Oh, I love this idea. I already take individual packets of matcha tea and collagen, but often have a hard time making clean hot water (using a used coffee maker is not the vibe).

Given that my travelling has been limited to the US and staying in hotels or with family, I really hadn’t thought much about being able to have my morning coffee and evening tea when I’m not at home. In our tests, we found very little variation in the amount of time it took to bring a full kettle of water (1.7 L) to a boil—about 7 minutes on average. We were also impressed with this kettle’s accuracy in holding water at a set temperature. It has six preset temperature choices, each with a dedicated button, plus a “keep warm” function, which holds water at the set temperature for 30 minutes. The three-year warranty is also quite generous compared with those of similarly priced electric kettles we’ve looked at.

The Breville IQ Kettle looks great and works well, too. It has five temperature presets, each with a button on the base of the kettle, and a 20-minute “keep warm” function. And rather than being a closed loop, the handle is open at the bottom, making it just a little more accessible. We don’t think these features are worth the price jump over the Cuisinart CPK-17 (especially since the IQ has only a one-year warranty). But for someone who prioritizes a more streamlined look or an ergonomic handle, the price difference might be worth it.

The Cuisinart GK-1 Digital Gooseneck Kettle is accurate and fast, and it’s more comfortable to use than other similarly priced gooseneck kettles. The willowy spout gives you the control necessary for executing the perfect pour-over, and the rounded handle is easy to grasp, resulting in a smoother, more precise pour. The controls are intuitive and allow you to adjust the water temperature in five-degree increments, and a “keep warm” function holds the temperature for 30 minutes before automatically shutting off. The kettle has an all-steel body and lid, which makes it a great option for the plastic-avoidant. Also, in matte black this kettle looks attractive when kept on the counter.

We recommend the inexpensive Hamilton Beach 40880 Stainless Steel 1.7 Liter Kettle for anyone who’d prefer not to break the bank but wants a decent kettle for boiling water. Getting a variable-temperature electric kettle is the key to immediately improving your hot-drink game, whether you’re a tea connoisseur or a coffee nerd.

Different varieties of tea are intended to be brewed at specific temperatures. Though exact temperatures are up for debate and come down to personal preference, the general rule is that more-delicate leaves require cooler water. So green tea, for example, should steep at a temperature that is markedly lower than the rolling boil black tea requires.

The ideal temperature for brewing a clean, balanced cup of coffee—whether with a pour-over dripper or a French press—is also below boiling: The Specialty Coffee Association recommends somewhere around 200 °F . If you’re mainly interested in brewing coffee, you might also consider purchasing an electric gooseneck kettle, specifically designed for pour-overs. If you’re not a coffee or tea aficionado, you may want a no-frills basic model that simply boils water. We have a pick for that, too. A great electric kettle should hit temperatures quickly and accurately, and it should preferably come with a few special features that make it pleasant and easy to use. Over our years of research and testing since first writing this guide, in 2013, we’ve settled on the following criteria:

Simple controls: Bringing water to a boil shouldn’t be rocket science. We looked for kettles with intuitive controls that were simple to start at the push of a button. Not all models we tested came with multiple temperature settings, but for those that did, we looked for clearly marked and easily adjustable settings. We’ve also found it especially helpful when guides—with ideal temperatures for various beverages—are printed on the machine, instead of hidden in the manual.

Accurate: For kettles with multiple temperature settings, reasonable accuracy is important because there’s no point in aiming for 200 °F and hitting 212 °F instead.

Fast: You don’t want to wait forever for your water to heat, and we’ve seen quite a range during tests, with kettles taking anywhere from under 3 minutes to a sleepy 7 minutes and counting to boil one liter of water. Ideally, we looked for models that brought a liter to a boil in 5 minutes or less.

Pours cleanly: Basic kettles should be able to pour into a mug without splashing or dribbling. With gooseneck kettles, which are primarily intended for making pour-over coffee, we looked for models that gave us a high level of control over the speed and direction of the stream.

Minimal plastic: We tested kettles made primarily from stainless steel, glass, or ceramic. Some people, including our experts, complain about plastic kettles imparting a funny taste or smell to the water. Plus, plastic kettles are more prone to warping over time, so we decided not to include them. Most models we've tested, however, contained some minor plastic elements, such as parts of the lid, a filter, or the water-level window. All of our picks’ manufacturers assured us that the plastic components in their kettles were made from heat-resistant plastics.

Our research has shown that even high-quality kettles can have a somewhat short lifespan. Spending more may get you nicer features or a sturdier housing, but it won’t ensure that your kettle lasts longer. So it’s best to find a model with a good warranty. Nice extras: Waiting is a pain, particularly when a kettle doesn’t have audible cues to let you know that it’s reached the desired temperature. That said, it’s preferable when a kettle is otherwise quiet—without rattling while heating, shrieking while boiling, or setting off prolonged beeps when you’ve let it sit. Other extra-credit additions include timers, real-time temperature indicators, and toggles that let you switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

We started our original testing by timing how long it took each kettle to bring a liter of water to a boil. With the variable-temperature kettles, we also measured how accurate their internal thermometer was for various non-boiling temperatures. (We did this by using a ThermoWorks Thermapen Mk4, our former upgrade pick for instant-read thermometer .)We performed both tests multiple times on each kettle.

Some models we tested had a warming feature that could hold set temperatures, so we checked their accuracy after letting them sit on hold for a period of time. We tested automatic shut-off features and took note of any excessive or annoying beeps while using each kettle. We tasted the water from each model after boiling to see whether it had any off flavors caused by plastic components.

We tested gooseneck kettles by making pour-over coffee, and by tracing specific patterns onto a dry paper towel to assess how much control each kettle’s spout and handle provided over the pour.

We also used an AI-powered tool to analyze over 5,000 Amazon user reviews across six popular electric kettle models. This included our top pick , the Cuisinart PerfecTemp CPK-17; our budget pick , the Hamilton Beach kettle; and our also-great pick , the Breville IQ, as well as other contenders like the Fellow Stagg , the OXO Brew gooseneck kettle , and the Chefman Electric Kettle with Temperature Control. (Our gooseneck pick, the Cuisinart GK-1 , is too new to have aggregated enough reviews for this type of analysis.)

Although review aggregation can’t cover every model we’re interested in, we did see some interesting patterns across the data collected. For instance, it’s clear users appreciate both speed and variable-temperature controls, since those were often the two most-mentioned topics in reviews. It’s also clear that longevity is an issue across all the kettles we analyzed. Unfortunately, we also saw patterns that more-sophisticated controls (like variable-temperature settings) may be at odds with longevity (meaning kettles with temperature controls generally got more complaints about failure than simple on/off kettles).

The Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp Cordless Electric Kettle has been our top pick since 2013, thanks to its ease of use, speed, and accuracy. It has an intuitive interface with six temperature settings, and it defaults to a keep-warm option that conveniently holds water at the designated temperature (or just below, if set to boil) for 30 minutes. The wide handle is comfortable to hold, and the spout doesn’t dribble when pouring. Unlike many of the other non-gooseneck kettles we tested, this model has a high capacity (1⅔ liters) yet still boasts a simple, streamlined design. So it won’t be an eyesore if it’s stored on your kitchen counter.

