The Skógafoss waterfall as seen from above in winter

This South Coast tour is ideal for nature lovers of all kinds. We take you along the south coast of Iceland, one of the country’s most scenic regions, as far as Vík, a charming village surrounded by high beautiful bird cliffs.

We stop among the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljalandsá river, which has its origins in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes Seljalandsfoss so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. We recommend you bring either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along if you want to walk behind it. Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk.

We will also make a stop at Reynisfjara black sand beach, with the Reynisdrangar rock formations and columnar basalt. It is one of the most spectacular beaches in Iceland but can be dangerous, and we kindly ask our guest not to go too close to the ocean and go by guidelines.

Additionally, we will stop by Sólheimajökull glacier and walk up to a small lake which has formed in front of the retreating glacier.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach - A Volcanic Wonder

Prepare to be amazed by the world-famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. The black sand beach is a very popular stop when visiting the south coast of Iceland. Take a memorable stroll along the volcanic black sand, surrounded by towering basalt formations and powerful Atlantic waves crashing upon the shores. Keep an eye out for the craggy rock formations just offshore, said to be petrified trolls!

Formation of the Black Sand Beach

The formation of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is an extraordinary natural phenomenon that dates back to ancient volcanic activity. The beach's jet-black sand is a result of the erosion of basaltic lava, which was formed when molten lava cooled rapidly upon contact with the ocean. Over time, this volcanic material was broken down into fine grains, creating the unique black sand that covers the beach.

The beach's iconic basalt columns are another fascinating feature that adds to its allure. These hexagonal pillars were formed through the slow cooling and contraction of lava flows, resulting in the characteristic geometric shapes. The mesmerizing sight of these towering columns, coupled with the contrast of the black sand, creates a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

Reynisfjara's formation is a testament to the power and beauty of nature, showcasing the intricate processes that have shaped the Earth over millions of years. It serves as a reminder of Iceland's volcanic origins and the constant evolution of our planet.

Unique features of Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is renowned for its unique features fromed from volcanic eruptions, which set it apart from other beaches around the world. One of the most striking aspects is the presence of Reynisdrangar, the basalt sea stacks that rise dramatically from the sea. These towering formations, standing up to 66 meters tall, create a captivating visual spectacle and provide a stunning backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The features are all the result of old volcanic eruptions.

Another notable feature of Reynisfjara is the impressive basalt cave known as Hálsanefshellir. Located near the beach, this cave offers a glimpse into the ancient geological history of the area. As you explore its dark chambers, you'll be surrounded by the echoes of crashing waves and the play of light filtering through the narrow openings, creating an ethereal experience.

The picturesque cliffs that frame Reynisfjara Beach are yet another unique aspect of this volcanic eruptions wonder. Carved by the relentless force of the Atlantic Ocean, these cliffs exhibit fascinating rock formations and intricate patterns, showcasing the ever-changing nature of the coastal landscape.

Safety precautions for visiting Reynisfjara

While Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is undeniably beautiful, it's important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with visiting this natural wonder. The powerful waves and unpredictable currents of the Atlantic Ocean can pose a significant risk to unsuspecting visitors. It is crucial to exercise caution and adhere to the following safety precautions:

Stay away from the water's edge : The waves at Reynisfjara can be deceptively powerful and can easily sweep you off your feet. It's essential to keep a safe distance from the water's edge and never turn your back on the ocean.

Beware of sneaker waves : Sneaker waves, also known as rogue waves, can unexpectedly surge ashore with tremendous force. Always be vigilant and watch out for any signs of unusual wave patterns or sudden changes in the water's behavior.

Respect the warning signs : The beach is equipped with warning signs that indicate the potential dangers. Take these signs seriously and follow any instructions or recommendations provided.

Keep an eye on children : Children should be closely supervised at all times when visiting Reynisfjara. The strong currents and steep cliffs can pose a significant risk to their safety.

By being cautious and respectful of the ocean's power, you can enjoy the beauty of Reynisfjara while ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you. Don´t be afraid to ask your tour guide if you have questions.

Wildlife at Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is not only a haven for geology enthusiasts but also boasts a diverse range of wildlife. The rocky cliffs provide nesting grounds for various seabird species, including puffins, fulmars, and guillemots. These graceful birds can be observed soaring above the cliffs or diving into the ocean in search of food.

The beach itself is home to a variety of marine life, with seals occasionally spotted basking on the rocks or swimming close to the shore. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of whales or dolphins in the distance as they navigate the deep waters of the Atlantic.

For nature lovers, Reynisfjara offers a unique opportunity to witness the interconnectedness of land and sea and to appreciate the delicate balance of ecosystems thriving in this volcanic environment.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon - A Glacial Paradise

One of the most iconic attractions on the South Coast is the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Witness the meeting of the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull and the ocean as giant pieces of ice calve from the glacier and float serenely out to sea. Nearby, at Diamond Beach, you'll find glittering fragments of icebergs carved into stunning shapes by the wind and waves.

