The Long Run: Don Felder Talks Soundtrack of Summer Tour, Eagles Highlights and More

don felder tour playlist

Former Eagles guitarist/songwriter — not to mention multi-Grammy winner — Don Felder isn't one to simply rest on his laurels.

In addition to penning his best-selling memoir in 2008, Felder’s most recent album, 2012's Road to Forever , has done incredibly well on the classic rock charts and recently was re-released as an extended-edition package with four additional songs.

Felder is out on the road now with Styx and Foreigner in what’s being billed the Soundtrack of Summer tour. The jaunt coincides with the release of a new album of the same name. It features a collection of hits from the bands, and finishes off with a brand-new interpretation of the Eagles' “Hotel California."

I recently spoke to Felder about the Soundtrack of Summer tour, his early years with the Eagles and much more. Check out the interview below.

GUITAR WORLD: How did the Soundtrack of Summer project come about?

I’ve known the Styx guys for many years. We’ve done many benefits together in the past and started doing some shows together. Tommy [Shaw] and I became good friends, and he even volunteered some of his time to writing lyrics and singing on my last CD, Road to Forever . So when the idea for doing a Styx and Foreigner tour came up and my name was mentioned, I said "Absolutely!" The catalog of these three bands is just magnificent. I’m excited to be a part of it.

I do some of the Eagles songs I recorded and played live with the band for 27 years. Songs like “Hotel California," “Heartache Tonight," “Those Shoes” and a version of “Seven Bridges Road” that we used to do with the Eagles years ago. We even do a version of my song “Heavy Metal,” which was something the audience used to yell out for us to do during the Hell Freezes Over tour [laughs].

What is it about classic rock that makes it so timeless and special?

Great songs really carry an era, and back in the Sixties and Seventies, there were a lot of great songwriters. When you think about the music from that era that has survived, it's because they were great songs people really bonded with. It’s the reason people are still going out to see the shows today.

How did you hook up with the Eagles?

I joined the band in 1974 and was working with David Crosby and Graham Nash at the time. I had already known the guys in the Eagles for years; Bernie Leadon and I had actually known each other since high school. One day they called me up and asked me to come in and do a session for them. So I went over and played on the song "Good Day In Hell." I remember they called me back the next day and asked me to join the band.

What's the origin of “Hotel California”?

We were in the process of writing songs for our next record, and I had rented a beach house in Malibu. I had a little reel to reel and every time I had an idea, I would go in and record it. I remember I was sitting on the couch in Malibu playing guitar when out came that progression. So I played it a few more times and then went back and recorded it and later put some bass and a few more guitar parts on it. I put it on a reel along with about a dozen other ideas I was working on and gave it to the band. I told them that if there were any ideas on there they wanted to finish to just let me know.

Sure enough, [Don] Henley called me up a few days later and said, "Yeah, I found one that has kind of a Mexican, reggae, bolero sound." I immediately knew which one he was talking about. Two songs actually came out of those ideas. One became "Victim of Love" and the other became "Hotel California."

Is it true you once gave guitar lessons to Tom Petty?

There was a store in Gainesville, Florida, called Lipham Music where I used to teach guitar. Tom is a few years younger than me; I remember one day he came in wanting to take guitar lessons. At the time, he was playing bass in a band called the Rucker Brothers Band, but he didn't think playing bass was a cool way to front the band so he wanted to play guitar. There were actually a lot of people from Gainesville who went on to have great careers. Steven Stills and I had a band together when we were 14. Bernie Leadon and I were in bands together and went on to the Eagles. Duane Allman taught me how to play slide guitar. A lot of people from that area went on to become well-known.

How did the recording of The Long Run contribute to the first breakup of the Eagles?

We had been on and off the road and in and out of the studio for years before that album. We had never really gotten any real time to recharge and recoup, and were at the point of exhaustion. Not to mention the fact that we had just gotten off of Hotel California with this monstrous hit and now had the added pressure of having to match it or do even better. It was a difficult time. There were a lot of breakdowns, anger outbursts and other things that were going on.

At that point, I thought it was the end of our career as the Eagles. That's why the album cover is black and looks like a funeral. The photographs inside are all darkly lit. It just came off feeling like, “This is the end...it's been a very long run.”