Of all of the variable-temperature models we tested, the Cuisinart CPK-17 is one of the simplest to operate. Each of the six temperature settings has its own button right on the handle, and each is labeled with the temperature and beverage it’s best for (such as Oolong and French press). If you don’t innately know the ideal water temperatures for making specific types of tea, this is very helpful (though the kettle’s settings for white and black tea vary a bit from the recommendations of our experts). All you need to do is add water, select the temperature you want, hit start, and wait for the kettle to beep when it’s done. Then it kicks into an automated keep-warm cycle (there’s also a Keep Warm button, if you’d like to select this option manually); this maintains the temperature for up to 30 minutes. Another button on the handle lets you easily open the lid with one hand, and the spout pours in an even stream.

In addition to the Cuisinart CPK-17’s straightforward, easy-to-use design, we found this kettle had an extremely consistent boil time. On average, it brought 1 liter of water to a boil in around 4 minutes. Of the kettles we tested, this wasn’t the fastest boil time, but it was speedier than most. Additionally, the Cuisinart CPK-17 proved to be impressively accurate in our tests: Water measured just 2 degrees over the set temperature of 185 °F after 30 minutes on the keep-warm setting.

The Cuisinart CPK-17 beeps once when you press a button on the control panel, as well as several times when it reaches a temperature setting. We found this much less annoying than the excessive beeps from the KitchenAid KEK1722 kettle. And we appreciated the temperature alert—which was surprisingly lacking in many of the models we tried—since it means you don’t need to hover over the kettle in eager anticipation. Be mindful, however, that a raucous beeping will occur if the kettle is on and you return it to the base empty. This is the boil-dry protection warning, intended to prevent damage to the kettle. It’s easy to avoid this situation, though, since the water-level window lets you see when water is getting low.

The Cuisinart CPK-17 is easy to clean, with a removable scale filter in the spout and a lid opening large enough for you to get a hand inside. Just avoid splashing water on the control buttons located on the handle, and be sure to clean them only with a damp cloth and a mild dish soap (if necessary). Harsher cleaners, like Lysol wipes, may cause the labels on the buttons to fade or disappear.

Another standout feature of the Cuisinart CPK-17 is its limited three-year warranty, which is substantially better than what you get with all of the other models we tested in this price range. (Most come with only a year of coverage.) Considering that constantly boiling water can be rough on a gadget, having triple the warranty coverage of the rest of the pack is impressive.

How the Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp has held up

We used the Cuisinart CPK-17 kettle in our high-traffic office kitchen for about a year before the office closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And in that time we had no complaints. The labels remained as good as new, and the lid always opened smoothly. Since we returned to the office in 2022, the Cuisinart CPK-17 has resumed regular use and continues to perform well, with no wear on the labels.

Alex Vaughn, a Wirecutter product manager, has used the Cuisinart CPK-17 at home for 6 years and counting: “We love it. It is used daily, often multiple times per day. Most often we use the boil option but the other temps do see some use. It’s an absolute workhorse. We have really hard water in our current home and the descaler works well with it too.”

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Cuisinart CPK-17 did have better accuracy than most of the other kettles we tested (some measured more than 10 degrees off their temperature settings). But we found the CPK-17 wasn’t as accurate at hitting lower temperatures, measuring 8 degrees over when we set it to 160 °F. On temperatures of 175 °F and up, however, it measured only 3 to 4 degrees off, which is pretty accurate. Since this model has a slew of other noteworthy features and has been consistently reliable over years of long-term testing, we’re willing to forgive its minor temperature variances at the lowest setting.

We have received feedback from some of our readers and have seen other reports of this Cuisinart model breaking down after about a year, or of the lid breaking off at the hinge, but those things should be covered by the warranty. In our analysis of online reviews, we also found that the percentage of complaints about the CPK-17 breaking was very similar to the percentage of complaints about the same issue in other kettles. It seems that across brands, a certain small percentage of kettles will just break within a year or two. Though anecdotally, the ones we’ve long-term tested have lasted years.

We’ve also seen a number of Amazon reviews complaining that the labels on the buttons wear off over time. We haven’t experienced this issue with the kettle we’ve been long-term testing, even with regular use, or with the ones we use in the staff kitchen in Wirecutter’s offices. But a couple Wirecutter staffers have encountered the problem with this model. A representative from Cuisinart suggested it may have to do with how people clean their kettles, and they advised us: “The only cleaning solution that should be used is a damp cloth and a mild dishwashing soap. Any other cleaners (Windex, Fantastik, Lysol) have harsh chemicals and may remove the paint/printing.” That said, some folks told us they experienced this issue with their kettle even if they hadn’t used any harsh cleaners (or, as some proclaim, had not cleaned their kettle handle at all). We’re unsure why there are inconsistent experiences with this issue, and based on our analysis of Amazon reviews, we don’t think it’s a widespread problem. But note that you might come across this.

The Breville IQ Kettle is a great-looking kettle that works just as well as the Cuisinart CPK-17 PerfecTemp , if not better in a few small ways. The catch? The IQ normally costs at least $30 more, and it comes with only a one-year warranty, compared with the Cuisinart’s three.

With a streamlined body, the Breville IQ is unobtrusive on the counter, and the design is more ergonomic and intuitive than that of other kettles. In our tests, it boiled water just a little faster than the Cuisinart and consistently hit the desired temperature. The IQ has five presets, as well as a temperature alert, a 20 minute keep-warm hold, and boil-dry protection. This kettle’s open handle makes it more accessible than closed-handle kettles, and in our tests we found pouring with it was comfortable.

Like the buttons on the Cuisinart CPK-17, each preset button on the Breville IQ is marked with both the temperature and the beverage it’s used for (French press or black tea, for example). But again, not all of the ranges are consistent with our experts’ recommendations. The buttons are on the base of the kettle rather than on the handle, and the text is printed above and below the buttons. (On the Cuisinart kettle, the text is on the buttons themselves, and some users report the labels rubbing off over time.) The Breville IQ also has a soft-open lid that releases steam more slowly and can be operated with one hand at the press of a button.

Overall, the Breville IQ has most of the features we liked from the Cuisinart CPK-17, plus a few others that are a little better, like the open handle and buttons on the base. This is a well-designed, well-functioning kettle. But we didn’t find those additional features to be worth the price hike, especially since review analysis suggests there’s no significant increase in longevity (and the IQ offers only a one-year warranty, versus the Cuisinart CPK-17’s three years). However, we do think the IQ could be a great option for someone who prefers the more streamlined look or who values the more ergonomic design and isn’t bothered by the extra cost.

How the Breville IQ has held up

The Cuisinart GK-1 Digital Gooseneck Kettle is ideal for coffee aficionados who value control and precision in their brewing routine. The kettle’s temperature control is adjustable by five-degree increments, and this kettle was the most accurate one we tested. Its slim and angled spout allows for the controlled, precision pouring necessary for making pour-over coffee. And the rounded handle makes the kettle comfortable to maneuver, resulting in a smoother pour. We also like the attractive matte black finish, which doesn’t pick up fingerprints the way reflective stainless steel does. (It does, however, pick up other scuffs and lint in a way that stainless steel does not. Which is to say: Pick based on what you like!) Target also exclusively carries a matte white version , though we haven’t tested to see how that finish holds up.

