That the land is beautiful goes without saying when Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, James Madison and Herbert Hoover all had homes in the area. It’s a place that holds its history dearly and still commemorates Hoover’s 1929 visit to the area yearly.

Downtown Madison is a short stretch of historic architecture from of 18th and 19th centuries, and many are now museums. Going past the extensive vineyards and driving down Main Street is like traveling back in time, but with enough modern amenities that anyone can enjoy the experience.

Here are a few fun things to do near Madison, Virginia or within a few hours’ drive.

1 Hike in Shenandoah National Park

The Shenandoah National Park runs through Madison, Virginia, and you can access it at a few different locations. The park extends along the Blue Ridge Mountains with Skyline Drive, a 100-mile scenic road going through the center of the 80,000-acre park. The park also includes a section of the Appalachian Trail among its forested features, wetlands, waterfalls and rocky peaks like the famed Old Rag mountain. The park’s elevation is 550 feet at its lowest to over 4,049 feet at its highest and contains over 500 miles of trails, many bird species, deer, squirrels and black bears. But the park’s history, the people who used to live there, and the 100 cemeteries they left behind may be its most unique feature.

2 Experience Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello

Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia home is among the most visited in the United States. As the author of the Declaration of Independence, he is one of the most revered writers in the country, if not the world. Much of his work and history has been preserved in his Monticello home , which is open for tours. Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, Monticello is worth visiting if you are interested in American history, colonial culture, or architecture. The house is up a long, winding green path with a majestic view for miles that just might make it worth the trip.  

Fun Fact: The house is an icon of American architecture and the only private home featured on the U.S. currency. It’s on the back of the nickel.

3 Visit Poplar Forest

You may be familiar with Monticello, but Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home, Popular Forest, is less known . This is the place, two hours south of Madison, Virginia, in Bedford Country, where Jefferson went when he wanted privacy from the many visitors at home. Architecture experts say it’s his crowning achievement.

Visitors can take a guided or self-guided app-based tour through the house and grounds, where they’ll see the main level of the house, the wing of offices, historical exhibits, the ornamental gardens and the enslaved dwellings. The outbuildings include displays about the archaeology, restoration and history of Poplar Forest. There’s a prominent feature on Jefferson’s enslaved community, especially the Hemmings family.

4 Go Spelunking in the Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns in Virginia is the third most-visited cave system in the United States, and it’s the only one with a stalagmite pipe organ – named the world’s biggest underground instrument by Guinness World Records. The Luray Caverns are a United States National Landmark in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, less than two hours from Madison, Virginia. No matter which direction you drive from, you’ll travel through wide-open swaths of land, rolling hills and tiny historic towns.

General Admission includes access not just to Luray Caverns but other attached attractions, including a Shenandoah Heritage Village, Toy Town Junction, and the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum. There’s also a hedge maze, rope gym, golf course and other attractions to occupy families for hours, if not days.

5 See James Monroe’s Highland

The area certainly has its share of famous homes of former presidents . You’ll find James Monroe’s Highland just a few miles from Monticello. The fifth U.S. president built the original farmhouse in 1823 but continued to add to his “castle cabin” for the next 20 years. You’ll find a surprisingly humble abode and the smallest presidential home in the area. What it has, however, that none of the others do is a view of Monticello in the distance.

6 Tour George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Each year one million people tour George Washington’s Mount Vernon home, making it a top United States attraction. It’s just a lovely two-hour drive away from Madison, Virginia. As the beloved home of America’s first President and an American landmark, it is worth visiting. More than that, it’s a historically essential preservation of colonial America life. Not only is the original home preserved, but so are the grounds and the artifacts of the plantation community. It is also the site of Washington’s grave.

7 Visit James Madison’s Montpelier

You can’t go to Madison, Virginia, without stopping by the home of its namesake. The town was named for the Madison family, who you know though James Madison, America’s fourth president. His home, Montpelier , at 2,600+ acres, is enormous by today’s standards. It’s a great place to go hiking too. Eight miles of trails in James Madison’s Landmark Forest surround the property, while signage gives historical information about the land. Montpelier is worth visiting if you’re interested in American history or enjoy wooded hiking trails.

