Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

With an impressive success rate, we take our guests to the Atherton Tablelands to observe animals, such as the elusive platypus (we have a 90% + success rate) and the rare tree kangaroos, in their natural habitat as well as the nocturnal animals.

Cairns is a major tourist destination with thousands of visitors coming here each year to experience the Great Barrier Reef and yet relatively few discover the Cairns Tablelands (sometimes known as the Atherton Tablelands).

The Tablelands are within easy reach of Cairns offering a shorter drive time than any Daintree rainforest tours and greater rainforest wildlife spotlighting opportunities. This allows our tours to depart in the early afternoon. As the rainforest comes alive at night (80% of animals in Australia are nocturnal or more active at night), our spotlights enable us to capture the animals up in the canopy.

Our tour is best suited to active people who enjoy walking.  Part of the experience is the looking for the wildlife and that requires following trails through the forest.  The ground can be uneven and often muddy with medium inclines. So unfortunately we are not disable/wheelchair accessible. During the tour we usually cover around 3-4km on foot spread over at least 4 sites. The best time of day to spot wildlife in Australia is at dusk through to nighttime so you need to be comfy walking in the dark as well, however all the tracks we use at night are on flat safe ground.

Experiencing the  tropical rainforest at night is something you will remember, especially with an informative guide to help you understand this magnificent wildlife environment.

Tour Description:

After being picked up from your hotel (please note for hotels in Port Douglas there is an extra $150 per booking pick up fee) we go in search of Australian native animals around Cairns on our rainforest wildlife spotlighting tour. We make a series of short drives to visit several locations so you get a taste for the variety of sights in this area. Your guide will then introduce you to some of the world’s most unusual animals, including the elusive platypus (we have a 90% success rate), tree kangaroos, possums, gliders, flying foxes, bandicoots, echidnas, snakes, frogs and many others.

On the tour we will also learn about the tropical rainforest and how local Aboriginal tribes use the vegetation to make tools and to heal and make remedies to solve everyday common ailments.

Excursion Overview

Learn about alaskan rainforests that make up the great state of alaska.

A delightful eight-mile coastal drive takes you to the exclusive Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, a private reserve located in the forested mountains at rustic Herring Cove. This pristine natural environment is home to bald eagles, black bears, seals, a variety of birds, and other species attracted by the major salmon runs in the abundant marine estuary. In addition to wildlife viewing opportunities, this tour enables you to see and observe a master native totem pole carver at work. You will be greeted by your naturalist and guided along an improved trail through the heart of the dense forest, amongst tall stands of hemlock, spruce, and Alaska cedar. The forest floor is covered with mosses, wildflowers, and a variety of berries. Stops will be made at strategically located viewing areas. Your guide will lead you to a protected open estuary, where you follow Eagle Creek along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands. Major runs of salmon return to spawn here. Watch and listen to the symphony of bird activity in this spectacular setting. During the spawning season bears and seals feed on salmon in Eagle Creek and the likelihood of viewing these fascinating animals is good. Bald eagles and other birds wait for scraps in the estuary. Sitka blacktail deer, mink, and marten also frequent the area. Seasonal ecosystem changes result in varying levels of wildlife activity. If you like nature, you will love this tour. At the conclusion of the hike, enjoy great photographic opportunities as you are guided through the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill, established by legendary pioneer Ben Fleenor. Observe a master native totem pole carver at work and enjoy his many works in front of our General Store.

On jun 2024.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun to be with! The bear sighting was the highlight of the tour and we loved being able to touch the banana slug. Totem carving and knife making were also very interesting. A-1 tour!!

This was a fantastic tour and it is for everyone--young, old, easy walking even for my 81 year old mom. Our guide did a great job with her commentary and was kind to those of us who took a lot of pictures. We slowed down our tour, but my digital photo frame will be happy. Highly recommend this tour for those who love plants and nature and enjoy learning about them.

We enjoyed our tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and gave us so much good information. The entire tour was great to breath in the fresh air.

Our guide Shannon did a wonderful job guiding us through this beautiful rain forest. Very informative and relaxing!

We were lucky, a group of at least six black bears were feasting on salmon in the stream. It was amazing. Interesting forest walk. The raptor centre had only three birds though. Best value trip when you see bears.

Meet Norm Hann

Norm Hann started working as an adventure guide in the Great Bear Rainforest over 20 years ago. His passion for the people and the place grew quickly since then. In 2006 he was given the ultimate coastal honour of being adopted into the Raven Clan, and named T’aam Laan meaning “Steersman of the Canoe.”

