Gubalowka sits at 1123 meters, looking down on Zakopane directly above the town in the Tatra National Park. The trip to Gubalowka begins with a Zakopane cable car ride up the hill, one of Zakopane’s best things to do.

The Zakopane cable car takes 4 minutes and costs over a euro. The ride up the hill is amazing as you ascend upwards through pine trees, and the town slowly disappears beneath you.

You will find restaurants, bars and spectacular views at the top of Gubalowka Hill in the Polish Tatra Mountains. The sun deck terrace is one of Europe’s most magnificent spots for a drink, food or ice cream.

A soft-serve ice cream is called Lodi. You will encounter machines everywhere selling Lodi in summer in Zakopane. The view from the top is amazing as it sweeps over the Tatra mountains .

Snow covers the tops of the highest peaks, even in summer. There is a smaller market for the top-selling Polish handicrafts and souvenirs. The market seems to stretch forever on either side of the road at the top of the hill.

You will be bombarded with the smell of grilled meats, hamburgers, and hot dogs while trying to avoid market stall holders trying to sell you anything and everything. Hiking trails lead off from the top of Gubalowka, providing incredible views and access to surrounding villages. In winter, ski runs lead down the hill.

Family travel tip:

At the top of the mountain is a toboggan run for kids and adults, a rope course, horse rides and numerous other activities to amuse the kids in Zakopane.

Zakopane things to do – Unique Architecture and Design

Many houses and buildings in Zakopane are built out of wood according to the traditional style of the area. The design of the buildings is inspired by the regional art of Poland’s highland region known as  Podhale .

This unique architectural style of the building is now known as the Zakopane style. All new buildings up to 1914 had to be built in this way.

It is still very popular today, and a walk around town will tell you that many new buildings are still being built in this traditional style. Finding them in the streets is one of the best free things to do in Zakopane.

Everywhere you look, there are amazing wooden buildings, both single and double-story. The house is truly unique. You won’t find this sort of design anywhere else in the world.

I found myself wandering different streets, admiring how people had stuck to the traditional building designs but had added small touches of their own.

Every summer since 1965, the Festival of Highland Folklore has been held in Zakopane, Poland. Like all great cultural events, this one was born from a small beginning with strong ties to the area’s regional history.

What began with four local folk singing groups has since expanded to encompass performers and traditions from other countries, making the Festival of Highland Folklore an international event in Zakopane. Zakopane comes alive during the festival with music, dance and singing.

This festival makes learning about other cultures and traditions possible while still having amazing entertainment for the whole family.

The Top 8 Things to Do in Zakopane, Poland

Hall W. Rockefeller is a writer and art historian, specializing in the work of woman artists from 1900 to the present.

Located along the Polish-Slovakian border, Zakopane is known as Poland’s winter capital. Easily accessible by bus or train from Krakow, it is a must-visit, whether for a day trip of hiking or a cozy weekend getaway. As the town is nestled in the Tatras mountain range, it boasts a robust ski culture. Don’t, however, believe that the joys found in this charming town are only limited to the snowy months. In warmer weather, ski trails turn into hiking trails and the river becomes swimmable. Always a favorite no matter the season is the town's iconic architecture; known as the Zakopane style, it's characterized by steep a-frame roofs (which conveniently dispel snow) and log-cabin frames.

Wander Down Krupowki Street

Located in the heart of the Polish ski town is the mile-long, pedestrian-only Krupowki Street, nicely restored with cobbled stones and vintage lamps. A stroll down Zakopane's main thoroughfare is always one of discovery. Here you'll find traditional Polish restaurants and shops selling souvenirs and outdoor gear, as well as more universally recognizable brands like McDonald’s and Costa Coffee. And in the winter months, coffee counters up and down the street sell hot chocolate and waffles.

Sample Polish Fare

Courtesy of Karczma u Fiakra

If you get hungry for a classic Polish meal (or simply want to come in from the cold), there are many options along Krupowki that offer extensive menus full of hearty foods—not to mention a traditional setting of unfinished wood benches, slab tables, and, of course, a fireplace. Sample delicious Polish cuisine like mushroom or beet soup, pierogi (boiled dumplings stuffed with cheese, potato, meat, vegetables, or fruits), and goulash. (While it is easy to eat vegetarian in Poland, the prevalence of cheese in Polish cuisine might make eating vegan a challenge). Many of these restaurants (like Krupowa Izba and Karczma u Fiakra ) have live Polish folk music every night.

Hit the Slopes

Zakopane features a number of mountains with various ski trails. It's particularly known for being accommodating to beginner skiers, as slopes are well groomed and mellow and instruction is easily accessible. Passes are often much less expensive than alternative ski resorts in Europe, with pay-as-you-go passes available to those uninterested in spending a full day on the mountain.

The town is also home to Wielka Krokiew, the biggest ski jump in Poland. While it is not open to amateurs, it hosts various ski jumping competitions that are open to spectators throughout the year (and not necessarily when there is snow).

Hike in the Polish Mountains

Zakopane is located just outside the border of Tatra National Park , which contains a variety of trails of varying lengths and difficulty. Keep in mind that the Tatras are the biggest mountain range in Poland, so be prepared to climb for at least a portion of your trek! The hike to the top of Kasprowy Wierch is a relatively well-maintained gravel road where you may encounter the occasional car; meanwhile, other trails, such as the one to Five Lakes Valley, are for hikers only. For those who do not want to hike, the beautiful (if touristy) Morskie Oko lake is accessible by horse-drawn carriage. Note that you might be charged a small fee upon entering the park. Trailheads are easily accessible by bus or taxi.