Formation and geographical features of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a result of the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. As the glacier melts, large blocks of ice break off and float in the lagoon, creating a stunning display of icebergs. The glacial waters, sourced from the Vatnajökull ice cap, are incredibly clear and take on a mesmerizing blue hue. The lagoon is surrounded by black sand beaches, contrasting the pristine icebergs and creating a unique and picturesque landscape.

The lagoon is constantly changing due to the movement of the icebergs. As they float towards the mouth of the lagoon, they eventually make their way to the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving environment. The size and shape of the icebergs vary greatly, with some towering several meters above the water, while others are smaller and more delicate.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is not only visually stunning but also serves as an important research site for scientists studying glacial retreat and the effects of climate change. As the glaciers continue to melt, the lagoon is expected to grow in size, making it an even more significant natural phenomenon.

Unique wildlife and flora at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is not only a glacial paradise for humans but also a haven for various wildlife species. One of the most iconic inhabitants of the lagoon is the Atlantic seal. These curious creatures can often be seen basking on the floating ice or swimming gracefully in the glacial waters. Visitors can witness these majestic animals up close during boat tours of the lagoon, providing a truly unforgettable experience.

In addition to seals, Jökulsárlón is a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. The lagoon attracts a wide variety of bird species, including Arctic terns, great skuas, and puffins. The sight of these birds soaring above the icebergs is a true spectacle and adds to the overall enchantment of the lagoon.

The flora surrounding Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is sparse but resilient. The harsh conditions of the glacier tongue environment have given rise to unique plant species that have adapted to the extreme cold and limited nutrients. Mosses, lichens, and small flowering plants can be found scattered across the black sand beaches, adding a touch of color to the stark landscape.

Activities and attractions at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southern Iceland

There are numerous activities and attractions that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. One of the most popular options is a boat tour of the lagoon. Hop aboard a zodiac or amphibian boat and navigate through the icebergs, getting up close and personal with these natural wonders. The knowledgeable guides provide insights into the formation of the lagoon and its inhabitants, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring.

For those seeking a more tranquil experience, simply standing at the edge of the lagoon and taking in the breathtaking scenery is a must. The stillness of the water, the towering icebergs, and the distant sound of cracking ice create a sense of serenity that is hard to find elsewhere. Be sure to bring your camera and capture the beauty of Jökulsárlón in all its glory.

If you're feeling adventurous, consider taking a guided glacier hike on the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Strap on crampons and explore the icy terrain, marveling at crevasses, ice caves, and ice formations. This thrilling experience offers a unique perspective on the glacial environment and is sure to leave you with lasting memories.

Tips for visiting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Dress warmly: The weather near the lagoon can be unpredictable, with strong winds and low temperatures. Layer your clothing and bring a waterproof jacket to protect yourself from the elements.

Be mindful of the wildlife: While observing the seals and birds at Jökulsárlón can be a highlight of your visit, it's important to respect their space and not disturb them. Keep a safe distance and use binoculars or a telephoto lens to get a closer look.

Book boat tours in advance: Boat tours at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon are popular and can fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist season. To secure your spot, it's advisable to book your tour in advance.

Pack snacks and water: There are limited dining options near the lagoon, so it's a good idea to bring snacks and water to keep yourself energized throughout the day.

Stay safe: The lagoon can be slippery, especially around the edges where the ice meets the water. Take caution when walking and wear appropriate footwear with good traction.

Best time to visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

The best time to visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon depends on the experience you're seeking. In the summer months of June to August, the weather is milder, and the days are longer, allowing for more exploration time. This is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds.

If you're hoping to witness the Northern Lights dancing above the lagoon, plan your visit between September and April. The winter months offer a unique opportunity to see the lagoon illuminated by the vibrant colors of the Aurora Borealis. However, keep in mind that the weather can be harsh during this time, with limited daylight hours and colder temperatures.

Regardless of the season, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a sight to behold and will leave you in awe no matter when you visit.

The Formation of Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach owes its existence to the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which is a part of the larger Vatnajökull glacier. As the glacier slowly advances, chunks of ice break off and float downstream towards the Atlantic Ocean. These icebergs then get washed ashore, adorning the volcanic black sand beach with their presence.

The black sand is a result of volcanic activity in the area, creating a stark contrast against the translucent icebergs. The constant interaction between the icebergs and the waves shapes them into various forms and sizes, making each visit to Diamond Beach a unique experience.

Unique Features of Diamond Beach

What sets Diamond Beach apart is the ethereal beauty of the icebergs against the dark sand. The icebergs come in different shades of white and blue, and their smooth surfaces reflect the sunlight, creating a dazzling display of colors. As the waves crash onto the beach, they gently polish the ice formations, making them glisten like radiant diamonds.

