We are experienced travelers who have been all over the world but our trip to Sicily last May was really something special. "Wine Tour in Sicily" designed and completely customized a private tour for our group of eight friends that exceeded our expectations. From the state of the art wineries where we were served gourmet food and wine pairings, to the wonderful accommodations, to the amazing World Heritage sites and the expert private tour guides who made history come alive for us --- to the fabulous food and wine we enjoyed all over Sicily --- every aspect of our trip was first rate. Our tour lasted eight days and there is not one thing we would have changed or done differently. Our itinerary unfolded like clockwork. Everyone was ready for us and on time and every little detail was taken care of. Even our spacious private tour bus and our friendly, English speaking driver were much appreciated by our group. "Wine tour in Sicily" gave us the perfect mix of wine, food, history, gorgeous scenery and culture ---- truly a trip of a lifetime! Judi M.

Unforgettable wine tours in Sicily

Sicily is one of the largest and most productive wine regions in Italy, with over 100,000 hectares under vine. The island with its classic Mediterranean climate has a long history of viticulture and a long-standing reputation as a food and wine paradise. Its most famous wine in antiquity was the deeply coloured Mamertino, a favourite of Emperor Julius Caesar, thought to have been produced from the Nocera variety from the north-eastern part of the island.

Tours Suggestion in Sicily

sicily wine tours

Sicily has a wealth of indigenous grapes to discover, ensuring wine tours in Sicily will offer something new to even the most seasoned of wine tourists. Along with its signature red grape, Nero D’Avola , also known locally as Calabrese, this sun-drenched island is also home to white varieties such as Catarratto, Carricante, Grillo, Inzolia, Grecanico, Malvasia di Lipari and various Moscatos. Sicily also has its fair share of reds including Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Frappato and Perricone. Naturally, international varieties have also achieved success here, with Syrah finding the hot climate especially to its liking.

As the Mediterranean’s largest island with a history as the crossroads of trade and commerce, its appealing mix of civilisations and wide range of terroirs, it offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking unique wine tours. Sicily has 20 appellations, known as Denominazione di Origine Controllata (e Garantita) – DOC or DOCG – and one which covers the whole of the island, Sicilia DOC . Wines sold under these appellations are strictly controlled for quality.

Some of Italy’s highest vineyards can be found on the fertile slopes of Etna, a still active volcano , where Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio give rise to Etna Rosso, whereas Carricante and Catarratto form the backbone of Etna Bianco. Near to Etna you can also take in breath-taking coastlines and visit the ruins of the Roman theatre in Taormina with spectacular views over the crystal-clear sea.

The south of the island gives you the opportunity to explore ancient Greek temples near Agrigento, visit the historic port of Siracusa and wander the streets of the well-preserved Baroque towns of Noto and Ragusa before savouring some Nero D’Avola or Cerasuolo di Vittoria reds. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is Sicily’s only DOCG and is made from a blend of Nero D’Avola and Frappato, a light, refreshing raspberry-scented variety. Siracusa and Noto are also famed for their sweet Moscatos. Indeed prior to the red wine revolution of the nineties, Sicily was more famed for its luscious sweet wines.

Marsala is historically the most important wine in Sicily . Wine tours to the west of the island will give wine lovers the opportunity to sample this unique fortified wine, created by Englishman John Woodhouse in the eighteenth century for export to the British market. The dusty port of Marsala conjures up images of the Arabic world, which Sicily was once part of.

Wine tours in Sicily may also take in the spectacular black island landscapes of Pantelleria, located just 52 miles from Tunisia, where visitors can sip the unctuous Passito di Pantelleria made from the Zibibbo grape, the local name for Moscato di Alessandria. This name may come from Zabib, which means raisins in Arabic, reflecting the fact that the grapes are dried in the sun to produce this wine. The traditional head-training of the vines practised on the scorched island are listed as UNESCO world heritage.

An unmissable stop on any wine tour in Sicily is the still-grumbling volcanic Aeolian Island archipelago which can be reached by hydrofoil from Milazzo. Here you can sample the fragrant sweet Malvasia delle Lipari with its scents of freshly picked apricots, produced mainly on the island of Lipari and nearby Salina.

Sicilian Wine Tastings

Discover sicilian wines, search for your sicilian wine tasting in the winery, book your visit to the winery to taste wines and discover the wineries of sicily.

Winery Tasting Sicily was created with the aim of promoting wine tourism in Sicily . If you love Sicily and good wine, don’t miss the chance to get to know the native vines and to visit the interesting wine-growing realities of the island. You can experience unforgettable food and wine tours and taste Sicilian wines by booking directly a tour of the winery. Between different toasts you can discover the landscape wonders of the territory and its rich cultural products. You can also arrange your wine tour in a very broad time span, because Sicliy climate is mild and the grape wine harvest lasts more than three months. It begins with the heat of August in Trapani and extends up to the snow-covered slopes of Etna in mid-November. Sicily is one of the most interesting wine regions in Europe, thanks to its powerful sun, to the native vines and to the different terroirs.

From a geographical and wine-growing point of view, Sicily can be divided into four macro areas: east, center, west and Pantelleria and Favignana islands.

The east area is represented by Etna, in the province of Catania, with its native vineyards climbing up to 1100 meters and hosting Carricante used in purity to produce Etna Bianco DOC, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio that give life to the oldest DOC on the island: Etna Rosso DOC.

The north-eastern corner, in the province of Messina, produces the white Mamertino DOC wine. It is obtained from the Ansonica and Grillo grapes, whereas the red wine cames from the Nero d’Avola and the precious Nocera grapes. In particular, the famous sweet Malvasia delle Lipari is produced on the island of Salina: it is a passito and liqueur wine, obtained thanks to the aromatic grape and to the Corinto Nero grapes. The dry Malvasia is also highly appreciated.

In the south-east corner of the island, in the province of Syracuse, there are some typical excellences of the territory such as Moscato (Passito, sparkling and liqueur wine) and the Eloro DOC vines (Frappato, Pignatello, Nero d’avola and Pachino), whereas, Cerasuolo di Vittoria (the only Sicilian DOCG) and Rosso di Pachino (obtained from Nero d’Avola grapes) are produced in the province of Ragusa renowed for its production of structured reds made with Nero d’Avola and Frappato grapes.

In the center of the island, in the provinces of Enna, Caltanissetta and Agrigento, native vines are grown - Ansonica, Catarratto, Grecanico, Grillo and Nero d’Avola especially in Butera, Riesi, Mazzarino and Contessa Entellina areas; together with Italian and international grape varieties such as Fiano, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah. The province of Palermo is actually known for the fine white wines (Grillo, Catarratto and Inzolia) and the red ones (Cabernet, Syrah, Nero d’Avola and Merlot) especially for those produced in Partinico, Camporeale and Monreale territories.

The western territory has always been suited to the cultivation of wine grapes for its soft and calcareous terroir and the help of the sea breeze, The first island’s wineries were born in these areas, some of them have preserved the ancient historic cellars as precious jewels to visit. In the province of Trapani, more than half of the grapes on the island are grown. Of particular interest are some wines produced in Erice, such as Alcamo Doc. In Marsala there is the famous homonymous wine, with a long and troubled history and today produced by the best companies using only Grillo.

Finally, the fourth Sicilian area is Favignana and Pantelleria islands where some of the best sweet wines in Italy are produced and made from dried grapes; such as Pantelleria Zibibbo, raised on the typical terracing of the splendid Mediterranean island.

