inflatable sup travel bag

The SUP-Now bag offers three different ways to carry your board. First, like all bags, you are able to use it as a backpack. Second, you are able to roll the bag by using the top extra padded handle. Third, you are to use the extra padded side handle when you want to switch things up a bit.

Side and Front Pockets as well as Tangle Free Straps

inflatable sup travel bag

Some people prefer to have their paddle in the main compartment with their board. Others like to keep their adjustable paddle in the side pocket. Who are we to tell you which way to carry your paddle? We decided to give you both options. This side pocket is also a great place to keep easily accessible water bottles or snacks.

inflatable sup travel bag

The large front pocket comes in handy for storing, well basically anything. The front pocket can fit a small towel, water bottle, sunscreen or whatever else you keep on you.

inflatable sup travel bag

When you are not using the bag as a backpack, we made it super easy to tuck the straps completely out of the way. No more strappings dragging across the ground and not only getting dirty, but also stuck on everything.

The 10 Best Stand Up Paddle Board Bags of 2024

January 11, 2022 11 min read

Updated on: January 11, 2024

Best SUP Bags

GILI SUP bag near komodo iSUP

If you’ve just purchased your first or a new stand up paddle board, there are a few things you need to consider before deciding on what SUP board bag is best for you.

Inflatable board bags come in a backpack or small duffel bag form because the board can be deflated and rolled up.

Traditional SUP board bags, on the other hand, are similar to surfboard bags and fit the entire length of your board.

How to Choose a SUP Board Bag

Transportation.

GILI SUP bag near a car

Transportation plays a huge part in deciding which board bag is right for you.

If you have an inflatable board, you’ll most likely be choosing between a backpack or a duffel bag.

If you’re planning to only visit bodies of water that are close to where you can park your vehicle, a duffel bag may be sufficient for you. However, if you’d prefer to explore remote locations where a trek is involved, a comfortable backpack with padded straps would be a better option.

Similar to inflatable SUP bags, traditional board bags should follow the same rule. If you’re going to be carrying your board over a longer distance, you’ll want to invest in a bag with a comfortable padded shoulder strap that is easy to carry as you walk. If you can park your car close to the water’s edge, a comfortable strap may not be needed.

Paddle boards come in many shapes and sizes, as do board bags. Getting a bag that is big enough for your board may seem like common sense, but is a regular mistake people make when purchasing a bag for the first time.

Flat water boards, for example, are wider than touring boards, and therefore would need a wider bag.

Your bag needs to comfortably fit over your board and not be strained while you try to zip it up. You know when you’ve packed too much into your suitcase, and you’re sat on top desperately trying to get the zip to go around? That’s exactly what you don’t want with your board bag.

Always buy a bag that is the same size or slightly bigger than your board’s length. If the bag is too big, the board could slide around and get damaged and if it’s too small, it won’t be fully protected.

Pockets can be useful in your bag to store things like your leash or fins.

Inflatable SUP bags may also have a pocket to store your pump , therefore eliminating the need to carry an extra bag or backpack.

Fin Accommodation

GILI iSUP bag with fin pockets

Some SUP board bags can accommodate fins, meaning they don’t need to be removed after every use.

Take into consideration if you have a large single fin or multiple smaller ones, so when it comes time to purchase a bag, you can buy one with a sufficient fin slot.

Inflatable boards, however, have removable fins that can be put into the transport bag and transported alongside the deflated board.

Heat Protection

Paddle boards can be hugely affected by the sun and shouldn’t be left in it for long periods.

SUP board bags are constructed with heat-resistant materials and air vents to help prevent heat damage to the board.

The color of the bag also makes a difference in how well your board will be protected. Many bags come in a shiny silver color because it is the best choice for heat protection. The shiny silver reflects the heat and keeps your board cool.

If you’d prefer a bag that isn’t silver, a light-colored option will do a better job of keeping your bag cool compared to a darker color.

Air vents are also an important factor to think about. Vents allow airflow in the bag, meaning humidity won’t build up and damage the board or create mold.

Foam Protection

The foam lining of your bag is what will protect your board from any dings that may occur during transportation or storage.

Highly protective bags typically have 10mm of protective foam core on both sides that completely enclose your board.

Having this much foam protection, however, does add extra weight, so it’s important to keep that in mind if you want to carry your board over long distances.

Bags with less foam weigh less and tend to be a cheaper option, so when deciding what bag to get, weigh up the cost, weight, and protection level.

As a rule, you should purchase a board bag that is the length or slightly bigger than your stand up paddle board.

Having a bag too small means your board won’t be properly protected and you could run the risk of breaking your board bag when trying to zip it up. A bag too big will mean your stand up paddle board can move around and get damaged in transportation.

Some bags are made from heat reflective materials and feature multiple integral air vents to prevent heat from building up inside.

You can leave your SUP board in its bag at the beach as long as it’s out of direct sunlight.

If left in the sun, heat can build up inside the bag and cause damage to your board. The best thing to do is put the bag in the shade and leave it open to allow proper ventilation.

8 Best Stand UP Paddle Travel Board Bags

Best sup board bags for traveling.

As the surf board’s cousin, the paddleboard burst onto the scene in more recent years. Today, paddleboarding is one of the most popular water sports.

As fun as paddleboarding is, the downside to the sport is having to carry and transport a large standup paddleboard.

What are the Best SUP Board Bags?

SUPs come in various lengths, but general-purpose SUPs max out at 11 feet. They are difficult for most people to carry without a carrying bag. And without sufficient protection, paddleboards can get damaged when transporting or storing them.

Fortunately, today’s paddleboard carrying bags are loaded with features that protect your board, enable comfortable carrying of it and provide many extra features that allow you to fully enjoy your time at the beach. We’ve selected five bags that we think you may want to consider.

