Top 10 weekend ski breaks with easy airport access

14. November 2023 | OnTheSnow

If you’re considering a weekend ski break, be sure to maximise your time on the slopes by choosing the right destination.

Avoid wasting valuable skiing time stuck on a transfer bus for hours. Select a weekend ski break with easy access to and from the airport. Most of our top ski resort picks will have you clicking on your skis just 60 minutes after your plane touches down.

Top 10 weekend ski breaks

1.  chamonix , france.

Air : Geneva Airport 88km/60mins

Public transport : TER regional train services to Chamonix station from Geneva Airport (3hrs15) with one change at Martigny Vallorcine. Alternatively,  SAT Mont Blanc  buses run regularly (1hr45).

Road : Accessible directly via the Autoroute Blanche (A40), which connects to the European motorway network. Chamonix is a 60-minute drive via hire car or private shuttle bus .

Chamonix (1,040m) is the place to go for alpine thrill-seekers wanting to push themselves to the extreme. This weekend ski break is known the world over for its steep, challenging runs, off-piste powder and dramatic mountain scenery.

Chamonix hosted the first-ever Winter Olympics in 1924 and is considered by many to be the birthplace of alpine skiing. The resort is a large, yet attractive town offering both traditional charm and lively nightlife.

2.  Megeve , France

Air : Geneva Airport 87km/60mins

Public transport : Direct TGV train to Sallanches (12km from Megeve) during weekends in winter. Bus services transfer from Sallanches to Megeve.

Road : Accessible directly via the Autoroute Blanche (A40), which connects to the European motorway network.

Megeve (1,050m) is a fairly low village with skiing up to 2,353m, so snow conditions can be variable. The terrain is suitable for all levels: from long, quiet green runs to plenty of off-piste terrains which stays untracked for days (although not on the scale of Chamonix).

Megeve is very much a traditional Haute-Savoie village surrounded by working farms. This idyllic weekend ski break has more than 90 restaurants (eight with Michelin stars) and the Place d’Eglise is lined with upmarket shops, cafes and patisseries.

3.  St. Anton am Arlberg ,   Austria

Air : Innsbruck Airport 100km/60mins

Public transport : Regular  OBB trains run direct between Innsbruck and St. Anton at Arlberg Railway Station (approximately 60 minutes).

Road : From Innsbruck, head towards Landeck – to St. Anton am Arlberg.

The cosy town of St. Anton am Arlberg (1,300m) retains its traditional Tirolean atmopshere. The large ski area means you never need to ski the same run twice: 260km runs/83 lifts. Some of the most challenging slopes are Glazig, Gampen, Schindler Kar and Kapall.

St. Anton is an ideal weekend ski break for those craving lively apres-ski; head to the Krazy Kangaruh and Mooserwirt bars, both located directly on the slopes, where you can go to stomp on tables in your ski boots, drink obligatory shots of Jagermeister and listen to German cover bands.

4.  Mayrhofen , Austria

Air : Innsbruck Airport 65km/60mins

Public transport : From Innsbruck Airport, take an airport bus to the central railway station (every 15 mins) and then an OBB train to Jenbach, 20km from Mayrhofen. From Jenbach, the Zillertal Narrow Gauge Railway runs up the Ziller Valley to Mayrhofen. There are also buses to Mayrhofen. Both transport options take an hour, making Mayrhofen a convenient weekend ski break.

Road : Take the Inntalautobahn motorway until the exit for Zillertal, from there take the B169 Zillertal Road for the next 30km to Mayrhofen.

Mayrhofen (630m) is a pretty town, popular for its expansive terrain and lively atmosphere. The 157km of terrain offers plenty of skiing for all levels, as well as an excellent untracked off-piste and one of the best snowparks in the Alps: the Vans Penken Park.

Advanced skiers can invest in a Zillertal Superski Pass to access a further 500km of terrain. The resort draws hundreds of young party-goers in April for the annual Snowbombing festival.

5.  Schladming , Austria

Air : Salzburg Airport 90km/60mins

Public transport : A trolley bus runs from the airport to Salzburg main railway station every 10 minutes during the day. Several direct  OBB  services are available from Salzburg main railway station to Schladming daily. The route takes approximately one hour.

