Want to see Howler Monkeys in Belize? We’ve Got Your Destination!

An abundance of visitors come to Belize to see wildlife in a nation so sparsely populated, mile upon mile of rain forest, jungle and preserves keep this wildlife legacy safe for future generations. If asked to pick one animal visitors enjoy seeing most, adults and kids grin when agreeing: “Monkeys!” For North Americans who have never seen a monkey outside a zoo, a Monkey River Tour could be the high point of your travels.

Monkey River Tour

A Monkey River adventure takes travelers deep into the land of Howler Monkeys, primates so loud, they could never hide from predators without giving themselves away. To visit their neighborhood, you’ll first have to journey from Placencia (if you are vacationing in Placencia Peninsula) to Monkey River Village by boat, passing  mangrove swamp and other exotic scenery that includes wild flowers, scaly critters and (if you’re lucky) manatees, since these gentle marine mammals make their homes here among mangrove-filled estuaries.

Why visit Monkey River?

This one-of-a-kind excursion is fascinating and fun for people of all ages. Kids stare wide-eyed at monkeys whose cries far exceed decibels coming from heavy-metal rock bands! Adults learn more about life along a river bank that explodes with color and sounds: birds, animals and plants, all of which co-exist nicely here in southern Belize. Learn about medicinal plants and take a refreshing swim during your tour. You can look forward to Creole cookery prepared by villagers (please bring money for lunch) that is so tasty, even your taste buds will remember your Monkey River Tour.

Where in Belize is it located?

Monkey River Village is located in southern Belize’s Toledo District , in close proximity to towns like Placencia Village and Punta Gorda Town.

The best time to go

Since the monkeys stick around 12 months of the year, humans eager to see them can show up in Belize year-round, too. Given river access that’s required to get to your destination, it stands to reason that if there’s flooding during the green season, the trip could be a bit more thrilling, but that doesn’t mean tours are cancelled just because it rains!

Best way to get here

If you’ve a car, a map and/or a GPS system, your resort host can point you in the direction of the monkeys from anywhere in southern Belize. No worries about parking. There’s not a single car in the village which has only two streets, so it’s impossible to get lost in Monkey River Village. You can also get here by taking a 15-mile boat ride to the mouth of the Monkey River and then hike to the village. If you’re traveling from other areas in Belize, a tour service is your best bet.

Best way to experience Monkey River Tours

The most highly-recommended way to take a Monkey River Tour is to book a registered tour guide who is well-versed in the area’s animals, people and landscape. Wear hiking shoes to avoid surprises and long pants to protect you from bug bites and thorns. If you intend to swim in the river, bring a suit and don’t leave your sunglasses, sunscreen and hat back at your resort in your excitement. You’ll travel by boat and by foot through forest and along trails to reach Howler Monkey nirvana where you can let loose frustrations by howling at the simians. Travelers tell us that shouting at monkeys is better than therapy and these primates never send a bill!

About our Monkey River Tour

The Monkey River is a well-named watercourse in Belize’s southeastern Toledo District that has its outlet in the Caribbean Sea.

The Monkey River tour begins in Monkey River Town, a coastal village located just a short distance from the Placencia Village. From there, participants will board a boat and head upstream to explore one of the most pristine and untouched areas of the country, home to mangrove swamps and verdant jungles teeming with wildlife.

During the journey, an experienced tour guide will provide information about the wide variety of different plants, birds, and animals in the area, including giant iguanas, toucans, manatees, crocodiles, and different plants used for medicinal purposes by the locals.

Once deep into the heart of the jungle, the boat will dock on the banks. Participants will enjoy a light hike through the foliage, learning more about the plants and animals until they reach an area inhabited by black howler monkeys. These animals are renowned for having one of the loudest calls in the animal kingdom, able to be heard more than four miles away.

Although black howler monkeys flourish in this part of Belize, their numbers are dwindling elsewhere in Central America, making this region an important conservation area for these unique animals. Black howler monkeys live in troops of around a dozen individuals dominated by an alpha male.

Despite their name, only the adult males are black in color. Juveniles of both genders and adult females have a whitish-golden fur color with red highlights. Black howler monkeys are vegetarian, consuming a diet of mostly leaves but also some fruit. They have prehensile tails that act like an extra arm, helping them maintain a secure grip high up in the jungle canopy.

Black howler monkeys sleep or rest for up to 70% of the day. Because of the way their tails work with their arms and legs, walking on the ground is difficult for black howler monkeys. Normally, they spend their entire lives in the trees but do occasionally come down to the banks of the river to drink water.

