Review – Trek Procaliber 8
Procaliber performance, entry-level price
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M11Trek7-750x484.jpg)
Just over a year ago our test riders tossed a leg over the highly anticipated Trek Procaliber 9.9 SL, a bike built with all the best carbon parts Bontrager had to offer and a complete weight (with pedals) of just 20 pounds. The bike was a rocket ship, and if it had wings, it would likely blast right through the stratosphere. It was, and still is, a cross-country rider’s dream bike—and that was sort of its only downfall. To most, the high-performance machine was an out-of-reach price tag, unless you were a sponsored racer. Luckily, Trek is quite aware of this and offers its flagship cross-country hardtail with multiple build packages, bringing the cost down to a much more approachable price. The Procaliber 8 has an aluminum frame, drastically reducing its MSRP while still providing racers with top-notch performance. So, the final question remains: can this aluminum cross-country hardtail hold its own against a sea of eager race bikes? Let’s find out.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M8Trek1_FLOAT-750x577.jpg)
The Procaliber 8 is ideal for riders interested in cross-country riding who don’t want to go all in with a top-dollar carbon fiber machine. This bike is also well suited for kids looking to join their local high school mountain bike team due to its reasonable price. The Procaliber is a hardtail, so it’s not likely to be the choice of a rider who prefers gravity-fed technical terrain, but it could suit riders of all levels and ages who ride on dirt roads, racecourses and any local singletrack.
WHAT IS IT MADE FROM?
The Procaliber 8 has an aluminum frame with a hidden trick up its sleeve. What sets the Procaliber apart from any other hardtail is its IsoSpeed decoupler. Trek’s IsoSpeed decoupler was first designed for its road racing team, allowing the bikes to travel over rough cobblestone streets with relative ease and comfort. The technology was then transferred into the mountain bike line and trickled down to even the most entry-level Procaliber. Trek also designed the Procaliber with Boost hub spacing, internal dropper-post routing and an extended range of frame sizes, from 15.5 inches to 21.5 inches. Trek also uses its Smart Wheel Size system, which places 27.5-inch wheels on the 15.5-inch Procaliber frames, while 17.5-inch-and-up frames receive 29-inch wheels.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M8Trek2-750x510.jpg)
Trek, wanting to keep the Procaliber 8 at an affordable price, was limited as to the parts it could use, but the engineers managed to put together a build kit that spent money where it counts. Our test bike featured an XT rear derailleur, along with an SLX front derailleur and shifters. Trek then spec’d a Race Face Next R crankset with double rings, resulting in a super-low range. We’re talking about a small, 26-tooth front ring with a 42-tooth cassette out back. The bike has a RockShox Reba fork with a remote lockout and a cross-country-inspired cockpit with a 90-millimeter stem and 720-millimeter handlebars.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M8Trek5-750x475.jpg)
HOW DOES IT PERFORM?
Setting up: It takes little effort to get the Procaliber ready to hit the trails. We pumped up the air chamber in our RockShox Reba to the recommended pressure printed on the lower left fork leg, which put us right around 25-percent sag. We then adjusted our rebound accordingly. The IsoSpeed decoupler requires zero attention, making setup on this bike a breeze.
Moving out: The Procaliber screams cross-country with its long stem and narrow bars. Out on the trail, the bike handles well thanks to Trek’s G2 geometry. The idea behind G2 was to use a custom offset fork to provide precise handling at low speed without compromising high-speed stability. Where the Procaliber really shines is over chattery small bumps that would normally beat up a hardtail rider. The IsoSpeed decoupler is no gimmick and does an excellent job of damping trail vibrations.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M8Trek4-750x500.jpg)
Climbing: The Procaliber 8 is not a particularly lightweight hardtail; however, you’d be hard-pressed to find a bike much lighter within this price range. The Procaliber is no slouch when the trails point up and rewards riders with a smooth and fast feel. The super-low-range gearing was favored by our test riders, and while we believe 1x drivetrains are the way to go for almost every rider, many racers looking to purchase this bike will appreciate having double rings for steep climbs and sprint finishes.
