Milford Sound Day Tours

milford sound tours new zealand

Beautiful Milford Sound is New Zealand’s best known fiord, and the only one that can be reached by road. This pristine natural attraction is part of the World Heritage Fiordland National Park, in the south west of the South Island, and is famed for its pristine natural beauty and remote atmosphere. Māori are believed to have discovered Milford Sound more than 1,000 years ago, returning seasonally to collect the prized pounamu (greenstone). The fiord extends 15km inland from the wild Tasman Sea and is regularly visited by wildlife including penguins, seals and dolphins. Visit Milford Sound on a GreatSights sightseeing tour and experience a world of cascading waterfalls, sheer rock faces and dense rainforest.

Your sightseeing tour to Milford Sound is made even more enjoyable by our glass-roofed coaches. These provide spectacular panoramic views as you travel along the Milford Road – one of the world’s most scenic roads – and through the Homer Tunnel, before arriving for your Milford Sound cruise. Enjoy views of iconic Mitre Peak from the head of the sound. This striking mountain rises 1,692 metres from the south shore and is named for its resemblance to a bishop’s mitre (headdress).

The Best Milford Sound Tours for 2024

The best tours: a summary.

If you’re short on time and just want a quick recommendation, these are our top picks, taking into account value and quality.

If you’d prefer to compare each option for yourself, read on…

The Best Milford Sound Cruises (Self-Drive)

If you’ve got your own car, you might prefer to drive yourself into Milford Sound. The road in is stunning, and for most of the year is totally manageable for confident drivers.

Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to stop and enjoy the sights on the way in and out , and be aware that the Homer Tunnel operates in only one direction at a time. This means you might have to wait for a while before you’re allowed through – whatever you do, don’t leave this part of the journey until the last minute!

If you choose to drive yourself to Milford Sound, you will want to book one of the following cruises…

1. Join a Small Boutique Cruise

Cruise milford.

Cruise Milford is one of our favourite Milford Sound tour operators.

Run by a kiwi family, this is a company that really cares about showing off the best of the region.

They will take you to all the spectacular highlights along the Milford Sound, always with guides (and your captain) close to hand to answer any questions you may have.

Not only that, but the boats are modern and comfortable, and passenger numbers are limited to give guests the best experience possible. There are even free drinks and snacks on offer throughout the tour.

This is the crew we sail with when we head to Milford Sound.

However, if Cruise Milford is booked out, Mitre Peak Cruises offers a similar small-boat experience.

Did you know? Cruise Milford also offers a cruise/kayak combo which is perfect if you’d like to be a little more active in your exploration.

A white ferry with tourists cruising on Milford Sound.

Mitre Peak Cruises

Mitre Peak also offer small-boat tours of Milford Sound.

Much like Cruise Milford, a trip on Mitre Peak will guarantee you room to move about. It will also ensure you get nice and close to the waterfalls the area is known for.

2. Hop on a bigger boat

Pure milford.

If you’re looking for a unique Milford Sound boat tour then take a look at this nature cruise offered by Pure Milford (previously known as JUCY Cruise).

You’ll be exploring the fjord on a glass-roof catamaran, complete with spacious outdoor viewing decks.

This is one of the most luxurious boats cruising the sounds, including comfortable sofas and lounging areas throughout the ship.

Not only that but HD cameras are used to project footage to the TVs within the catamaran. This gives you the chance to admire the outdoors even if you aren’t able to stand on the deck (or perhaps don’t want to do so on a rainy day).

Waterfalls as seen from a bus.

Southern Discoveries

Southern Discoveries is the original Milford Sound cruise company.

Get up close and personal with the fjord from the open top deck, or marvel at its beauty from the full-height windows, where you can be tucked up warm inside.

Either way, you’ll get to enjoy the Milford Sounds most spectacular sights from a stylish and comfortable vessel.

Not only that but there’s a licensed bar on board, free tea and coffee, and ongoing commentary from the skipper.

If you choose the ‘discover more’ package, you’ll even get to visit their underwater observatory. This is a big hit with families!