Road : Towards Radstadt on the A10 motorway, then drive 18km along the B320 to Schladming.

Schladming (745m) is part of the Ski Amade ski area (860km). Schladming’s local ski area is spread across four mountains and is ideal for intermediates looking for a weekend ski break. The traffic-free village centre offers plenty of modern facilities.

6.  Villars , Switzerland

Air : Geneva Airport 110km/60mins.

Public transport : From Geneva Airport,  SBB  trains run to Villars-Gryon: via Aigle (120 mins by bus), via Bex (140mins by train). See TPC  for connections between Aigle/Bex to Villars.

Road : Highway A9, exit Aigle (20 mins from the highway). Driving from the airport is the fastest way of getting to this weekend ski break (60 mins).

Villars (1,300m) is a traditional village, both popular with families for its gentle, tree-lined runs and with experts for its steep powder-packed off-piste and high-altitude glacier runs on the Diablerets.

7.  Glenshee , Scotland

Air : Aberdeen Airport 69 miles/90mins; Edinburgh Airport 100 miles/120mins

Public transport : The nearest rail station is Pitlochry, 32 miles away. There is no winter bus service to Glenshee.

Road : Most visitors arrive by car. Glenshee is situated nine miles south of Braemar and 24 miles north of Blairgowrie on the A93 road.

Glenshee has the largest ski lift system in the UK (36 runs/21 lifts). The terrain extends across four mountains and three valleys. At the base of the ski centre you’ll find a cafe, ski hire shop and ski school.

This weekend ski break is located close to Braemar and the royal summer residence of Balmoral. It is a popular day trip for people living in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

8.  Sauze d’Oulx , Italy

Air : Turin Caselle Airport 90km/90mins.

Public transport : Buses run from the airport terminal to the main train station in Turin (Porta Nuova). Tickets for this can be bought from a machine in the arrivals hall and cost around €5. From Porta Nuova you can catch a Trenitalia train to Oulx (1hr). Tickets will be around €15.00. Once at Oulx train station there is a regular bus service to Sauze d’Oulx, cost €5.

Road : Take the A55 towards Susa-Frejus-Oulx-Sauze

Sauze d’Oulx (1,500m) is an attractive, lively village best suited to intermediates and young party-goers. This weekend ski break offers more than enough terrain to occupy all ski levels, being part of the 400-kilometre Milky Way ski area which straddles Italy and France.

9.  Courmayeur , Italy

Air : Geneva Airport 100km/90mins; Turin Caselle Airport 150km/100mins.

Public transport : Take the SBB train from Turin or Geneva to Aosta, then a bus to Courmayeur.

Road : Courmayeur lies just beyond Chamonix in France. It can be easily reached through the Mont Blanc tunnel or by the Grand St. Bernard way above Martigny in Switzerland. The Val D’Aosta tunnel makes it very easy to reach the resort from Aosta or Turin.

Courmayeur (1,224m) is a charming, traffic-free spa town of cobbled streets and pretty buildings. The central Via Roma is lined with bars and upmarket clothes shops. The ski area, although not that high, benefits from good snow cover due to the north or north-west facing slopes. This weekend ski break is best suited to competent skiers, with good off-piste and access to the famous Vallée Blanche.

10.  Morzine , France

Air : Geneva Airport 75km/90mins.

Rail : High-speed SNCF trains run to Cluses or Thonon Les Bains, 30km from this weekend ski break. From there, regular bus transfers are available. From the train station, regular bus transfers are available.

Road : Autoroute Blanche motorway (A40), take the Bonneville or Cluses/Scionzier exit (number 18, 30km from Morzine).

Morzine (1,000m) is a traditional Savoyard village set in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, combining 12 resorts and 650 kilometres of ski runs, which cross over to the Swiss side of the Alps.

Chamonix Balme Ski Area

What do we love about skiing in France?

