Washington’s Northwest Trek Wildlife Park Now Offers a Drive-Thru Safari. So We Tried It Out.

Play reindeer games..

drive through safari washington state

As the twin metal gates slid open and the line of SUVs crossed over the cattle guard, I thought of Jurassic Park .

A caravan of vehicles, winding through a primordial sanctuary where herds of immense, ancient creatures grazed? Hold onto your butts. The cars crept along, a line of brake lights going 5 mph through flower stalks as tall as your head. Each driver peered into the woods for a flicker of movement, a change in the light.

And then we were ambushed from all sides—by reindeer.

Caribou, technically. Then bison, Roosevelt elk, mountain goats and bighorn sheep—all grazing on 435 acres of freshly mowed pasture and fern-strewn forest in the shadow of Mount Rainier.

The ungulates are residents of Northwest Trek Wildlife Park (11610 Trek Drive E, Eatonville, Wash., 360-832-6117, nwtrek.org) , funded by the citizens of Pierce County, Wash., about a three-hour drive from Portland.

Typically, the park offers open-air Jeep tours. In late May, it pivoted to motorcades ($80 per vehicle, reservations only; most of July is booked, so aim for August): a dozen cars and trucks, each load of visitors socially distanced, the tour guide piped in over the car stereo.

I'm familiar with drive-thru zoos from a Florida youth misspent at Lion Country Safari. Most states have their own variation on the car safari (Oregon is no exception, with giraffes off I-5 in Douglas County). But the vibe at Northwest Trek is different: more Ansel Adams than Doc Antle, in no small part because the animals are Pacific Northwest species. There's no substitute for the awe inspired by the sight of a herd of elk grazing in the glacial valley of a national park—but we're all making do these days, and watching a bison bull saunter by your car still carried a thrill. (I never did catch a glimpse of a moose, but they're in the compound, too.)

And then there were the caribou. I'd never gotten close to one before, and they were a delight: cow-eyed and molting winter fuzz from their backs and antlers, the tendons in their feet clicking rhythmically as they ambled toward visitors. They wandered between vehicles, sometimes bringing the caravan to a halt by joining the procession themselves. When the year began, I did not expect my first traffic jam to be caused by an arctic deer herd. Finally: a pleasant surprise.

Adventure Awaits At Olympic Game Farm In Washington

Olympic Game Farm in Sequim, Washington, offers a drive-through wildlife experience where visitors can see and interact with various animals.

Written by

Washington is home to some seriously impressive wildlife, most of which will never be seen by a human being. But if you happen to have a family full of animal lovers, there is a way you can get up-close-and-personal with both native wildlife and exotic mammals. Sequim's Olympic Game Farm is a drive through wildlife exhibit, meaning the animals can (and do) come right up to your vehicle.

The Olympic Game Farm was originally designed as a holding facility for the animals of Disney Studios.

alt

From the 1950s to the 1970s, the animal actors were housed and cared for here. But in 1972, after Roy Disney had passed away, the owners decided to care for the animals themselves and open the park to the public.

These days, the farm is a pleasant drive through experience that offers an up-close-and-personal glance at plenty of wildlife.

alt

Your self-guided drive tour will take you through 84 acres of terrain filled with animals, many of which are not shy.

You'll see everything from llamas and elk to tigers and zebra here.

alt

All proceeds from the farm's tourism go toward feeding and caring for the animals.

You're welcome to interact with and even feed the animals, but all guests are expected to follow the rules.

alt

The only thing guests are allowed to feed the animals is wheat or whole grain bread. You can bring your own (it will be inspected) or purchase it at the farm. And don't worry, the animals are all fed a healthy, balanced diet daily, so they aren't relying on the bread for sustenance.

Olympic Game Farm won the Wildlife Conservation of the Year award in 1996 from the Washington Association of Conservation Districts.

alt

Some of their animals still make appearances in films on occasion, but most of them prefer to live lazy lives on the farm.

Olympic Game Farm is open all year, but they do close on major holidays and when local weather conditions are harsh.

alt

They're open daily from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Weekends are the busiest times, so try to go as early as possible (or stick to weekdays).

