Planning a photo safari in Africa: 7 essential tips

Planning a photo safari in Africa ? Based on my knowledge and experience as a photographer, responsible traveler , and wildlife enthusiast, I share 7 essential tips that help you plan and prepare a photo-focused safari trip , where it's all about capturing beautiful and high-quality images of your safari adventure and wildlife sightings.

If you have been on an African safari before, you will be aware of the conflict that can occur when traveling with people with different interests. For people with a special interest in (learning) wildlife photography in Africa, I would recommend looking into a photography safari trip, rather than a regular safari. I wrote an article about the difference between a photo safari and a regular safari .

What is a photo safari?

On a photo safari all circumstances that can be influenced, are created in a way to get the best out of your photography. It’s all about going to the right place at the right times, in different lights, getting the best position to photograph from the right (and different) angles, and spending more time at one sighting to observe and get that perfect shot. The more time you spend with the animals, who are telling their story, the better your photos. On a photographic journey, you will not be rushing to tick off the ' Big 5 ' game animals. You will also be out during the ‘magic golden hours’ around sunset and sunrise.

Apart from that, you will learn from a professional photographer who helps to improve your photography skills. If you are traveling in a group, you can also learn from other wildlife photography enthusiasts. Another plus of photography safaris is that many game drive vehicles are designed and configured specifically for wildlife photography with more space to maneuver.

Joining a photo safari doesn't mean you have to be an experienced photographer. On most photography trips it doesn't matter if you're a beginner, intermediate or professional photographer. Having an interest in photography is the basis of what you need for most of these photo trips.

Planning a photo safari group tour or private tour

Whether you love to travel in a group or with a private company, there are always a few important things to consider before you book your trip. If you have never been to Africa, I wouldn't recommend planning your safari trip on your own. Feel free to reach out for advice to help you create a personalized travel plan, or to join me on one of my upcoming photo safari tours .

Now you know what to expect from a photographic safari in Africa, it’s time to dig into the most important things to know and consider for planning and preparing your photo-focused safari. Here are my 7 valuable tips for planning your African photography safari .

1. Create an overview of your wishes

As a traveler, you are the only one that can decide what’s important to you, and how you want to spend your money.

To make that clear, you need to d o research and create an overview of your wishes . From there, you can start making choices. Consider which aspects are most essential for you. Keep in mind that every aspect can influence the price.

You can make a start by answering the following questions:

• Where do I want to go? (Country, safari destinations, number of places)
• When do I want to go? (high-, low-, rain-, dry-season)
• Do I like to travel in a group or private?
• What’s my budget?
• What accommodation can I afford (Budget, comfort, luxury)
• How long will I be traveling?
• Do I want to organize it all by myself or book an organized trip?
• What would I like to see and do?

2. Choose the right time to travel

As you might know, Africa has a wet and dry season and offers variations of climates and weather in different countries and areas. The dry season in Africa is the most popular as well as the most crowded season. The best advantage of traveling in the dry season is that animals are frequently found around water pools because of the scarcity of water. In the dry season, the temperatures are high and landscapes are usually dry.

However, some photographers find the wet season in Africa the best time to photograph because of the dramatic skies, green scenery, better light (because of clouds), and less dust. This is also a great period for capturing newborns.

I’ve traveled to Africa in both seasons and in different months. I always try to go in the shoulder seasons , in between dry and wet seasons. Choosing the best time to travel also depends on your personal wishes, budget, and safari destination. Kenya is for example an all-year-round safari destination, while other countries, for example, Uganda , are harder to travel during certain times of the year because of heavy rains.

3. Choose a reliable and qualified photo safari operator

After you defined your wishes, it’s time to select the right tour operator or organization to travel with and choose destinations and accommodations to stay in. I always attach great importance to organizations with a focus on conservation efforts, sustainability, and responsible travel choices . I personally do my best to select and collaborate with local organizations and try to look for unique, more private experiences, where they also give back to nature and the surrounding communities.

Do your research to ensure that your trip will meet, or even exceed your expectations.  Always search for valuable reviews, ask specific questions in advance to know what to expect to check the reliability, and follow your gut. If you are planning your first African safari trip, feel free to contact me for help or simply join me on one of my group safari trips to Africa . You can even form your own group of max 6 people to accommodate greater flexibility in addressing your preferences regarding the travel period and dates.

