Journey To Ragnarok – Adventure and Setting

Journey To Ragnarok – Adventure and Setting

Regular price $49.90

“While once you were nameless among the throngs of your clan, now you have carved for yourselves a place of honor in the history of the northern lands.

Now bards sing of your deeds, and your name is known by everybody, causing terror in your enemies and earning you the admiration of your allies.

Wherever you go, Jarlar and Kings throw rich banquets in your honor and the requests of help in these dark nights of the long winter grow by the day.”

Journey to Ragnarok is a 5E setting and adventure module of the world's most famous role-playing game that will immerse you in an epic and mythological setting. This book series is the result of over ten years of research, a game that represents the fusion of our passion for role-playing and Norse culture.

  • The Fundamentals Of Norse Mythology : a lot of information about the Nine Worlds and the main legends of Norse mythology.
  • A Rich And Detailed Setting : in addition to the Nine Worlds, you will discover the Peoples of Midgard. 6 warring Clans, and 8 new Backgrounds inspired by Norse mythology, to create truly epic characters and adventures.
  • 12 new Class Archetypes: from the mighty Path of the Storm Wielder , to the Circle of Yggdrasill , from the Unshaped , to the School of the Wanderer . In addition, a new Class is ready to travel between the Nine Worlds: the Rune Master .
  • A Compendium of Rune Divination : when a rune appears in the game, you can harness its power thanks to these special optional rules. You can use the Runic Die, designed especially for Journey to Ragnarok , or rely on the traditional method, i.e. extracting the runes from a pouch.
  • Magical Items : from the feathered cloak of the divine Freja, to the Heart Medallion of Muspellsheimr, the items in Journey to Ragnarok will enchant you!
  • Creatures, Encounters, and Maps : everything you need to experience heroic adventures, to travel the Nine Worlds, and to immerse yourself in this highly detailed setting. You will also find stats of the powerful Gods of the Norse pantheon and dangerous Mythological Beasts!
  • An Adventure Module for characters from level 1 to level 15 : to immediately start playing and exploring this Norse setting, its legends, the characters' relationship to journey, discovery, the divine creatures, and your heroic deeds.

Journey to Ragnarok Review, Part 1

I’ve been eyeing  Journey to Ragnarok by Mana Project Studio for some time. With all the games on my shelves already waiting for more time and an ongoing and firmly-established  Adventures in Middle-earth campaign underway I just couldn’t justify it. The reviews and reaction, though, have kept this product firmly in my mind and I recently used up some of my earned credit to purchase it. Let’s see what’s inside!

I’ll start on a somewhat prickly note to say that the editing in this book is… lacking. There are so many typos and weird formatting issues that it’s a little distracting. I’m not going to mention that in this review, though, as I think the content can be evaluated without worrying too much about the words. At the end of the day,  Journey to Ragnarok is an ambitious and epic setting-and-campaign combination that will surely have people’s imaginations going. Like  Trudvang and the northern portions of  Early Dark , this setting cleaves closely to historical realities of Norse culture without bothering to set it in the  actual real world. Sure there’s a Jutland  mentioned and plenty of Old Norse terms thrown around but whether sailing south will take you to Italy or just a southern foreign land is up to you.

I’m going to focus in this first part on why I think most people would consider this book. Between the DM’s Guild and the many campaigns out of Wizards there’s so much to keep your 5e group busy. What  Journey to Ragnarok offers is an alternative take on  D&D  that firmly puts it in the Norse mythos.

Journey to Ragnarok - Clamoring Horn

Setting Changes

After a discussion of the Nine Worlds of Scandinavian mythology (which I won’t get into here, but it does have some new angles I hadn’t heard before),  Journey to Ragnarok gets into ways to make  D&D 5e feel different in this setting. Some of them, such as how to handle death and a new skill of Asatru  (an Icelandic term for “allegiance to the Æsir”), are pretty vague and almost certain to lead to some arbitration from the GM. Others, though, are really cool and exciting.

