He finally pulled it off—a quick weekend getaway in Kuala Lumpur to give his frayed nerves the much-needed rest they deserve.

Exploring the majestic rock formation inside Batu Caves was the first item in his itinerary. As he was climbing up the steps of this popular Malaysian destination, he notices the monkeys roaming around.

He goes near one to tries to pet it. As he reaches for its head, the monkey jumps, grabs his hand and bites it.

After wiping off the blood from his palm, he looks for a guide who takes him to the nearest hospital for a rabies shot. He was advised to take antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, and pain medicine for the next few days.

Doctors told him he had nothing to worry, he can continue on with his trip the same day.

But even if his trip was off to a bad start, he was still thankful for one thing:

His travel insurance paid for all medical expenses.

Who was the guy? Dunno, really.

But it was an actual testimonial posted by one of the customers of a travel insurance company which we’ll check out later.

The lesson?

Don’t touch ‘em monkeys.

Also, travel insurance is valuable whenever these kinds of things happen.

Because while we’re all hopeful that the trip will go smoothly and according to plan, sometimes, sh*t happens.

And it’s not only tourist-biting monkeys were talking about here.

Travel insurance can also provide protection for your gear/belongings, pay for trip cancellations, problems with baggage, emergency medical situations, and more.

So read on to learn everything you need to know about travel insurance. It’s a small price to pay to get protection and peace of mind for your whole trip.

What is a Travel Insurance?

It’s a contract or arrangement with an insurer to guarantee some form of compensation for a specified loss, illness, accident, damage, interruption, and others during your travels.

Put simply, it provides you with coverage for unexpected situations whether traveling domestically or abroad.

How Travel Insurance works?

Like regular insurance, it works by paying a fee to buy a policy. The policy is essentially the contract that states the types of reimbursements or refunds that your insurance can pay for.

For example, say you have a business trip to Spain. Three days before your flight, you experience chest pains and decide to get a checked by a doctor. He concludes that you contracted pneumonia through some form of bacteria.

You were advised to cancel the trip. Will you get reimbursed for travel expenses you already paid like tickets and accommodation?

Yes—if you have travel insurance.

Depending on the type of policy you purchased, expenses incurred for the trip will be reimbursed by your insurance company .

What does a Travel Insurance cover?

Travel insurance can reimburse you on the following expenses:

  • Canceled trips
  • Medical emergencies
  • Lost baggage
  • Emergency Evacuation
  • Legal costs (for unexpected incidents you didn’t cause)
  • Protection of property (gear and possessions) and more.

Types of Travel Insurance in the Philippines

While you’ll see different types of travel insurance policies out there, the two main types are Vacation Plan and Travel Medical Plan .

1. Vacation Plan Insurance

This type of travel insurance is considered to be the widest in terms of coverage. Most sub-types fall under this category. Package plan, trip cancellation, trip insurance, and the generic, “travel insurance” are considered as types of vacation plan insurance.

What coverage does vacation plan insurance provide? Here are some of the most common items covered:

  • Interrupted/Cancelled Trips
  • Medical Emergencies
  • Lost/Delayed Baggage
  • Gear protection
  • 24/7 Assistance

You’ll notice that medical emergencies are still included under Vacation Plan insurance. This is because some all-in-one policies also include it on the coverage.

However, if you only seek to have medical coverage when traveling and feel like you won’t need the rest, then the next type of travel insurance is what you should get.

2. Travel Medical Plan

Your health insurance provider usually provides only partial or zero coverage when traveling.

A travel medical plan ensures you have adequate medical assistance should the need arise when you’re away from your home country.

  • Medical Expenses
  • Emergency Evacuations

Why do you need Travel Insurance?

The answer will vary from one person to another. Essentially, however, you’re paying for peace of mind. It’s protection for your pockets.

Same reason why you get a car insurance or life insurance : It helps sidestep any headaches caused by unforeseen expenses during your travels.

Think about it: Say the guy who got bit with the monkey earlier didn’t have insurance. He’ll be forced to shell out money from his own pockets to pay for the medical expenses.

That could have affected his budget for the trip, forcing him to cancel some of the items on his itinerary to make up for the expense.

Or maybe someone fell ill back home and you need to go back ASAP. With the right travel insurance, you can reimburse the fees you paid and get back home without worrying about “wasting” what you paid for.

The same applies if your destination country is suddenly reported to experience some form of weather disturbance or natural calamities (typhoons/hurricanes/earthquakes) and you are forced to bail out. Travel insurance keeps you compensated for the expenses you already paid for.

How much does Travel Insurance cost in the Philippines?

It varies. Most will fall within the range of Php 500 to Php 3000 for a single trip (4 days to a week, based on the estimated quotes provided by each insurer. More on this later).

There are several factors that affect how much your quote will be.

These are age, type of activities you’ll do during your travel, level of coverage, destination country, length of travel, medical conditions, and others.

To give you an idea of how much travel insurance costs, I’ve pulled up some sample quotes from GoBear (a comparison website).

For travel insurance packages for trips to Asian countries (single trip):

Price range: Anywhere from Php 400 to Php 800

For travel insurance packages to other countries/worldwide (single trip):

Price range: Anywhere from Php 500 to Php 3000

5 Tips for Buying the Best Travel Insurance

Tip #1: determine what type of insurance you need.

Before choosing a travel insurance, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • What type of activities will I be doing on the trip?
  • Will I be carrying valuable possessions or baggage?
  • Is there a chance or reason for the trip to get canceled?
  • How much am I willing to pay for insurance?
  • Does this company have a decent track record?

And other similar questions. The goal is to have a nice checklist that ticks off everything you think you’ll need for the trip.

For example, say you’re a professional photographer. You’ll be traveling to Europe for a paid assignment. Since you’ll be carrying valuable (read: expensive) gear, it’s crucial that the travel insurance you get prioritizes coverage for possessions and/or baggage-related assistance.

Tip #2: Make sure it has sufficient medical coverage

Seasoned travelers will tell you that the most expensive potential money drain (if you don’t have travel insurance) are medical-related. Accidents and injuries can range from minor to serious, easily costing you thousands of pesos from your own pocket.

A good travel insurance policy should be big enough to cover both minor and major medical issues.

Also, try to get one that has separate coverage for emergency evacuation. Since you’ll be getting insurance anyway, better get the best one you can afford.

Having the option to have a helicopter fly you off to the nearest hospital during a medical emergency (during your travels to hard-to-reach locations)  or natural disaster/calamity is highly valuable and could spell the difference between life or death.

Tip #3: As with any agreements or contracts, you should always check the fine print.

Two companies might offer similar-looking plans but the other is cheaper.

What’s the deal?

Almost always, you’ll know it by reading the fine print carefully. One might be cheaper, but with it comes a slower and more painful claims process.

The speed of getting your claims can make or break a trip, so better be careful in choosing your insurance so you won’t regret it later.

Tip #4: Take advantage of your credit card perks

Most credit card companies include travel insurance as one of the perks for their travel-focused credit cards. It’s part of their “Frequent Traveler’s” package and it can prove valuable for saving yourself a couple of hundred to a few thousand pesos for travel insurance.

Check out our list for best credit cards for travel to know more which ones provide free travel insurance.

Tip #5: Know what’s not included in your policy

Again, this goes along with doing your homework as you decide on which travel insurance company to go with.

What’s not usually covered:

  • Extreme adventure activities (though some insurers provide packages for these types of activities)
  • Alcohol and drug-related incidents
  • Baggage/luggage issues due to the carelessness of policyholder
  • Pre-existing conditions (double-check with the insurer)

Bonus tip: Purchase travel insurance at least 2 days before your trip.

Most policies get activated within 24-48 hours within approval. You don’t want to head out without adequate protection activated yet. Be safe, apply and get approved early.

Check with the insurer to confirm the exact date of when the insurance will apply.

How to Claim your Travel Insurance

It’s quite easy, actually. You just need to contact your insurer via their preferred method.

They will then ask you to submit the required documents to serve as proof of the validity of the claim.

In general, it’s a good idea to provide as much documentation as you can so as to avoid any further delay brought about by insufficient requirements.

Always check with your insurance provider what they will need exactly to approve your claim as it may vary from one insurer to another.

Required documents for claiming travel insurance due to trip cancellation:

  • Documentation supporting the reason why you need/had to cancel the trip
  • Invoice of trip expenses which may include the details (what, when, where) of the trip itself, airline tickets, room or hotel accommodation receipts
  • Receipts and itemized bills for all trip expenses
  • Physician’s statement (for medical-related incidents)
  • Police reports (for stolen baggage or vehicular accidents)
  • Unused tickets

In conclusion:

Benjamin Franklin once said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”.

Travel insurance is one of those things that you need but hope you’ll never need to use. That’s just the way insurance works. Should you do, however, you’ll be thankful you have it.

Remember: Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish . A few hundred pesos for travel insurance is a tiny price to pay for protection from potentially massive expense later. Save yourself from this trouble and get adequate protection.

Hi Amiel, thanks for this. When World Nomads stopped supporting Filipino travelers early this year, we had to search for alternatives which are not as good as what World Nomads offered. This is really helpful. I just have some follow up questions: 1. Are these the “best” or “the only” providers offering travel insurance to Filipinos? 2. If the best, what was your criteria for saying that? 3. Is your list ranked from best to worst among the list of the best? 4. What then in your opinion is the best among these and why? Thanks. Gio

Note that most of the policies require you to settle your bills first, which the insurance company will reimburse you after your claim has been processed and approved. After your policy expires, your other travels will not be covered anymore unless you purchase a new plan.

But even if you fail to buy a travel insurance plan early, you can still get one from an insurance company that allows you to purchase one as late as 24 hours before your trip. However, note that travel insurance policies are not retroactive and will only cover the events after the plan is in force.

What does travel insurance cover?

Man hiking in the Philippines

This covers medical emergencies due to accidents or illnesses. For example, if you accidentally fall over and injure yourself while exploring the many tourist spots of Luzon , you can expect your travel insurance company to cover some if not all of the hospital and medicine expenses.

This covers non-refundable bookings in the event that you need to cancel your trip before it actually starts due to accidental death, injury, or a serious illness of the insured or an immediate family member.

If your mother suddenly contracts a serious disease and you have to cancel your entire trip, your travel insurance should be able to reimburse what you already paid for, including flights, hotel bookings, and Philippine tour packages .

See our popular Best of the Philippines

Bohol firefly watching night cruise at abatan river with transfers, ilocos norte laoag & paoay historical attractions day tour with transfers.

If your flight or trip gets delayed for reasons beyond your control, you can get compensation depending on how long the delay is. Note that this coverage has a minimum number of hours delay that needs to be met, and a couple of hours’ delay or less is usually not covered.

For instance, if your flight from Boracay to any of the Philippine Airports is delayed by more than 12 hours due to bad weather, the insurance company will shoulder the cost for additional meals and hotel bookings in the Philippines you need to purchase because of the delay or non-refundable tours to Philippine tourist spots that you missed.

Should you need to cut your trip short due to valid emergencies, your insurance company can help cover the non-refundable deposits, like the Cebu City tours you already paid for, as well as the cost of changing your travel plans, including booking a new last-minute flight.

This covers your transportation from a dangerous non-medical situation to a place of safety. Depending on your policy, this can cover natural disasters and civil or political unrest. If, for example, Mount Mayon erupts during your holiday in Albay , your travel insurance company will reimburse you the money you spent to get to a safe place.