See the Mountains From Above

If hiking isn’t your thing, but you still want to see a bit of the great outdoors, many of the ski resorts’ lifts operate in the warmer months. Panoramic views of the surrounding Tatra mountains are best enjoyed from the top of Kasprowy Wierch, which you can reach by cable car . Once at the summit, you'll get a bird's-eye view of Zakopane, as well as a glimpse of Slovakia. ( Check the operating schedule before you go, however, as the gondola does not operate in the late fall.) Other trails are accessible by funicular, though they provide a less spectacular view of the mountains.

Explore the Town by Carriage

Krupowski may not be accessible to cars, but horse-drawn carriages are another story. If a tour of Zakopane accompanied by the clip-clop of horseshoes on cobblestones is your idea of a romantic evening, climb into one of the carriages on Krupowski. Be sure to bundle up—you'll be given a blanket, but your ears are sure to get cold in the open air. Trips usually last about an hour and cost around $60.

Visit the Pęksowy Brzyzek

If you’re looking for a low-key activity to wind down after skiing or hiking, be sure to visit Pęksowy Brzyzek, the cemetery belonging to Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa. Home to hundreds of graves, many have been hand carved from tree trunks. Look out for the grave of Jan Dlugosz, who lost his life at the age of 33; his headstone is a massive rock adorned with climbing ropes to honor his passion in life: mountain climbing. Bring a carabiner to pay your respects to him, or flowers and candles for the others buried here. It is not surprising to see nuns making their way through the rows of gravestones, lighting candles for the deceased, even for those who died more than a century ago.

Take Home a Taste of the Tatras

Look out for the dozens of carts scattered along the main thoroughfares of Zakopane, which sell smoky Oscypek cheese (produced from spring through October and made from sheep’s milk) or Golka cheese (which is produced in the winter months and made from cow’s milk). If you’re bringing it back to the hotel for a late-night snack, be sure to purchase the homemade jam on offer. For those planning on taking it home, ask for a vacuum-sealed package so you don’t stink up your suitcase!

Alpine Skiing

Alpine skiing.

Although it may seem unbelievable, historians date ski as means of transport to 4000 years ago. There are experts who think first skis and their usage even 8000 years before Christ. As for the region preceding in this field, the historians also are not congruent – some think that first skis come from Scandinavia and northern-western Russia, some are sure that first snow gear was used by Central Asian folk, around Altai mountain. Thankfully, Polish ski history is not so convoluted. In our country, first ski-ride lovers and enthusiasts were Stanisław Barabasz and famous sailor gen. Mariusz Zaruski. Historical sources say that around the year 1888, Stanisław Barabasz explored Jasło territory on custom-made skis. The first recorded ski trip in polish Tatry was directed toward Black Pond Gąsienicowy in 1891. Stanisław Barabasz himself venture into the same spot in 1894. This date was considered as the official beginning of skiing in Zakopane. At the end of the 19th century, Stanisław Barabasz moved to Zakopane and settled there, working as Vocational School of Wood Industry principal. His pupils crafted their first wooden ski. This prominent ski lover had one rule: he eagerly taught skiing only if each of his apprentices would share this knowledge to at least one person. A few years later, from Stanisław Barabasz, Mariusz Zaruski and Mieczysław Karłowicz's initiative, in April 1907, a ski promotion organization was established, known as Zakopane Tatra Society Ski Department.

In 1908 there was a first ski course in Zakopane for around 60 participants. Also in this year, Mariusz Zaruski and Henryk Bobkowski published Alpine ski guidebook. Ski section was very active, organizing courses and ski tours around Tatry Mountains. Thanks to that, a first polish guide, Zakopane and Tatry ski terrain guidebook by Mariusz Zaruski was printed. This was also the beginning of ski tour rides, so popular nowadays.

Surely, Zakopane is a cradle of polish skiing, reaching 120 years of tradition. The first ski club established here (SNPTT) is the oldest Polish organization of this kind, being active nearly without stopping. During the decades, sportsmen like Mariusz Zaruski, Bronisław Czech, Helena and Stanisław Marusarz, Józef Oppenheim, Aleksander Schiele, Franciszek Bujak, and Stanisław Zubek were among its ranks. This is where, on December 26, 1919, the Polish Ski Association (PZN) was established, playing a key role in polish ski organizations. In the year 1910 in Goryczkowa Hall, the first international ski competition in Poland was held, assembling 150 participants from many countries. At the same time, the first ski jump competition was held. In next few decades the town welcomed best skiers from the whole world, hosting FIS World Cup three times (1929, 1939, 1962), guesting WinterUniversiade competitors three times (1956, 1993, 2001), and organizing World and Europe Cup in biathlon, Junior Cup in biathlon and speed skating Junior Cup. Also, there were international Norwegian combination, ski runs and slalom competitions held in town. Each year in January there is a FIS World Cup in ski jumping held in Zakopane.

We invite every ski and snowboard enthusiast to draw from winter offer of many ski slopes in town's territory. Classical skiing fans will certainly find something interesting on beautifully prepared winter tracks for cross-country skiing. Everyone who values freedom and adventure is welcome to fuse tourism with ski riding and to test their skills on ski tour routes on Tatry National Park territory.

I wholeheartedly believe that Poland has it all – absolutely breathtaking cities, tranquil seaside, beautiful lakes… there is even a desert! But on the very south of the country, one more absolutely magical gem awaits your visit – the Tatra Mountains. It is at their foot where you will find Zakopane.

Located a little over 100 kilometres (just under 70 miles) from the capital of Lesser Poland, Zakopane is the ultimate one-day tour destination from Krakow for people who want to experience something extraordinary. Often referred to as the winter capital of Poland , the town offers a perfect blend of outdoorsy fun, modern hotels, beautiful views and fascinating traditions – everyone will find something for themselves!

What does the name Zakopane mean?