The Cuisinart Gooseneck’s controls are simple, with touchpad controls and real-time temperature display, allowing you to monitor the water as it heats. The temperature is adjustable in five-degree increments between 140 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Although the temperature adjustment is less precise than that of our previous pick, the OXO Brew Adjustable Temperature Pour-Over Kettle (which you can set to the degree), it’s still precise enough to brew a perfect cup of coffee or tea. And when you turn it off, the Cuisinart Gooseneck remembers the last temperature you set it to, so you don’t have to reset it every time you use it.

We appreciated that the Cuisinart Gooseneck’s screen displays the temperature of the water as it heats, as well as the final temperature (alternating between the two). This can be helpful if you’re using the kettle for both tea and coffee and you change settings frequently, or if you just like to double-check the temperature. The kettle beeps when the water’s ready and holds the temperature for 30 minutes before turning off. The Cuisinart Gooseneck also has boil-dry protection. If there’s no water left in the kettle, it will beep loudly and repetitively, and the buttons will blink before turning off. All of the alerts are particularly loud compared with those of other kettles, and they cannot be turned off—something to consider if you’re an early riser and you live with people who are sensitive to noise.

As far as the design is concerned, the Cuisinart Gooseneck is made of powder-coated stainless steel with a plastic-covered lid and handle. The matte black shows fewer smudges than unpainted alternatives, and the digital display goes dark while off (except for the power button), so it looks unobtrusive on the countertop. The handle is rounded and comfortable to hold, which facilitates a smoother, more controlled pour. As with most gooseneck kettles we’ve tested, with this model the lid doesn’t open at the push of a button—you have to pull it off manually, which can be tricky when the kettle is hot. Also like most gooseneck kettles we’ve tested, the Cuisinart Gooseneck lacks a water-level window.

Since it’s a relatively new model, there weren’t enough Amazon reviews for us to analyze. But we’ll continue to use this kettle and collect notes from other users. Given the patterns we’ve seen in reviews of other kettles, there’s a small chance that this model, like any other electric kettle, could fail within a couple years. But like our top pick , this kettle does come with Cuisinart’s three-year warranty, which covers typical household use.

How the Cuisinart GK-1 Digital Gooseneck has held up

We recommend the Hamilton Beach 40880 Stainless Steel 1.7 Liter Kettle for anyone who wants an affordable basic model that quickly brings water to a boil. This kettle lacks the bells and whistles of our other picks—it doesn’t have preset temperature controls or a keep-warm setting—but it does have all the other features we look for in a decent kettle. Most importantly, perhaps, its handle is easy to hold, and the spout doesn’t drip when pouring.

We were impressed with this kettle’s speed, which was on a par with that of the Cuisinart CPK-17 in boiling time (it took about 4 minutes to heat a liter of water). This Hamilton Beach model is simple to operate: You flick the tab on the base of the handle up, and the kettle begins heating the water. A red light on the base illuminates once the boiling cycle begins, so you always know that it’s on. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, the kettle automatically shuts off, so you don’t have to worry about turning it off manually. That said, since the Hamilton Beach 40880 doesn’t have an audible alert, it’s possible the water will start to cool before you’ve even realized it boiled, especially if you’re not in the room when it does so.

When we analyzed the Amazon reviews, we saw a lower percentage of complaints about this kettle failing than we did for any of the other variable-temp kettles we looked at (which might just mean there’s less that can break due to the kettle’s simpler electronics).

In our tests, the spout on the Hamilton Beach 40880 didn’t dribble water when pouring, and the wide handle was comfortable to hold. Unlike some models that require you to open the lid manually, the 40880 conveniently opens with a push of a button located at the top of the handle. This is a valuable safety feature when you’re attempting to empty a kettle that’s still hot. This model also boasts two water-level windows, allowing you to see how full the kettle is, regardless of which way you place it on the base.

The plastic hinges on the Hamilton Beach 40880’s lid are one of its biggest drawbacks. Other models, including our top pick, the Cuisinart CPK-17, have metal hinges that seem more durable. The Hamilton Beach 40880 is covered by a one-year warranty.

To minimize the amount of mineral-deposit buildup in your kettle, always empty it after you use it. You’ll still need to decalcify your kettle from time to time, though the frequency depends on the hardness of your water. Check the manual for the manufacturer’s specific instructions on descaling. Otherwise, we’ve found it’s effective to fill the kettle with 1 cup of white vinegar and 3 cups of water, heat it to a boil, turn it off, and allow it to stand overnight. Alternatively, using half a teaspoon of cream of tartar with half a kettle of water should work. No matter what method you choose, after you empty the kettle, refill it with water only, bring it to a boil, and drain; repeat with water twice more.

Some kettles come with a mesh filter for trapping calcium deposits, and you’ll need to clean the filter periodically—more often if you have hard water. Follow the instructions in the manual for removing the filter, and clean it with a cloth or brush under hot water. For hard-to-remove calcium deposits, let the filter sit overnight in a solution of one part water to three parts white vinegar; rinse thoroughly before returning it to the kettle.

Unfortunately, the longevity of electric kettles can be unreliable across the board. We sent kettles to the Ohio State University metallurgy department, and researchers took them apart to study their components. Based on their initial observations, as well as information from an OXO representative, we suspect that nearly all of the kettles we’ve tested use the same circuitry and temperature controls—most likely produced by a company called Strix . Pricier kettles don’t necessarily have more-durable electronics—you’re paying for looks, construction, and fancier features.

In our analysis of electric kettle product reviews, most variable-temperature kettles showed similar percentages of reviews complaining about the kettle breaking prematurely—within one to two years. However, the percentages of complaints about premature breaking for the simple boiling models tended to be noticeably lower—and this was true for brands on the lower (Hamilton Beach) and higher (Breville) ends of the price spectrum. This leads us to believe that non-variable-temperature kettles truly break down less than their fancier variable-temperature counterparts. Perhaps fewer things can go wrong when all you have is an on/off switch. So if you’re really concerned about not having to get rid of your kettle prematurely, you might opt for a kettle that simply boils. Going even further, you could also consider a stovetop kettle.

If you’re looking for a more modern, minimalist kettle: The Zwilling Enfinigy Cool Touch Kettle Pro is sleek and performs well overall. It’s perfect for someone who values a cleaner look but doesn’t want to compromise on function. It boiled quickly and was pretty accurate in our tests. It also boasts a Cool Touch design, which means you can touch both the body and the handle of the kettle safely and use both hands to pour. But its controls are touchscreen buttons that are visible only when on and illuminated, with the set temperature lit only slightly brighter. We found this difference in lighting difficult to see, so it wasn’t always clear just what temperature setting we were on. It’s also more expensive than most of our other picks (apart from the Breville , at writing time). If you’re not concerned about the visibility issues, though, it’s an attractive kettle that heats and maintains temperature just as well as our other picks.

