About Costa Smeralda Ship 

Costa Smeralda is the flagship of Costa Cruises—it is their largest operating cruise ship and is the fifth-largest in the world. Within its massive 337-meter-long frame are 20 decks, 2612 passenger cabins, 19 restaurants, over a dozen bars and other amenities. It can carry a maximum of 6554 passengers and 164 crew members. Wowza!

Staying true to its Italian heritage, the cruise ships has severals areas that are designed and pay homage to Italy, like the Bel Paese (a type of Italian cheese) and landmarks such as Piazza di Spagna and Trastevere.

Another impressive fact is that the Costa Smeralda cruise ship is environmentally friendly. It runs entirely on liquefied natural gas, which helps improve air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions!

Construction of the ship started on July 4, 2018, by Meyer Turku (a shipbuilding company) and was launched to sea on March 15, 2019. After a series of sea trials, it was handed over to Costa Cruises on December 5, 2019. Costa Smeralda started its inaugural cruise on December 21, 2019.

Excursions & Ports

There are many different fun excursions for each port/destination, from riding a historic train in Mallorca to wine-tasting in Messina to traveling around Barcelona on an electric bike.

My Mediterranean itinerary went from Barcelona to Rome and had dozens of different outings to choose from. And don’t you love it when you pick the right cruise excursion? That’s exactly what happened when our Costa Smeralda ship ported in Palma de Mallorca. I picked an excursion to the Caves of Drach. Have you ever heard of them? They consist of four connected caves that have a length of over 2 miles and depth of 80+ feet. As if that’s not bucket list worthy enough, there was a beautiful concert performed in the depths of the cave where the musicians glided in on lighted rowboats.

Our next port brought me to Sicily. It was my first time there, so it was hard to pick an excursion, but a tour of the pretty little hilltop town of Taormina was the winner.

We walked the cobbled streets peaking into picturesque narrow walkways and cute shops until we reached the ultimate historical gem—the Greek Theater that dates back to the 3rd century BC!

Restaurant and Bars 

Once you get a taste of one of the two dozen restaurants and bars, you will be wishing for more sea days! From a Nutella bar to scoops of Gelato just as good as on the streets of Rome to an authentic Italian pizzeria where the pies are topped with mozzarella made fresh onboard, the tastes of Italy don’t disappoint. Did I mention the Campari bar that’s dedicated to the bitter Italian liqueur?

Though Italian-food centric, the cuisine onboard is also inspired by different regions worldwide and will surely make your tongue dance! Theres a poke bowl station, made-to-order sushi togo that can be enjoyed anywhere on the ship and a teppanyaki restaurant where the chef’s show is just as good as the lobster he put on my plate. Hungry yet?

Entertainment 

You’ll have as much fun as doing shore excursions onboard the Costa Smeralda ship. From watching dazzling live musical shows to zipping down the water slide, there is endless entertainment for all ages!

For the adults, don’t miss trying your luck in the casino, and at my personal favorite game—video roulette (bet on number 19 for me!). You can also lose yourself in music in their Silent Party, wearing headphones that play the songs you choose. 

Definitely pay a visit to the ultra-unique CoDe Museum that celebrates Italian design from the 1930s to today. It includes everything from furniture to fashion.

Cabins 

There are 4 types of cabins you can choose from in Costa Smeralda that will suit your needs: Inside, Ocean View, Balcony, and Suite. All have air conditioning, a flat-screen satellite TV, WiFi, hairdryers, a safe, 24-hour room service, and world-class comfort. Plus, I was super impressed by the roomy bathroom that had lots of storage!

My Premium Balcony let me enjoy the breeze while having a more open view of the sea through the balcony.  Waking up to different Instagrammable sights and places is definitely a perk for me!

Sports and Wellness

Your mind and body will thank you for pampering yourself with Costa Smeralda’s variety of wellness facilities. These include a swimming pool and jacuzzi, relaxing massages, beauty treatments, and so much more.

For two truly bucket list worthy experiences relax in one of their suspended chairs and visit the snow room that is literally filled with snow!

