Salar de Uyuni tour options

With the natural beauty of Salar de Uyuni and all its breathtaking surroundings, it’s no wonder the Bolivia Salt Flat is one of the world’s most popular tours. Luckily, theres an option for all travelers, whether short on time or traveling at a slower pace. Let’s take a look in more detail.

One-day tours are a great way for those who don’t have much time to see the salt flats. Due to the time restriction, you won’t get a chance to visit the incredible surrounding attractions. However, you will be far from disappointed when you leave as these tours still give you plenty of time to soak in the magic of Salar de Uyuni and capture jaw-dropping photos that you didn’t even know were possible.

One-day tours can only be taken from Uyuni. Buses arrive here very early in the morning to allow enough time for those on board to do take the tour the day they arrive. These tours start at around 10am and finish at around 5pm, allowing enough time for those on the tour to catch an overnight bus to their next destination.

The historical and intriguing train graveyard is the first stop on the one-day tours. This is followed by Colchani, the salt production site, where you will be taught the process of producing salt and visit one of the iconic salt hotels. A trip to Isla Incahuasi follows, where you’ll be able to discover giant cacti up to 10m high, incredible rock formations made of petrified coral and a enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of the tremendous salt flats.

Lunch is also served here as groups get their props at the ready for crazy, perspective photos set on the blinding white surface of the salt flats. The tour ends in magnificent fashion as you observe the sun magically set over the flats.

1 Day Tour include:

  • The train graveyard
  • A Salt hotel
  • Isla Incahuasi

3/4 Day Tour

The most popular and recommended way to discover Salar de Uyuni is by taking a 3 or 4 day tour in a 4×4 jeep. Three day tours depart from either Uyuni or San Pedro de Atacama and finish in Uyuni. The three day tour starting in San Pedro de Atacama and ending in Uyuni is ideal for those looking to continue traveling north after their visit to Salar de Uyuni. Alternatively, you can do the 4 day tour which starts and finishes in San Pedro de Atacama. This tour visits the same places as the 3 day tours but requires an extra night in order to make the relatively long journey back to Chile.

Day one is the same as the one day tour – departing from Uyuni at the same time and visiting the same places. Following a long day of exploring, you will spend the first night in one of the iconic salt hotels or salt hostels. These remarkable designs are made up almost entirely of salt blocks, from the bed and toilet to the walls and ceilings. Get yourself an early night sleep here as days two and three begin at the crack of dawn, with breakfast at 7am and 5am respectively. Across the next two days you will see everything that Salar de Uyuni has to offer. Of course, you will also be given plenty of time to capture an abundance of photos of one of the picturesque places on Earth The second night is spent in very basic accommodation beside the Polques hot springs, where you will find yourself blown away by the magical stars of the Salar.

The itinerary for those who start their tour in San Pedro de Atacama is reversed as they visit the desert, lagoons, hot springs etc. at the beginning of the tour and the salt flat at the end. The third night of the 4 day tour is spent in a basic hostel in Villa Mar village. You will wake up at 4.30 am to continue your journey, finally arriving back to San Pedro de Atacama at around 2pm.

3/4 Day Tour include:

  • The lagoons Polques hot springs
  • Arbol de Piedra
  • Valle de Rocas
  • Sol de Mañana geyser
  • Dali Desert
  • San Cristobal de Lipez
  • A salt hotel
  • Chiguana desert

ITINERARY DRY SEASON

Uyuni to mallku villamar.

Our journey begins in Uyuni, Bolivia. We meet you at your hotel or at the airport if you are flying from La Paz or Santa Cruz. We leave Uyuni behind and travel southwards through the Altiplano - the Andean highlands that stretch for thousands of kilometers - after making a short stop at the Train Cemetery just out of Uyuni.

Our drive is quite smooth on a wide dirt road that leads to several town of southwestern Potosi department. We stop at San Cristobal town, home to Bolivia’s largest open-pit mine. The town has gone through a restoration and improvement period, boasting a beautiful colonial-era church and colorful market that serves as a break on our drive.

Leaving San Cristobal we continue our drive headed southwest and stop at the hidden Black Lagoon on the way. We continue toward the ‘valley of rocks’ where we have the opportunity to walk among giant boulders shaped as anything your imagination can make of. Another attraction of the day is the ‘Anaconda Canyon” where the jaw-dropping views are unmatched.