In 2010, Norm decided to paddle the proposed Enbridge tanker route on an expedition called Standup4Greatbear, to bring awareness to the threat of these tankers to the coastal First Nations and the pristine ecosystems of the Great Bear. This experience deepened Norm’s passion for promoting education and protection of the Great Bear Rainforest – and also caught the attention of acclaimed filmmaker Anthony Bonello. In 2013, the award-winning documentary film STAND  was released, through which Norm’s paddleboarding expedition along the BC coastline is highlighted.

“The Great Bear Rainforest is a spectacular and mesmerizing place. Sharing the beauty and secrets of the temperate rainforest with guests from around the world is an honor for me.”

Itineraries

Arrive at CJIA met and transfer to your hotel in Georgetown and to your hotel. Overnight at El Dorado Inn

Kaieteur Falls and Iwokrama

Morning departure from your hotel to airport for chartered flight to Kaieteur Falls, a natural wonder with a sheer drop of 741 feet (225 meeters), 5 times the height of Niagara Falls. Kaieteur National Park is situated on the Guiana Shield, a plateau that is one of the world's oldest and remotest geological formations. The entire National Park is located within one of the largest and most biodiverse rainforests in the world and is home to the tiny golden frog which spends it entire life in the large tank bromeliads; white-chinned and white-collared swifts; red and green macaws Morpho hecuba, South America's largest butterfly, the Ocelot, and the Cock-of-the-rock. After an exciting tour of Kaieteur Falls, fly to Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve. Upon arrival, transfer to the River Lodge. Arrive just in time to relax before lunch and get settled into your room. After lunch explore one of the nearby wildlife trails near the River Lodge with an experienced Iwokrama Guide. You will see the mora, soft wallaba and wamara trees and may be able to view the Screaming Piha, the Grey Chinned Hermit, Gray Antbird, Chestnut Woodpecker, the Gray-winged Trumpeter, and the Black-necked Aracari. (Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner) Overnight at Iwokrama River Lodge

Turtle Mountain Tour

Turtle Mountain Tour After breakfast leave the River Lodge for a 30-minute boat ride to the foot of Turtle Mountain for a mildly challenging hike to its summit at 950 foot (290 meters). This hike takes about 1-1 1/2 hours but the breathtaking views are more than worth the effort. Turtle Mountain provides excellent views of the top of the rainforest canopy. Visitors will gaze upon several often hazy mountain ranges, the dense emerald jungle and the mighty Essequibo River. The summit also offers an opportunity to see several species of monkey including the Red Howler, the Black Spider and the Wedge Capuchin. After lunch at the River Lodge visit the Kurupucari Falls to see the Amerindian Petroglyphs. These stunning works of art are estimated to be over 6,000 years old and best seen during low water season. Then visit the small Amerindian community of Fair View. After a relaxing dinner, join us for a cruise on the Essequibo River through the black of night, maybe lit only by a pale moon. Your guide shines the spotlight and there it is ... the red eye glare of the black caiman! Frequently and closely seen lying on the river banks, the world's largest of the alligator family grows to 20 feet (6 meters) long. A boat ride at night may also introduce you to other nocturnal creatures such as tree boas, pacas, nightjars, and hula tree frogs. (Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner) Overnight at Iwokrama River Lodge

Indian House/Canopy Walkway/Surama Village

At dawn take an early morning boat trip round Indian House Island. Keep an eye out for butterflies, snakes and macaws as they come out to have "breakfast" on the edge of the island. This early morning trip also gives you a chance to hear the dawn songs of the five species of Tinamou, Marbled Wood Quail, Band-rumped Swift, White-banded and Black-collared Swallows and many more! After breakfast you will leave the River Lodge and continue south-west along the Iwokrama Road to the Atta Rainforest Lodge and Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of the elusive jaguar, South America's largest cat. The 505 foot (154 meter) state-of-the-art Iwokrama Canopy Walkway offers a totally unique experience in the region and envelopes you in the jungle's mid-level canopy through a series of suspension bridges and decks from heights of up to 98 feet) (30 metres). You'll have the chance to see birds like the Green Aracari, Scarlet Macaw, Guiana Toucanette or Channel-bill Toucan. Red Howler Monkeys may also be observed. Check out the epiphytes such orchids and bromeliads, and look for the amazing parasitic Ficus plant as it engulfs another tree. There is also the greenheart tree, the waramadan (endemic in Guyana only to the Iwokrama Forest) and the poisonous aromata!