There is also a gym and a jogging track for those who want to work up a nice sweat while on vacation. 

For some people, going on a trip around the world is not complete without taking a souvenir with you back home. Costa Smeralda – Balcony Cabin Photo Guide and Honest Review

If you are taking a cruise on the Costa Smeralda you may be wondering if a balcony cabin is a good option for you. I’ve just disembarked a cruise onboard the Costa Smeralda and I stayed in a balcony cabin on deck 15.

We stayed in the balcony cabin 15180, and this review is based on this cabin.

Below is a photo of our balcony cabin. When you first arrive there may be a plastic mat on the bed for you to put your suitcase on when you unpack, but it is then removed by the cabin steward once you have done so.

Changing The Bed Configuration

We were cruising as a couple, and the cabin was made up with a double bed.

If you are sharing with a friend or family member and need twin beds, you can speak to your room steward and ask them to split the bed into two singles.

You can sometimes select twin beds when booking, but it isn’t uncommon for this message not to get through to the ship/ cabin steward.

On all cruise lines, apart from Disney Cruise Line, the beds are able to be configured as twins or a double bed.

Balcony Cabin Cabin Size

The size of Costa Smeralda’s balcony cabins are slightly larger than that of most cruise ships.

The majority of cruise ship balcony cabins measure roughly between 180 and 200 sq ft – our balcony cabin was 205 sq ft  – so a good size!

The cabin is made up of the following:

• A double bed
• Two small shelves by the bed
• Drawers and Closet Space
• Two Mirrors – one over the desk, one in the wardrobe
• Bin/Trash Can

This balcony cabin felt comfortable and spacious, and we were very happy in there

Cabin Design

The Costa Smeralda was built in 2019 and is quite modern in design.

Modern colours, design and soft furnishings were all around – in both the public spaces and the cabins.

(I was generally very impressed by the “upmarket feel” of the soft furnishings onboard, I felt that they had gone to a lot of effort.)

The artwork onboard was often a quirky take on Italian Renaissance paintings. Probably not to everyone’s taste but it’s impossible to have artwork that suits everybody. We liked them !

The cabin has two mirrors which I liked, one over the desk and a full-length one on the back of the wardrobe door

I LOVED The Beds

The beds were incredibly comfortable and we all slept well on the cruise. We were cruising with family and we all agreed that the beds were very comfortable.

The bedding felt of high quality and the pillows were very soft.

When we first arrived, there was only one pillow per person on the bed. We prefer to have two pillows each, so we spoke to the cabin steward, and when we returned later in the day, two more pillows had arrived. Very efficient.

The cabin steward came in and cleaned the room once a day, in the morning.

When we first arrived there was a welcome pack on the bed, giving us all the information that we needed. We also had a paper daily schedule .

Costa have an App that you can use onboard if you prefer. You don’t need to buy the ship’s Wi-Fi package to use it.

There was plenty of room under the bed so we stored our suitcases there.

Which Plug Sockets are There In the Balcony Cabins On The Costa Smeralda?

I n Costa Smeralda’s balcony cabins, there is a European plug socket with 2 USB’s by the desk area. There is also a European plug on one side of the bed, but no USB’s. Other cabin grades may have extra sockets.

On many modern cruise ships, you’ll find USB sockets by the beds, it would have been handier to have that – or at least a socket on each side of the bed.

There is no kettle, or tea and coffee-making facilities in the cabin. This is very typical of American and European cruise lines.

British cruise lines, and sometimes cruise lines sailing out of Great Britain (like MSC ) often supply them, as they know how much the British appreciate being able to make a cup of tea!

The TV showed a variety of shows in multiple languages. There were quite a few news channels, we were also able to watch some documentaries.

The large flat-screen TV was on the wall at the foot of the bed. It was perfect for watching TV in bed – if you could find something of interes t

Was There Enough Storage?

There were plenty of shelves and hanging space in the balcony cabin – but in my opinion, not enough drawers!

There were only 2 drawers in the cabin which were in the desk. There were no drawers at all in the wardrobe area – nowhere to put your socks or underwear!