8 Stroll through Arlington National Cemetery

There are 600+ acres in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. where seeing so many uniform graves is stunning. Additionally, there are at least 35 other monuments and memorials in Arlington National Cemetery. They stand for past wars, combat groups and divisions, space shuttles like Challenger, specific demographics of people such as the Spanish-American War Nurses, battles, people and more. Here you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and see the changing of the guard and visit President John F. Kennedy’s grave with its eternal flame,  among other things.

They offer motorized tours, and the large visitor center has a wealth of information about the land and the people buried there.

9 Go to Washington, D.C., to see Monuments and Museums

The United States capital is just two hours from Madison, Virginia and has so many things to see and do you’ll want to make it an overnight trip. The city has hundreds of monuments, memorials, statues, and historic sites. Deciding which ones to see can be mind-boggling, but only a few are required viewing, depending on your interests.

Deciding which monuments and memorials in Washington D.C. to see may be easier than determining whether you’ll see them at night or the day because the monuments have a different look depending on the sun or moon above.

There are also 70+ museums in the city! These take significantly more time to visit than a monument, so you’ll want to choose wisely. The Smithsonian museums are world-class, and I suggest starting there. Not only is what’s inside the museum spectacular, but the architectural features on the exteriors make them all at least worth a drive by.

10 Visit the Historic Triangle: Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg

About two hours east of Madison, Virginia, you’ll find the historic triangle of three towns. Each is worth the trip.

Historic Jamestown is where the Powhatan Indians lived for centuries before the English arrived in 1607 and established the first British colony. It’s the actual archeological site of the original city. Here, you’ll find predominantly outdoor exhibits and spaces. You’ll be able to see archeologists working to uncover the old town and many recreated displays. The archeology takes you through the history of the Virginia colony through 1699.

Yorktown, Virginia, is famous as the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. It’s where Cornwallis’ British Army surrendered, and George Washington won the American Revolution. There you’ll see the battlements, surrender field, the ramparts where the boy waved the white flag, and the Moore house where they agreed to the conditions of freedom. The area has so much history of the battles conducted by George Washington, Marquise de Lafayette, Alexander Hamilton, and others.

Colonial Williamsburg is famous as being the first capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699 and was home to many notable people in early American history. In Williamsburg, most businesses and houses are original, restored or recreated to look still as the town would have looked hundreds of years ago. As Virginia’s capital until 1780, it was the center of education and culture. All the famous people of the day, such as George Washington, Patrick Henry, James Madison, George Wythe, Peyton Randolph, and others, have walked its streets.

11 Wineries and Breweries

The region around Madison, Virginia, is known for wineries and a few great breweries. You can spend days visiting each of them, doubling as an excellent road trip among spectacular scenery. Much of the wine country can is along the Monticello Wine Trail , inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision for the region. Here are just a few worth visiting.

• Early Mountain Vineyards , 6109 Wolftown Hood Road, was right down the street from me. It has a great outdoor space with spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially at sunset.
• Fieldstone Trails, 2585 S F T Valley Rd, is a winery that offers horseback rides.
• Bald Top Brewing , 1830 Thrift Road, is a historic farm brewery that uses hops and plants grown on its own farm.
• Blue Quartz Winery & Shotwell Run Brewing Company , 2585 S F T Valley Road, overlooks the famed Old Rag Mountain.
• DuCard Vineyards , 40 Gibson Hollow Ln, has seven acres of French and Virginia grapes.

If you like hiking, wine and breweries, history, architecture, and the great outdoors, Madison, Virginia, is worth visiting.

Things to do in madison va.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Madison VA earlier in the month and let me tell you, it is a wine lovers dream! One of the great things about this Small Town Travel Series is that I’ve gotten to work with so many great local wineries along the way.

