Troye Sivan’s New Gap Campaign Is a Union of All His Passions
The pop singer models the brand’s Fall ’24 denim collection in a shoot that fuses music, dance, and fashion

Troye Sivan has never made it a secret that he’s obsessed with denim. In fact, five years ago, the Australian pop star said in an interview that his go-to uniform was “a really good white tee and really good jeans.” Then, he doubled down this past April , when asked what he would pick if he could save one piece of clothing from his entire wardrobe, and he answered: “The pair of vintage Quiksilver jeans I have worn almost every day for years, to the point of it being kind of gross.” The message is clear, but in case Sivan’s love affair with denim wasn’t obvious, he just took things a step further thanks to his new collaboration with Gap, titled “Get Loose” —a campaign which celebrates the brand’s 55-year heritage in denim and highlights a collection of new, free-flowing styles.
“When I think about effortless cool, timeless cool, I think about denim,” Sivan said when we chatted on the phone ahead of the campaign release, a statement that proved to me his obsession with the fabric hadn’t waned. “I just think that you can say so much with the perfect cut of jean in the perfect wash... and I think that to [find] that, you need to have like a keen eye and good style.”
In the campaign video, shot by Dan Martensen, Sivan sports Gap’s baggy jean in a rigid dark wash , which is paired with their Supima relaxed tee in a crisp white. It’s a clip that feels particularly honest to the star at its center, not only because he’s previously described this exact outfit as his go-to, but also because it feels like a continuation of his latest artistic era.
What to Shop This Week
Last year, Sivan dropped his third studio album, Something to Give Each Other , and it was met with critical acclaim, thanks to the singer honing in on his artistic vision like never before, particularly with the visuals. Two of the album’s music videos—“ Rush ” and “ Got Me Started ”—saw Sivan teaming up with choreographers Sergio Reis and Mauro van de Kerkhof to craft a physical language that communicated the themes of the album. And the result was not only impressive to watch, but it gave Sivan a whole new love affair with dance.
“I was really terrified of [dance] for a long time,” Sivan confessed to me. “And then I meet Sergio and Mauro. They kind of gave me my first dance lesson...I realized that it was fun and that I loved it and that I, you know, could improve.” The rest was history. “I remember saying to my parents, I was like, ‘I feel so lucky that I’ve found something new that I love so much as like a 28-year-old.’”
Now, for the “Get Loose” campaign, Sivan has married his passions, and he’s teamed up with Reis yet again, who choreographed the moves executed by Sivan and backup dancers from the CDK Company, who are all dressed in Gap as they dance to “Funny Thing” by Thundercat. Reflecting on the shoot, Sivan says the union was right because “music and dance have always been such a big part of the brand’s history.”
Of course, denim might not be the first fabric that comes to mind when you think of flexible movement, but Sivan notes this only further emphasizes the meaning behind the campaign. “[The dancing] was actually a breeze because the whole campaign is based around ‘get loose,’ so it was like these really wide fits which made it super, super danceable.”
The Grammy nominee likely wasn’t too out of practice either, given that he’d just wrapped up the European leg of his Something to Give Each Other tour, and is gearing up to go on the road in the U.S. with Charli XCX this fall. “I think compared to some of the outfits that I wore on tour that were really, really difficult, you know, like dancing in leather is like—that’s tough,” he joked. “So, this felt like an absolute breeze compared.”