Cornering: The Procaliber’s G2 geometry lends confidence to riders while cornering, allowing them to quickly dice their way around a racecourse or local trail. This is an agile cross-country bike that likes to dive into sharp turns and carry lots of speed out of them. We were quite shocked at just how well the fast-rolling 2.2-inch tires grabbed our loose Southern California soil.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M11Trek10-750x500.jpg)
Descending: It quickly became apparent that the Procaliber was made for speeding its way up climbs and traveling fast through flat sections. That doesn’t mean the Procaliber is not a capable descender, but riders will need to approach downhill trails with more caution. The IsoSpeed decoupler damps trail chatter well but should not be confused with a shock. This is a hardtail cross-country bike designed to be simplistic and fast over less technical terrain.
Braking: The Procaliber 8 comes spec’d with entry-level brakes that will bring a rider to a stop but require pre-planning and strong fingers. Most riders aboard this budget-minded hardtail will have no issue managing their speed on mellow trails, but more aggressive riders looking to challenge themselves on steep chutes may find the brakes a little under-gunned.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M8Trek3-750x503.jpg)
TRICKS, UPGRADES OR TIPS?
Right out the box the Procaliber 8 has a respectable build kit that will work great for amateur cross-country racers or riders. The bike is a little bit on the heavy side, and riders could save some weight by ditching the front derailleur and going to a 1x system. The 1x setup will also simplify the build and improve shifting performance. True racers looking for a competitive edge should save their pennies for the carbon version; however, the Procaliber 8 could be an excellent choice for a racer on a tight budget.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M8Trek6.jpg)
The Procaliber 8 could be made into a fun hardtail trailbike with the help of a few upgrades. First, a rider could install an internally routed dropper post, which would liven up the Procaliber’s descending capabilities. Depending on your terrain, a wider trail tire might allow you to dive harder into the corners; however, the OEM tires hooked up really well. Last, we would go to a tubeless setup to allow for lower tire pressures and better puncture resistance.
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://mbaction.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/M11Trek9_MOD-750x513.jpg)
BUYING ADVICE
In a world filled with high-tech full-suspension bikes, it’s nice to go for a ride on a simplistic hardtail. Riders looking to get into mountain biking and who desire to tackle rough terrain will be more than pleased with a hardtail, especially the Procaliber, as it provides a smooth ride unlike any other aluminum hardtail we’ve ridden. At the Procaliber’s price point, we would be hard-pressed to recommend a better bike for a cross-country rider who doesn’t need a flashy top-dollar machine to have fun.

Trek Procaliber 8 review
Alloy hardtail complete with IsoSpeed
Colin Levitch / Immediate Media
Colin Levitch
IsoSpeed decoupler adds tangible rear end softness; stiff frame; compact rear end
IsoSpeed only effective when seated
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://c02.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/39/2019/03/20171004-5492-clevitch-untitled-1509497026773-vdy8ct3320y1-5177829.jpg?webp=1&w=1200)
Trek is adamant that the Procaliber is not a soft tail. There’s no rear suspension to speak of nor elastomers. Instead, Trek has adapted its IsoSpeed decoupler into the XC hardtail's frame.
- Softtail shootout: BMC Teamelite vs Trek Procaliber
- Best mountain bike: how to choose the right one for you
- Trek Procaliber 9.7 SL review
Previously, the IsoSpeed decoupler was reserved for the pricey 9-series carbon fiber models, however, a few months back Trek revealed it was trickling the bump-eating technology into the more reasonably priced alloy frames.
The Procaliber 8 is the highest spec alloy version of the frame and, without bottle cages or pedals, it tipped our scales at 11.63kg /25.63lbs — not super light, but not all that heavy either.
A not so hardtail
Replacing the normally fixed joint where the top tube meets the down tube, the IsoSpeed decoupler is essentially a pivot that allows the seat tube to flex independently of the rest of the frame. As Trek puts it: “increasing vertical compliance without compromising pedalling efficiency.”
As we’ve previously reported with the higher-end carbon Procaliber, and Trek’s road bikes for that matter, the decoupler definitely adds some tangible softness to the rear end. So how does it translate to the alloy frame?
Pretty damn well!
Aluminum manufacturing has come a very long way since the bruisers of old, and engineers can shape and tune the tubing almost to the same level as carbon.
Down near the bottom bracket the seat tube has a cutout resembling what you’d expect to see on an aero road bike. I honestly doubt there’s any wind cheating advantage here, instead this is where the tube is tuned to flex and soak up some of the trail noise.
With that, you only get the benefit of the decoupler while you're seated, unlike something like the BMC Teamelite which uses an elastomer in the seatstays to absorb bumps in any riding position.
