Cruise Lines with Family-Friendly Halloween Sailings

Disney Cruise Line Halloween on the High Seas

Disney Cruise Line Halloween on the High Seas

October is a beautiful time of year to travel: the weather tends to be cooler without being uncomfortably cold, airfare is lower, and crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months. This shoulder season is also a great time to take advantage of regional celebrations, such as wine harvest festivals in Europe, not to mention the natural splendor of fall foliage in regions like New England, the Canadian Maritimes, and even Japan.

Families traveling in late October have an additional factor to consider: Halloween. This spooktacular celebration is a favorite among kids, who look forward to carving pumpkins, donning costumes, and trick-or-treating. While some adults may be indifferent, most children don’t want to miss Halloween.

Luckily, many cruise lines cater to families during autumn months with Halloween programming. In some cases, cruise lines offer a special one-time itinerary that includes Oct. 31, while others have multiple sailings throughout the season with themed decor, drinks, and activities.

We’ve rounded up all the cruise lines that offer confirmed Halloween sailings with themed itineraries in 2024 and beyond. We focused on family-friendly cruises with activities for children and unique programming to celebrate the holiday.

Carnival Cruise Line

princess cruises karaoke

Carnival Cruise Line celebrates Halloween throughout the month of October across its entire fleet. All ships feature decorations – including Patch the Pumpkin Pirate in the atrium, and special Halloween backdrops for photos. Carnival also offers themed drink specials, and on Oct. 31, Halloween desserts.

Guests can enjoy activities ranging from “frightfully fun” trivia, dance classes, and karaoke, to trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving contests, and even Halloween-themed casino programming (North American only).

Not all of Carnival’s programming is the same across its fleet. Guests who travel on Excel ships (Carnival Celebration, Mardis Gras, and Carnival Jubilee) can enjoy a Halloween costume contest and “Monster Ball,” while the other ships feature “Patch’s Halloween Deck Party and Costume Contest” instead.

Costa Cruise Line

Kids sailing on Costa Cruise Line over Halloween will enjoy a decorated Squok Club, complete with creepy crawlies and pumpkins. The lounges, restaurants, and atrium will also be decorated with carved pumpkins, and on Oct. 31, Halloween-themed desserts are on the menu – including a specialty ice cream at the Gelataria.

Cunard, known for its iconic transatlantic cruises and rich history, goes all in on classy celebrations – Halloween included. Guests can look forward to a Halloween-themed gala ball or a party in the Queens Room, as well as festive decorations, a pumpkin carving contest, specialty cocktails and desserts, themed quizzes, scary movies, and “kreepy karaoke.”

Cunard does have children’s activities onboard as well. Young passengers will enjoy Halloween crafts and activities in The Kids’ Zone, as well as trick-or-treating.

Disney Cruise Line: Halloween on the High Seas

princess cruises karaoke

Disney loves Halloween. This is true both on land and on the sea. While the theme parks are known for going all out with festive decor, specialty food and drinks, and even re-themed attractions, Disney Cruise Line offers its own spin on the holiday: Halloween on the High Seas . Available on Magic, Dream, Fantasy, and Wish, the special itinerary includes the dance party event Mickey’s Mouse-querade, themed crafts, trick-or-treating, spine-tingling treats, and character meet-and-greets.

One fan-favorite highlight of Halloween on the High Seas sailings is that the walkaround characters don special costumes. It’s a chance for guests to get their picture with Mickey, Minnie, and Donald and others in unique dress. Recently, Disney added Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow dressed as the Sanderson sisters from the hit movie “Hocus Pocus.”

Similar to the parks, Disney’s Halloween festivities are not limited to October. Sailings begin in September, and 2025’s dates are already available to book with guaranteed activities.

Holland America Line

Halloween decorations

While Holland America Line is not a family cruise line in the same way most other cruise lines on this list are, it does offer a kids club. It’s overall laid-back vibe is good for multi-gen groups, but it might not be a great fit for a family with young kids looking for excitement.

Having said that, HAL does offer Halloween-themed activities that the entire family can enjoy (including Great-Grandma), such as crafts, a costume party, a themed tea, special desserts in Lido Market, and even a carved pumpkin contest guests can vote on.

MSC Cruises

Guests onboard MSC Cruises over Halloween will enjoy frightfully fun festivities for all ages. This includes themed menus, parades and parties, costume contests, arts and crafts, quizzes, and other themed games.

Kids onboard will also enjoy a Halloween-inspired itinerary designed just for them. Highlights include an MSC Scary House, trick-or-treating, workshops, challenges, gameshows, and even a writing contest. Teens can celebrate the season with a Halloween night party and costume and makeup competition.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line throws a Halloween party for passengers, complete with festive decorations, goodies, and specialty cocktails. Guests can enjoy themed activities like trivia, as well as trick-or-treating and a costume contest.