No two icebergs are the same, and each one has its own unique shape and texture. Some icebergs are small and delicate, while others are massive and imposing. Visitors can spend hours exploring the beach, marveling at the intricate patterns and details of the ice formations.

Wildlife at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, located just a short walk from Diamond Beach, is not only home to stunning icebergs but also a rich variety of wildlife. The lagoon serves as a sanctuary for various bird species, including Arctic terns, puffins, and great skuas. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures up close.

If you're lucky, you might even spot seals swimming among the icebergs. The lagoon provides an ideal habitat for seals, and they can often be seen basking on the ice or diving into the cold waters. Witnessing these playful creatures in their natural environment is a truly magical experience.

Best Time to Visit Diamond Beach and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

The best time to visit Diamond Beach and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is during the summer months, from May to September. The weather is relatively mild, and the days are long, allowing for more time to explore and appreciate the beauty of the area. Additionally, the summer months offer the chance to witness the Midnight Sun, where the sun remains visible throughout the night.

During the winter months, from October to April, the region transforms into a winter wonderland. However, the weather can be harsh, with temperatures dropping below freezing and limited daylight hours. Despite the challenging conditions, the icy landscape takes on a whole new level of beauty, and the Northern Lights may even make an appearance.

South Coast Travel Guide

Dyrhólaey peninsula from east to west

The South Coast of Iceland is one of the most popular parts of the country for travelers. South Iceland is lined with countless natural wonders including cascading waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers and black sand beaches.

There is a whole range of South Coast tours in Iceland that will take you to all the best locations on this stretch.

This incredible South Shore of Iceland stretches from the greater Reykjavík area in the west to the magnificent Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in the east. It’s possible to incorporate a trip to The Golden Circle before heading South. This is another popular area with visitors to Iceland. Here you can see Þingvellir (or Thingvellir) National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, a volcanic crater called Kerið, and one of Iceland's biggest waterfalls; Gulfoss.

If you want to explore this beautiful region, we recommend booking a hotel in South Iceland to use as a base to travel around the area.

Highlights of the South Coast of Iceland

The South Coast offers an array of natural wonders that draw thousands of visitors each day.

The whole area is geologically very young, formed during the last Ice Age by the lava flows from numerous volcanoes in the area. The lowlands are surrounded by volcanically active mountains, notably Eyjafjallajökull and Hekla . If you stop at Hveragerði, you can visit the Quake 2008 exhibition where you can witness the split in the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

In terms of culture in the South, it is rich and diverse. Most towns have amateur groups for theatre, poetry reading, and choir song. Community is a big part of an Icelander’s life and one of the key things that help them get through the winter months. The South was once home to the ancient bishop seat of Skálholt . Also, Iceland's most famous saga, Njal's Saga, takes place in the region.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall in South Iceland at sunset

When driving the South Coast route from Reykjavík city, the first major features are the two great waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss . These falls which sit beneath the notorious subglacial volcano, Eyjafjallajökull. On clear days, the Westman Islands can be seen across the ocean from these beautiful cascades. Less than a kilometre from Seljalandsfoss is the hidden gem of Gljúfrabúi waterfall.

Skógar , which is home to Skogafoss waterfall, has a very interesting museum that discusses some of the nation’s history and culture. One of Iceland’s most famous hiking trails, Fímmvörðuháls , cuts through the area and is worth the walk if you have time.

A little further down the route is the glacier Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers one of Iceland’s most explosive volcanoes, Katla. Many glacier hikes are taken here upon the glacier tongue, Sólheimajökull .

This landscape has also been shaped by volcanic eruptions, although these were much more recent. Vast expanses of the black sand stretch from the Highlands to the sea, part of several glacial outwash plains that flood during a volcanic eruption. One such sandplain, Sólheimasandur, is home to a crashed DC-3 Plane Wreck .

DC-3 plane wreck

The Dyrhólaey cliffs are next, home to many seabirds. Jutting out to sea is an enormous rock arch of the same name, which you can marvel at from many angles.

Adjacent to the village of Vík is the famous black-sand beach, Reynisfjara , which is home to basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar rock formations. These pillars are said to be two trolls frozen by the light of the sun.

Though beautiful, this area is notorious for its dangerous sneaker waves. Even on seemingly calm and still days, visitors should keep a distance from the shoreline. There are no landmasses between Reynisfjara beach and the continent of Antarctica, so you can imagine how the waves can build momentum.

Church in Vik overlooking Reynisdrangar at sunset

After passing through Vík you will cross the glacial sandplain of Skeiðarársandur before entering Vatnajökull National Park . Here you can see Vatnajokull Glacier, Iceland’s largest glacier. Many ice cave tours take place in Vatnajokull in the winter months.

Move on to the dramatic Skaftafell Nature Reserve in the National Park. Here you can enjoy a diversity of landscapes and terrains. The area was considered a National Park in its own right because it was so beautiful.