If you had to pick one moment from you career that’s most memorable, what would it be?

I remember it being a few days before our New Year’s Eve Millennium show [which also happened to be the last show Felder would perform with the Eagles]. We had a press conference, and the RIAA presented us with an award for the largest-selling album of the 20th century [ The Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 ]. It hit me in the forehead like a Louisville Slugger. Nobody had ever really kept track of how many records we had sold or where we were in comparison to anybody else. It was just overwhelming. Especially when you think about all of the other people who've made records: the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.

A lot of people have hallways in their homes that are lined with gold and platinum records from all of their life’s work, but not me. I only have one.

About Don Felder

Having already established himself on both coasts as a seasoned session player and touring guitarist, Don Felder made his debut as a member of the Eagles in 1974, bringing his influence and fluid rock chops to some of band's best-known material. Joining Glenn Frey and later Joe Walsh, Felder was part of one of rock & roll's great guitar batteries whose signature harmonic sound -- particularly on the Felder-penned "Hotel California" -- helped usher in the Eagles' most commercially successful era. Following their breakup in 1980, he resumed his role as a sessionman, racking up a number of high-profile credits while also composing for film and releasing a solo album. Felder rejoined the Eagles during their reunions of the mid- and late '90s before becoming embroiled in a tumultuous legal battle with bandmembers Frey and Don Henley following his 2001 firing from the group. He later toured with his own Don Felder Band and released two more solo outings, the latter of which, 2019's American Rock & Roll, featured an impressive array of well-known guests from the rock community. Born on September 21, 1947 in Gainesville, Florida, Felder discovered rock & roll via an Elvis Presley TV appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which led to Felder picking up the guitar at the age of 11. Throughout his teenage years, Felder played in various groups (including the Continentals, which at separate times, also featured Stephen Stills and future Eagles bandmate Bernie Leadon). After the band split up, Felder relocated up to New York, where he appeared on an obscure self-titled debut by a group called Flow, in 1970. Although the group split up soon after, Felder kept his chops up by playing with others, and in the process, mastered several different musical styles. Tired of the New York scene, Felder relocated once more, to Boston, where he worked steadily in a recording studio for two years -- picking up pointers on how to make records via engineer work. When old friend Leadon came through town with his new band, country-rockers the Eagles, Felder joined the group for an on-stage jam session, and took Leadon's advice regarding relocating to California, where a vast amount of session work beckoned. Felder made the trip in 1972, and spent the next year recording and touring with folk singer/songwriter David Blue. Afterwards, Felder was invited to serve as a touring guitarist for Graham Nash, but when he was asked to join the Eagles, he accepted (even though he suspected the band wouldn't last for much longer, due to inter-band hostility). Felder contributed guitar to such hit Eagles albums as 1974's On the Border and One of These Nights, but the band was still searching for the missing piece to their puzzle. The missing link turned out to be guitarist Joe Walsh, who replaced Leadon and contributed to the Eagles' massive hit, 1976's Hotel California, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time. After an oft-delayed follow-up was issued in 1979, The Long Run, and its ensuing supporting tour wrapped up (documented on 1980's Eagles Live), the Eagles announced they were splitting up in 1982. Felder subsequently contributed solo tracks to the motion picture soundtracks for Heavy Metal and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and even issued a star-studded solo full-length in 1983, Airborne (which included contributions from Kenny Loggins, Dave Mason, and Timothy B. Schmit, among others). In the wake of the Eagles' split and his solo release, Felder kept himself busy by guesting on other artists' albums, including the Bee Gees' Living Eyes, Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna and Wild Heart, Diana Ross' Eaten Alive, Bob Seger's Distance, Joe Walsh's There Goes the Neighborhood and You Bought It, You Name It, plus Robin Zander's self-titled release. But for the better part of the late '80s and early '90s, Felder shied away from the music biz, while rumors of an impending full-on Eagles reunion tour began to circulate. The rumors eventually proved to be fact in the spring of 1994, when the group reunited for an MTV concert taping (released the same year as Hell Freezes Over), featuring old tunes alongside a pair of new compositions. The group's ensuing tour proved to be a blockbuster success, but a rumored all-new studio album by the reunited group failed to materialize. Along with all former and current members of the Eagles, Felder performed at their 1998 induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and remained a member until 2001 when he was fired from the band. Claiming wrongful termination and a handful of contract breaches, Felder filed a pair of lawsuits against Henley and Frey. When Felder attempted to publish his autobiography, Heaven and Hell: My Life in The Eagles (1974–2001), Henley and Frey countersued, calling it a band "tell-all." While they never reconciled personally, the legal battles between the three musicians were settled out of court in 2007 and Felder's book was published a year later. By this time, he had been touring for several years with his own group, the Don Felder Band, and in 2012, nearly three decades after his solo debut, he released a follow-up album, Road to Forever. Over the next few years he and his group toured alongside other veteran rock acts like Foreigner, Styx, and REO Speedwagon while he wrote material for his next album. Released in 2019, American Rock & Roll was an inclusive and celebratory set that included a lengthy guest list of rock notables from Slash and Sammy Hagar to Bob Weir, Mick Fleetwood, and Alex Lifeson. ~ Greg Prato

