Trek Recalls Bikes with Aeolus RSL VR-C Handlebars and Stems

Speed Concept SLR bicycles and Emonda SLRs purchased in 2021 and 2022 are affected

Trek Bicycle has announced a voluntary recall of all 2022 Speed Concept SLR bicycles, 2021-2022 Emonda SLR bicycles, and Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebars and stems sold as an aftermarket product. The recall is happening because the carbon base bar and handlebar/stem can crack if overloaded, causing the rider to lose control of the bike. Customers are asked to stop using the bike and to contact their local Trek dealer.

The bar itself is part of what helped reduce the overall drag reduction on the Emonda bike by roughly 70 grams, thanks to its sleek and lightweight design. Without it, the drag reduction compared to previous years is only 113 grams. Hopefully, Trek is able to correct the issue and make a sturdier bar that's equally lightweight and aero.

For Speed Concept SLR bicycles, Trek will provide a replacement base bar and free installation. For Emonda SLR bicycles and aftermarket Bontrager Aeolus RSL VC-R handlebars/stems, Trek will provide an individual handlebar and stem until an updated handlebar/stem combo is available.

Additionally, all customers who bring in their handlebars for replacement will also receive a $100 in-store credit that can be used toward any Trek or Bontrager merchandise through December 31, 2022.

BONTRAGER RSL MTB HANDLEBAR/STEM REVIEW

Review by Nic Hall

Bontrager’s RSL line (Race Shop Limited) are their highest end carbon components with crossover products in road, gravel, and mountain biking. We received their latest integrated bar/stem combo to put to the test. Being that it is e-bike certified, we stuck it on one of our test e-mtbs and got to work.

THE LAB RSL components have been an enviable piece of kit we have seen on several XC and gravel bikes, but now Bontrager is bringing the line to enduro and trail bikes. The newest MTB bar/stem combo is laid up in OCLV carbon, which is Trek’s proprietary layup that is supposed to offer extremely light weight while retaining compliance and strength. The combo is available in several sizes from XC specific 90mm stem x 750mm bars with a 13 degree stem drop to the more gravity focused 35mm stem x 820mm bars, and comes in every color as long as it is matte black.

Bontrager has designed the stem to work with both their Knock Block system headset, as well as a standard unit. Cut guides are printed on the bar to allow you to customize your length, along with shifter and brake position lines to get a perfect cockpit setup. All hardware is titanium, and the decals are a sweet premium-looking gloss gold over the matte carbon. They also feature Trek’s Blendr integration – a small screw port on the front of the bars that allows the integration of Blendr lights and computer mounts that are available separately.

THE DIRT Leaving the bars at 820mm is a bit wide for our preferences, so we cut them down to a still wide 800mm to see how they would fare on our Specialized Levo SL. Our bar had a 27.5mm rise, 35mm stem, and 7 degrees of backsweep and 6 degrees of upsweep – numbers that are quite different to “standard” bars, but proved to be comfortable still. Since the stem is integrated, install and setup time is minimized but of course you lose bar roll adjustability, so you better be happy with the angles. Once installed, the combo looks amazing – It is clean and svelte without looking too far from the future.

Weight is considerably lighter than comparable high end separate bar and stem combos at an impressive 247g. For comparison, the RaceFace Next R bar is 215g for just the bar and 160g for the Aeffect R stem. This comes at a price though, with the RSL combo coming in a good amount more expensive at $350 in the US or a whopping £399 in the UK.

Once out on the trail, the RSL bar has a good feel, with enough damping to keep your hands from taking too much abuse. It provides this reasonable comfort while remaining stiff enough to yank around an e-mtb without issue. The sweep and rise were comfortable for my taste as I usually run a slightly forward roll on my bar, but it won’t suit everyone. The bar survived a full week of trail work and e-shuttle abuse with no noticeable damage, but we will need more time with the bar to really put it to the test.