After returning to the boat, participants will have a chance to enjoy a refreshing swim in the river in order to cool off from the heat. On the trip back to Monkey River Town, the tour will pass by several small villages where locals participating in daily tasks and fishing can be observed. Upon returning to Monkey River Town, participants will enjoy a delicious meal prepared onsite by a local family.

What is included:

Private guide, transportation to and from your accommodation, bottled water, lunch

What our clients are saying about our Monkey River Tour tour:

My kids wanted to see monkeys, so where better than the Monkey River? Wow. That boat tour truly takes you to some remote places in the jungle, and it was cool to see the villagers along the way. My kids loved the monkeys, which were super loud (as advertised), but my favorite part was the home-cooked meal. Very delicious and big portions. Great tour if you want to learn more about nature in Belize.

Howler Monkeys & Wildlife Adventures on Belize’s Monkey River

howler monkeys Belize

If you’re so wild about primates, you rarely check out bears, giraffes, and big cats when visiting zoos, there’s a biological reason for the attraction: Apes are so much like us, we identify with some of their characteristics. Whether you’re enthralled with chimps, orangutans, gorillas, or other species members, you’ll notice that their mannerisms are identical to ours, and like people, they maintain intense relationships while exhibiting sophisticated social behaviors.

Even kids understand how close bonds are between primate family members, which is why the media has gone out of its way to give youngsters inside looks at behaviors that are so close to that of humans, even skeptics see the bond. Watch this Canadian Broadcast kid’s program about apes and you’ll likely identify squabbles you’ve seen around your house:

Zoos are great. Jungles are better

If you’ve had plenty of time to devote to primate watching during zoo visits, you are going to find Eden when you get the chance to see these entertaining critters in the wild, and only Belize offers you close travel proximity, English-speaking folks, and indigenous monkeys guaranteed to amaze and delight. Belize is home to a loquacious population of Howler Monkeys, noisy apes that are so entertaining, that some visitors frequent Belize just to see and interact with them.

If you’ve never encountered a Howler Monkey , you’re in for a treat. This is “one of the few primate species with different coat colors in males and females,” said Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute scientists, but their most distinguishing biological feature is the “conversations” they carry on. They are so loud, that you can hear them 3 miles away, so when a family engages in jungle talk, plenty of visitors cover their ears!

Where you and the wild things can hang out

Belize Wildlife Adventures

Booking a Belize trip to hear Howler Monkeys for yourself begins with a Laru Beya Resort booking. This haven is on the Caribbean shoreline of the Placencia Peninsula where impressive all-inclusive packages , add-ons, and specials will have you grabbing a megaphone and shouting the news to your friends about this resort’s array of money-saving deals.

To make sure you get enough monkey business during your stay, the Best of Belize Adventure Add-on features an opportunity to go off on a Monkey River Boat Cruise and Jungle Hike that could bring you so close to these loud mouths, that you may find that the urge to scream back is irresistible. Your Monkey River Boat Cruise is but one of three components included within this add-on.

You’ll also snorkel at the world-famous Belize Barrier Reef and choose one more adventure from the menu: Maya Canopy Jungle Zipline and Waterfall Swimming, Cave Tubing and River Exploration, or the Xunantunich Maya Ruin & Inland Blue Hole Tour. We’re not monkeying around when we tell you that this in-person experience will blow your mind, so why not make your voice heard by booking this priceless experience immediately .

Cruise the winding Monkey River, looking for wildlife in the surrounding rainforest, and then enjoy a hike with a naturalist that will explain the plants' medicinal uses.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at a small village near the mouth of the Monkey River, where you will begin a leisurely cruise upstream. Along the way, the guide will provide enlightening commentary about the region's history, including how the economy boomed in the late 19th century when large volumes of bananas were exported.

Little evidence of that thriving time period remains, as the meandering Monkey River is bordered by undeveloped rainforest. Natural beauty and remarkably diverse flora and fauna are now the main attractions.

You can expect to see a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles sunning on the riverbanks, turtles popping their heads above the water's surface, and iguanas perched in the tree limbs. You might even spot a troop of black howler monkeys screeching in the forest.

Tropical birds are just as abundant along the river, especially wading birds such as herons, brightly colored tanagers and keel-billed toucans, the national bird of Belize. Toucans are easy to spot because of their large, colorful bills and how they croak like frogs.