Be warned: Because youth programming differs ship-to-ship, NCL cannot confirm the specific activities onboard.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises stands out as having some of the most creative and unique family-friendly activities on its Halloween sailings. In addition to the more common offerings, like pumpkin carving contest, themed trivia, and spooky décor, the cruise also runs a ghost ship tour, a pumpkin pie eating contest, a “guess the weight of the pumpkin” contest, and Halloween gameshows.

Cinephiles and horror-lovers alike can enjoy a scary movie marathon, while the kids can choose from Halloween pool games, themed arts and crafts, and even a ship-wide trick-or-treating with the whole family.

Royal Caribbean

Guests on sailings over Oct. 31 are encouraged to don costumes and celebrate Halloween with Royal Caribbean. The ships feature holiday decorations, as well as themed daily activities like costume contests and scavenger hunts.

Adventure Ocean, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning childcare facilities, also offers kid-friendly Halloween decorations and activities.

First look: Sun Princess, the giant new ship from Princess Cruises

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Call it a new era for Princess Cruises .

The California-based line's new ship, Sun Princess, is its biggest ever by far . But it's not just size that sets it apart.

As I am seeing this week during one of the first sailings of the still-not-quite-finished, 4,300-passenger vessel, its design marks a turn for the line as it tries to appeal to a younger audience and more "new to cruise" customers who might not have considered the brand before.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Sun Princess is more lively, more kid-friendly and more chock-full of dining, drinking and entertainment options than any other Princess ship that has come before.

It's also the first Princess ship with a separate suite complex aimed at the growing number of big-ship-loving vacationers willing to pay big bucks to be extra pampered while at sea.

Will it be a hit? Only time will tell. Princess regulars know what they like, and what they like isn't necessarily giant, activity-packed vessels. But that might not matter if Sun Princess succeeds in drawing in a new wave of Princess fans.

Here are my first impressions of the ship after three days on board.

It's more kid-friendly

Princess has never been known as a family brand. Until recently, the average age of a Princess cruiser was nearly 60, and its ships catered heavily to older couples and retirees. But with Sun Princess, the line is making a big move to make families with younger kids feel more welcome, even if they're still not the target market.

Notably, a large chunk of the top deck of Sun Princess is covered with a family-friendly play zone called Park19 — the sort of thing that, until now, Princess just hasn't done. Park19's marquee attraction is Sea Breeze, a hang-gliding-like ride experience that is billed as a first on a cruise ship.

princess cruises karaoke

The area also has a ropes course with swinging bridges and balance beams and a climbing wall-like experience that will take visitors to a lookout at the very top of the ship, with slides that will take them back down. There's a splash zone with water jets, too.

Alas, none of these attractions were open this week, as they weren't quite ready — despite the ship being on its second sailing with paying passengers. I thus didn't have a chance to try them. But from what I saw, it will be a major upgrade to the family-fun experience on a Princess ship.

In addition, younger travelers will find major new tween and teen hangout zones (called Neon Grove and The Underground, respectively) within the ship, plus a large playroom for the littlest Princess cruisers called Firefly Park.

princess cruises karaoke

Neon Grove and The Underground have all the sorts of games your tweens and teens will love, from PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch consoles to foosball and air hockey tables, and they're home to movie and disco nights, scavenger hunts and the like. Firefly Park is set up for arts and crafts, themed parties and group games aimed at the little ones.

Another major family-friendly upgrade for Sun Princess is the addition of far more connecting cabins (100) than is typical for a Princess ship, as well as a new category of larger Cabana Mini-Suite cabins that will appeal to families looking for more space.

princess cruises karaoke

In adding all the above, Princess is doubling down on a market that is already in its wheelhouse: multigenerational groups that often include the grandparents, their middle-aged children and their younger grandchildren. It's giving that demographic just enough family fun to make sure the younger set in those groups feels at home.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises

That said, Princess isn't trying to be a family line like Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line . You won't find the truly over-the-top family attractions such as giant water parks, go-kart tracks and water coasters that those lines offer sprawled across Sun Princess' top decks. And for the typical Princess cruisers, that's probably just fine.

It's got a lot more options for foodies

Are you the sort of cruiser who never likes to eat in the same place twice? Sun Princess is the Princess ship for you. The vessel has a far more diverse array of eateries than any Princess ship to date — a conscious effort by the line to offer its customers more options.

In addition to the two specialty restaurants found on almost every Princess ship (the Crown Grill steakhouse and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria), Sun Princess is home to the Butcher's Block by Dario, a new meat-focused grill designed in partnership with celebrity Italian butcher Dario Cecchini (if you've seen Netflix's "Chef's Table," you know who he is).

princess cruises karaoke

It also has three new Asian dining options: Makoto Ocean, a sushi eatery designed by James Beard Foundation honoree Makoto Okuwa; teppanyaki-serving Umai Teppanyaki; and hot pot venue Umai Hot Pot (the latter two outlets share the same space).