Sicily wine tours – Our selection of the best wineries in Sicily to visit

Sicily has a long history of wine production thanks to its fertile land and warm climate of Southern Italy. But over the past 20 years, Sicily has well and truly earned its place as one of the top Italian regions for wine production .

Sicily is now home to some of the favorite wines of top sommeliers from around the world and Sicilian wineries and vineyards are becoming tourist attractions that discerning travelers do not want to miss.

Italy’s largest island not only produces fantastic wine but also manages to offer a wide variety, from the famous and traditional e.g. Marsala, to the contemporary and experimental wines produced by some of the wineries in this list.

While you can find fantastic wineries across the island, our favorites have to be those produced on Mt. Etna , Europe’s most active volcano that characterizes the unique landscape of Eastern Sicily. We think a visit to one of Mt. Etna’s wineries is one of the most special experiences we offer our guests.

In this list you will find a selection of our favourite wineries in Sicily , all adding something remarkable to the wine culture.

All those mentioned can be visited as part of the special wine and food tour we offer our guests, and can be tailored to suit your interests. Many of those mentioned can also be used for unique events and special occasions .

Let us know what you had in mind! Our team of Sicily experts takes delight in delivering events and experiences to remember.

Whether you are looking to plan a special occasion dinner, a wedding celebration, or a party to remember, holding an event in a Sicilian vineyard can be a highly tailored and memorable experience.

Contact us for detailed information about the events we can plan or custom-made tours and itineraries we can realise for our guests.

La vendemmia (grape harvest)

The grape harvest in Sicily ( vendemmia ) happens during September and October , and it is one of the most beautiful times of year in Sicily as the vines are full of fruit and ripe for picking. The grapes in Sicily have been ripening throughout the year, soaking up every drop of the Sicilian sun!

Now its time for the next phase: wineries across the island are picking the plump fruits, and depending on the size of the vineyards, this harvesting process can take between a day to a week.

The harvesting dates vary across the island depending on the location and conditions of the vineyard (such as altitude and soil type), but on Etna, it typically takes place in the last 2 weeks of September .

Vineyard at Mt. Etna Sicily

Best wineries to visit in Sicily

Most wine lovers who come to experience the wine of the island will be looking to discover the Etna D.O.C as part of their journey. The D.O.C (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is a label used to classify and protect Italy’s most important territories.

Being given this label, Etna has been recognized as one of those special areas. The vines that surround the base of the volcano are hardy to say the least!

They are over one hundred years old and have survived hundreds of eruptions, big and small, and endless showering of dust, ash, and even lava.

It’s the earthiness and mineral-rich qualities of the soil here that give Etna wines their uniqueness. Parco dell’Etna is a particularly noteworthy site as it has been a UNESCO site since 2013.

That means the site is given special protections and is managed closely so that the area is able to flourish to its highest potential.

Let’s find out the best wineries in Sicily and ones we like to take our guests for experiencing our local, and world-famous, wine.

Cottanera winery (Mount Etna)

At the realm of the Cottanera winery is Mariangela Cambria , a woman who has worked with the Etna territory and succeeded in producing one of the best wines available and standing out above many competitors in the region.

Women play an integral role in the running of Cottanera; alongside Mariangela there is a team of 25 women who do the manual work and harvest the grape; still a rather rare setup in the largely male-dominated industry of winemaking.

This winery is located on the northern side of Mt. Etna, close by the medieval hilltop town of Castiglione di Sicilia.

Cottanera Winery Sicily with Etna

Tenute di Fessina winery

Upon taking the role as owner of Tenute di Fessina in 2007, Silvia Maestrelli pledged to create “a place of beauty, between earth and spirit”.

The winery develops Etna D.O.C wines and provides hospitality that is an ode to the heritage of their territory.

There are seven rooms on-site, all of which pay homage to the role they once played in the historical use of the land.

For example, you could stay in the Cannedda room which was once used by farmers to deposit the grapes to be crushed.

Now it has been transformed into a charming room of understated elegance, where you can enjoy a special getaway in a vineyard setting with views of mighty Etna.

The vineyards of Tenute di Fessina are poised 675 metres above sea level, with the estate situated in the small town of Rovittello .

During a tour of Fessina, you will discover the seven hectares of mainly Nerello Mascalese , Nerello Cappuccio grapes , along with a smaller amount of the Carricante and Minella types.

They are found tucked away in an amphitheater that coincidentally provides the ideal hospitality.

Inevitably, at the Tenuta di Fessina, guests are educated about the preservation of the century-old vines, the ancient stones, and the ashes of the volcano that gives the product its earthy and unique qualities.

Tenuta di Fessina Winery

Pietra Dolce winery (Mount Etna)

The Pietra Dolce winery stands out for the eco-friendly approach it has taken to wine production. It is a boutique-sized winery run by brothers Michele and Mario Faro , who are considered experts of the Etna wine region.

The pair have gained a great reputation for their fusion of ancient methods with modern technology for a sustainable approach.

They work with native grapes and pre-Phylloxera vineyards that are around one hundred years old.

The owners pride themselves on remaining true to the essence of the Etna area that they inject into every stage of production and are evident to the taste buds in the final product.

For those whose passion for wine is paired with an affinity for modern architecture and design , an experience at this winery will be particularly appreciated.

Pietra Dolce’s contribution to the Sicily wine scene has been recognized with numerous awards including receiving Gambero Rosso’s “ 2016 Red Wine of the Year ” for its product Vigna Barbagalli. During a special visit to Pietra Dolce, you can taste it right at the source!

Barone di Villagrande winery and wine resort (Mount Etna)

The Villagrande wine resort has a long history, having been cultivating vineyards on Etna since the 18th century. In fact, it is the oldest winery on Etna , and over the years they have sought to perfect their craft.

A visit to the wine resort gives an opportunity to eat in the on-site restaurant where you can sample the wines with accompanying flavours from Etna and discover the most optimal food pairings.

By checking in and staying at the Barone di Villagrande resort , you can spend a night or two surrounded by forests and vineyards, accompanied with views up to Mt. Etna and down towards the bay of Taormina .

This is a chance to truly immerse your senses in the world of Etna wine production.

Sicily grapes ready for harvest

Palmento Costanzo winery (Mount Etna)

Hosted in a renovated building dating back to 1700, the Palmento Costanzo winery is one of the oldest in Sicily.

This is an Etna winery; set in the UNESCO-protected Parco dell’Etna, specifically the small village Contrada Santo Spirito , which itself is worth visiting for its beauty.

Palmento Costanzo prides itself on its offer to bring people together over their passions for wine and the Etna region.

Part of what sets them apart is their dedication to organic practices and manual cultivation methods. An example of its quality products is the Mofete Rosso , a popular red wine made from the native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, picked from vines of thirty years old.

A visit to Palmento Costanzo will enable wine-lovers to explore scenic vineyards , learn about the soil and production methods, and of course taste the final products paired with local cheeses and cured meats.

Donnafugata winery

Donnafugata is one of the most famous wineries in Sicily , and has played a big role in carving out the status of Sicily on the international wine scene.

The Donnafugata brand has numerous wineries around Sicily, and it has gained a fashionable reputation.

This winery recently collaborated with Dolce & Gabbana , creating an elegant Sicilian rose wine that represents the elegance that the luxury fashion house and the Donnafugata estate have in common.

