WTM London Announces Exciting New Areas on the Exhibition Floor

World Travel Market London 2023 , the world’s most influential travel & tourism event, will have three exciting new areas on the exhibition floor this year – Accommodation & Wholesalers, Experiences and Transportation.

The new areas will replace the International Hub and predominantly showcase private-sector and non-destination exhibitors.

The Accommodation & Wholesalers, Experiences and Transportation areas have been launched following extensive research carried out by World Travel Market earlier this year, which identified a trend towards travel purchasing decisions based upon experiences, as opposed to purely destination, particularly among younger generations.

WTM’s behavioural research highlighted the changing habits of the traveller, with Millennials and Gen Z increasingly making travel choices based on experience or bucket lists, as opposed to just the city, country, or region they want to visit.

Juliette Losardo , Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said:

“While Gen X might go to Spain, New York or Paris, the newer generations want to visit a wellness retreat, go white-water rafting, or learn to cook in a local community.

“This year we’ve seen an increase in the number of non-destination exhibitors signing up to WTM London, in response to the shift in requirements of younger travellers, who make travel choices based on what they want to do and experience.

“The new Accommodation & Wholesalers, Transportation & Experience areas of the show tap into this cultural shift, offering a place where buyers can come and see what is new and exciting on offer, all in one place.”

In the Accommodation & Wholesalers area, visitors will find dozens of suppliers, including:

Hilton Hotels & Resorts, a global brand of full-service hotels and resorts and the flagship brand of American multinational hospitality company Hilton; Intrepid Travel Group UK , one of the world’s best-known small-group tour organisers, with over 30 years’ experience of providing adventures across the globe; European Tour Operators Association , the trade association for global and European tour operators and suppliers in European destinations; and Miki Travel , which is one of the largest and most experienced wholesale tour operators in Europe.

Visitors to the Experiences area can find exhibitors such as:

Go City (previously known as Leisure Pass Group) – the world’s largest sightseeing pass business, operating in more than 30 destinations, including London, New York, Sydney and Oahu – and Montparnasse 56 , operator of the Montparnasse Tower Panoramic Observation Deck that offers an incredible panoramic view overlooking the Eiffel Tower and other iconic monuments in Paris, are also waiting to be discovered in the Experiences area.

Sporting events providers are also represented in the Experiences area, with exhibitors including XS2Event and Champions Travel Ltd , both offering access to many of the best events around the world.

Also in the Experience area, City Sightseeing , the ‘hop-on hop-off’ tours; Big Bus Tours which allows travellers to discover places on an open-top bus; and experience company City Cruises Ltd .

Last but not least, in the Transportation area, visitors can meet representatives from companies including car-hire operators and transport providers, such as:

European train ticket and rail pass provider Rail Europe ; car-rental giant Enterprise Rent-A-Car ; German car rental supplier Wheego Mobility ; and Global Passenger Network , an organisation of independent coach companies operating in more than 40 countries around the world.

Also, in the Transportation area will be representatives from the fast-growing river-cruise sector, including 14-ship operator Amadeus River Cruises , Dutch Cruise Line BV – which operates a fleet of nine river ships – and United Rivers AG , provider of tailor-made white label river-cruise operations.

Meanwhile, the subject of experiential travel is widely covered during the WTM London Conference Programme 2023.

The programme includes a session by Lonely Planet Vice President Tom Hall , entitled Captivating Experience-Seekers: Adopting the Next Generation Mindset , on the Innovate Stage on Tuesday 7 November, 10:30 – 11:10.

On Wednesday 8 November, 10:30 – 11:10, Vaishali Patel, Founder and Director, Vaishali Ltd ; Jo Fennell, Head of Sales for Northern Europe, GetYourGuide , and Nishank Gopalkrishnan, Chief Business Officer, TUI Musement , will take part in a panel discussion entitled Curating Unique Customer Experiences Anywhere and Everywhere .

More than 14% new exhibitors sign for World Travel Market London 2023

Thursday, September 14, 2023 Favorite

london tourism fair 2023

World Travel Market London 2023 has signed up more than 14% new exhibitors, ranging from household names to specialist firms and niche brands.

They will make up around 4,000 exhibitors at ExCeL London (6-8th November) to exchange ideas, drive innovation and accelerate their businesses.

High-profile names debuting this year this year include Eurostar – the high-speed international rail service connecting the UK with mainland Europe – and ABBA Voyage, a live concert staged in London with virtual ‘Abbatars’.

Also exhibiting for the first time is the Bermuda Tourism Authority, which is heading to WTM London to highlight its culture, heritage, cuisine, wellness and sustainability offerings.

Other tourism boards making their first appearance at WTM London come from destinations as diverse as Sabah – promoting travel to northern Borneo, in Malaysia – and Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan.

Other new exhibitors from Asia are Ayana Hospitality, which offers luxury resorts and hotels in Indonesia, and Vietnam’s Thien Minh Group, showcasing its wide range of services, such as destination management, hospitality, online solutions and aviation.

Rapidly growing global online travel agency Trip.com Group will be attending to target growth within the European market, while UK-based package holiday specialist HolidayBest will promote its worldwide range of destinations and vacation styles.

Other new exhibitors will be travelling from Turkey, such as the Turkish travel agency association TURSAB, and Salkantay Trekking will be visiting from Peru, where it is a leading tour operator offering treks and adventure tours to Machu Picchu.

Delegates in the technology zone will be able to meet new tech exhibitors such as search marketing agency Vertical Leap, and payments specialist flywire – which exhibited with WTM for the first time this year at WTM Africa and is now coming to WTM London.

Jamari Douglas, VP Marketing & Communications at Bermuda Tourism Authority, Bermuda Tourism Authority said:

“We are beyond excited to be returning to WTM London 2023, bigger and better than ever before. As the market-leading international travel event, there is no better opportunity for us to showcase our special island and we look forward to sharing our latest news and offerings with the trade, alongside fresh perspectives from the organisation’s first ever female CEO, Tracy Berkeley.