If our gooseneck pick is out of stock, or you want a stainless steel finish instead: The OXO Brew Adjustable Temperature Pour-Over Kettle , our former gooseneck pick, has a flatter handle and a squatter body than our pick, the Cuisinart GK-1 gooseneck. Both of those factors made it just a little harder for us to pour precisely with the OXO kettle in comparison with the Cuisinart model. However, the OXO kettle comes in a stainless steel finish (if you’re not a fan of matte black or white), and it’s still a fast, precise kettle. It also offers a bit more precision, allowing temperature adjustments in 1-degree increments from 140 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit (or 40 to 100 degrees Celsius), whereas the Cuisinart model allows changes in 5-degree increments.

If you like a modern aesthetic, and you don’t mind paying more for smaller capacity: The Fellow Corvo EKG Electric Kettle is attractive, and it performed very well, but it’s incredibly small. Due to its 0.9-liter capacity, you’re hardly getting two full cups of tea. The variable-temperature control was very accurate, the settings were intuitive, and the base was nice. We didn’t make it a pick because we don’t find it to be a very practical option, especially for the price. That being said, if you’re regularly making single servings, and you’re drawn to the Corvo’s good looks, you likely won’t be disappointed in its performance.

If you like the Corvo, but you want a gooseneck spout: As is true of the Corvo, the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Gooseneck Kettle performs well, but we found its small size and high price impractical for most users. If you frequently make single-serving pour-over, and you find the Stagg’s silhouette worth the price, you will likely be happy with this kettle. But we think the Cuisinart GK-1 Gooseneck functions just as well, and it’s pretty close looks-wise, for much less. (Fun side note: Both Fellow kettles boast an Easter egg in the shape of a Wormy game, which pops up when you remove the kettle from the base and switch the Fahrenheit/Celsius toggle back and forth.)

If you’d like a budget kettle with adjustable temperatures: The Chefman Glass Electric Kettle has one of the lowest prices we’ve seen on a variable-temperature electric kettle. It’s not as accurate as our other variable-temperature picks, but it gets temperatures close enough that you should still be able to make a good cup of tea or coffee. However, its body is made of glass, whereas our budget pick , the Hamilton Beach kettle , is made of sturdier metal. And, based on an analysis of Amazon reviews, owners of this kettle are more likely to report failure than are Hamilton Beach owners. The Chefman kettle also glows in different colors, based on the temperature setting, which could be a pro or a con depending on your taste (we didn’t care for it).

Variable-temperature kettles

Although the OXO Brew Adjustable Temperature Electric Kettle was very accurate in our tests, it had trouble staying closed; as water came to a boil, the lid frequently popped open.

The Tribest Glass Raw Tea Kettle GKD-450-B lacks a button on the handle to open the lid. Its blue light constantly turns on and off until it reaches the desired temperature, something we found annoying.

The KitchenAid KEK1722 Electric Kettle was a runner-up pick previously, but after long-term testing, we were beyond irritated by its excessive beeping. Also, the kettle always defaults to Celsius; for Fahrenheit temperatures, you have to change the settings every time you use it.

Some other models we encountered, such as the Breville BTM800XL One-Touch Tea Maker , were exorbitantly priced. More than $200 is too much to spend on a kettle, especially if it has only a one-year warranty. Even the KitchenAid KEK1522 Pro Line Series Electric Kettle doesn’t have any more to offer than the Cuisinart CPK-17 kettle , which usually costs about half the price.

We were curious about the $260 Aarke Kettle’s all-stainless steel construction and promise of durability, but overall it's not worth its hefty price. The Aarke lacks a stay warm setting and measurement markings, and, at 1.2 liters, has a smaller capacity than our picks. It also got hotter on the lid and spouted more steam than other kettles we’ve tested. We found the faint LED indicator light difficult to read and the alleged beeping imperceptible. And its 2-year warranty is shorter than the Cuisinart ’s 3-year warranty. Otherwise, it performs as well our picks—boiling one liter of water quickly and pouring cleanly.

Gooseneck kettles

The Bonavita BV382510V 1.0L Digital Variable Temperature Gooseneck , our former budget pick (which is no longer particularly budget), is a small, 1-liter gooseneck kettle that’s lightweight and easy to hold. You can set the Bonavita to any temperature between 140 and 212 °F and it can hold a set temperature for up to an hour—longer than any of our picks. However, the Bonavita takes longer to come to a boil than our picks, and it lacks audible cues to let you know when your water is ready. We removed this kettle as a pick after noticing too many complaints about rust and other durability issues.

The KitchenAid Precision Gooseneck Electric Kettle proved less than intuitive to use. Yes, you can adjust the flow rate on the spout for better pour-over control. But it requires lots of fumbling inside the lip of the machine, so you better make sure you’re operating with a cold, empty kettle. And even though you can set the temperature in 1-degree increments, a thermometer built into the lid is a lot harder to read than an LCD screen attached to the base.

We appreciated the reasonable price, intuitive controls, and clearly labeled temperature settings of the Willow & Everett Electric Gooseneck Kettle . Still, it was somewhat heavy and unwieldy, and the top was tough to remove, which could present a safety issue if still hot. Finally, this kettle’s boiling speed wasn’t great—5 minutes 40 seconds for a liter of water.

Boil-only kettles

The Mueller Premium 1500W Electric Kettle with SpeedBoil Tech had a fairly average boil time (not too different from that of our top pick, the Cuisinart CPK-17). But the base felt flimsy, and there were more plastic elements than we’d prefer. If you get this kettle, it’s fine but nothing special, and ultimately it just boils water. For a little more, you can get the Chefman with variable-temperature control .

The Cosori Electric Kettle with Upgraded Stainless Steel Filter and Inner Lid was almost identical to the Mueller. It had a similar boil time range, a simple on/off switch, and a very similar design. Right out of the box, it had a small discoloration on the top, and throughout testing the lid was finicky to open.

The AmazonBasics Stainless Steel Electric Kettle is one of the most inexpensive options we looked at. To boil a liter of water, it took this kettle the same amount of time as the Hamilton Beach 40880 . But the design is clunky, and we found it less comfortable to hold and to pour from.

The Chef’sChoice Cordless Electric Kettle 681 , a previous budget pick, had one of the fastest boiling times of all the models we tested, but Amazon ratings for this model have dipped considerably due to leaks or auto-off function failures.

The Secura 1.8 Quart Stainless Steel Cordless Electric Kettle did very well in our tests, and it is currently around the same price as our budget pick , but the Secura lacks a water-level window. According to a Secura representative, the small hole on the interior allows steam to reach the bottom interior of the unit, where the temperature control is located. We found, however, that cleaning in between the walls of the kettle would be impossible, so we dismissed this model.

The KitchenAid 1.25-Liter Electric Kettle is cute to look at, with a very retro style à la SMEG, but it doesn’t do enough to justify the price. It has an on/off switch only, with no variable-temperature control. The kettle itself has a sturdy build, very similar to any stovetop kettle, but the base felt flimsy. It doesn’t compete with other kettles in this price range.

The OXO Brew Cordless Glass Electric Kettle costs a lot for a basic kettle that lacks variable-temperature controls and whose glass body is less durable than stainless steel options.

And as full-time travel bloggers and photographers, we find ourselves on the road a lot. So finding the best travel coffee maker was something we were keen to do!