The Taste of the Mountains Festival was happening in downtown Madison while I was in town. This was a great local street festival full of crafts, art, music, food, and wine! I highly recommend visiting during this time next year – it’s one of the best street festivals I’ve ever been to. The streets are filled with tents that seem to never end. Everyone was very nice and the weather was great! So here are my ideas for “Best things to do in Madison VA.”

Our Itinerary:

• Check-in at the Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast
• Day at the Taste of the Mountains Festival
• Prince Michael Vineyards
• Revelation Vineyards
• DuCard Vineyards
• Lunch at Jenny Lynd’s Pizza  (some of the best pizza ever and I am a pizza lover)
• Relax at the B&B
• Dinner at Mad Local
• Homemade breakfast at the  Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast
• Coffee at Cake Krums
• Tasting & Lunch at Early Mountain Vineyards
• Tasting at Blue Quartz Winery
• Drinks (& Music if available) at Bald Top Brewing
• Dinner at Bavarian Chef

The Bed & Breakfast:

We had a fabulous stay at Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast . The owner, Alan, was a great host and makes a delicious breakfast each morning. Alan lives in the house, along with his new dog “Jedi” and bird “Sweetie” (who can do more tricks than Jedi). The beauty of staying at a bed and breakfast is that you always get something unique – and our time at Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast  was no different.

We had plenty of space to feel at home. Our rooms were located upstairs, which also offered a nice public living space. The back porch was another favorite location to enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. This was actually one of the larger B&B’s that I’ve stayed at in the past. The extra personal space was a great feature!

Mad Local  is an excellent dining option for a local, unique twist on American classics. They offer a variety of local beers and local wines, along with food that melts in your mouth. The hospitality was great, everything was very clean, and the atmosphere was very laid back. Mad Local would be a great casual dining option if you find yourself near Madison VA!

• Cheese Fries , topped with cheddar cheese, jalapenos, green onions, hardwood smoked bacon crumbles and black pepper ranch*****
• Dirty South Tacos , house marinated and Fried SVO chicken, smoked Gouda pimento cheese, honey BBQ sauce, lettuce, and pickled jalapenos****
• Steak Sandwich , steak grilled to perfection, topped with lettuce and smothered in cheese and a side salad****

**Stars indicate my personal favorites on a scale from 1-5**

Early Mountain Vineyards

Early Mountain Vineyards  is stunning in every way imaginable. The building, the decor, and the views are all gorgeous. There is no surprise that this is a very popular wedding venue.

In addition to wine tastings and wine by the glass or bottle, Early Mountain offers a small menu with big tastes. We enjoyed an Artisanal Charcuterie & Cheese Board along with the Classic Flight which offered a variety of white, rose, and red wines to taste.

They have many great locations to sit back and enjoy a day with friends. If interested in getting a table, I recommend making reservations ahead of time. Walk-ins are a better option if you are just looking to do a tasting at the bar. There also picnic tables where you can enjoy a bottle of wine outside.

Blue Quartz Winery

Blue Quartz Winery  is a brand new winery with a gorgeous tasting room and the outside offers even better views of the mountains. We enjoyed a tasting of the four wines that they are currently serving. Later, we decided to sit outside with a glass of their 2018 Viognier.

As mentioned, the winery is brand new. And for those who may not know this, grapevines take 3-5 years to mature enough to produce fruit that is acceptable for winemaking. Therefore, during this time they have been purchasing grapes from other local Virginia vineyards. Everything we tasted was great – and I’d love to go back and try their own wines once their own grapes are able to be harvested. They also make and serve their own craft beer!

Bavarian Chef

Bavarian Chef  is one of the most unique restaurants that I have ever had the pleasure of working with! As the name should suggest, it is a German-style restaurant. The portions and extremely generous and the sides are unlimited. During the entire experience, you truly feel like you are in a five-star restaurant in Germany. I could not recommend dining at The  Bavarian Chef  enough!