Finally, you will approach the famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a deep lake that fills with icebergs as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier slowly breaks down. Here there are plenty of options for boat tours that take you around the lagoon and up close to icebergs. A short distance from Jökulsárlón you will find the Diamond Beach, where blue icebergs wash on the black-sand beach, and another glacier lagoon called Fjallsárlón .

Geography, Nature & Wildlife

The South Coast is the most easily accessible part of the country’s southern region, found along the Ring Road ( Route 1 ), which encircles Iceland. The area is made up of diverse landscapes; marshlands, bays, cultivated pastures, estuaries and black sand deserts.

Underneath the soil rests a vast lava field, known as Þjórsárhraun. Reaching several hundred metres offshore, it provides a protective factor to the lowland as ocean waves crash upon it. This results in the South Shore being unusually lacking in the deep fjords that so distinctly characterize the rest of Iceland's shoreline.

Unlike most early Icelandic settlements, few of the communities in the south were based on fishing. The only town with a significant harbour in the south is Þorlákshöfn , where the ferry to the Westman Islands leaves. Some agriculture is found here, with farms nestled in the mountains, but because of the glacial floods, they are few and far between.

People Bathing in the Secret Lagoon in Iceland

There are, however, plenty of hot springs in the area. The most famous is the Blue Lagoon Spa which is close to Keflavik airport. The lagoon formed as a result of the overflow from a nearby power plant.

However, there are lots of natural geothermal hot springs in more remote locations, where you can avoid the crowds and have a more natural experience. Some of the spots travelers recommend are Seljavallalaug , which is close to Skogar, and Reykjadalur , the Valley of Steam, which is close to Hveragerði.

The North Atlantic Puffin nesting in cliffs in Iceland

The South region boasts vibrant bird life during all seasons. Freshwater birds nest in the marshlands and around the estuaries, while seabirds flock around the cliffs of Reynisdrangar and Dyrhólaey .

You may be able to spot North Atlantic puffins nesting on the cliffs between May and August. In summer, there are 2-3 times as many Arctic Tern as Icelanders so you are bound to spot some of them on your travels. Some species stay throughout the harsh Icelandic winter, including the northern diver, the loom and various species of gulls and ducks.

Seals are often found along the shore, particularly around the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach . As with everywhere in Iceland, you should always keep an eye out to the sea, as whales and dolphins reside all along its coastline.

In terms of sports; horse riding is popular, as is fishing, hiking, snorkelling, sightseeing and river rafting.

Family-Friendly 10.5-Hour Guided South Coast Sightseeing Tour with Reykjavik Departure

iceland south shore tour

Description

Discover the breathtaking waterfalls, glaciers, and beaches the South Coast is known for with this incredible 10.5-hour guided tour from Reykjavik. Travelers keen to see natural treasures such as the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls and the Reynisfjara black-sand beach should book this tour now.

Your family-friendly Iceland tour begins in the morning when you board a comfortable bus in central Reykjavik. Then it's time to head toward one of Iceland's most famous sightseeing regions, the glorious South Coast.

As you journey to the South Coast, the cityscape gradually gives way to Iceland's otherworldly landscapes. Look out the window and marvel at the rolling countryside, rugged mountain peaks, and sprawling coastlines, a taste of what's to come.

The day's first stop is the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where pristine water plummets 197 feet (60 meters) from ancient sea cliffs into a serene pool below. The highlight here is the path leading behind the curtain of water, offering a unique perspective.

Next, you'll visit the Skogafoss waterfall, one of Iceland's largest and most picturesque waterfalls. Its raw power is awe-inspiring, with a width of 82 feet (25 meters) and a drop of 197 feet (60 meters).

Rainbows frequently form as sunlight filters through the mist, enhancing the scenic view. Summer travelers can climb the steps up the hill for a bird's eye view of the cascading water.

Then your driver will take you to the Solheimajokull glacier, a rugged, raw terrain of ancient ice, deep crevasses, and water cauldrons. You can walk from the parking lot to the glacier's edge, past the glacial lagoon at its base. It's a beautiful setting with blue and white icebergs streaked with black, yet a reminder of how fast the glacier retreats.

The next stop is the charming coastal village of Vik, the southernmost settlement on mainland Iceland. You'll have a chance to stroll through this quaint village with its picturesque red-roofed church and local shops selling traditional Icelandic woolen goods.

The day's final sightseeing stop is the spectacular Reynisfjara black-sand beach. Known for its striking basalt sea stacks and powerful waves crashing against the shore, Reynisfjara is an enchanting example of Iceland's unique coastal geography. The dark sand, thunderous ocean, and towering cliffs make for an unforgettable sight.

As your driver takes you back to Reykjavik, it's a chance to reflect on a day filled with diverse natural wonders. You'll arrive back in the city in the evening, marking the end of a memorable tour of Iceland's South Coast.