Once you disembark, you will hike through the surrounding forest while the naturalist guide points out plants with medicinal qualities. For instance, leaves of the soursop are often brewed into a tea that reduces fever, and the wild yam has anti-inflammatory properties.

Easy-to-use travel guide for Belize

Monkey River and Manatee Watch Tour

April 8, 2019 By Angela Wu 3 Comments

Monkey River boat tour

Belize has the reputation of being a well-preserved jewel and its beauty can be experienced through the many nature and wildlife tours. One of these experiences is the Monkey River Tour and Manatee Watch that can be done from Placencia in Southern Belize.

This nature and wildlife tour involves exploring the Monkey River ecosystem, including the surrounding broadleaf forest, allowing visitors to be up close to nature and spot countless wildlife such as birds, iguanas, crocodiles, howler monkeys, and sometimes even tapirs. Additionally, the tour involves learning about the history of Monkey River Village, including a discussion of the devastation caused by Hurricane Iris in 2001.

And after cruising through the length of the Monkey River, visitors are treated to an exhilarating tour of Manatee watching near Harvest Caye.

Our Monkey River Experience

shuttle to placencia

The day’s adventure started at 4:30 AM for Pablo, Luis and I, since we had to travel from San Ignacio to Southern Belize.  Fortunately, we had a comfortable, air-conditioned van ride courtesy of Belize Ground Shuttle . And thanks to our amazing driver, Avram, we were able to meet our Monkey River guide on time for the early morning tour.

The drive from San Ignacio to the Hopkins junction, where we were picked up by Get To Know Belize Adventures , took us about 2 hours. From there, it took us another hour to get to the dock of the MnM Hardware & Service Station in Placencia. We arrived in a timely manner, ready to board the speed boat at 8:00 AM.

boat trip to monkey river

Accompanying us on the tour were an elderly couple from France and our guide, Jeremy. Jeremy wasted no time in introducing himself and discussing the tour that we were about to experience. He mentioned that we would be traveling along narrow mangrove paths on the coast of the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts to get to Monkey River Village.

On this particular day the sea was rather choppy, but Jeremy managed to skillfully maneuver the boat through the waves as smoothly as possible. On the way, we saw many cayes of varying sizes as well as mangrove patches and seabirds. After a 40-minute boat ride from Placencia, we made it to Monkey River Village.

Monkey River Village (also referred to Moneky River Town) is a small fishing community in the Toledo District . According to our guide, the population is around 200 residents and many of them are expert free divers and fishermen. Many make a livelihood out of fishing for barracuda, snook and tarpons, and free diving for lobsters. The village has little to no phone service or WIFI.

Monkey River Village

Arriving at the village, we were instructed by Jeremy to place our lunch orders, grab some bottles of water and use the restroom before continuing our tour. The lunch item for the day was baked chicken with rice and beans and coleslaw.

We collected our bottles of water and then headed back to the boat. From there, we sailed smoothly into the Monkey River. Both sides of the river were dense tropical broadleaf forest that had revived after the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Iris in 2001.

According to Jeremy, Hurricane Iris wiped out all vegetation along the Monkey River, and since then, the forest has been restored naturally. The many trunks of the fallen trees, for example, were eaten away by termites.

Howler Monkey at Monkey River

On our boat ride, we heard the loud howls of black howler monkeys in nearby treetops and saw many birds such as egrets, herons and flycatchers. Our boat sailed down the Monkey River for about 20 minutes before docking at a shallow opening that led to a small hiking trail into the forest.

The hike was interesting since it included Jeremy pointing out the variety of flora of the area. There were breadfruit trees, many different types of mushrooms and fungi, and a large patch of giant bamboo shoots. As we hiked, a troop of howler monkeys were right above our heads. Dangling and swinging through the low tree branches.

The hike wasn’t as excruciating as I had thought it would be. The trail was rather flat and the humidity was bearable. We hiked the trail for about 30 minutes before returning to our boat and heading back to Monkey River Village for lunch.

Monkey River hike

On our ride back, we saw an American crocodile relaxing near a shallow bank. It took me a second to spot it since it was camouflaged well by the low-lying tree branches. Jeremy got us as close as he could to the crocodile and as the boat drew closer to it, the crocodile leaped into the water.

On the way back we also saw daytime bats that attached themselves to the trunk of the trees. And we saw a nest of a bird called the Montezuma Oropendola. Their nests were large, woven sacks hanging from the branches of a young ceiba tree.