When you think of a ski holiday, for many, the first place the mind shoots to is the French Alps. France has long been the most popular ski holiday destination for, not only the Brits but skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. This is down to a multitude of factors; with an enviable location in the Alpine region, the world's largest and most varied ski areas, and the most advanced resort infrastructures in the world, it's no wonder then that French ski resorts are consistently at the top of world resort polls for almost everything! Ski Weekends fly to over 21 French ski resorts providing weekend, mid-week and week-long stays to a huge selection of accommodation types. Whether you're after French ski chalets, self-catered apartments, great value 2* hotels, or 4* and 5* luxury, we are certain that you'll find something to meet your preferences and budget requirements. Take a look below at the various French ski resorts we fly to and make your selection!

Ski Weekends resorts in France

Courchevel 1550, courchevel 1850, les menuires, meribel mottaret.

No other ski region on earth quite matches the 3 Valleys. With a whopping 600km of fully inter-connected slopes and terrain for all standards, it is the planet’s largest ski area. Those stunning statistics however only tell part of the story. Each of those three valleys is a ski region in its own right. You can choose between the Courchevel Valley, skiing from the open slopes of sophisticated 1850 into the tree-lined runs which take you into the characterful lower villages, where you’ll find more chalets and lovely 3* hotels. The central Meribel Valley, which has its strong British connections and links to the spa resort of Brides Les Bains . Finally, the Belleville Valley with family-friendly Les Menuires and Reberty , as well as Europe’s highest and most hi-tech ski resort, Val Thorens . The 3 Valleys is on top of the world for more than just its size. The region has been getting better and better every year for decades now, regularly fine-tuning what it offers and how it delivers that service.

For example, millions are spent each summer in building even better, faster and more comfortable lifts to whisk you back up the slopes more efficiently and safely. The Meribel Valley, for example, runs more gondola lifts than any other ski area on earth, and the whole 3 Valleys have invested heavily in special extra safety features on their lifts making them the safest in the world for children to use. Off the slopes there’s a vibrant mix of opportunities in the various resort villages – you can find, some of the largest aprés-ski options in the French Alps and a vast choice of dining possibilities including lots of Michelin-starred choices. It truly is a phenomenal ski region.

Portes du Soleil

The Portes du Soleil ski region – meaning ‘gates of the sun’ – is one of the world’s largest, with 400 miles of groomed piste shared by a dozen ski resorts on both sides of the France-Switzerland border. It’s also one of the most northerly ski regions in the Alps, meaning it’s closer to Geneva and for drivers from the UK and also it has a great snowfall record. Most of the resorts are traditional villages, rich in character and ambience, and they include some of the world’s best-known ski destinations including Morzine and Les Gets . However, France’s only completely car-free purpose-built resort, Avoriaz , is also here. You can enjoy a different ski safari every day!

Espace Killy

Val d'isere.

Val d’Isère is, of course, one of the world’s best-known resorts. Not only is it a member of a very elite group of half a dozen ski areas worldwide which have hosted World Cup, World Championship and Olympic ski events, it’s also one of the world’s top choices for a great ski holiday as it has it all – world-class ski terrain and a superb resort base. It also has an excellent snow record with the high altitude of the village and the glacier-crowned slopes towering above making it a much better bet than most in early and late season.

Sharing the amazing Espace Killy area with neighbouring Val d’Isere, Tignes has been purpose built to offer doorstep skiing to one of the world’s great ski areas. No other French resort has a better opening record. In fact, it’s the only French resort open for most of the autumn, with skiing guaranteed on its glacier slopes from early October through to May. It’s even open for a few months in the heat of summer. Tignes is big enough to offer something for everyone – beginners, piste-mile-crunching intermediates, freestylers looking for the best terrain parks and even the most demanding advanced skiers. Adrenaline junkies will revel in the numerous unusual attractions including a recently added bungee catapult rope – ski, board, or sledge off a downhill ramp and into the void – with the famous elasticated ropes attached. Who could resist that?