Contrary to the names of most cities, the word zakopane actually has a meaning and is commonly used in everyday language. It means... buried  (but only in passive voice, so you could say that skarby zostały zakopane  - the treasure has been buried , but you can't say they buried the treasure  using the same word. The beauty of Polish language, ladies and gentlemen! :)). The name " Zakopane " originates from the distinctive geographical location of the town. The term comes from times when these lands were uninhabited by people.

But why has that become the name of the town? Well, there's a folk legend for it.

A shepherd who, staying with his sheep on a loincloth on the southern slope of Gubałówka, beautifully sunny and warm, with a beautiful view of the Tatra Mountains on the horizon, decided to check whether this place is suitable for a permanent settlement. He buried an oat seed, and after returning there later he saw that the seed had grown up beautifully and gave off a good crop. And from the burial of this grain, this place was called Zakopane.

Isn't that a cute story? Initially, the Zakopane region served as a refuge for shepherds seeking shelter from the harsh mountain conditions and the dangers associated with the alpine climate. The settlement was nestled in a valley, sheltered from winds and extreme weather. This natural location was somewhat "buried" amid the surrounding mountains.

Officially founded in the second half of the 19th century as a mountain settlement, Zakopane has since become a popular leisure destination and a tourist hub recognized both in Poland and abroad. The name reflects both the town's position in the valley and its historical roots as a refuge in the mountains.

What is Zakopane famous for and why should you visit?

The most important things about this 30 000 town in southern Poland are the majestic Tatra Mountains and the unique folklore. Oh, and oscypki .

Definitely oscypki .

The Tatra mountains

There is plenty of reasons to visit the Polish mountains, I mean – just look at the photos in this post… I will give you some more specific recommendations though, don't worry! Regardless of the season – you will not be disappointed . Whether you are into hiking, skiing, snowboarding, or laying on a balcony of luxury hotel sipping mulled wine – Zakopane’s got you covered.

While Zakopane in itself offers a variety of attractions, the most common reason for heading there is to hike in the nearby mountains. I will list just a few of the magical destinations in the Polish Tatra mountains, bear in mind though there are plenty more !

Come and explore them yourself, but please remember to prepare yourself for the hike – wear appropriate shoes and outerwear, take SPF and water with you!

zakopane_giewont_mountain

A very well-known mountain massif in the Tatra mountains with it’s highest point at 1895 metres AMSL. Look at it closely, can you see what it resembles?

It is said to be… a sleeping knight! If you couldn’t see it before, look at the photo once again ;)  There is a legend among the locals that these are actually enchanted knights who sleep deep in the Tatra Mountains and will wake up when the time is right. But when will the time come? We still don't know...

In 1901, a steel cross (15 metres high!) was erected on Great Giewont. It is one of the regional landmarks and a site of religious pilgrimages.

2. Gubałówka

A mountain (1129 metres AMSL at highest point) very popular among tourists. It is a great option for those who want to experience views from a mountain top but can’t or don’t want to hike on foot , as there is a funicular that can quickly take you all the way up.

3. Morskie Oko

I don’t want to be biased, but I think this might actually be my favourite. Just saying!

Morskie Oko (the literal translation of it's name would be the Eye of the Sea ) is a breathtaking lake (the largest one in Tatra mountains) in the midst of the mountains – it looks as if taken straight out of a fairytale . This one is also a very popular spot, and for very good reasons. Absolutely incredible views worth every second of the hike!

zakopane_morskie_oko

Isn't it just incredible?

Something for more experienced hikers – a beautiful mountain on the border of Poland and Slovakia, with it’s north-western summit being the highest point of Poland (2499 metres AMSL) . Prepatation may take a little more effort, but the satisfaction is very rewarding.

Honorable mentions

The Polish Tatra mountains are truly beautiful and I highly encourage you to dive into Google to see what piques your interest and pursue that. Will it be one of the places mentioned above? Or maybe one of our beautiful valleys – Dolina Chochołowska , Dolina Kościeliska or Dolina Pięciu Stawów ? Maybe you will want to reach the top of Kasprowy Wierch or Świnica ? It doesn’t really matter which one you choose, as long as you are excited for the journey!

Who lives in Zakopane? The wonderful people and the folklore of the region

The region of Polish Tatra mountains is called Podhale and the people who live there ( górale  eng. highlanders ) are well-known for being very vibrant, passionate and hard-working people with rich culture that they like to cultivate. Their culture, music, dance, and traditional attire are an integral part of Zakopane. You will surely spot some traditional outfits and hear their lively music (often played live in restaurants). There is even an entire art style called Zakopane Style , which is very prominent in the region – you will notice very characteristic buildings everywhere!

Just take a look:

Auschwitz-Birkenau Guided Tour from Cracow

Regional cuisine of the area is known for some of the most recognizable dishes in Poland . As you will see in a second, most of them are savoury and very flavorful!

Here are some examples:

  • bryndza and bundz (made from sheep milk),
  • oscypek the king of all cheeses from the region (and may even be the king of all cheeses in all of Poland)  – smoked cheese made from sheep milk; has a characteristic shape – it’s tapered at both sides. Often served with cranberry sauce, oscypek provides a delightful blend of savory and sweet notes, offering a true taste of the region's heritage.
  • gołka (looks similar to oscypek, but it’s made from cow’s milk not from sheep's milk – you can tell the difference between them by their shape; their taste however is very different, so it’s a good idea to taste both)
  • kwaśnica – traditional saeuerkraut soup with meat, eaten usually with bread or potatoes – a must-try! This tangy soup is prepared by fermenting cabbage and cooking it with a variety of meats such as smoked sausage or bacon. The result is a hearty, flavorsome soup characterized by its rich, robust taste and comforting aroma.
  • czosnianka – soup made with potatoes, garlic, onion and mint
  • hałuski – a specific type of thick, soft potato dumplings
  • placek zbójnicki (or Highlander’s Potato Pancake in English) – well… a potato pancake :) made with potatoes, flour, onion, fatback, lard, eggs and spices. These hearty potato pancakes are typically served with goulash or beef stew, creating a filling and satisfying meal. The crispy texture of the pancakes complements the richness of the meat, offering a delightful contrast of flavors and textures.