Donnafugata owns wineries across multiple territories, namely Marsala , Pantelleria , Etna and Vittoria , each producing its own unique blends and varieties.

A visit to these locations will allow you to gain insight into how conditions and production varies in different corners of Sicily. The experts at the Donnaguata wineries will welcome you and share their knowledge with passion.-

These are just a few of our favourite wineries in Sicily . Whether you are a wine-lover looking to take an exclusive winery tour or to hold an event in a remarkable location , our knowledge of the island means we can suggest just the right place!

The 12 Best Wineries in Sicily to Visit in 2024

sicily wine tours

In 1885, French author Guy de Maupassant wrote that “Sicily is the land of oranges, of flowering soil whose air, in spring, is all perfume .” Perfectly capturing the alluring romance of Sicily, de Maupassant too acknowledged the intoxicating effect of its colored history, describing the island as a “ strange and divine museum of architecture” .

To this day, de Maupassant’s scribblings remain true: Sicily is still the land of oranges, flowers, perfumes, and masterpieces in baroque. For me, however, Sicily’s romance continues far beyond that. It is the land with a sun and people equally radiant, a land where golden beaches meet sapphire seas, a land of remarkable landscapes, exquisite food, and wonderous wines.

As someone with a true love for wine, and whose travel itineraries always include a winery a visit or two (or twelve), I’ve written this article to share with you the best wineries in Sicily to visit in 2024.

An island which moves hearts, souls, and the pens of poets, Sicily is a place impossible not to be love- struck by. With this list of Sicily’s best wineries, you’ll have the opportunity to make an even deeper connection with its lands, people, traditions, and identity, all by simply raising a glass.

The Best Wineries in Sicily

Whether at the foot of a volcano in Sicily’s East, in the rolling hills near its Western seafront, or on a tiny island off its Southern coast, you’ll find incredible Sicilian wineries offering authentic, unique, and unforgettable experiences. In fact, Sicily is one of Italy’s top destinations for wine lovers , and it’s easy to see why after visiting!

Below are 12 of the best of these wineries, twelve wineries which each capture a unique piece of Sicily that they can’t wait to share with you!

So, let’s get started!

sicily wine tours

Benanti is found at the foot of the stunning Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. The grandeur of this landscape offers a unique environment for growing grapes, with vines planted as high as 3900ft above sea level, rooted in complex volcanic soils ever refreshed by recurring eruptions.

In the late 1800s, Giuseppe Benanti began to experiment with making wine on the volcano, but it wasn’t until 1990 that the first Benanti wines were bottled for commercial sale. Now, Benanti has solidified itself as one of the best wineries in Sicily, and an icon of Etna winemaking.

Most of Benanti’s wines fall into the ‘Etna Rosso (red)’ and ‘Etna Bianco (white)’ DOC labels. These are wines made predominantly from Sicilan native varieties Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, respectively. Expressing each of Etna’s slopes through these incredibly communicative varieties, Benanti also uses them to produce delightful rosé and traditional method sparkling wines.

Benanti offers a range of experiences to visitors, all including a guided tour of the vineyards and cellar followed by a wine tasting accompanied by locally sourced, Michelin-quality food pairings. Experiences start at €80 per person with the ‘Selezione Benanti’, a tasting of 5 of Benanti’s best wines paired with snacks. For an extra €40, you can upgrade to a full lunch. Benanti’s estate is both traditional and dazzlingly luxurious, so you may like to dress for the occasion.

2. Frank Cornelissen

Frank Cornelissen’s winery is located on the Northern side of Etna, nestled between the foot of the volcano and the fascinating lava-formed river of Alcantara. The northern valley considered Etna’s best region for producing Etna Rosso wines, it is a place for both remarkable reds and spectacular sights.

Frank Cornelissen’s approach to winemaking is all about letting Etna speak. Accepting that man cannot understand the full complexity of nature and its interactions, he does not try to exercise control over them, avoiding almost all treatments in both the vineyard and winery. The result is a range of wines that are bright and dynamic, with a true sense of place.

Frank is famed for his exceptional single vineyard Etna Rosso red wines made from 100% Nerello Mascalese: a noble variety which has been compared to both Pinot noir and Nebbiolo. These wines characterized best by the land on which they’re grown, Frank shows his imagination best through his other red, rosé, and white wines crafted through the blending of a wide spectrum of Sicilian native varieties.

One of Sicily’s best wineries to visit, Frank Cornelissen welcomes punters with a guided tour of the vineyard and cellar, followed by a tasting of four or five wines, with the range depending on the experience booked through his website. With a less commercial approach, the cellar door at Frank’s winery is really just a door to the cellar, rather than to a swanky, white-clothed tasting room. There’s no

need wear your best clothes or fragrance, in fact, Frank warns visitors not to wear perfume at all, so not to distract from the fantastic aromas bursting from the glasses poured.

3. Girolamo Russo

Just a three-minute walk from the cellar of Frank Cornelissen is that of Girolamo Russo, another of Sicily’s best wineries located in the Northern valley of Etna.

Girolamo’s early work on Etna reborn by his son, Giuseppe, in 2005, Girolamo Russo’s vineyards are now a mix of old bush-trained and younger trellis-trained vines, contributing to wines that are equally traditional and contemporary. Giuseppe managing his family estate organically, he pays respect to both its tradition and its land, giving them space to speak through the glass.

Girolamo Russo produces top-tier Etna Rosso wines from multiple pockets of Etna’s slopes, often blending Nerello Mascalese with a small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio, which offers a softness and aromas of cherry and rose to the wine. In addition, Girolamo Russo produces great Etna Bianco wines, pairing the fresh, citrusy, and high-acid Carricante with Cattaratto and other native varieties which contribute complexity. Girolamo Russo also produces a delectable 100% Nerello Mascalese rosé wine, perfect under the hot Sicilian sun.

Certainly one of the best wineries in Sicily to visit, Girolamo Russo are generous in their hospitality offerings, with all experiences including a guided tour of the vineyard and cellar, and a tasting accompanied by bread and olive oil produced on the estate. Visits start at €30 per person with the ‘Visit to Feudo’ experience including a tasting of five wines. For a more comprehensive tasting, Girolamo Russo offers the ‘Le Contrade’ and ‘The Etna According to Girolamo Russo’ experiences, including up to nine wines and a selection of local meats and cheeses.

4. Occhipinti

sicily wine tours

Occhipinti is the estate of phenom winemaker Arianna Occhipinti, found in the region of Vittoria in Sicily’s South-East. Specifically, Occhipinti is located in ‘Cerasuolo di Vittoria’, Sicily’s only winemaking region labelled as a DOCG, indicating its upmost quality. Here, the Sicilan native varieties Nero d’Avola and Frappato reign supreme.

Nero d’Avola produces bold, red wines with tonnes of body and tannin in synchrony with zippy acidity and luscious aromas of red and black fruit. Frappato, on the other hand, is light in body and tannin, with

a complex bouquet of red berries, pomegranate, and spice. In Vittoria, winemakers such as Arianna often play with blends of Nero d’Avola and Frappato to form red wines that are balanced, complex, and 100% Sicily.

With great respect for the island’s biodiversity, Occhipinti is another of the best wineries in Sicily managing things organically. In the cellar, Arianna continues her philosophy of minimal intervention, using wild yeasts for fermentation and adding just a tiny bit of preserving sulfur to the wines before bottling. All of them a mirror of where they’re produced, Arianna’s single variety Nero d’Avola and Frappato wines, as well as her red and white blends, are often referred to as a benchmark for both Sicilian and natural winemaking.