See our popular Albay Vacation Packages

A comprehensive travel insurance policy usually covers the loss of your baggage and personal items that got lost, damaged, or were stolen during your travels. For example, if your airline loses your luggage on your way to visit the tourist spots of Mindanao , this will cover the costs of buying new items you’ll need for your trip, including clothes, toiletries, and other travel essentials. Depending on the policy, most travel insurance companies will only cover up to a certain value.

This is usually an added benefit to basic travel insurance policies, as injuries sustained from extreme adventures and sports are not included in the basic packages. This is useful for those who want to visit the Philipines and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, jet skiing, or scuba diving. This means that if you get injured while exploring the best diving spots in the Philippines , you’ll receive monetary assistance.

This coverage is similar to that included in most life insurance policies, but the only difference is that it only covers the duration of your travel. If, while on vacation, you figure in an accident and lose a limb, your sight, your speech, or your hearing, you will be compensated for it financially. In case of accidental death, your chosen beneficiary will receive the benefit.

When it comes to personal belongings, the most basic travel insurance only covers up to a certain value, usually excluding travel gear like smartphones, cameras, laptops, and drones. If you have this included in your coverage, you will be compensated if any of these items get stolen or lost by your airline or other carriers.

Keep in mind that the cheapest travel insurance in the Philippines may not give you the best value for money. Generally, the cheaper the plan, the fewer incidents it covers, so you need to compare policies based on their coverage and not just the price.

Is travel insurance refundable? No. After your trip or coverage is over, the policy will be terminated. Remember, you’re paying for peace of mind and security, and not claiming anything from your travel insurance is actually a good thing.

If you are a frequent traveler, it might be better for you to consider multi-trip or yearly travel insurance plans, which will cover more travel.

Those traveling with several people in their traveling party should inquire about group or family travel insurance in the Philippines to ensure that everyone is protected.

You may already be insured without knowing it. Some banks provide basic travel insurance with their credit cards and debit cards. Some airlines also include travel insurance in their airfare.

Check the fine print for health exclusions. Most travel insurance policies will not cover pre-existing conditions like asthma or allergies.

Comparing Travel Insurance Premiums for Popular Destinations

When planning an international trip, one of the key considerations is the cost of travel insurance, which can vary significantly depending on your destination. This section provides a comparative analysis of travel insurance premiums for some popular destinations among Filipino travelers, helping you make a budget-conscious decision.

For example, a short 4-day trip to South Korea can see varying insurance costs. With OONA Travel Insurance, the premium is approximately ₱325.06, offering substantial coverage. In contrast, PGAI Travel Shield Insurance sets their premium a bit higher at ₱374, with PGA SOMPO TravelJOY Plus coming in at ₱463.23. This variation in pricing is reflective of the different coverage options and benefits each company offers.

You may check out a sample price comparison per destination here:

travel insurance comparison

Moving to a different region, let’s consider Australia – a favorite destination for many. For a family plan, which generally provides coverage for two adults and children, the premiums can be more substantial due to the broader coverage required. OONA’s premium for such a plan in Australia is about ₱2,228.73. This increase in premium cost reflects the added risk and extended coverage necessary for family travel.

When comparing these premiums, consider the nature of your trip and the specific needs of your travel party. A solo traveler on a short trip may find a basic plan sufficient, while families or those engaging in adventure activities may require more comprehensive coverage. Additionally, some destinations may have higher medical costs or greater risks, which can be reflected in the insurance premium.

Remember, the peace of mind and security travel insurance provides can be invaluable, especially in unfamiliar destinations or in case of unexpected events. So, while considering the costs, also weigh the benefits and coverage each plan offers to ensure a worry-free and protected travel experience.

Why You Need Travel Insurance

The unpredictability of travel makes insurance a necessity. From delayed flights and natural disasters to medical emergencies, travel insurance provides a safety net. It covers lost passports, baggage issues, trip cancellations, accidents, and even death. Particularly with the prevalence of COVID-19, insurance acts as a crucial buffer, offering peace of mind and financial protection.

Travel insurance isn’t just about addressing the unexpected; it’s about ensuring a worry-free experience. Here are the most common types of coverage:

  • Personal Accident Benefits : This covers death and burial expenses if the insured suffers a fatal accident or permanent disability during the trip.
  • Travel Inconvenience Benefits : Compensates for expenses due to delays, cancellations, and other travel inconveniences.
  • Medical & Hospitalization Benefits : Crucial for hospital stays and medical care abroad.
  • Personal Liability Benefits : Reimburses for loss of personal items like baggage and documents.

Each of these coverages ensures that the financial burdens of unforeseen events are minimized, allowing you to focus on recovery or resolution.

Customizing Your Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can be tailored to fit your trip’s needs, whether it’s a once-in-a-year vacation or frequent international travel.

For Trip Frequency:

  • Single trip policies are ideal for occasional travelers.
  • Multi-trip policies suit those who travel several times a year.
  • Annual trip insurance is perfect for regular jetsetters, offering 365 days of coverage.

For Individuals Covered:

  • Single policies cater to solo travelers.
  • Family plans are designed for families, including members below 18 years.
  • Group plans offer convenient options for large groups, often with discount rates.

Choosing the right policy depends on how often you travel, who you travel with, and what kind of coverage you need.

Special Considerations for Schengen Travel

For those planning a trip to Europe , Schengen-compliant travel insurance is a must. Not only is it a requirement for a Schengen Visa, but it also needs to cover the entire duration of stay with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation. Filipino companies like OONA, Standard, and Malayan offer such policies, ensuring you meet visa requirements while being adequately protected.

Payment Methods and Ease of Access

The digital era has simplified the process of buying and managing travel insurance. You can pay premiums through various methods, including:

  • Debit or credit cards.
  • Auto-debit arrangements.
  • Online banking websites and apps.
  • Over-the-counter at banks and payment centers.
  • Post-dated checks.

These options offer flexibility and convenience, allowing you to manage your travel insurance from anywhere in the world.

Filing Insurance Claims: A Step-by-Step Guide

In case of an emergency or issue during your trip, it’s important to know how to file a claim:

  • Contact your insurer immediately when an incident occurs.
  • Gather proof such as police or medical reports, receipts, and other relevant documents.
  • Fill out the claim forms provided by your insurer.
  • Prepare the necessary documents for your specific claim type.
  • Submit all documents and proofs to your insurance provider.

Note : Each insurance company has its specific requirements, so it’s essential to check these in advance.

Still undecided on what travel insurance to get for your next international trip? Check out this video shared by travel blogger, JM Banquicio, where he shares his go-to travel insurance for the convenience, budget-friendly features, and overall ease of use. Be sure, however, to check the fine print so you can be assured that you have all the coverage that you need as some do not cover pre-existing conditions, and some other features. Again, the main thing here is to do your due diligence to research each package’s terms and conditions once you have your options presented to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. is travel insurance mandatory for international travel.

It depends on the destination. Some countries, especially those in the Schengen Area, require travel insurance for visa issuance. Even if not mandatory, it’s highly recommended for unforeseen events.

2. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19-related issues?

Most modern travel insurance policies now include coverage for medical expenses related to COVID-19. However, coverage for trip postponements or cancellations due to the pandemic may vary, so check the specific policy details.

3. What is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

Ideally, buy travel insurance soon after booking your trip. This ensures that you’re covered for any potential trip cancellations or other unforeseen events leading up to your departure.

4. Can I get travel insurance for a single trip if I travel frequently?

Yes, but frequent travelers might benefit more from a multi-trip or annual policy, which can be more cost-effective and convenient than purchasing a single-trip policy each time.

5. Are there age limits for travel insurance?

Age limits vary by insurance provider. Some policies cover infants to seniors up to 85 years old, and others may have different age brackets. Always check the age limits before purchasing a policy.

6. How does destination affect my travel insurance premium?

Destinations with higher medical costs or perceived higher risks (like extreme weather or political instability) may have higher premiums. Insurance providers assess the overall risk of the destination when setting premiums.

7. Are adventure sports and activities covered by standard travel insurance?

Many standard policies exclude high-risk activities like extreme sports. If you plan to engage in such activities, look for a policy that specifically covers them or consider an add-on.

8. What should I do if I need to make a claim?

Contact your insurer immediately if an incident occurs. Collect and prepare necessary documentation like medical reports, police reports, receipts, etc. Then, follow the insurer’s process for filing a claim, which usually involves completing a claim form and submitting the required documents.

Choosing the right travel insurance is crucial for a hassle-free journey. With various options available, it’s important to consider your specific travel needs, destinations, and the types of coverage you require. The right insurance not only offers peace of mind but also ensures that you are well-prepared for any unforeseen circumstances during your travels.

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for the Philippines?

While not obligatory, having travel insurance becomes crucial when exploring the Philippines. Situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area prone to earthquakes, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions, the country presents potential risks that make obtaining suitable insurance coverages a necessity. It's vital to be prepared for unforeseen circumstances and make sure you have the proper protection in place during your visit.

Here are more reasons why having travel insurance is recommended for trips to the Philippines:

Medical Emergencies : Given the geographical location of the Philippines, having coverage for emergency medical expenses is important. In the event of unforeseen accidents or illnesses during your trip, this benefit offers coverage for hospital stays and doctor's fees, offering the confidence you need to explore the archipelago.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.

Trip Cancellation: With the unpredictability of weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances in the Philippines, having coverage for trip cancellation is important for all travelers. Whether it's due to sudden illness, injury, or unexpected events, this benefit offers reimbursement for canceled trips.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost for the Philippines?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

Total Trip cost: The total amount of non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.

Age: L ike any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to the United Kingdom will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each offer varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Philippine hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses.

The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for the Philippine experience. "Cancel for Any Reason" offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring the Philippines's stunning landscapes in a rental car.

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

Emergency medical: Covers unforeseen situations like fractures, burns, sudden illnesses, and allergic reactions.

Emergency evacuation and repatriation: Covers your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-medical emergency evacuation and repatriation: Offers assistance for evacuating a destination promptly due to events unrelated to health issues. These events may include occurrences like natural disasters or civil unrest.

Are There Any COVID-19 Restrictions for Travelers to the Philippines?

The Philippine government has lifted the requirement for international travelers to show a vaccination certificate in order to enter the country. This means that anyone can now travel to the Philippines, regardless of whether they are vaccinated against COVID-19.

Here’s an overview of what you can expect when traveling to the Philippines

Do I need a visa to travel to the Philippines?

You don’t need a visa to travel to the Philippines unless you plan to stay there for more than 30 days.

Do I need a passport to visit the Philippines?

Yes. You must have a passport that’s valid for at least six months after your travel date

COVID-19 requirements

All travel restrictions related to COVID-19 have been lifted. You don’t have to present proof of vaccination,  test for COVID-19 , or quarantine yourself upon arrival in the Philippines.

Travel insurance for the Philippines covers a wide range of circumstances.

It’s important to understand that some travel insurance policies may be more comprehensive and cover more potential issues than others. The following is a breakdown of standard coverages, but you should always review a provider’s plan to ensure you’re comfortable with the coverage.

Trip cancellation insurance

When you’re excited about a trip, the last thing you want to do is cancel it. Unfortunately, you may have to cancel your trip to the Philippines due to circumstances outside your control. For example, if a close family member passes away a few days before you’re set to depart, you may have to cancel to attend the funeral.

Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for the prepaid, nonrefundable portion of your trip. This includes hotel accommodations, flights, and prepaid bookings. To qualify for reimbursement, you must cancel the trip for a covered reason. Many companies allow you to cancel due to illness, job loss, or the death of your travel companion.

If you’re concerned about trip cancellation, consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) insurance . This type of coverage reimburses a significant portion of your prepaid expenses.

Trip delay insurance

Trip delay insurance reimburses you for additional expenses associated with common carrier delays. In travel lingo, a common carrier is a company that offers transportation services to the public as part of its business model. Airlines, railroads, bus companies, and ferries are all examples of common carriers that may be covered by this type of travel insurance.

Once you purchase trip delay insurance, read the policy carefully. You won’t be reimbursed for additional expenses unless the delay lasts for a specific amount of time. For example, you probably won’t qualify for reimbursement due to a 30-minute delay, but you may qualify if your flight is delayed by six hours or more.

This type of coverage reimburses you only for necessary expenses. You can’t go out and buy a new wardrobe, but your insurance company may reimburse you for accommodations, transportation to and from your hotel, meals, toiletries, medication, and other personal items.

Trip interruption insurance

Like trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses. The difference is that it only reimburses you if you start your trip and have to end it early for a covered reason. For example, if your travel companion has a heart attack while you’re in the Philippines, your travel insurance may reimburse you for the unused portion of your hotel stay.

Travel medical insurance

Even if you’ve never had any medical problems, there’s always a chance that you’ll develop one during your visit to the Philippines. Travel health insurance covers the cost of lab tests, X-rays, surgery, and other types of medical care, ensuring you don’t have to pay the whole bill yourself.

Medical evacuation insurance

Many types of travel insurance also include medical evacuation coverage , which pays to transport you to the nearest suitable medical facility in an emergency. Let’s say you’re climbing one of the many volcanoes in the Philippines when you fall and break several bones. If you’re in a remote area, the nearest adequate hospital maybe 50 miles away.

Baggage insurance

No one wants to arrive in the Philippines and discover that their luggage is missing or damaged. Unfortunately, it’s possible for a common carrier to lose one of your bags or damage it during the handling process. Thieves also target travelers, which may leave you without your favorite piece of jewelry or the dress you purchased just for your trip.

This type of travel insurance usually covers baggage loss and baggage delays. If you bring two suitcases to the airport and only get one upon your arrival to the Philippines, your travel insurance should reimburse you for the missing bag. Note that many travel insurance plans have per-item and per-person limits.

Baggage delay coverage reimburses you for certain expenses if your bag doesn’t arrive as scheduled. This type of coverage doesn’t kick in right away, so don’t assume that you can buy a new outfit just because your bag is an hour late. The purpose of baggage delay coverage is to reimburse you for the money you spend replacing certain items. For example, if you have to buy shampoo, bar soap, toothpaste, and a toothbrush, your travel insurance should reimburse you for these expenses.

Rental car coverage

Many types of travel insurance also cover rental car damage and theft. For example, if you accidentally hit the curb while trying to park on a busy street in the Philippines, your travel insurance may pay to repair the scratch. If you get into an accident, your travel insurance may cover the cost of repairs or reimburse the rental company for the fair market value of the car, whichever costs less.

Although travel insurance covers you in many situations, it doesn’t cover every possible emergency.

  • Pre-existing conditions:   In most cases, travel insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing health conditions. These are conditions that you have on or before the date you book your trip. For example, if you’ve had chronic kidney disease for 20 years, CKD is a pre-existing condition. This type of coverage won’t pay your medical expenses if you experience a complication of kidney disease while traveling in the Philippines.
  • Risky activities:   If you plan to climb volcanoes, go skydiving or engage in other risky activities, check with your insurance agent first. Many plans exclude coverage for adventure sports and other high-risk activities, so you may need to purchase extra insurance if you’re a bit of a daredevil.
  • Known storms:   Travel insurance generally doesn’t cover you if you experience an emergency due to a known storm. For example, if there’s a storm brewing in the South China Sea, your insurer may deny your claim if you choose to travel to the Philippines anyway.
  • Foreseeable events:   Your travel insurance may not cover you if you experience a loss due to a foreseeable event. This is an event that a reasonable person could have predicted.

According to official sales data from Squaremouth , travel insurance for the Philippines costs, on average, around $197.20 for an average trip.

Our official sales figures over the past year show that our customers paid an average of $181.36 for travel insurance to the Philippines.

For basic medical coverage for your trip to the Philippines, travel insurance can cost as little as $1 per day . For a more comprehensive policy that includes trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, you can expect to pay around $9 to $11 per day for insurance.

To give you a better understanding of how much travel insurance for the Philippines cost, we got sample quotes from some popular travel insurance providers.

We used these travel details for our quotes:

  • Age: 35 years old
  • Destination: Philippines
  • Trip Length: 7 days
  • Trip cost: $2,000

This first table shows four quotes for basic travel insurance coverage.

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

To have financial protection in case your trip is canceled or interrupted, you’ll need more comprehensive coverage. For this next table, we got four quotes that show the cost of coverage which includes trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance.

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Several factors affect the cost of travel insurance:

  • Age:   The younger you are, the less it costs to buy coverage for your upcoming trip. This is because older people have a higher risk of accidents and illnesses.
  • Destination:   Some destinations are riskier than others. Insurers charge more to provide coverage for trips to those destinations.
  • Trip price:   The more your trip costs, the more coverage you need. It costs extra to extend your coverage.

To get the best travel insurance for your trip to the Philippines, follow these tips:

  • Consider what type of coverage you need: Evaluate the risks you face when traveling. If you plan to do any adventure activities, you should consider a plan that includes extra coverage.
  • Check to see what coverage you get with your credit card: If you book your trip with your credit card , you may already receive some types of coverage, such as trip cancellation and interruption. Once you know what you already have, you can then decide what additional types of protection you want.
  • Compare plans and providers: Request multiple quotes and take the time to compare them. Make sure you understand each plan and what it requires for reimbursement. To easily compare coverage options, try using our online comparison tool .
  • Purchase a policy early: If you purchase your travel insurance soon after making your initial trip deposit, you may be able to get a better deal.

What does travel insurance cover in the Philippines?

It depends on what type of policy you buy. The most basic insurance plans usually cover medical expenses, medical evacuation, unexpected delays, trip cancellations, and trip interruptions. You can also buy travel insurance that covers your baggage and your rental vehicle.

How much is Philippines travel insurance?

Philippines travel insurance can cost as little as $1 per day for the most basic policy. For a more comprehensive plan, you can expect to pay around $9 to $11 per day.

Can I use my U.S. insurance in the Philippines?

U.S. health insurance doesn’t cover medical expenses incurred in the Philippines. This includes Medicare, Medicaid, military insurance plans, and private health insurance.

The Philippines has a public health system, but non-citizens aren’t eligible for free health care. When comparing travel insurance options in the Philippines, it’s important to consider trip interruption coverage to protect yourself from unexpected emergencies that require you to end your trip prematurely.

Unexpected emergencies can disrupt even the most carefully planned trips . Look for policies that provide adequate reimbursement for last-minute flight changes or cancellations. Consider the maximum coverage limits and whether there are any exclusions based on the reasons for trip interruption. By comparing travel insurance options online, you can find comprehensive trip interruption coverage that suits your needs and budget. “By investing in trip interruption insurance, you can protect yourself from the financial implications of an interrupted trip.”

Travel Medical Insurance: Healthcare Protection Outside the U.S.

Traveling to a foreign country, like the Philippines, means you may not have access to the same healthcare coverage as you do at home . It’s crucial to have international travel insurance that includes travel medical coverage to ensure you receive the necessary care in case of a medical emergency while in the Philippines.

Travel medical insurance provides coverage for medical-related expenses, such as hospital bills and emergency medical treatments, during your trip. This type of insurance protects you from unexpected medical costs that can arise due to accidents, illnesses, or injuries while abroad.

With travel medical insurance, you have peace of mind knowing that you won’t be burdened with exorbitant medical bills if you need medical attention while in the Philippines. Whether it’s a minor illness or a major medical emergency, your travel medical insurance will cover the expenses, allowing you to focus on recovery instead of worrying about financial matters.

When choosing travel insurance, make sure to select a plan that offers comprehensive travel medical coverage specifically designed for international travel to the Philippines. Look for policies that include benefits such as:

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization coverage
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • 24/7 medical assistance and support

Having travel medical insurance not only ensures your well-being but also provides you with the necessary support and coordination in case of a medical emergency. It’s important to remember that healthcare systems can vary from country to country, and having the right travel medical insurance will give you the peace of mind to explore the wonders of the Philippines without worrying about unexpected medical expenses.

Medical Evacuation Insurance: Safety in Remote Locations

Exploring the remote and breathtaking locations of the Philippines is an adventurous experience like no other. However, it’s crucial to be prepared for any unforeseen medical emergencies that may arise in these remote areas. The challenging task of accessing medical facilities in these regions can be a cause for concern. That’s where medical evacuation insurance steps in to ensure your safety and peace of mind.

Medical evacuation insurance provides coverage for the expenses associated with transporting you to the nearest suitable medical facility in case of a severe injury or illness. By having this coverage, you can rest assured that you’ll receive the necessary medical attention, even in the most remote areas of the Philippines.

In the event of a medical emergency that requires urgent attention beyond the capabilities of nearby medical facilities, medical evacuation insurance covers the costs of transporting you to a well-equipped medical facility. Whether it’s by helicopter, small aircraft, or boat, this insurance ensures that you receive the appropriate care and treatment without delay. This coverage can be a literal lifesaver when time is of the essence.

Peace of Mind When Venturing Off the Beaten Path

When travelers venture into remote areas, they often find themselves far away from major cities and comprehensive medical facilities. These remote destinations often lack the resources to handle complex medical cases. Without medical evacuation insurance, reaching appropriate medical care can be both difficult and costly.

With medical evacuation insurance, you won’t have to worry about how you’ll access suitable medical facilities or how you’ll cover the transportation expenses. You can focus on enjoying your journey, knowing that you have a safety net in place, ready to assist you when needed. This coverage grants you peace of mind, allowing you to explore the hidden gems of the Philippines without undue concern for your well-being.

Choosing the Right Coverage for Your Needs

When selecting a travel insurance plan for your trip to the Philippines, be sure to opt for one that includes medical evacuation coverage. Check the policy details to understand the specific coverage limits, the network of medical facilities involved, and any requirements or restrictions associated with the coverage.

It’s also essential to consider the nature of your planned activities and the locations you intend to visit. If your trip involves adventurous pursuits, such as hiking in remote areas or water sports in secluded islands, it becomes even more crucial to have comprehensive medical evacuation insurance coverage.

By prioritizing medical evacuation insurance in your travel insurance plan , you can explore the stunning remote locations of the Philippines with confidence, knowing that help is just a call away.

Gear Theft Protection: Safeguarding Your Belongings

When traveling, the risk of losing or having your belongings stolen is always present. To ensure the safety of your valuable possessions, it’s essential to have travel insurance that includes gear theft protection or baggage insurance. With this coverage, you can have peace of mind knowing that you will be reimbursed for lost or stolen items, allowing you to replace them or cover the cost of rental equipment if necessary.

When choosing travel insurance in the Philippines, it’s important to select a plan from reliable companies that offer comprehensive coverage for your belongings. This will give you the confidence that your personal items are protected no matter where your journey takes you.