Whether you are trying to escape the instant coffee in hotel rooms or the bad diner coffee, trying to fuel your espresso addition in the wilderness, or trying to save money on buying expensive coffee at places like Starbucks, we think that making your own coffee with a portable coffee maker may be the way to go.

You can make your own coffee to your own liking for much less than you’d spend if you bought it from a coffee shop. Making your own coffee can also be a more environmentally friendly option as well.

As you are likely already aware, there are a variety of ways that you can brew coffee. These include French Press style coffee, drip coffee (also known as filter coffee), Turkish style coffee, pour over coffee, and espresso coffee. The latter can be used to make a range of other coffee drinks like Americanos, cappuccinos, and lattes, with the addition of ingredients like hot water or steamed milk.

You probably already have a style of coffee you enjoy, which will come with an associated brewing method. It’s important to pick a travel coffee maker that can make your preferred style of coffee, especially as no one travel coffee maker has the ability to make every type of coffee.

Espresso in particular is more challenging to make on the go, as it requires hot water to be pushed through very fine coffee beans at between 7 and 10 bars of pressure. These types of systems tend to be heavier and more expensive.

We’re big fans of the Coffee Gator motto “Bring the coffee house home”. They created the Coffee Gator Thermal Travel Cup with the aim of being able to make and drink incredible, barista-quality coffee at home or on the go.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

If portability is a critical factor in your decision making, then you should definitely consider the JoGo CoffeeStraw.

This innovative little device is basically a cross between a metal straw and a French Press. At one end of the stainless steel straw you’ll find a BPA free heat regulated silicone tip for drinking through. At the other end is a fine micron-mesh filter made from stainless steel.

Using the straw couldn’t be simpler. Just add ground coffee to any cup, pour in hot water, then wait a couple of minutes for it to steep (and the water to cool down!). Once brewed, you just drink through the straw. As you drink the coffee passes through the filter, giving you a coffee that is similar in style to a French Press.

Obviously, there is no pressure involved in the extraction, so the coffee produced isn’t espresso style. However, we find it to produce very tasty and smooth coffee, and it is incredibly easy to use. It’s also very small and lightweight.

In terms of cleaning, the filter unscrews for easy rinsing. The straw also comes with a bottle cleaner style brush so you can clean the inside, and it is also dishwasher safe.

The other good thing about this straw is that its use is not just restricted to coffee. You can also use it for loose leaf tea, fresh juice with seeds, or any other drink where you want to use a more environmentally friendly straw. It can also be used to drink cold brew coffee.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. You need to supply your own hot water and mug, and there’s no way to control the brew strength other than by adjusting the initial amount of coffee. As the coffee grounds (or tea leaves) stay in the mug, it will continue to brew as you drink.

We haven’t found this to be a problem, but if you are someone who likes to savour a cup over a prolonged time this is something to consider. The best option is to try and drink it consistently rather than slowly as otherwise the drink may become bitter or over brewed.

From an environmental perspective it saves on plastic straws as well as paper filters and single use coffee pods. It’s a unique product, and definitely one to consider for ultra-portable coffee making on the go!

GROSCHE Milano Moka Pot

When I travelled across Australia for a year, primarily camping out of my four-wheel drive vehicle in remote locations, my coffee maker of choice was a Moka Pot.

This is one of the most popular ways to make coffee at home in Italy. Basically, it’s a metal pot with two parts. – the hot water goes in the bottom container below the ground coffee, and you place it directly on a heat source like a stove top or gas burner. The water boils and is pushed through the coffee grounds and up into the upper pot.

Moka pots make espresso style coffee quickly and easily. Stanley are well known for their all-steel vacuum flask which they have been making since 1913. However, they also make a number of other camp and travel focused products, including some portable coffee makers.

We’re recommending the Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set, which comes, as the name suggests, as a set with a cup and a stainless steel pour over filter.

You can also buy just the pour over part of the set if you already have a mug or cup you want to use.

The pour over filter and mug are both made from 18/8 stainless steel and is BPA free. It’s also dishwasher safe. The mug itself has a drink-through lid as well as double-wall vacuum insulation which can keep your drink hot for up to 1.5hours.

If you are looking for something quick and simple that brews smooth ground-free coffee every time, this AeroPress might be a fantastic option for you. AeroPress basically created a new type of portable coffee extraction method, known as the AeroPress brewing system.

The AeroPress brewing system results in uniform extraction for a full coffee flavor. It includes a micro filter for grit free coffee and guarantees a 20 second ‘press time’ – just add your coffee and water. The end result is up to an 8oz coffee drink which is similar to but not quite as strong as espresso, to which you can add water to create a 10 oz sized Americano if you wish.

The AeroPress kit comes with 350 disposable filters, a scoop, funnel and stirrer. However, we recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You might also consider the flow control filter cap for more brewing control.

An added bonus is that there are no fiddly parts that are hard to get to when washing, so the cleanup is relatively simple. That said, in our experience no coffee system is ever that easy to clean as coffee grinds have a habit of getting everywhere!

AeroPress Go

AeroPress also make the AeroPress Go . This has the same brewing system as the original, but it includes a 15oz (444ml) cup which fits all the accessories when not in use, and is slightly more compact. We have one of these and love it for the coffee it produces as well as for how portable it is.

It also comes with 350 disposable filters, but we’d recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You also get a coffee scoop.

It is obviously slightly heavier overall than the original AeroPress because of the mug, and it can only brew 8oz instead of 10oz as it’s slightly smaller. Otherwise you’re going to get the same great coffee.

CONQUECO Portable Espresso Machine

The Conqueco Portable Espresso machine is a one-stop-shop for coffee on the go, with support for Nespresso pods and L’OR capsules. It’s also one of the few options on the market that has a built in battery which allows you to heat your water on the go – although this can take a while, so using pre-heated water is quicker.

Operated by a rechargeable lithium battery, this machine can heat water up to 194F/90C and the coffee it produces is at 158F/70C. You will need to use the supplied car or wall adapter to charge the battery pack prior to use.

If you use the built-in battery to heat the water from room temperature, it will be able to make three cups of espresso. If you use preheated water, it can make 200 cups!

When we travel, I use a small, cheap Black& Decker 5 cup drip coffee machine. I have found it even easier than a French press + cleaner is better.

Hi Kathleen – I haven’t tried it and so don’t have personal experience. It has largely positive reviews and running the brand through Fakespot the reviews also appear genuine. So if you are after a French press style mug coffee maker it certainly looks like a good option. If you do purchase it I’d be happy to hear your opinion!

Thanks very much! According to the manufacturer it should work on an induction stove. There are some reviews suggesting it doesn’t, but the manufacturer says that that was an older model, and the new version which is on sale now is induction compatible. I have a number of CoffeeGator products, and they have always been very quick to respond to any questions when I’ve messaged them, so I would say that if for some reason it doesn’t work for you, I am sure they would help out 🙂

For some, whether or not to buy a portable coffee maker isn’t an issue because the answer is a resounding “Yes.” But for others, buying a portable coffee maker for travel may seem silly. Why would you want to pack a coffee maker when there are countless places to get coffee?

You may want to buy a portable coffee maker for three good reasons. You don’t need to be a coffee lover to appreciate these reasons. Do any of the reasons appeal to you?