Don Felder is renowned as a former lead guitarist of The Eagles, one of the most popular and influential rock groups of our time. No matter how you look at it, this year is shaping up to be the Year of the Fingers — Don “Fingers” Felder, that is. Felder, a true American rock and roll guitar hero, is very much looking forward to building upon his rich legacy as one of the most innovative riff-generating songwriters of the modern rock era while continuing his growth as a featured touring and recording solo artist. Don’s discerning musical taste ultimately bore much great fruit in iconic, prime rock-era Eagles songs. Bear witness to how his matchless lead-guitar tone added extra fuel to “Already Gone,” “One of These Nights,” “Take It to the Limit,” and “New Kid in Town,” in addition to his co-writing “Victim of Love,” “Those Shoes,” and his most popular co-creation, “Hotel California,” which he recast in an entirely new way for the Eagles’ Hell Freezes Over in 1994.

Ruling the adult contemporary charts with its sunny, tropical pop sound in the 1970s, Pablo Cruise reached the top 10 with mega hits “Whatcha Gonna Do When She Says Goodbye?” and “Love Will Find A Way.”  After a long hiatus (over 25 years!), the band is back on tour – featuring three of the original founders: David Jenkins (guitar, vocals), Cory Lerios (keys, vocals) and Steve Price (drums, percussion), plus two new band members:  Larry Antonino (bass, vocals) and Robbie Wyckoff (vocals, percussion). To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event!

Firefall is the classic American country rock band that formed in Boulder, Colorado, in 1974. It was founded by Rick Roberts, former member of the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Jock Bartley, who had been Tommy Bolin's replacement in Zephyr. The band's biggest hit single, "You Are the Woman", peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard chart in 1976. Other hits included "Just Remember I Love You" (#11 in 1977), "Strange Way" (#11 in 1978), "Cinderella" (#34 in 1977), "Headed for a Fall" (#35 in 1980), and "Staying with It" (#37 in 1981).

On Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, The Pre-Show Playlist Is Full Of Easter Eggs

Fans can jam to a slew of hits before the singer takes the stage.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

Before Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show, fans know it’s time for the pre-party, and the singer has provided the perfect soundtrack. Swift expertly curated a selection of 40 songs that play before she goes onstage at Eras Tour , and many of her selections included Easter eggs, from hints at future collaborations to nods to her opening acts .

The playlist features a variety of artists and genres all designed to pump you up for the concert. From Grammy-winning hitmakers like Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson, to up-and-coming artists like Raye and Griff, fans can expect to hear many hits as Swift gets ready to enter the stage (in a literal janitor’s cart ).

Read on for Swift’s full Eras Tour pre-show playlist, including the songs she added for 2024 stops and the three hits that always play before she takes the stage.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist

Lana del rey - “diet mountain dew”.

Fans who arrive at the Eras Tour early will be greeted by the voice of Swift’s “Snow on the Beach” collaborator Lana Del Rey. Swift chose one of her earliest singles, 2012’s “Diet Mountain Dew,” for the playlist, proving she’s a longtime fan of Del Rey.