Good photography focussed safari companies will offer a 4x4 vehicle with enough space inside, large windows, and a pop-up roof. The luxury photographic companies usually offer a specially-equipped photographic vehicle with sliding gimbals, removable doors, and photography equipment to borrow. Some companies also have the permission to enter National Parks and Game Reserves after opening hours, which is great for an evening game drive or night photography.

4. Find a guide with an eye for photography

Normally you cannot choose your guide for your safari, but by doing detailed research, like searching for reviews and references, you can increase your chances of finding a guide with an eye for photography.

Guides with an interest and eye for photography will understand how to get you in the right position for a perfect shot. They will anticipate the lights and movements of the animals, and they will always find the best positioning for the vehicle. To get the best out of your photography, your guide has to be committed to leaving in the early morning and staying out for a longer amount of time than on a regular game drive.

Use your guide’s knowledge to capture the best photos. Local guides perfectly know the animal’s habits, territories, and behavior. Tell your guide what’s important for you and what kind of photos you would like to capture. Take advantage of their knowledge and advice!

5. The right photography gear for a photo safari

If you are an advanced photographer, I would definitely recommend bringing one, or preferably two, DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras with exchangeable lenses .

With two cameras (bodies) and different lenses, you can easily switch cameras. For example, when wildlife comes closer, or you want to capture an animal in different contexts, like a wide shot to capture wildlife in its environment and close-ups. In the worst case, when anything happens to one camera, you have a second to continue photographing.

Zoom lens and wide-angle lens

The best zoom lenses for wildlife photography are in the range of 200-600 mm. Zoom lenses with a focal length of 300+ mm are great for capturing wild animals or birds, while more wide-angled lenses are great to capture the beautiful environment or stunning African sunsets. For a crop camera, a zoom lens of 300mm should be ideal. If you’re using a full-frame camera, I would suggest a lens that can reach 400mm zoom. If you are a keen birder, then the more zoom your lens has, the better. For example, 600mm is perfect for bird photography .

Keep in mind that Africa’s wildlife is most active in the early morning and late evening, which means the lights can be challenging. For that reason, it will be better to bring lenses with larger apertures (f/2.8) and to use a camera that can increase the ISO without getting too much noise in your photo.

Other photography accessories

Apart from the camera and lenses, it's advisable to bring photography accessories like an external hard drive to secure your photos, plenty of memory cards, extra batteries, cleaning wipes, a charger, a camera bag, and a rain cover. To provide stability for your camera, you can also bring a beanbag, monopod, and/or tripod on safari.

6. Know your camera

Having the most expensive camera doesn’t mean you’ll shoot the best images because whatever camera you bring, it’s extremely important to know how to use it. You will be disappointed if you invested a lot of money in camera gear and your pictures are too dark or blurry.

To practice and learn how to use your camera, you can read the instruction manual, watch some tutorials on YouTube, and most importantly  practice with different settings and conditions  before you're going on a photo safari to Africa. Practice on your dog, take photos in a park or forest, and do whatever you can to get more familiar with your camera and its features. It’s essential to understand the different settings to adjust to different conditions.

If you don’t have the time, motivation, skills, or if there’s any other reason why it’s not possible to learn how to make good photos, please save your money and enjoy the experience. You can try to take photos with your smartphone or a compact (zoom) camera because nowadays, the cameras on smartphones and compact cameras are pretty good. The most important thing is that you have an interest in (learning) photography.

7. Make a suitable itinerary

Photographic safaris often manage a slow and sustainable travel approach to spend enough time at the right places at the right times. The less time you spend in transit, the more time you’ll have for spending on your destination, being in the moment, and encountering and capturing incredible wildlife. On regular safaris, you usually visit more destinations, which means more time in transit. Another big advantage of slow travel is minimizing your impact on the environment and maximizing your appreciation and connection with the local community and their environment . I would always recommend spending at least three nights at each safari accommodation.

For photography, it’s extremely important to have time and patience. Wildlife is unpredictable and not always active.

When planning your trip, find a good balance between the number of destinations and the time you want to spend photographing wildlife on game drives .