The Bathroom was an Interesting Design!

The bathroom was designed very well to make the most of the available space. It had a toilet, sink and quite a large shower area. (This was far bigger than the standard, quadrant-type ship shower cubicles.)

The slightly odd thing about it was there was a glass window/panel in the shower itself .

This could be covered over with a curtain on the cabin side, if you didn’t wish to see your cabin mate in the shower or using the bathroom .

I think the idea of this was to get more natural light into the bathroom.

In actual fact, we just found it a little annoying. If you went into the bathroom during the night and switched the light on, the light around the curtain disturbed the person still in bed sleeping.

The shower itself did have a proper glass shower door, not a clingy shower curtain .

There was lots of storage in the bathroom. There were a couple of shelves in the corner, a whole bank of open shelves just inside the door, and extra storage below the sink area.

I personally loved the black and white tiled floor, and the large shower. Everything was always very clean and functioned well.

There was a silver pump bottle in the shower and another by the sink that I can only assume was a generic soap/body wash. It wasn’t labelled, so your guess is as good as mine – It smelt perfectly fine .

Often on cruise ships, you’ll find that the water from the shower leaks into the main bathroom, the bathroom floor did get a little wet, but it was never a problem.

Our Cabin was in the Middle of the ship, Near The top

The location of our cabin was in the middle of deck 15, just below the dome on deck 16.

Normally if you are towards the top of the ship, you are close to the buffet. On Costa Smeralda, the main buffet is on deck 8.

Quite a long way to go if you wanted something to eat. The main dining room for us was way down on deck 5 – ten floors away .

There is a “family restaurant” for those with children on deck 16, but we never went in there.

The sea was a little rough at times, and I did feel some movement in the cabin – although not enough to worry me or make me feel sick.

The “White Night Party” is held under the dome directly above this cabin. Unfortunately, this kept me awake!

Themed parties start around 11pm and carry on until around 1am in the morning.

Although many like to stay up late on cruises, I am not usually up partying late into the night!

Would I Recommend This Cabin?

It was a clean, comfortable room with a good-sized balcony.

It is very typical of many other cruise ship balcony cabins. The décor was modern and, like the whole vessel, had a “new ship” feeling about it. I would definitely recommend the cabin.

Things That I Wasn’t So Keen On

If I was choosing a cabin on this ship again, I would probably choose a balcony cabin lower down.

I would then be closer to the buffet and I would not have had any noise from the dome above.

I was not overly keen on the glass window in the shower although it wasn’t a problem.

Day 02: Kom Ombo - Edfu & ON

Breakfast will be served on board your ship. After that you will join your Egyptologist tour guide to visit one of the most wonderful temples in Egypt, Temple of Kom Ombo , where the two gods Sobek & Haroeris were worshipped for a while. Get back to your ship and enjoy your lunch on the sun deck, watching the unique landscape of the great river Nile. Afternoon, enjoy chariot riding to Temple of Horus in Edfu, which is considered to be one of the most well preserved temples in Egypt. After finishing your tour, you will be transferred back to your ship. Afternoon, you willmenjoy relaxing on board your ship. Dinner will be served on board. At night Egyptian Folkloric Show party will be operated by staff on board.

Day 03: Luxor West Bank - Luxor ON

Breakfast on the Nile cruise. After that you will start your magical tour in Thebes, the sacred land by exploring the west bank of Luxor including Valley of the Kings , which considers as the royal cemetery of the Theban kings and rulers of ancient Egypt, and the place where our Pharaohs were buried. After that, you will proceed to visit Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir El Bahari. This temple is considered as one of the most wonderful examples of the Architecture in ancient Egypt, because it was totally carved inside the mountain. At the end of the tour you will visit Colossi of Memnon , which is belonging to king Amenhotep III. After that you will return to your ship to have your lunch. Afternoon, free at leisure. Day 04: Check Out - Luxor East Bank

Check out after breakfast (at 08:00 AM). After that you will enjoy your tour discovering the East Bank of Luxor, including the most wonderful Karnak Temples Complex , which is considered to be the biggest complex construction in the world covering an area of a hundred. Finish your lovely tour in Temple of Luxor , built by one of the kings of the 12th dynasty & completed by the well know king Ramses II. After finishing your day tour, you will be transferred by private A-C van to your location in Luxor (where our services will be ended).

