Sightseeing Tours Australia

Cairns Tours

100% Australian Owned & Operated

Best Cairns Tours & Day Trips

Cairns is a vibrant destination that is home to two of Australia’s most iconic natural wonders : the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest . With its tropical climate, laid-back atmosphere, and endless activities and attractions, Cairns is a must-visit for travelers. Our Cairns tours offer the opportunity to explore the amazing array of life on land and underwater, visiting top destinations such as the Atherton Tablelands , Fitzroy Island, and, of course, the Great Barrier Reef. Come discover all that Cairns has to offer!

Cairns Reef Day Tours & Trips

The Great Barrier Reef may be the only living thing visible from space, but to truly experience the beauty of this colourful underwater world, you need to dive in and swim among it! With several day trips on offer to explore the outer reef from Cairns, we’re certain to have the perfect tour for you. All our Cairns reef tours depart daily and include snorkelling and equipment to get you among the sea life.

Whether you are a certified diver or thinking about trying it for the first time, our Great Barrier Reef Deluxe Tour includes a scuba dive to explore deeper underwater. Or join our action-packed Great Barrier Reef Pontoon Adventure for stacks of ways to experience the reef including fish feeding presentations, glass-bottom boats and a semi-submersible. If you don’t feel that a day trip to the reef will be enough, join one of our one- or two-night liveaboard tours to stay overnight on the Great Barrier Reef. Sleep aboard our luxury boat and enjoy two or three days of nothing but snorkelling or diving in one of the most environmentally rich areas in the world.

While our tours to the Great Barrier Reef will take you to snorkel sites in the outer reef, our Green Island and Fitzroy Island tours explore the inner reef. Enjoy a day trip from Cairns to either of these tropical island paradises where you can snorkel off the beach, wander the trails through the rainforest on the island or just relax on the idyllic beaches. The seagrass meadows surrounding the islands are known habitats for turtles, so keep an eye out as you snorkel the tropical waters!

More Sightseeing Tours from Cairns

Not just famous for the reef, Cairns is also well known for the verdant jungles and pristine beaches of the Daintree Rainforest. Wander among the lush tropical rainforest vegetation, spot the native wildlife and soak up the tranquil surrounds of “the most extraordinary place on Earth” (according to none other than Sir David Attenborough). Our one- and two-day tours from Cairns will take you to explore the astonishing scenery of the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation, enjoying guided walks, wild swimming and a chance to spot crocs on a boat cruise down the Daintree River. Stay overnight at Cape Tribulation for free time to further explore this gorgeous area.

For more nature-based adventures, join our one-day Atherton Tablelands tour . Bring your bathers as we go chasing waterfalls at iconic locations including Millaa Millaa Falls and Josephine Falls. Admire the impressive Curtain Fig Tree and keep an eye out for some of Australia’s most elusive native animals including the cassowary, platypus and tree kangaroo.

What should I bring on a Cairns tour?

Almost all our Cairns tours offer the opportunity to swim, so be sure to bring your own swimwear and a towel. We also recommend bringing adequate sun protection. Depending on the weather, you may want to bring a rain jacket and a change of clothes. Check your confirmation email for any specific requirements for your tour.

What should we do if we are running late?

Please ensure you arrive at your meeting point early. Tours run on a tight schedule and cannot wait for latecomers. If you’re running late, please call our office on 1300 661 225 . Unfortunately, if you miss your pickup or boat departure, you will miss your tour with no opportunity for a refund.

Is there parking at Marlin Marina?

Paid parking is available at several locations around the Marlin Marina. The Shangri-La and Hilton hotels offer all day parking for about $15. The Pier Shopping Centre and Cruise Terminal carparks also offer paid parking. Parking doesn’t need to be pre-booked. But please ensure you leave plenty of time to arrive at your meeting point before departure.

What happens if it rains?

You get wet! Cairns is a tropical location with plenty of rain. But that doesn’t mean your tour will be ruined. Storms are usually brief, and your guide knows how to make the most of the weather to offer you the best experience. If it is raining on the day of your tour, bring along a rain jacket and a change of clothes.

Unless it’s unsafe, tours will run regardless of the weather. On the very rare occasions when we do need to cancel a tour for safety reasons, we’ll contact you to offer a change of date. If you can’t travel another day, we’ll process a full refund.

What happens if I want to cancel a Cairns tour?

If you decide to cancel your tour, it will be subject to our cancellation policy . It may be possible to change the date of your tour, subject to availability. If you need to cancel or make any changes to your booking, please contact our reservations team.

