Unwrapping Cape Town with you

There's something exciting going on in Cape Town every week. Be the first to know what's new with our newsletter:

One of the longest aerial cable courses in Africa opens at Constantia Nek

Thanks to the new Cape Town Zipline Tour, adventure enthusiasts can be browsing the boutiques of Kloof Street one minute and whizzing through a canyon at Constantia Nek almost the very next. The exhilarating aerial cable slide, which is located  on the private Silvermist Wine Estate, is the very first of its kind to be opened so conveniently near to the electric hum of the CBD (roughly 20 minutes away), and its launch unveils a whole new world of thrills right at city dwellers feet.

Founding company SA Forest Adventures has already established similar sky-high expeditions in Hermanus, Caledon and Citrusdal, so it was just a matter of time before it set up camp on one of Cape Town’s famed slopes to give locals and tourists access to an exciting activity that’s not only close but also quick (the whole tour takes maximum two hours to complete, so much of the day is left free).

“It’s an awesome experience to tick off your bucket list while in the Mother City,” says Clinton Lerm, the owner of the venture. “And it’s so accessible – it doesn’t take three or four hours to do and the drive from pretty much anywhere in Cape Town isn’t long either.”

Though, don’t be fooled by the swiftness of the adventure: this is no casual, calm foefie slide. The new zipline route is, in fact, one of the longest on the African continent (approximately 2.3km in total), and with single  cables that stretch up to 500m in length and that soar 155m above the ground at their highest point, it’s not for the faint-hearted. The only way to reach the first platform at the top of the Constantia Nek slope is via an off-road drive in a 4x4 vehicle (this trip is part of the fun), and once daredevils have pushed off the starting podium, the drop gets steeper and steeper and the experience more and more hair-raising.

“It will make you gasp for air,” claims Clinton, who insists that the Cape Town zipline is the most thrilling of all the SA Forest Adventures tours. “You feel as tiny as a rice grain way up there.”

But the activity is not only aimed at getting the blood pumping and the vocal cords loose. While whooshing down the stainless steel lines, patrons can take in some spectacular sights too. The course is framed by Table Mountain and looks onto the back of the awe-inspiring Twelve Apostles mountain range and down the Constantia Nek valley. Fynbos and treetops fly by far below, the glittering ocean can be spied from two of the platforms and vineyards are visible from at least one of the seven slides.

The founder has been very careful to preserve the natural environment as much as possible – only wood from alien invasive plants was used to build the stands – and he’s as committed to human safety as he is to that of the ecosystem. As a result, thrill-seekers receive a full briefing and demonstration before being driven up the hill and two well-trained guides accompany every group to watch out for zipliners’ well-being and to offer some educational insight into the surrounding valley.

The excursion is bound to rouse those hunger demons, and while there is no meal included in the tour, there are two restaurants on the Silvermist Wine Estate (one being the recently relocated La Colombe). So, you can choose to stay on afterwards for a well-deserved lunch or dinner, or if you so wish, you can hop on the road and be back browsing those Kloof Street boutiques in nothing more than a matter of minutes.

Note: The minimum age requirement for the Cape Town Zipline Tour is eight years old, so kiddies younger than this will unfortunately have to sit the experience out. There is also a maximum weight limit of 120kg.

Tip: The zipline tour is a great idea for a year-end function, a bachelor party or any of several other celebrations. Groups of up to 60 people can be accommodated, and aside from the course, patrons can make use of the on-site restaurant.

The Bill: The two-hour tour costs R600p/p and bookings for groups of six people or less can be done electronically via the company’s website (Saforestadventures.co.za). If you’re a clan of more than seven, email [email protected] to make a reservation. [Please note: between 20th December 2021 & 2 January 2022, the rates will increase to R650 per person.]