• Caesar Salad*****
• Filet Mignon, seared and cooked to perfection*****
• Jumbo Shrimp Scampi, stuffed with lump crab meat****
• Green Beans****
• Potato Dumplings****
• Spatzle****
• German Potato Salad***

Conclusions:

You could easily make a longer trip out of a visit to Madison VA. Located right above Charlottesville VA, which is the home of 100s more wineries and breweries – there’s no wonder why the VA wine region is gaining so much national exposure right now. I will be traveling to Nelson County in a few weeks to feature even more wineries and breweries in this region. You could quite literally spend a week in the area and still not visit all of the things that this beautiful slice of Virginia has to offer!

So thank you for reading about what I suggest to be the “Best things to do in Madison VA.” I hope this inspires you to travel a little differently sometimes. Go somewhere new or eat somewhere different. The world is a big place, and sometimes the smallest regions have the most to offer!

Ebenezer House is a very fine place to stay, and unique in many ways. We have stayed there several times. The furnishings and gardens are especially beautiful.

Hood House, a few miles West on Wolftown-Hood Road is also a unique B and B, with moutain views. It is in the hamlet of Hood, nestled in the mountains.

In both places, you’ll feel totally at home.

Both are within easy reach of Montpelier, Monticello, Baldtop Brewery, and the town of Madison.

Society headquarters are in the Kemper Residence at 412 N Main Street in the town of Madison, VA. This building is the former home of James Lawson Kemper, a Civil War general and the first post-reconstruction governor of Virginia.  The lower level houses the Society’s Museum.  The Residence may be rented for special events.  Usual operating hours are 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (except January and February.)

The Society also operates the Mountain Museum at Criglersville .  This museum is located at 1128 Old Blue Ridge Turnpike, the location of the memorial chimney and kiosks erected as part of the Blue Ridge Heritage Project. The Museum is open on Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (except January and February.)

Our newest property is the Graves Mill Park at 52 Bluff Mountain Road in the Graves Mill area of Madison County. There is a replica of an old Post Office and information about people who were born and raised in the Graves Mill community.  The Park is open year-round for self-guided tours.

The Arcade Building at 124 N Main Street in the town formerly housed the Society’s Museum.  The lower level is a conference room used for Society meetings and by several other organizations.  The second floor has storage space and a workspace for processing gifts to the Society.  Window boxes in front and the garden at the rear of the building are maintained by the Madison Garden Club.

Flood cleanup continues in northeast Minnesota. Rivers still rising across the state

Crews continued working Thursday to repair dozens of roads and highways washed out across northeast Minnesota by runoff from torrential rain on Tuesday.

Rivers also continue to rise across the state. And more rain, possibly heavy at times, is in the forecast for the coming days.

More than a half-foot of rain fell on parts of northern Minnesota earlier this week. All of that water continues to swell rivers and creeks across the region.

Parts of the city of Cook, north of the Iron Range, were inundated Wednesday by floodwaters from the Little Fork River. The flooding forced some downtown businesses to close Thursday.

The St. Louis County Board held an emergency meeting Thursday morning in Virginia in response to this week’s flooding. The board approved a local disaster declaration. The county reported more than 40 roads closed due to flooding.

To the east, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said State Highway 1 remains closed between Ely and the North Shore due to a couple of washouts.

The Superior National Forest said some Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness entry points are inaccessible due to road washouts.

Officials issued an advisory for anyone traveling in the BWCA, saying visitors “should expect to encounter high and fast-moving water throughout the wilderness after recent rain events. Portage landings may be flooded, difficult to discern, and located near swift moving water. Consider the skills and abilities of your entire group when planning travel routes. If conditions exceed your group’s abilities, turn around and exit the wilderness. Remember to always wear your lifejacket.”

Rivers and waterfalls along the North Shore also are running high from the storm runoff, and state park officials urged visitors to use caution and watch for trail closures.

Southern Minnesota flooding

Flood warnings remain in place for stretches of the Minnesota, Mississippi, Crow and Cottonwood rivers in southern Minnesota.

The Crow River is forecast to crest at major flood stage in Delano this weekend. Earlier this week, the city said its public works employees “proactively placed portions of the floodwall outside of Bridge Avenue to reduce response time in case of an emergency.”

Along the Minnesota River, Highway 19 east of Henderson is closed due to water over the road. The Highway 41 crossing at Chaska is set to close Thursday morning.