Jeremy mentioned that the male Montezuma Oropendolas would take about 2 weeks to construct the perfect nest for his partner. If the female bird does not like the nest, she will destroy it and male has to reconstruct it better – finding love is rough for these birds.

Making our way back to the village, we enjoyed a wonderful plate of rice and beans with baked chicken and coleslaw. It was super delicious – take my word for it. Being a Belizean and eating rice and beans for the entire life, I know what’s a good plate of rice and beans…and this was it! We washed our lunch down with a cold bottle of pineapple fanta.

Manatees in Placencia, Belize

After lunch, we boarded our boat and headed in the direction of Placencia. Near Harvest Caye, we started our manatee watching portion of the tour. Bear in mind, it’s more of a manatee spotting than watching. Getting to spot a manatee takes a good eye and patience. The only way we would see the manatees was when they would poke their nose out of the water to breathe. We saw about 3 manatees including a little baby and its mother.

We took photos of the manatees then headed back to Placencia. By this time, it was around 1:30 PM and we had enough time to explore Placencia before heading back to San Ignacio. Overall, it was a fun and fascinating trip that I’d do again.

Where is Monkey River located?

Monkey River is located in Southern Belize. It lies along a stretch of tropical broadleaf forest attached to the Monkey River Village. Monkey River Village is the northernmost village in Toledo.

How to get to Monkey River?

To get to Monkey River, you must take a 30-40 minute boat ride from Placencia going south to Toledo. The boat will traverse through mangrove channels and the coastal areas of Stann Creek and Toledo to get to Monkey River Village where the river resides. If you are not staying in Placencia, you would be required to travel from your location to Placencia. Belizing.com offers many shuttle transfers that will take you to Placencia for this tour.

What is the cost of the Monkey River tour?

The cost of the Monkey River tour with Get To Know Belize Adventure can range from $90 to $140 USD depending on your group size. If you’re traveling with a group of 7 or more, the cost of the tour is lowered to $90 USD per person.

What clothing/gear to bring along?

Some items that I would definitely recommend that you to bring along this tour are sunblock, bug spray, plenty of water, comfortable clothing and shoes, camera, and extra cash for tipping and souvenir shopping in Placencia.

When is the best time to go on a Monkey River tour?

The Monkey River tour can be done all year round as long as the weather permits. Keep in mind that you will be on a boat sailing through the Caribbean Sea and downstream a river and hiking through the forest, so optimally, you should book this tour during a sunny day.

We went to Placencia for several reasons in 2000. Stayed in a wonderful studio apt that was located over a very small cafe owned and operated by a sweet lady, Bernice. She was the best hostess we have ever had. We went on several tours up Monkey River into the Rainforest and our guide, Percy, mothers village for lunch. Percy was an excellent guide, very informative and entertaining. We went off shore fishing with a skilled guide and I caught 2 barracuda and husband scored a very large sunfish. Went snorkeling off Laughing Bird Cay, even though I could not swim. The underwater sea life was amazing. Our guide made lunch for all of us on the boat. He was the same guide that took us off shore fishing. He was fantastic. Our hostess always had fresh flowers in our room. Upon our arrival there was a wonderful meal of lobster tails, potatoes and salad. A bottle of champagne chilling and a chocolate heart shape cake on the table. She packed lunches for us when we went on a Mayan Ruins site(something my husband had always wanted to do). It was a very sad day for us when we had to leave. Had met so many nice people from all around the world. I know that the beautiful lady that took such great care of us has since passed way and the hurricane destroyed so much that we got to see and we were so thankful to have been there first.

COMMUNITY BABOON SANCTUARY VISITOR CENTER AND MUSEUM

A Black Howler Monkey Sanctuary

The Howler Monkey Sanctuary known as the Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) was established on the 23rd February 1985 and is located on the northern coastal plain of Belize.

CBS is unlike any other protected area or wildlife sanctuary in Belize. The nature and functioning of the CBS is completely embedded within the seven Belize River Valley communities that comprise it and it is inextricably linked to the Kriol culture and history of the region.

Our trained local guides offer a range of tours. For the casual visitor there are wonderful nature hikes where you can expect to experience Black Howler Monkeys firsthand, wonder at the majesty of the rainforest, and learn about traditional rainforest medicine.

The more adventurous can enjoy night tours through the rainforest, where you’ll be able to experience the local wildlife when it’s most active. Or take a river tour in search of crocodiles, monkeys, and a host of other wildlife.