Later in the afternoon we have the opportunity to visit another small, secret lagoon that allows for some wildlife viewing and scenic hike.

We will then arrive at the village of Mallku Villamar where we spend the night with fresh dinner/supper and a warm bed.

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: Simple room, shared bathroom, may have lukewarm shower STANDARD: Simple private room with private bathroom & hot shower PLUS: Jardines de Mallku Cueva

MEALS INCLUDED LUNCH, DINNER

Eduardo Avaroa Reserve

This morning we leave Mallku Villamar and continue our drive south headed for Eduardo Avaroa Reserve. Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa as it is known, is Bolivia’s most visited protected area and with good reason. Among the natural highlights we will be delighted with, are Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon), Desierto de Siloli, Polques hot springs, Sol de Mañana geyser field and Laguna Colorada - Red Lagoon - with its thousands of pink flamingos.

It will be an intense day but full of dramatic and otherworldly sights. It’s a remote, high altitude desert region, so accommodation options are very limited but we have lodging ready for us to spend the night and get ready for more adventure the following day.

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: Basic dormitory-style shared accommodation with shared, unisex bathroom. No hot shower STANDARD: Simple private room with private bathroom. Lukewarm shower PLUS: Hotel Tayka del Desierto

MEALS INCLUDED BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER

SPECIAL INFORMATION Accommodation is very basic to say the least on our Basic and Standard packages. The buildings are built with rock bricks from the area and are unheated. At 4500m it is a cold night combined with altitude, so it’s advised you bring warm clothes and take altitude medication if your doctor has prescribed any. It is the trip’s most basic night but most travelers are able to go through it with plenty of blankets provided and warm layers

Lagunas & flamingos

Today we continue our expedition now headed north and experience a number of exciting places along the way. For starters, we stop at Arbol de Piedra (Stone Tree, visited a day earlier if taking our Plus package). Located in the middle of [nowhere] the Siloli Desert, the Stone Tree is a quirky rock formation famous for its tree shape caused by thousands of years’ erosion.

The afternoon will be dedicated to visiting a chain of several lagoons known as the ‘Andean jewels’. The real highlight are the hundreds of pink flamingos that you can photograph up close and the pristine isolation of each lagoon.

By the end of the day we will have reached the proximity of the trip’s grand finale: Salar de Uyuni. We reach our accommodation in a small village where warm dinner and bed await.

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: Simple room, shared bathroom, hot shower in southern rim of Salar de Uyuni STANDARD: Private room with private bathroom and hot shower in southern rim of Salar de Uyuni PLUS: Hotel de Sal Tayka in northern rim of Salar de Uyuni

SPECIAL INFORMATION If you take our Plus package we will already enter the salt flats today as far as the northern rim which will allow for visiting more places the following day.

Uyuni Salt Flats & Incahuasi Island

Salar de Uyuni is probably best known for its hexagon-shaped patterns and giant cactus islands, but there is much more to see. In the northern end of the flats, where we will have spent our previous night (Plus), the awe-inspiring Volcan Thunupa offers several hiking opportunities along its base. If you would like to have a break from driving and get active, this morning we will explore this less-known area, as well as other interesting sites in along the northern rim. If you took our Basic or Plus packages, we will explore the southern rim instead, since we will have spent the previous night there

We'll have plenty of free time to have lunch in the middle of the salt flats and test our photography skills to get the best deep-perspective, fun photographs (bring props along).

We will then go across onto Incahuasi Island and here we will see the giant cacti and have the opportunity to do a second mild hike to its top. This is a great place to get a 360-degree view of the salt flats.

At the end of the day, we exit the salt flats via the village of Colchani where we have a brief stop at its colorful market before driving to the town of Uyuni where the tour ends around 6 PM.

MEALS INCLUDED BREAKFAST, LUNCH

ITINERARY RAINY SEASON

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: Simple room, shared bathroom, hot shower in southern rim of Salar de Uyuni STANDARD: Private room with private bathroom and hot shower in southern rim of Salar de Uyuni PLUS: Any of the following salt hotels in order of preference and availability: Hotel Palacio de Sal, Luna Salada, Cristal Samaña

SPECIAL INFORMATION Unlike the dry-season itinerary, our Plus package provides accommodation in the western rim of the salt flats instead of the northern

Uyuni Salt Flats

The rains falling from December to April flood the entire surface of the salt flats creating a surreal ‘mirror’ that reflects the entire sky. Thousands of people from around the world flock to Bolivia to experience the reflection created by this natural phenomenon. But don’t worry, the salt flats are so huge there is plenty of space for everyone, although it is impossible to reach Incahuasi Island and drive more than only a few kilometers from the shore of the salt flats.