Pierogi , traditional dumplings, are beloved in highland cuisine and come with various fillings, including meat, potatoes, cabbage, mushrooms, or cheese. These dumplings are typically boiled and then either pan-fried or served with crispy onions and sour cream. Pierogi are a versatile and comforting dish, appreciated for their delicious fillings wrapped in a soft dough casing.

If you’re wondering where you could try all those delicious delicacies, I recommend checking out the tripadvisor list of best restaurants in Zakopane – thousands of tourists can’t be wrong! ;)

What if a lit stove is not enough to heat.... %%

First things first, so... D zięgielówka (ahh those Polish names....)     – nalewka  its aa type of traditional Polish strong alcoholic beverages made with garden angelica. In the region of Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, there are specific alcoholic beverages that are an integral part of the local culture. One of the most characteristic drinks is " Żubrówka ," also known as bison grass vodka , which is infused with natural aromas of bison grass, giving the drink a subtle, herbal flavor. Another noteworthy local alcoholic beverage is " Krupnik ," a traditional honey-based liqueur infused with spices such as cloves or cinnamon. It's a sweet drink with a rich history, valued as both a way to warm up on cold days and a symbolic element of holiday traditions.

Moreover, the region is renowned for excellent craft beers crafted with passion and utilizing local ingredients such as mountain herbs or honey. These local beers often embody the distinctive flavors of the region and are a popular choice among tourists seeking an authentic experience. Local alcoholic beverages not only complement the culinary journey through Zakopane but also form a part of the cultural heritage, offering an opportunity to taste traditional flavors and beverages deeply rooted in the local traditions.

The weather

Zakopane is a great destination regardless of the season, but it’s important to remember about taking according protective measures.

If you are planning on roaming the hiking trails in the middle of summer, it’s absolutely crucial to use high SPF and cover your head ! During the wintertime on the other hand you have to make sure that you are ready for the harsh freezing weather. As the city is in a close proximity to the mountains, the conditions can be slightly more extreme than in the rest of the country. The weather can change rapidly, so be prepared for everything.

Better safe than sorry!

A Few Reasons Why A Vacation In Zakopane Might Disappoint

Unfortunately, not everyone leaves Zakopane with positive impressions. Internet forums are full of bitter opinions of people who vow never to return. Based on your feedback, we’ve compiled a list of the 6 most common complaints about this city at the foot of Giewont.

Zakopane Can Be Expensive

The most common complaint about Zakopane is its high cost. Some online users complain about the inadequate price/quality ratio of services. You could spend a week in Egypt or Bulgaria with guaranteed weather for the same amount you’d pay for a vacation in Zakopane.

Parking fees are increasing by 30% every year, portions in restaurants are getting smaller and more expensive, and there seems to be an endless quest for profit from tourists. Horse-drawn carriage rides and cable car rides can also be quite expensive.

Check here how expensive that might be: Is Zakopane Really Expensive? A Cost Comparison For a Family of 4

Zakopane Gets Crowded

As one of Poland’s most popular tourist destinations, Zakopane attracts throngs of visitors every year. The Tatra trails are packed with hikers, and long lines form at the top of Giewont. The wait for the Kasprowy Wierch cable car can be up to 5 hours. Krupówki, the busiest place in Zakopane, is constantly flooded with tourists.

Kitsch in Zakopane

Some visitors criticize Zakopane for turning into a giant fair over the years. Krupówki and Gubałówka are now filled with tacky souvenir stalls, and oversized cartoon characters roam the main promenade, posing for pictures. The atmosphere can sometimes feel like an amusement park or a small-town fair.

Zakopane’s Reputation for Swindling

tourist information centre zakopane

Online forums are full of complaints about dishonest practices in Zakopane. Locals are accused of trying to extract as much money as possible from tourists, sometimes through deceptive means. Overpriced taxi rides, pubs, parking and accommodation leave some visitors feeling ripped off.

Traffic Jams in Zakopane

Drivers often lose their enthusiasm for a vacation in Zakopane before they even arrive due to heavy traffic. The road from Poronin to Zakopane is often congested and finding a parking space in the city center can be a challenge.

  • If you are in Zakopane and you are looking for free parking spot, read this: Zakopane on a Budget: How to Find Free Parking Spots

Controversial Treatment of Animals in Zakopane

Tourists’ concerns extend to the treatment of animals in Zakopane. Horse-drawn carriages and dogs sold on Krupówki raise sympathy for the animals’ plight. Animal rights activists have called for an end to horse transportation to Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains, claiming that the horses are overworked. Allegedly, exhausted horses are sent to slaughterhouses or disappear under mysterious circumstances.

Have a nice stay!

Zakopane Coat of Arms - Zakopane Travel Guide

It developed from humble beginnings as shepherd settlements within the clearings of the surrounding forest at the foot of the Tatra Mountains . In the 18th and 19th centuries it grew into a village due to the iron smelting that occurred at nearby Kuznice, which today is part of Zakopane.

Polish tourism began in the 19th century when Tytus Chalubinski, a physician and others connected with the Tatra Society, established in 1873, (now the Polish Tourist Society PTTK) began to promote the area. Towards the late 19th century it became a popular destination for artistic and literary types to visit and settle in the area. Zakapone is responsible for causing a great impact on Polish culture as well as on Polish tourism and has a great amount of accommodation to offer.

Within the oldest district, ul. Koscieliska, in Zakopane is a very old wooden church called Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa which was built by highlanders in 1847. Inside are three altars sculpted by the highlander W.Kulach, and a number of folk sculptures and paintings on glass. The stone chapel, next to the church was erected by another highlander by the name of P. Gasienica in the 19th century and is the oldest religious building in the town.