In addition, Sun Princess is just the fifth Princess ship to get a version of the new Princess seafood eatery, The Catch by Rudi, designed by Princess head of culinary arts Rudi Sodamin. (Holland America fans know Sodamin as that line's longtime master chef.)

Yet another new venue, Love by Britto, is coming to the ship soon. Billed as an "artistic-inspired dining experience" designed in partnership with the artist Romero Britto, it'll overlook the wake of the ship in a space that isn't quite ready.

princess cruises karaoke

During my sailing, I've only had a chance to try Makoto Ocean and Umai Teppanaki. Makoto Ocean serves up the Edomae-style sushi that Okuwa showcases in his restaurants in Miami, Brazil, Mexico City and Panama. (You might also know Okuwa from his stint on The Food Network's "Iron Chef.")

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess cruise

Overlooking the ship's central Piazza, Makoto Ocean wows with a tasting menu of well-presented and quality sushi and handrolls (at a fixed price of $45 per person).

Alas, it's a venue marred by its location, as the noise from entertainment in the Piazza is overwhelming. While I dined, there was the cacophony of a live game show with cheering crowds taking place just steps away, followed soon after by a high-volume tribute to Motown. If you're sensitive to sound, bring your noise-canceling headphones.

Umai Teppanyaki (also $45 per person, fixed price) is a classic Teppanyaki eatery, complete with chefs yukking it up while they cook in front of you in a way your kids will love.

Among other dining changes, Princess has shaken up its no-extra-charge main dining room format with the debut of Sun Princess to offer more diversity. The top level of the three-level venue is now known as Americana and offers a speedier meal service with an all-day menu of comfort food items such as fish and chips, chicken wings, fried chicken and breakfast burritos. (Yes, you can order the breakfast burrito and other breakfast items for dinner.)

Related: This major cruise line is now serving breakfast for dinner

It's a great option if you want a quick bite without braving the madness that is The Eatery, the ship's too small and crowd-packed buffet.

princess cruises karaoke

The middle level of the main dining room (called Horizons) offers come-when-you-want anytime dining with the normal drawn-out service. The lower level (also called Horizons) offers the more traditional fixed-seating dinner format that once was de rigeur at Princess.

I was impressed with the presentation and quality of the Horizon menu items. It was a step up from what you'll find in the included restaurants on some other big, mass-market ships.

Taken together, the additions and changes to dining on Sun Princess as compared to earlier Princess ships amount to a major new direction in dining for the line. Unlike such rival big-ship lines as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, Princess has never been known for offering a lot of dining choices on its ships.

It's bustling at night

Sun Princess has the liveliest night scene of any Princess ship in the fleet. And that's a saying a lot, as Princess ships are traditionally lively at night. Princess has long been known for having lots of entertainment running at once in multiple venues.

On Sun Princess, a trip down the vessel's main entertainment drag on Deck 7 in the evening takes you past one bustling nightspot after another, from an Irish pub with live music to a comedy club that doubles as a karaoke lounge.

Among the biggest changes as compared to earlier Princess ships is that the main theater (at the front end of Deck 7) has gotten a major upgrade to allow for more high-tech shows. Dubbed the Princess Arena, it's an innovative, 990-seat space that can be configured three different ways: As an "in-the-round" theater, a 270-degree "keyhole" theater and a traditional proscenium theater.

princess cruises karaoke

Princess is calling the arena the most technologically advanced entertainment venue at sea ever, though we're sure Virgin Voyages and Royal Caribbean (two lines known for some very high-tech shipboard theaters) would quibble with that.

Related: The 3 classes of Princess ships, explained

The Princess Arena will eventually be home to four mostly new production shows, none of which are ready. For now, the line is using the space for performances by feature entertainers such as magicians and vocalists.

Among other big changes, the ship's central hub, The Piazza, has been transformed into much more of a showroom (more on that in a moment), and there's yet another major new entertainment space at the top of the ship in The Dome — an unusual glass-covered venue. Princess is promising aerial shows in The Dome, but those, too, aren't quite ready to go (if you've noticed, this a theme with this ship; lots of its most notable new venues aren't ready).

princess cruises karaoke

The Dome itself felt smaller than it looked in the drawings the line released in advance of the ship's debut. There was also a limited amount of space for seating during nighttime shows or lounging during the day (when it serves as a solarium-like lounge and pool space). For shows, it's billed as having a capacity of just 250, about a fourth the amount of the Princess Arena.