Catch the Sights from a Motor Yacht with RealNZ

This tour will see you cruise the full length of the Milford Sound (as they all do), heading right past St. Anne’s Point Lighthouse into the Tasman Sea.

With purpose-built observation lounges and large deck areas, the RealNZ vessels are perfect for wildlife-watching and admiring the breathtaking views. They’re also full of character, making them a special way to see the sights.

This Milford Sound cruise is run by RealNZ, who have been offering spectacular tours in New Zealand since 1954, so you know you’re in for a treat.

These boats are also available for overnight stays which are out-of-this-world amazing (check out #12 on this list)!

3. The best Milford Sound combo cruise (self-drive): Southern Discoveries Nature Cruise, Kayaking and Underwater Observatory

This trip (which you’ll start and end at Milford Sound) gives you a totally unique perspective of the Milford Sound through its underwater observatory.

There, you’ll get to observe the fjord’s unique marine life. You’ll also get to see rare coral species that are unique to this area.

This fiord day cruise also includes a guided kayaking experience, where you’ll head out on the beautiful waters of the Milford Sound. The sense of being totally immersed in the sound, whilst floating right on the water is unlike anything else.

And of course, you’ll also board their cruise.

With the cruise, underwater observatory, and kayaking tour, you’ll need to allow around 6 hours for this experience.

We love that this tour allows you to witness this natural marvel from almost every angle.

Four people in a yellow kayaks.

Small-Group Tours to Milford Sound

Small-group tours allow you to sit back and relax while someone else does the driving. They’ll be well-equipped to get you into Milford Sound, regardless of the weather, and will be a wealth of knowledge, sharing local history and stories.

It’s a long day on the road if you’re travelling from Queenstown , and for this reason, tours are often preferred.

By joining a small-group tour you’ll have the benefit of more time with your guide and a touch more flexibility when compared to a larger group.

Did you know? The cost of your cruise is included in the advertised price, both for small group and coach tours. This makes budgeting easy.

4. Small-group tours from Queenstown

Altitude tours.

When it comes to intimate small-group experiences, Altitude Tours is the best tour operator around.

If you choose this tour, not only will you get a 2-hour cruise of the Milford Sound on board Mitre Peak Cruises , but you’ll also get to see some fantastic spots along the way.

This includes the beautiful lakes of Wakatipu and Te Anau , Eglington Valley, Mirror Lakes, and Knobs Flat. You’ll then drive through Homer Tunnel to reach the iconic Milford Sounds!

What’s more, their small-group tours take place in a glass-roof van too so you’ll get to enjoy the epic scenery all around you as you travel. With personal service, a maximum of 16 passengers, and panoramic views right throughout the day, it’s hard to beat Altitude for tours leaving Queenstown.

Did you know? Altitude Tours also offers a great van-cruise-fly tour to allow you to see Milford from the road and the sky.

Cheeky Kiwi Travel

If Altitude Tours doesn’t have availability for a small-group tour out of Queenstown, check with Cheeky Kiwi Travel .

5. Join Fiordland Tours on a small-group Day Trip from Te Anau

If you’re staying in Te Anau, then a day trip with Fiordland Tours is highly recommended.

We have been on tours with Ray twice and both times were amazing… I always recommend Fiordland Tours. Rae Harford, NZTT member.

This particular tour will take you to the Milford Sounds in a comfortable mini-van, before joining up with the Southern Discoveries nature cruise.

Along the way, you’ll stop off at 17 fantastic photo spots, enjoy scenic walks, and learn all about the geology and wildlife in this area.

Fiordland Tours limits this experience to 15 people, so you won’t have to worry about the tour being overcrowded. You’ll also be out from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, making it great value for money.

Our members frequently rave about the service they get on board with Ray, so why not try him out for yourself?

We went with Ray to Milford Sound a couple of years ago and were thrilled to have a smaller group, with heaps of information and genuine care that we had a great day. Lyndal Rwheeler, NZTT member.

If Fiordland Tours doesn’t have availability for a small-group tour out of Te Anau, check with Cheeky Kiwi Travel .