One that I’m pretty intrigued by is an alternate alignment system for  Journey to Ragnarok , and not the usual sort of reworking. I’ve seen alternatives that involve using characteristics or labels ( Adventures in Middle-earth , for example, relies on the corruption-tracking Shadow points and even the DMG  has an Honor system) but this one keeps the familiar two-axis model and just switches it to something more appropriate. There’s still a Law vs. Chaos axis but instead of Good and Evil the characters here are  Honorable vs. Dishonorable (according to the Nine Noble Virtues from the Poetic Edda). There are some holes since the sections on this are rather short but I’m already thinking of for lots of different settings so watch for that in a future post.

Another part I like is the  Option Rule on magic in the Nine Worlds which is very reminiscent of how magic was affected on various planes in  Planescape back in the day. You can do it by school of magic or damage type but it’s pretty straightforward with effects being Altered (aesthetically), Augmented, Diminished, or Unaltered. It’s simple but very much in line with the 5e model and it’s a great source of inspiration or anyone wanting magic affected by location (including anyone looking to run  Planescape  5e).

There are a dozen different subclasses found in  Journey to Ragnarok and they’re not all barbarian paths! In fact, there’s only one barbarian path and (mostly) one for each of the other classes in the  Player’s Handbook .

Journey to Ragnarok - Sacrifice Cleric

  • The  Path of the Storm Wielder for the barbarian is pretty interesting, but it also shares an awful lot with the Path of the Storm Herald  from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything . It’s different, but you probably don’t want both in the same party.
  • The  College of Valhalla for the bard is probably my favorite. It makes you tougher and a good combat leader, but at 6th level also has an awesome storytelling mechanic that allows you to literally make someone into a legend.
  • The  Sacrifice Domain for clerics definitely hits the notes that you see among the gods in Norse legends. By taking on permanent injuries (there’s a list including losing an eye, losing your hand, etc) they can get a benefit to call in later, though the trade-off seems pretty one-sided. Luckily, that’s just the big mechanic and there are other ways to be a one-eyed grimdark priest.
  • The  Circle of Yggdrasill for the druid is a planewalking option for the class that lets you shift your abilities to attune with a new World as you move about the branches of the World Ash.
  • The  Warden archetype for fighters is all about defending and protecting, whether as a stalwart guardian or the fan-favorite Shield Maiden . It’s pretty tough and has a number of different tactics to call in (similar to the battle master) and is definitely voted “Most Likely to Be Overpowered.”
  • The  Way of Glima for monks gives you a setting-appropriate option for an unarmed warrior, following the folk wrestling  of Scandinavian cultures. Certainly not every monk has to follow this archetype but if you want another subclass you’ll have to figure that out since there isn’t any guidance.
  • The  Oath of the Chosen is for those paladins who are living their lives as a long-term investment to entering Valhalla. I think it probably leads to the sort of grim, no-humor paladin that irks people but it’s a solid and thematic archetype.

Journey to Ragnarok - Jötunn-blooded Sorcerer

  • The  Unshaped archetype for the rogue is a pretty interesting one, basically an arcane trickster with all illusion magic and a heavy connection to Loki. If you want to switch your appearance and lie your butt off, this is the subclass for you.
  • The  Jötunn Origin for the sorcerer is good but not too surprising: you’re really good at making people cold and eventually summon ice elementals.
  • The  Endbringer otherworldly patron for warlocks is an interesting option given the campaign trajectory. You form a pact with some monster like Nidhoggr , Fenrir , or Jörmungandr for some pretty nasty abilities, though I don’t know how that would play out as your party literally watches these creatures devour the world.
  • The  Norns otherworldly patron is a surprise double-feature for the warlock and a little more understandable. Your expanded powers are all fate-manipulation and divination which makes for a very different sort of warlock.
  • The  School of the Wanderer for wizards is a thoroughly Odhinn-related option that gives you increased magic (he was the god of magic) and increased knowledge (ditto) but also a silver tongue. Very different option for wizards.