The Dome on Sun Princess isn't anything close in size (or impressiveness) to the massive new glass-covered dome atop Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas — the new world's biggest cruise ship.

One other new entertainment venue, a magic-infused nightspot called Spellbound by Magic Castle , debuts Wednesday. Stay tuned for a full report here at TPG later this week.

Its pepped-up Piazza might turn off regulars

If Princess ships have a signature element, it is The Piazza, a central atrium-like space found on most Princess ships that serves as a sort of town square. You'll typically find an espresso drink-serving, conducive-to-conversation cafe at the base of each of these spaces and other venues for conversation, such as wine and Champagne bars, plus a few shops. Some of the piazzas are surrounded by pizzerias and seafood bars, too.

For many longtime Princess fans, The Piazza has always been a lovely place to relax with a coffee, as you would at a square in Italy, and talk with friends or take in the occasional low-key entertainment that Princess has traditionally put on — violinists, guitarists, jugglers and the like. It is, as Princess says on its website, a "diversified and relaxing experience" — to me, relaxing always being the operative word.

It is relaxing no more. On Sun Princess, The Piazza has been turned into much more of a full-blown entertainment space, one that is home to an almost nonstop rotation of musical performances, game shows and group activities like line dancing, that is broadcast across speakers at sometimes ear-splitting decibels.

Rising three decks, the circular space features stadium-like seating around its second and third levels that gives it the feel of a theater in the round. It has a large LED screen at one end and a stage that can rise from the floor.

princess cruises karaoke

It's also rigged for aerial performances, which were not running when I was on board as they weren't quite ready. But they'll be coming.

There's also a DJ booth, from which a DJ was blasting music at close to dance club levels on the first day of our voyage.

Related: Don't miss these perks when sailing with Princess

As a longtime Princess cruiser, I find it all a bit much. I miss my quieter atrium, and I suspect other Princess regulars will feel the same. That said, The Piazza as a bigger entertainment space might be just what Princess needs to draw in younger, more entertainment-driven customers, particularly the coveted "new to cruise" crowd that hasn't sailed with the line before.

Judging from the fact that The Piazza has often been packed with onlookers this week during the many performances taking place in it, it might be that Princess has played this move to more piazza pizzazz just right.

Its cabins get the basics right ...

The standard rooms on Sun Princess aren't flashy, but they get the basics right — more than right. In many respects, they are superbly designed. And you can't ask for much more on a mid-priced cruise ship.

While the finishings aren't luxurious, Deluxe Balcony Staterooms (the type of cabin that I was in and the most common cabin category on the ship) have an inviting, modern look with the right amount of furnishings and amenities, all in the right places.

princess cruises karaoke

Measuring 200 square feet, not including the balcony space, the Deluxe Balcony Staterooms are just big enough to fit in a queen size bed flanked by two small nightstands and an adjacent sitting area with a sofa and a (very) small coffee table.

There's also a built-in desk area across from the sofa with a chair and a generous amount of built-in closet storage near the entryway. The closet is deep enough to contain my large-size men's shirts and jackets on hangers without crushing them sideways, something that isn't always the case with built-in closets on newer ships.

The desk area is just about as perfectly designed as can be, with a large-for-a-cruise-ship work surface, a large lighted mirror, three useful built-in drawers, and more outlets and USB ports than even the most device-laden traveler could want. (We're talking multiple U.S.-style outlets, a European-style outlet, multiple USB ports and even USB-C ports!)

Related: Everything you need to know about Princess cabins

More power points are above the nightstands next to the bed — a U.S.-style outlet, a USB port and a USB-C port on each side. Plus, the nightstands have little drawers and shelves that augment the room's storage.

princess cruises karaoke

The bed itself is cloud-like comfortable, with high-thread-count cotton sheets that had me drifting into a deep slumber in no time. For those of you who want to watch a show before bedtime, a large and crisp TV is positioned perfectly on the wall just beyond your toes.

Among the room's little touches, I loved the hidden nightlights under the nightstands that snap on as you walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night, illuminating your way just enough so you don't crash into the wall. Another nightlight in the bathroom flips on as you approach. Why don't more cruise lines add these?

The bathroom itself is a lesson in everything-in-its-place efficiency. Sleek and modern, it offers a glass-walled shower just big enough to let you get all soapy in comfort without any wasted space and a just-big-enough sink area topped with a large lighted mirror.

princess cruises karaoke

If there is one flaw to the rooms (and this one is a head-scratcher), it is that their "do not disturb" buttons are on the outside of the cabins. In other words, when you're ready to go to sleep or otherwise be left alone, you have to open your door and reach around to switch on your "do not disturb" light. To me, that's just weird. Why not have the button on the inside?