Coach Trips to Milford Sound

Transporting more people, coach tours are another way to get into Milford Sound without the need to drive yourself.

Like a small-group tour, you’ll benefit from professional commentary and can rest easy knowing that you’ll make it to your cruise at the most appropriate time.

Though a coach service isn’t as personal, you will have an incredible view from high up in the bus. These tours also tend to be more affordable than small-group trips, making them a great choice for those travelling on a budget.

6. Our favourite large boat: Depart from Queenstown or Te Anau with Pure Milford

If you’d prefer a coach day trip, then make sure you check out this tour.

As you explore Fiordland, you can relax in your reclining seat and admire the scenery through the coach’s glass roof!

In addition to your Milford Sound sailing onboard Pure Milford, your tour includes a buffet lunch. What else could you need?

If departing Queenstown, your tour will start at approximately 7 am and you won’t return until about 8 pm, so be prepared for a full day of adventures!

A long bus travelling at the foot of a cloudy mountain.

7. Travel to Milford from Te Anau or Queenstown, with Southern Discoveries – the best bus

This is another fantastic Milford Sound tour option from Southern Discoveries.

Leaving from Te Anau or Queenstown, this day trip will take you to plenty of awesome spots along the way including Te Anau, Eglington Valley, and our favourite spot, the Mirror Lakes.

You’ll travel on board a tall coach, providing an excellent vantage point. Plus, with glass overhead, you’ll feel immersed in the native bush and forest all around you.

You’ll then head out on a 2-hour nature cruise onboard the Southern Discoveries boat. From the water, you’ll be able to get up close with the fjords’ natural wonders and wildlife.

As with all these tours, this is a big day on the road (but not as big from Te Anau), but don’t worry the friendly guides will be there for you every step of the way, ensuring your comfort and enjoyment.

Brand new interior of a bus with transparent ceiling and windows.

8. Join RealNZ on a Coach Tour to Milford Sound from Queenstown – onboard a classic ship

If you love the character of the RealNZ boats, or are pining after an overnight stay in the sounds (but your budget just won’t stretch), this could well be the coach tour for you.

RealNZ follows a similar itinerary to the other coaches on this trip, transporting you in a comfortable bus (complete with glass ceiling – perfect for those towering mountain views).

Once in the fiord, you’ll sail onboard either the Milford Mariner (a motor yacht) or Milford Haven (more like the other boats on this list) and have the opportunity to purchase food and drinks from the onboard cafe and bar.

Both boats are fabulous, but we’re particularly fond of the Milford Mariner (which is also the ship they sail for the overnight trips – more on that next up).

A long bus in front of a cloud-covered mountain.

9. Stay the Night on the Sound: Cruise Overnight on the Milford Mariner

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, then why not book an overnight cruise on the Milford Sound?

We LOVED our cruise on Milford Mariner in January – such an awesome bucket list experience, definitely recommend it to anyone on the fence! Philippa Griffith, NZTT member.

You’ll be spending the night aboard the Milford Mariner, and will cruise the entire length of the fjords. That includes taking a trip out to the Tasman Sea, paddling in kayaks and riding in the tender.

After spending a day exploring the fjord, you’ll settle down for a fresh carvery buffet and then you can head to the licensed bar. Make sure you spend some time up on the deck too if you’re a keen stargazer!

The vessel sleeps up to 60 people and the cabins are incredibly spacious too, each with ensuite bathrooms.

The onboard experience feels surprisingly intimate, making this one of the very best NZ tourism experiences around.

I was lucky enough to do an overnight cruise with RealNZ. We self drove to Milford Sound to meet the cruise for 4 pm. The staff were informative and friendly, food delicious and plentiful and staying the night on the sound was an experience I’ll never forget – so peaceful, so many stars and so quiet! I felt a million miles from the rest of the world, and watching the sunrise and animals wake in the morning was magical. The bed was comfy and warm, showers hot and all staff on board so friendly and helpful. Wine and beer was available for purchase (credit card only, no debit or cash). I can’t recommend the overnight option or RealNZ highly enough Madison Elizabeth, NZTT member.