In addition to all of these, there’s a brand new class presented here! The  Rune Master is an arcane spellcasting class with the same spell progression as the wizard (though fewer cantrips for reasons you’ll see in a bit) but a focus on ritual and planning ahead. They can create a circle of Futhark runes , for example, that makes an area more deadly for attacking enemies and the ability to paint runes on your allies to give them ongoing benefits. You even get to swap out cantrips (a unique option) though that’s not exactly even with the low number you permanently know. It’s an interesting twist since now we have an option beyond wizard on the Improvisation vs. Planning spectrum of arcane casters. The subclass archetypes, “Ætt,” involve specializing in runes devoted to a god ( Heimdallr , Freyja , or Tyr ) that provide additional spells and inscribing abilities.

Since the expectation in Journey to Ragnarok is that you’ll be playing a human, the setting includes six Clans which can color your particular strain of human. It’s actually a little unclear how and whether you should include other races like dwarves and elves (those two in particular are found later in the book but only as NPCs) but maybe that’s just another area for your table to decide. In the book Clans come before Classes (since it’s part of picking your race) but I thought people would like to see some mechanics first. See, there’s actually no mechanical effect for your Clan, it’s purely narrative. This is just fine but I think people might like to see a little more.

Journey to Ragnarok - Scarred Warrior

The major Clans of the setting are the  Gjallarhorn and  Odhinn’s Eye , the descendants of kings and the descendants of Odhinn respectively. Between the two of them, they control most of the North, ate least all the civilized bits. These are Clans in the true sense, people who are related to each other and live together in communities that are mostly their own sort. This is also true of the  Wolves of the Shadow who are more of a wilderness-living, half-wild group that occupies the hinterlands (and who is sure to shine in the harsh days of Ragnarok).

Other groups are “Clans” more in the sense of brotherhood and shared values. The  Bear Warriors are a martial brotherhood who are the classic berserkers of Viking legend. They technically live in their own villages but they are scattered and leaderless so they are more of a facet of the setting’s politics than a true force. Likewise, the  Icy Crows are a collection of “hermits, wise seers, sorcerers and Skalds” who live throughout the north and try to maintain the old legends and proper veneration of the gods. Now, it might seem like all the Bear Warriors are going to have the barbarian class (or the Wolf Pack ranger archetype described above) and all the Icy Crows will be some sort of arcane class but that’s not necessarily true. If you want to be part of these Clans and have a non-obvious class, though, that’s on you to figure out because there’s not really any discussion here.

Lastly, the  Jötunn Sons are outcasts and thieves, those who were cast out of civilized society to eke what existence they could from the swamps and wild lands of the North. They have a ramshackle encampment off in the wilderness so you’re not some half-starved wretch (unless you want to be) but you’re also not welcome in other Clans’ villages. So how do you incorporate a Jötunn Son PC into a party from other Clans? This is becoming a refrain but: you’ll have to figure that out on your own.

Backgrounds

There are ____ different Backgrounds presented in the book, and you could presumably use ones from the  Player’s Handbook though (say it with me) you’ll have to figure that out on your own. The  Bondhi is landholder which is a big responsibility and comes with corresponding privilege, especially if you opt for the very prestigious Hersir variant with an estate. The  Gothi is a spiritual leader (though not necessarily a priest) who oversees a community’s rituals for harvest, birth, and so on. A  Huscarl is a more well-known term, a warrior pledged to one of the land’s high leaders. A  Jarlr is one of the nobility who draws on his revered ancestors for personal power.

