What our guests say about Dolan

May 31, 2024
An Adventure Of A Lifetime
In planning our South Africa vacation last year, I went online looking for a safari adventure. There were many companies but eventually returned to Safari.Com’s website which offered many itineraries. Luckily, their agent, Dolan quickly contacted me and planned the perfect trip to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge. I liked his quick responses to my many, many questions. Dolan handled all reservations not only the lodge but hotels, airlines and private transportation. It was an amazing vacation. Our daughter and her family decided on a vacation to South Africa so we are all headed back again this year and Safari.Com and Dolan have again done the planning even our trip insurance. I highly recommend Dolan and Safari.Com for an amazing adventure!

Thanks to Dolan for making this last minute booking such a success. We stayed in Kapama River Lodge recently
Food, staff members from the restaurant to the tour guides. Lastly, seeing 4 out of 5 of The Big 5

Excellent Experience
The communication and organization of the trip was excellent. Shann was great and the whole experience was amazing.

Great experience working with Lisa
Great experience working with Lisa from Safari.com, provided very helpful information and came up with a detailed itinerary for our stay in Cape Town and our 3 day safari at Sanbona. Unfortunately Lisa needed to go to a hospital but the company took over the booking process and all went very smooth. We wish Lisa a quick recovery.
7-nights Safari
I made a reservation for a 7-night safari trip to two specific Private Game Reserves in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, for one of the busiest months in Kruger: August. This reservation was made at the last minute. (3 days ago). A reservation that had some special features, with choices from someone who has already done (my husband and I) several safaris in other African countries. The architecture and design of the lodges are important to us on a professional level. And the Private Game Reserves had to be the best. Anja Meyer, from Safari.com, started and completed the reservation process in 4 days, two of which were weekends. Very efficient, fast and understanding what we wanted for our week in the bush. We are "addicted" to safaris, wildlife, bush, landscapes, nature... and we love Africa and the Africans. We can't wait for August to arrive. Thank you!

My first experience a number of months…
My first experience a number of months back wasn't as I wanted. I picked up with Dolan a little after this to find when the best time to Safari was with the chance of seeing the "big 5" and he was so helpful, guiding me to July-September. With the cooler winter months being the better chances to see more wildlife and the big five. This lead me on to deal with Jayson. Jayson has pulled out all the stops, working past 9pm Cape Town time( 8pm London UK) to help meet my needs. I travel out on 6th July and cannot wait, Thank you Dolan and Jayson. Julian Bingle, London, UK.

Sara Van Coillie has been extremely…
Sara Van Coillie has been extremely helpful in making our Namibia trip fantastic! We have emails up on emails of Sara answering all my (many) questions months and months before our trip. I've had last minute questions and requests right before and during our trip and she always responds with record time and helps us out. I feel all of our needs have been met and I couldn't be happier with Sara as our travel representative! Highly recommend her! :)

Pascal John extremely helpful, efficient and knowledgeable
Pascal John was very helpful with recommendations for our Safari Booking. He responded to all our emails and txt messages extremely quickly, especially given the time difference. He also sent videos of his recent experience at the lodges which was especially helpful.

Leche was very responsive and really helpful. She found a reserve in the Sabi Sands that is perfect for our budget and our dates. We are very excited for our trip!

Shann was very helpful and was always quick to respond to any questions that I had. She provided with multiple options for each stage of our trip, and overall provided a great service. Would highly recommend!

Thanks Pascal you are amazing!
From the moment we arrived in South Africa, our safari adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of the African wilderness, we found ourselves surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kruger National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Our accommodation was luxurious yet seamlessly integrated into the natural environment, offering us stunning views of the savannah from the comfort of our private deck. Each day began with an exhilarating sunrise game drive, where our expert guide shared his deep knowledge and passion for the local wildlife. Witnessing the "Big Five" was an awe-inspiring experience that left us in complete awe of nature's magnificence. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we felt safe while immersing ourselves in the wilderness. Evenings were equally enchanting, with sundowner drinks enjoyed against the backdrop of a fiery African sunset, followed by sumptuous dinners under the starlit sky. The cuisine was a delightful fusion of local flavors and gourmet dishes, perfectly complementing the day's adventures. The sense of community at the lodge was heartwarming. The staff were attentive, ensuring every need was met with a smile, and fellow travelers quickly became friends as we shared stories around the campfire. Our South African safari was more than just a holiday; it was a transformative journey that connected us with nature and left us with lasting memories. For anyone seeking an adventure that combines luxury, education, and unparalleled wildlife encounters, a safari in South Africa is an absolute must. We left with hearts full of gratitude and a profound appreciation for the natural world, eagerly planning our return to this magnificent land.

Hamiltons Safari Camp - Information

In the early 1900s, James Stevenson-Hamilton was appointed as the first warden of the Sabi Nature Reserve. His first order of business was to announce that no shooting was to be allowed, believing that if animals were free to live in the veld, as they were before the arrival of man, they would flock to the area and lose their fear of humans. This was the start of 44 years of service to the game reserve, now known as the Kruger National Park, which today is one of the largest and most bio-diverse game reserves on the African continent.

Hamilton’s Tented Camp pays tribute to this man. The camp, located in the Imbali concession, reflects the grace and elegance of a bygone era, epitomizing the tradition of the luxurious African safari. The spacious and sumptuous lodge reflects the style of the 20th-century African safari adventure, offering unparalleled service and attention to all guests.

The intimate Hamilton’s Tented Camp offers six splendid canvas tents, all of which are en-suite with romantic, elegant slipper baths and outdoor showers overlooking the river. King-size canopy beds, lavishly draped in mosquito netting, are dressed in crisp white linens, and private verandahs offer magnificent views of the Ngwenyeni dam. Raised timber walkways meander beneath ancient Jackalberry trees and link the tents to the main lodge.