Head to Milford by Air

The fastest way to get to Milford Sound is undoubtedly by air, particularly if you’re travelling from Queenstown.

Far more than just a convenience though, Fiordland National Park is spectacular from the sky!

10. Book a Fly-Cruise-Fly Package and See the Best of Milford in Less Time

Milford Sound is scenic no matter where you view it from, but there’s something special about witnessing it from the air .

Hop on board your small fixed-wing plane to enjoy Milford Sound from the perfect vantage point. Travel from Queenstown to Milford Sound, before embarking on a 2-hour cruise to explore Milford from the water.

Then, you’ll head back to Queenstown via a different flight path, enjoying stunning views of Fiordland National Park.

If you’re looking for an incredibly memorable Milford Sound tour, check this one out!

Air Milford are brilliant. Very friendly and skilled staff with a strong focus on safety. The flight was one of our most memorable family holiday experiences. Paula Hogg, NZTT member.

Pro Tip: If you’re short on time, flying in and out of Milford really is the best option, as it avoids the long drive by road. These tours take four hours, while a tour departing Queenstown by road takes approximately 12 hours. If you don’t have four hours to spare, it’s possible to see Milford in just two hours on a flyover tour – check out #16 on this list.

A tourist plane flies through the mountain ranges and river formations.

11. Helicopter in from Queenstown, including a Fiord Cruise and Glacier Landing

If you’re looking to see Milford Sound from above, then this is another great option.

Soar high above Fiordland National Park for the ultimate bucket list experience, before landing on one of the fjords’ glaciers, where you’ll be able to admire the views and take endless photographs.

Continue on your journey to Milford, landing ready for a memorable cruise onboard the Southern Discoveries boat.

Throughout the day, you’ll be offered endless wildlife-watching opportunities and spectacular views. The friendly pilots will also share their extensive knowledge of the area, whilst you sit back and relax.

A helicopter is parked on top of a mountain while tourists immersed in the view of the mountain ranger and lakes.

12. Hop onboard a Helicopter from Te Anau

Departing from Te Anau, these helicopter flights are the ultimate in luxury .

Choose from their Milford Sound tour or go all-out and book the Milford Sound/Doubtful Sound combo, ticking off both of these natural attractions in one trip.

You’ll enjoy the beauty of Fiordland from the air, whilst having the maneuverability of a helicopter to really get you into those special spots.

With at least two different landings in the national park, you’ll have ample opportunity to spread your legs and snap some photos for the scrapbook. Our favourite landing spot is beside Lake Quill, located in a hanging alpine valley that feeds the incredible Sutherland Falls.

A white helicopter approaching a huge waterfalls.

13. Fly in the South Island’s Only Float Plane with Wings and Water

Wings and Water run trips from Te Anau, offering a truly unique experience.

This company operates the only float plane in Fiordland, so you’ll be able to see Milford Sound from both the air and the water, without even stepping foot on a cruise!

The tour will take you over Lake Te Anau, the Milford Track, and Sutherland Falls, before flying over Milford Sound. From up there, you’ll get impressive views of cascading waterfalls and towering glaciers.

There’s a window seat for everyone on board, and passengers will benefit from the inflight commentary too.

Run by husband and wife, Ivan and Kylie (one of which will almost certainly be your pilot), this is a great kiwi owned-and-operated company.

14. Short on Time? Join a Flyover Tour of Milford Sound from Queenstown

If you’re based in Queenstown and find yourself really short on time, but you know Milford is top of your must-do list, then a flyover tour is the most efficient way to see this incredible natural sight.

With endless panoramic views of lakes, waterfalls, razor-backed ridge lines, forested river valleys and snow-covered peaks, this really is the flight of a lifetime.

Though you won’t land in Milford Sound itself, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views throughout your time in the air. Plus, your pilot will fly through the fiord, ensuring you get a real sense of where you are.

On the way home, you’ll fly past the Sutherland Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in New Zealand .

Walking Tours of Milford

15. join a full-day milford sound hiking tour (with cruise) from te anau.