The historic cemetery behind the church was established in 1848 by the first parish priest of Zakopane and contains about 250 graves including 50 of the celebrities of Polish culture, tourism of the area and Zakopane itself. Amongst those buried are Tytus Chalubinski, writers Kornel Makuszynski and Wladyslaw Orkan, artists Stanislaw Witkiewicz and Antoni Kenar. There is also General Mariusz Zaruski and the parish priest who founded the cemetery, Jan Peksa.

One of the most important events to be held in Zakopane is the International Festival of Highland Folklore which is in August each year. Participants who are highlanders themselves come from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.

There are still a number of very old cottages in the ul. Koscieliska district as well as the later villas that sprung up in the Zakopane style designed by Stainislaw Witkiewicz. These include the Koliba, 1893, and Pod Jedlami, 1897 at Koziniec.

The Krupowki (High street) contains the Parish Church of ‘Holy Family' dating back to the 19th century built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. There is also the Doctor Tytus Chalubinski Tatra Museum built in 1875 and in it is the history of the Podhale and Tatra nature. There are a number of other interesting museums to visit in Zakopane such as the Karol Szymanowski Museum and art galleries.

Many of the houses in the town bear tablets commemorating past distinguished guests.

This site is a travel Guide about the country of Polska which is located in central Europe. You are very welcome to visit my site and I hope that you will enjoy the experience.

Just one of the activities you can try during a winter stay in Zakopane is a horse-drawn sleigh or carriage ride. Available from Zakopane or in the Chocholowska and Kościeliska Valleys in the Tatra National Park. These operate between December and April.

The Krzeptówki Sanctuary, located at the foot of majestic Mount Giewont, is a popular place of worship in Zakopane with many thousands visiting every year. The cult of Our Lady of Fatima is celebrated here and it was visited by the Polish pope, John Paul II in June 1977.

During the May celebrations of the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima the local Highlanders put on their finest traditional costumes. The church was built towards the end of the last century but it's style has references to Witkiewicz and is a votive offering of thanksgiving for John Paul's II life saved from the assassination attempt. It was built with love for the Pope and Our Lady of Fatima by many people with grateful hearts.

Most people go to Zakopane to see the Tatra Mountains . In summer the town is full of hikers and walkers and in winter it becomes the main tourist place in Poland for skying and all things winter sports.

Zakopane's architectural style is evident in a number of buildings, with its exuberance in houses, churches, and even tree-houses.

The Koliba villa was the first building erected to Stanisław Witkiewicz’s (who formalized the style in the 1890's) design known as the Zakopane Style, located at Kościeliska Street being Zakopane’s oldest street with time-honoured houses and characteristic Tatra crofts every where.

The hewn-log architecture used incorporates the rich folk-art traditions of this region’s Highlander culture and traditions involve making everything by hand.

Geography of Zakopane

Such is the geography of Zakopane it is found hidden between the gentle range of Gubałówka and the rocky Tatra summits in the very south of Poland on the boarder with Slovenia. It lies in the southern part of the Podhale region at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, geographic coordinates of Zakopane  are 49.3000° N, 19.9667° E.

The town of Zakopane is hidden between the gentle range of Gubałówka and the rocky Tatra summits.

From 1975 to 1998 it was in Nowy Sącz Province, but since 1999 it has been in Lesser Poland Province.

History of Zakopane

The beginnings of settlement and origin of the name..

It is thought that the first settlers moved south from the Szaflary up the creeks of Bialy Dunajec, Zakopianka and Silent Water arriving in the area now known as Zakopane, most likely in the vicinity of today's hamlets, Ustup and Olcza, probably in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

In the sixteenth century, the area was already well known to the miners who made their living from the Tatra Mountains and were from the Nowy Targ area. At the same time a local people called the Highlanders would graze their sheep around the quiet waters in the springs and glades of the Tatras. The grazing of sheep in a nearby part of the Tatra Mountains, still goes on by today's rural residents, zagubałowskich, especially Maruszyna, waiting for the snows to melt, they would make their way using the hiking trails through the back Gubałówka and remaining in the spring around Zakopane, in the valley.

These two methods of settlement, on the east by Ustup and on the south by Gubalówka explain the emergence of the name “Zakopane”. The first of them, no doubt from the old folk story about one of the shepherds, who, had his sheep in a loincloth on the southern slope of Gubałówka, beautifully sunny and warm, saw the exquisite views of the Tatra Mountains on the horizon and decided to check whether the place was suitable for a permanent settlement. So from a poor hut he grew grain oats, and after returning from grazing on the Tatras saw that the grain had grown well and produced a good yield. And so from burying the seed the place called Zakopane was born. You should note that the clearing called Zakopane today is in the lower part of the slope of Gubałówka. It is still the main family of Gąsieniców, who are recognized as one of the oldest in Zakopane.

Legend has it that this was perhaps the first settler former henchman of chivalry, from which came his nickname of caterpillar. To be truthful, scientists, after analysing how to pronounce the name of the city (buried - may be something to do with the polish word zakopać) refuse the legend, as the name may not be derived from the word, as it is pronounced differently (zókopane).

So what of the other legend. Well, somewhere in the region of Poronin in th area of Ustup, and may be living in a clearing by himself, in a place called Kopane, this person, who might have been expelled or was fleeing from the law, When asked where he was living, responds “Kopanem” There is no way of telling if either of these two legends have any validity but there may be some truth in either.