“Our presence at WTM reaffirms our commitment to strengthening Bermuda’s presence in the UK market, demonstrated by our ongoing investments, such as our recent House of Bermuda event and brand new Lost Yet Found Campaign.

“The UK is our third largest market after the US and Canada and we’re extremely confident that Bermuda will take its place on the global stage as a leading tourism destination.”

Eurostar Group – formed by the merger of Eurostar and European operator Thalys last year – will be at WTM to showcase its services as well as new branding and livery.

Paul Brindley, Eurostar B2B & Indirect Sales Director, said:

“We are excited to be at WTM in 2023 with our new brand for Eurostar, a vision for growth and providing high-speed rail connectivity throughout Northern Europe to 30 million passengers by 2030!

“It’s an exciting time for sustainable rail travel and, with our new distribution tools, we are looking forward to meeting existing and new partners from around the world and continuing to build strong ethical partnerships.”

Launched in May 2022, ABBA Voyage is now booking until May 26th, 2024.

Bernie Patry-Makin, Travel Trade Manager at ABBAVoyage.com, commented:

“We are excited to be exhibiting at WTM London 2023.

“It presents us with a fantastic opportunity to showcase the spectacular ABBA Voyage in front of a large community of international travel and tourism industry buyers. We look forward to meeting with clients old and new over the course of the three days.”

Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said:

“We are delighted to welcome new exhibitors to this year’s event, ranging from major destinations and well-established international brands to niche operators and hi-tech firms.

“They’ve all seen how they can play their part at the world’s most influential travel and tourism event.

“The list of new exhibitors – as well as the thousands that we’re welcoming back to our stands – shows how we help the global travel community to come together to shape the future of the industry.

“Buyers attending WTM London can meet new and established clients, seal business deals and be inspired with fresh ideas for 2024 onwards.”

World Travel Market London 2023: A Three-day Dive into the Future of Global Travel

Publish Time:2023-08-21 18:34:14 Source: Travel Daily News

【Introduction】:World Travel Market London 2023, has announced details of its conference programme, with high-profile speakers and seminars.

World Travel Market London 2023, has announced details of its conference programme, with high-profile speakers and seminars.

More than 60 conference sessions are lined up, empowering the global travel community, and reminding them they have the Power to Change travel.

The conference programme will include eight new tracks across three stages over three days, taking place at ExCeL London, from 6-8 November 2023. In a move away from previous years, the 2023 conference stages will be named Discover, Elevate and Innovate – a reflection of their goal.

Furthermore, in response to the demand in 2022 – which saw 9,102 visitors attend the WTM London Conference sessions – stage sizes have been increased, and rather than one main stage, WTM will host three equally important stages across the event.

The eight conference tracks will be titled Sustainability, Technology, Geo-Economics, Emerging Markets, Consumer Trends, Marketing, Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and Experience and aim to help the global travel community succeed and thrive, by informing, entertaining, and influencing their business decisions.

In another first, the Discover Stage will feature a new layout designed to support networking. Table-based seating, rather than traditional conference-style chairs, will promote networking between sessions, which will also include icebreakers, storytellers, and socialising during breaks.

Some of the key sessions taking place, listed by day, are:

Monday 6th November

The Ministers' Summit at World Travel Market in association with UNWTO and WTTC: In its 17th year, this important event in the WTM London calendar brings together the largest gathering of dignitaries from around the world to discuss and ratify key tourism agreements. The Summit will take place on Day One of WTM London 2023. This is a change from previous years, when it has taken place on Day Two and signifies the increasing importance of the Summit to the worldwide travel and tourism industry.

Also on Monday 6th November, attendees can look forward to the release of WTM's new research WTM Presents…A Global Travel Outlook. Delegates will gain valuable insights into the trends shaping the future of travel with a presentation of the new WTM Global Travel Report, supported by renowned researchers at Oxford Economics. This session will give a voice to the changing needs of travellers, emerging and growing destinations, and uncover behaviours and trends for 2024 and beyond.

Tuesday 7th November

Diversity & Inclusion Summit (D&I): This important Summit launch will tackle why a travel business can perform better with diverse workforces, and the importance of inclusivity in the development of leisure travel strategy. Fostering sense of belonging with consideration for under-represented groups will ensure that travel is accessible to all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background. Amongst the sessions, Darren Edwards, a record-breaking disabled adventurer, will examine the stigma surrounding disability and will explore ways in which businesses can overcome subconscious biases.

Technology Summit: The Technology Summit will cover sessions such as Building Cities for Smart Tourism; the Future of Technology; and AI – Boundless Opportunities for Change in the Travel Sector.

Also, on Tuesday 7th November, on the Innovate Stage, the travel community will hear from Tom Hall, Vice President at Lonely Planet, who will review how changes in traveller behaviour and priorities have shifted the landscape of travel.

Wednesday 8th November

Marketing Summit: Marketing sessions will cover data-driven; storytelling and engaging with influencers. Wednesday's sessions will also cover the future of marketing and digital tools in travel marketing.

Sustainability Summit: Sustainability is still facing many barriers in the travel industry and the summit discovers how education, socio-economic benefits and effective funding can drive positive change and encourage the adoption of sustainable practices throughout the sector.

Among sessions: Where Next? Reimagining tourism in a constantly changing climate discovers what good tourism looks like as climate and biodiversity challenges worsen.

In addition, WTM London 2023 will be rounded off on Wednesday 8th November by a keynote speaker, whose identity will be revealed soon.

Brooke Gilbertson, International Conference Manager of WTM London, said:

"We couldn't be more pleased with the great line-up of speakers and panellists headlining at this year's event. For those seeking a macro view of the travel industry and a deeper understanding of the forces shaping it, WTM London 2023 is a must-attend show with speakers coming from every corner of the world to spread their wisdom on every element of the travel industry."