The whole day will be spent enjoying the ‘mirror effect’, taking surreal photographs and enjoying a unique lunch in the middle of the flooded flats. We will await sunset to experience this unforgettable experience before we exit the flats for the town of Uyuni where our tour ends around 6 PM.

SPECIAL INFORMATION If you would like to take your time to see sunset, we advise not to take a flight to La Paz on this day. Please note that driving is impossible when the flats are flooded. Driving is done extremely slowly and accessibility to places is very limited

We never alter or skip attractions in the itinerary without explaining the reasoning behind any possible change and providing adequate proof that such change may be necessary. Therefore, you should not take the above itinerary as “set in stone” and we will not he held liable for any loss or damage that you may feel arising from such changes made
  • Please note that the itinerary differs in the rainy season from the itinerary in the dry season. We will not be held liable/responsible for failure to read this information
  • This region is a remote area that lacks the usual comforts of the modern world. You should not expect high standards of accommodation, hot water is available most of the time (according to respective package) and electricity is available for a few hours or more where possible.
  • Food is handled hygienically and it is our priority and job that you are satisfied with the limited resources available in this region. Vegetarians are welcome, but should not expect special menus as we do what we can to serve appropriate portions of vegetables and fruit in the vegetarian menu

  • The Incahuasi Island is not visited because it is where there is the largest concentration of water during the rain season.

Force majeure changes

This is a reference itinerary. The route to get to the salt flat, the places visited, the indicated order and the end time will always be subject to changes according to weather conditions, demonstrations and accommodation availability. Frequently Asked Questions

What days of the year can i make this excursion.

The tour has confirmed departures all days of the week, the whole year.

How far in advance should I book the activity?

Due to high demand of the activity, we recommend to book at least a week in advance.

What kind of vehicles are used in this activity?

The tour is made on a 4x4 (Toyota Land Cruiser) in Bolivia in a group of 6 people each.

How is the infrastructure in every refugio?

Depending on the selected option, you will have shelters with shared rooms for 6 people tops, without heating, or for 2 to 4 people, all with shared bathroom. Bathrooms with showers and also the availability of hot water will depend on the shelter. These details, as well as the possibility to add a related optional service, you can find in the “Included” section of every activity. None of the shelters has internet.

What type of sockets have the accommodations?

The accommodations have sockets type C, compatible with the types E and F. Anyway, our recommendation is that you carry an adapter to avoid any inconvenience.

How many bags or suitcases can I bring?

Each passenger may carry at most one bag or suitcase of 15 kilos which will go above the 4x4. Because it will be outside the vehicle, it is recommended to take a bag rather than a suitcase, as suitcases are fragile and could be exposed to potential damage. If you do choose to bring a suitcase, it must a maximum size of a cabin suitcase (55 x 40 x 20 cm).

How is the weather along the tour?

In summer (December to March), the temperature ranges from about 4 °C as a minimum, to 23 °C maximum. In winter (June to September) the temperature ranges from about -20 °C as a minimum, to 16 °C maximum.

We recommend to bring at least Bs. 500 per person for expenses not included in the tour, as entrances to parks, border tax, access to toilets and water.

How likely is suffer "puna" or altitude sickness during the tour?

Most of the tour is made above 13,123 ft. of altitude so it is quite likely to suffer from altitude sickness specially the first day of the tour. To avoid or reduce the general feeling of discomfort, we recommend acclimate to the altitude one or two days above 8,202 ft., drink lots of water before and during the tour, eat light meals (avoid meat) the previous days, and do not drink alcohol the night before the beginning of the tour.

What is it about the meals?

The meals are varied, and includes tea, coffee, bread, cookies and fruit for breakfast, and meat, pasta, rice, soup and vegetables for lunch and dinner. In case you need a vegetarian menu, you must mark your preference during the booking process.