Once voted the world’s most popular resort, La Plagne is certainly one of the biggest and best ski resorts out there. It has 10 different base villages ranging from traditional valley villages to state-of-the-art purpose-built ‘ski stations.’ That’s before you consider it’s part of the giant Paradiski region, connected by a spectacular double-decker cable car to neighbouring Les Arcs and creating one of the world’s three biggest ski regions in the process with 425km of piste between them. This massive area covers every type of terrain imaginable and is also one of the planet’s most snowsure, thanks to high altitude, glacier-capped slopes at the top of its huge lift-served vertical. For advanced skiers and snowboarders, the freeride terrain down from the Bellecôte is a must-ride, and everyone should have at least one go on the Olympic Bobsleigh Run where various options include a taxi-bob ride behind a professional driver in a proper bob, or going down with three friends in a self-steering bob raft.

Haute Savoie

Megève.

The Haute Savoie region is home to some fantastic resorts, including Chamonix , Megève , Flaine ,  Les Houches and La Clusaz . Possibly the most famous, no other ski resort has quite the global appeal of Chamonix. Located below Western Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, and a favourite with Brits for over 150 years, it’s not only one of the best ski areas on Earth, it’s, fortunately, one of the quickest and easiest to reach too!

Megeve is another great option. The original leading French resort, Megève was modelled as a ski resort to rival Switzerland’s St Moritz and it succeeds in being the chicest and atmospheric of French ski areas, centred on its ancient square and cobbled streets. You’ll find enticing shops and gourmet restaurants here – indeed Megve has a reputation for offering the best dining in the French Alps (which some argue means the entire European Alps).

Located in a famed snow pocket and within a giant powder bowl, Flaine’s founders really knew what they were doing when they created this great resort five decades ago; they even had the foresight to locate it as close as they could to Geneva Airport for very quick and easy access for a ski weekend.

Nicknamed by the Ski Weekends team as 'the hidden gem of the French Alps' La Clusaz is fast becoming known as the resort that ticks all of the boxes. Known for being one of the most authentic feeling French resorts, as well as one of the quickest and easiest to reach from the UK and from Geneva Airport, La Clusaz is also one of the oldest French ski destinations and has one of the most extensive ski areas for a traditional French resort.

Loneleat has a very good ethical and ecology record too. They are a very sustainable organisation and their animal welfare is top notch.

Westonbirt Arboretum

coach day trips from bristol

Located in the Cotswolds, the Westonbirt Arboretum boasts an amazing collection of trees from all over the world. Spend your day exploring some of the many nature trails, identifying flora and fauna using the Westonbirt Arboretum’s Plant and Flower Spotter’s Guide, or snap drool-worthy photos along the Picture Perfect trail.

While this is an amazing place to cool down in summer, there are also fun activities for all seasons, including a Christmas light show, a tree top walkway and Gruffalo trail for the kids. The site also features an on-site shop, restaurant and outdoor play areas. Basically, there really is something for everyone here which is why we love it!

Cheddar Gorge

cheddar gorge bristol

Cheese and nature lovers unite and make your way to Cheddar Gorge! At 137m (449ft) deep and 4.8km (2.98 miles) long, Cheddar Gorge is the largest gorge in England. This is also the place where Cheddar Man, the oldest complete human skeleton in Britain was found. Two records in one!

Surrounded by natural beauty, the best way to enjoy this gorge is by taking a circular 4-mile walk. The national trust recommended route takes you past the pinnacles and caves, and provides stunning views.

After some good fresh air, make your way to a cheese making tour and learn the history of the iconic cheese named after the area. Don’t forget to try a few samples too.

Glastonbury Tor Walk

glastonbury tor walk

Free day trips from Bristol can provide breathtaking views and a full day’s entertainment without splashing any cash. The Glastonbury Tor Walk, for example, is one of the best hikes in Somerset, and that’s saying something! This popular walk takes you from the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey to the summit of Glastonbury Tor.

The circular walk is around 2 miles and there is a fairly moderate climb to the top of the hill. At the top you’ll find St Michael’s Tower, an old 15th century church tower with some of the best views of England.

One of the best bits about this walk is you’ll end up in Glastonbury itself. That means you can finish off your walk with a pub lunch or afternoon tea.

bristol day trips

With its gorgeous 18 th century Georgian architecture, Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage City, in fact the only one in the UK. Located just 13 miles away, Bath is very easy to get to from Bristol. What makes this day trip even better is that there are great public transport connections between the two cities and it is very easy exploring Bath on foot, so you don’t need a car for this one.