Admission to the farm is $17 for adults, $14 for seniors and children from 6-14.

alt

Children 5 and under are always free. Also, although it typically only takes about an hour to drive through the farm, tickets are good for the entire day of purchase.

Address: 1423 Ward Road, Sequim, WA, 98382

This Washington Dining Experience Has Been Called One of the Best Restaurants in the U.S.

Want to visit one of the best restaurants in Washington? Check out Woodinville's Herbfarm, an acclaimed farm-to-table spot and an Evergreen State institution.

To complement its famous beauty, Washington produces some of the nation's highest-quality ingredients. With active fisheries and sprawling farmland , it's no wonder our state draws chefs from far and wide, each excited to experiment with our regional flavors . All this talent has cultivated an acclaimed culinary scene, one I'm only too lucky to write about. Still, of all these diverse eateries, The Herbfarm in Woodinville is considered by many nationwide to be one of Washington's best restaurants.

alt

Like many established farm-to-table restaurants in Washington, The Herbfarm emerged from a deep-rooted family tradition. After purchasing property in the 1970s, Bill and Lola Zimmerman began a small-scale operation selling their produce locally. The next generation brought new ideas to the family business, with their son, Ron, and his wife, Carrie, debuting the first iteration of the now-famous eatery in 1986. The couple's budding restaurant (which operated for a time from the family garage) saw considerable success until it closed in the late nineties following a fire. It reopened in 2001 and quickly became one of the Pacific Northwest's most hallowed restaurants. Today, the kitchen is run by chefs Chris Weber and Jack Gingrich. Together, they honor the legacy of the Zimmerman family, who remain deeply involved in The Herbfarm's vision.

alt

An AAA 5 Diamond destination with accolades from various publications, including Food & Wine and The Seattle Times , dinner at The Herbfarm is a bucket-list reservation that's well worth the price tag. Despite the cost, expect a dress code of "zhuzhed casual." While you're welcome to show up and out in your formal best, any outfit that makes a gesture toward polish will be well-regarded, in keeping with the laidback PNW custom. Though every restaurant sees regulars, most diners arrive to celebrate milestones or as part of a culinary pilgrimage. The result is a dining room that's as warmly colored by laughter as it is by candlelight and wood. It's the perfect spot to savor the multi-course menu and a selection of wines you'll dream of later.

If you fancy yourself a foodie and aspire to experience Washington's best restaurants, Woodinville's The Herbfarm is an essential stop. With its deeply felt connection to the outdoors, this renowned eatery turns the Evergreen State's outdoorsy spirit into bold flavor. Their ever-changing menu pays tribute to the land and seasons that have sustained The Herbfarm dream since the 1970s, and— for one night— you'll be part of that decades-old love song.

Here Are The 7 Absolute Best Pumpkin Patches In Washington To Enjoy In 2024

Discover seven charming and sincere pumpkin patches in Washington that prioritize nostalgic fall activities.

The leaves are changing color and that means fall is here! Since I watched "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" as a kid, I've searched for the best pumpkin patch in Washington. Linus explains the criteria best: "Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere." So, when considering the best pumpkin patches in Washington, my taste favors places where pumpkins remain the stars of the show. Carnival themes are out. The nostalgic pleasures of hay bale rides, making friends with farm animals, and appreciating swaying fields of corn are in. For patches where sentiment is valued over spectacle, check out these seven farms that would be Linus-approved. Here are some of the best pumpkin patches in Washington.

1. Thompson's Farm & Market - Naches, Washington

alt

Family-owned since 1898, Thompson's Farm has made a name for itself as one of the best pumpkin patches near Yakima. This working farm sells its wares year-round from a quaint stand abutting Old Naches Highway. Every weekend in October, Thompson's permits the public to explore its fields and select their very own pumpkins.

2. The Pomeroy Living History Farm - Yacolt, Washington

alt

The only entry on this list to be included on the National Register of Historic Places, The Pomeroy Farm is a local landmark and must-visit for history buffs and pumpkin enthusiasts alike. The story of the Pomeroys, who moved to the land in July of 1910, is one of perseverance. Nowadays, in addition to being open every weekend of October for pumpkin picking, the farm hosts workshops on food preservation and woodworking.