All of that water will enter the Mississippi River at St. Paul, where a flood warning is also in effect. The National Weather Service says the river is forecast to crest next week in major flood stage, close to a level that would cause flooding at Harriet Island.

The city of Waterville is also experiencing flooding, and is asking residents to limit water usage. Le Sueur County Emergency Management said volunteers are needed to help with sandbagging efforts.

And there’s more heavy rain in the forecast over the coming days, which could cause flooding to worsen.

Where to Watch the 4th of July Fireworks in Washington, DC, This Year

The nation's capital puts on the ultimate 4th of July fireworks show, with Washington, DC 's famed monuments and namesake memorial silhouetted against a sky of red, white, and blue pyrotechnics. This year's show begins at 9:00 p.m. with fireworks launching from both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and crowds gather to see the dazzling display from the National Mall or from the Capitol’s West Lawn. The star-spangled lights can be seen from miles around, and one classic way to see sparks fly is from a DC rooftop where you can see a panoramic view of the city skyline.

For a DC Fourth of July to remember, here are rooftop hotels and restaurants celebrating Independence Day in style. The options are grouped by neighborhood, from the Wharf to downtown DC and beyond, spanning low-key barbecue hangouts to parties with elaborate multi-course meals and craft cocktails—all to complement views of Washington's spectacular fireworks display.

This historic neighborhood offers plenty of free scenic spots to catch the fireworks show, from atop the Key Bridge to Georgetown Waterfront Park. But The Watergate Hotel is a favorite for its fantastic front row Fourth of July fireworks view from the Top of the Gate rooftop, with 360-degree views featuring glimpses of DC icons like the Kennedy Center and Washington Monument. VIP tickets for the hotel's Independence Day party ($395 per person) and VIP Premium tickets ($595 per person) include earlier access to the rooftop from 6:00 to 10 p.m, and extra perks like a champagne toast, food buffet, and reserved seating. The general admission tickets ($195 per person) allow access from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and include an open bar with spirits and wine and beer for all guests.

Enjoy a sit-down dinner with a picturesque view at celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's CUT Above , the rooftop bar situated atop of luxe Georgetown hotel Rosewood Washington, DC. The Independence Day party runs from 6 to 10 p.m. and includes a welcome glass of champagne and a three-course surf and turf dinner with 35-day dry-aged ribeye and a whole grilled lobster from executive chef Ari Miller. The night ends with a bang, courtesy of fireworks and mini-cakes from acclaimed pastry chef Ligia Barros. All seats will have great views of the firework display, and the meal rings in at $350 per person and $175 for children aged 10 and under.

Foggy Bottom

Hotel Hive is partnering up with local fast-casual chain &Pizza for an Independence Day party from 5:00 p.m. on the microhotel's rooftop. General admission tickets to the DJ-fueled shindig are $75 and include access to an open bar and a buffet stocked with hamburgers, hot dogs, and a dessert station with strawberry shortcake.

Hotel Washington’s VUE Rooftop is hosting a July 4th party from 6 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The Conrad Washington, DC at CityCenterDC is known for its sleek design and Summit rooftop bar with downtown skyline views and sight lines to the U.S. Capitol Building. Summit will celebrate the Fourth of July with a party from 7 to 10 p.m. that includes an open bar and food stations as well as a photobooth and patriotic themed decor. Tickets for the reception-style event are $159 plus 20% gratuity, taxes, and fees. The hotel is also offering a $5,000-per-night 4th of July package that includes access to the Summit party, dinner for two at Conrad's restaurant Estuary, and more over-the-top extras.

Sceney Italian restaurant L’Ardente will once again take advantage of access to its building's air-conditioned, indoor rooftop conservatory with open-air terrace by throwing a lavish Fourth of July dinner party. The night kicks off at 6 p.m. with a three-course dinner including wine downstairs in the restaurant. The menu embraces the sea, featuring soft-shell crab tempura with cream of corn and pickled beech mushrooms, lobster ravioli with leeks and lemon confit, and halibut served with sweet peas, asparagus, and a carrot-ginger emulsion. Next, diners will be whisked 13 stories upstairs at 8:30 p.m. for L'Ardente's "dessert extravaganza" and a wine and bubbles bar amidst fireworks viewing. Dinner downstairs combined with the fireworks party upstairs costs $275 per person plus a tax and service charge, while the rooftop fireworks celebration is $125 per person plus a tax and service charge.