#1.  Surfica All-Rounder SUP Board Bag

surfica board bag

  • Comes in a wide range of sizes
  • Thick 8mm closed-cell padding
  • Tough outer skin
  • Polyester binding
  • Nose hanger

The Surfica All-Rounder SUP Bag is made to protect your board during transport or while storing it. With this bag’s protective features and built-in durability, it may be the last SUP carrying bag you’ll ever buy. You’ll especially appreciate this carry bag’s tough outer (Tarplin) skin and thick 8mm closed-cell padding if you often travel with your paddleboard. The bag’s polyester binding provides reinforcement and another layer of protection. The Sufica All-Rounder SUP Bag also features a high-density YKK coil nylon zipper that can withstand rough treatment, including your SUPs heavy weight when you hang your board up from the bag’s nose hanger. And you can rest assured that salt water won’t corrode a nylon zipper. Padded carrying handles ensure that you can comfortably carry your board. Alternatively, you can use the bag’s detachable shoulder strap. With a color scheme of a simple grey on black, this bag comes in many sizes. Although the Surfica All-Rounder SUP Bag is loaded with great features, it does not have air vents to keep your paddleboard cool and dry. It also does not include fin slots.

Pros of this bag

  • Lives up to the name of being a great "all around" board bag

Cons of this bag

  • No air vents
  • No fin slot

#2.  Isle Paddle Board Bag

isle paddleboard bag

  • Corrosion-resistant zipper
  • Internal storage compartment
  • External paddle straps
  • Ergonomic carry handle
  • Heat-resistant bottom material

You’ll love the fine details that are built into this SUP day bag. This bag features both nose and tail reinforcement to protect your board from dings and dents. Heat-resistant material on the bottom keeps the bottom cool, while its 5mm water-resistant closed-cell padding keeps your board dry. A corrosion-resistant zipper keeps the bag closed. Unfortunately, a manufacturing problem currently prevents the use of the Velcro fin slot. You can strap your paddles onto the bag’s outside using the external paddle straps and store your accessories in the internal storage compartment. Use or remove the bag’s non-slip shoulder strap. The ergonomic carry handle makes carrying this bag more comfortable.

  • Extra nose and tail reinforcement
  • 5mm water-resistant closed-cell padding
  • Several sizes are available
  • No air vent

#3.  Prolite Session SUP Bag

prolite sup travel bag

  • External paddle pocket, strap pocket & inner storage pocket
  • Padded strap and 4 padded handles
  • Reinforced nose with top zip flip opening
  • 420 Denier reflective nylon

The Prolite Session SUP bag is absolutely loaded with features. You’ll love using the external paddle pocket. You’ll also enjoy using this bag’s wax/key pocket, inner storage pocket and the strap pocket that stores the strap and your accessories during travel. This snugly-fitted bag is 36 inches wide and suits boards up to 32 inches wide. Red flags give an oversize warning. The reinforced nose includes a top-zip flip opening for inserting your board from the top. Protective rail guards prevent the molded non-corrosive zippers from damaging your paddleboard. The bag’s 5mm-thick padding protects your board during transit. It has a padded strap and four padded handles that provide comfort as you bag, carry and unbag your paddleboard. Its 420 Denier heat-reflective nylon outer covering and closable air vent help to keep your paddleboard cool and dry. Use the hang tag to hang up your board at the end of the day.

  • Snug fit and red flags for oversize warning
  • Non-corrosive zippers with protective rail guards
  • Closable air vent

#4.  Surfica Flatwater SUP Bag

surfica flatwater bag

  • Fits most flatwater SUPs
  • Tapered outline
  • Tough protective Tarplin skin
  • 8mm closed-cell padding
  • Available in 3 sizes: 10 ft, 11 ft, 12 ft.

The Surfica Flatwater SUP bag offers several outstanding features. Its tough Tarplin skin, thick 8mm closed-cell foam padding and reinforced polyester binding will protect your paddleboard during even the roughest road trips. With these protections, you can also confidently store your paddleboard away in this bag during off seasons, knowing your board will be ready to use in the summertime. The only drawback regarding storage is the absence of an air vent. You can use the nose hanger to keep it up off the ground. The bag’s dual padded carrying handles make carrying your board more comfortable. The high-density YKK coil zippers are made with a durable nylon that can take abuse and stress. The Surfica Flatwater SUP Bag should serve you well for many years. This carrying bag has grey on black styling and is available in several sizes. Its tapered outline makes it the perfect bag for boards that are sized within the Adventure Paddleboarding Explorer range. It does not feature fin slots, though.

  • Padded carry handles and overall just an easy to use board bag

#5.  SurfStow SUP Travel Board Bag

surfstow sup bag

  • N on-corrosive zipper
  • L lightweight & heavily padded
  • Exterior pocket for paddle
  • Interior pockets that drain water

This bag can handle boards up to 14” long and 34” wide. The SurfStow Board Bag is easy to use with the zipper going around 70 percent of the bag so it opens wide and you can easily slide your board in.

The SurfStow Board Bag is built for abuse with study zippers, heavy materials, and a thick padding layer. If you’re traveling with your bag, this is the ultimate in protection against the abuses of airports.

There are multiple straps and handles that make strapping this bag to your car or traveling through airport terminals with the padded shoulder strap, easy.

The quality of the materials and the build toughness you get with the SurfStow Board Bag is comparable to that of similar bag that cost twice as much. This is probably the best value around.

  • Great value

#6.  Abahub Premium Padded SUP Travel Bag

inflatable sup travel bag

  • 8mm Foam Padded Core
  • Available in different sizes & widths
  • 4 x 4″ air vents for heat protection
  • Inside pocket for fin storage
  • 1.5″ wide neoprene padded adjustable shoulder strap

The Abahub has a thoughtful design with a water resistant PE shell and extra reinforced fabric at the tip and tail making this stout board bag. There are 8 different tie down straps for making adjustments and for ease with strapping to a car’s roof rack.

The 2 foot wide neoprene shoulder strap makes comfortable to carry your board through the airport.

There is an exterior pocket for the paddle and Velcro straps to secure it in place. That’s my only gripe with this bag. I’d like for the paddle storage to be internal, so it can be protected with the rest of the board by the beefy layer of 8mm foam padding.

This is a good bag and a solid value. It can hold paddleboard but it’s not limited to that as you can also use this for surfboards as well.

This bag comes in a ton of different sizes, so make sure that you pick the size that works best for you board.