What about the tour in case it rains?

In case of rain, the order of the places visited, the possibility to see the sunrise and the accommodation places are subject to change, because some of the roads might be closed. Added to the previous information, water in the Uyuni Salt Flat is an important obstacle and the Incahuasi Island (located in the center of the salt flat) remains closed. This means the Incahuasi Island cannot be visited and we enter to the salt flat only for a certain distance, so the passengers are safe.

When is it possible to see the mirror effect on the Uyuni Salt Flat?

The mirror effect occurs when there is water on the salt flat. This happens only in rainy periods (January and February) and after them (March).

Why all the restrictions to make the tour?

The tour is made in the Altiplano area, at an altitude above 9,842.5 ft. Moreover, the tour does not have health insurance and there are not health centers to treat this kind of situations in a proper manner on the route.

Is it possible to do the tour in private service?

Yes, for the 3-day tour from Uyuni we have available options with accommodations in hostels and hotels . You can check both options and book directly through the website.

Is it possible to do the tour staying in hotels instead of refugios and hostels?

4 Day Uyuni Salt Flats Tour from San Pedro de Atacama

4-day tour to the Salar de Uyuni with departure and return to San Pedro de Atacama (Chile)

Departing and returning to San Pedro de Atacama, the 4-Day tour to Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama is a classic among intrepid travelers. Working with the best drivers and accommodations available, Howlanders brings you an expedition to enjoy the marvels of Chile and Bolivia. Travel across a uniquely diverse Andean landscape, visit the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve , pass through the Salvador Dali Desert, the Polque Hot Springs, the Geyser Field, the spectacular highland lagoons, and the great Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni) , where sunrises are magical.

This tour requires traveling over long distances in a 4x4, visits to rural areas with extreme weather, and in some locations, at altitudes of over 14,764 ft (4,500 m). If you don’t want to sacrifice a bit of comfort, we advise selecting the private option for hotels when booking.

🔊 This tour starts and returns to San Pedro de Atacama. We offer another tour departing from San Pedro that ends in Uyuni .

🏘️ The tour offers hotel accommodations in private rooms or hostels. The accommodations in the hostels always provide a private room on the second night of the tour . For the remaining two nights, travelers can choose a shared or private room.

Are you ready to see Chilean wonders in just 4 days? 🤩 Below are all the details:

  • Transfer San Pedro de Atacama - Hito Cajón Border Crossing Point
  • Transportation in a 7-seater 4WD vehicle during the tour
  • 3 nights lodging (according to option chosen)
  • Sleeping bag (June, July, August, and September)
  • 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners
  • Water and soft drinks during meals
  • On private tour: Spanish speaking guide (English speaking guide available as an extra)

Not included

  • In group tour: guide not included
  • Eduardo Abaroa National Park Entrance Fee ($22 / 150 BOB)
  • Entrance to Hot Springs ($1 / 6 BOB)
  • Incahuasi Island Park Entrance Fee ($5 / 30 BOB)
  • Bolivian Border Exit Tax ($3 / 15 BOB)
  • Other required border fees according to nationality

Important information

🗻 It's important to be acclimated to the high altitude before starting the tour because the route passes through high-altitude areas.

❗ This tour includes two border crossings to access Bolivia and returns to Chile. Border crossing regulations may change, and we ask travelers to ensure they meet the requirements for entry to both countries ( i.e. health, immigration, and visas). You can find all the information about the nationalities required to apply for a visa and the necessary documentation to carry out the procedure by clicking here . The border crossing may be delayed during the outbound and return journey.

🌧️ During the rainy season (December to March) the itinerary may be modified if the salt flats are flooded and some areas such as Inca Huasi Island may not be accessible. The driver will offer the best alternative to enjoy the tour.

🚗 The tour is conducted in 7-seater 4x4 vehicles occupied by 6 travelers and the driver. The seats of the vehicle are rotated among the travelers.

🙋 The shared service tour does not offer a guide. The driver gives short bits of information in Spanish or very basic English about the places visited. If you prefer to take the tour with a guide, you can book the tour in private service.

Tour itinerary

Day 1 san pedro de atacama - verde and colorada lagoons - villa mar.