So we can deduce that by the mid-sixteenth century there were created two ancient centres of settlement of Zakopane, around the areas of Ustupu and Olczy and at the confluence of Cichej Wody (Quiet Waters) and Potoku Młyniska (Stream Młyniska). Travelling shepherds (Highlanders) had been in the area for sometime but there had been no permanent homes until 1578 when King Stefan Batory issued a “Settlement Prerogative” in order to organize the Polish lands in which people were settled in areas outside of the towns. (Batory was Poland's first King and Prince of Translyvania). This order (known only from later references) almost certainly was forged at least two centuries later, however, regardless of its authenticity it has been confirmed by the facts.

Museums in Zakopane

Old Wooden House in Zakopane - Zakopane Travel Guide

Poland has a long history and has been an important trading route that has been invaded by many different groups over the past 1,000 years. Museums are a great way to explore the nations history about the inhabitants of the land in the past, their lives and customs.

Some of the museums shown below may have an article about them here. Follow the link for the article. For the rest, if you see something you like or wish to know more about please contact the museum directly as I take the attitude that their own website will have more up to date details on what they offer than if I were to include it here.

Muzeum Tatrzańskie - in English, “The Tatra Museum”, was founded in 1888 by a group of friends of Dr Tytus Chałubiński (1820-1889) to celebrate his life and work in discovering the values of Zakopane as a health resort. Dr Tytus Chałubiński was an outstanding physician from Warsaw, also a scientist and social activist, having a passion for the Tatra Mountains and folklore of the local people. For further information visit the site shown below.

This is the wooden house where the music composer, Karol Szymanowski lived from 1930 to 1936. It now is a museum dedicated to his life and work as a composer showing his contacts with Zakopane and Podhale folklore.

The Jan Kasprowicz Museum is housed in the wooden villa where the poet lived with his wife Maria in the years 1923-1926. Jan Kasprowicz stayed in Zakopane frequently, and in 1923 purchased a villa in Harendzie and settled there permanently with his wife Maria. The well-preserved interior hosts works of art, mostly by friends of the poet, house wares, furniture and a library of several hundred books. Next to the museum is the mausoleum where the ashes of the poet and his wife rest.

tourist information centre zakopane

After spending 5 nights in Krakow we felt like we needed a change of scenery from the city life.  We were recommended Zakopane so without any hesitation we booked a bus to the south region of Poland.  We could tell we made the right decision to escape from the city as we drove through beautiful scenery to  Zakopane.  It was a breath of fresh air to be surrounded by beautiful green hills and mountains.

Abit about Zakopane.

Zakopane has a population of 30,000 inhabitants.  The unusual location of the town, hidden between a gentle range of Gubałówka and the rocky Tatra summits was a decisive factor in its career as a tourism centre.  As early as the end of the 18th century Zakopane, a small and remote village started to attract the first summer holidaymakers and at present attracts over 3 million tourists.

How to get to Zakopane?

Getting to Zakopane is relatively convenient, with various transportation options available. If you’re coming from Krakow, the most common route is by bus or train.

Buses are frequent, providing a direct connection between Krakow and Zakopane in approximately two to three hours. Trains are also available, taking a bit longer but offering a scenic journey through the countryside.

If you prefer to fly , the closest airport is Krakow John Paul II International Airport. From there, you can take a shuttle bus or taxi to Zakopane, which is approximately a two hour drive away. Regardless of your choice, you’ll find it easy to reach this charming mountain town.

Book your flight to Krakow below.

Where to stay in Zakopane?

The resort town is located in the southern Poland, at the base of the Tatras Mountains.  It’s a popular departure point for winter sports and summertime mountain climbing and hiking.  Kasprowy Wierch and Gubałówka, reachable by cable car and funiculars are nearby ski destinations offering sweeping mountain views.  The town is also known for its turn-of-the-20th-century wooden chalets, symbols of Zakopane-style architecture.

Zakopane has a variety of accommodation  suiting all types of travellers.  Ranging from luxury hotels, chalets, lodges, apartments, cottages and guest houses.

We booked three nights at Szarotka Pension via Hostel World.  Prices range from 30 euros a night.  Szarotka Pension is located at the foot of the Tatra Mountains and is a short 15 minutes walk to the main centre of Zakopane.  Starting points of mountain routes are close by.  All rooms come with a double bed and a small bathroom with shower and toilet.  Buffett breakfast ia available for a small fee.  You can choose from a wide range of cold meat and cheese, cereal, toasts and jam, hot scrambled eggs and sausages.

How to spend 48 hours in Zakopane?

Walk through the lush bialego valley.

Białego Valley (yellow trail) a family-friendly hike, is just a 3-minute walk from Szarotka Pension, nestled between Mount Krokiew and Sarnia Skała. The stream in the valley has carved deep ponds in soft lime rock, forming picturesque waterfalls where the rock is solid dolomite. With a 187-meter vertical drop per kilometer, it boasts the largest drop among Tatra mountain streams. This valley lies within the Stanisław Sokołowski Nature Reserve and is rich in diverse flora, including spruce, beech, and fir trees, along with Alpenrose, Edelweiss, Martagon Lilly, and yew trees. As for fauna, you may spot deer, occasional brown bears, lynx, and wolves.

The upper part of the valley offers steeper terrain. During our hike on the yellow route, rain interrupted us after about 20 minutes. With only one rain jacket and both camera bags, we decided to return to town and savor some local cuisine.

Bialego Valley- Zakopane

Hike to Morskie Oko

Take a local bus labeled “MORSKIE OKO” from the city center. The bus drops you off at the road entrance. From there, it’s about a two-hour walk to Morskie Oko. Many tourists prefer the journey by horse-drawn cart, often operated by the local Górale inhabitants. The walk is stunning, passing natural rivers, small waterfalls, and towering trees.