Nearly 1,000 of the 2,157 cabins on Sun Princess are Deluxe Balcony Staterooms. Several other cabin categories on the ship, including Premium Oceanview and Interior cabins, have a similar look and features but lack a balcony.

... but its new suite zone is a miss

Princess is nearly 20 years behind some of its big-ship competitors in adding suite zones to ships. But the line is finally acknowledging it might have made a mistake in not jumping on the trend.

Sun Princess is the first vessel in the line's 59-year history to have a large grouping of suites — 50 in all, ranging in size from a relatively modest 304 square feet (for what's known as a Signature Penthouse Suite) to a sprawling 1,260 square feet (for a Signature Sky Suite).

Even more notably, all of these suites, dubbed the Signature Collection, come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, a two-deck-high lounge overlooking the ship's wake and an outside sun deck — a first for Princess.

princess cruises karaoke

These exclusive suite-only areas represent Princess' first move toward offering the sort of upscale "ship within a ship" luxury zones that have been a mainstay on many of the big vessels operated by Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises for years and that have more recently been popping up on Royal Caribbean ships and Celebrity Cruises vessels, too.

Unfortunately, Princess didn't cluster all the new suite features in one area, which seems odd given the line's executives said they started from a blank slate when designing this new class of vessels.

The Signature Restaurant, exclusive to suite guests, is in a busy (and noisy) public area off the ship's central Piazza on Deck 7, far from most of the biggest suites. Those accommodations are at the back of the ship on decks 15, 16 and 17.

And while the Signature Lounge is logically nestled among the biggest suites on Deck 16, it's relatively modest in size and not well tied into the suites around it. While you'll need a suite keycard to get into the lounge, the suites themselves are not within a keycard-access-only area and thus can be reached by any passenger on the ship — a turn-off to privacy-seeking suite guests. This is not the way most other cruise lines do these special suite areas.

princess cruises karaoke

The Signature Sun Deck, meanwhile, is just above some of the biggest suites. But it's just a breakout section of The Sanctuary, the extra-charge, adults-only lounge area found atop Princess ships. It also seems small given the number of people staying in Signature suites (100, assuming two people for each of the ship's 50 suites).

The suites themselves, while big in many cases, lack the sort of high-end design that you'll often find in top cruise ship suites. Each of the Signature Sky Suites, for instance, has an enormous master bathroom, but the space is poorly used with a bizarrely small shower in one corner, a narrow bathtub laid out sideways along the wall next to it, an almost amusingly tiny toilet jammed into the far corner and a narrow sink area, all on the edges of what is a huge empty space in the middle of the room.

princess cruises karaoke

It's as if the ship's architects forgot to specify what was going to go into the bathroom until it was too late, and the shipyard just stuck in whatever it had.

My take: Princess still has a ways to go if it wants to offer a truly world-class suite experience.

Bottom line

Sun Princess is the first of an all-new class of ships at Princess Cruises that are far bigger and more venue-packed than any vessel the line has debuted before. For vacationers who like a lot of choice when they travel, whether it be for dining, drinking or entertainment, it'll no doubt be the best Princess ship yet. For those who prefer an older-style, more intimate Princess experience, it might be a ship to skip.

That said, as I am seeing this week, there's still a lot on Sun Princess that Princess regulars will recognize. It's a ship designed to be evolutionary for the brand, not revolutionary.

Karaoke programming

Cool Cruiser

singingthinker

At the end of July I went on an Alaska cruise with Princess and I thought the karaoke programming was very poor. It was only offered three times on the cruise and the first one was specifically for families, kids and parents. As a childfree 60 year old, I boycotted it. Each time the karaoke lasted only an hour to hour and a half. The songlist seemed to be pretty small and limited, too, compared to karaoke at bars back home. The hosts for the karaoke were also crew members who usually had other duties. There was clearly way more demand for karaoke than there were opportunities on this cruise as the two times I attended karaoke there were way more people wanting to sing than there were slots to sing in the brief karaoke shows on the cruise. Also, there were no songbooks, online or printed, for the singers to look up what songs they had available. You had to stand in a line and ask the host what songs they had as the host looked them up and signed you up to sing, both on their I-Pads. Is the the new normal for karaoke on cruises? On the other hand, there were way more opportunities to listen to live bands who played music for ballroom dancing on the cruise, even tho their were only a few couple that ever participated in these events. Seems to me the cruise director is out of touch with what most people want on the cruise for entertainment options and karaoke is treated as an afterthought, even tho 15 years ago when I went on a Carnival cruise, it was very popular and done well, offered almost every night and with karaoke events that lasted at least a few hours and were hosted by a FT karaoke host who had no other duties and was very good at hosting karaoke.