Lodging (according to the selected option)

  • Shared room in a hostel in Villamar
  • Private room in a hostel in Villamar

San Pedro de Atacama

The 4-day tour to Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama will start at 7:00 am with pick up at your accommodation. First, you’ll board the shuttle bus that will take you to the Bolivian border. There, they will stamp your passport while the drivers prepare the 4x4 and load your luggage. Finally, you’ll have breakfast and when everything’s ready, the adventure begins!

Transport preparing for Uyuni Tour

Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde

The first stop on the tour is entry to Eduardo Avaroa National Andean Fauna Reserve , where you will spend most of the day. At the national park, you’ll see Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde , located at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano. Then continue to the Salvador Dali Desert, featuring large highland lagoons surrounded by imposing mountains. An incredible introduction to the high Andean landscape.

Lagoon next to the Licancabur Volcano

Polques Hot Springs - Morning Sun Geysers

The trail continues to the Polque Hot Springs , where after changing in the small changing rooms you’ll enjoy a bath in natural thermal water that contrasts with the cold weather. The challenge will be to get out of the hot springs and brave the cold!

After a meal overlooking the landscape surrounding the hot springs, the Sol de La Mañana Geyser Field awaits. Featuring fumaroles (vents where hot volcanic gases and vapors escape) and small geysers, the Sol de La Mañana Geyser is a unique landscape that projects the power of nature.

Tourists in Polques Uyuni Hot Springs

Colorada Lagoon

Finally, you will arrive at the Colorada Lagoon , one of the most spectacular sights at the Altiplano (highlands) and undoubtedly the most photographed location of the itinerary. Take a short walk along the edge and explore this captivating place, home to three different species of flamingos. Then head to Villa Mar, where dinner awaits and a cozy bed in either a shared or private room (the type of room is chosen when booking your reservation).

DAY 2 Villa Mar - Valle de las Rocas - Hotel de Sal en Colcha K

  • Private room in Tambo Loma Salt Hostel
  • Private room in Palacio de Sal Hotel ⭐⭐⭐

Valley of Rocks and Lost Italy

After breakfast, visit Italia Perdida , natural geological formations reminiscent of the desert landscapes of old Western movies. Close by is the Valley of Rocks , a plain littered with volcanic rocks in which erosion has mold the rocks into fascinating shapes (such as the World Cup or The Camel). This is where you’ll have time to spend taking fun pictures.

Rock formations at the Valley of the Rocks

Vinto Lagoon and Black Lagoon

The route continues past an array of lagoons until reaching the Vinto Lagoon and weather permitting, a short hike along its shores. Otherwise, the group will continue straight to the Negra Lagoon (or Escondida Lagoon) where you’ll have about an hour to walk down the road to the lagoon and through the valley. This valley has a surprise! It’s full of llamas. Next, return to the car where your driver will be waiting with a table set for lunch. You’ll eat with the group and continue on your adventure.

Flamingos in the Vinto Lagoon

Anaconda Canyon and Sora Wetlands

The Anaconda Canyon offers panoramic views of the meandering river in the ravine. From the natural viewpoints, appreciate the immensity of this site. For the final stretch of the day, make one more stop at the Sora Wetland , home to an array of birds and many camelids. The diversity of the wetlands extends to the endemic flora as well.

We like this particular place because it starkly contrasts with the other slightly more arid landscapes and allows travelers to see the diversity of the Bolivian Altiplano.

Views of the Anaconda Canyon

Salt lodging

Before arriving at the salt lodge, your guide will make a short pit stop on the way. Take a break from the car in a little village that has a store where you can try local beers (yes, artisanal beers from the Bolivian Altiplano) and, technology permitting, connect to Wi-Fi. Finally, at sunset head to the best salt hotel in the area, where you’ll dine overlooking the Altiplano and rest in a private room built entirely of salt.

BONUS COMFORT HOWLANDERS💙

Howlanders' 4-day Uyuni tour from San Pedro de Atacama includes a comfort bonus for the second night. On this day, you’ll stay in one of the best salt hotels in the area and you will have a private room and bathroom : The Tambo Loma Hostel. Even if you booked a shared room, you’ll be able to take advantage of this perk!

If you'd like to enjoy the comfort of a private room both nights, you’ll have to select the option with PRIVATE ROOM when booking the tour.