- Softtail shootout: BMC Teamelite vs. Trek Procaliber
It’s still a hardtail when you head for a rock garden or rough section, it’s still going to ping off rocks same as any rigid frame will. The real value is the way the bike handles small bumps and general trail vibrations that would otherwise make their way up to the saddle.
My local trail network is pretty rough and rocky, and on a hardtail it can really take its toll on your body, especially your lower back. While it’s still rough aboard the Procaliber, after a few hours riding I felt noticeably less beaten and bruised than usual.
We’ve previously noted on higher end carbon Procaliber frames that when the power is down at a grinding low cadence the seat would noticeably bounce underneath you. The Procaliber 8 doesn’t suffer this to the same extent, and I was only able to detect the slightest movement when I was focused on finding it.
With the vertical compliance relying on flex in the seatpost rather than the seatstays, the rear feels stiff and snappy, and no energy is wasted with increases in power.
This, in combination with the relatively compact 435mm chainstays makes the rear wheel feel as though it’s directly beneath your derriere, and the bike corners like a heat-guided missile, especially on tight uphill bends.
Modern XC geometry
The Procaliber is based around Trek’s G2 geometry and custom fork offset, which for my 18.5-inch test ride came in the from of a 69.3-degree head angle, 72.5 seat angle, stumpy 9cm head tube and low 31.1cm bottom bracket — slightly longer and slacker then its predecessor the Superfly.
Combined with the 100mm fork and a 51mm offset, the big wheeled Procaliber 8 was nimble at low speeds when things got technical, while still offering a stable, confident platform to attack corners and berms at high speed.
Based around Boost hub spacing, there’s no lateral flex to be found in the wheels, or the frame for that matter. I’m also quite happy to see Trek including the tubeless rim strips for the Duster Elite hoops in the box, all you need is valves and sealant for a quick tubeless setup.
Speaking of tubeless, the Duster rims combine with the Bontrager XR2 rubber snapped into place with a track pump and a bit of elbow grease on the first try — easy peasy. With uniform square knobs throughout, the XR2s are a fast rolling XC tire, they’re marked at 2.2-inch, but actually measured 2.36-inch mounted on the rim.
With the small knobblies they roll along almost effortlessly but there is a definite trade off when it comes to braking and cornering traction. If you throw something with a bit more substantial tread on the front, the XR2 would make for a fantastic rear tire.
At the front, the RockShox Reba RL, complete with a cable actuated lockout remote, has quite a stiff spring rate at the top of the travel. For racing this is ideal to prevent any loss of power, but without race plates something a bit more supple is appreciated.
The drivetrain is a mix of Shimano SLX and Deore XT parts, with a 2x Race Face Next R crank at the front. The 36/26 front chainrings and 11-42 11-speed cassette provide oodles of range, though a 1x system would be a welcome upgrade.
- RaceFace Next R first ride
- Shimano SLX M7000 11-speed transmission review
We're happy to see Trek spec the Procaliber 8 with a 720mm bar and 80mm stem. Combined with the geometry it allows for an aggressive position while still providing plenty of leverage to muscle the bike around.
At the back, the carbon seatpost furthers the IsoSpeed decoupler's vibration damping work, and the Montrose Comp saddle seems to mesh well with my behind.
Final thoughts
Trek has done a fantastic job trickling the IsoSpeed decoupler down into the lower end alloy frames. When the bike first arrived I was a bit worried that its effect would be diminished due to the change in frame material, but it didn't take long for that to pass. This is not a case of me-too-ism, instead, Trek has worked to tune these lower end bikes to make the most out of this technology.
It's important to reiterate that this Procaliber 8 is still a hardtail, and while the decoupler does well to take the square edge off bumps, it's not a rear shock. It's also a moving part, and will have to be periodically serviced.
If you're looking to get into XC racing, or you're in the market for a lively and super efficient hardtail but don't want to fork out for a full carbon version, the Procaliber 8 is worth a look.

TREK Procaliber 9.8 Test: Rejuvenated Hardtail
![vtt trek procaliber 8 vtt trek procaliber 8](https://www.365mountainbike.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/davide-finetto-365tv.jpg.webp)
Here is the "front" of the Trek house: a half cross country with a carbon frame (we do not find aluminum) equipped with IsoSpeed technology which leads it to be a hardtail that is not quite a hardtail. 100mm travel in 29”, let's get to know it better.