"Absolutely loved the tour and the driver was super knowledgeable. Podge gave us enough time to take pictures and didn't feel rushed at all. We had amazing weather and everything ran very smoothly and efficient. Great experience and would recommend to anyone."

"The trip to Milford Sound was an amazing experience, not only the destination, but the whole journey, with excellent commentary from our guide on the luxurious coach. Weather forecast was 10 degrees with rain, which I was worried about, but it was still awesome and beautiful, just needed warm clothes. We’re going to try your Mt Cook trip next time we come to Queenstown."

"We had the most amazing time on the cruise. The sights were breathtaking, really cool to be able to get up close to the waterfalls and learn more about the sounds. Crew member Abbey was wonderful. Super friendly and helpful to everyone on board. This was an experience never to be forgotten for sure."

"The cruise was fantastic - helped of course by the scenery and the great, sunny weather. Another plus was the boat size - small enough to feel cozy and not overcrowded with people, allowing the crew to offer a more personalised experience. This leads me to the second highlight: Abby was great, very kind and caring to our kids (7 and 4 years old) - she even brought them a colouring kit to keep them entertained during the journey, when they wanted to sit and eat something."

"We traveled with Trips and Tramps from te anau and we cannot recommend them more highly. We had a fantastic guide in Geoff who was born in manapouri and knew the area extremely well. The trip along the road, thru the homer tunnel and to the sound was well organized and run. The boat trip went in close to the magnificent cliffs of the sound and was small enough that everyone on board got great views of the waterfalls, seals and flora. The waterfalls were impressive. A great day out."

DEFINITELY book the overnight cruise. It was the highlight of our trip to New Zealand. Milford Sound is such a devastatingly beautiful place, and there is something magical about spending a quiet night on the deck of your ship, taking it all in. The cabins were cozy and surprisingly comfortable, and the whole ship leans hard into nautical explorer vibes (it's very fun and very instagrammable, if that's your thing). You get a chance to jump into the fiord too, and you better do it! If you can swim, don't miss the opportunity, it's not even that cold (and the showers are hot- you'll be fine). The food on board was better than expected, there's a bar, and you'll learn a lot of fun facts from your onboard nature guide. There is no cell service or wifi, so warn your loved ones you'll be off the grid before you drive to Milford. Lindzey “LZ” Kobiske, Via Google
I highly recommend the overnight tour staying onboard the Milford Mariner. Our coach driver, Brian, picked us up in Queenstown and dropped us back at our accommodation the following day. Brian had a fantastic attitude, he was very helpful, and shared interesting facts at various points along the way, and also accommodated great photo stops. The experience aboard the Milford Mariner was fantastic. The crew, the meals, the accommodation, and of course the spectacular scenery made this an experience we won’t forget. Thank you again to Brian, our coach driver, your great attitude was appreciated.
Booked an overnight cruise to Milford Sound and the whole experience was so memorable, from start to finish! Our driver, Brandon, was super informative and made our journey to the fiord so pleasant, telling us stories about New Zealand and Fiordland, the driving was really smooth (which for me is already a big plus seeing as the roads can be narrow and steep at times) and he is overall a really nice person. The cruise was also very well organized, the rooms were nice and clean, the activities well planned and Riley and Vivian who guided us through some of the things to do were very friendly and informative. 100% would recommend going to Milford Sound with these guys! In case you haven't found the information you were looking for, we've put together some of the most common questions our customers ask about our trips. If you need more specific answers, please contact us directly.

How long does it take to travel to Milford Sound?

If you are travelling from Queenstown it will take around 5 hours to reach Milford. Te Anau to Milford is around 2 hours 30 minutes. This timing allows for toilet and photo stops along the way. If driving, make sure you fill your vehicle with petrol in Te Anau before travelling to Milford as there are no petrol stations at Milford Sound or en route. For more details, refer to our Driving Times webpage.

At Milford where do you park and go to check in for Overnight Cruises?

What is the Milford Sound Levy?

The Milford Sound Levy is paid to the Milford Sound Tourism authority and helps to maintain, preserve and develop the Fiord. For more information, see the Milford Sound Tourism website .

Are linen and towels provided on the Milford and Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruises?