Cairns Australia

A Cairns holiday is sometimes a once in a lifetime opportunity (although many visitors to Cairns return again and again) and the tours you choose to do and the sights you choose to see should be a decision that isn't taken lightly. We certainly know and appreciate that holidays are special times and can cost a lot of hard earned money. The last thing one needs whilst travelling are difficulties, especially when they can be avoided. Vacations are for sheer enjoyment, pleasure and to provide long-lasting happy memories.

The visitcairns.com.au website has been operating successfully for over 11 years and is  owned/operated by local Cairns people with local Cairns knowledge; the husband & wife team Heidi & Marty who have lived in the Cairns area for many years.  Heidi and Marty have both worked within the dive industry for a number of years so are experts when it comes to all things scuba diving in Cairns , as they have been on 90% of the  great barrier reef tours from Cairns! So you have come to the right people for expert reef advice!  We are also passionate about the rainforest and explore it regularly ourselves!

We also specialise in Cairns charters , with a new site all about them coming soon.

Cairns, with a population of approximately 160,000 is Australia's 14th largest city and the 5th largest in Queensland. While now predominately a "tourist town" it is classified as a regional centre and supplies many outlying districts. Farming, especially the sugar industry,  and mining are still important industries with a large percentage of the population employed in these fields.

Cairns is surrounded by natural beauty and in fact Cairns, Australia is the only place in the world to have 2 world heritage listed areas side by side. These are of course the  Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest . Any area with one of these destinations on it's doorstep would be well worth visiting but to have 2 it makes Cairns truly special.

Marty and Heidi have lived in the Cairns area for over ten years and both have travelled extensively both around the world and more importantly for you, both know the east coast of Australia like the back of their hands. Both are avid scuba divers, spending any time possible underwater on the Great Barrier Reef. Both also love the outdoors, exploring the area's rainforests and bushland by 4WD, foot and kayak/canoe. There aren't many bushwalks they haven't done or waterholes they haven't swum in. So for help with the hidden gems that only the locals know about, just ask us for assistance. Both are also big on Cairns many adventure sports with both having done multiple bungee jumps and skydives as well as white water rafting, parasailing, hang gliding and just about every other adrenaline activity Cairns has to offer.  Basically there's not much they can't do for you. And if by the small chance they cannot help they will all too happily point you in the direction of someone who can.

So relax and take a look around our site, maybe read our tour reviews in our blog , we're sure you will want to visit Australia and Visitcairns!

Cairns (pronounced ‘cans’) has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a boggy swamp and rollicking goldfields port. As the number-one base for Far North Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, today Cairns heaves under the weight of an ever-growing number of resorts, tour agencies, souvenir shops, backpacker bars and reef boats. This is a tourist town, and unashamedly so – luxury hotel development in 2018 and an increasingly busy cruise-ship port suggest it's only growing busier.

My friend and I went on both the waterfall and cape tribulation tours, and they were amazing!!! We got to see and experience so much in two days. Our tour guide Charlie was so great, he had so much information to share and made the tours fun and engaging for everyone!!

a drawing of a face

An absolute banger of a tour! You will not regret booking with Uncle Brian’s Tours. We had the pleasure of Cousin Rohan and he made a ‘liquid sunshine’ (rainy) day the best day ever - full of energy and positivity. The food and snacks were incredible and so delicious. Thank you so much!

Had Brad as a tour guide who was epic 👌did the two day cape tribbin tour and it was perfect. Really enjoyed the two days from start to finish! Saw a cassowary, snakes, spiders and lots of insects which was pretty cool. Also saw some crocs as well which was pretty awesome.

Was totally awesome experience. Went both tours - one with ‘cousin’ Paul and one with ‘cousin’ Charlie. Had an amazing fun time seeing new places, had lots of good laughs, and had an informative experience at the same time. 10/10 recommend.

Had an absolute amazing day on the Cape trib 1 day tour. Adam was the best tour guide!! Hilarious, very knowledgeable and went above and beyond. Also learnt so many things from him. Thank you Adam for making this tour one to remember!

Did the Cape tribulation tour with Charley. Was absolutely amazing! The best organised tour I have ever done. Charley was a great tour guide, we had a fun group and value for money is also good. Besides the bus+guide, it also includes lunch, ferry and fees and a croc river cruise.