Get coffee when you want it

If you’re anything like me, you want coffee within fifteen minutes of opening your sticky eyelids and rubbing away the last remnants of sleep. The last thing you want is to shower, get dressed, and walk across the street to the coffee shop for your first brew of the day.

If you travel with a portable coffee maker, you can make coffee whenever you want. There is no need to wait in line at the coffee shop or get dressed before you can enjoy that first cup.

Make coffee the way you want it

If you drink coffee regularly, you probably have a particular way you like it. A specific water temperature, a certain volume, and a selection of additives like sugar and cream. But when you travel, you relinquish control over your coffee and rely on the source – a gas station, fast food restaurant, or coffee shop.

If you travel with a portable coffee maker, you can make your coffee just as you like. You can use the same beans or pods, brew the coffee at the same temperature and volume, and add the same ingredients after brewing. And if you travel with a portable fridge , you can keep your coffee creamer chilled between stops on your road trips.

Spend less on coffee and more money on travel

Good coffee isn’t cheap and cheap coffee isn’t good. And while it’s fun to explore local coffee shops while traveling, they can quickly become a drain on your travel budget. Even those one-dollar coffees at the gas station will add up over a week. If you travel with a portable coffee maker, you can save the money you would have spent and put it towards a museum admission or kayak rental.

There are lots of ways of brewing coffee and lots of ways to finish it after brewing. If you drink coffee at home, you likely already know your preferred method of brewing coffee. But when you travel, you might want to try something different, like espresso drinks for an extra caffeine boost or a pour over coffee for something quick and easy.

Here are the different types of portable coffee makers that you could easily pack for your next trip.

Espresso beans are regular coffee beans roasted longer and ground finer for brewing. The result is a richer flavor profile enjoyable in shots, double shots, or espresso drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos. At home, popular espresso machines like the Breville Barista Pro injects hot, pressurized water through a porta filter filled with finely ground beans.

While there are several portable espresso makers, they all require one key ingredient that is tricky while traveling: hot water. This requires a separate accessory for heating water before you can brew an espresso coffee, adding time and labor to the process.

Portable espresso makers are the easiest to travel with but have the heftiest price tag.

Pour over is the easiest method for brewing coffee at home or on the road. A paper filter on top of a container is filled with ground coffee, and then hot water is methodically poured over the grounds. The Chemex Pour-Over Glass Coffeemaker is a popular model for pour over drinkers at home.

While traveling, the pour over is a quick and easy method for brewing coffee. But, like espresso drinks, it requires hot water. Portable pour over coffee makers are the least expensive of all the options and the easiest to pack.

French Press

The French Press method of coffee making is popular among backpackers and campers because of how easy it is. First, water is heated in a vessel to the desired temperature. Then, ground coffee is gently poured on top and allowed to soak for a specific time. Finally, a fine mesh filter is pressed down, pushing the coffee grounds to the bottom of the vessel so the coffee can be poured into a mug.

Like the two previous options, the French Press requires hot water. And this method tends to be the messiest, with the wet coffee grounds pressed into the bottom of the vessel that must be cleaned between each use. Portable French Press coffee makers are somewhere in the middle for price and portability, but from start to finish takes the longest amount of time to brew coffee.

Single Serve

Drip coffee is the most common way of making coffee in the world. From large 12-cup glass coffee pots to stainless steel carafes and single-serve options, there are more options for drip coffee machines than any other method of brewing coffee. Ground coffee is placed in a filter basket or a pod inserted, and the machine does the rest, heating water and slowly trickling through the grounds and into the coffee mug.

Single serve coffee makers are the most convenient for travel, especially the models that can use pods. The machines require power, but so does the kettle to make hot water for all the previous options. But the machines require minimal cleaning and manual labor, producing coffee faster and easier.

Portable single-serve coffee makers compete with espresso makers for price. The makers are also larger and near impossible to pack in checked luggage if flying. However, the makers are the best option for road trippers and use in hotel rooms.

Before confirming your purchase of a portable coffee maker, there are some things to consider when making your decision. This decision might be easy if you’re set on a particular coffee-making method. But if you’re open to new possibilities, there are options for your needs.

If you’re flying, space in your luggage is a premium. But even if you’re road tripping, space in your car is limited. Giant coffee makers permanently parked on your kitchen countertop are not ideal for travel, so look for smaller coffee makers that are easier to pack and carry.

Like the size, if you’re flying, weight is a premium. Small usually means light, but not always. Look for a lightweight, portable coffee maker that will be easier to carry in your luggage.

Compactness

Some portable coffee makers come in all-in-one packages that make it easy to keep up with the various components. These are the best coffee makers, especially if you’re checking in and out of multiple hotels on a road trip.

This is the least important concern for travel unless you’re camping in an Alaskan yurt. You’ll likely have power wherever you travel, but finding an available outlet can sometimes be difficult. And, if your portable coffee maker requires power, you won’t be using it in your vehicle without a good power inverter .

Most portable coffee makers are built on the principle of brewing single-serve coffee. Anything more required a large and hefty carafe. Be sure you’re happy with one serving at a time, especially if you need two or more coffees immediately in the morning.

Portable coffee makers are slower than their counterparts sitting at your house. Instead of always having hot water ready, a portable coffee maker must heat the water and brew the coffee with each serving. And that can become a problem if you need coffee for two or more people every morning. Some portable coffee makers are faster than others, which might be the deciding factor.

A lot of portable coffee makers must be cleaned between each use. This means it will take longer and more effort to make each coffee. You might want to consider a single-serve coffee maker that will be faster and easier to use.

Accessories

A world of accessories exists for every portable coffee maker, but some require additional items. Depending on your purchase, you may need a coffee grinder, hot water kettle, and travel case. The total investment increases along with the size and weight of your luggage.

The availability of hot water is probably the most important factor in the type of portable coffee maker you choose. Unless you enjoy cold coffee, you will need hot water to make your coffee. Single serve coffee machines have built-in heating elements, but many other types will require a hot water kettle. That means buying and packing an additional device in your luggage.

One of the benefits of a portable coffee maker is saving money on what you otherwise might have spent at Starbucks. Consider how many coffees you would need to brew to see a return on your investment before plunging into the world of portable coffee makers.

If you're a daily coffee drinker with a standard ceramic mug, you're probably used to your drink being lukewarm by the time it's half-full and full-on cold for the last few sips. What impressed us most about the Nextmug is its precise and consistent temperature controls. From the full mug to the last drops, our coffee stayed equally hot.

We also like the ease of using this warmer, which has its controls and heater self-contained within the mug. You turn it on and select a temperature using a single button on the front, and the onboard battery regulates the temperature without any coasters or plugs required. The available settings of warm, hot, and piping equate to 130, 140, and 150 degrees Fahrenheit; we found the lowest setting perfect and the highest too hot to drink, but this range covers most people's preferences without being hot enough to cause burns.

No matter the temperature setting, the Nextmug's battery lasted only about an hour in testing; we wish it had lasted longer. But the mug will continue to heat while it recharges on its compact plug-in coaster base. It includes a spill-resistant lid that makes it more portable, though you can't really bring it in the car as its handle won't fit in a round cup holder. The precision and accuracy make this the best-performing warmer in our tests, and the price tag reflects that—however, the Nextmug is often on sale for a nice discount.