The Luxury Travel Fair returns to the Olympia National Gallery Level for 2023. In previous years guests kayaked down one of South America's most epic rivers, took to the skies in a helicopter and descended a dangerous volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At least, they did vicariously, through the stories of adventurers including Pip Stewart, Tommy Clarke and Aldo Kane – three of the experts who assembled to share their intrepid experiences and answer questions from the floor.

The Ultimate Guide to London’s Top Attractions in 2023

london tourism fair 2023

London is chock-a-block with so-called “ must-see attractions. ” Aside from perhaps New York City, London feels like it has more things to do per square foot than anywhere else in the world. But with so much to see and do, I always advise people to think carefully about what they are genuinely interested in doing . Don’t get overwhelmed by the hype. No one should feel like they haven’t seen the “real London” just because they see a particular attraction. A part of visiting a new city is just exploring it. And if you try to hop from sight to sight, you’ll miss the real London hidden between and behind these attractions.

london tourism fair 2023

That said, I want to give you a loose idea of what’s worth your precious time and money. So here is my list of the most essential sights in London. Not just the most popular but the places that really help tell the city’s life story. I love this list because it combines so many free attractions making it super budget friendly. It is an amalgamation of historical sights, key places that changed the face of London, foodie finds and beautiful galleries. Take a good read through this post and try to pick and choose two or three attractions that really call out to you. And your particular sensibilities. This is definitely a highlights tour and features the most popular attractions. If you’re looking for something more unique, check out our Hidden Gems London Guide .

Remember: don’t try to see it all. Leave some room for your own unique discoveries! With this guide, you’ll be sure to make the most of your trip to this fantastic city! If it’s your first time in London and you want more tips on visiting, check out our London 101 Guide .

The Tower of London

Perhaps the most historic of all the landmarks in London is the great  Tower of London.  This castle has stood here for centuries; it has seen the crownings and passings of England’s Kings and Queens. It held prisoners and traitors, including Anne Boleyn, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Guy Fawkes. All the while silently watching, unchanged, as the rest of the city grew and transformed around it.

london tourism fair 2023

The fortress dates all the way back to the 11th century. The first structure was the White Tower, built for William the Conqueror in 1078. As the monarchy and power of England grew, so did the fortress. Today tourists can enter through its once impenetrable gates to explore the interior and various buildings. Inside you will see a showcase of England’s rich history, explore the prisoner’s cells, see the precious Crown Jewels, and sit in the Kings and Queen’s private bed chambers. My favourite part is the intimate Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula. This precious church is the burial site of many important figures, including Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Sir Thomas More.

Beef Eater Guides

But to me, taking one of the Beef Eater guided tours is what makes a visit to the Tower of London really worthwhile. These are included in your price of admission and are one of the best ways to feel like the history all around you is suddenly coming alive. Beefeaters, officially known as the Yeomen Warders, are ceremonial guards at the Tower of London. They are an iconic symbol of the city because of their distinctive red and gold uniforms. They were originally installed in the 14th century as guards for the prisoners of the Tower.

But today, their role is as ambassadors for the Tower of London. They take visitors around the most important parts of the building. And use their incredible storytelling abilities to take you on a journey back in time. Even after your tour, they are always around the answer all your questions. They are an endless source of knowledge and are truly an under-utilized resource for visitors. So don’t be afraid to talk to them and learn some secrets you’d otherwise never have the chance to hear.

Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

There is no doubt that when you picture London, the first image that comes to mind is the great golden bell tower called  Big Ben!  And the adjoining  Houses of Parliament  stand on the edge of the Thames River. These buildings have greeted visitors to the city since the 11th century. And today still serves as the heart of British democracy. Here, bills and laws are debated, and the people’s will is brought to light.

london tourism fair 2023

While the Palace of Westminster dates back hundreds of years, Big Ben was only added in the 19th century. During the restoration of the entire complex after a devastating fire, the new architect wanted to create a focal point for the building. The Tower was completed in 1859, and it got its nickname “Big Ben” from Sir Benjamin Hall. Hall was the commissioner of works during the building’s construction and was well known for his loud booming voice. Although everyone still calls it  Big Ben , the Bell Tower is officially named the  Elizabeth Tower . In honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Exploring the  Houses of Parliament

Although visitors can take guided tours of the  Houses of Parliament  to learn about its history and see debates in action, I prefer to enjoy its beauty from the exterior for free. Start from the opposite side of the river to take in the impressive size and stature of the whole building along the banks of the Thames. Then, walk across  Westminster Bridge . And watch as the building grows and grows in size and detail as you approach. Finish up by wandering through the  Victoria Tower Gardens  to the south. Here, you can have a unique view of the buildings that not many people get the chance to see.

The National Portrait Gallery

While many people might put the  British Museum  at the top of their list, for me, it’s all about the  National Galleries . While the British Museum has the word “British” in its name, it is filled with objects they’ve “acquired” from around the world. Many of which have an intensely contested ownership.

london tourism fair 2023

When you come all the way to Britain, it seems only fitting to look at some works of art that portray the country’s history and English artists. And you can find all that inside the  National Portrait Gallery .  Their collection features hundreds of portraits of famous Britain throughout history. In the curves of a person’s face, you can learn more about the person who shaped British history and culture over the centuries. There are monarchs, politicians, writers, and musicians. As well as self-portraits from artists who captured these historical figures’ most intimate details and expressions. Etched in oil and veneer for eternity.

National Portrait Gallery Collection

Long before there were newspapers, let alone Instagram and Twitter, these portraits were the only physical interpretation of many iconic people like William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I, Henry VIII, and even Sir Isaac Newton. The newer portraits of notable royals and icons provide a different perspective into the lives of these people we  feel  we know so well through the media. The artists who paint them capture a moment in time and a slice of their essence that is sometimes hard to capture in photographs. It’s a fabulous collection and worth taking the time to explore for yourself.

Westminster abbey.