“Traveling is not just about the places you visit, but also the memories you create. Gear theft protection helps safeguard those memories by providing the financial support you need to recover from unfortunate incidents.”

Why Choose a Travel Insurance Plan with Gear Theft Protection?

Traveling with expensive gear, such as cameras, laptops, or sporting equipment, can make you a potential target for thieves. By opting for a travel insurance plan with gear theft protection, you can enjoy the following benefits:

  • Peace of mind: Knowing that your belongings are covered can free you from worry and allow you to fully embrace your travel experience.
  • Financial protection: In the unfortunate event of theft, travel insurance can provide the necessary funds to replace your stolen items or cover the cost of rental equipment, minimizing the financial impact.
  • Flexibility: Gear theft protection coverage can extend beyond just theft. It may also include coverage for accidental damage, ensuring comprehensive protection for your valuable belongings.

Whether you’re a photographer capturing beautiful landscapes or an adventurer exploring the diverse terrains of the Philippines, having gear theft protection as part of your travel insurance plan is invaluable.

Compare Travel Insurance Options for Comprehensive Coverage

When searching for travel insurance companies in the Philippines , take the time to compare various options to find the one that best fits your needs and budget. Look for plans that provide extensive coverage for gear theft, with clear terms and conditions to ensure you fully understand the protection you’re getting.

Consider factors such as the coverage limits, deductible amounts, and exclusions to make an informed decision. Additionally, read reviews and seek recommendations from fellow travelers to gauge the reliability and reputation of the insurance providers.

Remember, cheap travel insurance in the Philippines doesn’t necessarily mean compromising on coverage. Look for cost-effective options that still offer comprehensive protection for your belongings.

Convenience of Travel Insurance Assistance Services

Travel insurance not only offers coverage for unforeseen events but also provides a range of convenient assistance services to make your trip more convenient and worry-free. When choosing a travel insurance plan in the Philippines, it’s beneficial to consider these additional services that can greatly enhance your travel experience.

  • Live Translation : Many travel insurance companies in the Philippines offer live translation services to assist you in navigating language barriers. Whether you need help communicating with locals or translating important documents, having access to professional translators can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.
  • Alternative Accommodations: In case of unforeseen circumstances such as hotel closures or overbooking, travel insurance companies in the Philippines can help you secure alternative accommodations. This ensures that you have a comfortable place to stay , even when unexpected situations arise.
  • Lost Baggage Assistance: Losing your baggage while traveling can be a stressful experience. With travel insurance, you can rely on the assistance of your insurance provider to coordinate with airlines and track your lost baggage. They can help facilitate the process of locating and recovering your belongings, minimizing any inconvenience caused.

Investing in travel insurance assistance services provides you with peace of mind and reliable support whenever you encounter challenges during your trip. These services are designed to enhance your travel experience by providing practical solutions and reducing potential disruptions.

By choosing a travel insurance plan in the Philippines that offers comprehensive assistance services, you can travel with confidence, knowing that help is just a phone call away.

When it comes to travel insurance in the Philippines, it’s essential to choose a reputable provider that offers reliable coverage and excellent customer support. A number of travel insurance companies in the Philippines provide online services, making it convenient for you to compare and purchase the right travel insurance plan that suits your needs.

When evaluating travel insurance companies in the Philippines, consider factors such as coverage options, customer reviews, and claim process efficiency. Taking the time to find the right travel insurance provider will ensure that your trip to the Philippines is protected and worry-free.

Rental Car Protection: Peace of Mind on the Road

Choosing the Right Travel Insurance Company in the Philippines

The importance of travel insurance.

Traveling to different countries and experiencing new cultures is an exciting adventure that many people look forward to. However, it’s essential to be prepared for any unexpected situations that may arise during your trip. One way of ensuring you are prepared for such situations is by having travel insurance.

Travel insurance offers coverage against possible risks such as getting sick or injured during your trip, losing your luggage or personal belongings, and even trip cancellation or interruption. These risks can make your trip more expensive and stressful if you are not adequately covered.

Why it’s Important to Choose the Right Travel Insurance Company

Choosing the right travel insurance company can make or break your travel experience. Imagine getting into an accident during your trip, only to find out that your travel insurance doesn’t cover medical expenses in a foreign country. This could leave you with hefty medical bills and ruin any future trips you had planned.

It’s crucial to choose a reputable and reliable travel insurance company that provides comprehensive coverage at a reasonable price. With so many options available in the Philippines market, selecting the right one can be overwhelming.

It would help if you considered several factors before making a decision. One important factor is considering whether a particular policy suits your specific needs while keeping in mind potential risks associated with traveling—another critical consideration is customer service levels offered by different companies when it comes down to claiming compensation for losses incurred while on vacation.

Taking out travel insurance is not only important but also essential when traveling abroad. It’s equally crucial to choose the right policy that covers all eventualities without breaking the bank so you can have peace of mind while discovering new places around the world!

Benefits and Coverage Offered by Travel Insurance Companies

Medical expenses coverage.

One of the most important benefits of travel insurance is medical coverage. This type of coverage will provide you with financial protection in the event that you require medical attention while traveling.

Most travel insurance policies cover medical expenses such as doctor fees, hospitalization charges, and emergency medical treatment. Some policies may also cover pre-existing conditions, so be sure to check with your provider beforehand.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

Trip cancellation and interruption coverage is another important benefit offered by many travel insurance companies. This type of coverage will reimburse you for any non-refundable expenses if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or death in the family. Examples of covered expenses may include flights, hotel reservations, rental cars, and tour fees.

Emergency Medical Evacuation Coverage

Emergency medical evacuation coverage is particularly important if you plan on traveling to remote locations or participating in adventure sports. This type of coverage will provide financial protection for emergency transportation services should you require it. For example, if you are injured while hiking in a remote area and need to be airlifted to a hospital for treatment, your policy may cover these costs.

Baggage Loss or Delay Coverage

Losing your baggage or experiencing delays can be a frustrating experience when traveling. Fortunately, many travel insurance policies offer baggage loss or delay coverage to help ease the burden. This type of coverage typically reimburses you for any lost items or covers expenses associated with delayed bags such as purchasing new clothes or toiletries.

Coverage Limits

It’s important to note that there may be limits on the amount of coverage provided for each benefit listed above. For example, your policy may only cover up to a certain amount for medical expenses or baggage loss. It’s important to read the policy carefully and understand the limits of your coverage before purchasing.

Travel insurance can be a lifesaver when unexpected incidents occur while traveling. The benefits and coverage offered by travel insurance companies can vary widely, so it’s important to choose a policy that fits your needs and budget.

Be sure to research your options thoroughly and read reviews from previous customers before making a decision. With the right travel insurance policy in hand, you can embark on your travels with peace of mind knowing that you are protected.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Travel Insurance Company

Choosing the right travel insurance company can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not familiar with the different factors that you need to consider. Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a travel insurance company in the Philippines .

The price of a travel insurance policy is one of the most important factors that people consider when choosing a provider. While it’s tempting to only look at the cheapest options available, it’s important to remember that cheaper isn’t always better. It’s crucial to make sure that your policy provides enough coverage for your needs and budget.

You can compare prices from different providers by using an online comparison tool. Keep in mind that some providers offer discounts or promotions, so it’s worth taking the time to research and compare.

The amount of coverage provided by your policy is another essential factor when choosing a travel insurance company. Look for policies that provide adequate coverage limits for medical expenses, trip cancellations, emergency medical evacuations, and baggage loss or delay.

It’s also important to read through the fine print and understand what specific situations are covered under your policy. Some policies may exclude certain activities such as extreme sports or pre-existing conditions, while others may have higher deductibles or co-pays.

Customer Service

The level of customer service provided by your travel insurance company can make all the difference when you’re dealing with an emergency situation abroad. Look for companies that have 24/7 customer support and offer assistance in multiple languages. You can also read reviews from previous customers online to get an idea of how responsive a provider is when it comes to claims processing or addressing customer concerns.

Another important factor to consider is whether the company has a local representative in the Philippines who can assist you in case of an emergency. This can be especially helpful if you’re not familiar with the local healthcare system or need help navigating a difficult situation.

The Bottom Line

When choosing a travel insurance company, it’s important to consider more than just the price. Look for policies that provide adequate coverage for your needs, have good customer service, and offer peace of mind while you’re traveling.

Remember to read through the fine print and understand exactly what your policy covers and excludes. By doing your research and comparing different providers, you’ll be able to choose one that fits your needs and budget.

Tips for Buying Travel Insurance in the Philippines

Research thoroughly before purchasing.

When it comes to purchasing travel insurance, you want to make sure that you’re getting the best policy for your needs. Take some time to research different companies and their policies before making a final decision.

Look at their coverage options, prices, and customer reviews. Make sure you understand what is covered under each policy.

Some policies may have exclusions or limitations on certain types of activities or destinations . It’s important to know what is and isn’t covered so that you can choose the right policy for your trip.

Read Reviews from Previous Customers

One of the best ways to get an idea of how good a travel insurance company is is by reading reviews from previous customers. Search online for reviews on different travel insurance companies and read through them carefully.

Look for reviews from customers who have had similar experiences or trips to yours. If someone had a positive experience with a particular company, it’s usually a good sign that they will provide good service for your trip as well.

Choose a Policy that Fits Your Needs and Budget

When choosing a travel insurance policy in the Philippines , it’s important to find one that fits both your needs and budget. Consider factors such as trip duration, destination, activities planned, and any pre-existing medical conditions.

Make sure you’re not paying for coverage you don’t need or won’t use. It’s also important to consider the deductible amount – this is the amount you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in.

Remember that cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to travel insurance. Make sure you’re getting adequate coverage at a price point that works for you.

Additional Tips:

– Look into any existing insurance coverage you may already have (such as through your credit card or employer) to see what’s already covered.

– Consider purchasing travel insurance as soon as you book your trip to ensure maximum coverage.

– Don’t be afraid to ask questions or clarify any concerns before purchasing a policy.

In conclusion, purchasing travel insurance is an essential part of planning any trip. The best travel insurance companies in the Philippines listed above offer comprehensive coverage and benefits that can protect you against unexpected events and give you peace of mind while traveling. As travel continues to evolve, it’s vital to stay protected and informed about the latest travel policies and regulations. We hope that this list of the best travel insurance companies in the Philippines will help you make an informed decision and provide you with the protection you need to enjoy your travels to the fullest. Remember, by investing in travel insurance, you’re not only protecting yourself but also your loved ones and your investment in your travel experience.

Do I Need Travel Insurance To Visit The Philippines?

Travel insurance with a minimum coverage of $35,000 used to be required for foreign nationals visiting the Philippines. However, in May 2022, the Consulate General of the Philippines in New York issued new guidance stating that travel insurance is encouraged but no longer required.

Although the Philippines no longer requires foreign nationals to obtain travel insurance for their stay, you still need to meet other requirements for entry. You need a passport valid for at least six months and a valid onward or return ticket, as well as applicable COVID-19 vaccination proof.

If you choose to purchase travel insurance, you have options, including coverage for cancellation and medical emergencies.

What Kind Of Travel Insurance To Get For A Trip To The Philippines

There are several types of coverage you should consider when buying travel insurance for your trip to the Philippines.

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage is exactly what it sounds like — insurance that covers the cost of canceled travel plans regardless of the reason. Most insurance companies offer CFAR coverage as an upgrade or add-on benefit to a standard travel insurance plan. Standard plans also cover cancellations, but only for certain reasons. Typically, those reasons are limited to unforeseen events and things outside your control, such as a natural disaster or medical emergency.