This inexpensive model is essentially a tiny, low-powered portable electric burner incorporated into a coaster. You place a mug onto the glass base, and it heats up to one of three set temperatures. Don't worry, there are safety features incorporated: The warmer won't turn on unless it senses the weight of a mug, and there's an automatic shut-off feature in case you forget about your coffee. It also doesn't get anywhere near as hot as a stove.

The Kin Element works by heating your mug (and its contents) only from beneath, which makes the temperature less even than mugs that heat from the bottom and sides at the same time. We did find this to be a problem in testing—a full mug might start to get cool on top and hot on the bottom, while a nearly empty cup heats its contents to a noticeably higher temperature than a full one. However, it comes with a solution to this problem, in the form of a dishwasher-safe silicone lid that sits on top of your mug to trap heat. We didn't expect the lid to do much, but it regulated the temperature better than an uncovered mug.

The three temperature settings for the Kin Element are a bit lower than the Nextmug, ranging from 110 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but we think that's plenty hot for most beverages. The base is 4.5 inches wide, enough for all but the largest novelty mugs, and it has a perfectly flat surface to accommodate even larger vessels. However, that means there's no lip to hold your mug in place and it can be easy to knock over.

A somewhat serious issue we encountered with this model came when we used it with glass: A candle cracked sitting on the base. Kin says you can use the Element as a candle warmer, and the product listing also shows it used with glass mugs, but we'd stick to ceramic to be safe. (We had no problems in testing with any ceramic mugs.)

Ember calls itself the "world's first temperature control mug," and its Mug 2 is the latest in self-warming drink-holding technology. The wireless device's battery lasts up to 90 minutes per charge, and its slim charging base is barely wider than the mug itself.

Where it really stands out is its futuristic smart functions. This mug is controlled by an app that lets you set its temperature to an individual degree, anywhere from 120 to 145. The app has a steeping timer with recommended temperatures for different types of tea , specialized presets for different beverages, and the ability to program your own beverage routine exactly how you like it. It can even connect to your phone's health app to track how much caffeine you're consuming. And we found the Ember app blissfully intuitive to connect and use, with none of the bugs and glitches we often run into with "smart" kitchen appliances. The temperature control was precise, keeping coffee at the same temperature whether the mug was full or next to empty.

On the other hand, you can't really use the Mug 2 without the app. You can turn the device on manually and it will heat to the last temperature it was set to, but you don't have any control over it otherwise. We also found it undersized, with a mere 10-ounce capacity for the standard model. (There's a 14-ounce version available that's significantly more expensive.) We love the matte finish on the Mug 2 as well as the fact that it comes in black, white, or a few other colors, but it is rather delicate. You have to wash the mug by hand and can't use metal implements—we scratched a test model pretty badly with just one metal spoon stirring session.

This mug looks...like a normal coffee mug, and that's a big part of why we like it. The OHOM Ui mug has a ceramic exterior, with a thin layer of metallic material in the bottom that heats up via induction when you place it on its base. The mug comes in lots of colors (check different retailers for different options), and it's even safe to put in both the dishwasher and the microwave, something few other warming mugs can claim. On top of that, the charging pad uses the Qi wireless standard and can charge many cell phones, tablets, earbuds, and other small electronics when you're not using it to heat your coffee.

In testing, we found the Ui a bit underpowered. It kept our coffee just warm when covered with the included heat-retention lid and barely lukewarm without it. There are no temperature controls or settings with this mug; it turns on when you place it on the base and turns off after an hour or when you take it off the base. The brand says its maximum temperature is just 130 degrees Fahrenheit—not all that hot—so this is probably a mug for coffee drinkers who don't like their java scalding.

Most mug warmers aren't equipped to deal with a very large mug, which is a problem if you like to chug hot coffee all morning. Cosori's set includes the biggest mug on this list, a 17-ouncer that even the most serious caffeine addicts won't have to refill quite as often. It's made of stainless steel, which conducts heat well and comes to temperature quickly, but it also has a heatproof handle and rubber sleeve around the middle that protects your fingers and serves as insulation. (That said, the bare metal parts of the mug get hot enough to singe, so be careful.)

The Cosori warmer plate has the widest temperature range and highest power of all the models we tested, with single-degree precision between 77 and 230 degrees Fahrenheit. The brand says not to set beverages above 158, but the warmer can double as a hot plate—it's not hot enough for much real cooking, but you could use it to reheat lunch at your desk or boil water for tea. We didn't measure its abilities as a hot plate in this set of testing, but as a warmer, it was able to maintain a full mug of coffee at 140 degrees for four hours with no trouble.

Because it doesn't have a self-heating mug, this model is cheaper. The downside is that the mug has to stay on the base at all times. It also heats only from the bottom, which can lead to uneven temperatures, so we recommend keeping the included heat-retaining lid on top of the mug. (Unfortunately, the lid just sits on top and doesn't seal, so it doesn't make it portable.) You can, in theory, use the Cosori base with any heat-safe mug, but the instructions say it won't heat as effectively with a ceramic or thicker metal mug.

If you drink a lot of coffee at work, this device is ideal to plug in at your desk. It's unobtrusive but stable, works simply and easily, and is cheap enough that it won't be the end of the world if a thieving co-worker makes off with yours.

But this model also adds a bunch of other useful features. It incorporates Apple's FindMy technology, which means you can use your iPhone to track a lost mug down. It will automatically turn off after two hours or when it senses it's empty, but then it turns back on when it feels movement or liquid. You can even set the LED temperature and control display to scroll a name or other message, which is helpful if there are several Travel Mug 2s in the office or family—and it's just fun.

The big downside here, of course, is cost. The Travel Mug 2 is the most expensive model we tested; you pay for all those features and functions. It's also quite small for its size—it's as tall as a 16-ounce container but can only hold 12 ounces since its electronics and heating element take up a lot of room. One other minor quibble we found is that the push-to-open lid makes such a good seal that it can build up pressure while it heats up and spatter when you open it. If you're heating coffee from cold in this mug, open the lid briefly every few minutes to relieve the pressure and avoid any mess.

With the Vsitoo Smart Mug, users can set the temperature of their coffee or tea between 86 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperature adjustments can be made manually from a button on the bottom of the mug or via the Vsitoo app. We found the app intuitive–all you have to do is slide the temperature dial with your finger–but the setup to be longer than necessary.

Most importantly, though, is that unlike many self-heating mugs, this one comes with a removable lid. It prevents major spills and adds peace of mind if you drink coffee near a computer or fabrics that are easy to stain. The lid has a simple sliding tab to open and close.

The mug works for roughly two hours when it's not on the charging coaster, which is generally enough time to finish a cup of coffee. With its even, consistent heating from full cup to the last drops, the Nextmug earned our top recommendation. For a more affordable but still dependable way to keep your coffee hot, you can't go wrong with the Kin Element Mug Warmer .

Based on the results of previous rounds of testing, along with hours researching top products and key features, we chose 17 different mug warmer models to purchase and test. We incorporated the warmers into our daily hot-beverage routines over the course of about a month.