Journey to Ragnarok - Snowed-In Village

On the other end of the spectrum, a  Skògarmadhr (“one who lives in the woods”) is an oucast unwelcome in society for some dark crime. Like those of the Jötunn Sons clan, it’s up to you and your group to figure out how this allows you to be part of an adventuring party. A  Thrallr is an indentured slave working off some debt (maybe to another party member?) who is afforded some protection by their master. There’s also the option of being a foreign slave from the “Deep South” (meaning Europe) which gives you some knowledge of foreign lands… which seems pretty useless to me. The  Vaeringi is a trader who ventures to foreign lands and so has some outsider knowledge and guild benefits from other traders. Conversely, the  Vikingr also goes up rivers to foreign lands but is more interested in burning and looting than in trading, though interestingly their benefit is also support from other Vikingar.

The player-facing section winds up with some notes on equipment. A short lists labels certain items from the  Player’s Handbook that are foreign and exotic in the lands of  Journey to Ragnarok , and so only available at double the normal cost. There are also notes on adding short bearded axes and “assault axes” to the melee weapon options. In a tone similar to  Adventures in Middle-earth there are also “Clan Heirlooms” which you can hope to be gifted with over the course of the campaign.

Using this part of the book for a Norse-style campaign of your own design (or a Norse-style region of a campaign world) would certainly save you some time. There are a ton of good options here and some excellent worldbuilding that will make you itch to create your own Clan champion or Jötunn-blooded sorcerer. There are holes, though, and it reads a little incomplete so the group will have some work ahead of them to fill in the gaps. Still, you can always just play it right off the page and figure out the fiddly bits as things go on.

Next time, I’ll take a look at the campaign itself (as spoiler-free as I can manage) with a look at how  Journey to Ragnarok feels as a setting that could tell multiple stories. If you’ve played this or are also interested, let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Have you ever played Fate of the Norns?

I have also picked this up and looking at how to start this epic up. The teaser adventure the Grey Wanderer was really tight and atmospheric whereas this feels so open that weaving a cohesive, engaging narrative appears really challenging.

See, I was coming at it from “looks like this could be a fun campaign path, but could it be a setting?” In Part 2, I’ll try to look at both sides!

10 DreamWorks Villains To Create In Dungeons And Dragons (& How To Build Them)

The 10 best dungeons and dragons miniatures (updated 2023), 10 characters from god of war: ragnarok to play in dungeons and dragons (& how to build them).

  • Core stats in D&D 5e, like Strength and Charisma, are crucial for character creation and abilities.
  • Core stats can be increased during a campaign or with specific items to enhance a character's performance.
  • Not all core stats are equally important — some, like Strength, can be considered dump stats in certain situations.

Dungeons & Dragons is a game of numbers, chance, and quick, panic-induced math. These numbers are used in both combat and roleplaying encounters, usually determining the outcome of both, and no set of numbers is as important as the six core stats . They are so pivotal to the TTRPG that the stats not only determine what player characters can do but also dictate the abilities of the many NPCs a party can meet, monsters and friendlies alike.

The six core stats are Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma . The easiest way to think about them is with a well-known tomato analogy. Strength is the ability to crush a tomato, while Dexterity is being able to dodge a thrown tomato. Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato. Intelligence is the knowledge that tomatoes are fruits, while Wisdom is knowing not to put tomatoes in a fruit salad. Charisma is the ability to sell a tomato-based fruit salad.

DreamWorks is fantastic at making memorable villains, and they're just about powerful enough to be built in Dungeons and Dragons 5e.

What D&D 5e Core Stats Are Used For

Core stats establish the character's strengths.

D&D 's core stats are used in character creation as a baseline for what a character is good or bad at. Often, along with Proficiency, they determine skill modifiers, weapon, and spell attack damage modifiers. They are also used for many class-specific abilities, which is why certain classes usually have high stats in specific areas, like rogues having high Dexterity. It is possible to ignore this and have a rogue with terrible Dexterity (it isn't advised), but multiclassing requires minimum stat thresholds to be met. For instance, characters need 13 Dexterity to multiclass into rogue.

Core stats have a normal maximum of 20. This can be exceeded in some cases, like with barbarian at level 20, when their Strength and Constitution's maximum increase to 24.