<p>Belize does have <em>some </em>things in common with its neighbors – miles of pearly-white Caribbean coastline, dense tropical jungles punctuated with rushing waterfalls and a cultural diversity that's remarkable given its tiny 400,000-or-so population. Mestizo and Belizean Creole are the majority groups but 11% of the population is ethnic ancient Mayan, while an estimated 25,000 Mennonites live in secluded settlements up and down the country, many wearing plain dress and shunning modern technology. The Garifuna – an Afro-Indigenous group with their own language and distinctive, rhythmic music played with maracas and drums – make up roughly 6%.</p>

<p>Belize has a developed tourist industry, but historically its stream of American and Canadian visitors have eschewed the mainland in favor of the screensaver cayes and corals that lie a little way offshore. Tour guides will proudly tell you that Belize has the largest living barrier reef on Earth ('living' being the key word – Australia's Great Barrier Reef has endured devastating coral bleaching events in recent years), and its inquisitive sea turtles, vibrantly colored parrotfish and, between March and June, enormous (and harmless) whale sharks are happy to pose for divers, snorkelers and cameras.</p>

<p>Mexico has Chichen Itza, neighboring Guatemala has Tikal, but Belize has an embarrassment of ancient Mayan sites jockeying for your attention. Literally translated as 'stone woman,' Xunantunich might just be our favorite – a sprawling temple complex that thrived as Mayan city between 700-1000 AD, a stone's throw from the Guatemala border. Easily accessible from capital Belmopan and the airport in Belize City via the George Price Highway, visitors complete their journey over the Mopan River on a free hand-cranked cable car ferry. The site peaks with El Castillo, the 130-foot main temple complete with friezes of rain god Chaac. Climb to the top for 360-degree views over the surrounding jungle.</p>

<p>Xunantunich's main temple remains the second tallest building in Belize – and that's because the main temple at Caracol is the tallest. Further south along the Guatemalan border and set on a high forest plateau, the site was one of the great centers of Mayan power between the 6th and 8th centuries – a city that held up to twice as many inhabitants as today's Belize City. Obscured by dense jungle until its rediscovery in 1938, Caracol's soaring palaces and ancient ball courts are extremely under-touristed. That's partly because they lie at the end of a long and bumpy road through thick forest – an adventure in itself.</p>

<p>Completing our trio of jungle-encircled Mayan complexes is Lamanai, which means 'submerged crocodile' in the Maya language. Just poking out above the treeline, it's perhaps the most <em>Indiana Jones</em> of our three sites, set in northern Belize overlooking the New River Lagoon. Occupied for more than two millennia, the site's tallest temple is not currently climbable, but the nearby Jaguar Temple still offers exquisite canopy views. As with Caracol, the ruins are delightfully crowd-free, and some tourists choose to visit via a river boat excursion that doubles as a wildlife-watching tour.</p>

<p>The Mayans claim chocolate as their own invention (cacao's early history is murky, but they've got a strong case), and today workers at the Maya Chocolate Center outside Hopkins churn out the crumbly candy almost the same way their ancestors did in millennia past. A poster on the wall proudly commemorates the visit of Prince William, now heir to the British throne, and his wife Catherine as part of their Caribbean tour marking the then-Queen's platinum jubilee. The assembled press snapped away as the royal couple crushed the chocolate mix on rollers and sampled the cacao drink once sipped by the Mayan elite. "Che'il Mayan Chocolate," reads the poster, "where everyone's treated like royalty."</p>

<p>Garifuna music is the unofficial sound of Belize – soulful songs in the Garifuna language underpinned by the complex rhythms of Garifuna drums. Various hotels and local tour operators offer Garifuna cultural experiences in Hopkins, where you'll learn how to tap out rudimentary beats on the primero and segunda drums, with the waves of the Caribbean serving up a soothing backing track. Step two is Garifuna dance: spiritual, improvisational motions that require near-constant foot movement. Finish your afternoon by learning to cook 'hudut,' a traditional coconut and seafood stew that would put most surrounding restaurants to shame.</p>

<p>By far Belize's best-known natural wonder, the Blue Hole has spent decades on the front covers of guide books, and remains one of the country's main draws. A vast sinkhole stamped like an inkblot on the ocean, it's more than 1,000 feet across and resides in the middle of Lighthouse Reef, roughly 43 miles from the mainland. It's almost <em>too</em> big and <em>too</em> blue – the colorful fish and vibrant corals tend to stop at the perimeter, and from down on the water it's hard to get any sense of scale. We recommend taking a tourist flight above the feature, which you can do in a helicopter or light aircraft.</p>