Bontrager RSL Handlebar/Stem Released

Bontrager RSL Handlebar/Stem Released

Just as I was considering upgrades to the Supercaliber , A Bontrager RSL Handlebar/Stem was announced by Trek. And, it looks amazing. RSL (Race Shop Limited) is Bontrager’s premium line. The cockpit is constructed using an OCLV process. The integrated bar/stem is light and strong. It’s also available in a variety of sizes for however you ride.

Bontrager RSL Handlebar/Stem

While integrated cockpits have been around for a while in the road category, less so for mountains bikers. See the Hyperspark for a custom example. The RSL will fit any stem using the included chip or adaptor for Trek’s knock block headsets (stops the stem from whacking the top tube).

The one-piece carbon combo RSL is available now for $349.99 .

Bontrager RSL Handlebar/Stem Product Details

  • OCLV Carbon construction
  • Compatibility with Knock Block and standard headset types (adapter included)
  • Seamless accessory integration with Trek’s Blendr mounts (sold separately) for lights
  • Shifter and brake lever position lines for spot-on control setup
  • 40mm trim lines allow for a personalized fit
  • Titanium hardware is lightweight and long-lasting

The RSL weighs between 214-250 grams. That saves weight from the aluminum stem, carbon bar the Supercaliber is set up with now. While not racing anymore, I do enjoy going fast and the looks of the bar.

Trek issues safety recall notice covering bikes and handlebars

Trek issues safety recall notice covering bikes and handlebars

Trek has issued a safety recall notice that covers the model year 2021-2022 Emonda SLR bikes, 2022 Speed Concept SLR triathlon bikes, and the Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebar/stem. The US brand says that it is “recalling these products because the carbon base bar and handlebar/stem can crack if overloaded” which could cause a serious accident.

“Do not ride a bicycle equipped with the affected base bar or handlebar/stem until it has been brought to a Trek retailer for replacement,” says Trek.

bontrager aeolus rsl road bar stem

These are the models covered by the safety recall notice:

  • All model year 2022 Speed Concept SLR bicycles, including Project One and stock bicycles in any colourway
  • All model year 2021 and 2022 Emonda SLR bicycles, including Project One and stock bicycles in any colourway
  • All aftermarket Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebars/stems

If you’re unsure whether your bicycle or handlebar/stem is affected by this recall, Trek advises that you take it to your local Trek retailer for a free inspection.

> All-new Émonda gets aero to become "Trek’s fastest climbing bike ever" – and it's disc brake-only

If you do own a recalled Speed Concept SLR, Trek will install a replacement base bar and new bar tape.

If you have a recalled Emonda SLR or an aftermarket Bontrager Aeolus RSL VC-R handlebar/stem, Trek will provide you with a handlebar and stem – plus bar tape – that you can use temporarily (and are yours to keep). Then your retailer will let you know when an updated handlebar/stem combo is available for installation.

On top of that, Trek will give you a £100 in-store credit that can be used towards any Trek or Bontrager product, to be used by the end of the year.

When Trek launched the latest Emonda SLR in 2020, the Aeolus RSL VR-C handlebar/stem was a key part of the claim that this was its fastest climbing bike ever.

Trek said that the design was nearly 10% faster than its predecessor (okay, a handlebar can't exactly be 'faster', but the idea is that improved aero efficiency will allow you to ride at a higher speed for a given power output), saving a 65kg rider the equivalent of seven watts (based on wind tunnel testing calculations, averaging 28mph with a 7mph wind speed on a flat road). That's a significant proportion of the Emonda SLR's claimed aero benefit.

The Aeolus RSL VR-C bar/stem features an integrated cable management system. The cables/hoses don't run internally but are positioned in a groove underneath the handlebar section while a carbon clamp sits underneath the stem.

This isn't the first high-profile handlebar/stem recall we've seen recently, Canyon having said that bikes fitted with its CP0018 and CP0015 bars should not be ridden last year due to the risk of failure.

Specialized announced a stop-ride notice and a voluntary recall of its top-level Tarmac SL7 road bike  last year because of an issue with the fork steerer.