Morskie Oko, meaning “The Eye of the Sea,” sits at 1,393 meters (4,570 ft.) above sea level and ranks as one of the Tatras’ most popular destinations. It’s the largest and fourth-deepest lake in the Tatra Mountains, located within the Tatra National Park, Poland, in the Rybi Potok Valley. The lake nestles at the base of the Mięguszowiecki Summits, with surrounding peaks rising about 1,000 meters above the lake’s surface. Among them is Rysy, the highest peak in the Polish Tatras at 2,499 meters. Numerous high peaks encircle the lake, and you can explore trails leading to nearby Czarny Staw, Rysy Peak, and the incredibly beautiful Dolina Pieciu Stawow.

Winter at Morskie Oko

During winter, a brief part of the journey crosses an avalanche danger zone, and even in summer, the area can be chilly and rainy. Situated in front of Morskie Oko lake is the PTTK MORSKIE OKO Hostel , constructed in 1908 by Towarzystwo Tatrzańskie. This popular hostel tends to fill up rapidly due to its excellent location and panoramic views of the lake. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply seeking a tranquil spot for a lake photo without crowds, staying here is ideal. Families and individuals of all ages embark on the hike to Morskie Oko, and the hostel provides a kitchen and a bar where you can savor a traditional beer or a warm mulled wine before your return journey.

Morskie Oko- Zakopane

See the spectacular Czarny Staw Lakes

Czarny Staw, meaning Black Pond, is located just above Morskie Oko. Despite its name, the water here appears more bluish than black and lies at an altitude of 1583 meters (approximately 5200 ft.), just below the Polish Tatra Mountains’ highest peak, Rysy, which stands at 2500 meters (8200 ft.) above sea level.

The rocky edge nearby offers an incredibly beautiful vantage point overlooking the valley and Morskie Oko lake below. From this vantage point, you can follow another trail leading to the Rysy peak. To reach Czarny Staw, you’ll need to circle around Morskie Oko, which is a great idea for encountering fewer tourists and enjoying more expansive vistas. Midway, you’ll turn onto the trail to Czarny Staw and ascend the steep path to the top, following the small stream that flows out of Czarny Staw.

Although the entire hike takes no more than an hour one way, it’s not as easy as the paved road leading up to Morskie Oko lake. Along the way, you can appreciate rare alpine flora, including mountain pine. We found Czarny Staw to be a more enjoyable experience than Morskie Oko due to its fewer tourists and breathtaking views, complete with a picturesque waterfall.

Walk down Krapowki Street

Krupowki is the central the most representative street of Zakopane.  Krupowki street stretches over a kilometre in length.  The promenades lined with a wide selection of shops, restaurants, hotels and attracts thousands of visitors all year round.

This central attraction of Zakopane has an unrivalled atmosphere, especially at the height of the summer and winter seasons.  The street is always vibrant with life.  It is here that you can see portray artists, watch various types of street performers, hear the horses stamping on the pavement and smell the Zakopane cuisine specialities and grilled food.

Also I recommend trying the local cheese called ‘Oscypek’ which is sold on this street.

Best places to eat in Zakopane?

Highlander food is not very fancy but is something that you should try.  Because of the climate conditions and infertile ground, the main food consisted mainly of potatoes, flour,  cabbage, buttermilk, curd and animal fat.  The meat was eaten only for holidays and important familiy events and sheeps cheese  were usually intended for sale, they weren’t eaten daily.  Like any city the closer you eat to the city centre the more expensive the restaurants can be.  We eat at these two restaurants below that were walking distance to the city centre but were still reasonably cheap

Bąkowo zohylina wyźnio –   We were recommended this restaurant by our guest stay owners.  The restraunts is known for having very good traditional food within a cheap price.  We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.  We ordered a meat dish here which was under 10 euros each.

Bąkowo zohylina wyźnio

Dobra Kasza Nasza – GOOD OUR CROP in English serves healthy polish cuisine with vegetarian and vegan options.  We wanted to have a change of cuisine and try a more healthier option.  The prices were cheap and the food options healthy.  The unique feature about the food was that they add groats/barley to the traditional polish staple.  I ordered a main mean of broccoli and barley with a side of salad and all up cost about 5 euros.

Dobra Kasza Nasza

Other activities to do in Zakopane.

There are more activities you can do in Zakopane but unfortunatlly we ran out of time.  If you do get more time be sure to check out the blow out.

  • Gubałówka –   Majestic mountain offering hiking trails & a cablecar to the top, with panoramic views of the area.
  • Kasprowy Wierch –   Kasprowy Wierch or Kasprov vrch is a mountain in the Western Tatras. The mountain is also renowned as one of the most popular ski areas in Poland. Its peak is accessible by cablecar.
  • Tatra National Park-   Expansive, mountainous national park with lakes, caves, wildlife & miles of scenic hiking trails.
  • Giewont –   Popular with hikers, this mountain massif in Tatra National Park features 3 peaks & marked trails.
  • Rysy –   The highest peak in Poland, this popular hiking destination features alpine lakes & views in summer.

Check out some more tours below.

As our unforgettable 48 hours in Zakopane came to a close, we couldn’t help but reflect on the natural beauty, vibrant culture and warm hospitality this charming Polish town had offered us. Whether it was indulging in traditional highlander cuisine, trekking through breathtaking landscapes, or exploring the local markets, Zakopane had left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Kasprowy Wierch cable car

.: While in Zakopane, it is a must to take the cable car to Mount Kasprowy (on the picture above), both in summer and winter this is one of the most popular local attractions for both the adults and especially the kids. In winter time, there are two chair lifts operating in Mt. Kasprowy and two skiing pists for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The other very popular lift in the area is funicular to Gubałówka hill, which starts in the very centre of the town. Gubałówka (1100 m asl) offers spectacular views over the town and the surrounding Tatra mountains.

local market in Zakopane

Weather permits, we shall visit the Tatra National Park. I strongly recommend Strążyska Valley (on the picture above), which can easily be reached from the centre of Zakopane. Those who are not that fond of hiking, or with kids, will make it to the end of the valley after some 40 minute's walk to see the Siklawa waterfalls and taste tea in the local shelter, to rest at the foot of the imposing Mount Giewont.