Yes, bedding and towels are provided to all guests.

Overnight Cruises and Quadshare - We are a group of three people and would like to book a shared quad-share room. Will this mean we would be sharing with another person?

Yes, you could potentially be sharing with another guest. Alternatively you could choose to pay for the entire quad cabin, or two double cabins, to ensure privacy. If you wish to pay for an entire quad cabin, please contact us directly.

Note: quad-share cabins are mixed gender.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46 - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter (June-August) 5-9 Celsius / 41 - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring (September-November) 10-19 Celsius / 50 - 66 Fahrenheit

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain. When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage. From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds. A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors. In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation.

There is limited luggage storage available at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal.

What is the difference between a double room and a twin room?

A double room is a private room for two people, with one bed to share. A twin room is a private room for two people, with two single beds.

Your travel agent or the outlet where you purchased your Milford Sound trip will refund the flight component of your ticket. You will return to Queenstown by coach.

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

milford sound tours new zealand

Our places. Our experiences. Milford and Doubtful Sounds, NZ.

The main difference between Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound is their locations in Fiordland. Milford Sound, in the northern region, is captivating with its dramatic beauty. Doubtful Sound, on the other hand, is further south, in the heart of Fiordland, and is vaster and wilder, approximately ten times larger than Milford Sound.

What are the driving conditions to Milford like in the winter?

Driving conditions during winter (May to September) can be difficult. Extreme care is needed as freezing temperatures mean the road can ice over in shaded places. During the winter it is mandatory to carry snow chains in your vehicle as the road can sometimes be covered in snow. These are available for hire from petrol stations in Te Anau and Queenstown.

If you are not confident about driving in winter conditions then take a RealNZ coach to Milford Sound so you can relax and take in the stunning scenery.

Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds. Strictly speaking, they should be called fiords.

A fiord is a glaciated valley - typically narrow and steep-sided - that has been flooded by the sea after the glacier’s retreat. A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both.

Online transactions/prices are conducted in what currency?

All prices and transactions on the RealNZ website are in New Zealand dollars (NZD). This is specified on the Terms & Conditions page.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise vessels (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator). In addition to this we also have portable defibrillators at the following locations: • Milford Sound Visitor Terminal • RealNZ Visitor Centre, Manapouri • Cavern House (Te Anau Glowworm Caves) • Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant, Walter Peak • TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship • Stewart Island Ferry (Bluff - Oban - Bluff)

Can my dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes, dietary requirements can be catered for. Please provide detailed information regarding your dietary requirements when making a booking.

Is the boat accessible for individuals with impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, all our vessel’s doorways feature a sea sill, there are no ramps within the boat, and a flight of stairs separates rooms from the main saloon.

What happens if my travel is disrupted by COVID-19?

If your travel plans are disrupted by COVID-19, our standard cancellation policy applies. To admire the seismic energy of Mother Nature without the crowds, take the ferry across Lake Ohakuri to the hidden valley of Orakei Korako geothermal park. Just as spectacular as Rotorua’s fizzing landscapes, the park’s gigantic, technicolour hot springs, geysers and mud pools are a bubbling hot soup of geothermal activity. Close to Lake Taupo, the area makes a great addition to an itinerary exploring the region’s other highlights, including Waitomo Caves and Huka Falls.

Orakei Korako, Waikato

Lake Tekapo is a sight to behold. This turquoise lake in the Southern Alps, fringed by bright pink and purple lupins between November and February each year and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, is truly picturesque. The lake gets its intense colour from glacier-grounded minerals suspended in the water. Part of a Unesco Dark Sky Reserve, turn your eyes skywards as night falls for some of the best views of space from Earth.

Part of a Unesco-listed geopark, New Zealand’s coast around North Otago is strewn with weird and wonderful geologic marvels that are well worth a stop at for a photo opp. Aptly-named for their smooth, grey humps and curves, Elephant Rocks appear like a herd of fossilised elephants grazing on the green hillsides, close to the Island Cliff-Duntroon road. The strange, weathered stones even formed the backdrop for scenes in the first The Chronicles of Narnia film.