It doesn't get much closer to the White House than Hotel Washington’s VUE Rooftop , which offers incredible views of the Executive Mansion and the Washington Monument. The hotel's Fourth of July party is back this year with tickets starting at $175 per person, including a buffet of picnic staples like hamburgers and corn on the cob. Drinks are available for purchase at the bar. A DJ and a live band will perform during this reception-style event that runs from 6 to 10 p.m.

Ciel Social Club , perched above the AC Hotel Washington DC Convention Center on K Street, boasts glitzy decor and more importantly, a nearly 360-degree view of the D.C skyline with floor-to-ceiling windows and a wraparound terrace. The hotspot's Fourth of July party runs from 7 to 10 p.m. with a dress code of "casual chic." Tickets begin at $180 for general admission, and include three hours of an open bar, heavy passed hors d'oeuvres, live music, and party favors in addition to the view of the fireworks.

Also on K Street, Eaton Hotel 's rooftop bar dubbed Wild Days will host a Fourth of July happy hour before the fireworks festivities where you'll score half-off select drinks from 4 to 7 p.m.. During the fireworks, the terrace will be open and guests can book their spots at Wild Days to enjoy the festivities.

This new development in DC. has become a favorite sight-seeing spot in the city, and that's definitely true for the Fourth—catch the fireworks from one of The Wharf’s three piers or make a beeline for one of the neighborhood's many new-construction rooftops.

The Potomac river views from Moonraker , the rooftop restaurant and lounge atop the Pendry Washington DC – The Wharf are stunning on any day of the week. But the Fourth of July will be extra scenic, with an Independence Day party featuring themed drinks, passed bites inspired by Moonraker's Japanese-American menu, and a dessert bar. Live music and star-spangled party favors round out the festivities, which run from 6 to 10 p.m. Moonraker offers several ticket options for the event, beginning with a $200 base ticket with standard open bar, $350 which includes the addition of bottomless Veuve Clicquot Brut, or $450 for upgraded bottomless Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame.

For a Hawaiian-style barbecue and tropical drinks on July 4, turn to Todd Thrasher's rum bar Tiki TNT with multiple open-air bars and expansive rooftop views of the fireworks, the District Wharf and the Potomac waterfront. The beachy bar's Fourth of July Viewing Party runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and the $30 ticket includes a welcome drink and guaranteed seating from one of the two outdoor patios.

Located just a short stroll from the National Mall and the Tidal Basin, Salamander Washington DC is once again throwing a Fourth of July Fourth garden party right before the fireworks on the hotel's lovely and newly renovated Grand Lawn overlooking the Washington Marina. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. and include entertainment like a brass band, DJ, and a caricature artist. A raw bar will be stocked with local oysters, while a Big Green Egg grill station will be fired up alongside an ice cream bar. Tickets for those enjoying an open bar presented by Woodford Reserve and Moët & Chandon are $265 per person, while tickets for adults who aren't drinking alcohol are $175 and tickets for children ages four to 12 are $75. After the festivities end at 8 p.m., head to the Mall for fireworks—or view them from the pedestrian bridge right near the hotel and the Tidal Basin.

City Cruises Washington, DC's three-hour Fourth of July Fireworks Dinner cruise will set sail from the Wharf's Pier 4, floating along the Potomac from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The voyage includes a three-course dinner with menu options like za'atar steak or chili-rubbed salmon and a soundtrack by a DJ, with tickets starting at $275 per person.