Eye On The Reef - Marine Conservation Program on the Great Barrier Reef

I was on No Limit Adventures' Marine Conservation program "Eye on the Reef" and it was the most fascinating thing I have done so far. I was able to take my Diving certificate and thereafter take part of the great conservation work they are doing on the spectacular Great Barrier Reef. I can highly recommend it to others. It is so interesting and it makes you think a lot about the marine life and how easily it is destroyed. By the way the guys working at No Limit Adventures are the best ever they were our guides in Australia for a month and I simply had the best time of my life and I learned so much

Guide to Cairns

Aboriginal name:  Gimuy (pronounced Gee-moy)

  • When to visit
  • Accessibility

The gateway to Queensland's tropical north, Cairns is a laid-back city best enjoyed outdoors.

The region of Cairns is home to the iconic Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest, but the city of Cairns itself is also a must-visit. You'll find brilliant cafés, bustling markets and plenty of beaches nearby. Relax by a resort pool or spend your days exploring this tropical oasis.

The Gimuy-walubarra yidi are the Traditional Owners of Cairns and the surrounding district.

Today, Dreamtime stories are still woven through both land and sea experiences throughout Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef .

  • Traditional name: Gimuy (pronounced Gee-moy)
  • Indigenous Peoples: Gimuy-walubarra yidi
  • Traditional languages: Yidiny language

Cairns Airport (CNS) is the main gateway to Tropical North Queensland making this the perfect starting point for your tropical holiday.

  • Cairns Airport (CNS) is 5.5km (3.5mi) from the city and services international and domestic arrivals
  • Car hire, taxis, rideshares and transfer services are available to book prior to your arrival, or on the day

The city centre is fairly flat, so getting around is easy, even on foot. However, Cairns offers a wide range of transport options, including a network of buses and taxi services. Unless you are joining an organised tour, car hire is recommended for reaching nearby attractions such as the Daintree Rainforest.

Cairns' weather  is one of the best things about this stunning tropical destination, and there are benefits to visiting any time of the year. Different to Australia’s southern regions, Queensland's north has only two seasons: a summer season and a dry season. While the dry season boasts great weather and even migrating whales, you should expect larger crowds. The summer season is characterised by tropical weather, including summer showers.

  • High season: Dry season (May to October)
  • Low season: Summer season (November to April)
  • Don’t miss:  Taking a dip with dwarf minke whales  (June and July)

Cairns is the perfect hub for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, and you’ll find accessible options for accommodation  and attractions .

  • Arrival: Special assistance is offered at Cairns International Airport for those with visible or hidden disabilities .
  • Getting around: You can organise for a qualified carer to accompany you as a tour companion with Out There Travel Care , and wheelchair-accessible vehicle hire is available with Wheelies Van Rental .
  • Accessible experience highlights: Sail atop the Great Barrier Reef on a Reef Magic catamaran and explore the Daintree Rainforest on wheelchair-friendly trails through Mossman Gorge .
  • Helpful resources: Find itineraries and inspiration for your trip with this accessible travel guide .

How to get to Cairns

Cairns is the main airport for Tropical North Queensland with domestic flights flying to and from most major Australian cities.

There is a train service from Brisbane to Cairns multiple times per week and regular long-distance buses which travel up and down the coast.

Driving is also possible if you enjoy spending time on the road and don't mind long drives.

Getting around in Cairns

The areas in and around Cairns are well signed and easy to navigate. A local bus service is available although your options can be somewhat limited if you are hoping to travel further afield. Taxis and ride-share options are also readily available.

When should I visit Cairns?

Any time of year is a good time to visit Cairns. Summer is hot and humid and perfect for swimming. Spring and Autumn are cooler and the region tends to be quieter. Winter is ideal for those who don't enjoy humid temperatures and the weather is typically good.

If you are visiting between October and May and swimming in the ocean, it is advisable to wear a 'stinger suit' to protect yourself from possible jellyfish stings.

What should I pack for Cairns?

Cairns tends to be a casual place so you can leave your fancy clothes at home. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are a must, even in winter. If you forget any essentials, it is easy to pick up whatever you need in the Cairns CBD.

What should I wear in Cairns?

Cairns is a laid back destination which means casual clothes or active wear are fine to wear during the day. Smart casual is the norm for restaurants including the more upmarket dining spots in town.

What is internet access like in Cairns?

Wi-fi is readily available throughout Cairns. There can be limited or no wi-fi available for a short time when you're on some sections of road in the Atherton Tablelands and other remote spots. There is no wi-fi signal throughout most of Cape Tribulation.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone in Cairns?

Mobile coverage is readily available throughout Cairns. There can be limited or no mobile signal for a short time when you're on some sections of road in the Atherton Tablelands and other remote spots.

There is no mobile signal throughout most of Cape Tribulation.