On a short cruise, 7 day Alaska?, there is little time for karaoke. I have been on many Princess Cruises. On some cruises there is just a small group that attend the sessions. Other times lots of passengers want to test out their singing ability, probably what you experienced in Alaska. Your Alaska voyage probably had some later evening sailing times. If this was the case it becomes more difficult to schedule all the different evening activities and keep everyone pleased. On longer cruises there is karaoke almost every evening. I have been on voyages where there were so few singers that people sang two or three songs in a session, or put together groups on the fly to try some of those duet songs.

Princess must pay copyright fees to use karaoke tracks. Four to five years ago they had a much larger selection, but because of copyright issues this has been reduced. Of course Princess can obtain additional songs if they are willing to pay the copyright fees. Years ago passengers even brought their own backing tracks. Copyright enforcement put an end to this.

I agree, even with the reduced number of available songs, books are more passenger friendly then the stand there asking what songs they might have method. Many bars/DJ's really don't pay copyright fees, even though they should. Thus they have very large selections of songs. Over the years I have collected a list of songs I enjoy that Princess has in their collection. Makes it easier. Princess uses its Cruise Director staff to host all on board events, including karaoke. Never had a issue with this.

Suggest you add some comments to the post cruise review regarding increasing the song list, books and what you thought were poorly run sessions. Princess does read these comments.

Just a few weeks ago I was speaking with a friend that sails frequently on another cruise line, maybe 4 to 5 times a year. This friend enjoys karaoke. He commented that since about 4 to 5 years ago the on board karaoke library has been reduced due to copyright issues. Same as Princess.

Also, with it being an Alaskan cruise, usually the demographic is usually a bit older.  I would think Ballroom Dancing would appeal to more passengers.  Maybe that cruise you were on had an unusual passenger mix (more children)

It was a 7 day cruise to Alaska. There were a lot of kids aboard, but the older passengers wanted karaoke way more than ballroom dancing, so it appeared to be a matter of the cruise director making a wrong and poor assumption about ballroom dancing being more popular with the older passengers than karaoke. BTW, I contacted the corporate office of Princess about my complaints and they didn't seem to care at all. They said it was all decided by the cruise director. Well, how am I supposed to contact the cruise director before booking a future cruise to see what the karaoke situation will be on that ship? I highly doubt the cruise line will make the cruise director available for a chat or e-mail chat about my wishes before a cruise. Ballroom dancing appeared to only attract a handful of passengers on my cruise.

As for song selection, it is still possible to have a good song selection if you are willing to pay for them. You have to order the songs from UK companies or a French company called Karaoke Version. I know this because I frequently attend a bar karaoke show where the host has a completely legal collection of over 15 K songs. Not being willing to spend the time and money on getting a decent song library of at least several thousand songs is not an excuse, at least in my mind. Also, I am very aware of the issues regarding copyright and licensing with karaoke in the last 15 years as I followed it with the bar karaoke in my area. Compiling a legal collection of songs is now more expensive and more work than in the old days of illegal tracks run rampant, but it can be done. The question is whether karaoke is enough of a priority or not to the cruise line.

Above I mean a phone chat with the cruise director, or at least an e-mail chat.

Haha

Many years ago someone told me that Karaoke was a Japanese work for "can't sing worth a dam".

franktown

It must be very different from cruise to cruise.  Was on the Regal in February and Karaoke was very poorly attended.  Wasn't more than a handful of Karaoke singers.   I don't sing but enjoy watching.  The cruise staff had to have the same singers sing multiple songs to keep it going.  Must be difficult for the Cruise Director to know his demographics ahead of time.

I do agree that the Princess library is lacking. Many very popular artists and songs are not available. Princess needs to allocate additional $$ to purchase more songs.

Department specific comments in the post cruise survey are forwarded to that department for review. That is how you mention your likes or dislikes to the cruise and entertainment director. I know from speaking with senior officers that the staff does review and pay attention to these comments.

You can not determine a schedule of activities in advance of the cruise. If you book a repeating itinerary, same voyage week after week through the season, you may be able to get an idea of the activity schedule by inquiring on these cruise critic boards. Certain cruise lines may place more attention on karaoke than Princess.

We have been on 42 Princess cruises. Although I enjoy karaoke, my experience is that on most itineraries it isn't that well attended. Ballroom, other dancing and live music is one reason why many repeating passengers keep returning to Princess, thus it is why these sessions are planned.

On our Canada/NE voyage just this past August there were a few evenings when karaoke was scheduled for 1 1/2 hours. Almost no one showed. There were just a few of us singing to and with each other. Compare with an extended Caribbean cruise 2 years ago. Karaoke sessions were full. There were even some unusual extended afternoon sessions.

Princess offers the Voice of the Ocean competition, rotating chairs and all, where you get voted in by performing a karaoke song, and then perform on stage with the live Princess orchestra. Don't know if there are enough sea days on an Alaska cruise for the rehearsals, nor enough evening time to schedule the show. Did you have this?