One of the most powerful buildings in the city is  Westminster Abbey . While we might view the Houses of Parliament, right next door, as the current powerhouse of the city, in ages past, the power lay in the hands of the church. Just walking past, I always feel like you can sense the dense and storied histories that have taken place inside. This building has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years and is the most important religious and cultural landmark in the United Kingdom.

london tourism fair 2023

As such, the abbey has been the site of many royal coronations, weddings, and funerals. Queen Elizabeth II had her coronation and was married here in the abbey. After her death, as a full circle moment, it was also here where her final funerary ceremony took place. And it will be here inside Westminster Abbey, where King Charles will be crowned monarch in 2023. There have been so many televised moments in history that have taken place here. Exploring the building for yourself feels like being a part of that history.

Architecture and Icons

Inside you’ll be able to admire the amazing Gothic architecture. The ornate stained-glass windows, intricate stone carvings, and a soaring nave create an awe-inspiring sense of space. In the multitude of little side chapels, you can find the resting places of various prominent figures in British history. Including monarchs, statesmen, writers, and scientists.

london tourism fair 2023

Visiting the Church

Although Westminster Abbey requires a hefty  admission fee  to enter, I find that if you’re interested in history and architecture, this place is a worthwhile way to spend your time and money. If you really have your heart on seeing the interior, but the fees don’t fit into your budget, consider attending a church service.

Services are free and welcome to all. You won’t be able to explore or take pictures, but you will get a unique experience inside. During the church service, you have the unique opportunity to listen to the incredible church choir. It’s amazing how their voices fill the space with an ethereal sound. Sit and take in the views all around you. And as you leave, you’ll get the chance to look around at least a little bit. It’s a great alternative to explore the interiors for yourself, at least in some minor way.

Borough Market

Across the river, in Southwark, is where you can find one of London’s most vibrant communities. Since the 13th century, traders and shoppers have been making the journey across London Bridge to shop inside the walls of one of the most popular foodie destinations;  Borough Market .  The market offers visitors a friendly and bustling atmosphere where you can buy fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, meats, seafood and baked goods. In addition to the fresh food, dozens of street food stalls sell everything from British classics to international fare. The market is open every day but Monday, although some traders only open their stalls on the weekends.

london tourism fair 2023

As such a big attraction, the market does garner large crowds. But instead of being put off, just lean into the action and try to join in on the energetic ambiance inside! Borough Market is committed to sustainability and ethical food practices, with many of its vendors using only locally-sourced and organic ingredients. As well as incorporating environmentally-friendly packaging and techniques into their best practices. This kind of commitment to ethical consumption is unique to this market and makes you feel good about the food you’re putting into your body and the vendors you get to support!  Check out our guided tour  for a complete guide to exploring the market!

Monument of Great Fire of London

One of the events that changed the entire history of London, and even perhaps the British Empire, was  the Great Fire of 1666 . On September 2nd, 1666, a small kitchen fire broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane in the early morning hours. All the odds seemed to be against London when the fire broke out. No one was there that morning to extinguish the tiny sparks that started the blaze. As the fire spread, it fed on the flammable thatch on the roofs and wooden walls that lined every building in London.

Winds were especially strong that morning, and the fire began to get out of control in mere minutes. The fire raged for four days, and over that time, it destroyed over 400 acres of London. Burning down over 13,00 homes and leaving over 100,000 people homeless. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the old medieval St. Paul’s Cathedral, were destroyed in the blaze.

london tourism fair 2023

The Great Fire of London

But most importantly, the city’s commercial and financial centres were destroyed. Including many of the warehouses, banks, and trading houses that were essential to its economy. Businesses closed, and unemployment was widespread. But in juxtaposition, the great fire also destroyed many of the unsanitary slums and overcrowded neighbourhoods. Many of which had contributed to the spread of the plague. After the fire, building regulations were passed to ensure all new buildings were made of more fireproof brick and stone materials.

london tourism fair 2023

Monument to the Great Fire

To memorialize this fire, a great monument was commissioned. The  Monument to the Great Fire of London  is a stone column, 202 feet tall. It was built at this exact height, as from this spot, if you laid the column on its side, it is 202 feet to the point where the great fire of London started. While the Monument looks very narrow, it actually contains a narrow spiral staircase. Inside, visitors can climb to a viewing platform at the top. From the platform, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.

The column is decorated with various carvings and inscriptions that describe the history of the Great Fire and the construction of the Monument itself. The Monument offers visitors a unique perspective on the city and its history. It is a reminder of the devastating fire that shaped London’s development for centuries to come.

V&A Museum

My favourite museum in the entire city has got to be the  Victoria and Albert Museum , more commonly known as the V&A. Founded in 1852 by  Queen Victoria  and  Prince Albert , the aim of the museum was to create a “schoolroom for everyone.” Britain was falling behind in the world of arts and culture at the time. Queen Victoria felt that creating this hub of artistic ingenuity it would help inspire the future of British arts and sciences.

Today, the V&A’s collection spans over 5,000 years of human creativity. No matter your interest, you can find something for yourself in these walls. Everything from fine art to fashion, furniture, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and more has a home here at the V&A. Entrance the museum is free, so you can pop in and out as you like without having to commit to spending the entire day here because you paid so much for admission. Although, you can easily spend a whole week within the ever-expansive galleries.

london tourism fair 2023

V&A Collection Highlights

Highlights from the 2023 collection include an exhibition featuring the glittering world of musical theatre! The museum pulled items from its fashion collection to explore the world of craftmanship of iconic musicals, from My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon and Wicked! The Cast Courts are one of the most awe-inspiring parts of the museum. These galleries are a collection of casts of the world’s most famous sculptures, including Michelangelo’s David and Trajan’s Column. It feels like travelling around the world in just one part of the building! Lastly, if you love sparkling things, head to the Jewellery collection. Here you’ll find one of the world’s most renowned jewellery collections that span over 3,000 years. Over 6,000 pieces, from ancient Egyptian amulets to contemporary designer jewellery, record the world’s history in fashion accessories!