Where are the best places to go swimming in Cairns?

It is possible to swim at Cairns’ attractive northern beaches such as Palm Cove, Trinity Beach and Kewarra Beach, but don't go swimming in the ocean around the CBD at any time of year. There is a lot of mud when the tide goes out, along with the occasional crocodile. Instead, head for the large man-made Esplanade Lagoon which is safe and free to use.

What is the best way to see the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns?

If you don't want to travel too far or are visiting with young children, day trips to Fitzroy Island or Green Island are a good option. Full and half-day tours to the outer reef depart daily from downtown Cairns, including a First Nations tour with Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel. Overnight liveaboard trips are also available depending on demand.

Bonza enters administration as flights are cancelled across the country amid airline scaling back routes

As passengers scramble to find alternative flights, major news has emerged about the airline’s future.

Budget airline Bonza has entered voluntary administration, leaving travellers stranded across the country.

The airline had already slashed flights across the country with the carrier’s CEO in discussions around the “viability” of the business.

As of Tuesday morning, multiple flights operated by the airline leaving from major airports across the country have been cancelled.

Some of the flights that have been canned include those departing from the Sunshine Coast scheduled to land in Gladstone and Rockhampton. Several that were due to leave from Melbourne airport have also been cancelled.

Hall Chadwick, an accountancy and business advisory firm, has been appointed as administrator.

The company explained to news.com.au that all flights are grounded pending discussions, and customers with bookings from now until May 2 are being told not to go to the airport.

In a statement from the airline’s CEO Tim Jordan, services will be “temporarily suspended” while discussions surrounding the “viability of the business” take place.

“Bonza has temporarily suspended services due to be operated today, as discussions are currently underway regarding the ongoing viability of the business,” Mr Jordan said on Tuesday.

There's mass cancellations across the Bonza network.

In a further statement sent to news.com.au, Mr Burton apologised to customers impacted by the airline’s sudden wave of cancellations.

“We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we are working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian aviation market.”

Following the disruption, rival airlines Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar all stepped in to offer assistance for those in need.

Virgin Australia announced on Tuesday morning that they would assist any passengers in need of a seat or who have been left stranded by the Bonza cancellations.

“We are aware of the temporary suspension of Bonza flights,” the airline posted on X.

“We will immediately support any passengers stranded mid-journey by offering complimentary seats on Virgin Australia-operated flights to the airport nearest to their final planned Bonza destination.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia have stepped in to assist displaced Bonza customers.

“For those Bonza guests at an airport, please see a Virgin Australia customer service representative or call our Guest Contact Centre.”

Qantas and Jetstar offered a similar service, providing flights for the “significant impact” the cancellations have had on passengers.

“For Bonza customers who are due to travel today or who are stuck away from home, Jetstar and Qantas will assist by providing flights at no cost where there are seats available,” the statement read.

However of Bonza’s 36 routes, there are only six overlapping routes with either Jetstar or QantasLink — including Melbourne to the Gold Coast, Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast, Avalon to the Gold Coast, Gold Coast to Cairns, Melbourne to Mildura and Melbourne to Alice Springs.

In additional, the three rival airlines extended their thoughts to Bonza aviation colleagues and their families who will “feel the impact of today’s news”.

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia all offered recruitment opportunity discussions for those hoping to stay in the aviation field.

Bonza launched in January last year, after more than a year of planning and spruiking quirky aircraft names and cabin crew uniforms.

The airline, which focused on flights to regional destinations including Cairns, Gladstone and Albury, also flies to Melbourne. However, Sydney and Brisbane are off the airline’s route path.

Earlier this month, Bonza announced they would be reducing the frequency of flights to some of its most popular routes, including Gold Coast to Cairns from five weekly roundtrips to three, Gold Coast to Townsville down from five weekly roundtrips to three and Gold Coast to Melbourne Tullamarine will be reduced from four weekly roundtrips to one as of May 1.

In an interview with the ABC ,a man from the Sunshine Coast, whose wife works for the airline, claimed 20 cabin crew were called into a meeting early on Tuesday and told the airline had “finished”.

“She went to work this morning, as per usual, they just went in — there were two crews there — they were just basically told that Bonza has finished,” he told the ABC.

“They’ve been told that they’re not flying until further notice.

“They’ve all been told that the bottom line is that Bonza will no longer be flying.

“They’re pretty devastated. It’s their job. She’s been in it from day one. It’s a bit of a blow for Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast.”

The administrators have established a hotline for customers for any queries they may have on 03 8678 1600.