Cruise lines not only have to pay to purchase songs, but they have to pay for the rights to play songs. If they don't have these rights they are in violation of copyright laws and subject to legal action. Where the song tracks are purchased is not the issue. Just because a DJ purchased songs legally does not provide the rights to play them in public. Bars, and other establishments are supposed to pay fees to publishers to play songs. This is normally done by paying annual fees to the publishers. Playing songs without rights can lead to legal actions and costs. But, since most of these establishments are not monitored they just get away with it. Some smaller establishments are exempt from these laws.

It actually means without or empty orchestra.

Like

I could mention karaoke in Crooners bar when a certain "entertainer" allowed it ... but I won't go there ...

and agreed , we would never go to a planned karaoke session ... but might drop in on "Voice" ...

Yes, the cruise did have a Voice Of The Ocean competition, but I hate karaoke and singing contests, so I didn't get involved in it. I sing for fun, not competition. The Voice competition is obviously meant to be some kind of substitute for regular karaoke with the more serious singers. I heard that most of the competitors on my cruise were not very good. As far as Skynight's comments on legalities and karaoke tracks, yes, I concede that most bars don't have to worry about regulation or lawsuits over piracy that way a cruise line does, but that does still not excuse having a piss poor song collection. It only takes some time, effort, and some money to build a good library. As for Franktown's comment on karaoke attendance, again, the karaoke attendance was overwhelming, while the ballroom attendance was very poor. The cruise director obviously either guessed and chose wrongly, or else just didn't care about karaoke. Either way, it was very disappointing. I can see how it might be difficult to predict in advance which activities will be in demand and which will not, but hopefully with my comments and complaints, Princess and that cruise director will learn from the experience and do better in the future. However, I am not holding my breath and will look into other cruise lines for the future.

Haha, that is funny, I heard it's a Phillippino thing 😄

A lot of people at karaoke can't sing worth a damn, but the majority can and some are very good. So, I don't buy into the common stereotype of all karaoke singers being bad.

It's a joke, a little humor for the day.

I have been to several Karaoke sessions where the singers were young, drunk and out of tune.  They were a blast.  Otherwise, I find them mostly boring even when the singers are good.

Different stroke for different folks. I hate country music and get turned off in general by bad singers. I prefer decent to good singers who sing interesting, non-country songs. But I realize I am a karaoke snob and more serious about karaoke than you and most others are about it. At the same time, I hate contests for karaoke and singing. I don't even watch the TV singing competitions. Boring......

singingthinker. Just for information. Yes, Voice is technically a competition where one person walks away with a trophy. But for the 6 to 8 participants it is really more a show experience singing on stage with an orchestra of very accomplished musicians. Something amateurs don't experience very often. On the negative side you can only choose from approximately 150 songs for which the band has charts and license. Each song is a shortened version around 1 1/2 to 2 minutes long. Also not much of a chance to change keys. I've done it 4 times. Each time was fun.

Laurie S.

I hope it's better on our cruise in May.  Karaoke is the only onboard activity we love to do.  I'm not interested in the shows, trivia, cooking demos, etc.  I'm a singer who loves to sing.  I don't need a book to figure out what to sing, I already have a list of my songs and they range from classic rock to country, with a few exceptions.  My late husband was a professional musician at one time in his life and he was my wonderful mentor.

Personally I never have nor ever will attend a karaoke session.  As has been noted in several previous replies it is generally not well attended on many Princess cruises.  Yours appears to have been one that was.  Most passengers book a cruise for the experience of seeing places that they would not get to otherwise.  Many others cruise just for the shipboard experience nad I think it has been shown that they do not typically attend karaoke sessions.  You might want to consider a different cruise line if karaoke is that important to you.  Not downgrading your desires nor being snide about this but just stating reality.

This pretty much answers all of your questions.  9 posts here on CC and every one pertains to karaoke.  You are definitely up there in the "1%" when it comes to karaoke and it will be impossible for a cruise ship to live up to your lofty standards.  You agree that 15 years ago, things were better for you.  But time marched on and karaoke has been supplanted in popularity by singing competitions that you detest.  And yet American Idol, America's Got Talent, (and their respective European counterparts),  and The Voice are among the highest rated shows on television, (not to mention the Masked Singer, last year's ratings phenomenon.  Go figure.)  So what is a cruise director supposed to do?  Cater to the "been there, done that" karaoke crowd, or create entertainment that riffs off of American Idol (Cruise Ship Idol) and The Voice (The Voice at Sea)?  Can the Masked Crew Member Singer be far behind?  Seems like an easy decision but one that unfortunately left you behind.  Join the crowd who a) used to enjoy hosted Bridge games; b) used to enjoy real wine seminars with actual sommeliers; and c) used to enjoy ballroom dancing on purpose-built dance surfaces instead of polished marble.  Your tastes and the general cruising public's tastes just aren't intersecting the way they used to.  I believe you when you say that there was a lot of interest in karaoke on your specific cruise.  But that would be an outlier if my experiences over the past 10 years are any indication.  The CD staff has no way of knowing if a particular cruise is going to host an unusually high number of fans of any one form of entertainment unless it is a specialty cruise.  On your cruise they planned for a "normal" amount of interest and participants in karaoke and they guessed wrong.  Not much can be done about that.