💬 If you are looking for superior comfort, the tour has a third option of premium hotel accommodations. This option is also offered as a private service and includes the first and third night's accommodation at the Mallku Cueva Hotel and the second night at the Palacio de Sal Hotel.

DAY 3 Salt Hotel in Colcha K - Salar de Uyuni - Uyuni Pueblo - Villa Mar

  • Shared room in Hostel in Villa Mar
  • Private room in a hostel in Villa Mar
  • Private room at Mallku Cueva Hotel ⭐⭐⭐

Uyuni Salt Flats

Today will be an early start! Dress warmly because at 5:00 am, you’ll set off for Salar de Uyuni . After arriving, you’ll wait with the group to then experience one of the most magical sunrises in the world. Don’t forget to take out your camera and capture the special moment.

The magical sunrise in the Uyuni Salt Flats

Incahuasi Island 🌵

Next: Incahuasi Island , a place home to a unique ecosystem of giant cacti and (thanks to its elevation) is one of the best locations to enjoy the views and take pictures of Salar de Uyuni with a unique perspective. Enjoy your breakfast at the foot of the island and recharge your batteries. We’re sure that this will be one of the most memorable and delicious breakfasts you’ve ever experienced. Now it's time to head to the next stop: a photo session in Salar de Uyuni.

A giant cactus at Incahuasi Island

Uyuni Salt Flats - Colchani

Now that you’ve seen a good portion of Salar de Uyuni , it's time to take some photos. During the rainy season (January-March) you’ll go to the flooded area to see the surreal mirror effect, however in the dry season, you’ll go to the center of the salt flats to take some incredible pictures. You just might be amazed by your driver's photography skills.

A fun group photo of five people on a bottle of wine

Dakar Monument - Island of the Flags

The last stops in the salt flats include the Dakar Sculptures and the famous Isla de Las Banderas . When you’ve finished touring the sculptures and banderas, you will leave behind a long morning in the salt flats and head to Colchani . Colchani is a great opportunity to visit the local artisan stores and purchase souvenirs for your adventure.

Lunch in Uyuni town - Train cemetery - Villamar

After two days of lunching in the style of "meals on wheels" (all thanks to the skill of your driver) today is the day to enjoy a sit down restaurant in Uyumi Village. Thisleisurely lunch will be a welcome change to the itinerary.

After lunch, head to the outskirts of Uyuni Village, to see the train cemetery , a landscape formed by the remains of what was once a symbol of Bolivian development. Afterwards, head back to Villa Mar, ultimately returning to the hostel where you spent the first night.

DAY 4 Villa Mar - Hito Cajón Border - San Pedro de Atacama

Return to san pedro de atacama.

At 5:00 am, eat breakfast in the lodge's dining room, then head for the Chilean-Bolivian border, about a four hour journey. Upon arrival, complete the corresponding formalities and board the private shuttle bus that will be waiting to return you to San Pedro de Atacama, where you will arrive around 1:00 pm. This brings about the close of your adventurous 4-Day Tour to Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama .

Welcome to San Pedro de Atacama road sign

What to bring to 4 Day Uyuni Salt Flats Tour from San Pedro de Atacama

Keep in mind that during the tour you will be above 13,123 ft (4,000 m) sea level, therefore it’s very important to acclimatize to the altitude. Warm clothes are also essential from June to September because the weather is particularly cold at those times. Below we have included a list of essentials to pack:

  • Cash (approximately about $43 / 300 Bolivianos)
  • Warm clothes (as low as 26°F at night)
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Bathing suit
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Sunscreen and lipstick
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Toilet paper
  • 2 liters of water per person

Where does the tour 4 Day Uyuni Salt Flats Tour from San Pedro de Atacama start

The tour's starting point is in San Pedro de Atacama. If you’ll be arriving in San Pedro de Atacama from Santiago de Chile, the best option is to fly directly to Calama. Howlanders also provides the opportunity to book a private transfer between Calama Airport and San Pedro de Atacama .

If arriving from Peru, you will most likely be coming from Cuzco or Arequipa. In this case, we recommend taking a bus that crosses the Arica-Tacna border to San Pedro de Atacama. Although it is a somewhat complex combination, it is necessary to combine several buses.

Finally, you can also get to San Pedro directly from Salta (Argentina) via direct bus in about 11 hours.

Questions & Answers

What is the difference between hotels and hostels.