WHERE NEW YORK DELI MEETS PARISIAN CAFE

Centrally placed within the grounds, overlooking the luxurious Kigwa lagoon pool and inland beach, the Café Kigwa blends the bustle of a New York deli with the chic of a Parisian street café. Dishes range from burgers to salads and from pastas to kebabs, with a feature of international culinary delights. A sumptuous buffet selection for breakfast and lunch is served at the restaurant.

KOREAN CORNER

Far Eastern visitors will be delighted to know that we have now extended our Anglo-American breakfast to incorporate a Korean Corner, which has been specially designed to meet the tastes of our increasing numbers of Korean, Chinese and Japanese guests. The Korean Corner offers, amongst other delights; Wakame (traditional seaweed soup) and traditional Korean kimchi.

There was something for everybody

ALOT of meeting spaces for different sized groups

For anybody concerned about it being a Resort and Casino, the casino is really hidden off in one corner, I never noticed it the entire time I was there other than exploring to figure out where things were. The bedrooms didn't have A/C which was not an issue for us except one person who is always hot. 

There were a LOT of meeting spaces for different sized groups - they could accommodate a large group (300 plus) for a meeting.

Guest Relations Team are Phenomenal

Stayed 8 nights for meetings. The Guest Relations team at the entrance are phenomenal. The porter Paul Mwaka went out of his way to accommodate my special requests, was very attentive to the point of taking notes to make sure he got things right. Daniel too was very kind and supportive and whatever may not have gone quite right was somehow made better by this team.

Huge complex in beautiful gardens

Stayed here 3 nights for a big workshop, and enjoyed the stay. The hotel (well outside Nairobi city center) is enormous and spread out over large lush grounds, with lots of greenery, different buildings containing rooms, several restaurants, a casino, reception, bars, etc. As we were in all-day meetings we did not leave the hotel grounds, so I appreciated that the grounds were so lush and big, with lovely pools and walking paths (looking more like a resort than a conference hotel).

Had one of the best African experiences ever. The Nyama choma ranch atmosphere was electric, the dancers put the icing on the cake... Our waiter Elijah was charming , friendly from the word go, he got me to swear that I'll be back again at the Ranch😂😂 , he made the whole experience wonderful. He is a Five star ⭐

Super excellent service. Amazing ambience, well manicured gardens and great food. The experience at the gym was super amazing as well. Kind and professional service from Christine Mugo at the reception. Keep it up!!

Great resort, easy to get to & friendly staff

Stayed with the kids for just two nights on route to a lodge in the National Park. Breakfast was really good, fantastic coffee. Swimming pool was clean but a little chilly. Rooms were good but we had booked for twin rooms and there was only one bed in each room, but it was fine as the kids just stayed in the same room. Check in was really easy. Very friendly staff.

For the safety of guests and animals, please leave glass, aluminum cans, straws and alcohol at home. Although no large ice chests are allowed, personal coolers are acceptable. 1. Hutan Cempaka

Hutan Cempaka bisa menjadi tempat  ngopi  dan bersantai setelah dari Taman Safari Prigen.

Jarak Hutan Cempaka dan Taman Safari Prigen sekitar 2,8 kilometer, tujuh menit dengan kendaraan.

Hutan Cempaka berada di hutan pinus dengan bangunan unik rumah joglo, terdapat area  indoor  yang nyaman serasa di rumah jaman dulu, dan area  outdoor.

Hutan Cempaka menyediakan menu minuman seperti kopi tubruk ireng, kopi susu, wedang jahe, es klepon, dan wedang cempaka.

Hutan Cempaka juga menyediakan menu makanan, yaitu urap-urap, nasi bakar, mie nyemek, tempe mendoan, dan ayam goreng kalasan.

2. Grande Garden Cafe

Grande Garden Cafe mempunyai area  outdoor  yang luas dengan pemandangan pegunungan dan udaranya sejuk.

Grande Garden Cafe berjarak 3,4 kilometer dari Taman Safari Prigen, dapat ditempuh selama delapan menit perjalanan.

Grande Garden Cafe menyediakan menu minuman, yaitu kopi robusta, kopi arabika, kopi robusta joss, kopi jahe, es thai tea, dan smoothies mango banana.