Both of these issues have since been resolved.

Having found the problem, the response looks decent to me - they're replacing the part and giving a voucher, which should be a lot more use than some as Bontrager components and accessories are pretty decent.

I had a car recall for an airbag replacement. 2 hours at the dealership, no compensation and an entirely erroneous suggestion that the car needed several hundred pounds worth (at their spectacular rates) of work. I'd far rather get the Trek treatment.

Honestly, in such a scenario I'd much rather they paid me the money to replace the handlebars myself with whatever else than to have to wait for weeks (check out their Facebook page for comments from owners who were concerned by this recall) to get my bike back. Or that they simply ship me the replacement parts.

Having seen amateur attempts at component replacement, and this bike is in the range of all the gear and no idea customers (it would be interesting to see how many purchasers were using the bike in some form of competition which is the only scenario where marginal gains of the form these handlebars give make sense - my guess is less than 5%) I'm not sure that your average owner could be trusted.

Also, my Spidey senses tell me that replacing integrated handlebar with internally routed cables may not be a breeze for your typical home mechanic.

So on a safety recall, I don't think Trek have any choice but to require professional fitting. That's before we get onto bright sparks who decide that they've got a free handlebar and sell the replacement - or the original, depending on how keen they are on their own Darwin entry.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem review

No clutter on the handlebars and perfectly centred accessories sounds great, but does it work.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem

Cyclingnews Verdict

An excellent option if your needs line up. Double check though, because making changes takes a bit of time and it’s not as universal as the concept sounds. The strongest pull for this design is going to come from those who have a desire to stick with Trek products for a matching look.

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

Modern cycling often means accessories on the handlebars. Mounting those accessories is a challenge that has given rise to a wide breadth of manufacturers with innovative solutions. Brands such as K-Edge and Bar Fly have filled a need and created mounts that handle everything you could need. What those solutions tend to have in common is that they are an add-on.

If you are looking to upgrade to something from our list of the best road handlebars you might be replacing your stem anyway. Why not choose a stem with an integrated mounting solution? It could clean up the front of the bike and keep your accessories mounted to the exact centre of the bike. If you are picky about how your bike looks there's a certain draw but it has to work. With that in mind, we spent time with the Bontrager RSL Blendr stem understanding how it works and what it does best. If you like the sound of simplifying the front of your bike, keep reading to see our thoughts on the Bontrager take on a solution.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem the view from the saddle

Design and aesthetics

Let's be honest here, you could use an alloy stem and get similar performance for a lot less money. Bontrager itself offers the Pro Blendr stem with the same features for less than half the price. The RSL Blendr stem does win on weight, saving 13 grams with a weight of 120 grams for a 100mm stem, but that's an awful small difference for the price. There is also some additional stiffness and better vibration reduction possible with carbon but that's not why it makes sense for some people.

In most situations, this is an emotional purchase. It's all about matching the style and looking great on your bike. That's okay, those are important considerations also. Your bike is a collection of design choices that lead to high performance and there are certain pieces that make sense to keep matching. A stem is one of those pieces and the Bontrager RSL Blendr stem is a choice you won't regret making.

Staring at your stem while making your way up yet another climb is sure to bring a bit of joy when it looks this good. The shapes are smooth and organic with elegant curves and valleys. The finish is a matte black that somehow manages to ward off fingerprints that are common to finishes of this style. It's not completely impervious but it's not a magnet either. From the top, these are the features you will spend time staring at.

Off the bike, you can take in the other details. Sitting in contrast to the matte black is glossy, bronze, metallic text. On either side is a large RSL wordmark while the underside displays the text "Race Shop Limited." The text on the sides reads in the same direction so keep that in mind if you are considering switching the direction of the 7-degree angle. On the other hand, if you were to swap it, you'd have the pleasure of regularly seeing the elegant typesetting of the otherwise hidden "Race Shop Limited" text.