In the area, there are only two types of accommodations: rustic hostels and luxury hotels. If you book the tour in hotels, the service is private (i.e. only for your group) and you will have a room with a private bathroom. If you book hostels, the tour will be a shared service with accommodations in shared or private rooms according to your choice.

What are the differences between shared and private rooms in hostels?

Shared rooms have three to six beds for a group of travelers and the bathroom is shared with other rooms on the same floor. To take a hot shower on the first night, it'll cost 10 Bolivianos or $1.50. The private room has a private bathroom with hot water for both nights and it is not shared with other travelers.

What are the hostels like?

On our tour, the accommodations at the Uyuni Salt Flats are of higher quality than other accommodations in the area. Also with Howlanders, you will always be assigned a private room. The accommodations at Villa Mar are slightly more basic, due to a lack of high-quality accommodations in the area. Both accommodations have hot water and heating in common areas. For some, this may not reach the level of comfort desired, therefore we recommend booking the tour with stays at hotels. Keep in mind that this tour is an expedition to a very rural and economically underdeveloped area.

What vehicles are used for the tour?

The cars used on the tours are typically 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers that seat seven (six seats for the travelers and one for the driver). The seating arrangement might change between travelers throughout the tour.

Why doesn't the tour include a guide, is it necessary?

In our opinion, the role of a guide on this tour does not weigh heavily on the outcome and quality of the experience. This is because the most important aspects of the tour revolve around visiting sites and rely less on the information and history regarding them.

The driver is very familiar with the area and can explain some aspects of the sites throughout the tour, however, they typically don't fulfill the role of a guide and they also don't speak English. In most cases, a traveler in the group understands Spanish, and can translate for the driver.

At Howlanders, we are convinced that whether you hire a tour with a shared service without a guide or in private service with a guide, you will enjoy the experience in both cases.

Do I need a visa to cross the border?

Everyone (regardless of nationality) will need a “single migratory card" or Tarjeta Única Migratoria (TUM). This is a document you will receive with the stamp on your passport when arriving in Chile. For entry to Bolivia : some nationalities are required to obtain a visa or pay a tax at the border. At Howlanders, we recommend consulting your corresponding embassy.

Is it possible to choose a special diet: vegetarian, gluten-free...?

Of course! Don’t forget to write your dietary restrictions in the “notes” section when making your reservation. Please list all foodborne allergies, especially if you might need special/medical attention.

For vegetarian/vegan diets: high-protein foods such as tofu or tempeh will not be available, so we recommend bringing an additional supplement or snack.

What is the temperature during the tour?

From April to September the temperatures are very low. During the day temperatures reach around 50ºF (10ºC) but at night drop to 23ºF (-5ºC). The months of June, July, and August are particularly cold. From October to March, the temperature is warmer, where days often rise to 68ºF (20ºC) and nights drop to 41ºF (5ºC).

How much luggage can I carry?

We recommend not exceeding 40 lbs (18kg). Your luggage will go on top of the 4x4 and will be protected with a waterproof insulator. We recommend bringing a small bag for your camera, water, snacks, etc. You will only have access to your luggage when you are in the accommodations. If your tour includes the transfer to Chile there is no luggage limitation.

When can the mirror effect be seen?

The mirror effect is produced during the rainy season (January, February, and March). It is a phenomenon also known as reflections and it causes the sky to be reflected in the salt flat itself.

Is the itinerary modified during the rainy season?

Only if the conditions do not allow the original itinerary to be maintained, however, we will always visit the main attractions of the tour: the Uyuni Salt Flat and the Laguna Colorada. The two most common modifications are a result of:

  • Inaccessibility of Incahuasi Island due to excessive flooding in the surrounding area.
  • Inability to cross the Hito-Cajones border (requires modifying part of the first and fourth day's itinerary)

Can I get altitude sickness during the tour?

Due to the high altitude of the Salar, altitude illness is a possibility. That is why Howlanders recommends staying a day or two in San Pedro de Atacama to get your body used to the altitude. We recommend drinking a lot of water, eating lightly, avoiding alcoholic drinks, and taking pills for altitude sickness (if you think you'll need them). Although no physical exertion is required during the tour, in some areas you will be close to 16,400 ft (5,000 m) above sea level, so it is important to acclimatize to the altitude before starting the tour.