These core stats are usually distributed in three ways. There is Standard Array , where there are six predetermined scores, which are each put into one of the stats. The scores are 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8. Players can roll for stats where they roll 4d6 for each stat, ignore the lowest roll, and add the rest. Then, there is Point Buy, where all stats start at 8, and players have 27 points to spend on the stats as they wish, but no stat can exceed 15. Point spending isn't linear , however, and works as follows:

All of these stat allocation methods are used before racial buffs. This means that certain races are traditionally better for some classes , although players are advised to do whatever they want. Tieflings do tend to make better bards or warlocks with their inherent Charisma buff, but that doesn't mean tiefling clerics can't be made. It ultimately depends on whether players want to stick to a specific idea in their mind or min-max to make the most powerful character they can.

What's fun for any D&D enthusiast? Displayable and playable collectibles. Grab the best Dungeons and Dragons miniatures available now.

Not All Core Stats Are Made Equal

Some stats are better for certain classes.

Typically, classes need at least one high core stat . Some require two, like monk using both Dexterity and Wisdom, while a fighter's most important stat varies depending on what a player wants to do. If they want to use heavy weapons and armor, then Strength is what players should go for. If they wish to be quick with light weapons and armor, then Dexterity should be their go to. Usually, if a class uses two stats, one will be more important. For example, Paladin uses Charisma for spell casting, but Strength is usually more important for fighting with weapons.

Fighter subclasses can also determine what stat is used. For instance, Eldtrich Knight uses wizard spells and needs intelligence.

When using Standard Array or Point Buy, there is usually at least one 'dump stat,' meaning a stat that is intentionally left to be a character's least effective. This gives players a weakness to roleplay. When choosing a dump stat, it is best to pick one that makes sense for a character, but for min-maxers there are some things to keep in mind. Some stats affect fundamental mechanics while others do not, and the six core stats don't have an equal number of corresponding skills.

Constitution affects how much health a character has, while dexterity affects AC (when not wearing heavy armor) and Initiative rolls. Wisdom affects Passive Perception, while Charisma is used extensively in social situations thanks to skills like Deception and Persuasion . On the other hand, Strength only has one skill: Athletics. Unless a player character needs Strength, it can be a little useless, making it a popular dump stat. Intelligence skills tend to be highly specific and are useful if a DM has a rich world, but its specificity makes it a popular dump stat with Barbarians specifically.

Note that the usage of certain skills will depend on a DM and the campaign they want to run . Charisma will be more universally useful if the campaign is based around social interactions more than combat.

God of War: Ragnarok has a much bigger cast than its predecessor, and that means more potential builds for an exciting Norse-themed 5e campaign.

The Importance Of Core Stats In D&D 5e

An integral part of the game.

Core stats are pivotal in determining what a player is good at. This doesn't always mean they will succeed rolls using these stats since D&D is a game of chance, but it does increase the likelihood. Although they are first allocated during character creation at level 1, stats can be increased during a playthrough. This can be done when characters receive Ability Score Improvements at specific levels or can be artificially increased by certain magical items.

In a game with a lot of numbers, the six needed for the core stats are the most important in Dungeons & Dragons . They determine almost everything on the character sheet, essentially dictating what a character will be good and bad at. Not all are equally useful in all situations, and while a class usually determines what stat will be highest, deciding what situations a character will be worst in can be used to figure out what the dump stat could be.

The Final Shape: All You Need to Know

Jun 4, 2024 - destiny 2 community team.

The day has come, Guardians. Happy The Final Shape launch day! Much is happening today, so we wanted to help by putting everything you might need to know in one place. Let's start with The Final Shape launch trailer, shall we?

Confronting Oblivion

In our latest ViDocs, we shared why The Final Shape is so special. We talked about the emotional journey, the Witness's plans, the beloved characters you've known for almost ten years, the new powers, the dangers, the places you'll find... You know what? It's better if you just watch them yourself.