South Shore Tour in Iceland – A Beautiful Day Tour

Out of all the tours and things to do in Iceland , the south shore tour is a must! It was definitely the highlight of my 5 Days in Iceland .

South Shore Tour with Reykjavik Excursions

Our tour began at 9 am and picked us up in front of a nearby hotel (we stayed at an Airbnb). We were picked up in a minibus that then took us to a larger tour bus. This seems like a standard practice as we were with different companies and this seemed to be the case every time.

This day we were with Reykjavik Excursions . Their buses are awesome and come equipped with WiFi and USB ports to charge your phone.

The tour itself was relatively pleasant. We got to see some awesome sights and the weather wasn’t terrible. Our tour guide was rather dark however. Instead of just warning us about what we should and shouldn’t do, she told us horrible stories, like a mother and daughter watching their husband/father drown to death. But besides the gruesome stories, the tour was good.

Our Stops on the Tour

Our first stop was a small hike that led to Mýrdalsjökull glacier. We snapped a few pictures and then hopped back on the bus to our next destination.

Final Thoughts on the South Shore Tour

Overall, we enjoyed the tour and thought it was a good way to start our time in Iceland. For the convenience of free WiFi and USB ports, I’d recommend Reykjavik Excursions for your tour bookings. Not all companies have buses like RE so if they’re something you want double check that your tour operator offers them.

But there is something so unique about experiencing the power of nature so deeply.

Vatnajökull is the largest glaciers in Iceland and the largest glacier in Europe. One of its outlet glaciers will be the next and last destination of the day. We will visit Skaftafell Nature Reserve – one of the most beautiful pars of Iceland – where you will go hiking on a glacier. This will only add more adventure to your day and make it even more memorable. In Skaftafell Nature Reserve you will find numerous of hiking paths but the views over the glacier are simply magnificent. The spectacular views, rugged and wild landscapes will add to the adventure. Fret not, complete guidance about glacier hike and how to commence that will be provided. You will also be equipped with ice axes, harnesses, helmets, and crampons to keep the safety quotient high. Before you leave for glacier hiking, spend few minutes feeling the spellbinding beauty around the area. Like mentioned above, this is an extremely beautiful area. It has been a part of TV shows and different films, including the Game of Thrones, James Bond, and Interstellar.

  • Boat tour on the glacier lagoon
  • Diamond Beach

We will start Day-2 by visiting one of the most stunning part of Iceland, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon . Jokulsarlon is located in Vatnajökull National Park and is by many considered to be the most beautiful place in Iceland. This 200m deep glacier lagoon looks spectacular with the floating and flipping icebergs all around. The ice bergs in the glacier lagoon drop off from Breiðamerkurjokull glacier, which is an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. On Day 1 you will be hiking on another outlet glacier of Vatnajokull, so when visiting this area and participating in those activities you will get a good idea on how big Vatnajokull really is. The whole lagoon is filled with huge chunks of icebergs that are a treat to the eyes. Walk around and experience the serene and calm environment closely. We can promise you that you will want to visit this place again in the future.

man standing and watching the sunset at Diamond Beach in south Iceland

After taking in the views at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon you will be heading just a couple of meters away to the Diamond Beach . Just after witnessing the massive chunks of icebergs in the glacial lagoon, now is the time to experience those icebergs closely. Yes, the icebergs from the stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon are thrown to the Diamond Beach by the massive waves and tides. Diamond Beach is known for the human-sized and naturally polished icebergs, that are sculpted by mother nature. These icebergs from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon crashes at the Beach to form a visually stunning sight. These icebergs look like diamonds and create a beautiful contrast against the black sand, under the sun. You will find massive icebergs to smaller ice blocks in varied shapes and sizes in the shades of white and blue

If you would like to know how to photograph the northern lights, we recommend that you read this article.

You will also find a tablet in the bus with information about the northern lights and how to photograph them.

For winter tours in Iceland, wear warm clothing as first layer and waterproof outdoor jacket and pants as a second layer. Hiking boots with high ankle protection is ideal for the glacier hike and ice cave experience. You will get crampons to put on your boots before you go to the glacier. If you do not have hiking boots, you have to rent them at the time of booking. A hat and gloves are also ideal for the glacier tours.

Yes, you need sturdy hiking boots for the glacier hike. They have to have hard sole and be tight around the ankle. If you don’t have hiking boots, you can rent them in all sizes when booking the tour. It is also possible to rent the shoes at the glacier hiking location.

The glacier hike is considered to be safe for anyone in good physical condition. You have to be able to walk for about an hour up and down on slopes and uneven surface.

We offer all safety equipment necessary and you will always be hiking with a professional and certified glacier guide.

This is always a personal choice and depends on your physical health at the time of the glacier hike. We have had pregnant women on this glacier hike but not all pregnancies are the same. We recommend that you read the description of the tour to get a good idea and ask your doctor about it.