Visits to Occhipinti’s cellar can be reserved through their website or by phone (Arianna speaks exceptional English) and are available year-round. The Occhipinti experience is casual and homely, including a tour of the vineyard and cellar, a tasting of select wines, and an opportunity to try the olives, oils, and herbs (on top of bruschetta) also produced on the estate.

Founded in 1980 by three friends including Arianna Occhipinti’s uncle, Giusto, COS is an acronym formed by the first letters of each of their surnames. As well as an acronym, COS is one of the best wineries in Sicily.

COS has planted vineyards widely throughout the chalk and red sand soils of Vittoria, producing a range of red and white wine styles from its multiple sub regions. Paying homage to the history of winemaking, COS employs ancient traditional techniques to produce its highly sought-after wines. These techniques include organic and biodynamic grape growing, as well as spontaneous fermentation (fermentation using wild yeasts already on the grape skins), often taking place in neutral clay vessels (called amphorae) buried in the ground.

The result of this work are wines that speak only of the land on which they’re made, rather than of any human interference. Within their range of 13 wines, you’ll find that more than half are Nero d’Avola, Frappato, or blends of the two. In addition, you’ll find crispy whites made from Italian natives Grecanico and Insolia, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a traditional method sparkling, and Muscat wines made in both a dry, orange style, and more traditionally as a sweet wine.

If you’re interested in visiting this refreshingly passionate winery during your time in Sicily, COS requests that you make a reservation over the phone. Tastings start at €30 per person and include a guided tour of their fascinating vineyards and cellar, followed by a tasting of both red and white wine. An amazingly beautiful piece of architecture, the COS winery is certainly a must-see, especially for those looking to return home with photos sure to make any wine or travel fan jealous.

6. Terre di Noto

A winery incredibly proud of the region they call home, Terre di Noto translates simply to “Lands of Noto”. Just North-East of Vittoria, Noto is a land of beautiful beaches, flamingo-filled wetlands and enchanting baroque art and architecture. It’s also a land of vines, with a diverse range of varieties planted throughout its gentle slopes, most importantly Nero d’Avola and Moscato Bianco (or white Muscat).

Terre di Noto’s winery has been a part of Noto since its founding in 1989. The man behind Terre di Noto is Nino Di Marco, striving through his work at the winery to express both Noto’s lands and the uniqueness of Sicilian native varieties through modern, technical winemaking. Certifying their vineyards as organic in 2018, Terre di Noto is another of the best wineries in Sicily joining the movement towards more sustainable winemaking.

In addition to single-variety Nero d’Avola red wines and Moscato Bianco whites made in both dry and semi-sweet styles, Terre di Noto produces a range of exciting cuvée (blended) wines. Merging Sicilian natives with popular international varieties, these blends include a Chardonnay/Muscat, a Chardonnay/Grillo/Insolia, two Nero d’Avola/Syrah/Merlot blends and luxurious prosecco-method sparkling wines made in both rosé and white styles.

Certainly one of the best wineries in Sicily to visit, Terre di Noto has a unique range of experiences to offer its guests, all at great prices. Tastings including a guided tour of the cellar and vineyards range between €25 and €50 per person, with the more expensive option being a unique opportunity to taste any four labels of your choice. In addition, Terre di Noto offers a picnic experience for just €30 per person, where you’re invited to stay nestled between the estate’s vines and olive trees for as long as you want, enjoying a bottle of Terre di Noto wine and a range of local delicacies hand-delivered in a basket.

7. Riofavara

Just down the road from Terre di Noto’s cellar, Riofavara offers the perfect opportunity for a double- header of winery visits in Noto. Riofavara is found on the outskirts of the town of Ispica, where a visit to the breathtaking baroque square and cathedral at the ‘Loggiato del Sinatra’ makes for a truly unforgettable Sicilan experience.

Founded by the Padova family in 1920, Riofavara is a product of more than 100 years of vine growing. Assured in 1993 that their estate was among the best vineyard land in the region, Riofavara has been producing wine under their own label ever since. Building a modern winery and converting their vineyard management to organic, Riofavara has quickly established themselves as one of the best wineries in Sicily, producing wines that pay respect to Sicily’s tradition, land, and typical varieties.

All crafted using Sicilian natives, Riofavara’s wines include Nero d’Avola reds and rosés, Moscato white wines made in dry, sweet, and sparkling styles, as well as a very special white cuvée formed with multiple varieties.

Known for their hospitality, Riofavara is definitely one of the best wineries in Sicily to visit, especially during the summer months in which you can book in for a tasting and dinner overlooking the Sicilian sunset. There aren’t many things more romantic than that! All year round, other tastings and tour experiences (including a vineyard picnic option) can be arranged through their website. Tastings start at €40 per person, including 5 wines.

Planeta is one of the largest premium wine producers in Sicily, with its estate spread across five of the island’s best growing regions: Etna, Noto, Menfi, Vittoria, and Capo Milazzo. Helping to keep your itinerary flexible, Planeta offers hospitality experiences at three of their wineries, Etna, Noto, and Menfi. Home to their original winery established in the 1980s, Planeta’s Menfi estate is easily accessible from Palermo, just an hour’s drive to the South.

Planeta provides local and overseas wine lovers with an overarching impression of what Sicilian wine is, sharing through their wines a wide range of landscapes, soils, and climates. At the heart of their activity throughout all their properties lies the philosophy of environmental care.

Found in their range of sustainably produced wines from around the island are all matter of reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines crafted from Sicilian, Italian, and international varieties. With something for everyone, Planeta is one of the best wineries in Sicily to visit regardless of your personal preferences.

With more than 10 tasting experiences to choose from across their Etna, Noto, and Menfi wineries, your selection depends on where you are, your budget, and which region’s wines you’d most like to taste. Their most basic tasting options far from basic, they include a winery tour, four wines, three olive oils, snacks, and lunch! Experiences start at €55 per person and are a guaranteed win for a luxurious day out in Sicily.

9. Quattrocieli

Like Planeta’s original cellar in Menfi, Quattrocieli is located in the west of Sicily, just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Palermo. Quattrocieli’s home is in Alcamo, a wine region of rolling hills which stretch gently towards the seaside town of ‘Castellammare del Golfo’. This town, whose name translates to English as “Sea Fortress on the Gulf”, is a place where beaches of golden sand are sheltered by the medieval stone walls which once protected the island.

Compared to many of Sicily’s wine regions steeped in history, Alcamo is relatively young. Quattrocieli was established only recently, in 2015. Founded by a brother and sister team, they strive to realize their father’s never captured dream: to produce a wine that could represent Sicily and its place in the world. So not to interrupt the relationship between this place and their wines, Quattrocieli manage their land 100% organically.

In Quattrocieli’s range of organic, sustainably produced wines you’ll find red, rosé, and white styles all produced using single varieties. These varieties include Alcamo’s prized white grape, Catarratto, the strikingly fragrant Insolia, the boisterous Nero d’Avola, as well as Syrah made in both a bold red and delicate rosé style.

Quattrocieli are playful with the experiences that they offer their visitors, with punters able to choose between a relaxing vineyard picnic experience, a tasting experience including the opportunity to cork and label your own bottle of Catarratto, or the ‘create your blend’ experience, where a winemaker guides you through the creation of your own cuveé. All experiences include a tour, Sicilian snacks, and start at just €30 per person.

