Takua Pa Old Town

Takua Pa Old Town was once a bustling hub of the Thai economy. The area was originally called Takola and dates back to the Sukhothai Period, around the 13th century when Takua Pa was a vital link in a major trading route. It was said that Takua Pa had the finest harbor on the West coast of Thailand, then know as Siam to outsiders. The area was rich abundant in valuable herbs and spices and attracted traders from all over the world. The town was later re-named Takua Pa when it was discovered that the area had rich tin and lead ore reserves. “Takua” is the Thai word for lead. Tin and lead mining industry boomed, and along with increased demand for rubber and palm oil plantations, brought wealth into the area well into the 20th century.

The Takuapa Old Town Sunday market is an insight into life in the ancient town well before the tourism industry came to the area. When the town was at its peak, Khao Lak village was just a small plantation settlement. A walk around Takua Pa Old Town is light a journey back in town. Many of the people still living in the town were born and raised there. Although in many cases their children and grand children have moved away to take up a job a Khao Lak resort or elsewhere in Thailand, those who remain often still live a semi-traditional lifestyle.

Despite the towns interesting history, Takua Pa Old Town is often missed of the typical Khao Lak tourist map. Purely because is not on the main road to Phuket Airport. Takua Pa Old Town is however located on the road from Khao Lak to Khao Sok Natioanl Park.

While staying in Khao Lak, a tour of the Takua Pa Old Town is a must. The town’s rich history and friendly locals make this tour a trip to remember. Takua Pa also has several temples that have just as much history as the town. Temple tours are among the most popular days out for tourists staying in Khao Lak. And an afternoon stroll through the Old Town Sunday market is the perfect end to every temple tour.

What do I need to wear?

When visiting temples in Thailand, it is important to remember that there is a dress coode. At most local temples, it is usually acceptable to wear respecful clothing that covers knees and shoulders. This means that knee length, or three-quarter length shorts are fine. T-shirts or polo shirts are also usually ok to wear. Provided they are not low cut to show cleavage, cropped to show belly buttons or printed with logos or slogans that could be seen as dis-respectul or un-polite.

The dress code is much more strict and widely enforced in big temples. When visiting big temples in Bangkok for example, it is best to wear plain t-shirts and long, light weight trousers.

With regards to footwear, it is usually acceptable to wear flip-flops or sandles. In many areas of the temple, you may be required to go barefoot. So it is best to wear shoes that you can slip on and off easily. Just remember never to raise your feet, and never point your feet at anything or anyone.

Traveler Reviews

Really nice tour to the Tsunami Museum ( not “nice” but insightful), to the beautiful Wat Khong Kha Pimuk (temple), and to Takua Pa Sunday Market. Because of the rain the market wasn’t as packed with stalls as it normally would be so our wonderful guide Robert took us to a local tea house and brought as an array of treats from the market to try! Robert spoke English really well, the best we’ve heard from a Thai tour guide/hospitality person on our trip; and he was friendly and insightful throughout the whole trip and made it engaging! Before the tour we were worried that the heavy rain will be a downer on the tour but he made sure we were having a good time and gave us lots of good historical insights into the places we went. I’d highly recommend this tour!

We did this tour and 2 others with tourplan Khao Lak and they were all amazing. Super easy communication via whatsap, great value for money and friendly knowledgeable guides. I would certainly recommend this tour and any others they offer.

I only gave it 4 stars as I thought when I booked it , it included a visit to a local waterfall. The temples and old town were good but our guide , Robert and Jo, our driver were excellent. I was disappointed that the waterfall was not included, however Robert our guide took us to see it so we would not be disappointed. Robert was excellent- his local knowledge was great and he gave us lots of information about Thailand itself which we really enjoyed. If this review was about Robert alone , I would have given it 5 stars.

Robert collected us from our resort for our half day tour visiting two local temples and the Takuapa old town. He is a fantastic guide and very friendly. We enjoyed learning all about Buddhism and the temples were just amazing. We then visited Takuapa old town and had lovely juice and snack at a local cafe called "Kopi Kuapa." A highly recommend tour.

The was a really great tour. Boyd the guide, was super and had lots of interesting information and was really pleasant. Overall had a great day, thanks to Boyd

Robert was a wonderful guide. Very friendly and knowledgeable. We were fortunate to watch part of an ordination ceremony for a Buddhist monk. Drank coffee at a locally-owned coffee shop. Ended our tour by walking to a waterfall. An absolutely remarkable morning out.

We had a fabulous morning on our temple tour. Our guide, Robert, was absolutely wonderful: extremely knowledgeable, super with the children, friendly and engaging. He made the experience really, and our children were engaged throughout.

We had an early start and beat the masses, both the temples were amazing and Robert our guide with his knowledge made it even more interesting. Then off to the old town of Takuapa which really contrasted with Khao Lak. Finally a trip to Sai Rung waterfall. All in all a very interesting and enjoyable tour.

We had a lovely tour from Robert today, we can not recommend him enough! His English was amazing, he gave good information, was very funny and very welcoming to my family. We stopped at some extra places he thought would interest us. The temples were beautiful and so peaceful, it was nice that they weren’t crowded with tourists! What a wonderful day, thank you Robert.