With CFAR coverage, you can cancel for reasons not covered by a standard plan without an explanation. The freedom to cancel for any reason has become especially attractive during the era of COVID-19, as public health recommendations and requirements change frequently. CFAR coverage allows you to cancel if anything pops up that makes you uneasy about the timing or destination of your trip. Your reasons could be personal, financial or even hypothetical.

Tip: Check the U.S. Department of State’s (DOS) travel advisory for the Philippines shortly before leaving. Look for updates to the advisory level, health information and areas of increased risk that might affect your travel plans.

Gear Theft Protection

When you travel, your personal belongings are at risk of being lost, damaged or stolen. The airline could lose your luggage, or your bags could be delayed, leaving you without critical gear. A thief could snatch your suitcase or laptop from your Manila hotel room or pickpocket your wallet and passport as you sample Filipino cuisine.

Travel insurance that includes gear theft protection or baggage insurance can help you replace your stolen gear and even your travel documents. Depending on the situation, the insurance company may pay to repair or replace your belongings plus cover the cost of rental equipment if necessary after a theft, loss or delay.

You should also read through your renters or homeowners insurance before leaving for the Philippines. Many policies cover your personal belongings when traveling, not just when you are home. However, certain limits and exclusions may apply.

Tip: Make a list or take photos of everything you take on your trip. That inventory will come in handy if your bags are stolen, lost or delayed. If you experience theft, report it promptly and keep a copy of any official documentation, such as a police report, to submit to your insurance provider.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

Medical emergency insurance and emergency medical evacuation coverage may be the most important features of your travel insurance. Without insurance, stolen gear or a missed flight might cost you a few hundred dollars. Canceling your entire trip could cost several thousand dollars. However, experiencing a medical emergency overseas could cost tens of thousands of dollars — especially if you need to be evacuated.

Many travel insurance plans include $500,000 or $1,000,000 of medical evacuation coverage paired with $15,000 to $500,000 of medical coverage. As you decide how much coverage to purchase, think through your plans and itinerary. Consider where and how you will be spending your time. High-risk activities and remote locations may increase the likelihood that you will need medical care.

Remember that before changes were announced in May 2022, the Philippines required foreign nationals to obtain at least $35,000 of coverage. Squaremouth , a leading travel insurance quoting and comparison engine that has helped insure more than 2.5 million customers, recommends at least $50,000 of medical emergency coverage and $100,000 of medical evacuation coverage.

Tip: If you have a pre-existing medical condition , you may need to purchase a waiver to ensure your plan will cover it. Not all plans will cover pre-existing conditions, and those that do may need you to meet certain requirements.

Rental Car Protection

You may or may not need rental car protection for your trip to the Philippines. To decide, consider whether you plan to rent a vehicle and what, if any, coverage you already have.

Contact your car insurance agent to find out what your existing auto policy covers. Few U.S. car insurance companies will cover you when you’re driving abroad, but it’s worth checking. You should also check with your credit card company, as some card issues offer complimentary rental car insurance.

You can purchase protection directly from the rental car company. Liability insurance, which covers injuries and property damage you cause other people, may be included in the rental price. For broader coverage, you typically have the option to purchase a collision damage waiver. However, it is often less expensive to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes rental car coverage.

Tip: Consider getting an international driving permit (IDP) before your trip. Although you should be able to use your state-issued driver’s license in the Philippines for up to 90 days, many countries require an IDP. You should also research the driving laws, culture and conditions in the Philippines to ensure that you will be comfortable driving there.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Most travel insurance plans include trip cancellation insurance , often paired with travel delay and trip interruption coverage. Unlike CFAR coverage, this coverage is typically limited to certain situations. Your policy documents should spell out which situations do or do not qualify for reimbursement. Companies may also differ on how they treat cancellations related to the coronavirus pandemic.

If you cancel for a covered reason, trip cancellation insurance will generally cover any non-refundable trip costs up to the policy limit. You decide the coverage limits. When you apply, the insurance company will ask about your trip cost. Make sure the figure you provide includes all the prepaid, non-refundable expenses associated with your trip. If you say your trip costs $2,000, that is what your coverage limit will be.

Tip: If you need to cancel your trip, be ready to provide documentation. The insurance company will want to verify your reason for canceling. You will also need to provide proof of your expenses, such as receipts or itemized bills.

Flight Insurance

Though you only need flight insurance if you plan to fly, a trip to the Philippines will almost certainly require air travel. The Philippines is an island nation that lies more than 7,000 miles from California and nearly 5,500 miles from Hawaii. In many cases, you can expect your plans to include at least one connection, which increases the odds that you will miss a flight. Unless you purchased a fully refundable ticket, airlines are not always required to issue a refund or voucher.

Flight insurance helps you cover the cost of booking a new flight if you miss your original flight. You can purchase flight insurance from the airline itself or from a third-party travel insurance company. For international travel, it might be wiser to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance plan that includes flight coverage. You could miss your flight for many reasons, and some may involve costs not covered by flight insurance alone.

Tip: Check the vaccination requirements of each airport you will pass through on your way to the Philippines, as COVID-19 protocols may vary. You may need certain documentation, such as a negative test result, proof of vaccination or a health declaration form ready to present.

How Much Does Philippines Travel Insurance Cost?

The first step to finding the cheapest travel insurance is comparing costs. The age of the traveler, the destination location and the total trip cost all factor into travel insurance costs.

We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to Philippines. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to Philippines for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.

These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for a Philippines Vacation?

Follow these steps to purchase Philippines travel insurance:

  • Add up your trip costs. This will tell you how much coverage you need. Your tally should include all expenses that are prepaid and nonrefundable to ensure sufficient trip cancellation coverage.
  • Gather quotes. Gather quotes from several companies. Most companies offer multiple comprehensive plans with different terms and coverage limits.
  • Read the fine print. Make sure you understand what each policy covers. You may want to ask specifically about preexisting conditions, travel assistance, COVID-19 coverage and covered cancellations.
  • Choose a plan. Compare your options and choose the best plan for your travel needs. If you have multiple trips planned in a year, consider investing in an annual travel insurance plan.

Remember, it’s best to purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after booking your trip. If you wait too long, you may be ineligible for coverage or risk the denial of certain claims.

The Philippines Travel and Safety Tips

Although getting travel insurance is important, it’s equally important to do what you can to avoid needing it. Start by reading through the travel and safety tips below.

Coronavirus precautions in the Philippines are set by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases. In October 2022, the IATF issued new guidance . Foreign nationals age 15 or older must present one of two things to enter the Philippines:

  • Proof of vaccination. To be considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you need to have received the second dose of a two-dose series or a single-dose vaccine more than 14 days prior to your departure from your country of origin.
  • Negative rapid antigen test result. The COVID-19 test must have been administered and certified by a healthcare professional within 24 hours prior to your departure from your country of origin.

Note that a pre-departure COVID-19 test is no longer required for those who are fully vaccinated. Another recent change is that the country now requires a rapid antigen test within 24 hours rather than an RT-PCR test within 48 hours for unvaccinated individuals.

As of October 2022, face masks are no longer required except in healthcare facilities, medical transport and public transportation. Inbound travelers must only quarantine if they test positive for COVID-19 through a rapid antigen test. Quarantine protocols are set by the country’s Department of Health (DOH). The DOH maintains an FAQ page that travelers may find useful.

You can find a COVID-19 case tracker on the Philippines DOH website, along with a list of relevant updates and policies. You can also check the U.S. Embassy website for information related to COVID-19 and travel to the Philippines.

Crime and Safety

The U.S. DOS has four travel advisory levels. As of December 2022, the Philippines fell into the yellow level-two category: exercise increased caution. Noted risks include crime, terrorism, civil unrest and kidnapping, particularly in the Sulu Archipelago, Marawi City and other areas of Mindanao.

According to Statista , the most prevalent crime in the Philippines is theft, with 11,492 incidents reported in 2021. The DOS highlights other dangers, including kidnappings and physical assaults. Specifically, it notes that travelers leaving Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport via taxi or private vehicle have been stopped and robbed.

If you fall victim to a crime, you should report it to the local police at the 911 hotline. U.S. citizens should also contact the U.S. Embassy at +(63)(2)5302-2000. The DOS recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This enables you to receive important security messages and makes it easier for authorities to locate you in an emergency.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

The largest island of the Philippines, Luzon, is home to the capital city of Manila. Other popular cities include Cebu in the central Visayas island group, Puerto Princesa on the westernmost island of Palawan, and El Nido at the northern tip of Palawan. Breathtaking scenery and recreational opportunities abound near all four cities. Here are a few of the top attractions and activities for tourists:

  • Whale shark tours: Many tours offer a chance to see or even swim with the world’s largest fish. An up-close encounter is virtually guaranteed in Oslob, though some question the sustainability and ethics of the town’s setup. Other options are Donsol, on the island of Luzon, and Sogod Bay on Southern Leyte. The best months for this activity are November through May.
  • Island hopping: Island-hopping tours allow you to visit multiple islands in one day. These tours often last 8 hours or longer and include lunch. To maximize the experience, choose a tour with a recreational activity you’d like to try, such as snorkeling or canyoneering.
  • Beaches: As you might expect, the Philippines is home to several stunning beaches. Three popular destinations are El Nido’s Nacpan Beach and Boracay Island’s White Beach and Puka Shell Beach.
  • Banaue Rice Terraces: Located in the mountains north of Manila, the Banaue Rice Terraces are a marvel carved into the landscape more than 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people. The terraces are spread across several villages, including Batad. Many tours of this area are planned as a scenic multi-day adventure.

This list only scratches the surface of the things to do and see in the Philippines. The country also boasts multiple lakes, caves, parks and even underground rivers. Historical and religious sites include Fort Santiago, the Magellan’s Cross Pavilion, Cebu Taoist Temple and the Basilica del Santo Niño.

If you anticipate your trip being a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, we recommend setting aside at least 10 days. You will have no problem filling the time. Plan your itinerary well in advance, and be realistic about how much you can fit into your visit.

Is Travel Insurance For a Trip To The Philippines Worth It?

Purchasing travel insurance for a Philippines vacation is worth it if you want nonrefundable trip costs covered in an unexpected situation. Forgoing insurance or opting for a bare-bones plan could end up being an expensive decision if something goes wrong before or during your trip. A vacation here is not without risks. Theft is relatively common, and many of the top tourist attractions are heavily dependent on good weather.

Shop around before picking a plan. We recommend gathering quotes from at least three companies. Then compare not only the prices but also the coverage limits, benefits and exclusions to ensure you get the best deal and coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance for The Philippines

Does philippine airlines require travel insurance.

When you book a flight to the Philippines from any other country through Philippine Airlines, your ticket automatically includes travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage. This coverage, which starts upon your arrival in the Philippines, is complimentary but not optional. It provides up to 30 days of protection for passengers from 2 weeks to 75 years old. It includes the following:

  • Up to $35,000 for COVID-related medical expenses
  • Up to $35,000 for COVID-related medical evacuation
  • Up to $2,000 of personal accident coverage
  • 24/7 emergency travel and medical assistance

How do you know if you need travel insurance?

To determine whether you need travel insurance, you should consider three things: cancellation policies, existing coverage and level of risk. Think through everything that could go wrong and what you can afford. Between complimentary coverage, existing insurance policies and generous cancellation policies, you may not need travel insurance.