Exclusive: Troye Sivan Talks Becoming the Face of Gap and His Blockbuster Tour with Charli XCX
Given the way Troye Sivan dressed onstage all summer during his swelteringly sexy, joyfully queer Something to Give Each Other Tour—in a slew of racy-yet-elegant grails from emerging designers and luxury houses alike—you might be surprised to hear his latest gig is fronting a campaign for the Gap. Turns out, though, that the Australian pop star’s off-duty style has more in common with the stalwart mall brand’s comfy staples than you’d think.
“It's weird maybe because of my job, but I actually don't really like being the center of attention outside of my work,” Sivan tells me. “I’m okay to just be in my favorite pair of jeans and a T-shirt—that's my every day…. I think it might be an Australian thing, but it's like, you just want to blend in. When I'm onstage, it's the complete opposite—and I feel totally comfortable because it feels warranted in that moment. But in my everyday life, I would much, much, much rather [not be]. There's no fuss ever.”
It’s fitting, then, that as Sivan’s hot and horny alter ego takes a break from touring—before revving up again for the feverishly anticipated Sweat Tour, his co-headlining jaunt with Charli XCX—his more introverted, laid-back self takes center stage in the new Gap spot. Entitled “Get Loose,” the clip is set in an industrial space straight out of Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” video. Sivan, dressed in a relaxed white tee and baggy jeans, gets down to Thundercat’s “Funny Thing” as the dance troupe CDK Company envelops him in their groove.
Collaborating with one of pop’s most compelling contemporary figures feels like a coup for Gap, a storied American label in the midst of a major transition with a new creative director at the helm of its parent company. And there’s plenty of Sivan’s vibey, sensual appeal in “Get Loose”: The campaign was choreographed by Sergio Reis, the mastermind behind the instantly viral moves from Sivan’s “Rush” and “Got Me Started” music videos.
Sivan says he was 14 when he first fell in love with the Gap. “I had this Gap hoodie that I wore for a really, really, really long time. There’s something about just having a very special hoodie,” he says. “Gap definitely holds, I think, a special place in everyone's psyche and heart, and I feel like everyone has, at some point, had some relationship with the brand.”
Beyond well-made, reliable basics, of course, Gap is also known for its iconic imagery—an aspect of the brand that has recently enjoyed a renaissance on social media, through accounts like Gap Playlists . And decades before most fashion companies were routinely platforming the queer community in their advertisements, Gap was already spotlighting queer trailblazers like BD Wong and k.d. lang in the ’80s and ’90s. It’s a lineage Sivan is thrilled to be a part of.
“I think it's just a very cool choice for a big brand like that to have these honestly, really timeless images that still look absolutely gorgeous today,” he says. “I'm just very proud to be a part of canon.”
Next month, Sivan and Charli xcx hit the road for what promises to be the pop event of the year. And if their recent surprise duet at Sivan’s London concert is anything to go by, Sweat Tour attendees should prepare for the “Rush”-iest, brat -iest, most energetic crowd of their concert-going lives.
“I have never heard a crowd go as insane as that crowd did in that moment,” he says about the London show. “I can't wait to have moments like that [on our tour] and get to celebrate one of my favorite artists, really, and one of my favorite people.
“I'm just going to try and be present and take it all in because I think it's going to be a really special tour.”

Troye Sivan Gave Himself Permission to Dance and ‘Get Loose’ in New Gap Campaign
By Tim Chan