Hip AdMo hotel The LINE DC is throwing a Fourth of July party that's very on-brand, bringing acclaimed musician Brandon Woody’s band UPENDO to its rooftop for live music and a view of the fireworks display. Entry for the event is free for all with an RSVP, with preferred seating reserved for hotel guests. An a la carte menu pairs hot dogs with fancy cocktails and popsicles to beat the heat. The LINE DC's party will run from 6 to 10 p.m., with live music until 9:00.

The faux-grass-covered Hi-Lawn sits on top of Union Market

Located five stories above Union Market's Hotel Nell, Treehouse aims to transport guests to a Tulum state of mind thanks to its jungle-inspired design and menu with dishes like Yucatán chicken tacos. The rooftop lounge will go all out for the Fourth of July with craft cocktails and a DJ, starting at 7 p.m. Reserve a spot in advance : food and beverage minimum-reservations begin at $50 for an indoor table, $75 for table seating outdoors and $125 for outdoor patio seating.

Hi-Lawn , the gigantic rooftop bar above Union Market, goes all out for the Fourth of July weekend with lawn games and boozy snow cones. The free-to-attend party begins at 2 p.m. and runs until 11:00, with limited table reservations available on Resy starting at 5 p.m., and first-come first-served seating on the turf lawn all night. In addition to boozy and non-alcoholic snow cones from a shaved ice machine, the grill will be fired up for hot dogs, brats, and burgers. The bar will serve draft cocktails like tropical rum-spiked Hi-Waiian Punch, strawberry guava mojitos, and spicy jalapeño margarita. Meanwhile, you can even pick up picnic baskets packed with snacks like poblano black bean dip or smoked gouda and cheddar pimento cheese, or retro coolers filled with mix-and-match canned brews, spiked seltzers, and adult juice boxes. Rooftop Hydration Stations equipped with misting fans and sprinklers will keep partygoers cool.

Alexandria, Virginia

The 134-room Hotel Heron opens in June with a claim to fame that the hotel's rooftop bar, dubbed Good Fortune, is the tallest of its kind in Old Town Alexandria. Good Fortune will capitalize on those panoramic views with its first-ever Fourth of July party. The party starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m., featuring a soundtrack courtesy of DJ Ulises Morello. Tickets include entry and a Fourth of July-inspired cocktail, ringing in at $20 for general admission or $50 for VIPs.

Some visitors to Israel have a new stop on their tours: Hamas' destruction in the south

KIBBUTZ NIR OZ – A new kind of tourism has emerged in Israel in the months since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. For celebrities, politicians, influencers and others, no trip is complete without a somber visit to the devastated south that absorbed the brunt of the assault near the border with Gaza .

Jerry Seinfeld, Elon Musk , Michael Douglas, former presidential candidate Nikki Haley , and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are a few who have visited, at times posing for photos in front of burned-out homes. Many Israelis, including soldiers and security officials, are also visiting on organized trips.

“It’s our personal story, but it’s also the story of all of the state of Israel,” said Irit Lahav, spokeswoman for Kibbutz Nir Oz, who gives many of the tours.

A quarter of the approximately 400 Nir Oz residents fell victim to the attack. Hamas militants killed more than 20 and kidnapped over 80. In the dining hall, a wall of post office boxes is plastered with stickers — red for killed, black for kidnapped, blue for released.

While it's uncomfortable to open the community to visitors, she said it's important for people to “come here and smell the burned smell of death, to imagine your friends or parents here.”

Hamas militants killed around 1,200 people as they rampaged through southern Israel, and kidnapped around 250. Health officials in Hamas-run Gaza say more than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war that followed.

Prior to Oct. 7, Lahav ran a tourism company. Now she has turned those itinerary-building skills to the kibbutz where she grew up. Her tour includes the spot in the fence where Hamas militants stormed the kibbutz, along with small details that humanize the scale of destruction, like the candy eggs that melted when the general store was torched.

Many of the kibbutzim and towns that experienced the worst destruction are closed to the public, accessible only via organized tours like those for dignitaries or celebrities, or by invitation from a resident.

Nir Oz decided that the guides must be residents. Rena Bazar, who lives with most of the community in temporary housing elsewhere, is among those giving tours.