If each item you have booked — hotels, flights , tours, etc. — can be canceled for any reason without penalty, then you can forgo cancellation coverage. For medical expenses, you may be covered by your existing health insurance, and your renters or homeowners insurance may cover any theft of your personal belongings. Some credit cards even offer complimentary travel insurance, including rental car coverage.

Which travel insurance policies cover COVID-19?

Standard travel insurance policies may or may not cover a COVID-related cancellation or delay, but most will provide medical coverage if you contract COVID-19 while traveling. Cancel for any reason (CFAR) policies will cover you if you need to cancel your trip due to COVID-19 — whether because you are sick or because of a lockdown or outbreak.

To ensure your travel insurance covers COVID-19, read through any policy documents carefully or speak to an agent. Ask about terms that may apply, such as a pandemic or foreseeable risk exclusion.

How much is travel insurance?

Travel insurance can cost anywhere from 4% to 12% of the total cost of your trip, according to Generali . However, the exact cost will vary depending on several factors, including the length and location of your trip. Your age and health may also play a role. We recommend gathering quotes from multiple companies to ensure you get the best possible rate.

Some insurance companies, such as Nationwide and Allianz, offer annual travel insurance plans that are more affordable than purchasing separate policies for each trip. You may also qualify for free but limited coverage through the airline or your credit card.

Reasons why getting travel insurance is essential

  • Getting assistance abroad. Itñ€ℱs like having a helpline when and where you need it. In a foreign country, the language barrier can be quite the deal-breaker. Travel Insurance makes sure that you get the best and highest-quality assistance regardless of your location, in terms you can understand.
  • Spares you from costly unexpected expenses. Getting medical treatment abroad can burn a serious hole in your pocket. With a travel insurance policy in hand, fees from getting medical attention will be handled by your coverage.

Travel insurance for visitors to The Philippines is not a mandatory entry requirement.  It may, therefore, be tempting to skip on the extra cost and save yourself some extra beer money, especially if you’re backpacking through the Philippines. However, do think carefully about that because things can and do go wrong for travelers the the ‘Pines.

As well as occasional volcanic activity & bouts of tropical illness, the Philippines does have a reputation for dangerous crime. Violent crime, civil unrest, piracy, and the risk of kidnappings are not unheard of in The Philippines. Most of the places you’re likely to visit are perfectly safe for tourists but bear this in mind if you’re planning on straying off the path.

Insurance is always down to the opinion of the traveler. Healthcare in The Philippines

As with most Asian countries, The Philippines operates both private and public healthcare facilities. Healthcare in major cities of The Philippines is of reasonable quality and is seeing vast improvements over recent years. The World Healthcare Organisation currently ranks Filipino healthcare at a modest #60 in the world.

Public hospitals and clinics are run by the government’s PhilHealth department and are free for citizens. The doctors are highly-trained but the technology isn’t always as high standard as at the private ones. The best hospitals in The Philippines are located in its capital and largest city, Manila. In more rural and rustic communities, the facilities might not be in quite the same shape. However, the doctors themselves have a reliable reputation.

The average cost of a Philippines doctor’s consultation is 500 PHP ($10 USD). Meanwhile, an emergency appointment will cost approximately 2,500 PHP ($50 USD). That same rate applies should you require one night’s stay in a hospital. So, it’s pretty affordable. However, if you require tests, treatment, and prescription medicine, your stay could get pricey. Also, the top-tier hospitals will have slightly more inflated prices.

If you do need to see a doctor in The Philippines, most healthcare establishments will require a downpayment paid upfront, prior to treatment. The rest will be paid (by yourself or travel insurance) before you’re discharged.

Crime in The Philippines

Certain areas and cities within The Philippines are shadowed by a reputation for crime. A couple of areas in The Philippines are out of bounds for travelers specifically Marawi City, Mindanao, and the Sulu Archipelago. The best insurance for your Philippines trip should cover the loss should anything unfortunate happen.

Every so often, a headline announcing a Philippines kidnapping situation makes the news. Usually, these happen in places which foreign governments advise against all travel to, such as Mindanao. Recent kidnappings in Manila have been linked to rising gambling debts , making it targeted rather than a random crime.  The Filipino “war on drugs” is commonly reported on, which sees Filipino President Duterte taking draconian measures to clamp down on illegal drugs.

Issues Facing Travellers in The Philippines

The main issue in The Philippines is deciding which of these adrenaline-packed, sensational islands to visit! Besides that, as we already touched on, natural disasters are an issue to take into account when considering insurance for holidays to The Philippines. The archipelago sits on the Ring of Fire, which is exactly where the majority of the world’s earthquakes and volcanoes take place! Typhoons are very common as well. Only last Christmas, the Typhoon Phanfone saw over 58,000 people evacuated.

As natural disasters cannot always be predicted, it’s wise to take out travel insurance in The Philippines that protects you against such happenings.

As with most places, these beautiful islands are not spared from wily pick-pocketers and opportunistic thieves. 1.8 million Filipinos (7.6% of the population) fell victim to theft in the second half of 2018. As you can imagine, tourists are sitting ducks – particularly in crowded areas. But, really, is there anywhere in the world where petty crime isn’t an issue?

Another issue is motorbikes. Many travelers hire scooters to explore the islands, which is one of the best ways to explore independently. But extreme care must be taken. Manila had an average of 86 motorcycle-related accidents per day in 2019, and fatal crashes are the 9th killer in The Philippines. Ensure your Philippines travel insurance covers you in the event of a crash and ensure you have the correct license to drive. Otherwise, your insurance may be deemed void.

Common Activities in The Philippines

You’ve got plenty to keep you on your toes in The Philippines! The biggest problem you’ll have is whittling down which activities you dabble with. Here are your big three:

  • Scuba diving – With pristine reefs, vibrant coral gardens, and a huge diversity of marine life, scuba diving in The Philippines is phenomenal! Travel insurance for those visiting The Philippines usually covers you to a certain depth. Do check if you are an advanced diver. Remember, if you’re hopping around the islands by plane, don’t forget to factor in your surface interval.
  • Motorbiking – Extremely common, and for good reason! Hiring a motorcycle is one of the best ways to find secret beaches and tourist-free landscapes. But do ensure you have the correct paperwork to cover you in the event of an accident. And wear your helmet – your Philippines travel insurance won’t cover you without one! You’re much more likely to survive in the event of a crash; 90% of fatalities are linked to riding without one.
  • Hiking – The Philippines is blessed with some heart-pounding natural vistas. Chocolate hills, deep jungles, emerald rice terraces – that’s a whole lot of hiking. As many places you visit are pretty remote, in the event of a serious accident, an air ambulance might be required. Obviously, this is an extreme circumstance, but consider factoring in travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation in The Philippines – unless you have deeper pockets than us!

Travel Insurance in Philippines

More often than not, the majority of Philippines travel insurance policies will include the following;

Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses

Luggage and personal property, emergency evacuation and repatriation, non-medical emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, trip interruption.

These are some key terms to look out for when you are comparing different insurance policies. Now, let’s take a closer look at each one of these to see what they actually mean!

Emergency Medical costs cover, is the most important aspects of most travel insurance policies. If you are involved in an accident or get very sick with a mystery illness, you want to rest easy knowing that any medical costs and hospital bills will be taken care of.

Many of you will have never seen a medical bill. Good. But let me tell you, they can get very expensive very easily. A friend of mine was once billed $10,000 in Costa Rica. Even 2 days in a Thai hospital cost him nearly $2,000.00 .

Pre-existing medical and health conditions may not be covered or maybe covered for an additional premium.

Ideally, Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical insurance should offer at least $100,000.00 of coverage. Some run into the millions.

Luggage and Personal Stuff coverage covers the value of your personal property. It’s most common application is for lost luggage and However, many policies also extend this to cover “on the ground” theft which comes in useful if you are robbed once you reach your destination.

The limits on this vary between policies. However, the maximum value rarely exceeds $1000 with a maximum item value between – $250 – $500.

This is ok for many travellers. However if you travel with a lot of electrical gear (laptop & camera), or are packing ski-ing gear, you may also wish to think about taking out a separate gadget cover.

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

Emergency evacuation covers the cost of sending you back to your home country in a sickbed. Let’s say that the above-mentioned illness is a nasty one, and the decision is taken to send you home for further treatment; this will take care of the high costs of flying you home with tubes stuck into your arms.

Repatriation is the cost of sending your body home in the unlikely event that you die on your trip. The costs of this are usually very high. Repatriation costs are not a burden I would want to leave to my family. Whilst this is thankfully rare, I do sometimes come across Facebook or “Go Fund Me” campaigns for somebody’s body to be flown home.

Non-medical Emergency Evacuation is when you have to be evacuated from your destination because of some unexpected crisis.  Examples can be outbreaks of war/civil unrest and earthquakes that decimate infrastructure such as the Nepal earthquake.

In more recent times, the Corona COVID-19 outbreak created the biggest international emergency evacuation situation ever. (FYI – it straddled both the medical and non-medical evacuation boundaries).

Emergency evacuation insurance covers the costs of having to book a last-minute flight home ( which can be very expensive) and will also cover accommodation costs if you end up being flown to a random, “safe” country rather than going straight home.

Having to cancel a trip that you were psyched about is heartbreaking. However, then being left out of pocket just adds scurrilous insult to grievous injury. Trip Cancellation cover can help you recover the non-refundable costs of your trip such as flight and hotel costs.

Obviously, you can’t claim this simply because you changed your mind about the trip or broke up with your girlfriend. Legitimate cancellation reasons are things like sickness, family emergencies, bereavement, natural disaster and war – you get the gist.

Trip Interruption is when something goes wrong, or interrupts, your trip leaving you out of pocket. One example, when your pre-paid hotel burns down and you are forced to book another one. Another example is when your flight home is canceled and you need a few extra nights at your hotel.

Anything Else?

The above are what we consider to be the basic, bare-bones of travel insurance policies. However, some policies do offer a few more aspects to them. The very best Philippines travel insurance policies may also include the following;

Adventure Sports and Activities

Adventure sports and activities are not covered by all travel insurance policies. The definition of adventure sports and activities really does vary between providers but for example, can include;

  • Martial Arts
  • Bungee Jumping
  • Scuba Diving
  • Informal basketball games
.

If you are even thinking about doing anything physical or outdoorsy on your trip, it is very wise to check that your insurance provider is in fact covering it. Snapped tendons tend to hurt plenty enough without having hefty medical bills attached to them.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

This one is perhaps a bit macabre. It doesn’t cover any travel-related expenses as such but instead it basically provides you (or your next of kin) with monetary compensation in the event that something happens to you. If you die, your loved ones get a payout. Or, if you lose a toe or something, YOU get a payout.

It’s kind of like having a bit of life cover attached to your travel insurance.

“Well dear, I’m afraid there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that our beloved daughter little Jenny died on her trip to the Philippines. The good news is that we get $10k! The Philippines here WE come!”

Gear and Electronics Cover

Some insurance policies cover electronic gadgets but others do not. Those that do, sometimes charge an additional fee and they also usually limit the maximum item value. If you only travel with a phone or a tablet then your travel insurer may well cover it entirely. However, if like us if you are traveling with a  decent laptop and camera, then you may wish to consider obtaining gadget cover.

I have personally had separate gadget cover on my MacBook Pro for years.

Whilst they may all seem the same, not all insurers are. Some insurers offer lower prices than others and others offer higher coverage amounts. Some are infamous for not paying claims whilst others are celebrated for being fair and helpful.