Selena Gomez - “Look At Her Now”

Swift gives a shoutout to her BFF Selena Gomez by including “Look At Her Now,” which she danced to when Gomez performed the track at the 2019 American Music Awards.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

HAIM - “My Song 5”

Swift has been friends with Alana, Danielle, and Este Haim for so long that she’s often called the fourth Haim sister, and she proves her loyalty by including one of their earliest singles, “My Song 5,” on the playlist.

Griff - “Shade of Yellow”

Swift has shown support to Griff in the past by sending flowers and including her on Apple Music playlists, so it only makes sense that she also puts “Shade of Yellow” on her pre-show playlist.

niceboy ed - “life you lead”

This song started a slew of Swiftie conspiracy theories after Swift used it in a 2022 TikTok video, and fans discovered that niceboy ed’s identity is completely unknown. The mysterious artist has only released two more singles since then, and their inclusion on the Eras Tour playlist only raises more questions about who they are.

Suki Waterhouse - “Moves”

While it’s not one of her most public friendships, Swift has been friends with Suki Waterhouse for quite some time, even singing her praises to SSENSE in August. “She is the wildest person I know who I would also trust to keep any secret,” she said of Waterhouse.

boygenius - “True Blue”

Phoebe Bridgers, one of the boygenius members, collaborated with Swift on “Nothing New” and opened for her on the May 2023 dates of the Eras Tour, so it’s only natural that her band with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus make an appearance on the pre-show playlist.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

Florence + the Machine - “King”

Swift’s inclusion of Florence + the Machine’s “King” was seen as a nod to her constant collaborator Jack Antonoff, who produced the song, but it also turned out to be a Swiftian Easter egg for her track with Florence, “Florida!!!” on The Tortured Poets Department .

HAIM - “3 AM”

Swift also included HAIM’s 2020 track “3 AM,” from their Grammy Album of the Year-nominated Women in Music Pt III .

Lil Nas X - “THAT’S WHAT I WANT”

In an adorable full-circle moment, Lil Nas X attended one of Swift’s Chicago shows in June and danced to his own hit while waiting for her to take the stage.

MUNA - “Number One Fan”

MUNA was among the many Eras Tour openers in the U.S., so it’s natural that their anthem, “Number One Fan,” gets a shoutout on the playlist.

Lenny Kravitz - “American Woman”

Swift used Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman” as her entrance song on the Red Tour, playing it right before she took the stage. Its inclusion on the Eras Tour playlist is a nice throwback nod.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

Ethel Cain - “American Teenager”

Swift cleverly contrasts “American Woman” with Ethel Cain’s “American Teenager,” giving two different perspectives on girlhood.

Taylor Swift - “False God”

It’s not known why Swift chose Lover deep-cut “False God” to be the lone representative of her catalog on her pre-show playlist, but it is one of the album’s best songs, so I’m not mad about it.

Hamilton Leithauser - “A 1000 Times”

Singer-songwriter Hamilton Leithauser is friendly with Lucy Dacus, who’s mentioned on Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department , which proves there should be a Six Degrees of Taylor Swift function à la Kevin Bacon .

Kenny Chesney - “Big Star”

Swift was supposed to open for Kenny Chesney on one of his tours but had to drop out because Bud Light was a sponsor, and she was underage at the time. However, the country singer gave her a bonus that jumpstarted her career, so her inclusion of “Big Star” nods to his act of kindness.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

Steve Lacy - “Bad Habit”

Swift was clearly feeling Steve Lacy’s performance of “Bad Habit” at the 2022 Grammys, which carried over to the Eras Tour.

Bakar - “Hell N Back”

Bakar released “Hell N Back” in 2019, but it only started going viral in the past year, when it also seemingly caught Swift’s attention.

Saweetie - “Best Friend (feat. Doja Cat)”

Given that Swift has many best friends, some of which are featured on the Eras Tour, it’s no surprise that she added Saweetie’s ode to friendship to her playlist.

Doja Cat - “Boss Bitch”

Doja Cat may also have something to do with Swift putting “Best Friend” on her playlist, as she also included the rapper’s viral track “Boss Bitch.”