Through The Pale Heart

Crow was first. Now, it's our turn to step inside the Traveler and explore : The Pale Heart. It's strange, yet familiar. Welcoming, but unsettling. You'll first experience this new destination in a more linear way while playing through the campaign, but afterward, it will continue unfolding with new locations, challenges, and activities. And with Pathfinder—our new progression system for The Pale Heart destination and Ritual activities—you'll earn tons of rewards while doing so.

A Campaign for Legends

tfs-media-wallpaper-2.jpg

In The Final Shape campaign, you, the Vanguard, and your allies will pursue the Witness to thwart its plans. It won't be easy, especially if you play it in Legendary Mode. You'll have to test your mettle on every fight, but your efforts will earn you upgraded rewards, like a set of armor with a high enough Power Level for raid content.

Fear the Dread

The Dread is a new species born as a result of the Witness's incursion inside of the Traveler. They are a menace, and you'll need new strategies to defeat them.

Transcend Light and Darkness

During their adventures inside The Pale Heart, players will earn three new Light-based Supers, one for each Guardian class and each of them accompanied by new Aspects.

Storm's Edge Super and Ascension Aspect

Song of Flame Super and Hellion Aspect

Twilight Arsenal Super and Unbreakable Aspect

But that's not all. The blending of Light and Darkness inside of the Traveler will allow Guardians to go beyond their known limits and combine both powers for the first time with the Prismatic subclass. Players will be able to combine select features of Light and Darkness subclasses, while also having some new and powerful Fragments at their disposal, resulting in incredibly powerful builds.

With Prismatic, using Light and Darkness will also charge a new power called Transcendence, which will overflow Guardians with power, allowing them to create a unique grenade. Born from Light and Darkness, these grenades have increased damage output and regenerate at a faster pace.

The cherry on top for Prismatic is the addition of new Exotic class items. These are exclusive to the Prismatic subclass, and you earn them through a unique activity in The Final Shape. Each of these Exotic class items has a mix of two Exotic armor perks, allowing for combos that were not possible before. Check out the list of Exotic perk combinations here .

New Arsenal

Speaking of Exotics, we have a formidable lineup of new Exotic weapons that will allow you to defeat your foes in unique ways. Still Hunt shoots like a Marksman Hunter, Microcosm shoots wide beams of powerful Light, Khvostov is an old friend made anew and... well, you’ll discover what the rest do on your adventure.

Still Hunt

Microcosm

Khvostov

Six new Exotic pieces of armor will also be available in The Final Shape, two for each class. Three of these pieces have their own trailers already, check them out below.

Mataiodoxia

Gifted Conviction

Hazardous Propulsion

Of course, new Legendary gear is also needed in this fight, and we have plenty. For starters, the new destination weapons are all craftable, and some are part of new archetypes, like the new Auto Rifle that heals your allies when you shoot at them.

destination weapons.jpeg

Here's the whole list:

  • No Hesitation – Solar Support Frame Auto Rifle
  • Axial Lacuna – Solar Precision Fusion Rifle
  • Bold Endings – Stasis Heavy Burst Hand Cannon
  • Pro Memoria – Strand Aggressive Machine Gun
  • Someday – Kinetic Precision Shotgun
  • The Call – Strand Rocket-Assited Frame Sidearm
  • Embraced Identity – Void Adaptive Sniper Rifle
  • False Idols – Solar Vortex Frame Sword

And let's not forget one very important upgrade coming to many weapons, including both new weapons and those already in your vault: perk enhancing. A broad selection of Legendary weapons can now have their perks enhanced .

An Ever-Evolving Sandbox

Sandbox_PC_1920x590.jpg

Our Sandbox team has been busy making changes to weapons, armor, and abilities. We have three different articles covering the main changes coming with The Final Shape. Be prepared to buildcraft and be your strongest self by reading these:

  • Weapons Tuning Preview
  • Abilities Tuning Preview
  • Armor Tuning Preview

Additionaly, we have a preview of the perks that the new Seasonal Artifact brings to the table . It’s another crucial aspect of buildcrafting in Destiny 2.