Travel insurers – always the same yet always different. It isn’t possible (or legal) for us to say that any one of them is the best, or is “better” than the others. No. Insurance is a very complex product and any policy takes into account a whole lot of data and a wide set of variables.

Remember that the “best” travel insurance always depends on where you are going, when you are going there and ultimately upon you and your needs. The best travel insurer for one trip, may not be the best for a different trip.

Below, we will introduce a few of the many travel insurance providers on offer. These are all firms we have used ourselves over the years.

SafetyWing are a relatively new player in the travel insurance space but are already making big waves. They specialise in cover for digital nomads and they offer open-ended cover on a monthly subscription basis. Because they primarily cover digital nomads, they don’t offer much in the way of trip cancellation or delay so do take that into consideration.

However, SafetyWing really excels on the health side of travel insurance, covering dental and some complementary treatments. In fact they even allow young children to be covered for free.

If cancellation and delay is not a concern for you or if you will be spending some considerable time on your trip, then maybe SafetyWing are right for you

  • Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses – $250,000
  • Baggage and Personal Property – $3000
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation – $100,000
  • Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation – $10,000
  • Trip Cancellation -$0
  • Trip Interruption – $5000

World Nomads provides travel insurance for travelers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance.

The savvy fin-tech insurer Faye provides whole-trip travel coverage and care that brings out the best in each journey with industry-leading technology that enables smarter and smoother assistance with faster claims resolutions. Their excellent app-based travel insurance covers your health, your trip and your gear all via an app that provides real-time proactive solutions, quick reimbursements and 24/7 customer support.

If you ever do need to make a claim, then you simply log in to the app and the claim will be assessed super quickly from anywhere in the world! My friend made a claim and was able to manage everything directly on the app. She was even able to purchase ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ Insurance that allows you to quite literally cancel for any reason, and be refunded up to 75% of non-refundable bookings.

Best of all, if the claim is successful then the funds will be immediately credited to the smart wallet on your phone or device and ready for you to spend.

Columbus Direct

Named after one of history’s greatest (and most divisive explorers), Columbus Direct also specialise in insuring adventure-hungry explorers like us. They have been providing award-winning insurance for 30 years. What we like about this plan is that it does cover small amounts of personal cash. However, Gadget Cover is not available.

Columbus Direct actually offers a number of different travel insurance plans. Below we have focused on 1 of these and have set out the coverage amounts for the Globetrotter plan.

  • Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses – $1,000,000
  • Baggage and Personal Property – $750
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation – $1,000,000
  • Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation – $0
  • Trip Cancellation -$1,000
  • Trip Interruption   (“Catastophe”)  – $750

Iati Seguros

Iati Seguros is a Spanish based travel insurance company that we have personally used and loved. You will notice that they provide competitive cover amounts for the key travel insurance areas, and are competitively priced. So far we have heard nothing but good things about them.

They also offer multiple ones, but we have focused on the Standard Plan although we wholly encourage checking out all plans for yourself to identify the best one for your needs.

Standard Plan

  • Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses – $200,000
  • Baggage and Personal Property – $1000
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation – 100% of cost
  • Trip Cancellation -$1,500
  • Trip Interruption  – 100% of cost

Insure My Equipment

Insuremyequipment.com does precisely what the name suggests. They are an online insurer for expensive equipment (like camera gear & gold clubs). You can use them to get specific pieces of gear insured but please bear in mind this policy is only for your specified gear.

An Insure My Equipment policy works well in combination with other travel insurance. Insure My Equipment policies are an excellent choice for professionals and backpackers with more $0000’s  worth of camera equipment, expensive laptops or fishing rods.

I also know a few traveling musicians and DJs who use these guys so you are in cool company.

Baluarte Watch Tower

Choosing the right travel insurance for your Philippines holiday is like choosing a pair of shoes. Only you can really say how well they fit, and how many miles you can manage in them.

To decide who the right insurer for you is, you need to add up how much your trip is worth, how much equipment you plan to take with you and what activities you intend to engage in.

You also need to ask yourself how much you can afford. This means how much you can afford to pay for cover but also how much you can afford to be out of pocket in the unlikely event of an incident. Sometimes, the cheapest Philippines travel insurance will be enough and sometimes it will be worth spending a bit more.

Hopefully the information provided in this post will help you to decide. If not, then I  guess I just wasted 7 hours of my life in writing it.

How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance for Filipinos [With My Recommendations!]

So, do you really need travel insurance when you travel abroad even to Thailand or somewhere near the Philippines for only 3 or 4 days? Here’s my guide on choosing the best travel insurance for my fellow Filipinos.

If you can’t afford travel insurance then you should re-consider about going on trips. You can even get it for less than $1.5 or 100 Philippines pesos per day (read below and I’ll show you computation) ! You never know what will happen during your trip.

I was on a car accident in Pakistan that required hospital visits, surgery, medicine, wheelchair and last minute flights. After what happened to me, that accident cost more than $15,000 (almost 1 Million sa Pesos) in total (medical and non-medical expenses). Aside from the other expenses of hotels, canceling my upcoming trips and not being able to work.

Thankfully, my insurance arranged the “guaranteed of payment” with the hospitals in Thailand and NHS UK so I didn’t have to spend any of our savings – they paid the hospitals directly (ang mahal ng hospital bills  ah!!) .

I will write another article on how I filed the claim, basically, my husband immediately called them after my accident and they asked for my guide or any local number I have so they can call me to coordinate. I only paid $100 for the hospital in Pakistan since they only did an Xray and temporary cast to help me with the swelling. Imagine, I had to drive for 24 hours after my accident from Hunza Valley to reach Islamabad. There were other hospitals in Gilgit but it means I’ll be stuck there on my own and I don’t think I’d want my surgery in Pakistan. I told the insurance I will pay for it instead and claim later.

I didn’t want to get stuck in Islamabad so I told them the doctor in Pakistan allowed me to take my flight to Thailand (that I pre-arranged months before to meet my family for my birthday) and asked them for the hospital they can recommend so I can get proper treatment.

They recommended BNH Hospital in Bangkok, one of the most expensive hospitals in Thailand (check google!) and they asked me that if a “guarantee of payment” is needed then they can arrange it. So they arranged for the payment directly with the hospital and I did a 3D Xray, a specialist doctor who told me I have a bimalleolar ankle fracture, a physical therapy session to teach me how to use the crutches and medicine. They can’t do my surgery because my ankle was really swollen and I don’t want to do it there because I’ll be on my own later on. Jonathan could fly in (they will pay for the cost) but we can’t be in Thailand for recovery because we have our cats and can’t be left alone for a while.

I told them I want to fly to the UK since my husband is there and I don’t live in the Philippines since 2009 but I am a Filipino citizen. They gave me instruction on how to deal with NHS and foreign national medical bills/payment. NHS / Healthcare in the UK is free for citizens and residents but I’m not a resident so I had to pay for it. The insurance coordinated with their insurance partner in the UK and arrange it with the hospital so my 2 surgeon consultations and my surgery were covered aside from the medicine and follow up appointments.

Best Travel Insurance for Filipinos

I will write more later but imagine what I’ve been through and if I had to pay all of these then I think I’d go crazy! I could sue the tour company in Pakistan to cover the cost but you know it’s a small business and it’s an accident, so thankfully, I have travel insurance.

(I don’t know if insurance in the Philippines would pay the hospital directly instead of asking you to pay it first then refund.. pano kung wala kang cash? Mangugutang or gofundme na lang?)

Best Travel Insurance for Filipinos

You booked your ticket and hotel already. You even packed your bags weeks before your travel. Akala mo ready ka na.

So ganoon na lang yun? Game ka na to ‘hit the road’ agad – agad?

Wala ka bang nakakalimutan? Feeling ko, there is one important thing that you missed.

Have you purchased your Travel Insurance? If not, better get one from SafetyWing .

Update: I previously thought that the Insurance covers Trip Cancellation but would actually only cover Trip Interruption. They mentioned that they are planning to improve their service next year but thankfully all my medical expenses are covered.

I will explain it ha. This can be a lengthy post but definitely worth it. Lalo na kung ayaw mo maghirap after traveling.

Most Filipinos love to get the cheapest deals. That’s precisely the reason why airline promos are a big hit to us. Aminin na natin na we are ‘kuripot’. 🙂  I get your point, but after traveling for quite some time, I realized that you would definitely experience a number of mishaps. I’ll give you a list, ok?

Nahuli ka sa flight e non-rebookable yung ticket mo!

Nagka- dengue ka 2 days before your scheduled flight!

You lost your laptop and smartphone, ARAY!

Nabalian ka ng buto while doing some adventurous activities

Hindi ako OA, pero these things can happen. Minsan mas malala pa. E di mas mapapagastos ka sa pagbili ng bagong tickets, sa medical expenses and sa pag-purchase ng new gadgets. Mapapamura (pun intended) ka na lang ng hindi oras!

Thing is, you can get yourself protected. Some of you might just resort to simple flight insurance, but are you satisfied with its coverage?

If you are planning to travel and to leave your country without so many worries, I strongly suggest that you get a comprehensive travel insurance – it’s different from Medical Insurance, Life Insurance or the Airline Insurance (don’t get this, you don’t need that!). When you travel around Europe, one of the visa requirements is having your own Travel Insurance and not the other kind of insurance.

You can check how much your Travel Insurance would cost you pero usually it’s $37 or less than 2,000 more per month pero you only PAY PER DAY.

So for example, you’ll go on a 5-day trip then it’s only $6.60 (excluding a trip to USA). You can purchase it ahead of time as long as you put the Start Date and End Date. So how much is $6.60 in Philippines Pesos? Only around 340 Pesos!

Table of Contents

… or click here so you can get the price quotation here.

If you decide to travel to the USA then you will be paying more but not much. It’s around $12 (USD) for a 5-day trip or 630 Philippines Pesos! If you will travel to the USA, make sure to always have a travel insurance because it’s REALLY expensive there. I remember after we survived hurricane Irma in Florida and Jonathan had a minor accident on his hand, our old insurance policy won’t cover it because it’s “his fault”, we ended up paying $1,500.

Safety Wing Travel Insurance for Filipinos

That’s the reason why we switched to a new insurance provider and thankfully when I had my car accident, they didn’t hesitate to help me immediately with my medical situation. I will write more later on how we file insurance claims or what to do when you get into an accident.

Things To Do In Mongolia17

Definitely, Travel Insurance.

Travel insurance for us Pinoys, might not be a popular concept but it is a necessity every time you have the urge to leave and travel. In a nutshell, it covers practically everything you need while on vacation. That’s why we strongly encourage to check out SafetyWing because, for us, it is the best option.

1. You can get it even if you are not in your home country.

At least kahit nakaalis ka na, pwede ka pa din mag avail ng travel insurance Safety Wing. Pwede kasing nagbago ka ng travel plans, or ang tagal mo nagdecide kaya hindi ka kaagad nakakuha. Now, you don’t have a reason for not having your travel insurance.