Sementara menu makanan di Grande Garden Cafe, yaitu chicken steak jamur, udang asam manis, ikan dori telur asin, blukutuk lele, dan tomyam soup.

3. Cafe E

Cafe E memiliki pemandangan pegunungan dan sawah yang hijau, tempatnya nyaman dan dengan area  outdoor  dan  indoor .

Cafe E menyediakan menu minuman non kopi dan kopi, yaitu black coffee, java caffe latte, moccaccino, sunrise mojito, choco frappe, dan wedang uwuh.

Menu makanan di Cafe E terdapat ayam geprek, spaghetti carbonara, crispy tofu, dan traditional cireng.

Cafe E berjarak 6,6 kilometer dari Taman Safari Prigen, sekitar 14 menit perjalanan dengan kendaraan.

4. Cafe Sumber Tumpeng

Embong Bunder Cafe bisa menjadi pilihan lokasi bersantai sambil menikmati kopi dan pemandangan pegunungan.

Welcome to the Savannah Café!

Howzit! Before you head out on safari or settle into an evening in your luxury tent, join us for a meal at the Savannah Café. When you dine with us, you’re sharing an experience inspired by the legendary South African Braai (pronounced “bry,” in case you were wondering). A mainstay of South African tradition, the braai has expanded to become part of the cultural life of many neighboring nations and now we’re pleased to offer our Sonoma County take on this storied tradition!

While braai can be described as a close cousin of our own American barbecue tradition, it is also much more. It’s an excuse to get together, catch up with some old friends and make a few new ones. Christmas, birthday parties, bridal showers, or any old Thursday, there’s no wrong time to braai!

The rules to a good braai are simple:

• This is a social occasion. The more the merrier!
• Grilling is imperative and should be done over a wood fire.
• Sides, sides, and more sides!
• “Dop” or drinks are a must. Grilling is thirsty work after all.

Here at the Savannah Café, we’re making braaing a daily event. Lunch and dinner will always include savory smells rising from our custom built wood-fired grill and a huge assortment of delicious sides and desserts. We offer beer, wine, and other beverages. With abundant seating on our expansive terrace, dinner at Safari West is a chance to get to know your fellow adventurers and enjoy the culinary creations of the Savannah Café.

*Meals reservations must be made as part of a safari or overnight reservation. The Savannah Café is a reservation-only facility and cannot accommodate walk-ins. Please call to confirm availability during January and February.

Groups of 10 or more, there will be an automatic 18% service charge which goes directly to the restaurant staff. It will be added on and charged to the credit card on file once the reservations department receives your confirmation.

1. Khachapuri

2. Funny Cabany

This airy, village-style cafe will treat you to some creative European foods and tons of cuteness. When its mascot, an adorable minipig Funny starts roaming the place, her nose sniffing diners’ shoes and her tail wagging non-stop like a helicopter rotor, no kid or adult can resist the charm.  Lunching office workers take pics, /mommies and daddies let children indulge in cuddling and wine-sipping downtown girls reach to pat the fuzzy hostess. Funny, however, rather fancies her work buddies – mainly since they adore her back and know exactly how she likes her ears rubbed.

3. Kavkazskaya Plennitsa 

To soak up true soviet ambiance and try rich Georgian cuisine, go no further than Kavakazskaya plennitsa - a restaurant themed on the iconic Russian comedy "Kidnapping. Caucasian style." While one if its halls reproduces the film scenes in an old-school carpets-on-the-wall setting, another will take you to the beautiful countryside of Georgia with authentic stone ovens, hand-woven rugs - and live chickens clucking quietly in a mini-coop. They aren’t there just for charm though - they lay eggs like any other chicks, and those can be taken directly to your plate.

To bring back memories of your blissful countryside childhood, go no further than “Shinok” - a downtown restaurant that recreates an idyllic Ukrainian village and boasts its own mini-farm. Majestic peacocks rest on a thriving tree; rabbits and chickens roam in the grass next to a big docile cow; and a Ukrainian-dressed woman keeps them all company. And there is, of course, a disturber of the peace, the mischievous billy goat named Gipsy who just fools around and keeps bothering everyone in hope someone would play with him. 