Storm the New Raid: Salvation's Edge

In The Final Shape, Guardians will confront the Witness in the new Salvation's Edge raid launching on June 7. Our World First race will be taking place during the first 48 hours of the raid, when Contest Mode will also be active. Whether you participate in the raid with your fireteam or follow the race on Twitch Rivals , you won’t want to miss this.

Please note that we encourage all players to complete The Final Shape campaign and the Wild Card Exotic quest prior to the launch of Salvation’s Edge to have the best story experience.

Destiny 2 x Dungeons & Dragons

We’re rolling a 20 on excitement for our newave partnership with Wizards of the Coast, bringing Dungeons & Dragons to Destiny 2 in The Final Shape. Faerûn-inspired sets will be available at the Eververse store on June 4, as well as more gear and accessories inspired by this iconic role-playing franchise.

  • Gold Dragon-themed Apex Draconic set for Titans
  • Mind Flayers-themed Flayer’s Dominion set for Warlocks
  • Displacer Beast’s-themed Spectral Displacer set for Hunters
  • Queen of Dragons ship
  • Owlbear Chariot Sparrow
  • Eye Tyrant Ghost shell
  • Bigby’s Fist finisher
  • Natural 20 emote

In addition, the Bungie Store will also be offering an Eye Tyrant Beholder Ghost shell vinyl figure, inspired by the fearsome multi-eyed D&D monster.

The Year of Episodes Begins on June 11

The first Episode, Echoes, will start a new era for Destiny 2 on June 11, exactly one week after The Final Shape launches. We'll share more information about Echoes and Episodes after The Final Shape launch.

God of War Ragnarök heads to PC with DLSS, ultrawide support, and a PSN requirement for some reason

Frygg that for a laugh

Per last night’s Sony State of Play, PS5 darling and supposedly rather good action -dad adventure God of War Ragnarök is coming to PC on September 19th 2024. The good news is that the port, co-developed by Jetpack Interactive and original makers Santa Monica Studio, will pack in all the DLSS 3 , FSR 3 , and ultrawide what-have-yous that one might expect from a big, monied PC release. The bad, silly, clearly pointless news is that it will need a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, despite the complete lack of multiplayer.

That’s according to Ragnarök’s Steam page , which warns of the looming PSN demand (as does that of Until Dawn , another incoming Windows port that’s being slapped with the added login requirement). Sony’s push to insert PSN into (upon?) their PC games became infamous when Helldivers 2 players revolted, ultimately forcing the publisher to abandon the requirement . However, the more recent Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut launched with PSN fully baked in, despite it making co-op impossible to play on the Steam Deck .

Cover image for YouTube video

It’s worth repeating that PSN’s problems extend beyond the inconvenience of forcing yet another login process, or the compatibility of a single type of handheld device. Because the service itself is only available in a minority of countries, there are over 170 nations where PSN-reliant games are struck off sale by Steam , rendering them unplayable by legal means. That means the likes of Japan, the British and US Virgin Islands, Vietnam, Pakistan, and most of Africa are all locked out, and while Sony’s justification for Ghost of Tsushima amounted to PSN enabling PC/PlayStation crossplay, that doesn’t explain why it’s a requirement for purely solo games like God of War Ragnarök and Until Dawn.

The most likely reasoning, mind, isn’t hard to figure out. Any increase in PSN signups will simultaneously furnish Sony with valuable user data and make some number in a spreadsheet somewhere go higher, which in turn convinces a man in a suit that their service is excellent and beloved even as it does literally nothing to actually serve the person using it. Urgh.

Otherwise, God of War Ragnarök at least looks like a considered PC port, and will include its roguelike-flavoured Valhalla DLC as standard. You might note that this launch comes just under two years after the godkilling hackslasher’s original PS5 launch, suggesting that Sony are furthering tightening the period for which it leaves the console exclusives as console exclusives. Though if all their future ports are going to be leaden with PSN requirements, then that’s probably not as exciting a development.