Iceland South Coast Tour: A Day Trip To Vik From Reykjavik

The Iceland South Coast is marked by some of the most incredible natural landscapes on the planet. Thundering waterfalls, picturesque villages, black sand beaches and massive glaciers are the top sights on an Iceland South Coast Tour. We joined a day trip to Vik from Reykjavik to explore some of the best sights in Iceland – and it did not disappoint!

Why Take an Iceland South Coast Day Trip to Vik?

We had not originally planned to take a day trip to Vik during our long layover in Iceland – but that all changed after we got our first glimpse of the scenic Icelandic countryside.

On our first full day in Iceland, we toured the magnificent sights on the Golden Circle . We were blown away by the natural beauty of Iceland – and yet we were only seeing a small piece of it. By the end of our tour, we knew we had to experience more, even though our trip to Iceland was just for a few days.

Vik Tour Iceland

Intrigued by the vast, volcanic lands, our interests were piqued by the picturesque south coast of Iceland and the quaint town of Vik. At first, we considered taking a public bus to Vik, Iceland from Reykjavik – but quickly dismissed the thought. There are too many sights and things to do between Reykjavik and Vik that are not accessible by public transport. Instead, we scouted Vik tours from Reykjavik.

While riding the bus back to Reykjavik after our day on the Golden Circle, we used the on-board Wi-Fi to find the best Reykjavik to Vik South Iceland tours. We quickly booked our Vik tour for the following day to explore Iceland’s South Coast!

Iceland South Coast Tour

The tour itinerary for our trip to Iceland’s South Coast included four popular sights, plus one unexpected stop that wasn’t listed on the tour plan. Our day included seeing two waterfalls, hiking through snow to see a glacier, spending time in Vik (on two of Iceland’s black sand beaches) and visiting a folk museum.

Less popular with visitors than the Golden Circle, the Iceland South Coast sights do not have large welcome centers – but they weren’t so far off the trodden path that we needed any special gear, either. (More about what you will need for your day trip to the South Coast of Iceland at the end of the post…along with a helpful map link!)

The Start of Our Tour to the South Shore of Iceland

City views, Reykjavik, Iceland, winter

Many Iceland day tours to Vik and the South Shore of Iceland depart from the main BSI Terminal – as ours did. The company we booked with provided pick up locations throughout the Reykjavik city center, so all we had to do was walk to the meeting point from our Airbnb . We didn’t need to wait long for our ride to arrive and we were shuttled to the BSI Terminal.

Once there, we easily found the South Coast bus and were warmly greeted by our tour guide, Gus. Immediately, we knew our day would be an entertaining one. We found Icelandic people to be welcoming, humorous and sometimes downright quirky. Gus was all of those things – and we felt we definitely lucked out by having him as our South Coast Tour guide.

For example, Gus’s name isn’t really Gus. He has a much longer, difficult-to-say Icelandic name that he jokingly tried to get us to pronounce. Rather than strictly informing us the importance of staying on schedule, he let us know that anyone delaying the departure of the bus would be required to sing karaoke for the group. Throughout the day, he peppered the standard script with personal stories that gave depth to the Iceland sights we visited. Having a fun and friendly Vik tour guide can make all of the difference!

Ring Road and Iceland Scenery

Snowy roads in Iceland Golden Circle during winter

We left the bus terminal and headed for the Ring Road, Iceland’s Route 1 that circles the island and connects Reykjavik to South Iceland. Like a city’s outer belt freeway linking suburbs, the Ring Road connects the villages and towns around Iceland.

The interior of the Iceland, however, is vacant of people and is mostly open land consisting of lava fields and glaciers. Of the 330,000 Icelandic citizens, 75% live in the capital, Reykjavik. The remaining 25% reside is the villages and towns near the shore.

On our Iceland winter tour, the bus maneuvered flawlessly over the snowy road allowing us to sit back, relax and take in the incredible Icelandic scene outside our window.

South Coast Iceland Stop #1: Skogafoss Waterfall

Winter scene at Skogafoss Waterfall, Iceland

The first stop on our tour is one of the top South Iceland points of interest: the Skogafoss Waterfall. The thundering Skogafoss is one of the biggest Iceland waterfalls and a must-see sight on the Iceland south shore. It has a width of 80 feet and falls 200 feet to the pools below, before continuing along the Skoga River to the coast.

From the top of the waterfall views stretch across the land to the sea. Our winter visit, however, kept us from climbing the stairs to the side to the viewing platform, as they were covered in a thick layer of slick ice. Instead, we marveled at the thousands of icicles clinging to the cliff wall, created by the Skogafoss Falls’ spray.

South Iceland Tour Stop #2: Solheimajokull Glacier

Iceland's South Coast Hiking to Solheimajokull Glacier JetSetting Fools

Our second stop in southern Iceland was at a famous glacier, Solheimajokull. We departed the bus and followed Gus for a half mile on a snow-packed trail. Gus, who wore winterized clothing, confidently led the group.