#7.  Curve SUP Stand Up Paddleboard Travel Bag

curve sup bag

  • 10mm foam padding
  • W ater-resistant polycanvas base
  • C omes in many different sizes
  • Integrated paddle holder and blade cover

The Curve SUP bag is a specialty travel bag that earns its reputation as a heavy weight. With 10mm of foam padding it has some of the thickest padding on the market. This is the ideal bag for travel with it’s a road trip to the beach or an airplane flight to the Keys.

There are a lot of different sizes to choose from with this bag having you covered from 9’ up 14’ SUP board bags.

This has probably the best paddle holder of any travel bag because the paddle is built into the bag and has added padding protection for the blade. Simply the best paddle holder out there.

There is a non slip adjustable and shoulder strap and extra handles all over the bag for ease of carrying.

The attention to detail, from the vent air vents for cooling your board, to premium buckles and zippers, make this one of the best travel bags on the market.

#8. Isle Touring Day Bag

isle touring board bag

  • Velcro fin slot

You’ll appreciate the protection provided by this bag’s nose and tail reinforcement in addition to its 5mm water-resistant closed-cell padding. Besides the durable outer material, we’ve added a layer of heat-resistant/reflective 266PE material to protect your board from the sun and other heat sources.

The corrosion-resistant zipper allows you to subject the bag to salt water without worry. Unlike most SUP carrying bags, this one includes a Velcro fin slot for non-removable fins. You can store accessories in the internal storage compartment. For your carrying convenience, this bag includes external paddle straps, an ergonomic carry handle and a removable non-slip shoulder strap.

Final Thoughts

Your SUP needs a carrying bag that protects it from damage during transit and while it’s in storage.

We’ve shown you how several popular paddleboard bags address your need for adequate foam padding and reinforcement, heat protection, fin accommodation and extras like comfortable handles and handy pockets.

For every board Starboard plants 3 mangrove trees with Worldview International Foundation.

Each tree absorbs 673kg of CO2 during its first 25 years.

50% of absorption goes towards offsetting this board & 50% is secured as carbon credits to fund livelihood projects in Myanmar.

The average emission from a Starboard board is 100 kg CO2.

By planting 3 trees per board we offset this 10 x over.

inflatable sup travel bag

1.4 kg of trash is collected per board by starboard pop crews at beaches in Thailand & Myanmar.

Globally, an individual is responsible for 1.4 kg of plastic reaching the ocean every year.

Starboard balances this amount for our customers.

The 7 Best Inflatable Standup Paddleboards Combine Capability and Portability

Boards that can span 10-plus feet yet pack down to the size of a small suitcase.

Inflatable SUPs in their earlier adaptations had a reputation for being a flimsier version of a hard board (think floating air mattress), but today’s higher-end inflatable paddleboards rival the performance of hard boards. Budget-friendly inflatable SUPs offer just as much fun for a third of the price (and space) of a hard board.

So whether you’re seeking serenity on calm water or chasing thrills on the open ocean, you can do so with a paddle in hand. Go fast and far with a touring board or do some downward dogs with your four-legged friend on a stable, beginner-friendly board.

Best Inflatable Standup Paddleboards

  • Best Overall SUP: BOTE HD Aero
  • Best Budget SUP: ROC Paddle Board
  • Most Portable SUP: iROCKER All-Around Ultra
  • Best Stability SUP: RETROSPEC Weekender Plus
  • Best for Beginners SUP: BOTE WULF Aero
The Expert: With two decades of standup paddling experience, I’ve paddled throughout the South Pacific along coastlines in Fiji, French Polynesia, and Hawaii, as well as Australia and California. My grandparents used to paddle competitively, and my grandfather carves custom paddles professionally. Whenever I pick up a paddle in their presence, I am coached extensively. My love of the ocean inspired me to create The Salt Sirens , a website dedicated to ocean sports, and I am a guidebook author for Moon Travel Guides. My writing has appeared in outlets like The Standup Journal, Travel + Leisure , AFAR , Vice , Lonely Planet and more.

What to Look For in an Inflatable SUP

While there are some great all-around boards, inflatable SUPs have become increasingly specialized for activities like fishing , surfing, and touring. First think about how you’ll use your board—casual flat-water cruising, fishing , camping , or catching waves.

More Cool Stuff To Consider: Best Inflatable Kayaks • Best Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers • Best Flippers to Dive, Snorkel and Swim • Best Backpack Coolers

Perhaps most important for inflatable standup paddleboards is length, since it has the greatest bearing on overall performance. Generally, the longer a board is, the better it glides and the greater its capacity to carry heavy loads. Touring boards and those for fishing are longer. In fact, long-distance racers will often ride boards 14 feet or longer; SUPs for surfers (and for kids) are shorter, as these boards tend to be more agile. Many surfers use boards that measure just 7.5 feet. For most recreational paddlers, lengths should fall between 10 and 12 feet.

Don’t forget to double check the weight capacity. Is it just for you or will there also be camping or fishing gear, or maybe even a dog or cooler along for the ride?

Boards are often designed for different activities—tackling whitewater, fishing, practicing yoga, or leisurely touring. This is most evident in the shape of the board. Standup paddleboards meant for touring tend to be long and narrow, allowing them to paddle fast and straight. Paddleboards meant for yoga, beginner paddlers, or general use tend to be wide with a round nose, prioritizing stability.

If a standup paddleboard is too heavy for you to carry and launch, it’s likely to collect dust in a corner. Choose a paddleboard that’s manageable to carry, but note that lighter boards can often be made from less durable materials. Lighter boards will often have a single-layer PVC outer shell with a linear drop stitch inside to give the board its firmness. Heavier and more durable boards might have layered PVC, welded seams, and a more complex system to make them stiffer.

Portability

One of the best things about inflatable SUPs is their portability. If it’s just a short hike from your car to the water, weight may not be a big factor. But if you have a long haul to get to the water or if you will be traveling with your board, that may change the equation. Most inflatable SUPs come with a backpack for easy transport, and some carriers even have wheels.

Paddleboard Accessories

The standup paddleboard itself is only part of the sport. Many inflatable standup paddleboards come with accessories like a paddle, fin(s), pump, and leash. The paddle is essential, and you’ll want one that’s adjustable by length if multiple people will be using the board. Note that paddle length is determined by the paddler’s height. You'll want to be sure your fin or fin system is compatible to your board, and that you have a leash to tether you to the board.