Since the last version, Trek has revised the geometry and also the aesthetics of its hardtail: more streamlined and pleasing to the eye, with a more arched and aggressive body. The philosophy is, however, of a competitive bike suitable for those looking for performance in pedaling even if the IsoSpeed technology allows you to have a more flexible vehicle when pedaling while seated. Do not expect a real shock absorber but a slight flexion of the wagon which, by feeling, gives you greater comfort.
ISOSPEED extension
![vtt trek procaliber 8](https://www.365mountainbike.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/isospeed.jpg.webp)
But what is it about? The innovative Isospeed is nothing more than a decoupler that allows the seat tube to flex regardless of the joint between the top tube and seat stay , doubling the vertical fit without compromising pedaling efficiency.
Trek mounts different components depending on the size: the M and ML frames mount a 70 mm stem, 60 mm on the S, 80 mm L and XL while on the XXL 90 mm. The size of the crank also changes (the S mounts 170mm while the others size 175mm) and the width of the handlebar (from S to ML 72cm while for the remaining sizes 75cm).
Excellent coloring and finishes, even if it is not possible to choose your own color through the Project One configurator (features not available on Procaliber). Trek's OCLV Mountain Carbon frame. The cable routing has been perfected: it is now cleaner and simpler. Also present is the passage for the dropper post.
The wheel passage has been widened and now we can mount tires up to 2.4 ”in section . The Bontrager Kovee Elite rim has an internal channel of 30 mm and is fitted as standard with 2.2 ”section tires, which however offer an abundant and interesting width.
Also interesting are the metal protections in the area of the front crown and in that of the rear disc, but also those in plastic material under the down tube and the chain guard on the chainstay.

VERSIONS AND COMPONENTS
What we have in test is the top of the range model of the Procaliber: a non-dream assembly that stops at € 3599. A choice by Trek that means how the racing world is moving towards full-suspension : in fact, Trek's hardtail models are offered for a medium-sized audience. The Procaliber entry base is the 9.5 model from € 1.849: always carbon frame with Shimano Deore 1 × 12 gearbox and RockShox Judy SL fork. Then we move on to 9.6 (€ 2259), 9.7 (€ 2979) and finally the 9.8 in test (€ 3599). The complete assembly of the bike can be found at the bottom of this test.
Trek has a lifetime warranty on the frame and one year on the paint and stickers. There is also a "discount service" in case of damage: this is the Carbon Care service, an exclusive program aimed at Trek customers that offers significant discounts in case of replacement of damaged frames, forks and carbon fiber components.
![vtt trek procaliber 8](https://www.365mountainbike.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/procaliber-95.jpg.webp)
Since the last version, there have been many geometric changes. The Procaliber has become more aggressive or, better said, modern. Taking our size ML as an example, the saddle angle has gone from 72.3 ° to 73.8 °, the head angle opens from a value of 69.5 ° to 68.8 °. The wheelbase is now 1118mm against the "old" 1113mm. This is because the reach has lengthened: from 427mm of the old Procaliber to 435mm of the new version. However, a non-extreme and well-balanced geometry remains, in full Trek philosophy.
THE RESPONSE OF THE TEST
As soon as we get in the saddle, the Procaliber has a racing nature: very low vertical and front seat angle (just think of the 90mm head tube) that make us feel very central on the bike. But in contrast we find a comfortable frame, thanks to the Isospeed system, and a weight that is not the lightest.
The frame is not very light: the declared weight is 1350gr in size M and consequently, the complete bike under test, stopped the scales at 10,2kg without pedals . The extra weight is given by the Isospeed system because the quality of the frame, and the many details taken care of in Trek style, make the Procaliber a refined and high quality product. So it's better to look beyond the pure weight data.
In pedaling it is a very performing bike: ok, it's a hardtail, but the Isospeed is a gem . If you intend the Isospeed as a suspension, you have the wrong bike because it is not perceived so strongly, there is no rear end that bobs like a full suspension, but the frame is more comfortable; a bit like traveling at very low pressures. This gives the whole an exaggerated comfort, for a purely hardtail bike, and is an aid in technical climbs making the performance better in many cases.
When you get up on the pedals, the reactivity of the frame is maximum and when seated the frame dampens small vibrations. Small vibrations that are dampened even by the bulky Bontrager XR2 , smooth and very performing rubber, even if the shoulder is not the most resistant but I liked them a lot. The position in the saddle is excellent and we feel good in push on the pedals, not noticing power loss due to the Isospeed.