Columbia Road Flower Market

For a slice of East London, one of the most vibrant parts of the city, head over to the  Columbia Road Flower Market .  The best-smelling market in the town.  The history of the Columbia Road Flower Market dates back to the mid-19th century. For over 100 years, this market has drawn in locals and tourists alike looking to buy fresh flowers or just explore the beautiful local flora for sale. The market is open every Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm. If you want to see the full extent of the vendor’s wares before they sell out, get there early in the morning.

london tourism fair 2023

Seasons of the Market

Different traders line the entire Columbia Road from  Gosset Street  to  Barnet Grove . Some of these growers have been selling here for generations, representing an important part of the community. From Spring to Winter, there is always a selection of seasonal flowers on sale. I love how the flower selection changes throughout the year.

london tourism fair 2023

In the springtime, the rainbow of tulips excites everyone for the warm weather that begins to arrive. In the summer, the smell of freshly cut roses welcomes you into the market. When fall comes, giant sunflowers combat the incoming cold weather with their sunny disposition. In the winter, the market is awash with Christmas cheer. Christmas trees are for sale on every corner. And holly, dried berries and bright green ivy are ready to deck the halls!

In addition to the vendors, you can also explore the areas around the market. Little alleys that branch off in different directions sell everything from iced coffees (or mulled wine in the winter) to vintage clothing and handicrafts from the local artisans.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

For anyone interested in theatre, history or even architecture, a visit to  Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre  is such an immensely powerful experience. The Globe Theatre that stands on the banks of the Thames was where William Shakespeare’s productions took place back when it was first built in 1599. Sadly, the original building burnt down in 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII. Although it was rebuilt once more in 1642, this incarnation would only last another 20 years. When it was pulled down to make room for tenement apartments. Losing this piece of Shakespearean history potentially forever…

london tourism fair 2023

Rebuilding the Globe

But in 1994, a modern reconstruction of the theatre began to be built. Thanks to the efforts of actor and director  Sam Wanamaker . Wanamaker had a vision to rebuild the theatre. But it would be done using historical records of the original building, using only materials and techniques available during the 16th century.

Although this would take years and years compared to simply redoing it in a modern way, they wanted the building to feel as authentic to the original version that Shakespeare himself stood inside. It was completed in 1997 and opened to the public as both museum and a functional theatre. The only modern interferences were to do with fireproofing to ensure this building didn’t suffer the same fate as the first. The theatre is designed to resemble an original Elizabethan theatre, with open-air seating and a thatched roof. Giving visitors a glimpse into what theatre-going would have been like in Shakespeare’s time.

london tourism fair 2023

Tickets for Plays at the Globe

Every year a different series of Shakespeare’s plays are held inside, allowing visitors to watch these performances in the same space they were first performed. You can opt for a seat in one of the upper levels or buy a ticket for “the yard,” where they still offer standing-room tickets.

While standing the entire show can be taxing, it’s an experience unlike any other. Tickets in the yard cost as little as £5 – £10. But for those who prefer to get seated tickets in the gallery, this costs anywhere from £25 – £65.

A peaceful walk in  Hyde Park  is a relaxing activity almost all year round. Hyde Park is one of London’s largest parks, covering an area of 350 acres! The park has been host to the city’s social and political history for centuries. It has been the site of numerous protests, demonstrations, and events. Including the famous Great Exhibition of 1851, which was held in the park’s Crystal Palace. You could spend an entire day wandering the park, exploring all its hidden corners and most impressive sights. But if you’re just looking for the highlights read on!

london tourism fair 2023

Sights in Hyde Park

Speakers’ corner  on the east side of the park is where people have for hundreds of years congregated to practice their right to free (and loud) speech. Towards the southeast corner of the park is the great  Serpentine Lake.  The Serpentine Lake is a stunning place to sit and enjoy a picnic, stroll along the lakeside, or rent a paddleboat, to take in all the tranquil scenery. At the park’s south end, you’ll find the gleaming golden  Albert Memorial .  The Albert Memorial  depicts the image of Prince Albert, dedicated by his adoring wife, Queen Victoria.

london tourism fair 2023

My favourite part of Hyde Park is the  Italian Gardens  located in the northwest corner. The beautiful and serene oasis is decorated with intricate fountains, sculptures, and ornate flower beds designed in the 1860s. Although Italian gardens might seem an odd choice for an English park, the gardens and surrounding buildings were inspired by those found in Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s stately home on the Isle of Wight.

The  Peter Pan Statue  is the most memorable statue of all those in the park .  The Peter Pan Statue is located in the northern corner of Hyde Park. It features a bronze statue of Peter Pan surrounded by characters from the novel of the same name. But the best part of exploring the park is simply soaking in the atmosphere. And watching locals out and about with their families, pets and loved ones. Plus, it’s completely free to explore. Perfect when looking for some downtime on a busy trip to London.

london tourism fair 2023

Tower Bridge

Another one of the most iconic landmarks of the city of London is the enormous, ornate bridge that crosses the River Thames,  Tower Bridge . While many people might think they have to book a tour, ranging from £12 – £26, I believe that to best experience the beauty and architectural majesty of Tower Bridge, you simply have to walk across it. A completely free experience.

london tourism fair 2023

The best place to get a gorgeous bridge view is from  the Horsleydown steps . These can be found on the south side of the bridge. A small set of steps leads you into a hidden passageway off Shad Thames Street. You are then led down onto a small beach where you can sit on the stairs and get this fantastic close-up riverside view of Tower Bridge. Set against the backdrop of skyscrapers behind it.

london tourism fair 2023

Architecture

Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge is an exemplary model of the Victorian Gothic style within its twin towers. Before its construction, there was no other way for people to get across the river at this point. And with the city’s continuous expansion east, the need for a pedestrian and horse-drawn vehicle crossing became dire. While a fixed bridge would have been a quick solution, this was not an option along the busy Thames River. Sailing ships frequented the nearby ports and couldn’t pass under a fixed bridge. The ingenious new design consisted of two towers connected by a suspension bridge. And a central section that could be raised to allow tall ships to pass through.

london tourism fair 2023

Some travel guides might tell you that you have to spend one day of your trip to London making a day trip to another city. And sure, if you had lots of time, that is an excellent side-trip, but for those travellers coming to London for only a week, a day trip is a massive chunk of time you might rather spend in the city. If you want to  feel  like you’ve gotten away from the big city but, in reality, are just a tube ride away, I always recommend first-time visitors make a trip out to Greenwich.