10. Donnafugata

Donnafugata another of Sicily’s larger producers, they have five estates dotted throughout the region, in Marsala, Contessa Entellina, Etna, Vittoria, and Pantelleria. Donnafugata welcomes visitors to all these locations.

A winery that truly encapsulates the essence of Sicily, Donnafugata promotes through their wines a care for Sicily’s land, people, and culture. Just looking at Donnafugata’s beautiful labels bursting with color and depictions of ethereal feminine figures unbreakably connected with the earth, you’ll understand that Donnafugata is a winery with humble roots, but a grand vision to express them.

Donnafugata’s creative expression not limited to what’s on the outside of the bottle, you’ll find a diverse range of wine styles in Donnafugata’s catalogue, including sumptuous reds, refreshing whites, luxurious rosés, sparkling wines, and some of the best sweet wines in Italy. Made on Pantelleria, a small island to the South-West of Sicily’s mainland, Donnfugata’s globally renowned sweet wines are made with the luscious and sumptuously perfumed Zibibbo grape.

Hospitality is something that Donnafugata specializes in. Pick any one of their five locations and it will make the list of Sicily’s best wineries to visit. You’ll find on their website all the special experiences that they have to offer, from vineyard and cellar tours, to brunch, lunch and dinner tastings, to more unique tastings including the ‘under the stars’ experience on Pantelleria, and the ‘wine and music’ experience in Marsala.

11. Solidea

Solidea is located on the island of Pantelleria. As well as incredible wines and remarkable views of the Tunisian coast, Pantelleria offers some of the best swimming spots in the world. Cool off in the crystal- clear waters of the Mediterranean, or indulge in one of Pantelleria’s natural hot springs or thermal mud baths.

A small, family-run winery, Solidea farms just 4 hectares of vines on the island, most of which are Pantelleria’s prized variety: Zibibbo (known in English as Muscat of Alexandria). Pantelleria and Zibibbo as familiar to the husband-and-wife team at Solidea as are the backs of their hands, they offer some of the world’s best examples of this incredible grape variety in multiple wine styles.

Solidea are most famed for their ‘Passito di Pantelleria’, a sweet wine made traditionally by sun drying Zibibbo grapes in order to concentrate their sugars, as well as their vibrant aromas of orange marmalade, raisin, and nuts. In addition to sweet wines, you’ll find in Solidea’s catalogue dry red and white wines

including ‘Ìlios Bianco’ a lively and refreshing Zibibbo white wine bursting with tropical fruit and floral aromas.

Truly experts at what they do, Solidea are one of the best wineries in Sicily to visit, offering their visitors a unique look into Sicilian winemaking of the past. Solidea’s cellar is open only during the summer months, when they welcome visitors for authentic and intimate tasting experiences priced at just €25 per person. The visit includes a cellar tour, delicious homemade snacks, and a tasting of four wines, including a ‘Passito di Pantelleria’.

12. Marco De Bartoli

Marco De Bartoli is named after the man who founded it in the 1980s. A boisterous man passionate about Sicilian grape varieties and traditional winemaking methods, Marco De Bartoli is now succeeded by his three children, all of which have a hand in the winery’s current operations.

Marco De Bartoli, the winery, has cellars in both Marsala and Pantelleria. Marsala known best for fortified wines derived from a blend of white varities, and Pantelleria known best for sweet wines made from Zibibbo, Marco De Bartoli challenges these expectations with the creative use of a small range of Sicilian native varieties.

Marco De Bartoli respecting the age-old traditions proven to work in the creation of exceptional wines, they are proud custodians of historical techniques such as the ‘Solera’ stacked barrel system for fortified wine ageing famously invented by the Spaniards for Sherry creation; a sight to behold!

In Marco De Bartoli’s catalogue you’ll find fortified wines, traditional method sparkling wines, and expressive dry table wines made from 100% Marsala Grillo, red wines and sparkling rosé wines made from 100% Pignatello, and Pantelleria wines made from 100% Zibibbo in both lusciously sweet and dry aromatic styles.

A 100% Marco De Bartoli experience can be arranged at either their Marsala or Pantelleria location, depending on whether you prefer to stay on the mainland, or adventure to the island of sweet wine via ferry or flight. Either way, Marco De Bartoli is with no doubt one of the best wineries in Sicily to visit, with a guided vineyard and cellar tour included at both locations, followed by a casual tasting of at least four wines. Tastings starting at just €15 per person, they offer some of the best ‘bang for buck’ found anywhere on the island.

California has an incredible list of hiking trails. We also have some other epic trails to explore — and on this one, all roads lead to cheese. “It’s no stretch to say that California has set the stage for much of America’s artisan cheese landscape,” says James Beard Award-Winning author and cheese educator Laura Werlin .

Here is the best way for cheese snobs (and those who aspire to be) to explore some of the Bay Area’s best cheeses.

Saturday 11 a.m. Visit a milking parlor and loafing barn

750 Chileno Valley Road, Petaluma

sicily wine tours

Follow the trail tucked between rolling green hills leading to Achadinha (osh-a-deen-ah), a family-run farm that’s been making hard and soft cheeses in Petaluma for three generations. Farm tours and tastings are typically conducted by owner Donna Pachec, who also leads cheese-making classes. Tours run about 90 minutes and include a jaunt up to the milking parlor, as well as a visit to see “the girls,” which is how the Pacheco family refers to their cows. If the girls are feeling social, you may even get to pet them before heading off to sample some cheese.

Tours are offered most Saturdays, and tickets can be purchased in advance on the farm website for $40 per adult or $10-$20 for children. Kids under age 5 are free.

2 p.m. Grab a bite and a drink

2 West Spain Street, Sonoma

The Sonoma Cheese Factory is a one-stop spot for cheeses, smoked meats, and wines. The factory has a cheesemonger, a pitmaster who handles all the barbecue meats and sandwiches, and a sommelier who can pour you the perfect glass to pair with your smoked tri-tip and wedge of gouda.

3:30 p.m. Taste Sonoma’s take on Parmesan

315 Second Street East, Sonoma

sicily wine tours

In the early 1920s, Tom Vella came to Sonoma from Sicily to join his brother in the cheese-making business. Several generations later, Vella Cheese is still a landmark. The retail store is located in front of the manufacturing room, and visitors will find old family photos, numerous cheese awards, and a letter from Cary Grant, who used to purchase Vella cheese regularly. At the center of it all is a cheese case, where experts can guide you through a tasting. While Vella makes a variety of cheeses, the flagship is a Dry Monterey Jack, a California version of Italian Parmesan.

5:00 p.m. Discover your next cheese love

112 Washington Street, Petaluma

Grab a glass of wine and taste some local cheeses at the Petaluma Cheese Shop (part of Barber Winery), where the goal is to make cheeses less intimidating and fun to taste. With that goal in mind, the cheese menu consists of eight kinds of cheese (and cheese accompaniments) that change weekly. “We want to help you discover your new cheese love,” owner Michael Barber says.

7:00 pm Kick back with an original cowgirl

5215 Lakeville Hwy, Petaluma

sicily wine tours

Sue Conley, a doyenne of California cheese, stepped away from Cowgirl Creamery several years ago. But before leaving, she purchased a farm, and now, Silver Penny takes visitors back to California farming’s grassroots. “There was, and still is, conflict between agriculturists and environmentalists,” Conley says, “and I hoped to bridge the divide by hosting retreats and seminars on ecological farming.” There are several casitas where guests can crash for the night while learning about agriculture and the environment. Stays include a walking tour of the farm, an introduction to the Sonoma/Marin food shed, as well as a welcome basket of coffee, wine, honey, and cheese.