The Roman Baths are of course a key place to visit, however Bath offers so much more. While you’re here, take a stroll through Queens Square, enjoy the architecture of the houses in Circus and Royal Crescent areas, visit the Bath Abbey and enjoy the views at Pulteney Weir.

One of the best ways of experience Bath is on a walking tour of the city . On a tour like this you’ll see all the top sites – this tour also includes entry into the Roman Baths afterwards too which is a bonus.

Arlington Row, Bibury in the Cotswolds

Have you been picturing yourself tiptoeing down cobbled streets, surrounded by quaint stone houses with thatched roofs? Or perhaps taking cream teas by the river? Then the Cotswolds are the villages near Bristol to visit for you.

Located 55 miles north-east of Bristol, the Cotswolds are made up of many villages and towns, each seemingly more gorgeous that the last! But where to start?

With a small river running through the centre, boutique shopping and cream teas a plenty, Burton-On-Water is a great pick. For quintessential cobbled streets, stone houses, thatched roofs, and English pubs, make your way to Castle Comb. Go to Stow-on-the-Wold for tea rooms, manors and museums, or Tetbury for a round of antiquing. You can discover the best villages in the Cotswolds in our blog post here.

Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey

llanddwyn island wales

Llanddwyn Island isn’t quite an island – it’s just about attached to the mainland – but it does offer some of the best views of the stunning North Wales coastline.

One of the highlights here is the Tŵr Mawr lighthouse (that’s ‘Great Tower lighthouse’ in English). This is an old lighthouse that dates back to 1845 and it’s become one of the most photogenic spots in Wales.

It’s also the perfect place to spot some wildlife. Seals are often seen relaxing in the sun on the rocks below. Also, if you’re lucky, you can see dolphins and occasionally minke whales in the area too. This is genuinely one of my favourite spots in Wales. If you get here on a hot and sunny day it definitely does not feel like you’re in the UK at all!

Weston-Super-Mare

weston super mare

Just 18 miles south-west of Bristol, and conveniently connected by public transport, sits the Victorian seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare. Providing long stretches of beach, ice cream stands and donkey rides, a day trip here should be on your list of what to do near Bristol. Especially during the summer when it is a real holiday hotspot.

The town itself also offers plenty to keep you entertained. For example, visiting The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens which is complete with moat and drawbridge. Or visiting The Grand Pier, an indoor amusement park set over the water, great for families on rainy days.

Wookey Hole

fun day trips from bristol

Looking for fun day trips from Bristol for families? Then come and explore the world from underground at Wookey Hole . Wookey Hole’s main attraction is a system of underground caves. In fact, they are the largest show caves in England!

Now lit up and equipped with walking paths, this system of caves was once home to cavemen thousands of years ago. More than just caves, admission includes access to mini golf, mirror mazes and a fairy garden. You can also walk through the valley of dinosaurs, play on vintage penny arcade machines and enjoy indoor and outdoor play areas. As I said, this is such a great place for families – all you big kids will love it too.

day tours from bristol

The city of Salisbury, on the south eastern side of Wiltshire is steeped with history. In fact, the Salisbury Cathedral is home to one of the original Magna Cartas! The medieval cathedral itself is the place of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands each year, and it has the tallest spire in Britain.

Be sure to take some time wandering the streets and admiring the buildings that have stood here for hundreds of years. Including a stroll through the High Street Gate, built in the early 1300s and was once used to lock up convicted criminals. Then head over to 700-year-old The Haunch of Venison for a spot of lunch that will delight your taste buds.

Tintern Abbey

villages near bristol to visit

Just over the border in Wales on the banks of the River Wye sits the Tintern Abbey. This majestic ruin was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow for Cistercian monks.

In 1537 the abbey was dissolved and has since been left to nature’s forces. Though roofless, the walls are standing and you can still spot many distinctive features of this Early English to Decorated Gothic style structure.

Take a guided history tour, wander through the surrounding countryside and enjoy refreshments at the on-site cafe.