Greenwich is a picturesque borough located along the Thames River. About 30 minutes from central London on the Tube. Or you can take a riverboat along the water to Greenwich, which takes just under an hour. This is always my suggestion as you get to experience the riverside sights of London and learn a little bit about the history of the waterways.

london tourism fair 2023

Attractions in Greenwich

The city of Greenwich, while small, is packed with rich history, stunning architecture, and unique attractions. Stepping off the riverboat, you are face to face with the great Cutty Sark, one of the last remaining tea clippers in the world. This boat is permanently docked in Greenwich and open for tours. One of the most iconic landmarks in Greenwich is the Royal Observatory, where visitors can stand on the Prime Meridian line and have one foot in the eastern hemisphere and the other in the Western Hemisphere.

london tourism fair 2023

My favourite building is the Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval College. Sir Christopher Wren, the same architect who built the famed St. Paul’s Cathedral, designed this magnificent building. It is often called the “Sistine Chapel of the UK.” The hall features a breathtaking painted ceiling depicting scenes from British naval history and mythology.

If you get peckish, you head straight to the Greenwich Market. Here you’ll find a dazzling array of market stalls selling various goods, including handmade crafts, vintage clothing, antiques, and jewelry. But the best thing to come here for is the food! Visitors can also sample delicious food from around the world at the many food stalls and cafes in the market, with options ranging from traditional British dishes to exotic street food. The market is lively on weekends, with live music and street performers adding to the festive atmosphere. But the best part of a day trip down to Greenwich is simply to wander its charming town center, with quaint boutique shops, adorable cafes, and picturesque streets.

Morocco, Premier Partner of the WTM London 2023

Two partnerships signed with British TO JET2 and eDreams ODIGEO, the world’s leading travel subscription platform

The Moroccan National Tourism Office (MNTO) is deploying special measures for its participation in the World Travel Market (WTM) London 2023, taking place from 6-8 November.  A strong Moroccan delegation is actively involved in this exhibition, with the presence of 44 professional co-exhibitors and representatives from Morocco’s 12 regions. The delegation is led by the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Adel El Fakir, General Director of the MNTO and Hamid Bentaher, President of the National Tourism Confederation.

A must-attend event for the travel industry, WTM is one of the world’s largest B2B trade events, generating nearly 35 billion Dirhams (2.8 billion GBP) in contracts. For the 2023 edition, Morcco has been announced as Premier Partner. Morocco will benefit from the exceptional branding opportunities and an exclusive presence at the openeing ceremony.

The MNTO is taking advantge of the opportunity to unveil its new stand concept, which will be redeployed at all Moroccan trade events between 2023 and 2024. The Morocco pavillion boasts a record surface area of 760  m², including 130 m² dedicated to the Marrakech-Safi and Agadir-Souss Massa regions, two of the most popular destinations for British tourists.

On the sidelines of the show, the MNTO signed a 5-year partnership with British TO JET2 , the market leader. The primary goal this agreement is to integrate Morocco as a top destination in the programming of the leading British TO. In the first year of the agreement, 17 flights a week will be scheduled from several UK departure points, with this number expected to eventually increase to 28 per week.

The MNTO has also signed a 5-year partnership with eDreams ODIGEO , the world’s leading travel subscription platform, which owns the eDreams, GO Voyages, Opodo and Travellink brands. The purpose of this contract is to triple current annual targets, with an annual growth rate of around 30%.

Through this unprecedented participation at WTM London 2023, the MNTO continues its dynamic “Light In Actio” strategy by deploying its sales force at one of the world’s largest B2B travel industry exhibitions. The aim is to strengthen Morocco’s presence in its traditional markets, and to conquer new growth markets capable of contributing to the rise of Morocco as a destination.

By Jess Sharp , Money team

Money saving trends are constantly popping up on social media - but one in particular has been gaining huge amounts of attention.

Created accidentally by a comedian, loud budgeting is breaking down the taboo of speaking about money.

The idea is based on being firmer/more vocal about your financial boundaries in social situations and setting out what you are happy to spend your money on, instead of "Keeping up with the Joneses".

On TikTok alone, videos published under the hashtag #loudbudgeting have garnered more than 30 million views - and that figure is continuing to climb.

We spoke to Lukas Battle - the 26-year-old who unintentionally created the trend as part of a comedy sketch.

Based in New York, he came up with the term in a skit about the "quiet luxury" hype, which had spread online in 2023 inspired by shows like Succession.

The term was used for humble bragging about your wealth with expensive items that were subtle in their design - for example, Gwyneth Paltrow's  £3,900 moss green wool coat from The Row, which she wore during her ski resort trial...

"I was never a big fan of the quiet luxury trend, so I just kind of switched the words and wrote 'loud budgeting is in'. I'm tired of spending money and I don't want to pretend to be rich," Lukas said.

"That's how it started and then the TikTok comments were just obsessed with that original idea."

This was the first time he mentioned it...

Lukas explained that it wasn't about "being poor" but about not being afraid of sharing your financial limits and "what's profitable for you personally".

"It's not 'skip a coffee a day and you'll become a millionaire'."

While talking money has been seen as rude or taboo, he said it's something his generation is more comfortable doing.

"I've seen more debate around the topic and I think people are really intrigued and attracted by the idea," he said.

"It's just focusing your spending and time on things you enjoy and cutting out the things you might feel pressured to spend your money on."

He has incorporated loud budgeting into his own life, telling his friends "it's free to go outside" and opting for cheaper dinner alternatives.

"Having the terminology and knowing it's a trend helps people understand it and there's no awkward conversation around it," he said.

The trend has been a big hit with so-called American "finfluencers", or "financial influencers", but people in the UK have started practising it as well.

