam. This Dam is on the Brazillian side of the border, and seperates Brazil from Paraguay. It is the second largest dam in the world, and used to the the largest until a dam in Chila recently surpassed it. Nonetheless, it is totally incredible and you can go inside to learn more about the engineering that goes on inside.

This tour here actually takes you to the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls and Itaipu Dam, if you are more interested in the dam than the bird park.

This tour here takes you to all three (The Falls, Itaipu Dan, and the Bird Park) in one big adventurous day.

Day 3 Vistiting Iguazu Falls – Puerto Iguazu

Today is a ‘choose-your-own-adventure” day in Puerto Iguazu. I was so impressed by this little city and how much different it was from the rest of Argentina. It really feels much more like Latin America than a lot of the country with its European touches.

Even in that it’s a tiny city, there’s actually TONS to do here – from visiting indigenous Guarani communities, to visiting the Tres Fronteras, to shopping in town, to visiting museums, gardens, and butterfly farms – you will still be spoilt for choice.

Hell, you could even spend today relaxing at your hotel in the sun, or in a hammock on your balcony. See below for my hotel recommendation, but for now, here are quite a few things to do in Puerto Iguazu to make the most of your time visiting Iguazu Falls.

Visit a Guarani Community

This region of the world was inhabited originally by the Guarani people, an indigenous tribe. The name ‘Iguazu’ actually comes from the Guarani language meaning ‘Aguas Grandes” or “big water!” The names of quite a few neighboring countries, such as Paraguay and Uruguay, also come from Guarani roots.

Here in Puerto Iguazu it is possible to visit quite a few Guarani communities and learn about their culture. There’s one right next to the hotel I stayed at! You can book a tour like this one to see the Guarani, or the tour below.

Puerto Iguazu Jungle Bike Tour

Biking the Yaguarundi Road is a great way to familiarize yourself with the local scenery, wildlife, and indigenous communities. If you are up for an adventure and want to visit some locals, sign up for this two hour bike tour that leaves wach morning and evening and stops by some Guarani communities.

Visit the Tres Fronteras

This is the point where you can see Argentina, Brazil, and Praguat all at once! The river that seperates Brazil and Argentina runs perpendicular to a river that seperates Paraguay from the two countries, creating a point of  tres fronteras “three frontiers” where you can see all three.

Tres fronteras in Argentina has a huge patio with vendors selling crafts, and also a point where you can take a photo with all three countey flags. Pretty cool, right? Have you ever been anywhere where you could see three countries at once?

You can also squeeze this visit in on day two to make more room for activities on day 3 of your Iguazu Falls itinerary.

Day Tour to San Ignacio Mission and Wanda Mines

This is an amazing and lesser known activity in the Missiones province of Argentina, which is often overshadowed completely by Iguazu Falls.

The San Ignacio Mission was built by Jesuit missionaries in the early 1600’s, and has a fascinating history. The Wanda mines are the source of much of the area’s unique gemstones, many of which are actually only found in Northern Argentina.

Jungle Zipline Adventure

That’s right, you can have a jungle zipline advenure right from Puerto Iguazu that includes trekking, rappelling, and ziplining. It’s a half day tour so you can also combine it with more of these options.

butterfly park biocentro puerto iguazu

Iguazu Biocenter + Butterfly Gardens

Right in Puerto Iguazu and next to the Tres Fronteras you will find the Iguazu Biocenter, which is full of local flora and fauna. You will see local fish, reptiles, butterflies, and birds, as well as lots of plants – most famously, orchids.

You can do this as a tour with pickup service , or stop by while in town.

Craft Shopping

On the main streets of town, on the main plaza, and at the Tres Fronteras, you’ll find amazing indigenous crafts. This is a great place to get South America souvenirs, mate gourds, and more.

See a Brazillian Folkloric Show and All-You-Can-Eat BBQ

Haven’t gotten enough of Brazilian Culture? This tour actually takes you from your Puerto Iguazu hotel to an all-you-can-eat Brazillian BBQ with a Latin American folklore show. Sound like a great way to spend your last night to me!

where to stay in iguazu falls la aldea de la selva lodge hammock bacony suite

Where to Stay when Visiting Iguazu Falls

I was graciously hosted by La Aldea de La Selva Lodge during my time in Iguazu Falls, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with this property. Their rooms are insanely affordable and are far more similar to suites than hotel rooms. My ‘room’ (I use this term loosely because it was far more than that 😉 ) had an entryway, a huge bathroom with a bath and window out to the jungle, a massive main room with a desk, California king bed, and TV, and a private balcony lookout out into the jungle with a hammock. I was seriously at a loss for words when I walked in here, and overflowing with happiness (which you’ll remember if you saw my Instagram story from that day – its still on my highlights!)