Nestled among embassies and old town mansions at 5 minutes’ walk from Arbat, Elargi is a true snug oasis in the heart of the bustling city. With its own flowered, greenery-filled courtyard, it feels less like an eatery and more like your Gran’s summer cottage, so don’t be surprised to see some four-legged diners. A cuddly she-goat Lucy and her bunny mates live right in the garden and will make your heart melt as here, sharp-dressed businessmen and power-lunching CEOs suddenly find themselves patting and feeding the furry cuties right next to exhilarated kids.

6. Uzbekistan

This restaurant falls nothing short of a true 1001 nights palace: huge dining halls rather remind of Aladdin’s settings with their relief paintings, ornate lights and embroidered furnishings - all handcrafted by best masters from various corners of Asia. The food option is just as rich and covers a wide range of cuisines from Middle East to China but specializes - you guessed it - in Uzbek delicacies including its signature pilaf.  And if dining in a full-on sultan mode is not to your taste, you will find a perfect quiet spot in the riad - an interior garden where you can feast your eyes on two magnificent peafowls.

 7. Tinatin

Warm, all-wooden interiors lit with antique chandeliers, ornate stairs and carved balconies, countless rooms, nooks and crannies - this 4-storey restaurant looks like it could have a hidden door to Narnia. Well, it will take you on a culinary trip to a land no less magical – the beautiful Georgia since that’s where all the recipes come from – as the owner says, right from her Grandma’s cooking book. And while drooling over Caucasian delicacies, don’t be surprised to hear some cheerful chirping – the attic is home to a bunch of playful parrots which will liven up your business lunch and help melt the ice at your first date.

8. Lucky Lori

Remember that time you begged mom for a guinea pig? Well, in Lucky Lori your child dreams may come true as they have a whole set of traditional home pets - a nice and sociable cavy, a chinchilla, a hamster and a parrot, all rather friendly to visitors. Another plus – you get to experience the unique Russian concept of time cafes where you pay not for food, but for the time spent. So, while the supply of tea, coffee and biscuits is limitless, you can bring your own snacks to have a games night with friends, or watch movies on a projector, or just work on your laptop in a relaxing ambiance. 

9. Ezheminutka

Who said pets should be soft and fluffy? This anti-café opted for prickly ones hosting a dozen African pygmy hedgehogs which will give a thrill to kids and adults alike. When these critters start roaming around sniffing, snuffing and puffing, there’s hardly a single person who can resist their charm. A visit here could also help you educate your kids about nature as, before visitors are allowed to play with the spiny creatures, staff members instruct them on the rules and will offer guidance afterwards. Beware, cat and dog lovers: you might leave this place a fully converted “hedgehog person”.

 10. Zaicafe

Loads of long-eared, fluffy cuteness awaits you in Zaycafe, another pay-per-minute joint where a host of buoyant bunnies will make your time fly. You can pet stylish ginger white Hermione, or brush Lev Nikolayevich, or get a photo op with the other bunnies – needless to say, these fur balls will likely explode from your Instagram. And if you seek something more than a playing session, the café holds regular lectures and workshops on how to take proper care of these pets. Do take note – you will inevitably want to take one of these cuties home, and, luckily, Zaycafe does offer them up for adoption.

 11. Owl House

You might not have a lightning bolt scar, but you still can make friends with your own Hedwig at Moscow’s Owl House anti-cafe. There are eight birds from long-eared owl Morty – actually named after Lord Voldemort, though much kinder and not lacking a nose – to cheeky polar owl Sirius that will likely challenge you to a shouting contest. The owls are acquired from breeders, so are rather used to humans, but you will have to book a visit in advance – that helps the café limit the number of guests, and keep the animals well rested.

12. Kotiki I Lyudi 

As biggest feline fans in the world, Russians have cat cafes all across the country. Most of them take cats from shelters in hopes of then placing them in a loving family. The idea seems to work - the oldest cat café in Moscow, Kotiki y Lyudi, has found a new home for 300 pets since it opened in 2015 and keeps rescuing moggies from the streets. But even if you aren’t ready to be a cat parent, do come for a therapeutic petting and purring session and have the graceful felines jump on your lap or stretch out right on your table.