Sunday 7 a.m. Grab coffee and a bagel

212 Western Ave, Petaluma

The best way to gear up for another day of cheese tasting is with a toasted coconut latte and a freshly milled sourdough bagel from the Bagel Mill , which offers New York-style bagels and stellar cream cheese. For a bit of spice, try the jalapeno spread, or for a sweeter start, slather on the seasonal roasted strawberry. Check out the roasted garlic and za’atar varieties if your travel companions are game — or if you’re looking to ward off a few vampires.

9 a.m. Strike cheese gold

14390 Valley Ford Road, Valley Ford

“If you visit Valley Ford Cheese Company , you might be inclined to think that the term Golden State was invented to describe their cheese,” cheese expert Laura Werlin says. “Such is the color of their flagship Estero Gold Reserve.” Valley Ford Cheese Company opened its first storefront in 2019. The retail space and restaurant now showcase all the company’s cheeses and offer a menu centered around cheese. It changes often, but expect to find roasted potatoes and broccoli with Estero Gold and Hwy1 Fontina cheese sauce; a wedge salad with gorgonzola, bacon, and pickled onions; and a warm French dip sandwich. The company also makes soft-serve ice cream that’s not to be missed.

11 a.m. Become one with the herd and flock

5488 Middle Road, Tomales

sicily wine tours

It took Tamara Hicks and David Jablons several years to restore their rundown farm, but in 2007 Toluma Farms opened its doors and became a sheep and goat dairy. With a strong sense of teamwork, the farm has grown substantially and now produces eight seasonal kinds of cheese including Kenne, a soft bloomy rind goat cheese, and Bossy, a “soft cow cheese in honor of bossy females everywhere who get shit done,” as the company describes on its website.

Tours are offered on the first Sunday of each month. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the farm website and cost $40 per adult or $5 per child; children under 5 are free.

2 p.m. Get a taste of the Alps

5300 Nicasio Valley Road, Nicasio

An hour north of San Francisco lies the family-run Nicasio Cheese Company . It’s an organic farmstead that produces cheeses using traditional recipes from the owner’s ancestral village in Switzerland. Guided cheese tastings are offered twice a week. If you miss the tours, you can still stop by the creamery, which is open daily. Be sure to take home the Foggy Morning and Nicasio Reserve.

Green countryside near the medieval town of Volterra (province of Pisa) Tuscany

Pisa attracts more than five million tourists yearly to see its world-famous Leaning Tower. But few realize this proverbial “half-day city” is the gateway to Terre di Pisa, one of Italy's newest and most exciting DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wine appellations.

This up-and-coming wine region offers an unforgettable experience for wine lovers who want to travel slowly and escape the crowds pervasive in many Italian cities.

Imagine rolling Tuscan hills, vineyards stretching toward the horizon, and passionate winemakers eager to share their craft and explain how their wines are shaped by the contours of the land and centuries of history.

Throughout the province, wine lovers can sip regional wines and savor local food products and dishes, creating a truly Tuscan culinary adventure.

The Wines Of Terre di Pisa: A World of Varietals Awaits

Logo of Terre di Pisa

The Terre di Pisa DOC appellation was established in 2011, attesting to the unique character of the wines.

In 2018, 10 producers formed the Terre di Pisa Wine Consortium to raise awareness and promote the quality of these regional wines; the number has now grown to 19 in 2024.

Apple Loop iPhone 16 Pro Details iOS 18 s AI Plans iPhone 14 Pro Special Offer

‘suicide squad: kill the justice league’ ends its weekly updates, a promising new update on silo season 2 on apple tv plus.

Terre di Pisa wines offer a symphony of flavors. The carefully controlled Terre di Pisa DOC appellation includes Terre di Pisa Bianco, Terre di Pisa Vermentino, Terre di Pisa Rosato, Terre di Pisa Rosso, and Terre di Pisa Sangiovese.

Visitors can explore reds like Sangiovese, the king grape of the region, or whites like Vermentino. They can also indulge in rosės and sparkling wines.

Most high-quality wines with the Terre di Pisa DOC label are reds with at least 95% Sangiovese grapes. Winemakers rely on these and other indigenous grapes to produce interesting blends with international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

This unique hyper-local terroir is blessed with sandy soil rich in limestone and clay. Millions of years ago, the land was part of the ocean, so seeing whole seashells as you walk among the vineyards is common. Some winemakers even find marine fossils under the soil dating back to this heritage.

The hills and valleys of Terre di Pisa are conducive to viniculture because of the area’s temperate climate, which has warm days, cool nights, moderate rainfall, and ocean breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea year-round. The wines offer minerality and salinity.

Beyond the Leaning Tower: Getting There and Where To Stay

Map of the provinces of Tuscany

Pisa is both the name of this province and its better-known capital city. While wine (along with the tilted tower) takes center stage, Terre di Pisa offers many diverse experiences.

Tourists can meander the two-lane roads traversing the countryside by car and discover this less-traveled province’s cultural, historical, and epicurean riches.

Terre di Pisa wineries are committed to sustainable practices, ensuring the land thrives for future generations. So, it’s not surprising that their farm stays offer a chance to unplug, reconnect with nature, and experience the simple pleasures of rural life.

Instead of large cookie-cutter hotels, many wineries offer rustic Tuscan farm-like accommodations. These small agriturismos can serve as a base for visiting some of the more than 40 wineries in the region or excursions to interesting towns and small villages nearby.

San Miniato, perched on three small hills, is best known for its white truffles, celebrated at a National White Truffle Festival held each November. Pontedera is the birthplace of the iconic Vespa motor scooter and the locale of its historic Piaggio factory and museum. The colorful art city of Peccioli was named the most beautiful village ( borgo) in Italy in 2024.

A few more of the many places worthy of visits include the architecturally stunning landscape of Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, the hometown of tenor Andrea Bocelli; the Roman Theater and Baths in Volterra; and the sandy beaches of Marina di Pisa.

10 Terre di Pisa Wineries That Host Guests

Vineyards of Merlot, Cabernet, and Sangiovese on the Pisan hills of Peccioli produce red, white, and ... [+] rosé wines.

Rural accommodations like those in the province of Pisa are generally restored rather than remodeled to preserve their Tuscan history and ambiance.

Coupled with direct sales from their wine shops, farm stays help provide a reliable income stream when nature compromises crops and creates unique opportunities for guests.

Here is a sampling of some Terre di Pisa wineries that host guests. In addition to finding a sense of place on-site, wine tourists typically visit other wineries and interesting towns nearby.

Badia di Morrona

The 600-acre Badia di Morrona estate, located amidst sloping hills between Terricciola and Casciana Terme, is one of the oldest wineries in Tuscany. It offers tours, tastings of its wines and EVO olive oil (with light lunch), and visits to its historic Benedictine abbey, the summer residence of the Bishops of Volterra in the late 15th century.

Each of six fully-equipped restored farmhouses, divided into villas and apartments, has swimming pools and is surrounded by greenery.

Castelvecchio Socita’Agricola

Located in the town of Terricciola in the Pisan hills, the family-run Castelvecchio Societa’Agricola has 10 hectares of vineyards managed by women. The winery offers cellar visits and tastings paired with local cold cuts, cheeses, bruschetta, and other seasonal products, as well as lunch or dinner of local Tuscan cuisine.