I recommend this trip also in winter time, it is then worth renting sleighs for the kids, as on the way back to the town they will have a great fun slipping down the valley.

Tatra Mountains

Experienced hikers, used to 5-6 hour's walking, can climb Mount Giewont from Strążyska Valley (2-3 hour's hike on the way up), and then descent via Kondratowa and Kalatówki to Kuźnice (another 3 hrs), where mini buses are available on the way back to the town. An easier, but still very nice trip from the Strazyska Valley is a hike to Kuznice through the Sarnia Skala and the Droga nad Reglami.

.: Other places worth recommending and easily available to less experienced and keen hikers are Morskie Oko lake (as beautiful as popular, it is recommended to start your hike quite early in the morning - even before 7am during in July and August - to avoid enormous crowds later on in the day), Kościeliska and Chochołowska (on the picture below) Valleys. There are horse carts, carriages and sleighs available for transportation in all of the above making it even more accessible for almost everyone.

sleigh ride in the Chocholowska Valley

.: A very popular attraction in the summer is the rafting through the one of the most beautiful gorge in Europe: must do day trip to the Pieniny Mountains (50 km far from Zakopane) that visits some of the most popular attractions of the local area with relaxing rafting trip on the traditional, wooden rafts down the Dunajec river. Those who prefer more exciting activities can choose the rafting on the pontoons or kayaks.

map of the dunajec gorge rafting

.: In bad weather, if the rain is not too heavy thou, I strongly recommend that you get equipped with a raincoat or an umbrella and decide to do a short walk into one of the Regle valleys. The Tatras can be as beautiful in the rain as in the sun, and will guarantee no crowds on the trails.

Krupowki in rain

What else could we recommend to do in Zakopane in rainy weather apart from walking up and down the main street (on the picture above) and visiting restaurants in search for local specialities? Most of all, we shall recommend visiting some of the numerous local museums. We shall however remember that most of those will remain closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I particularly recommend Tatra Museum in 10 Krupówki street and Zakopane Style Museum in Villa Koliba in 18 Kościeliska street (on the way to Koliba we shall not miss out on the Old Church and Old Cemetery). Classical music lovers shall visit Villa Atma, great Polish composer Karol Szymanowski's Museum in 19 Kasprusie street (closed on Mondays). Zakopane's churches are also worth mentioning. Personally, I recommend visiting three of those, two are small wooden ones - Jaszczurówka Chapel and the Old Church in Kościeliska street (on the picture above), the other one is the imposing Fatima Sanctuary in Krzeptówki. In bad weather, thou not only then, I recommend a visit to local Aquapark, as well as the bowling alley. Should you have a car, I would suggest visiting thermal spas in Chocholow as well as Szaflary, Bukowina and Białka Tatrzańska (some 20 km outside Zakopane).

Things to Do in Zakopane, a Pretty Polish Mountain Village

Zakopane, a small Polish town, is at the foot of the famous Tatras Mountains. It is around two hours of driving from Krakow . The town has its unique wooden house architecture, which is very attractive. But the most attractive area is the Tatras National Park, which offers gorgeous views and many outdoor activities all year round.

We added it to the itinerary of our trip to Krakow but only planned a couple of hours for Zakopane. However, after our trip, we had the idea to spend a couple of days there because there were more things to do in Zakopane.

Tatras Mountain View in Zakopane; things to do in Zakopane

Things to do in Zakopane

The list of things to do in Zakopane includes cultural and outdoor activities.

See the unique and beautiful wooden houses

Strolling through one-kilometre long krupówki street, take a funicular to mount kasprowy, enjoy views from gubałówka hill, visit museums, visit poronin, the former residence of the socialist leader lenin, hiking, climbing or biking in tatras mountains, spend a day in a local hot thermal spa, hike to the morskie oko.

One of the main attractions is its turn-of-the-20th-century wooden chalets. Many residential houses, restaurants, shops, hotels, as well as churches, are built in this unique style of Zakopane wooden architecture. From where we parked to the centre, we could spot many wooden houses in all design style. By the way, our hotel GORSKA OSADA Chalet is also in wooden architecture.

Private Wooden House Architecture in Zakopane

If you have only a few hours, one of the things to do in Zakopane is to see the one-kilometre long Krupówki street. It consists of all kind of shops and eateries. Some locals were selling the specialties on the street as well.

On rainy days, you can visit some museums. Two of them are worth to visit, Tatra Museum in 10 Krupówki street and Zakopane Style Museum in Villa Koliba in 18 Kościeliska street.

The Tatra Museum is a museum of the history, culture, nature, and ethnography of the Polish Tatras. The Villa Koliba was built between 1892 and 1893 in Zakopane style and was the first building ever erected in Zakopane style. Since 1983 the Koliba Villa is a registered Polish Monument.

One day we went to a local supermarket and passed Poronin, approximately 7 kilometres north-east of Zakopane. There is a very big wooden villa next to Marszałka Piłsudskiego Street. The villa used to be the former residence of Lenin . Lenin loved the awesome Alpine views and enjoyed long hikes in the mountains.

Today the local community use the villa as office. And the local tourist information centre is in the basement. Not far from the villa, opposite the shopping mall, there is a beautiful church.

One of the most memorable things we did was the hike to the Morskie Oko during our trip to Krakow in the late spring. Near the border between Poland and Slovakia, the Tatra mountains is dotted with blue-green alpine lakes. One of the loveliest and the largest lakes is Morskie Oko, which sits at the bottom of the valley on the Polish side.

We did a great hiking around the Morskie Oko and further up to another lake. It was a great day trip from Krakow.