3. Schilter Family Farm - Olympia, Washington

alt

I have a soft spot for Schilter's . This charming family farm was my childhood pumpkin patch and I can't recommend it highly enough to families. Autumn revelers of all ages can tempt themselves with house-made fudge at the farmstand, make the acquaintance of farm animals, wander through a challenging corn maze, and more! The time to show up is between September 25 and October 31, 2024. It is closed on Tuesdays.

4. Wilderbee Farm - Port Townsend, Washington

alt

It's Wilderbee Farms' simplicity that makes it one of my favorite patches to visit every year. Under ten minutes from the gorgeous Fort Worden State Park, this pared-back gem specializes in organic pumpkins. Though you won't find a food stand or pumpkin cannon here, Wilderbee offers diverting nature trails and the opportunity to feed its resident flock of sheep. When the farm opens the first week of October, adult guests can sip mead made from scratch from 12 to 5 o'clock each weekend.

5. Fall City Farms - Fall City, Washington

alt

For many patches on this list, agro-tourism is a fairly recent enterprise. Fall City Farms is unique in that its sole mission has always been to connect local families with their food and help them make memories in the great outdoors. The farm's owners might've started off selling corn and pumpkins from a garage in 1991, but Fall City Farm is now located off the beautiful State Route 203. You'll love its picturesque, rural landscape. Explore the fields on weekends from September 30 to October 29, 2024.

6. Swans Trail Farms - Snohomish, Washington

alt

The Krause family, who've owned Swans Trail Farms since 1984, were destined to steward one of the most popular pumpkin patches near Seattle. In 1997, after being named Snohomish County's Dairy Family of the Year, the family celebrated with an open house and invited the public to their idyllic land for a corn maze, live music, and ice cream. Over 4,000 people attended the festivities, and the rest, as they say, is history . Starting September 21 and going until October 31, 2024, wander the 50 acres of pumpkins, indulge in mouth-wateringly fresh apple cider donuts, and make friends with adorable barnyard critters.

7. Creek House Farm - Port Orchard, Washington

alt

Any dedicated pumpkin patch peruser knows that farms get busy leading up to Halloween. For visitors who'd prefer to avoid the crowds, check out Creek House . This stunning farm raises over 20 varieties of organic, heirloom pumpkins and winter squash. Best of all, because the farm is only open by appointment, your experience will be intimate and peaceful. (Editor's Note: This farm is taking a break from fall festivities this year. Check in next year as it may resume.)

If you love wholesome pumpkin patches in Washington that Charlie Brown's Linus would approve of, check out one of these seven farms. What are your favorites? Tell us in the comments what you like about them. Can't choose? Pack up the car and embark on an autumn-themed road trip:

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

Northwest Trek is a 725-acre wildlife park tucked away in the forest near Mt. Rainier. Unlike any play area in the Puget Sound region, it is designed to stimulate imaginations, encourage exploration, connect folks with wildlife and immerse kids in nature.

Tram tours are temporarily unavailable but there are three exciting ways to explore the park.

A Woman takes a Photo at agle Passage

The park entry ticket gives access to the core habitat area. Beautiful winding paved paths lead you to grizzly and black bears foraging under trees, wolverines running over logs, gray wolves, cougar, lynx, and more, plus an immersive bald eagle exhibit. The nature-inspired Kids Trek playground and Zip Wild ziplines add to the fun! Bring a picnic or eat at the café.

Drive Wild

Get eye-to-eye with inquisitive otters. Spot elusive fishers snuggling in their dens. Stare out a lynx or cougar, seldom seen in the wild, and learn how to protect all these species.

drive through safari washington state

The Northwest Trek experience gives you a peek into the lives of native Northwest animals.

Bison cluster in the flat areas, eyeballing cars as they drive by. The caribou and the elk seem close enough to touch. The mix of animals that can be seen from the comfort of your own car is remarkable and the chance to see them in this way is a one-of-a-kind experience. On the Wild Walk path, you get even closer. Excited children will retell their journey for weeks to follow, while adults too will have a story to share.