![vtt trek procaliber 8](https://www.365mountainbike.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/statica.jpg.webp)
Downhill the Procaliber is an intuitive and easy to ride bike thanks to some choices in the assembly, such as the carbon rims with 30mm channel and abundant 2.2 "tires, the Isospeed system and the light weight that make it stable and decisive . It is still a front so it is not the easiest bike to ride but a minimum of forgiveness and the rear wheel is more glued to the ground than a normal hardtail.
In principle, a hardtail that lets itself be driven and not that drives us… as long as we are on the right track and equipped with adequate driving technique. Too bad for the width of the handlebar, 72cm, a little narrow in the M / L size. Trek mounts different handlebar sizes based on size but the choice to mount a 72cm on sizes S, M and ML a bit exaggerated, in my opinion. I can understand about the size S, but from M up it is a bit narrow in size and, in the first few rides, I felt like John Tomac in Durango. On the other sizes we find a reasonable 75cm.
It is worth noting the possibility of inserting a double bottle cage (very useful if the bike is used in a marathon perspective) and Knock Block technology, to avoid contact between the handlebar and the frame.
![vtt trek procaliber 8](https://www.365mountainbike.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/knock-block.jpg.webp)
The verdict HARDTAIL REJUVENATION
Trek has improved the “old” Procaliber in many ways, without distorting it. A bike that can be used in both Cross Country and Marathon optics, having characteristics that seem diametrically opposed but which, in this project, come together: namely comfort and responsiveness. Of course, in super technical races it is inferior to full-suspension, but in Marathon and XC not too technical, it can be the right way to snatch the best possible time. Too bad for the lack of a top-of-the-range assembly, perhaps in combination with the SL version (available only as a frame kit at € 2599), which forces the most inveterate agonist to upgrade to lower the scale a little. In my case, which is not too bad for the weight, the Procaliber is passed with flying colors.
![vtt trek procaliber 8](https://www.365mountainbike.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/voti.jpg.webp)
[email protected] I am a fan of everything that has 2 wheels: at a young age I practiced road and track cycling (Italian Allievi champion). At the age of 18 I passed into the cross country competing at national/international level as an Under23. Past Elite, I made the choice to take things more lightly from a training point of view, and my love for gravity disciplines was born, training me as an FCI MTB instructor and guide. Now I have made passion my profession by managing 2 MTB centers on the island of Elba (Bike Center Elba and Elba MTB), creating the FANTAmtb and telling in an ironic but professional way everything that revolves around MTB thanks to 365mountainbike and 365TV (YouTube'PULITI dentro BIKER fuori').

Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL Review – A World Cup course-conquering hardtail!

The Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL is undeniably the most world-shattering hardtail, to ever hit the industry! Its super-charged nature, redefines everyone’s perception of when, where, and how you ride a hardtail.
The Procaliber 9.8 SL is best described as a bike with an infinite depth of valour. Like an experience battle-hero, except with a newer, energetic heartbeat. Personally, I’m awfully tempted to buy this action-packed hardtail, over any other dual-suspension mountain bike. I mean, Trek clearly approached the design of this bike, with the attitude of; “Who said hardtails can’t be forgiving?!”
3…2…1… Ignite the speed… IsoSpeed!
With my first glance at the Procaliber 9.8, I couldn’t help but be fascinated with Trek’s IsoSpeed technology. The science stuff behind this exclusive feature, involves decoupling the seat-tube from the top-tube. This provides the freedom required for the seat-tube to flex according to the instantaneous force.
IsoSpeed technology delivers flawless vertical compliance within the carbon frame’s shape. Reducing fatigue on the rider. From my experience, I found there was no sacrifice in the bike’s capabilities. Confidence was on point, as was the nippy feel that you’d expect from any hardtail. I would go as far as to say that the Procaliber 9.8 SL can be used for races, that are 5 hours or longer! My max ride on the bike, was 4 hours. And even still after that elapsed time, the bike felt cushy enough to press on.
Trek’s Procaliber 9.8 frame is made from OCLV carbon fibre. Or put plainly; the type of carbon that stretches the very limit of how light manufacturers can make their mountain bike frames. To shield this carbon and keep the frame lasting longer, Trek brought in their Carbon Armour technology. Basically this technology, absorbs most of the impact coming from any unwanted projectile, that would dare to hit the direct carbon layer.