La Aldea de La Selva really does the ‘middle of the jungle’ vibe incredibly well. The main reception and dining room are dimly lit by beautiful polished wooded lamps, with huge windows displaying nothing but deep green jungle beyond a small patio. The entire room is wooded and jungle themed, with flowers and colors to complete the feeling.

To get between the rooms and cabanas, you must walk on wooded pathways straight through the jungle. It seems as if you’re on a jungle hike until you discover more wooded signs directing you between different parts of the property. They even have a pathway all the way around the property, with informational signs with facts about this jungle and the wildlife within it.

The pool area is also spacious and relaxing, with a multi-level pool and plenty of comfortable chairs to relax in the warm jungle sun. This is exactly where I ended up each day after my tours, relaxing and even flying my drone to get an extra perspective of this gorgeous place.

The food here was also on a whole different level. The breakfast buffet was like something out of my dreams (pictured) and I tried a steak at the restaurant one night to make the most of my stay here – also delicious. I truly loved staying here, and felt so at peace as if I was at a spa retreat in the middle of the jungle.

Like I said, the rooms here are super affordable. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that they started at just over $100 for my dates.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Iguazu Falls Brazil

Last Updated on February 29, 2024 by Natalia

With spectacular waterfalls amongst a backdrop of dense rainforest, Iguazu Falls National Park is not only one of the most iconic travel destinations in South America, but one of the most beautiful too. Spanning the border between Argentina and Brazil, the falls are truly remarkable. When visiting Iguazu Falls in Brazil it’s best to stay in the nearby city of Foz de Iguacu. The Brazilian side of the falls gives a scenic perspective of this natural wonder from a distance. It’s truly astounding to witness the sheer scale of the thunderous waterfalls, which in total amount to roughly three times the size of the famed Niagara falls. Whilst visiting the Argentinian side gives you the chance to get up close to the waterfalls, the Brazilian side is better known for offering panoramic views across the falls – although you can still get close enough to get completely drenched! This guide covers everything you need to know about visiting Iguazu Falls Brazil, from tickets prices to where to stay and much more!

Table of Contents

How to get to Iguazu Falls Brazil/Foz de Iguacu

Flights –  There are regular flights to the Iguazu Falls Brazil airport (Foz de Iguacu International airport) from both  Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – with return flights available from around 320 Brazilian Reals.

Bus – If you’d prefer not to fly, buses are available from many major cities in Brazil, although they generally cost more for a return than a flight. We’d advise against paying more to spend an excessive amount of time on a bus. From Rio it will cost around 300 Reals one-way, with a journey time of around 24 hours.

How long to spend visiting Iguazu Falls Brazil?

Ideally, give yourself 2 or 3 days here just in case. That way you can delay your trip to Iguazu Falls if the weather is bad. The Brazilian side of the falls consists of a singular trail, so even with a few hours you’ll have all the time you need.

Best time to visit Iguazu Falls

The falls are an amazing spectacle year round, so whenever you visit you’re in for a treat. Due to greater rainfall between December and February, this is when the falls are at their most powerful. This does mean it’s peak time to visit and it can be extremely hot too – so keep this in mind if you visit in these months.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, we advise visiting Iguazu Falls in March/April (although avoid Easter) or August/September. As these months are between the wet and dry seasons, you’ll have the advantage of fewer crowds but the waterfalls will still have added power.

How to get to Iguazu Falls from Foz de Iguacu

The best way to get from Foz de Iguacu to the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls is to take the 120 bus. Buses leave every 20-30 minutes from Terminal de Transporte Urbano and take around 30 minutes to reach the national park. Tickets for the 120 bus to Iguazu Falls cost 4.10 Reals one-way.

Alternatively, if you’re happy to pay more then you can take a taxi from Foz de Iguacu to the falls. A one-way taxi ride to the falls should cost around 40-50 Reals.

Iguazu Falls Brazil Walkway

With only one trail to explore, visiting the Brazilian side is a lot more manageable in a day. Upon arrival you will need to book a bus time, which will then transport you to the trail.

Self-service machines are available and when we visited queues were much shorter so utilise these to save time! If you want to beat the crowds, book yourself on the first bus of the day at 9am. That way the trail won’t already be busy when you get there!

Depending on your pace, the trail can take anything from an hour upwards. You’ll find yourself being led to astonishing viewpoints, allowing you to witness many of the parks different waterfalls.

Take your time to really enjoy it and make the most of your visit to this incredible destination. You may also see some animals on the Iguazu Falls walkway, although we saw more on the Argentinian side!

Although tours can be arranged for visiting the Brazil side of Iguazu Falls, we personally think you’re better off saving your money as there is only one trail, which you can easily navigate without a map or tour guide!