Visitors can arrange stays in either a restored barn or a portion of the original farmhouse restored by the family that offers views of the hills.

Fattoria Varramista

The heart of the 400-acre Fattoria di Varramista in Montopoli is an ancient villa (purchased by the Piaggio-Agnelli family in 1953) once the residence of Enrico Piaggio, famous for the Vespa brand. Varramista offers tours of the villa, the Italian garden, the cellars and vineyards, and tastings of the estate’s wine and EVO olive oil accompanied by Tuscan products.

Three farmhouses on the estate have private pools surrounded by olive groves; another is in the park near the manor. Guests at these residences can also hire mountain bikes, participate in cooking classes, and hire private chefs and/or drivers.

Villa Cosmiana

Sited on a gentle hill in Peccioli, this 17th-century, neoclassical Villa Cosmiana became part of the Antinori family estate in 1783. Abandoned in 1933, its new owners recently meticulously restored it to preserve its rich historical and artistic legacy. An English park with Italianate gardens surrounds the villa, along with 15 vineyards on 11 hectares. Wine tastings begin with a tour of the villa and its winemaking facilities before a light lunch.

The estate has three suites in the villa and four in the Fattoria (farm) that can be booked with a tasting dinner or discovery day.

Villa Saletta

Although wine production on this 1,760-acre working estate can be traced back to 980 AD, Villa Saletta is a modern, boutique winery. Located in a medieval village with ancient farmhouses in Palaia, the family owners lovingly restored a property that had fallen into ruin. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, visits to the winery and cantina, or a guided tour of the magnificent borgo.

Three villas have been renovated using traditional techniques, materials from the region, and modern luxury. The largest can accommodate up to 14 guests.

Pieve de’ Pitti

Located in the hills of Terricola, Pieve de’ Pitti is named after the Florentine Pitti family, which owned the estate until the end of the 17th century. The winery offers tours of the cellar and vineyards, wine tasting, and creative cooking courses.

Guests can stay in one of the five rooms of the Villa (a single large farmhouse surrounded by vineyards) or in one of three self-catering apartments in the Il Poggetto country house. The property also hosts weddings and special occasion parties.

Tenuta di Ghizzano

Tenuta di Ghizzano is an organic and biodynamic farm of 280 hectares, 18 of which are vineyards. The winery is located in the town of Ghizzano, a small frazione of Peccioli with a population of just over 300 people. The estate has vineyards, olive trees, cereal crops, woods, and poplar groves and hosts a range of “experiences,” from tastings to tours to personalized visits.

The two-story Villa Ginevra, a contemporary farmhouse immersed in the countryside, is a beautifully appointed four-bedroom residence filled with art and antiques. It offers a balcony overlooking the scenic hills.

Le Palaie Farm is located on a 150-hectare estate in Peccioli surrounding a 17th-century manor house. In addition to olive groves, arable land has been set aside to preserve the fauna and insects that help repopulate the environment. The winery also hosts special events, including weddings, tastings, and cellar visits.

The recently renovated manor house has seven apartments of different sizes and accommodations in another four independent houses.

Fattoria di Fibbiano

Fattoria Fibbiano is located in Terricola between the hills of Pisa and Volterra. The Cantoni family purchased the farm in 1997. The house's foundation was built in 1707 and is surrounded by vineyards, some over 100 years old. The property is home to three generations of this family. In addition to tastings, tours of the vineyards, picnics, Vespa adventures, and cooking lessons, guests learn about the architectural features of the historic farm. During the harvest, guests can experience olive and grape picking.

Apartments are located in the same building where the family lives. A communal vaulted living room and beautiful pool with panoramic views bring people together for conversation.

Podere la Chiesa

Podere La Chiesa is an ultra-contemporary winery that might be mistaken for an art museum. Located in Terricciola, the winery is an architectural masterpiece surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. The one million-year-old soil is rich in limestone, sand, and clay. The winery offers guided tours and tastings. In September, guests can participate in the 50-year-old Grape and Wine Festival held in Terricciola.

The winery is close to the little town of Casanova, which has a small BnB and Michelin-starred restaurant.

Don’t Forget the Leaning Tower

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is located in Piazza dei Miracoli, along with the Cathedral and ... [+] Baptistery.

Visitors to Terre di Pisa will be treated to an unforgettable experience that blends rolling hills with exceptional wines and warm hospitality.

But a half-day dedicated to the iconic Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli is a must for any visitor.

Getting There

Getting to Terre di Pisa is convenient. International and domestic travelers can arrive through Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei Airport, named after the famous scientist born in Pisa).

Visitors also can arrive at the Pisa Centrale station from Florence via high-speed train in about 45 minutes. Auto rentals are available both at the airport and train station.

So Close to Sicily, So Far From the Crowds

Pantelleria is a seductive idyll of mud baths, romantic ruins and secluded swimming coves. It’s also rocky and wind-whipped, making it quieter than its big-sister island next door.

For years I had been hearing about the island of Pantelleria, the craggy, hard-to-get-to Eden with middle-of-nowhere tranquillity that sits 89 miles southwest of the island of Sicily and about 50 miles east of Tunisia. Luca Guadagnino’s 2015 film “ A Bigger Splash ” painted a seductive idyll of mud baths, romantic ruins and secluded swimming coves. Celebrities like Madonna, Sting and Julia Roberts visited, drawn to the striking, Africa-meets-Italy ambience, along with Giorgio Armani, a part-time resident since 1980. The fact that nobody was impressed by them added to the allure.

“We always tell newbies that you will either love it or hate it,” said the fashion stylist Sciascia Gambaccini, who has owned a vacation home on the island for 33 years. “This is not Capri. We don’t have Chanel. There aren’t fancy resort hotels. There is constant wind. The beauty is in the slow pace and the wild landscape.”

In a black-and-white photograph, the intersection of two narrow stone streets is shown, with a bell tower in the distance.

The absence of white-sand beaches is worn like a badge of honor. Locals schlep their own gear to the jagged lava rock perches that line the coast and cannonball into the turquoise sea. The old-fashioned pasticceria and dingy olive stalls in Pantelleria Town, bestow it with “Godfather”-like charm.

And the wind, well, it’s part of the package. As locals will tell you, nature is in charge here, and when a sirocco hits, you have to go with the flow.

A fragrant, otherworldly landscape

Thousands of years ago, farmers on rocky, wind-whipped, fresh-water-free Pantelleria figured out how to cultivate crops.

They built terraced walls from porous lava rock that blocked the wind and irrigated the fruits and vegetables with dew. These steep terraces undulate throughout the island, lending a primordial texture to the bluffs of lava rock. Ubiquitous lava stone dwellings called dammusi also lend to the otherworldly landscape.

Pantelleria’s topography completely shifts as you move from one part of the 32-square-mile island to another. As I zipped along the narrow main road and unpaved side routes, the scenery moved from lush caldera-formed valleys to barren plateaus tufted in Mediterranean scrub to hilltop villages festooned in pink bougainvillea, and up to woodsy mountains. Flowering cactuses and caper bushes with purple stamens grow with abandon, as do herbs. When the wind blows, it smells of wild oregano.

Reminders of Pantelleria’s ancient roots are everywhere.