The valley spread out to our left; small hills rose to our right – and with the Icelandic landscape covered in white snow, it looked as barren as the moon. When Solheimajokull glacier was in sight, we gathered around Gus as he pointed out the glacier, which was necessary, as it was almost entirely covered in snow.

Solheimajokull, which translates to Home of the Sun Glacier, is about 8.5 miles long. The size of the glacier, which has been measured regularly since the 1930s, varies with the climate. It can grow and shrink in the same year. Since 1995, however, it has been shrinking more than growing and it is believed that at the current rate of melting ice, in 100-200 years’ time there will no longer be any glaciers on Iceland.

Combine Your South Shore Iceland Tour with Glacier Climbing

A glacier hiking group passed us, complete with helmets and crampons for the walk. With already numb toes, we were all too happy to be heading back to the warmth of the bus, but – in better weather – we think Glacier Hiking in Iceland would be an awesome experience. Find out more about the combo Iceland South Shore Tour with Glacier Hiking – and book it here !

Iceland South Coast Tour Stop #3: Black Sand Beaches at Vik

WintBlack Sand Beaches at Vik, Icelander at

The next stop on our tour was Vik and the popular black sand beach in Iceland. As one of the top South Iceland attractions, we were allotted ample time to explore the village and Icelandic coast.

Vik, which is about 110 miles from Reykjavik and has a population of around 300 residents, is the southernmost village in Iceland. Interestingly, however, it is the only Iceland coastal village without a fishing port. Instead, it is known for its black sand beaches and basalt rock sea stacks that sit just offshore.

Things To Do in Vik, Iceland

Black sand beach, Vik, Iceland

For our tour, Vik was not only an attraction, but also the lunch stop. The small town boasts a handful of places to eat, a stunning black sand beach that fronts the village, a historic church and more gorgeous Iceland landscapes.

Lunch in Vik, Iceland

The small recommended Vik restaurant (not included in the tour) was warm and inviting, but we had brought along a picnic lunch in order to have more time on the beach. That’s correct; we planned to have a picnic lunch on the beach in Iceland in January!

Vik Black Sand Beach Iceland

View of the Black Sand Beach in Vik, Iceland

When we climbed over the dunes to the Vik beach, we were in awe. The powder-fine, charcoal black beach was half covered in a fresh dusting of snow, creating a striking contrast. We found a perch along the rocky breakwater where we could eat as we took in the amazing Southern Iceland scenery.

Reynisdrangar Rock Formation

Snow covered beach, Vik, Iceland

From the Vik Black Sand Beach, there is an incredible view of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. The surf pounded the shoreline and the rock formations looked like frozen figurines.

How these famous rocks in Iceland came to stand in the ocean off the tip of the peninsula is shrouded in folklore. One legend is that trolls tried to drag a 3-masted ship onto the beach at Vik, but the ship turned to rock before they accomplished their task. Another tale is that a woman was kidnapped by two trolls who took her out to sea. When her husband found out, they solidified in their tracks and still stand there today.

Vikurkirkja: Vik I Myrdal Church

Church in the snow, Vik, Iceland

Topping a hill and overlooking the village is the Vik I Myrdal Church, Vikurkirkja (also called Reyniskirkja). The small white wooden church was built in the 1930s. In the wintertime, it nearly blended in with the blanket of snow, made visible only by its rising red steeple and rooftop.

Reynisfjara Black Beach Iceland

Reynisfjara Black Beach Iceland at winter

After the rest of our group finished lunch in the restaurant, we boarded the tour bus and made our way to the west side of the peninsula. There the Reynisdrangar rocks stand on the famous Iceland black sand Reynisfjara Beach.

The small black sand beach provides an even better view of Reynisdrangar. On the tip of the point, columns of basalt rock rise in a cliff and provide a home to a variety of Iceland sea birds. At the base, visitors can wander inside an enormous cliffside cave. In ideal weather, adventurous travelers can hike to the top of the cliff for a stunning viewpoint across Southern Iceland.

Being such a narrow beach makes the powerful waves dangerous – and we were warned of their unpredictability. The waves travel a long distance across the Atlantic Ocean, uninterrupted – and have the ability to quickly sneak up on unsuspecting tourists and drag them out to sea.

While I was focused on capturing the incredible scene through my camera lens, Kris started shouting my name, warning me of an approaching wave. I clumsily tried to avoid it, falling face-forward onto the beach and was rewarded with a mouthful of black Icelandic sand. Fortunately, I escaped with nothing more than wet feet, a heaping dose of embarrassment and a terrible picture.

Although the Vik village and it’s black sand beaches were a highlight of the tour, there’s still a few more things to do in South Iceland as we made our way back from Vik to Reykjavik.