OCLV Carbon fibre, is certainly not skittish. Especially when formed in the tube shapes of the Procaliber 9.8. The carbon is built to endure the test of time. Plus, I ran a test to see just how much energy this lightweight frame will save you. So the frame weight, with all components equipped except for the wheels, is 5.5 Kg. Then you’ve got Boost 148 technology on the back wheel, which will inevitably magnify your power output. Not to mention the frame’s incredible stiffness. Now, I rode a specific trail that I would normally ride with my hardtail in 1:27:15. When I piloted the Procaliber 9.8 along that same route, I ended up riding it in 1:17:33! Seconds and minutes, don’t lie! If the frame saved me that amount of time, and ultimately energy, then all that technology is being put to good use.
Star Component: The Wheels
The Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL, featured some eye-opening wheels! Bontrager’s Kovee Pro TLR wheel-set was the topic of discussion. Made from OCLV carbon fibre, and with a rim inner width of 22.5mm, the wheels themselves proved to be balanced. What I found to also be an asset to the wheels’ superior stability was the way the engineers managed to create this wheelset with a spoke-bed off-set.
As far as experience goes, I’ve grown quite fond of Bontrager’s Kovee Pro TLR wheels. As they always deliver a gutsy, fast-paced ride, that gets the adrenalin pumping properly! The light-weight, and increase in overall bike stiffness, mean you can motor up climbs, and snap through corners with unmatched speed.
The Spec Sheet:
Frame: Super Light OCLV Mountain Carbon
Front suspension: RockShox SID RL
Wheels: Bontrager Kovee Pro
Tyres: Bontrager XR1 Team Issue
Shifters: SRAM X1, 11-speed
Rear derailleur: SRAM X01 Carbon
Crank: SRAM X1 Carbon
Saddle: Bontrager Montrose Elite
Seatpost: Bontrager Pro
Handlebar: Bontrager Race X Lite
Stem: Bontrager Pro
Brake set: SRAM Level TLM hydraulic disc
Weight: 17.5″ – 9.89 kg
The Ride – On the UCI Stellenbosch XC track.
The Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL was undeniably built for XC trail blasts! Like every XC course built, there’s always going to be a climb or two. I was lucky enough to be able to do some testing of the Procaliber on the UCI World Cup XC track in Stellenbosch. With two 2 weeks till the big World Cup event, it was I that was the fastest rider on the course. Obviously not nearly pacing as high the pro’s, but still. I managed to get a detailed feel from the bike, with regards to its XC nature.
The SRAM X1 1X11 group-set, provided a spot-on gear ratio. Admittedly, due to being an 11speed setup, the bike wasn’t the easiest thing to pedal up technical climbs. However, I do believe that the 32T chain-ring in the front supplied some relieve in making the cranks pedal “easier”. The stiffness of the Trek-made, carbon, frame, was felt through-out the climbs. I just had so much more control over the bike.
Now, let’s progress along to the single-track part of the test. Aboard the Trek Procaliber, the stem angle and original handle-bar upsweep, really stood-out to me as an asset to the handling of the bike. Especially along high berms. The bike almost naturally chose the right line, and I could simply settle, and lay down the power when needed.
The part I’ve been waiting to tell you about; the downhill sections of the track. Please note that lots of rocks were included! Let’s face it, the Procaliber wasn’t the smoothest over anything. But that IsoSpeed technology sure brings on the flexibility-absorption aspect. That being said, the bike felt like a dual-suspension, with the nimble behaviour of a hardtail. The geometry of the frame, also allowed the back wheel of the bike to move freely, therefore adding to the speed at which the bike responded to my movements. In short, I wasn’t shying away from the tougher line, just because the bike was a hardtail!
It’s hard to fully describe the eclectic feel of this hardtail. However, I’m sure of one thing.; you can’t choose a better hardtail, race bike, to tackle a cross-country MTB track with! You can power up and along any MTB track, and simply not feel the fatigue of the taxing conditions, thanks to the IsoSpeed tech. Just look; Anton Cooper chose it for the UCI Stellenbosch Epic World Cup
The Trek Procaliber 9.8 SL, is well kitted out for its price. I mean you’ve practically got the best light-weight to high-performance components that any hardtail enthusiast could ask for!
