Rayagada is a mineral-rich district in the southern part of the state of Odisha, in India. The city Rayagada is its headquarters. Rayagada district got the status of a separate district with effect from 2 nd October 1992. The population of this district consists mainly of tribals. The Kondhas or Kondhs form the majority of the population followed by Source. Apart from Odia, several Adivasi languages like Kui, Kondha, Soura are spoken by the indigenous population of the district.

The District occupies a total area of 7,584.7 km 2 . Rayagada is divided into eleven blocks.

In the third century BC, during the reign of Ashoka the Great, Rayagada District was covered under Kalinga empire. Bhojpur Rock inscription in Brahmi of Rastrik King Mandhata adds some facts about the history of the Rayagada District. Later on, the Rastriks were defeated by Kharvela During Ganga Vansi and Surya Vansi Kings, it was under Dadarnab Dev of Gudari Kataka. A rock inscription found at Pataleswar temple in Brahmi script provides evidence to this effect.

As part of the extension plan of districts in Odisha state, On 2 nd October 1992, Rayagada District was carved out of the erstwhile Koraput district.

The presiding deity of Rayagada, Maa Majhghariani, is known as Majji Gowri in A.P. Originally a tribal deity, she is considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. In the 4 th century AD, when Emperor Samudragupta invaded this area, the local ruler was able to successfully defend his kingdom with the blessings of this Goddess. In the 14 th century, a temple was built at the exact center of a fort(Majhi Ghariani literally means occupant of the central house) and that is how she acquired this name.

Southwest Monsoon May Arrive Early In Odisha; Check IMD Forecast

Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Odisha in the next 4-5 days, before its usual date of June 12, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Karnataka, some parts of south Maharashtra, Goa, remaining parts Rayalaseema, Telangana & Coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha, some more parts of Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal during next 4-5 days,” it said.

Southwest monsoon has already covered parts of central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, the regional centre here has issued yellow warning of heatwave for Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Bargarh, Nuapada, and Kandhamal on June 4-5. Hot and humid weather may also prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts from June 4 to June 7.

It has also warned of thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri on June 6, and Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur on June 7.

While there will be no large change in the day temperature during the next 24 hours, mercury levels may gradually rise by 2-3 degree Celsius at many places in the state during the subsequent 4 days, it added.

Odisha Assembly Results 2024 Live : The assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Odisha were conducted simultaneously across four phases from May 13 to June 1. Odisha, which has 21 Lok Sabha seats, includes constituencies reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates. In the 2019 elections, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Naveen Patnaik, won 12 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured eight, and the Indian National Congress (INC) managed to win just one seat.

In the Odisha Assembly, which comprises 147 seats, a majority is achieved with 74 seats. In the 2019 Odisha Assembly Election, the BJD secured a decisive victory by winning 113 seats, thereby maintaining its governance of the state. The BJP became the principal opposition party with 23 seats in the Assembly. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJD won 12 seats, the BJP secured 8 seats, and the INC obtained 1 seat.

The main political parties in contention are Biju Janata Dal, contesting 147 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party, also contesting 147 seats, Indian National Congress, contesting 145 seats, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), contesting 7 seats. Odisha's Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, has held office for over 24 years.

Several exit polls released on June 1 predicted a BJP majority in the Odisha Lok Sabha Elections 2024. According to News18's exit poll, the BJD is projected to win only 6-8 seats, while the BJP is expected to claim victory in 15 seats. The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, parts of Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Telangana, and some more parts of Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.

As per IMD, the conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Karnataka, some parts of south Maharashtra, goa, remaining parts of Rayalaseema, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of south Chhattisgarh and South Odisha, some more parts of Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal during next 4-5days.

"No large change in the maximum temperature(day temperature) during the next 24hrs and gradual rise by 2 to 3 degree C during subsequent 4 days at many places over the districts of Odisha," said IMD.