<p>San Pedro proudly claims to be the "isla bonita" in Madonna's 1987 hit of the same name. The singer herself has denied this, but it's telling that it seemed a good fit. The only town on Ambergris Caye and the undisputed heavyweight of Belizean tourism, San Pedro's parasol-covered beaches and over-the-water bars are as close as Belize gets to the resorts of Barbados and Cancun. The real attraction lies just offshore; the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Belize's best-known dive site, a spread of splendid coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps. Submerge at Shark Ray Alley to drift among nurse sharks (pictured) and southern stingrays, both inquisitive species well-used to human presence.</p>

<p>San Pedro's likeable little brother, Caye Caulker is as laidback and low-key as San Pedro is loud and energetic. This tiny backpacker's paradise has no cars, and the only traffic signs tell cyclists to obey the island's motto, 'go slow.' The wonders of Hol Chan are on its underwater doorstep, but don't sleep on the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, where lucky swimmers could spot turtles and manatees in addition to the usual array of fish. A narrow channel called 'the Split' bisects the isle, and its deep, seaweed-less waters are perhaps the area's best.</p>

<p>Caribbean islands seem to fit the tourist fantasy more neatly than stretches of mainland Caribbean coast, but you can enjoy the seas of Belize just as easily when based onshore. The <a href="https://www.splashbelize.com/">Splash Dive Center</a> in Placencia is a great option if you're unsure where to start: their many itineraries include the sprawling reefs surrounding the teeny-tiny Silk Caye (pictured), Laughing Bird Caye and its flocks of belly-flopping pelicans, and the coral nurseries established by Fragments of Hope, a community organization restoring reef habitats one sprig of coral at a time.</p>

<p>Even when heading inland you should keep your swimsuit to hand. Waterfall pools make particularly idyllic swim spots, and the Maya King double waterfall between Hopkins and Placencia is probably the most popular – two calm pools brushed by trailing vines, one with changing rooms and a jump-off platform. During the rainy season the fall strengthens to a surging torrent – nature's equivalent of switching on the power shower.</p>

<p>A strange mixture of adrenaline and serenity, it's hard to quite describe the feeling of soaring above the canopy across a steep-sided river valley, impenetrable jungle rising on both sides as far as the eye can see. Seven zip lines criss-cross the South Stann Creek River – a short drive from the Maya King Waterfall and often included in the same tour – sending tourists hurtling between a series of sturdy wooden platforms barely visible among the trees. The rush of wind can feel overwhelming, but remember to look around and take in a view usually enjoyed only by helicopter cameramen filming nature documentaries.</p>

<p>You <em>could</em> see a jaguar almost anywhere in Belize – crossing a road, paddling down a river or even, very occasionally, prowling the outermost streets of a village. But you can bump up your chances by taking a tour through the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's only dedicated jaguar reserve that also houses jaguarundis, howler monkeys, snakes and more than 300 species of bird. Visitors should, however, manage their expectations. Jaguars are elusive and well-camouflaged, so you're much more likely to see evidence of jaguars – footprints and excrement – than the big cats themselves.</p>

<p>It may sound strange to fly to the home of so many fascinating creatures only to see them in captivity, but the Belize Zoo prides itself on being a rescue and rehabilitation facility as much as a place where children can gawp through glass. The zoo, just off the busy George Price Highway, takes in animals retrieved from the illegal wildlife trade, and enclosures are carefully designed to reflect natural habitats. You'll see animals that, realistically, you'd be exceptionally lucky to see in the wild, including long-nosed tapirs, nicknamed 'mountain cows;' margays and ocelots, both small, spotted, jaguar-like cats; and harpy eagles, giant jungle raptors with notoriously intimidating plumage.</p>

<p>The Black Hole Drop is <em>almost</em> as terrifying as it sounds. A 90-minute steep uphill hike takes you to the rim of a 300-foot-high sinkhole, where you'll have plenty of time to peer nervously down at the bottom of the basin while preparing to descend. In San Ignacio, in the thick forests of the Belizean interior, the  Ka'ana Resort's  string of lavish villas and suites provide the perfect springboard for nature and adventure. In Hopkins, a blend of culture and coast, the  Lodge at Jaguar Reef  offers an over-the-sea bar and private plunge pools, and hosted Prince William and Kate Middleton in their Seafront Suite in 2022. And in Placencia, beach haven and gateway to the Caribbean, the  Itz'ana Resort  serves up sumptuous spa treatments and three-course dinners on the beach.