King Princess - “For My Friends”

Swift has been a fan of King Princess since she rose to fame, even mentioning the singer during her Billboard Woman of the Decade speech in 2019.

Florence + the Machine - “Free”

If “King” wasn’t enough of an Easter egg, Swift's addition of a second Florence song, “Free,” to her pre-show playlist should have been a surefire sign of what was to come.

BLACKPINK - “Pink Venom”

Swift was spotted dancing when BLACKPINK performed “Pink Venom” at the 2022 Video Music Awards. Clearly, she’s a Blink.

Janet Jackson - “All For You”

Swift and Del Rey nodded to Janet Jackson’s 2000 hit “All For You” on “Snow on the Beach,” making it a fitting song to play before the Eras Tour.

Paramore - “Misery Business”

Not only is Swift longtime friends with Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams, but she also collaborated with her on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) . Plus, the band opened for the first two shows of the Eras Tour and rejoined Swift in Europe, where she specifically requested that they add “Misery Business” to their setlist. Basically, all roads led to this song going on the playlist.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

boygenius - “$20”

Swift was inspired to add another boygenius song, perhaps after Baker and Dacus joined Bridgers during her first Eras Tour set.

Fall Out Boy - “My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark”

Swift added Fall Out Boy’s long-winded 2013 hit a few shows into the tour, likely as an Easter egg for their collaboration “Electric Touch” on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

Raye & 070 Shake - “Escapism.”

Raye is a known fan of Swift , praising her for re-recording her first six albums.

Faith Hill - “This Kiss”

Faith Hill and her husband, Tim McGraw, have been friends and mentors of Swift since the start of her career (with the latter being the namesake of her debut single), so it’s no surprise that one of Hill’s biggest hits gets a nod during the Eras Tour.

Sabrina Carpenter - “Nonsense”

Swift's inclusion of Sabrina Carpenter’s viral hit “Nonsense” turned out to be an Easter egg hinting at her being the opening act for Eras Tour dates in Latin America, Australia, and Singapore.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

Ice Spice - “In Ha Mood”

If you hear Ice Spice’s voice blaring through the speakers, it’s time to head to your seat. Swift including the rapper’s breakout single “In Ha Mood” ended up being an Easter egg for the duo’s “Karma” remix.

Lady Gaga - “Applause”

Swift is a noted Little Monster, having praised Lady Gaga’s single “Applause” back in 2013. As the penultimate song to play before the Eras Tour, it plays as if Swift is demanding applause and hyping up the crowd for her arrival.

Lesley Gore - “You Don’t Own Me”

As the two-minute-and-13-second countdown begins, Lesley Gore’s 1963 classic “You Don’t Own Me” plays over the speakers and usually causes an empowering sing-along in the crowd. It’s an apt choice for Swift’s pre-entrance song amid her re-recording process, sending a clear message that her music is hers and hers alone.

New Songs Added To 2024 Eras Tour Playlist

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Pre-Show Playlist Includes Easter Eggs

Holly Humberstone - “Down Swinging”

Australian artist Holly Humberstone seems to be a newer discovery for Swift, given how the two singers have yet to speak about each other.

Maisie Peters - “History of Man”

Maisie Peters’ new single was produced by Swift’s good friend and collaborator Ed Sheeran, making its inclusion a subtle nod to both artists.

Camila Cabello - “I LUV IT (feat. Playboi Carti)”

Camila Cabello previously opened for Swift on 2018’s Reputation Stadium Tour, and given how Swift added her new single “I LUV IT” to her playlist, they have seemingly stayed close since then.

Doja Cat - “Agora Hills”

Swift adding a third Doja Cat song, the 2023 single “Agora Hills,” to the playlist shows how big of a stan she is.

Gracie Abrams - “Risk”

At first, Swift's addition of Abrams’ new single “Risk” to the playlist seemed like a nod to her frequent Eras Tour opener, who will rejoin the tour in October. However, it ended up also being another Easter egg about their collaboration “Us” on Abrams’ upcoming album, Secret of Us .

Rudimental - “Waiting All Night (feat. Ella Eyre)”