34 of the world's most beautiful rock formations

Another of New Zealand’s most spectacular and accessible icy wonders, the 13km-long Fox Glacier slopes down from 8,530 feet (2,600m) high in the Southern Alps into the ocean, close to the Franz Josef Glacier on the country’s west coast. At Fox Glacier village, join guided tours and stay in accommodation that provides easy access to an Ice Age wilderness of frozen valleys, tunnels and caves surrounded by forest. Ambitious explorers can even arrange a heli-hike to the peak of the glacier, or take in the magnificent view from the ground at Cook Flat Road, en route to Lake Matheson.

Natural hydro-power at its most impressive, Huka Falls funnels New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato, into a steep and narrow ravine with more than 220,000 litres of icy-blue water per second roaring over the edge. Right at the top of the falls, a footbridge above the spray offers magnificent views, while walking tracks lead to great vantage points along the river. To feel the sheer force of the falls from the water, board a cruise or take a jet boat tour.

Huka Falls, Waikato

This sparkling freshwater-filled crater is New Zealand’s largest lake, measuring half the size of London and rimmed by epic scenery including stratovolcano Mount Ruapehu and Tongariro National Park. While there are boundless outdoor activities available at Taupo, kayaking to see the Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay is an absolute must. The spectacular Orakei Korako geothermal park and thundering Huka Falls are both close by too.

Lake Taupo, Waikato

The bewitching beauty of Kaitoke Regional Park’s crystalline rivers and rainforests won it a part in the Lord of the Rings films, doubling as the elvish realm of Rivendell. Its untouched verdant valleys rushing with water are a natural haven that’s easy to explore on foot via the well-worn walking tracks that snake between ancient native trees. The forest canopy is home to a number of rare birds, including endemic kaka parrots and New Zealand falcons.

Kaitoke Regional Park, Greater Wellington

These huge, bulbous anomalies scattering the sand of Koekohe Beach, between the towns of Moeraki and Hampden, add a different dimension to South Island’s scenic North Otago coast. Appearing like giant cannonballs up to 6.5 feet (2m) high, the geologic wonders look as though they were carved by human hands, but in fact they are made of calcified rock concreted together 65 million years ago and slowly released from the soft seabed by coastal erosion. Similar Koutu Boulders can be found around Hokianga Harbour on North Island.

Similar Koutu Boulders can be found around Hokianga Harbour on North Island.

No list of New Zealand’s natural wonders would be complete without mentioning the country’s tallest mountain, Mount Cook, also commonly called Aoraki. A pure alpine wilderness of snow fields, glaciers and vanishing peaks more than 9,840 feet (3,000m) high make up Mount Cook, which is surprisingly accessible to visitors. Walking trails fan out from the village, including a one-hour hike to view the spectacular Tasman Glacier. You may even encounter cheeky kea (mountain parrots) along the way.

The iconic Ninety Mile Beach at the far northern tip of North Island is a wide band of seemingly endless golden sand, which, contrary to its name, is in fact 55 miles (89km) long. The beach is used as an official road at low tide, with buses offering tours along the beach. Boasting one of the best left-hand surf breaks in the world, the beach is a haven for surfers, while beach activities also include bodyboarding down the sand dunes. The native Pohutukawa tree, also known as New Zealand’s Christmas Tree, is a unique natural feature common in the north of North Island but found all across the country. The wide-canopied trees burst into a profusion of scarlet blossoms every December around Christmas time, and have become synonymous with the festive period. The hardy evergreen is notable for growing in inhospitable spots too, clinging to cliffsides or transforming barren lava fields into a garden of life.

This stunning natural attraction at Dolomite Point near the village of Punakaiki on the South Island’s West Coast offers elemental entertainment at its best. Part of Paparoa National Park, named for its flat-packed layers of rock that look like stacks of giant pancakes teetering over the frothing ocean, the geology itself is awe-inspiring. But the power of its air and water vents, exploding suddenly into the sky, offers all the thrill of a fireworks display.