Invest in a high-quality personal flotation device, like a life jacket or inflatable belt-pouch, for safety. The Unites States Coast Guard requires paddlers to wear one when venturing outside of surfing, swimming, and bathing areas.

Most inflatable standup paddleboards come with a hand pump to inflate the board. If you’re short on time and would rather spend your energy paddling instead of pumping, there are electric pumps (figure about $1oo-$150) that cut down the effort it takes to inflate your board.

How We Evaluated Inflatable SUPS

inflating a standup paddleboard

To find the best inflatable SUPs, I relied on my personal experience using inflatable SUPs that are featured in this roundup, as well as many that ultimately did not make the cut. I tested boards in a variety of water conditions and got feedback from other paddlers who had different paddling preferences and abilities from mine.

With the surge of new inflatable SUP brands on the market, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing any main contenders. I combed through reviews on consumer websites and paddling forums. Resources like Paddling Magazine and Session Magazine helped me find brands I might not have considered.

The number one thing I look for in a paddleboard is its performance followed by value for money, durability, and intended purpose. Added features like storage and carrying systems also played into consideration. I did not feature boards that seemed as cumbersome as a hard board, as that defeats the purpose of an inflatable.

BOTE HD Aero

HD Aero

The BOTE HD Aero is my ‘Best Overall’ for three main reasons: versatility, sturdiness, and maneuverability. It’s stable enough for beginners and agile enough to grow into, making it a worthwhile investment if you want a one SUP quiver.

It’s great for a quick workout on calm water yet it can also handle longer distances. As for the details? I love the use of ample bungee storage space at the nose and tail, the non-slip deck, and paddle strap to tuck the paddle away.

The package includes a hand pump, fins, leash, travel bag, and three-piece paddle. BOTE also sells a range of compatible accessories for the board like a trolley rack, cooler, and hands-free carry system.

ROC Paddle Board

Paddle Board

The ROC Paddle Board is ideal for paddlers who want to dip their toes into the sport without making too splashy an investment. Fun for calm conditions, this board is easy to inflate, lightweight, paddles well, and is surprisingly stable.

Though you won’t gain much speed on the ROC Paddle Board, it’s a fun cruiser. In fact, this SUP would be the ideal fit for families going on a vacation and who want a one-size-fits-most board to share around.

The board comes with a paddle, hand pump, leash, carrying bag, fin system, and small dry bag that can clip to the bungee storage areas. If you plan to store this board fully inflated, I recommend releasing a little air before stowing it away to increase its longevity, as the seams might stretch and leak over time.

iROCKER All-Around Ultra

All-Around Ultra

There’s an arms race among the paddleboard companies to see which board can be the lightest and most compact. For iRocker, its take on this challenge is the All-Around Ultra model, a 10-foot board that packs down into a small backpack. The board itself weighs a touch under 20 pounds.

Despite its lightweight construction, the All-Around Ultra is stable and tracks straight. Its two-fin system makes turning a little slow, however.

You’ll find bungee storage at the nose and tail, and three carrying handles. The board comes with an electric pump, a five-piece paddle, fins, a leash, and a bag. The larger 10-foot model is best for petite paddlers who are 5-feet 5-inches and shorter. Taller paddlers should opt for the 11’0” All-Around Ultra .

Retrospec Weekender Plus

Weekender Plus

The Retrospec Weekender has evolved over the past few years, and my favorite version is the Retrospec Weekender Plus. At 36 inches wide, it has a base that’s stable enough to handle a bit of chop but still steers smoothly. Suitable for rides in various conditions, plus accurate steering, make this an ideal board for both beginners and experts.

The SUP comes with a kayak seat conversion that’s quick to set up when your legs start wobbling or if you simply want a change in perspective. Features like two bungee storage areas at the nose and tail, an easy installation fin system, and nonslip deck make this board an all-arounder.

The package comes with a carrying backpack, pump, paddle, leash, three fins, repair kit, and a waterproof phone case. An action camera mount at the nose is a convenient touch for shutterbugs.

For the next Retrospec Weekender iteration, I hope to see the storage bungee cables stretched across the whole deck to give it a bit more stowage capacity, but that's a minor quibble.

BOTE WULF Aero

WULF Aero

If you’re new to paddleboarding (or want a board that’s reliable in calm conditions), opt for a SUP that’s easy to maneuver but stable enough to give you a solid base as you find your balance.

The BOTE WULF Aero is a top pick thanks to its shape and durability. Its mid-section is 33 inches wide, so it’s easy to get on, stand up, and stay on.

A magnetic water bottle holder near your feet makes it effortless to reach down and rehydrate—you won’t have to worry about tiptoeing to the bungee storage section by the nose.

The BOTE WULF Aero comes with a repair kit, carrying case, fin, adjustable paddle, and leash. The only true hindrance from this being an out-of-the-bag beginner SUP is that the pump is sold separately.

Bluefin SUP Cruise Carbon

Cruise Carbon

Many intermediate and experienced paddlers will cite rigidity as their top gripe with inflatable paddleboards. It’s a challenge for an inflatable to replicate a fiberglass or epoxy board feel. The Bluefin Cruise Carbon, however, comes close.

Dual inflation chambers, carbon-reinforced rails, and its shape make it sturdier and more agile than many of its inflatable counterparts. You won’t feel the signature bounce and wiggle of an inflatable SUP as the Bluefin Cruise Carbon easily glides over chop. A comfortable neoprene seat easily clips into the board, converting it into a kayak.

The board also features two bungee storage areas, three carrying handles, action camera mounts and a non-slip deck pad. The package includes a travel bag, leash, dual-action pump for easy pumping, paddle, and seat.

Red Paddle Co. Voyager

Voyager

The Red Paddle Co Voyager’s price tag teeters on the edge of a comparable hard board, but you have portability that you might not find with its hard board counterpart.

The Voyager is ideal for long days or distances out on the water. Its V-shaped hull with twin fins helps the board move fast, track straight, and handle choppy conditions. The extended nose maximizes stability for both newbies and advanced paddlers alike.

On deck, you’ll find three carrying handles, D-rings, and a bungee storage area at the nose. The package comes with a wheeled carrying bag, pump, fin, and battens. The paddle must be purchased separately .