05 Days / 04 Nights Program (Every Monday)

Day 01: luxor east bank - luxor on.

Upon arrival at Luxor airport or station, our representative will transfer you to your Nile Cruise by a private A/C van. Embarkation before 12:00 PM. Afternoon, you will discover the East bank of Luxor including Karnak Temples Complex , which are the largest structures ever build in the history of the mankind. The principal building is that of god Amun Ra, since it was considered the house of god on the earth, the earlier structure date back to the middle kingdom, but there are some references which refer to the earlier buildings as old as the 3rd dynasty. Later on, you will proceed to visit Temple of Luxor , which was built by one of the kings of the 12th dynasty and completed by the well know king Ramses II. This temple was located in the heart of ancient Thebes and, like Karnak, was dedicated to the main/chief god Amun Re. After finishing your day tour, you will be transferred back to your ship for rest and refresh. At night, Egyptian folkloric show will be operated by the staff. Dinner will be served and overnight in Luxor. Day 02: Luxor West Bank - Sail to Edfu & ON

Day 03: edfu - kom ombo - sail to aswan & on.

Breakfast on board your Nile cruise. Then your tour guide will take you in a mysterious journey to land of secrets. This guided tour of today begins by visiting one of the most wonderful temples in Egypt, Temple of Horus in Edfu, which is considered to be one of the most well preserved temples in Egypt. After that, you will revert back to your ship. Lunch will be served on board during sailing to the city of Kom Ombo.

Afternoon, you will proceed to explore Temple of Kom Ombo, where the two gods Sobek & Haroeris were worshipped for a while. Get back to your ship and enjoy your lunch.

Enjoy the sun deck, watching the unique landscape of the great river Nile. On its banks the ancient Egyptian civilization has been created and flourished.

Dinner meal will be served on board during sailing to the city of Aswan. Late evening arrive to Aswan and overnight.

Day 04: Aswan City Tour - Aswan ON

Breakfast will be served on board your ship. Later on, you will join your Egyptologist tour guide to discover the great city of Aswan, including The High Dam , which has been erected by the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1960 AD to protect Egypt from the Nile flood. After that you will enjoy sailing on the Nile River by a motor boat till reach Agilika Island, where you will visit Temple of Philae , which was erected during the Gaeco-Roman period and was dedicated to goddess Isis (mother of god Horus). Finally you will be escorted to visit one of the marvelous sightseeing in Aswan, The Unfinished Obelisk , which was made out of red granite and was dedicated to god Amun Ra. After finishing your day tour, you will get back to your ship. Lunch will be served on board. Afternoon tea will be served on board. At night free at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Aswan.

Day 05: Disembarkation from cruise - Departure to Cairo

Check out after breakfast. Then our representative will accompany you to Aswan airport - station to take your flight to Cairo (Breakfast) **

Optional Tour: Excursion to Abu Simble temples either by private coach or by domestic flight: you will be met with our English-speaking tour guide in Aswan who will transfer you by private A-C van to Abu Simbel, lies south of Aswan on the western bank of the Nile, 180 miles south of the First Cataract in what was Nubia. The site was known as Meha in ancient times and was first documented in the 18th Dynasty, when Ay and Horemheb had rock-cut chapels hewn in the hills to the south. Upon arrival, you will proceed to visit Abu Simbel Temples, which were built by the well-known king Ramses II. The biggest temple was called as the Great temple. It was built by Ramesses II and being dedicated to the famous god Rahorakhty. While the smaller temple and it was dedicated to king Ramesses II himself and his beautiful wife queen Nefertari. After finishing your day tour, you will drive back toward Aswan. Arrive Aswan and be transferred by private A-C van to your chosen hotel there for check in, rest and refresh or transfer to Aswan airport to catch your domestic flight to Cairo.