What to take for a day at Iguazu Falls Brazil

Take plenty of water and any snacks you need, as once on the trail there’s nowhere to buy these. You’ll also find it’s much cheaper than buying food and drink within the park so it’s a good way to save money!

You may also want to consider taking a raincoat. It’s possible to get close enough to feel the spray of some waterfalls, and if you’d prefer to stay relatively dry then this should do the job.

1 Rock Climbing

There is so much more to do in Iguazu than just walking along paths and seeing waterfalls. Iguazu Falls are the best place to explore for adventures. The number of activities gives new learning opportunities for daredevils. One of the fascinating adventures one can go on is rock climbing which can make the heart race faster than the falls. intrepid travel iguazu falls

Ideal Length

Travel style, accommodation, iguazu falls travel package (brazil or argentina).

Nestled between the Argentine and Brazilian borders, Iguazu Falls are among the world’s biggest waterfalls. Twice as wide and much higher than Niagra falls and only second in size to Africa’s Victoria Falls, Iguazu is a breathtaking place to visit.  It’s the perfect add on trip if you are in Brazil or Argentina and a great buffer destination if you are traveling to Rio de Janeiro & Buenos Aires as it’s right in the middle of both cities (Only about a 2 hour flight from each city). Our Iguazu Falls Travel Package includes hotels on either side of Iguazu (Puerto Iguazu in Argentina and Foz de Iguacu in Brazil), flights, airport transfers, and tours to both the Argentine and Brazilian Sides of the Falls.

Our Iguazu Falls Travel package is available year round. From April to mid-October, the temperature is more mild and it rains less. From mid-October to April, the weather is more hot/humid and rainfall is more so the water levels are higher. Peak season in Iguazu Falls is between December & February as well as July & Easter (when locals are on vacation) so pricing is more expensive and it’s more crowded.

For our Iguazu Falls Travel Package, we recommend anywhere between 2 to 4 nights. The package is customizable and we can also add on additional excursions like the Itaipu Dam, Boat Excursions (on either side of the falls), Helicopter Tours as well as adventure options. This package is a great add on as you do not have to worry about anything and our suppliers in Iguazu Falls are extremely reliable, professional and always available to assist you while you are in Iguazu Falls.

Iguazu Falls Travel Package Includes:

  • Airfare (optional)
  • Hotel Accommodation
  • Airport/Hotel Transfers
  • Tour of Argentine Side of the Falls
  • Tour of Brazilian Side of the Falls
  • Taxes and Fees

* Airfare can be provided from any city in the world . ****You can select Brazil OR Argentine Falls to avoid visa/fee issues, if necessary. **** Typically people book 2 to 3 nights for the package.

Iguazu Falls Travel Package Sample Itinerary:

The sample itinerary is if you were staying on the Brazilian side of the Falls, but we can customize any side.

Day 1: Arrive at Falls (either on Argentina or Brazil side) . Transfer from airport to your hotel. Check into hotel. Rest of day at leisure to enjoy the falls or relax poolside at your hotel.

Day 2: Full Day Tour to Argentine Side of Falls: Pick-up in the morning from your hotel. All tour participants must have a valid passport in their possession. The 275 waterfalls that make up stunning Iguassu Falls straddle the border of Brazil and Argentina and sit not far from Paraguay. Arrive at the Lower Circuit in Iguazu National Park on the Argentina side. Walk a trail that is 0.8 miles (1.3 km) long and allows views of smaller falls like Carlos Bozzetti Waterfall. Continue to the Upper Circuit at the top of the waterfalls and catch panoramic views of the area on both sides of the border, including San Martin Island. On the Brazilian side, marvel at Devil’s Throat, a 262-foot (80-meter) fall that is the largest in both parks. At an impressive altitude of 262 feet (80 meters), Devil’s Throat is where the most water pours through the falls and is a must-see stop. After your day of exploration on the Argentinian side of Iguassu falls, return to your hotel.

Day 3: Half Day Brazilian Side: Pick-up in the morning from your hotel. Enter Iguaçu National Park to see what are arguably the best views of the tremendous Devil’s Throat waterfall. Watch as 14 falls drop 350 feet (107 meters) over a precipice with impressive, thunderous force. Be sure to bring your foul weather gear to protect you from the 100-foot (30-meter) cloud of mist that is suspended permanently overhead. This cloud is host to a steady rainbow, so get ready to snap lots of photos. Prepare to be impressed by these falls, which are taller than Niagara and twice as wide. During the rainy season from November to March, water can flow over these falls at 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic meters) per second. Trek through the forest to the bottom of Salto Floriano For an up-close view of the falls. After admiring that view, ride the park’s elevator to the top of the falls, or meander out over the falls at Salto Union.

In the late afternoon, you will be taken to the airport.