Mia Westrap has taken up loud budgeting by embarking on a no-buy year and sharing her finances with her 11.3k TikTok followers.

Earning roughly £2,100 a month, she spends around £1,200 on essentials, like rent, petrol and car insurance, but limits what else she can purchase.

Clothes, fizzy drinks, beauty treatments, makeup, dinners out and train tickets are just some things on her "red list".

The 26-year-old PHD student first came across the idea back in 2017, but decided to take up the challenge this year after realising she was living "pay check to pay check".

She said her "biggest fear" in the beginning was that her friends wouldn't understand what she was doing, but she found loud budgeting helped.

"I'm still trying my best to just go along with what everyone wants to do but I just won't spend money while we do it and my friends don't mind that, we don't make a big deal out of it," she said.

So far, she has been able to save £1,700, and she said talking openly about her money has been "really helpful".

"There's no way I could have got this far if I wasn't baring my soul to the internet about the money I have spent. It has been a really motivating factor."

Financial expert John Webb said loud budgeting has the ability to help many "feel empowered" and create a "more realistic" relationship with money.

"This is helping to normalise having open and honest conversations about finances," the consumer affair manager at Experien said.

"It can also reduce the anxiety some might have by keeping their financial worries to themselves."

However, he warned it's important to be cautious and to take the reality of life into consideration.

"It could cause troubles within friendship groups if they're not on the same page as you or have different financial goals," he said.

"This challenge isn't meant to stop you from having fun, but it is designed to help people become more conscious and intentional when it comes to money, and reduce the stigma around talking about it."

Rightmove's keyword tool shows Victorian-era houses are the most commonly searched period properties, with people drawn to their ornate designs and features.

Georgian and Edwardian-style are second and third respectively, followed by Tudor properties. Regency ranked in fifth place.

Rightmove property expert Tim Bannister said: "Home hunters continue to be captivated by the character and charm of properties that we see in period dramas.

"Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterised by their historic charm, solid construction, and spacious interiors. You'll often find Victorian houses in some of the most desirable locations which include convenient access to schools and transport links."

Job interview mistakes

On Wednesday we reported on a new £12m ad from PG Tips in response to it falling behind rivals such as Twinings, Yorkshire Tea and Tetley....

We had lots of comments like this...

How on earth was the PG Tips advert so expensive? I prefer Tetley tea, PG Tips is never strong enough flavour for me. Shellyleppard
The reason for the sales drop with PG Tips could be because they increased the price and reduced the quantity of bags from 240 to 180 - it's obvious. Royston

And then this question which we've tried to answer below...

Why have PG Tips changed from Pyramid shape tea bags, to a square? Sam

Last year PG Tips said it was changing to a square bag that left more room for leaves to infuse, as the bags wouldn't fold over themselves.

We reported on data showing how downsizing could save you money for retirement - more than £400,000, in some regions, by swapping four beds for two.

Some of our readers shared their experiences...

We are downsizing and moving South so it's costing us £100k extra for a smaller place, all money from retirement fund. AlanNorth
Interesting read about downsizing for retirement. We recently did this to have the means to retire early at 52. However, we bought a house in the south of France for the price of a flat in our town in West Sussex. Now living the dream! OliSarah

How much should we pay for food?

Executive chef at London's two-Michelin-starred Ikoyi, Jeremy Chan, raised eyebrows when he suggested to the Money blog that Britons don't pay enough for restaurant food.

Ikoyi, the 35th best restaurant in the world, charges £320 for its tasting menu.

"I don't think people pay enough money for food, I think we charge too little, [but] we want to always be accessible to as many people as possible, we're always trying our best to do that," he said, in a piece about his restaurant's tie up with Uber Eats...

We had this in...

Are they serious? That is two weeks' worth of food shopping for me, if the rich can afford this "tasting menu" then they need to be taxed even more by the government, it's just crazy! Steve T
If the rate of pay is proportionate to the vastly overpriced costs of the double Michelin star menu, I would gladly peel quail eggs for four-hour stints over continuing to be abused as a UK supply teacher. AndrewWard
Does this two-star Michelin star chef live in the real world? Who gives a toss if he stands and peels his quails eggs for four hours, and he can get the best turbot from the fishmonger fresh on a daily basis? It doesn't justify the outrageous price he is charging for his tasting menu. Topaztraveller
Chefs do make me laugh, a steak is just a steak, they don't make the meat! They just cook it like the rest of us, but we eat out because we can't be bothered cooking! StevieGrah

Finally, many of you reacted to this feature on common mistakes in job interviews...

Those 10 biggest mistakes people make in interviews is the dumbest thing I've ever read. They expect all that and they'll be offering a £25k a year job. Why wouldn't I want to know about benefits and basic sick pay? And also a limp handshake? How's that relevant to how you work? Jre90

Others brought their own tips...

Whenever I go for an interview I stick to three points: 1. Be yourself 2. Own the interview 3. Wear the clothes that match the job you are applying Kevin James Blakey

From Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England will be able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

This will then be granted from September.

Check if you're eligible  here  - or read on for our explainer on free childcare across the UK.

Three and four year olds

In England, all parents of children aged three and four in England can claim 15 hours of free childcare per week, for 1,140 hours (38 weeks) a year, at an approved provider.

This is a universal offer open to all.

It can be extended to 30 hours where both parents (or the sole parent) are in work, earn the weekly minimum equivalent of 16 hours at the national minimum or living wage, and have an income of less than £100,000 per year.

Two year olds

Previously, only parents in receipt of certain benefits were eligible for 15 hours of free childcare.

But, as of last month, this was extended to working parents.

This is not a universal offer, however.

A working parent must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year. For couples, the rule applies to both parents.

Nine months old

In September, this same 15-hour offer will be extended to working parents of children aged from nine months. From 12 May, those whose children will be at least nine months old on 31 August can apply to received the 15 hours of care from September.

From September 2025

The final change to the childcare offer in England will be rolled out in September 2025, when eligible working parents of all children under the age of five will be able to claim 30 hours of free childcare a week.