  • Hamiltons Tented Camp

hamiltons tented safari camp

Transport yourself back in time and to an era when the African safari was beheld as the epitome of elegance and style.

Reminiscent of an Out of Africa experience, a stay at Hamiltons Tented Camp is one that will remain etched in memory, much like the contribution the lodge’s namesake, James Stevenson-Hamilton, made to the national park the camp now calls home more than a century on.

Resplendent with early 19 th century nostalgia, from its old steamer trunks and pith helmets to its antique bathroom basins and hurricane lanterns, Hamiltons is a tribute to the generation whose vision has resulted in the conservation of one of Africa’s prime wilderness areas, without compromising on modern-day comforts and luxuries.

Built entirely of canvas set amidst age-old Jackalberry and Sausage trees, with high wooden platforms linking six elevated tents, Hamiltons treats guests to stunning views of the Nwatswitsonto River and offers the opportunity to enjoy spectacular wildlife and birdlife sightings. Your encounter with the Kruger bush truly is up close and personal.

Hamiltons not only represents a little slice of history. It guarantees a private, exclusive bushveld escape, unfettered by unnecessary modern interruptions and authentic in every way.

The vision of Paul Kruger, once president of the former Transvaal Republic, the Kruger National Park was proclaimed as early as 1898 as the Sabie Game Reserve. At the time President Kruger believed that the animals of South Africa’s Lowveld needed to be protected, but it took another 12 years for the expanse between the Sabie and Crocodile rivers to be declared an area of restricted hunting, with James Stevenson-Hamilton appointed the park’s first warden in 1902.

The first tour including an overnight stop at the Sabie Bridge (now Skukuza) organised by the South African Railways in 1923. Tourists visiting the park slept on the train and a game ranger would spend an evening with them around a campfire sharing interesting anecdotes about the bush.

The popularity of this tour gave rise to a range of tourist facilities in the park, including rest huts at Satara, Pretoriuskop, Letaba, Malelane and Skukuza, among other camps.   Roads were built in the 1930s to allow self-drive tourists to enjoy the park at their leisure and by 1934 about 1 200km of road were completed.

For almost 100 years, local and international visitors have had access to the park and enjoyed one of the world’s premier game-viewing destinations. Kruger is home to an estimated 1 500 lion, 12 000 elephant, 2 500 buffalo, 1 00 leopards and white and black rhino. Big Five aside, there are a myriad of other wildlife species to be admired with some 145 mammal species occurring in the park, including hippo, giraffe, zebra, cheetah and wild dog, among others.

Keen birders will adore a visit to the Kruger National Park with almost 500 bird species on the park’s list. From the brilliantly colourful displays of the Kingfisher and the distinct call of the Fish Eagle, to the Giant Eagle Owl perched in a bare Leadwood tree, you could spend your days admiring our feathered friends.

But there’s more to the Kruger than its wildlife, with almost 254 known cultural heritage sites, including 130 recorded rock art sites, 300 archaeological sites of Stone Age man and San Rock Art. Imbali Safari Lodge was in fact built on the site of an ancient African settlement.

Kick-start your day before the sun rises, dunking a homemade rusk into a steamy cup of coffee before setting off on your morning game drive with your assigned ranger.

Watch as the bush awakens around you; the dew glistens on the webs of the Golden Orb spider and Lilac Breasted Rollers flash their startling sky-blue bellies as they flit past your game vehicle.

See wild dogs laze under the Acacia trees and elephants leave their distinct trail as they chomp through the bush at a leisurely pace. Steal a glance at the leopard eating its prey high up in an old Tamboti tree, zebra foraging alongside large herds of wildebeest and impala flashing their characteristic ‘M’ as they disappear in to the thick brush.

Enjoy a traditional breakfast in Hamiltons’ comfortable dining room; a stylish affair complete with crystal water glasses and pewter teapots. Then retire to your luxury tent and relax, enjoy a Swedish massage or request a bush walk for an up-close encounter with the Kruger.

Lunch is served on the deck with beautiful views of the surrounding bushveld and the Nwaswitsontso River; the resident hippo making an occasional appearance to much applause. Guests are treated to light salads and tasty desserts before retiring to their rooms for an afternoon siesta.

Afternoon tea, served on the deck, heralds the imminent departure of your special evening safari through the Mluwati Concession. Spot a pride of lazy lions lounging casually in the tall grass and the associated warning call of nature’s tattletales, the Grey Loerie, as they inform the surrounding species of impending danger.

Sip a sundowner G&T as you watch the sky turn from the brilliance of an African sunset to a bright band of stars; the persistent call of frogs, owls and nightjars accompanying you back to Hamiltons Tented Camp for a romantic dinner on the deck, a canopy of stars watching over you.

Old brass light switches, steamer trunks and ‘turn-of-the-century’ decor keep the style traditional. This creates an ambiance of long-past explorers without deviating from being a luxury safari camp.

Modern comforts such as electricity, air conditioning and an outdoor shower the only clues that we live in a different time.

The décor is light and neutral. Completing the Out of Africa experience with teak furniture and floors, gilded mirrors and crisp white linens. The luxury tent experience is enhanced with panoramic bush and river views.

bush dining on safari

Dine on the deck with bush views or enjoy a bush picnic. The choice is yours? From fine crystal wine glasses to pewter silver water jugs, guests revel in the dining traditions of old. The sounds of the bush provide the accompaniment you need for a memorable dining experience.

Even the most discerning foodie will adore Hamilton’s international and African flavors.

A favorite is homemade baked goods and local specialties, but you’ll remember champagne breakfasts most. High Tea is served each afternoon with a delicious selection of cakes and pastries baked freshly at the lodge.

The camp experience is complete with butlers dressed in traditional colonial uniforms.