In Mursia, the bar Sesiventi overlooks Bronze Age burial monuments. In Nikà, I thought of the Romans as I plopped into the burbling thermal baths that they carved into the stone. Pantelleria Town is dominated by a castle begun in the Byzantine era, Norman additions and a bell tower built later by the Spanish.

That Pantescan vibe

The island is not easy to reach. The Danish airline DAT , the Spanish carrier Volotea and the Italian ITA Airways fly there from within Italy, but only on certain days. After the high season, which runs from the end of May through the end of September, it becomes more challenging with one-off flights or an overnight ferry option from Trapani on the main island of Sicily. (Pantelleria is part of the region of Sicily.)

I flew from Palermo last June, and after the jolt of landing on a volcanic speck in the sea, I felt the siren song of slackerdom. It was hot. And the wind/cicadas combo was like an island lullaby. My late-afternoon arrival coincided with aperitivo hour, which has its own format in Pantelleria. People climb to the roofs and sit on pillows to watch the sun slip into the sea. I experienced this tranquil rooftop scene, or anti-scene, at different restaurants, hotels and homes throughout my week on the island.

Of note, there was no blaring music. Nature was the main event, and it was treated with reverence. Tesla? Mercedes? Land Rover? Not a chance. Everyone drives beat-up cars, the Fiat Panda being the most popular. When a friend picked me up in this toylike contraption, I learned why. Their tiny size and light weight make it simple to wedge into tight parking spots and navigate oncoming traffic on single-lane roads, a maneuver that often involves pulling over into bushes or onto a narrow precipice.

While there may not be beach days, there are certainly swim days that unfold upon lava outcroppings. Balata dei Turchi was my favorite, partly because it was such an adventure to get to this bay beneath approximately 800-foot lava cliffs. It involved negotiating steep, unpaved terrain in my friend’s decrepit Panda, bouncing over boulders as plumes of dust clouded the windshield. After parking, it was a 10-minute descent down the rocks on foot. We placed towels on the black rocks and plunged into the sea. A thick rope affixed to the rocks helped swimmers pull themselves back up.

Some days, the swim was spontaneous. After a wine-soused lunch at La Vela in the Scauri port, I ditched my clothes (I learned to tuck a swimsuit into my tote) and waded past sea urchins into the crystal clear sea. Around me, sunbathers were reading (real books) and children snorkeled and played (real) games. It felt like 1985.

A boat tour offers the best perspective of the island. But with the wind, one had been tricky to schedule. Finally, the gusts receded, and I set out with a lithe, Speedo-clad skipper to explore the lava-formed grottoes accessible only by sea. We motored into the Grotta delle Sirene and then Sataria , the sponge-encrusted grotto where legend has it that Odysseus was bewitched by the sea nymph Calypso. We got up close to Arco dell’Elefante , a lava arch that resembles an elephant drinking water. Then we anchored in front of the caves of Punta Spadillo for a panini lunch before diving into the green-blue, parrotfish-rich sea. We saw one only other boat, which departed as we arrived.

Vino e capperi

If people know Pantelleria, chances are they will mention its two most famous exports: passito, a sweet wine made with the zibibbo grape, and capers. It is no easy feat to produce wine on an arid, fresh-water-free island. Vines were trained to grow horizontally to avoid the wind. To self-irrigate, they were planted in hollows so dew could drip into the roots at night. This centuries-old practice is recognized by UNESCO as an “intangible cultural heritage.”

All of the island’s 22 winemakers produce their own version of amber-hued passito, and each winemaker speaks poetically of how harsh conditions yield this “vino da meditazione,” or meditation wine, to be sipped slowly after dinner. “When you drink it, you can feel the people and land behind the flavor,” said Antonio Rallo, the fifth-generation co-owner of Donnafugata vineyards and president of the Sicilia DOC wine consortium. “It could never be made anywhere else besides this island.”

Sun, wind and mineral-rich volcanic soil are also the secret to Pantelleria’s capers, whose exceptional sweetness makes them prized throughout the gastronomic world. As most vineyards grow grapes and capers, wine tastings include foods that showcase both flavors.

Emanuela Bonomo , a rare female winemaker here, explained how the wind created a concentrated flavor of lava minerality and salt in both her produce and small-batch wines. At the vineyard she served fried zucchini with mint and oregano; caponata; and cheese topped with dried zibibbo grapes alongside fig jam, and huge lemons, sliced and drizzled with oil. Everything was layered with aromatic capers. Ms. Bonomo also wanted to make sure that I understood that everything was “fatto a mano”: She and every other farmer still harvest by hand.

At Mr. Rallo’s vineyard, guests can walk past centuries-old olive trees and gardens and through a natural amphitheater of stone walls to examine the gnarled, low-to-the-ground vines and caper bushes. There are multiple tasting options, the most exciting being an under-the-stars dinner that pairs wines with classic Pantescan dishes.

Wellness, volcanic-style

On top of inspiring the rugged terrain, geothermal activity has fashioned the island into a spa playground with hot springs and natural saunas. Near Mr. Armani’s compound in the fishing village of Gadír is a small marina with tubs hewed into the stone. I followed the locals’ lead and submerged myself in a slightly slimy tub (the water is between 104 and 131 degrees Fahrenheit) for about six minutes, then cooled off in the adjacent harbor. Never mind the egg smell. The sulfur and mineral content is why the waters are effective at alleviating aches and pains.

On my boat day, I swam to the Sataria cave, which has three algae-laced hot spring holes with water temperatures progressing from tepid to medium hot. The island’s largest hot spring, Specchio di Venere (Mirror of Venus), is an aquamarine-colored lake that sits in a volcanic crater bordered by mountains and vineyards. On top of gurgling 104 degree water , the draw is a therapeutic (and stinky) mud that bathers slather all over their bodies. Does it work? Well, the heat rash on my arms and chest stopped itching, and my travel-tight back relaxed.

The springs were lovely, but I was most excited to detox in a natural stone sauna tucked into a mountain grotto. I trekked up the western slope of Montagna Grande for about 10 minutes and knew that I had arrived at Benikulá Cave , or Bagno Asciutto, when I saw puffs of steam filter out of a slit in the rocks, and then an older man emerge in a very slinky Speedo. Inside, nine people sat on piping hot stones and the ground (bring a towel!), shvitzing in vapors that can reach 104 degrees. Afterward, everyone relaxed on shaded benches with sweeping views of the Piana di Monastero valley.

Thanks to volcanic cliffs and verdant valleys, there is excellent hiking to counteract the effects of pasta and wine: 80 percent of the island is a national park, Parco Nazionale dell’Isola di Pantelleria, with 63 miles of paths across the Mediterranean scrubland, and up to the forests on Monte Gibele and Montagna Grande.

At every turn, I kept expecting the tourist scrum I had seen in Rome earlier in the month. But it never happened. Not at Dispensa Pantesca , an aperitivo hot spot; not at La Nicchia or Il Principe e il Pirata , the “it” restaurants; and not at Allevolte , a fashion boutique stocked with the kinds of silk caftans and crisply tailored linen trousers that travelers dream about nabbing on an Italian holiday.

If Sikelia , my chic, 20-room hotel, had been in Amalfi, dressed-to-the-nines guests would have been jockeying for selfies amid the fireball sunsets. Not here. “This island is bewitching. But it’s not for everyone,” said the hotel’s owner, Giulia Pazienza Gelmetti. “Getting here is challenging. Getting to the sea is challenging. It attracts a specific type of person. For those who get it, the payoff is huge.”