Troye Sivan didn’t always want to dance.
While the singer showed off some now-viral moves in the music videos for his singles “Rush” and “Got Me Started,” Sivan says he was always “absolutely petrified” of dancing on stage. But the pulsating tracks on his latest album and a “personal ambition” to emulate “Britney, Janet” and the tightly choreographed popstars he grew up listening to, convinced the singer to finally let loose. “I think it’s one of those things where you just have to go for it, and be okay with not being good,” he muses to Rolling Stone . “Dance is about freedom and releasing yourself,” he says, “and I have fallen really deeply in love with it.”
Sivan’s newfound love of dance reveals itself in a new campaign with Gap , which drops today. Titled “Get Loose,” the campaign harks back to the iconic choreographed Gap commercials of the past, with Sivan and Dutch troupe, CDK Company, performing to Thundercat’s “Funny Thing,” while modeling Gap’s baggy fall denim collection .
Sivan, who recalls owning a Gap hoodie in his teens and “wearing it to death,” says he jumped at the opportunity to work with the clothing brand and reunite with choreographer Sergio Reis, who helped to create the memorable moves from the “Rush” music video.
“Gap is such an iconic part of pop culture, and they have always had really cool taste,” Sivan says. “I’m a really big fan of the branding and the clothing and everything about this [campaign] felt really right to me. And then the fact that it was Sergio who was directing this campaign — it just felt like a natural extension and made perfect sense.”
Sivan admits he had never been much of a dancer until he met Reis, who also choreographed the music videos for “Got Me Started” and “ One of Your Girls .” The singer credits Reis with helping him overcome his apprehension of dancing, by offering a new perspective on how to move.
“I had never learned choreo or danced before I met him, and I’ve kind of learned how he sees movement, and how he uses movement to create shapes,” Sivan says, of his working relationship with Reis. “There are some core practices that he maintains, and once you start to understand those in your body, it becomes easier to learn and apply.”
And now: “I kind of crave [dancing],” Sivan says. “I miss feeling that kind of connection with my body and with other people. And it’s a new thing in my life that I really, really deeply love.”
Sivan filmed the new Gap commercial after returning from his recent European tour , and admits he “felt like I had been hit by a train” after learning the entire choreography in a day. Still, he says it was a thrill to front the fall campaign, which features the dancers in baggy and loose fit denim, inspired by the ideas of “free movement and personal style.”
Sivan’s looks feature Gap’s Baggy Jean in rigid dark wash denim, paired with a classic white T-shirt . A second look finds the singer wearing the ‘90s Loose Cargo Jean styled with a heavyweight hoodie and corduroy jacket . The singer says the looks are fitting with his personal style choices, which always revolve around “a good set of basics.”
“It’s the most important thing when it comes to a personal wardrobe,” he explains, “because upon that you can build and grow and add and layer.”
The new Gap campaign comes ahead of this fall’s “ Sweat Tour, ” which sees Sivan teaming up with good friend Charli XCX for a string of dates across North America . While Sivan has played solo shows this year, he says fans can expect a much larger production for the upcoming tour.
“I think it’s just going to be dialed up like 10 notches,” he teases. The singer is mum on the setlist and structure of the concert, only saying that “It’s going to be a really, really, really special night every show.”
While Sivan has known Charli for years, he says it’s been emotional to see her music — and Brat summer — take off. “My God, it’s been so nice to watch,” he tells Rolling Stone . “I think the thing that’s so exciting to see, is the Charli that the world has all of a sudden woken up to, is like the Charli that we’ve all known and championed and been obsessed with for years. And it’s not because of any kind of change or sacrifice that she made or anything. I think the culture just kind of caught up and was like, “Oh wait, okay, holy shit.”

See “brat” live when Charli XCX and Troye Sivan bring their “Sweat” tour to Detroit, Michigan in only two weeks. And, following the meteoric album release, Charli XCX came out with collaborations featuring fellow alternative pop stars Lorde and Billie Eilish.
Charli XCX and Troye Sivan are also no strangers to collaboration, working together in 2018 to release their track, “1999.” With more of an indie/synth sound, Troye Sivan has released alt-pop songs like “YOUTH” and “Strawberries & Cigarettes.”

Gap has recruited Troye Sivan for its Fall 2024 campaign “Get Loose.” The singer is styled in classic Gap fashion, wearing simple denim and cotton pieces against a minimal backdrop. His first all-brown look features the 90’s Loose Cargo Jean paired with the Heavyweight Zip Hoodie and Corduroy Jacket. For his second look, also worn in an accompanying dance video, Sivan goes extremely classic with the white Gap Relaxed Tee and dark wash Baggy Jean.
The campaign video features Sivan and the CDK Company dancing in Gap clothes to Thundercat’s “Funny Thing.” The film, shot by Dan Martensen, shows Sivan’s signature dance style with similar moves seen in his “Rush” and “Got Me Started” music videos where he also worked with the dance company. This Gap dance video is a follow-up to Tyla’s viral campaign video for the brand where she danced to Jungle’s viral hit “Back On 74.”