Why the Right Paddle Makes a Big Difference, Where to Take Your SUP, and Why Go for an Inflatable. Expert Chantae Reden Has the Answers.

What are the main benefits of an inflatable SUP over a hard board?

Inflatable SUPS are typically more affordable than similarly shaped hard boards built from fiberglass or epoxy. Because inflatable SUPS are packable, they’re also more portable and lightweight than hard boards.

If you’re a beginner paddler who isn’t sure if a performance hard board is worth the investment, purchasing an inflatable SUP is often a wise choice to learn the basics of paddling and whether it suits your lifestyle.

Where can I paddleboard?

Most bodies of water that are open to recreational water sports are ideal places to paddleboard. If you’re just starting out, go to your local lake or river where waters are calm.

If you live near the ocean, start in flat water lagoons or bays before moving to areas where you could encounter currents and waves. It’s also best to paddleboard while the wind is blowing onshore, so you’ll drift back to land in case of an emergency.

Because standup paddleboarding is still a growing sport, it’s wise to see where local kayakers are heading—many times, conditions that work well for calm water kayaking are suitable for paddleboarding as well.

Is it true that a good paddle is just as important as a good board?

Having a good board is more important than having a good paddle, but only slightly. Without a suitable paddle, you’re unlikely to get very far no matter what board you’re on.

A good paddle doesn’t have to necessarily be expensive or made from high-end materials like carbon fiber. As a rule, you’ll want one that’s tailored to your height (roughly 4 inches taller than you are), lightweight, and comfortable to hold.

Paddle boarding is one of the best ways to get outside and enjoy a lake, river, or ocean. Since some boats and traditional wood paddle boards are less portable due to their bulky nature, an inflatable paddle board is the perfect solution whether you’re traveling by foot, car, or airplane.

We tested 24 inflatable paddle boards to find the best ones that make it easy and hassle-free to get out on the water. From calm lake waters to swift river currents, we traveled both long and short distances to bodies of water and paddled for hours to judge the portability, performance, and quality of each paddle board. Ultralightweight, well-made boards that proved to have excellent stability for beginner to advanced paddle-boarders made it to the top of the list. We found other great options for families, as well as hybrid and budget picks, too.

Best Overall

Serenelife stand-up paddle board.

It has superb stability and portability for beginners, intermediate, or advanced paddlers.

We wish the carrying case was slightly bigger.

SereneLife’s stand-up paddle board comes with everything you need to start paddle boarding on a lake, river, or ocean, whether you’re new to the water sport or a seasoned paddler. It makes for a great gift option for the outdoorsmen in your life. The board is 10.5 feet long, and it includes an ankle leash, an adjustable aluminum paddle, one plastic fin, a manual air pump, a repair kit, and a nylon carrying bag. While it took about 10 minutes to inflate the paddle board, once it was ready to go, we were thoroughly impressed with how lightweight and easy it was to carry nearly a half mile down a dirt trail to get to the river. It weighs a mere 13.9 pounds, making it the lightest board we tested, and it proved to have superior portability. Despite its lightweight build, the PVC material has noticeably sturdy drop-stitch seams, and it’s clear how durable the board is after we used it during a four-day river camping trip . The PVC material sustained a few scuffs after over a dozen trips to the river and lake, but overall, it had no issues being left in the dirt, contending with gravel, or going over rocks in a river.

Beginner and advanced paddlers alike tried the board and were shocked by how stable it felt. Even with an angsty dog running around the board and falling in the water several times, we never lost our footing or felt unstable. While we truly love this paddle board, the only inconvenience we found is that the carrying bag is slightly smaller than we liked, so it’s a tight fit to get everything in. It’s not super difficult, but we recommend rolling up the deflated board as tightly as you can for an optimal fit.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Roc inflatable stand up paddleboard pack.

The board comes with plenty of accessories and a kayak paddle for versatility.

It was slightly difficult to fit the board and accessories into the carrying case.

No matter your experience level, the ROC Inflatable Stand-up Paddle Board is one of your best options thanks to all of the included accessories for the price. The paddle board has several stand-out features like the inclusion of a dry bag for keeping your phone or keys safe on the water , and there are bungee straps on either end of the board to secure life jackets and towels. If you’re more comfortable sitting instead of standing, the adjustable paddle can be converted into a kayak paddle to make it easier to maneuver the board — an ideal feature for beginners that are still getting the hang of standing up. With a 32-inch width and 6-inch loft, the paddle board offers an abundance of stability, and we liked that it was easy to catch speed while gliding through the water.

Similar to our top pick, the only downside is that it was slightly difficult to fit the deflated paddle board and accessories into the carrying bag. It took a little jostling to get everything in and not bulge out of the bag, but once we secured everything, the case was comfortable to carry and the contents felt lightweight enough to transport without any complaints. The PVC material feels durable and well-made, leading us to believe that this board won’t damage easily with prolonged use.

Best Budget

Funwater stand-up paddle board.

It was exceptionally lightweight both to carry inflated and in the carrying bag.

Setting up the board was a little tricky to get the hang of, but it was easier after the first time.

Budget-friendly shoppers won’t have to sacrifice price for quality with the durable and sturdy FunWater Stand-up Paddle Board. Like other paddle boards we tested, this one is also made with multi-layered PVC and has a leak-proof air valve that can support 12 to 15 PSI to make the board stable while riding on it. It took around three minutes to inflate the board with the manual pump included, and although it was slightly difficult to read the pressure gauge, we felt like we were still able to get the board inflated enough to be sufficiently sturdy. There was a slight learning curve with placing the fin on the bottom, but after we did it once, it was much easier moving forward. The board provides plenty of stability and it maneuvers decently, and we particularly loved how easy it was to carry either inflated or in the carrying bag. For less than the market average, we think this is a solid pick for beginner or intermediate paddle boarders.

Best Stability

Atoll stand up paddle board.

The board felt exceptionally stable in calm and choppy waters.

It took nine minutes to manually pump up the board.