The Rotorua area is jam-packed with geologic marvels, but Pohutu Geyser towers above the rest – suddenly erupting boiling water 98 feet (30m) into the air at least once every hour to the delight of onlookers. The largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere, Pohutu is part of Te Puia’s Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, full of bubbling pools and coursing elemental energy. Look out for the nearby Prince of Wales Feathers geyser, which always shoots water just before its bigger neighbour erupts.

In Lake Matheson, nature has created a perfect mirror of South Island’s immense ancient forests and towering Southern Alps that form the island’s backbone. Also known as Reflection Lake, its serene, dark waters are a looking glass for two of New Zealand’s mightiest peaks – Mount Cook (Aoraki) and Mount Tasman – positioned just to the east. The lake was made when nearby Fox Glacier retreated and makes for an ideal stop on an itinerary mapping southern New Zealand’s natural wonders.

A lost world flanked by mountains and carved out by glaciers in Fiordland National Park, Sinbad Gully’s rivers and forests lay hidden for centuries. Hemmed in by the famous Mitre Peak on one side and Llawrenny Peaks on the other, the gully opens out into the jaw-dropping fiords of Milford Sound. Cut off from the world, nature has gone her own way here, creating strange species found nowhere else. The gully was the last mainland stronghold for the critically endangered Kakapo (pictured), a huge, cuddly, flightless parrot now only found on Codfish Island.

Fiordland National Park is one of the world’s largest protected areas, covering more than 5,000 square miles of pristine wilderness and harbouring more than just a few spectacular sights. They include Sutherland Falls – the country’s highest waterfall – overflowing down steep cliffs from a lake more than half a kilometre above the valley floor. There are two ways to see the falls up-close – hiking the renowned Milford Track or taking a scenic flight from nearby hubs such as Milford and Te Anau.

Penguins are the chief inhabitants of the wild and untamed sub-Antarctic Snares, part of a protected World Heritage area that’s the last frontier between South Island and Antarctica. Here, yellow-eyed penguins run tracks through pristine forests and line the steep seaside cliffs alongside seals and seabirds. The remote, uninhabited islands are reachable by expedition cruises that take in the other islands and wildlife.

This primordial world of towering ancient trees on the northern tip of New Zealand is the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland. It's home to Tane Mahuta – the Lord of the Forest – a 2,000-year-old sacred kauri tree that measures 14 feet (4.4m) around its trunk and almost 59 feet (18m) up to its first branch. That's young compared to another giant kauri tree found here: Te Matua Ngahere, meaning Father of the Forest, is estimated to be between 2,500 and 3,000 years old.

The epicentre of New Zealand’s volcanic wonders, Tongariro was the country’s first national park and won Unesco World Heritage status several decades ago. Crowned by three mighty volcanoes – Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, which are part of the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire – the park encompasses a phenomenal landscape of craters, old lava flows, strange emerald lakes and steaming vents. New Zealand’s best day hike – the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – takes travellers to the highlights.

Tongariro National Park, Manawatu-Whanganui

Hidden among bucolic country gardens in the little hamlet of Ohaupo on New Zealand's North Island is a natural chapel formed from entwined trees guided by human hands. This living, breathing church is a monument to nature surrounded by mature oak and maple trees. It is open to visitors and can even host weddings of up to 100 people. The surrounding gardens include a hedge labyrinth and Monet-inspired pond.

New Zealand’s most active cone volcano, the imposing White Island (also known as Whakaari) forms part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and sits 30 miles (48km) offshore from North Island’s east coast. A sudden, explosive eruption in 2019 effectively ended guided tours to the island, but scenic flights over its steaming crater, sulphurous vents and acid lakes are still available, taking off from nearby Whakatane, Rotorua or Tauranga.

White Island, Bay of Plenty

Picture-perfect Bridal Veil Falls is ensconced in a region of the North Island known for its natural attractions, including the must-see Waitomo Caves. A classic beauty dropping 180 feet (55m) over a hard volcanic lip into a deep pool framed by lush greenery, the falls are the perfect place to immerse in nature, with walkways leading through the forest and along the Pakoka River to viewing points at its top and base.
