Victoria is most famous for its innate British sensibility and spectacular colonial architecture .

So what better way to explore the city than from British-style double decker buses?

Furthermore, Victoria is located in Canada’s only Mediterranean climate zone . This means you can expect temperate, dry summers .

Unlike London, here we can safely drop the top down – and the kids really love this.

What you get with your Victoria double decker bus tour:

  • Double Decker Bus
  • Open top, enclosed lower-level
  • Fully narrated tour (English only)
  • Wheelchair/stroller accessible (lower-level only)
  • Smartphone vouchers accepted
  • Fully interactive customizable brochure

Tips For Taking the Victoria Tourist Bus

1) Purchase your tickets online

Buying your tickets in advance is convenient, allows you to avoid queues, and most importantly saves you $3.00 per ticket.

2) Plan to use your Victoria bus tour ticket on day one

I always make sure to place tours of any variety towards the front end of my travel itinerary. This rule holds true for every city I visit – and Victoria is no exception.

If you can take the trip on your first day of arrival you’ll quickly become oriented to the city’s layout. You’ll also get tips from the tour guides and other travelers to improve the rest of your trip.

4) Expect good weather but plan for the worst

The Victoria Hop on Hop Off tour operates year round, rain or shine. So be sure to be prepared for whatever mother nature has to offer.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water to protect you from the sun, particularly in the dead of summer. Those particularly sensitive to the sun can also opt to sit in the bus’s enclosed lower level.

Conversely, you should also prepare for the worst. Read the Victoria weather forecast and bring a light jacket and umbrella just in case.

Victoria may be drier than other British Columbia cities but the west coast is still quite rainy.

5) Listen to your driver/other passengers

The Victoria hoho bus is brought to life by a fully narrated tour from a knowledgeable guide – so don’t go plugging in your headphones to listen to music.

Here, you’ll learn interesting tidbits about the city’s history and culture. And you’ll also gain valuable information for the remainder of your trip.

Moreover, you’ll also receive a customized interactive brochure to provide further guidance on Victoria’s main attractions. You’ll be an expert in no time.

In addition, other passengers can also be a valuable source of information.

You’d be surprised how many people have taken the Victoria bus tour multiple times – or how many locals are riding. They might just give you that dynamite dinner recommendation that helps you experience Victoria on a whole new level.

6) Board at lesser known stops

If you’re planning on getting on at The Empress, Chinatown, or Beacon Hill Park during peak season you might have a bit of a wait, or maybe even a fight for the better seats upstairs.

Victoria’s City Centre is quite small and easily walkable. Thus many lesser known stops can be located a relatively short distance from their more popular counterparts. Try and get on there.

Traveler Reviews

We took the evening tour on the big bus. It's supposed to be about an hour and a half. It took around an hour and 10 minutes. But that is not a problem. We covered a lot of ground and saw a lot of Victoria. The recorded information that was played during the tour was detailed and there was not a lot of quiet time. So needless to say we found out a lot about Victoria. The bus was full, so I'm glad we took a taxi for a flat rate of $10 to downtown at the starting point of the tour. The bus was nearly full when we departed, at around our second or third stop it did stop at the bus stop near the cruise terminal. The remaining people did wind up fitting on the bus but they were separated from one another. So I recommend you go down to the ticket booth in town. It is near the visitor center. When the bus arrived it was a lot more rundown than the other tour companies. When we stepped on board and sat in our seats it was similar to a modified elementary school size bus. I am about 5'11" and my knees could not fit without turning sideways otherwise I would hit the seat in front of me. The back half of the bus is open, the front half of the bus has a roof over it. The driver was very nice. So if you are not tall, and you don't mind driving in a less pretty bus, it was a good price.

Its 45 minutes between buses and u have no idea if its early or late. The schedule is a guide. The audio recording and drivers are hard to hear.

We visited Victoria 1 day while on a cruise. We purchased the tickets several months prior. We walked about 25 minutes from the pier to the initial bus stop, which was expected. We arrived around 10:30 am and were told the next bus would show up around 11 am. The bus showed up full with no seats. About half the people got off the bus just to validate their ticket and got right back on. There were about 30 people waiting to get on. No one was able to get on the bus. My wife decided to walk to the China town bus stop for the tour and arrived 10 minutes prior to the scheduled bus arrival. We waited 30 minutes and never saw a bus. We decided to walk 30 minutes to see a castle since the bus was useless. After viewing the castle, we waited at the bus stop for one last hope. We arrived about 10 minutes prior to the scheduled bus arrival and waited 30 minutes. The bus never showed up. A different hop on hop off bus company, the grey line, arrived and they let us get a ride back to the city center area. This was by far the worst hop-on hop-off company. I would not recommend to anyone.

We didn't get off the cruise ship until 8p (fault of cruise ship)…...then Customs is a long walk from the pier.....and my husband is disabled (uses a walker with wheels)…...and we never made it to customs (just too hard on him)….[we couldn't bring Carnival's wheel chair off the ship]……..so we turned around and went back to the ship!!!!!!…….so we paid for nothing......not Viator's fault...…...But, it is not a short walk!!!!!!!......and Carnival should be more organized and get disabled people off first!!!!…….Very sad that we missed Victoria!!!...….I gave it a 1 because we never got to take the tour...….I'm sure it was fabulous, though.

Public tours offer behind-the-scenes look at city government in Victorville

Victorville city leaders are offering free bus tours for those interested in knowing more about how city government works.

The four-hour guided “VV101 Bus Tour” is being offered June 11, 24, and 27 for visitors to check out operations, services, and strategic priorities in Victorville.

Attendees will be among a very select few to drive the apron at the Southern California Logistics Airport or to walk the campus of the new Victorville Wellness Center, city officials stated.

“In contrast to a typical citizens academy that can take 12 weeks to complete, we’ve designed this quick, guided tour to give our community valuable insight and to connect about important strategic initiatives,” Victorville Mayor Liz Becerra said.

Also included in the tour is how the city budget works, plans for Old Town, infrastructure projects, capital improvements, community services, and a visit to the materials recovery facility.

Participants will meet at Victorville City Hall for an introduction and then board a climate-controlled bus for the tour. Opportunities will be provided to exit the bus to walk through various facilities. Refreshments will be provided.

For more information and to register, visit  vv.city/Bustour . Questions can be directed to the city Public Information Office at 760- 955-1681.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

city tour bus victoria

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

city tour bus victoria

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

city tour bus victoria

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

city tour bus victoria

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