One of the longest paddle boards we tested, the Atoll 11-foot Inflatable Stand-up Paddle Board has ideal stability for paddling long distances or doing yoga on the board. We were thoroughly impressed. It also felt easy to get back on the board even if you're in the middle of the water. We used this paddle board in still water, and when the weather conditions were windy, the board remained stable. While longer paddle boards can sometimes be difficult to maneuver, that wasn’t the case with this one. We had no issues controlling the direction of the board or turning with the paddle. We liked how the Atoll board was fairly easy to transport around, but we wish there were handles on either end so two people could easily carry it if needed. Still, the carrying bag was comfortable to use thanks to its padded shoulder straps, and the board as well as the accessories can fit into it without any issues.

Best Splurge

Hala gear straight-up inflatable sup kit.

This paddle board was exceptionally easy to paddle around and felt well-built with high-quality materials and stitching.

It’s the most expensive option on our list.

Made out of durable PVC material with glued and welded seams, the Hala Gear Straight-up Inflatable stand-up paddle board convinced us it will last for a longtime, even with consistent use. The high-quality materials and standard 10-foot length made this paddle board truly a gem to paddle on both still water and in swift river waters. The board thoroughly impressed us by gracefully gliding through the different water conditions and turning effortlessly with the adjustable carbon paddle included. And when you’re done paddling, the rolling backpack is spacious enough to fit the deflated paddle board and is comfortable to wear as a backpack or roll on the two wheels. We especially liked that the manual pump has single and double inflation settings to speed up the assembly process. While this paddle board is pricier than other options, the premium features included make it well worth the cost for outdoor enthusiasts with a higher budget.

Best Design

Isle stand-up paddle board.

The board has a timeless nautical aesthetic and includes thoughtful accessories.

It weighs 24 pounds, and the heftiness was slightly noticeable during testing.

We love the simple designs on the Isle Pioneer 2.0 paddle boards boasting earth-toned colors or a subtle palm tree leaves pattern. Besides having superior style, the paddle board impressed us by being incredibly easy to set up and deflate. It’s easy to unpack, inflate, and get on the water, and we love the oversized bag where you can easily fit the board, pump, and accessories with no problem. Once you’re out on the water, the board has exceptional maneuverability and plenty of stability, especially in choppy waters, thanks to its sturdy 6-inch loft and 34-inch width. The only downside is that the board itself weighs 24 pounds, which can feel noticeably heavy when it’s being carried. However, we appreciate that the board comes with a durable carrying bag that makes it incredibly easy to pack everything up after you’re done paddling. Whether you’re looking for a board for beginners or consider yourself an advanced paddler, the Isle Pioneer 2.0 is ideal for all types of use — and it doesn’t hurt that it’ll look nice in photos, too.

Best for Beginners

Gili air inflatable stand up paddle board.

The board is easy to maneuver and stable in the water.

Attaching the fins and adjusting the paddle height can be fairly time-consuming.

Looking for a beginner's inflatable board that's perfect for anyone looking to jump into the world of paddle boarding? The Gili Air is made with durable, high-quality PVC and is easy to maneuver. It only takes about four minutes to set up using the hand pump, but you may need a helping hand to attach all of the fins. We like the wide base of this board, which feels solid (almost like a regular paddle board), making it feel very stable while gliding over the water. While it may be pretty heavy when folded up inside the bag, the carrying case is high-quality with heavy duty straps and plenty of zippered pockets to store fins and other gear. We really appreciate that the main compartment zippers almost all the way around, so it's super easy to get the board back inside at the end of a long day. We also really like the look and feel of this board — it feels more high end for this price-point and comes in four different colors.

Best Hybrid

Isle pioneer pro kayak hybrid.

The board comes with a chair and paddle so it can be used as a kayak or a stand-up paddle board.

It can be difficult to set up and break down the board and accessories.

Isle’s new Pioneer Pro paddle board comes with a kayak conversion kit so you get a two-in-one paddle board and kayak. The kit comes with one seat, a foot rest, and extra parts to turn the regular paddle into one designed for kayaking with double-sided paddles. It can be a bit overwhelming at first to set up the paddle board with all of the kayak accessories, so you’ll want to allot extra time for learning to hooking in the seat. We used both an electric and manual pump to inflate the board, and while the electric pump was, of course, the fastest option, it wasn’t too cumbersome to pump it up by hand.

After testing the board as a kayak in a lake, river, and ocean, it definitely won’t replace the sturdiness and maneuverability of a regular kayak , but it’s a great option for leisurely paddling or activities like fishing or yoga. The board itself is quite large, but, thankfully, it comes with a sturdy bag with backpack straps and wheels, which makes it easy to pack the deflated board and accessories. Another thing to note is that the board can be difficult to roll up. We found the easiest method is to roll it with the bottom facing upwards.

Most Portable

Bote breeze aero inflatable paddle board.

It folds up into a compact size and fits in the backpack carrying case for easier transportation and storage.

The board is on the heavier side and could include more accessories.

Bote’s Breeze Aero paddle board was super easy to bring on a long road trip thanks to its compact carrying case that could fit in the trunk of a small car without any issues. When we carried it from the car down the river to be inflated, the padded backpack straps, hip belt, and adjustable chest strap were game-changing for comfort and support. It took under 15 minutes to inflate the paddle board by hand with the included manual pump, and then we were out on the water. The board comes with a paddle that is simple to adjust out on the water and a removable fin that adds lots of stability on the lake and ocean with larger waves. We do wish it came with an ankle strap or a few other accessories — especially with the new magnetic “magnepod” feature to attach accessories — instead of Bote selling everything separately. It’s on the heavier side at 20 pounds, but when it’s inflated or deflated, we didn’t find it too cumbersome to carry. Best of all, after summer is over, the compact carrying case and board are small enough to fit in a storage closet or under the bed for even easier storage for next season.

Best for Families

Pelican inflatable loungeboard.

The wide design and high weight capacity allows for multiple family members to ride at once.

The inflation process is a little complicated.