In some areas of Wales, the Flying Start early years programme offers 12.5 hours of free childcare for 39 weeks, for eligible children aged two to three. The scheme is based on your postcode area, though it is currently being expanded.

All three and four-year-olds are entitled to free early education of 10 hours per week in approved settings during term time under the Welsh government's childcare offer.

Some children of this age are entitled to up to 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare over 48 weeks of the year. The hours can be split - but at least 10 need to be used on early education.

To qualify for this, each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year, be employed and earn at least the equivalent of working 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage, or be enrolled on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length.

All three and four-year-olds living in Scotland are entitled to at least 1,140 hours per year of free childcare, with no work or earnings requirements for parents.

This is usually taken as 30 hours per week over term time (38 weeks), though each provider will have their own approach.

Some households can claim free childcare for two-year-olds. To be eligible you have to be claiming certain benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit, or have a child that is in the care of their local council or living with you under a guardianship order or kinship care order.

Northern Ireland

There is no scheme for free childcare in Northern Ireland. Some other limited support is available.

Working parents can access support from UK-wide schemes such as tax credits, Universal Credit, childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare.

Aside from this, all parents of children aged three or four can apply for at least 12.5 hours a week of funded pre-school education during term time. But over 90% of three-year-olds have a funded pre-school place - and of course this is different to childcare.

What other help could I be eligible for?

Tax-free childcare  - Working parents in the UK can claim up to £500 every three months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of their children to help with childcare costs.

If the child is disabled, the amount goes up to £1,000 every three months (up to £4,000 a year).

To claim the benefit, parents will need to open a tax-free childcare account online. For every 80p paid into the account, the government will top it up by 20p.

The scheme is available until the September after the child turns 11.

Universal credit  - Working families on universal credit can claim back up to 85% of their monthly childcare costs, as long as the care is paid for upfront. The most you can claim per month is £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children.

Tax credits -  People claiming working tax credit can get up to 70% of what they pay for childcare if their costs are no more than £175 per week for one child or £300 per work for multiple children.

Two big economic moments dominated the news agenda in Money this week - interest rates and GDP.

As expected, the Bank of England held the base rate at 5.25% on Wednesday - but a shift in language was instructive about what may happen next.

Bank governor Andrew Bailey opened the door to a summer cut to 5%, telling reporters that an easing of rates at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on 20 June was neither ruled out nor a fait accompli.

More surprisingly, he suggested that rate cuts, when they start, could go deeper "than currently priced into market rates".

He refused to be drawn on what that path might look like - but markets had thought rates could bottom out at 4.5% or 4.75% this year, and potentially 3.5% or 4% next.

"To make sure that inflation stays around the 2% target - that inflation will neither be too high nor too low - it's likely that we will need to cut Bank rate over the coming quarters and make monetary policy somewhat less restrictive over the forecast period," Mr Bailey said.

You can read economics editor Ed Conway's analysis of the Bank's decision here ...

On Friday we discovered the UK is no longer in recession.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics said.

This followed two consecutive quarters of the economy shrinking.

The data was more positive than anticipated.

"Britain is not just out of recession," wrote Conway. "It is out of recession with a bang."

The UK has seen its fastest growth since the tailend of the pandemic - and Conway picked out three other reasons for optimism.

1/ An economic growth rate of 0.6% is near enough to what economists used to call "trend growth". It's the kind of number that signifies the economy growing at more or less "normal" rates.

2/ 0.6% means the UK is, alongside Canada, the fastest-growing economy in the G7 (we've yet to hear from Japan, but economists expect its economy to contract in the first quarter).

3/ Third, it's not just gross domestic product that's up. So too is gross domestic product per head - the number you get when you divide our national income by every person in the country. After seven years without any growth, GDP per head rose by 0.4% in the first quarter.

GDP per head is a more accurate yardstick for the "feelgood factor", said Conway - perhaps meaning people will finally start to feel better off.

Loaves of bread have been recalled from shelves in Japan after they were found to contain the remains of a rat.

Production of the bread in Tokyo has been halted after parts of a "small animal" were found by at least two people.

Pasco Shikishima Corp, which produces the bread, said 104,000 packages have been recalled as it apologised and promised compensation.

A company representative told Sky News's US partner network, NBC News, that a "small black rat" was found in the bread. No customers were reported to have fallen ill as a result of ingesting the contaminated bread.

"We deeply apologise for the serious inconvenience and trouble this has caused to our customers, suppliers, and other concerned parties," the spokesman said.

Pasco added in a separate statement that "we will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again. We ask for your understanding and your co-operation."

Japanese media reports said at least two people who bought the bread in the Gunma prefecture, north-west of Tokyo, complained to the company about finding a rodent in the bread.

Record levels of shoplifting appear to be declining as fewer shopkeepers reported thefts last year, new figures show.

A survey by the Office for National Statistics shows 26% of retailers experienced customer theft in 2023, down from a record high of 28% in 2022.

This comes despite a number of reports suggesting shoplifting is becoming more frequent.

A  separate ONS finding , which used police crime data, showed reports of shoplifting were at their highest level in 20 years in 2023, with law enforcements logging 430,000 instances of the crime.

Let's get you up to speed on the biggest business news of the past 24 hours.

A privately owned used-car platform is circling Cazoo Group, its stricken US-listed rival, which is on the brink of administration.

Sky News has learnt that Motors.co.uk is a leading contender to acquire Cazoo's marketplace operation, which would include its brand and intellectual property assets.

The process to auction the used-car platform's constituent parts comes after it spent tens of millions of pounds on sponsorship deals in football, snooker and darts in a rapid attempt to gain market share.

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel.

International Airlines Group said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) - above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays.

The prospect of a strike across Tata Steel's UK operations has gained further traction after a key union secured support for industrial action.

Community, which has more than 3,000 members, said 85% voted in favour of fighting the India-owned company's plans for up to 2,800 job losses, the majority of them at the country's biggest steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales.