2. Made especially for ‘kaladkarins’ like us – quick getaway, short trip or even long-term travel!

Yes, para talaga sa travelers. Check out why!

a. Medical help

Most likely, your medical insurance will not cover medical expenses incurred overseas. What if wala kang pera sa bank? Or what if walang pera yung relatives mo? E di nganga ka sa hospital nyan? Kanino ka hihiram? Sakit pa sa ulo, di ba?

b. Emergency Medical Evacuation

And what if your condition entails you to evacuate and go home? Mahal yun if you don’t have a travel insurance.

c. Trip Cancellation (Update: NOT COVERED with SafetyWing)

And for some reason kelangan i- cancel yung trip because of something really important or unexpected circumstances? What will happen with all of the paid bookings?

d. Stolen or Damaged Gears (Update: NOT COVERED with SafetyWing)

Sometimes, you are just unlucky. Pero with travel insurance, they’ll reimburse you to buy again yung mga nawalang travel gadgets.

3. Change of Plans

Minsan gusto mo mag- stay sa isang lugar pero hindi na covered ng original travel insurance policy mo? If you get SafetyWing, it is possible to extend and have your stay covered.

4. Resuming your Trip

So nangyari na nga ang dapat hindi mangyari, na-cut ang trip and you have to go home. Don’t worry, you can still resume to your trip. Yes! Some of the policies will allow that.

Check out what it will cover you and this one below is specifically for Filipinos traveling worldwide excluding travel to USA and Philippines. You can start the trip anywhere and not necessarily in the Philippines/ Home Country.

Best Travel Insurance for Filipinos

What Does Safetywing Cover on their travel & medical insurance?

For their normal policy they would cover the following on the screenshot above :

Travel Delay – when you miss your flights and when the airlines won’t cover you!

Baggage & Personal effects – when the airlines lost your luggage and they are not willing to pay for it!

Overseas Medical and Dental coverage – yes, even your dental needs

Personal and Travel Documents

Personal Liability – Physical injury and property damage and much more

Why is it better than the Philippines-based Travel Insurance Companies?

Most of the insurance companies in the Philippines are not used to LONG-TERM Travel or backpacking kind of travel! They don’t know how it entails, you can’t even avail the travel insurance when you’re already abroad and you have to purchase it before you leave the Philippines!

It’s a good thing that SafetyWing is able to understand what travelers really need.  Also, I’ve been hearing a lot of stories from Filipino friends and readers that their insurance company didn’t want to pay for the claims or it took ages for them to pay it! Nakaka – bad trip yun, really!

Why Believe me?

I’ve been traveling around the world since 2013 and visited 136 countries. As a traveling entrepreneur, we look for exciting ways to sustain our life of travel. Lahat na siguro ng death-defying adventures nagawa ko na or balak namin gawin.

That said, it is inevitable to have a few accidents or misadventures while on the road like my car accident in Pakistan and glad I have SafetyWing insurance who paid for all my medical expenses.

Best Travel Insurance for Filipinos

The only way we can protect ourselves is by having travel insurance. Hindi naman pwede na lahat ng accidents charged sa credit card or tawag sa friends, di ba? That’s why I can truly say that SafetyWing is the perfect solution. Kahit na medyo frugal ako, gagastusan ko talaga ang Travel Insurance. Mahirap na di ba?

Why Filipinos need TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Again, I’ll explain the below items further to enlighten you that travel insurance is a must even if it’s not with SafetyWing or just any random Travel insurance company in the Philippines.

1. You got terribly ill a day before your flight

Your body tells you that you can’t leave the next day, but since you booked the cheapest and most-restricted ticket, you can’t refund nor rebook the flight. Sayang ang pera!  And it’s not just about the flight cost. What if you already reserved your hotel? There’s a big chance that they will charge a night for not showing up.

This huge waste of cash can be avoided if you have your travel insurance. You might get a lower amount compared to what you have spent, but that’s better than losing everything for nothing.

2. You lost your expensive smartphone and laptop

I’ve heard a number of horror stories about losing gadgets while on the road. There are actually different reasons. One of my friends left it at a restaurant in Thailand. The other one lost it in a public bus in South America. Ang saklap nito!

While most locals from different countries are hospitable, there are few that will take advantage of tourists. For travel writers like us, losing our laptops and smartphones is literally a big loss to us. Kung sa akin mangyari ito, I will be lost for days.

Our gadgets are considered investment, we try to purchase the best units, which are quite costly. By having a travel insurance that covers lost gears, at least you can replace those without shelling the entire cost from your own pocket.

3. You got hospitalized while traveling

Huwag naman sana, pero it happens.

I remember watching an episode of ‘Monsters Inside Me’ when a couple went on a Safari trip. Unfortunately, parasites went through their skin and that made them sick most of their trip. I immediately thought of their medical bills. Sadly, your local medical insurance will obviously not work overseas. But if you choose comprehensive travel insurance, that would be a lesser burden.

4. You need to go back home – pronto!

In some cases, you need to evacuate instantly. This is applied usually to natural disasters.

5. An accident happened to someone and it was your fault

And for some reason, someone decided to sue you because of an accident, (this rarely happens, but possible). Make sure you got yourself covered. Paying for legal fees can break banks! Make sure you are protected.

Now, if ngayon ka lang kukuha ng Travel Insurance , make sure of the following even if it’s not with SafetyWing:

  • Medical Coverage Limit

Your travel insurance policy should have high medical coverage. What if you needed to stay in the hospital for days? How sure are you that your insurance can cover your expenses while in there? If your provider seems to have a low limit for this, I suggest that you get other options.

  • Evacuation Coverage

There are really instances that you have to immediately leave the country because of the conditions which you can’t control. By including an evacuation coverage in your policy, you spare yourself from making a handful of calls to different airlines just so you can be accommodated.

  • Countries Covered

If you are going to different countries, for example going around South East Asia , you might want to select travel insurance that covers most of your destination. Unless you are a fortune-teller, you can’t say which countries you will need it.

  • Gadgets Covered (Update: NOT COVERED with SafetyWing)

Make sure you get the decent limit that can be at par with the cost of your electronics. Again, we all live in a ‘wired’ world and losing gadgets can make you feel disconnected in some ways.

5. Flight, Hotel, and other Transportation Cancellations

When you cancel your trip, it is not only the flight that you are going to lose. You will lose money because of accommodation and sometimes even more if you rented cars or booked a train ride. Your insurance should cover all of these. Otherwise, choose another provider.

6. Round the Clock Support Desk

Most importantly, ensure that your provider has a 24/ 7 desk that can help you anywhere in the world. There are few providers that will only answer your concerns during their office hours, which is of course, based on their location. Mahirap naman ata yun. You need to make a claim as soon as possible so you need to get in touch with a representative right away.

Practical Tips when Getting Travel Insurance

Our 8 Day Cultural Itinerary In Iran With Visit Our Iran And Marcopolo Touring Co

  • Always read the fine print and don’t be afraid to ask questions
  • Keep a copy of your agreement. Bring it with you and have some copies in your email.
  • Ensure that you keep all your travel receipts. This should make claiming easier.

Again, even if you are always looking out for the lowest travel deals, you should never compromise your health and you must prepare for uncontrollable things. The only way to fly without worries is by getting travel insurance that will cover almost everything while you are away from home. Hindi naman sa paranoid ako, pero I want you to enjoy your travel even if something unexpected will happen.

hi Ms. kach! how to claim or what is the process if I need to go to a hospital in the US, not necessarily due to accident? who to call and do i need to fill up anything?

You can try going to this website – https://safetywing.com/?referenceID=24734583 and asking the customer service (located on the bottom right of the screen) for a number.

Is it possible to help me finalize my purchase? I read you’re an affiliate of Safety Wing? I don’t know why but it keeps rejecting my husband’s credit card 🙁

You can check with their customer service as to why your husband’s cc is not accepted. They reply immediately.

Hello po! Does safetyWing covered already covid positive cases? Thank you po!

Only if they get the Covid before they purchased the insurance. If they are already Covid positive then I dont think they’ll cover the expenses. Thanks!

Hello po! Any travel insurance you would recommend po for covering lost gadgets or gears? Thank you!

Good Afternoon, My Wife will be traveling to visit me in Djibouti… I’m a Gwapo Joe and she is my Magandang Asawang Pilipina. She’ll need Travel insurance to cover: medical, flight cancellation and hospitalization, re-bookings, and accommodation if return flight is cancelled.

Many thanks

Where can i buy safety wing travel insurance?

Hi! Would you recommend SafetyWing or South America? Based on your reco (thank you!), Ill be using AXA for my Schengen visa application, but my friends are doing Bolivia & Peru & would like to check for them. Thank you!

Hello Ruth, I recommend Safetywing for South America and this is the same I used for Central Asia. I used WorldNomads before but it was so expensive and they are no longer issuing insurance for Filipino citizens.

Hi, Can you please help me to questions below: 1. What happens if you just purchased and the travel dates has been changed? 2. Or there was an issued travel ban imposed by the Philippine government and your trip can no longer be push thru or rebook/refund.?

Hi Kach, just wanted to confirm that this travel insurance can be used for Schengen visa application. If I’m not mistake, the coverage should be at least 30k eur. TIA!

Not this one for Schengen visa application, I recommend AXA Schengen for that –> http://bit.ly/TwoMonkeysSchengenInsurance

I am actually planning to purchase with AXA anytime soon until I read this. Found Safety Wing’s price cheaper than other travel insurance provider in the Phils. that I’ve checked. Thanks for this post. -FB follower too:)

Thanks po but for Schengen visa application I think AXA would be accepted in Pinas because SafetyWing is more for other countries – they also cover Europe but for visa application then hassle to request for more documents from them! =)

Just want to confirm if Safetywing does not include pregnant women under their travel insurance policy?

Hi Mrs Howe,

What does this mean exactly?

Lost checked luggage* Up to $3,000 per certificate period; $500 per item. Up to $6,000 lifetime limit. No deductible. Notable exclusions are Electronics such as phones, laptops, cameras are not covered

They covered the cost of your lost luggage and with maximum of $3000 in value the entire validity of your insurance.. so for example you lost your luggage 5 times on let’s say you have a 6 months valid Insurance certificate.. they’d cover it up to $500 per luggage ($2,500). The gadgets are not covered because they are expensive so you’re better off having a different insurance for your expensive gear.

After going through your blog I’m certainly considering this. My wife and my 7 month old daughter will be traveling to The Philippines at the end of this month. Aside from my wife. Is my daughter eligible to avail the travel insurance?

Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you in advance.

Yes, apply as a family so you can get a discount. Make sure to also add your baby’s name! Unlike airlines, there are no discounts for children po. It’s really cheap and good for peace of mind! =)

Do they have coverage for US travel?

You’ll have to pay extra if you’ll travel in the USA and it’s not that much.

Thank you for this post. I will definitely get travel insurance next time I travel.

You should always get one! If you get discounts on your flights then use it for your travel insurance! haha! =)

Ang safetywing ba ay pwede din sa local travel dito sa pinas?

Yes pwede din kaso limited to 30 days a year sya kung taga abroad ka then you’ll travel to Pinas.

I suggest kung sa Pinas ka naman nakabased and local travels then medical insurance is what you need to get po and not travel insurance. =)

Galing naman nito Mrs.Howe!!

Salamat po pero sana di ko naexperience ma-accident ano para magshare ng story! hahahah! =)

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

FAQ About Travel Insurance from the Philippines to the US

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, travel insurance is not mandatory for travel to the USA. However, regardless of whether or not it's legally required, it's always a good idea to take our health insurance before you travel to the US. For what's usually an affordable cost, taking out travel insurance will mitigate most or all of the risk of financial damage if you run into any unexpected troubles during your trip abroad.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to visitors worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with traveling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the insured, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent tourists.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins.