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 9am (first tour departs) – 4pm (last tour departs)

  • Once you have all your gear, hop onto the safari-style open-top vehicle to enjoy a 30 min 4x4 trip to the top of the mountain
  • The slides start high in the mountain, over 1,000m above sea level.
  • After a short walk in, and another safety briefing on the first platform, get ready to earn your wings and fly platform to platform
  • Once you have completed the 11 slides, 13 platforms, and a suspension bridge you will start the 1km walk out of the gorge, where the vehicle will be waiting to take you back down to base camp
  • Please  be sure to arrive at least  10-15min BEFORE your tour time .
  • Please allow for sufficient travel time, as your tour will start promptly and we are unable to accommodate guests that arrive after their tour time.
  • Once the safety briefing has begun, you will not be allowed to join the group and you will have  MISSED  your tour.   (it is not possible to accommodate refunds or re-schedules for missed tours, please refer to our cancellation policy for more details)
  • Our vehicles run on rotation, it is logistically impossible for us to hold vehicles for late arrivals as it has a huge knock-on effect on guests waiting to be picked up in the mountain again.
  • If you are coming from Cape Town, please factor in an extra 30-45min on the time indicated by google maps, as the power outages can create a traffic backlog which could impact your travel time. (we do not want you to miss your tour)

CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY :

  • For direct bookings - we offer booking amendments or a full refund up to 24 hours prior to your tour time
  • No refunds (or rescheduled tours) within 24 hours of your tour time.
  • No refunds for late arrivals / missed tours / reduced tour numbers
  • If you have booked through a third party, please arrange any changes/cancellations/refunds through that third party.
  • Tours are mildly weather-dependent, we reserve the right to cancel / refund / reschedule tours in the interest of client safety.
  • Be sure to cancel or reschedule your tour 24 hours before your tour time if you do not want to do the tour in less-than-perfect weather.

.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :

  • SNACK SHOP - There is a small snack shop at our reception area where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, join the free wifi or purchase additional drinks and snacks for your tour.  Please note that there is no restaurant on site. (Please also be aware that we are a cashless environment but we welcome all major debit and credit card payments)
  • FITNESS - This is an adventure activity, and we recommend a reasonable level of fitness: you will need to hike for 1km up and out of the mountain after the tour.   A moderate level of fitness, as well as upper body and core strength, is required to safely participate in this activity.
  • OPTIONAL VIDEO - If and when possible, we will do our best to take a video of you, but please don't rely on this as your only memory.  If all goes well, we will email you the video after the tour.  This is not included in the tour price
  • WEATHER - Our zipline tours are mildly weathered dependent, but we will operate in most weather conditions, so be ready to gear up and let's have some fun.  We keep a close eye on the forecasts and when necessary will make a decision to cancel/refund/reschedule your tour due to the weather.  We do our best to make these decisions as far in advance as possible, but sometimes this is not possible as our zipline slides are based high in the mountains and the weather up high is ever-changing.    Please be sure to keep an eye on the weather and advise our team at least 24hours prior to your tour time if you would prefer to cancel/refund or reschedule your tour due to potential weather.  (Any changes made with less than 24hours notice will be subject to our cancellation policy, UNLESS, we make a decision to cancel the tour)
  • TANDEMS -  We are able to offer 2 tandems per tour time, to ensure guide and client safety we can only offer tandems to guests who weigh less than 50kg.  Please be sure to advise us via email at [email protected], if there will be any children under the age of 9 years on your tour so that we are able to make arrangements.  (Note:  Our minimum age is 5 years old, and children aged 5-9years will most likely need to do the tour in tandem with the guide).
  • WEIGHT RESTRICTION - We suggest a weight restriction per person of approximately 100kg to 110kg – this restriction is not weight-related but rather imposed by the size of the harnesses we use and is based on the circumference of the straps around the body.    A reminder that this is an adventure activity so a moderate level of fitness, as well as upper body and core strength, is required to safely participate in this activity.
  • PREGNANT - unfortunately moms to be this tour is not for you

Our ziplines are designed for guests to fly at a gentle and relaxing pace to enjoy the serenity of the rainforest!

Can I bring infants or toddlers under 3 years old?

We do not recommend bringing your little one on a tour unless you arrange a  Private Charter Tour  to tailor make the day. It is a big day in a vehicle and in the rainforest so they may get restless nor will understand the in depth commentary from the guide.

What time will I return?

Do you do free return transfers.

“ Sandra Mclaren “ We had an amazing day, our guide Ben is fantastic, so knowledgeable, lots of talking and laughing. Food was great, very comfortable tour bus couldn’t ask for any better. Highly recommend this service if you want to know about this beautiful part of our country. ”
“ Lisa Bakker “ We just had a fantastic time yesterday with Ben, our tour guide. We learnt so much, laughed a lot, soaked up the beauty of the Daintree, met local characters, one who showed us crocs from his boat. It was like visiting an old friend who’s showing you around the local area. The best tourism is when you feel like you’re an interim part of the community and Ben did just that!