Families who like to be on the water together will appreciate the Pelican Inflatable Loungeboard and its wide size of 39 inches across. We were able to fit multiple kids on one board without fighting for space. The board also has the highest weight capacity on this list, safely holding up to 400 pounds. It didn't feel quite as firm as other boards we've tried (inflatable or otherwise), but that didn't hinder its stability in any way, and we were able to navigate the water with the included paddle easily. There was great traction on the top of the board and very little sliding of our feet over the course of the hour we were standing. It also comes with several fin options that slid on and off easily with a handy locking mechanism to keep them in place. We did find the bag cumbersome to carry due to its size and would have preferred a backpack carrying style like many other paddle boards offer. We also thought the inflation process was more difficult than other boards we've tried, although this may have been due to an issue with the valve or pump itself. Overall, we think this is a great board for families or couples who want to take multiple people along for the ride.

Other Inflatable Paddle Boards We Liked

As we tested nearly two dozen inflatable paddle boards, there were some we liked, but not enough to add to our final list of recommendations due to minor issues.

Bluefin Cruise Carbon : This board had excellent performance and comes with a kayak conversion kit, but it weighs a whopping 31 pounds, which isn’t ideal for portability.

Retrospec Weekender 2 Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board : We found this affordable board to be a great option for beginners in ideal weather conditions. However, it didn't feel stable enough for us to trust it in choppy waters.

We tested more than 20 inflatable paddle boards to paddle in lakes, rivers, and oceans to find the best ones on the market. After several trips to the water and multiple hours of paddling, each board was evaluated every board based on portability, ease of use, performance, and quality.

Travel + Leisure / David Lee

First, we unboxed each paddle board, paying close attention to the accessories included like a pump, paddle, carrying bag, ankle strap, and other additional items. Then, we used the included pump to inflate the board, timing how long it took to get to the recommended air pressure it needed to support the weight capacity. The paddle boards scoring the highest for ease of use had a hassle-free inflation and deflation process, and the accessories proved to help use the board. To test portability, we carried the inflated paddle boards out to the water to get a feel for their weight and the handles' grip.

Our favorite boards for portability were exceptionally lightweight and easy to carry whether the board was inflated or folded into the carrying bag. After using the paddle boards on the water in various conditions, (windy, calm, etc.) the best paddle boards we tried for performance provided a solid amount of stability and glided over the water smoothly. Finally, our top-performing paddle boards appeared to be made with high-quality PVC materials and drop-stitch work to ensure durability with prolonged use, and the included accessories like the paddle and carrying bag felt sturdy and well-made, too.

Tips for Buying an Inflatable Paddle Board

Consider the size for stability and maneuverability.

For paddle boarders looking for the best portability and maneuverability, consider a board with a length of 10 feet or shorter for the best performance. If you’re looking to paddle long distances quickly, a 12-foot board will be better geared for that. Any length in the middle (10 to 12 feet) is ideal length for all types of paddlers. And if you’re new to paddle boarding, the width can help with stability, so be sure to look for boards with a 30 to 32-inch width.

Portability is crucial

If you’re looking to hike or walk long distances with a paddle board, it’s important to check the weight of the board and ensure the carrying bag has padded straps for added comfort. We tried paddle boards weighing 13 to 24 pounds and found that the boards weighing over 17 pounds were noticeably harder to carry and slightly unwieldy. While it ultimately depends on the activity you plan on using the paddle boards for, the weight and carrying case can make a huge difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

While it may be hard to get your footing on the paddle board at first, once you start to get a feel for the balance needed to paddle, it gets easier. If you’re more comfortable paddling on your knees or while sitting, those are two great options for getting out on the water without standing.

When you’re paddling in a large body of water, it’s smart to wear a swimsuit or quick-drying clothes. Paddle boarding has a balance learning curve, so you might end up in the water, even if you’re a seasoned paddler. For safety purposes, you’ll want to either wear a life jacket or keep one on board when you’re out on the water.

When it comes to travel, inflatable paddle boards are definitely better than hard boards as they can compress down and store into a stuff sack for easy portability. Even if you don't plan to travel far, inflatable paddle boards can be more stable than hard-shell boards, making them a much easier option for beginners.

Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 Review: The Lightest, Most Packable Inflatable Kayak

Yes, some kayaks are packable , but they're still too big or not convenient for transport - and many don't offer the performance suited for challenging conditions or long miles. That's where Aquaglide's Cirrus Ultralight 110 breaks the mold.

This inflatable kayak is performance-driven, efficient, light yet capable of carrying cargo, and a joy to paddle. It can be a kayak for a casual paddle down your local river, or a vessel for a bigger adventure. And at under 15 pounds, the boat, which packs into a dry bag, is also extremely easy to travel with.

In short: Aquaglide's Cirrus 110 is the most high-performance open cockpit kayak that we've tried. At sub-15 pounds, it's also the lightest and most compact when it's rolled up and stored in the included drybag. At first glance, it’s similar in concept to the Kokopelli Chasm Lite . When assembled, the boat is comfortable enough to paddle for long hours over multiple days, with the storage space to carry the gear you need for overnight trips. We were most impressed with the boat's straight tracking and efficient handling, and capability to carry extra weight. It's also fast to set up - inflation only took a couple of minutes.

  • Extremely light and packable

Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 Inflatable Kayak Review

Aquaglide's Cirrus Ultralight 110 and its sister boat, the tandem Cirrus Ultralight 150 , are high-performance touring boats that are the lightest and most packable you can buy. They're easy to set up and to pack up, they track straight and paddle efficiently, and they're fun for casual outings as well as overnight trips.

The boats are made from TPU/nylon construction with a TPU drop-stitch floor. This is the lightest construction for an inflatable kayak that's also stiff enough to be enjoyable and efficient to paddle for miles or days. The hull of the boat is double-coated 0.13mm TPU 70-denier nylon fabric, which is rigid when inflated, but supple and easily foldable when deflated.

The floor is made from Ultra DropStitch TPU (TPU ULDS). It gives the boat comfortable padding and adds additional rigidity. Because the boat is TPU and not PVC, it can be recycled at the end of its life.

The boat comes in a drybag that can be filled with clothing or gear and stashed under the boat’s bow or stern webbing. It can also be stored in the cargo bay behind the seat once the boat is out of the bag and on the water.

The open-cockpit Cirrus 110 Ultralight is a single-person boat made for touring, expeditions, and overlanding. Because it packs so small, it's the ideal boat for van lifers, or anyone with limited storage space, from apartment dwellers to RVers. The 11-foot boat is 35 inches wide and 10 inches high, with a 9.5-inch tube diameter.