South Coast Iceland Tour Stop #4: Skogar Museum

Iceland's South Coast Skogar Museum JetSetting Fools

When we learned that a museum was on the itinerary for Iceland’s South Coast, we were less than enthusiastic about our visit. It’s not that we didn’t want to see the museum, there are just so many South Iceland attractions that are outside – and we were most interested in the natural wonderlands of Iceland.

Once we arrived at the Skogar Museum, however, we quickly changed our minds – as it was far from an ordinary museum. Not stuffy or formal, Skogar Museum is packed with 15,000 historical artifacts from around Iceland.

Resembling a treasure trove, the museum was started more than 80 years ago when a local 14-year-old boy began collecting things that other people were throwing away. His collection grew and he turned his assemblage into one of the most interesting museums in Iceland. Everything on-site was acquired through family, friends or friends-of-friends, guaranteeing the authenticity.

The pieces tell the story of the Icelandic people and how they survived in a world without the most typical resources like metal, wood and clay. Instead, they used materials that were abundant, like fish bones and wool. Some of the more notable items were a first-edition Icelandic bible printed in 1584 and a large restored Icelandic fishing boat.

South Coast Tour Iceland Stop #5: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in winter, Iceland

The winter sun had already set by the time we made it to the last stop: Seljalandsfoss, one of the most famous South Iceland waterfalls.

The Seljalandsfoss Waterfall streams over the edge of a cliff in front of a cave. The cave makes it possible to walk behind the waterfall for a unique look at the natural sight. However, again, the icy conditions made it impossible to take the path into the cave. Instead, we settled for the striking view of Seljalandsfoss from the front.

Our late afternoon arrival meant that it was already getting dark (the official sunset was at 5pm – but because the sun sits so low in the sky, it starts to get dark around 3:30pm). Much to our surprise, beams of light illuminate Seljalandsfoss, giving us a unique perspective against the darkening skies.

Seljalandsfoss is about the same height as Skogafoss, falling 200 feet, but isn’t nearly as wide. Rather than the water roaring down, it seemed to drop in long, sheer ribbons and collected in pools of deep blue. Watching the falls as the winter sky turned moody was an incredible way to end our day touring Iceland’s South Coast!

Vik Iceland Bus Tour vs Iceland Self Drive Tour

Iceland's South Coast Tour with Reykjavik Excursions JetSetting Fools

Rather than sorting the details of planning our own South Iceland Itinerary, we were content joining a tour to see the Iceland south coast sights. Our day was stress-free, incredibly entertaining and included all of the attractions we wanted to see.

However, DIY travelers can plan their own South Iceland adventure by renting a car and making the trip on their own. Before setting off on a drive from Reykjavik to Vik, we have a few tips.

How far is Vik from Reykjavik?

The distance from Reykjavik to Vik is about 190km (about 110 miles) one way on the Iceland south ring road. From point-to-point, it takes about 2.5 hours – but a Self-Drive Iceland Southern Coast Tour will surely include many more stops along the way.

Map of Southern Iceland

Although we have provided an online South Iceland Attractions Map (above), we highly recommend purchasing a good driving map for your South Iceland tour from Reykjavik. This map gets good ratings by fellow travelers to Iceland.

Vik-Reykjavik Bus

As we previously mentioned, it is possible to visit South Iceland via public bus, but it is not ideal for tourists, unless the village of Vik is the only sight you want to see on your Reykjavik to Vik tour. The public buses do not make stops at Iceland South Coast waterfalls or other attractions.

Iceland South Coast Attractions Tour: What You Will Need

Vik, Iceland, sunset

Whether you decide to join a Reykjavik South Coast Tour or plan your own Self-Drive Iceland South Coast Itinerary, there are a few things you will want to make sure you have for your trip!

Waterproof Shoes and Iceland Weather Gear

On our Iceland South Coast Day Tour, I wore my everyday slip on Skechers , which in hindsight, was a huge mistake. While fine for city walking, they proved to be inadequate for wintertime South Coast Iceland weather. A pair of weatherproof boots would have been a better option, perhaps even in summertime. The weather can change quickly, so we recommend wearing layers and a weather-resistant coat or at least bringing a packable raincoat .

Travel Camera with Zoom Lens

The Iceland southern coast is simply astounding! Rather than using a phone camera to capture the sights, we recommend upgrading to an actual camera with a good lens. On our Southern Iceland day tour, we used our Canon Rebel (our go-to travel camera ) with a 18-135mm lens .

Iceland Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can protect you in the event of flight cancellations or lost luggage , and could be helpful for travelers who get ill or injured abroad. Check rates and consider coverage from a reliable company .

On our South of Iceland Tour, lunch was not included. As mentioned, we were in Vik at lunchtime – and our Iceland tour guide gave recommendations for the best restaurants in Vik. However, we couldn’t imagine sitting inside to eat in such a beautiful place! Instead, we were prepared with a simple picnic lunch that we ate on the Vik black sand beach.