Continue to Surama located at the foothills at the Pakaraima mountains. The Amerindian village community of Surama in southwest Guyana is reached by 4-wheel drive. The community is in the heart of Guyana where eight square kilometres of savannah are surrounded by the forest-covered Pakaraima Mountains. Surama's inhabitants are mainly from the Makushi tribe and still observe many of the traditional practices of their forebears. Surama Eco Lodge is an isolated and idyllic community project in the Pakaraima Mountains. It has four simple cabins with ensuite bathrooms and a central dining, bar and lounge area offering fantastic views across the savannah, rainforest and mountains. Surama village has embarked on a community tourism project which offers employment opportunities to many of its inhabitants and benefits the village as a whole. On arrival in Surama receive a welcome from a village councillor and settle into your accommodation. A local guide will escort you for a short walk on trails to observe the forest and bird life. As the afternoon cools your guide will take you on a tour of the village. Visit the local school, medical center and church along with some village houses. Tonight enjoy an educational walk to observe wildlife and experience the mystique of the forest after dark. (Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner) Overnight at Surama Eco Lodge

The 1600 foot (487 meter) Clarence Mountain Nature Trail is a 6-hour round trip. After your climb to Clarence Mounatin, camp out with local guides on the mountain. (Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner)

Depart Surama

Fly to Georgetown. Pick up and transfer to your hotel.

10 Best Destinations For Wildlife Photography (Rainforest To Safari)

W ildlife photography is a rewarding yet challenging art form that requires a keen eye and a lot of patience. Travelers who want to snap candid photos of creatures in their natural habitats must be willing to spend hours on end waiting for animals to appear.

There is no way to predict when or where the animals will be (unless on a safari where the animals are being tracked), so the photographer must be ready to wait as long as necessary for the opportunity to take the perfect photo. Besides having the right equipment, such as a zoom lens or telephoto lens, wildlife photographers should consider which destinations offer them the highest chance of spotting an animal they are excited to photograph.

Look at these incredible options for where to travel to encounter wildlife in its natural setting, which is truly a photographer's dream. From the top photography spots in US national parks to the plains of Africa and the ice of Antarctica and beyond, here are some of the best places in the world for wildlife photography!

Always respect wildlife. Never approach or feed a wild animal. Take nothing but photos (from a safe distance) and leave nothing but footprints. Never take selfies with wild animals. Always research tour operators to ensure they are sustainable and have respect for wildlife in their region.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

It’s no secret that Tanzania is the place to go for incredible wildlife encounters and resulting photos to treasure for a lifetime. It's said to be one of the best wildlife safari destinations in the world (if not the best).

Booking a safari experience in the Serengeti provides multiple opportunities for game drives that almost guarantee a chance to capture a photo of at least one magnificent animal.

  • Best Time Of Year to Visit: Late June to September
  • Wildlife To Look For: Wildebeests, The Big Five (Lions, Leopards, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, African Elephants)

Planning a trip to Serengeti National Park during the summer (from late June to September) is the best time for capturing an image of The Great Migration.

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an underrated destination anyway, but it's also among the best places for safari experiences and wildlife photography.

Located Southeast of India in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital, Colombo, is worth spending a few days exploring before venturing into the countryside to go on a safari in Yala National Park.

  • Best Time Of Year to Visit: December to May
  • Wildlife To Look For: Flightless Cormorant, Galápagos Flamingo, Galápagos penguins, Darwin's Finches, Blue Footed Boobies, Giant Tortoises

Torres Del Paine National Park, Chile

Chilean Patagonia is famous for its beautiful landscapes, but the wildlife here is not to be forgotten. While peak season (December and January) means lots of hikers on the main trails in Torres del Paine National Park and therefore less wildlife to be seen.

Trekking in shoulder season offers a better chance of spotting wildlife on the trails.

  • Best Time Of Year to Visit: October to November
  • Wildlife To Look For: Guanacos, Pumas, South American Gray Fox

To be more specific, it's also among the top wildlife photography spots in the world, where wildlife enthusiasts can snap a photo of animals they can’t see every day. The park is home to more than 200 species of creatures; the animals in Yellowstone to see range from bison to birds to bears and more.

  • Best Time Of Year to Visit: September to October
  • Wildlife To Look For: Wolf, Coyote, Grizzly Bear, Elk, Bison, Moose, Black Bears

The seventh continent may be out of reach for many people due to logistics and budget. But for those who have the means to plan a cruise to Antarctica , incredible wildlife awaits. Photographers heading to Antarctica will have a chance to take photos of creatures that dwell on land and in the sea.

There are no guarantees of seeing wildlife on these cruises, but chances are high that at least one of the usual animals (whales, seals, and penguins) will be spotted at some point on the journey.

  • Best Time Of Year to Visit: November to March
  • Wildlife To Look For: Whales, penguins, seals