The 14-pound kayak comes packed inside a drybag that also includes an inflatable seat, footrest, and fin with pin. Folded, the boat is 19 x 19 x 8 inches, and if you really focus, you can pack it even smaller than that. A pump, paddle, and PFD are sold separately.

Inflating the Boat

The Cirrus Ultralight 110 has three primary inflation chambers, the two sides of the kayak, and the floor. You can use a standard pump for this. The chamber valves have the same connectors as a SUP - a Halkey-Roberts valve. The seat is also inflatable, but it needs to be manually inflated (by mouth).

Both when I used a manual pump and when I used an electric pump, the boat was extremely quick to inflate. Chambers are inflated to 3 psi and 6 psi, which is very low pressure compared to what it takes to inflate a SUP. Because the dual side tubes and the floor each inflate separately, this boat feels significantly more rigid than other inflatables I've tried.

Inflate the boat with the valve in the extended position, the air goes in but doesn't come out (one way). If the valve is locked into the compressed/open position, as soon as you remove the connector, the boat will deflate.

When I wanted to deflate the boat, I pressed the valve in and was able to lock it open for passive deflation. This is also a fairly common setup across inflatable kayak models and brands.

The Fin and Tracking

Once the boat is inflated, it's time to attach the fin. Aquaglide's weed-free fin design was super easy to set up, and it helped the boat track straight.

The plastic fin slides into a track on the bottom of the boat and secures with an expanding toggle pin, which can be squeezed to release the fin when you're ready to repack the boat. The toggle is also attached to the fin so that it doesn't get lost (again, a common feature of inflatable boats).

Because the fin is low profile, even paddling a pond with milfoil, the fin didn't get bogged down and wrapped in weeds. We found the low-profile fin cleared any vegetation almost instantly. And, the Cirrus Ultralight was easy to both steer straight and turn on flatwaters and in rivers.

The Seat and Footrest

With the fin installed and the boat inflated, I placed it in the water and installed Aquaglide's high-back inflatable seat. It clips onto D-rings on the sides of the boat, and wedges between inflatable chambers that hold it in place. Side straps are adjustable with a pull on the end of the webbing, which gave me enough range to paddle sitting up very straight and also semi-reclined.

The floor of the boat has long Velcro loop strips that gave me a huge range of options of where to attach the fabric-covered TPU foam footrest, which has long straps with "hooks" that attach to the loops. The footrest has a low-profile triangle shape with enough space to brace my heels.

Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 on the Water

I expected this boat to paddle like a duckie. Instead, it was a straight-tracking, easy-to-maneuver craft that was rigid and responsive, and a delight to paddle. Whether I was paddling it around Vermont's lakes and reservoirs, or floating down the Winooski River, the boat was responsive and went where I wanted it to without a struggle. That included when I paddled with just me in the boat, and when I loaded the boat with 50-75 pounds of "cargo" - my dogs.

While this boat is open cockpit, it's not a sit on top. Sitting on the boat's inflatable seat, I was inside the sidewalls of the boat, so there was none of the tippiness of a standard sit on top.

The seat was comfortable and easy to adjust to keep my back comfortable on long paddles. I could bring myself into a more upright position by tightening the side straps, or I could settle in to a more reclined position when the conditions were appropriate.

I love to paddle with my dogs. This boat has a spacious rear cargo zone that easily accommodated my 75-pound rescue, Maple. When I first loaded up Maple, I thought that her nails might puncture the boat. But the boat proved shockingly tough for such lightweight construction. Even when Maple moved around while we were paddling in waves or got a change of scenery, the boat was stable and I never felt like I would capsize.

For touring, the cargo storage bay (behind the seat area) could hold camping gear and a cooler for an overnight or multiple overnights. There's was also plenty of room in front of my feet for gear, and both the bow and stern had bungees that held a PFD, flip-flops, and dry bags. The cargo storage bay could also easily hold a child.

In addition to bungeed storage, the boat has a Mini-MOLLE Attachment System on the cockpit right next to the seat. It's a great place to clip in a knife, sunscreen, GPS , and other gear I wanted to keep at my fingertips.

In waves or in water fights, the boat sometimes got water inside. In many instances, it was easy enough to pick it up and dump it. A drain port on the bottom also unscrews to drain water from inside the cockpit if necessary.

Expedition-Ready? (With Exceptions)

Aquaglide says that this boat is suitable for expeditions. It has the stability as well as the storage for multiday trips. Most importantly, it can support a person plus gear.

But, the boat can’t accommodate a spray skirt. It’s not suitable for ocean or other cold-weather paddling where you’d need a spray skirt, or where conditions could involve the boat rolling. Yes, you could use this boat for some great trips, within these limitations.

Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110: Conclusion

I loved paddling this boat both for a cruise around a lake, and for longer river adventures. While I never got to go camping in it during the time I had it for testing, I plan to soon. And if I get to travel to some tropical beach destination this winter, for sure I'll pack this boat.

It's so light and small - it will fit inside a checked bag with clothes, mask, and snorkel. The Cirrus Ultralight 110 is dog-approved for being unlikely to capsize, and for being plenty spacious to lie down in.

It's human-approved for its big carrying capacity-to-weight ratio, practicality in muddy and grassy waters, and being a whole lot of fun. The fact that I could carry dogs, gear, and myself is an impressive point and a big draw for this ultralight boat.

Finally, we’ve got to mention the price. For all that fun, capability, and performance - in an ultralight package - it’ll set you back $1,300. Not bad for a kayak, but definitely more expensive than some of our favorite alternatives ( performance SUPs and packrafts ).

Aquaglide's Cirrus Ultralight boats come in two sizes. The 110, which I tested, is 11 feet and weighs 14.75 pounds. The 150 is 15 feet and weighs 18 pounds. Note: the latter is intended for tandem. While we only tested the 110, based on its performance, we hope the 150 paddles just as well.

Product Tips

When folding your deflated SUP board for transport or storage, it is very important to keep the fin plates flat. Folding the fin plates will deform and potentially damage them, making it impossible to insert your fins. Here on the product page, watch the video "How To Deflate Your Inflatable SUP Board" for a demonstration.