At the front of the stem are the pieces that make everything the Blendr integration work. Instead of a connected faceplate the RSL stem holds the bars with a pair of bands. That leaves the centre section free for either a single, or double, Blendr mount. What you can't see is that moulded into the carbon at the top and bottom is a small space where tabs on the nylon mount fit into the stem. You'll need to remove the bars to fit the mounts but once in place they are flush and completely secure.

Performance

The first thing you'll need to deal with is setting up the Bontrager RSL Blendr stem in a way that makes sense for you. You can run it with no mounts installed and no one would think something is missing. That's not really the point though so you'll want to think about what makes sense.

It is actually possible to snap the Blendr mounts onto the bars without removing them. You can't fit the tabs into the pockets that secure them though and the mounts aren't secure like this. That means if you want to make a configuration change you've got to remove the bars. Not a huge deal but it will mean getting out your torque wrench and getting the angle of the bars just right again.

This is further complicated by the fact that you have to choose between a double and single base mount. In the box you only get the mono base but if you'd like to mount two accessories, you'll need the duo base. That means if you want both a light and a computer at the same time, or a computer and a camera is another possibility, then you'll need to make another purchase.

Once you've made a choice of base everything from that point bolts on without much trouble. You'll have a Garmin high mount and an ion mount on hand without any extra purchases. There are some details about those pieces though. The Ion mount is too short to work with the Ion Pro RT so expect to use that with the Ion 200 RT. Meanwhile, the Garmin mount will put the computer up above the bars and there is no Wahoo mount available. If you want to keep the computer in front of the bars you can flip the base so the mount is lower but that only works for a single accessory and won't fit a 1030 series Garmin. If you want to run Wahoo you'll want to either pick up the Garmin mount adapter from them or look for a third-party Blendr mount.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem detail of tightening bolt

For most people this dance of figuring out how to make things work isn't going to be an ongoing problem. It's rare to switch computers and if you think through how things are going to fit before torquing down the bars you'll find something that works. It does pose a problem for occasional use of a light though. You'd need the Duo base to run a light but many people only sometimes run a light. In that scenario adding a light would require removing the handlebars or leaving the Duo installed and ruining the clean look you were after.

Assuming you find the setup that works for your needs though, it does work. The first ride I took it on took me on a 27-mile road ride before getting to the gravel. The road offers the possibility of small but high frequency vibration. Although the larger tyres I was running certainly helped, there was no issue with a vibrating computer. As I took to the gravel trail things remained steady but that wasn't the real test.

The real test was not expected. The gravel loop was 44 miles and a good portion of that was relatively smooth. That was all expected but as I climbed, I eventually turned off onto a logging road. I continued to climb and this is when the weather changed. When it began to snow I was under dressed and things got scary for a little while. For the next thirteen miles I descended on rough logging roads as quickly as I could.

There was no careful picking of lines. Instead, crashing through big cuts and holes in the road was how things went. My dexterity was low and I wasn't thinking clearly plus I was moving faster than I should have been. More than once I wondered if I'd damaged a wheel but through it all my computer was rock solid. It never drooped and certainly never fell. If the Blendr mount survived that, it'll survive anything.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem close up view of mount

The way that Bontrager implements its mount isn't the best solution. The Enve carbon stem is a product with a similar concept but it uses a single mount and connects it to an aluminium K-edge computer mount. The K-edge mount means the computer is down low, there's tons of adapters available, and there's a GoPro mount underneath for lights or cameras. You don't have to remove the bars if you don't want to run a light and also keep everything looking clean and tidy.

That consideration might be a secondary thought though. A carbon stem is already an emotional purchase and the Bontrager RSL stem is beautiful. If you'd like to stick with Bontrager to match your bike, or your handlebars, then you aren't losing out. It just might mean you have to work a little harder to find the configuration that works for you.

We would advise against riding these handlebars in the meantime. Once available, full details for our recall will be shared on our website listed below: https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/comp ... y_recalls/ Stay tuned for updates there and also lookout for contact from your retailer.