We Observed

• Heating consistency: As we used the warmers on a day-to-day basis, we measured the temperature of the liquid in the mug to see if it matched the set temperature, using mugs of different types and at different levels of fullness. At least once during the testing period, we left a mug of coffee on each warmer for a full hour to see if it would stay at the same temperature the whole time. (We also tasted the coffee before and after to see if it lost any flavor or acquired a burnt taste.)
• Design: We looked at a lot of different aspects of design, including the size and shape of the warmer and what types of mugs it can accommodate; the power cord and whether its length and orientation interfered with use; and safety features like automatic shutoff, a lip to keep the mug in place, or a weight sensor.
• Battery life: For wireless mug warmers, we measured how long each model could keep coffee hot before it needed to recharge. We also took note of any features that made the charging plate more or less convenient to use.
• Ease of use: Besides how simple each warmer was to actually plug in and turn on, we also considered factors like whether it could accommodate mugs of different sizes and materials, and whether the base had stability on a table or desk even with a heavy mug on top.
• Settings and accessories: Most mug warmers we tested offer more than one temperature option, and some can even be set down to an individual degree. We measured the temperature at a variety of settings to check accuracy and noted if we had any trouble figuring out how to choose a temperature. Many self-contained and wireless mug warmers include a mug; we evaluated these on capacity, heating ability, and looks. For models with other settings and accessories, we tested these out to determine whether they work as promised, and if they're useful.
• Value: After completing all our other tests and evaluations, we revealed the retail prices for each mug warmer to consider their relative value. We compared each model's cost to the overall average while keeping in mind that wireless warmers tend to cost quite a bit more than corded ones.
• Ember Smart Cup : We love Ember. We tested three models for this story, and both of the other two made our list of favorites. The Smart Cup has the same easy-to-use app and excellent performance as the other Ember models, but it's just really small. The capacity is only 6 ounces and for only a little more money you can get a much bigger vessel.
• VOBAGA Coffee Mug Warmer : This hot plate–style warmer did a pretty good job of keeping a full mug hot for four hours, as long as we kept it on the highest temperature setting. It's not a bad machine albeit on the more expensive side for one that's tethered to the wall with a plug—and this plug and heating plate are laid out in an awkward way that takes up a lot of space and is a hassle to move around.
• GARMEE Electric Coffee Warmer : Another model with a warming plate that can work with any kind of mug, the GARMEE did fine in tests and is priced moderately for what it does. It didn't stand out in any way, except that the plate got hot enough that we'd worry about burning fingers.

What to Look for in a Coffee Mug Warmer

Heating method.

There are essentially two ways a mug warmer can be set up: as a miniature "hot plate" that heats up to warm the mug indirectly or as a self-contained system with a heating element within the mug itself.

Hot plate–style warmers tend to cost less, but they don't warm as evenly or hold temperatures as accurately because they only heat the mug from one side. Many of these models include a heat-retaining lid you place atop your mug while it heats, which seems like such a minor thing but made a big difference in our tests. One other advantage of these is that many models will work with any mug rather than just the one that's included.

Self-contained mug warmers are higher-priced but heat more evenly and precisely because the entire inner surface of the mug warms up the liquid inside. These mugs might have an internal battery that can work on its own for a few hours between charges, while others will only heat up when attached to the base. Self-contained mugs generally require careful hand-washing, as submerging in water or the high temperatures of the dishwasher can damage their electronics.

Besides just warming the contents of a mug, many models extend their functionality with multiple temperature settings that can be as precise as down to the individual degree. Most warmers also have safety features that shut off the heat after a set amount of time, when there's nothing on the heating plate, or when the mug is empty. Smart mug warmers that use a phone app might have customizable programs, set temperatures for different beverages, and recipe suggestions in addition to basic controls, too. Some of the hot plate–style warmers can also heat up to much higher temperatures than mug-only machines, with the ability to boil water or even reheat food.

A "cup of coffee" can mean a lot of different amounts of liquid, and that's true whether you're looking at espresso cups, travel mugs, or mug warmers. The models we tested vary from less than 10 ounces to more than 16, and there's nothing close to a "standard" size. What you need really depends on how much coffee you drink. If one little mug normally lasts for hours, a smaller warmer is fine, but if you're a bigger coffee drinker, a larger machine will keep you from having to refill your mug over and over. Keep in mind that self-contained warming mugs hold less liquid than similar-sized mugs that don't have built-in electronics. For a quick ballpark on what capacity you might need, fill your current coffee mug with water and then dump it into a measuring cup.

Are coffee mug warmers worth it?

If you are serious about coffee, yes, especially if you tend to forget about your half-drank mug over the course of a few hours. You could microwave coffee to reheat it, but this heats the liquid up to or near boiling temperature, which damages the flavor and means you have to wait until your microwaved coffee cools back down to a drinkable temperature. A mug warmer keeps your coffee hot, but also keeps it tasting fresh by making sure the temperature stays steady. This is not the kind of appliance that absolutely every kitchen needs, but a coffee warmer makes a great gift for a coffee aficionado and is available at many different price points.

Are mug warmers a fire hazard?

The idea of keeping an electrically heated appliance on your desk or kitchen table might make you a little nervous, but most mug warmers include a timed automatic shut-off and other safety features that kick in if there's a power surge or the temperature gets too high. On top of that, mug warmers don't involve open flame and can't reach temperatures anywhere near those of a stove.

Of course, you still need to exercise common sense. Keep the warming plate or mug away from paper, plastic, or other loose materials, and don't leave it on and unattended for long periods of time. When you're not using the warmer, unplug it from the wall or shut it off.

What's the best temperature for coffee?

Coffee comes out best when brewed between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit, says Peter Giuliano , Chief Research Officer at the Specialty Coffee Association and Executive Director of the Coffee Science Foundation. But that's much hotter than you want to drink your coffee. Anything over about 160 degrees can cause burns, and few warmers even let you set the temperature that high. There's actually been some research into this topic, and a 2008 study set the average preferred serving temperature at 140. The most important thing is your personal preference, and most warmers offer at least some temperature customization. Test out a range of temperatures and see what you like.

Will a mug warmer work with any mug?

Some will and some won't. If the warmer's included mug houses the heating element, you'll have to use that mug. The base doesn't heat up; it only charges the battery. With a hot plate–style warmer—even one that includes its own mug—you can mostly use any vessel that will fit on the plate. However, check the manual to see if any materials are incompatible. Glass especially might not work with all warmers and can crack or shatter when heated. Also, a warmer might not be able to heat dense ceramic as quickly as an included mug made of a different material.

very unsafe and poor qulaity product !

The unit worked one time to test water boiling in a cup – on 2nd try it blew up with smoke coming from handle and power wire melting..... I opened the unit flimsy handle to see what went wrong and found simple solder joints for electric cord to element and a solder for ground wire on the heating element itself !!!! solder for ground had melted away creating an even worse situation for electrocution possibility. I deem this product unsafe and won't recommend it !

First alarmed when they automatically tripped my GFIC . First one caught on fire, second one made a loud pop and never worked again. Al in the span of 1 week.

Great water heater

I use this for heating the water in my ultrasonic parts washer. It heats the water up very fast to a boil.

The first time I used this product it started smoking out the cord end within 3 minutes. VERY Dangerous!!!