At first, it was difficult to return to Nir Oz. She didn’t like the idea of strangers on the lawns and in the dining hall with its bullet-riddled windows. But eventually, she understood the importance of helping visitors understand not just what happened, but also what life had been like before Oct. 7.

“I want to make it less about the combat and more about the personal stories of people who were there,” Bazar said.

For visiting dignitaries and VIPs, trips to Israel have long included stops at famous religious or cultural sites, such as the Western Wall, Masada, the Sea of Galilee or the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the national Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem. The visits to the battered kibbutzim and border towns are the latest way to build support and solidarity with Israel's allies abroad.

Other parts of southern Israel are open to the public and encouraging visitors — both foreigners and Israelis from elsewhere.

The city of Sderot runs “resilience tours,” connecting groups with survivors who share their memories of Oct. 7 or highlight cultural or culinary offerings. In contrast to the hardest-hit kibbutzim like Nir Oz, most of Sderot's residents have returned.

Hen Cohen, the city's tourism director, estimated that about 200,000 visitors have come during the first half of 2024, compared with 100,000 total in a normal year. Most come via solidarity missions from abroad or are local visitors such as soldiers and police officers on educational tours.

Birthright Israel, an organization that provides 10-day free trips to Israel for Jewish Americans, said that nearly all of the 13,500 participants expected this summer will visit Sderot and the site of the Nova music festival, where at least 364 people died. These visits provide an economic and morale boost to residents, Cohen said.

The Sderot police station, where 10 officers were killed on Oct. 7 in a standoff that left the station in ruins, is a main attraction. Visitors stop at the local museum, and watch security footage of what happened on Oct. 7, then walk to the empty lot where the police station stood. Twisted metal remains. Israeli flags flutter in the wind. A sign says a memorial will be built there.

“In this dark hour, I wanted to do my part to make sure the people of Israel know that the people of the United States are with you,” former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said while visiting the site. Seinfeld later cried while talking about his own visit to a kibbutz, describing it as “the most powerful experience” of his life.

Zehava Ben Zaken, a lifelong Sderot resident, said it has taken time to adjust to seeing visitors every time she walks by. “I’m happy they come to see this place, so they can understand and stand with us,” she said.

Hearing the booms from Gaza a few kilometers (miles) away, she hoped that visitors can finally understand Sderot’s precarious security situation. “We’re totally broken,” she said.

South of Sderot, the site of the Nova music festival has become a pilgrimage site for hundreds of visitors per day. Photos of victims are arranged around what had been the main stage. Loved ones have left candles, sculptures, photos and other mementos.

Standing there helped her understand the enormity of loss of life, said Naomi Hanan, a medical student from San Francisco. “It’s right in front of your face and there’s no denying or ignoring what you’ve been hearing or seeing through the media,” she said.

In a eucalyptus grove near the site, an organization called Triumph of the Spirit offers virtual reality tours of three kibbutzim, including Nir Oz. The tours are currently only open to soldiers on official educational visits, but an English version will be available in the coming weeks for international tourists.

“I feel like I’m in Fortnite!” one soldier said as he slipped on the headset, then went silent as images of destruction appeared.

The videos were created by Miriam Cohen and Chani Kopolovich, who had created such tours of Auschwitz for a Holocaust education experience for people who don’t travel to Poland.

“We’ve made it accessible to go on this tour without damaging peoples’ privacy,” said Pinchas Tosig, who runs the tent and has 300 to 700 soldiers visit per day.

Some residents of southern Israel are looking beyond the visitors to the future.

In the coming weeks, Nir Oz will start demolishing some buildings to make way for new construction. Residents wonder how to preserve what happened while making space for new lives. Some say part of the destruction should remain. Others don’t want reminders — or visitors.

On one tour, Bazar pointed out the safe room where she spent hours hiding on Oct. 7. Her home was mostly spared. Others were burned. She doesn’t want the destruction to remain inside Nir Oz and hopes any future memorial will be elsewhere.

“I don’t want any child to be impacted by the ruins,” she said. “Our cemetery is full. Isn’t that memorial enough?”