You are right in that they guessed wrong for my cruise and that the times on cruise lines have left me behind as far as karaoke. I should probably choose a specialty cruise that emphasizes karaoke or just pick my cruises with the assumption that the ship's karaoke will be poor, since I refuse to do contests.

Skynight- I see the Voice competition on the ship, as you describe it, as similar to when I have sung live band karaoke. It is a fun change of pace to do once in a while, but it is not that satisfying for me as a regular thing because I like a large selection of songs to choose from and I almost always need the key lowered for me to do the songs I like. So, the Voice thing would not be for me.

Laurie S.- You seem to be on my level. I hope you have better luck than me when you sail next time.

TM- I agree with you. Princess is probably not the line for me if I care about singing during the cruise. I will look into other lines.

You have all answered my original ?. which was, is this the new normal? At least for Princess, it apparently is......

dickinson

Our Alaska cruise this July on the Royal Princess had the same amount of Karaoke sessions as you.  Didn't go to the family one but the other two were poorly attended.... just like most of our cruises.  Our cruise didn't even have Voice of the Ocean because the first time they had the tryouts only 3 people showed up.  I know you enjoy karaoke, as does my dh, but it seems to me that most people do not.

I guess everybody's different and we are now the minority of cruise passengers. But on my cruise it was clear that the demand for karaoke far exceeded the opportunities provided. I don't know how many people tried out for the Voice Of The Ocean competition on my cruise, but I heard they had enough people to hold the full competition's different stages, tho most of the singers were not very good, based on the gossip passed on to me by passengers who attended the auditions and later stages.

That is most unusual, most Princess ships have karaoke.

I have been on the Crown,Emerald and Grand....they all had Kareoki

What I suspect is that the Alaska crowd may not be as festive, so maybe no karaoke on the Island. But next spring is the Caribbean Princess to Aruba which should be more festive.

Like i said before this isn't my first cruise, just #1 on Princess. On other lines the Caribbean and Mexican cruises were pretty much high energy, while Alaska and Canada/New England were more older people who usually aren't into a party.

I should live and have a great time regardless.

This September will be my first time on Princess, but my 14th cruise over-all. Please tell me that the karaoke scene on Princess is rocking   Princess does have karaoke. Rockin? Depends where you are going and how long the cruise. Passengers determine if any activity is rockin' or not. A Caribbean or Mexican cruise will have more lively party passengers than say Hawaii or Transalantic cruises. The longer the cruise the more karaoke. Depending on the ship it will be in the Explorers Lounge or Club Fusion. The CD may run a "Pop Star" contest which is a karaoke contest with a few sessions to qualify and the final at 10PM on the last night. Even if you don't want to be in the contest you can still sing the karaoke on qualifying nights. They also may run "So You Want to be a Rock Star" where you sing with a live band, look for it in the Princess Patter. The band has about 100 songs. When I did it the musicians were able to change key for me with no problem. Make friends with the CD Staff and you will have fun with karaoke.

Jasperdo

As sknight said, many times the karaoke on Princess ships is called Princess Pop Star. It isn't really billed in the Princess Patter as karaoke, but that's what it is. It does have a twist though. It's more of a competition, where the winners of each night compete on the last evening of the cruise. The passengers all vote on their favorite.

So, if you don't see regular karaoke mentioned in the Patter, see if they're doing Princess Pop Star, and that will be a karaoke competition.

I was disappointed that on my last Princess cruise (on the Ruby) there was only 1 night of karaoke. It was towards the beginning of the cruise during the same time as another show I wanted to see, so I decided to go to the show and do karaoke on another night, but it never came back.

We always attend the princess pop star competitions. As a matter of fact, some of the best participation and talent was on the island princess in Alaska. Of course there are some horrible and very brave singers as well. It is fun.

caribill

They had it on the Island Alaska cruises last year, both Princess Pop Star and at least one evening, late night karaoke at 11:30 PM.

They also had Princess Pop Choir.

Cool ! I always do tend to befriend the CD's staff. I was Elvis twice in the passenger show.

That was in the Caribbean ?.... so one would think there would be plenty of younger people who would get up there and "sing".

"horrible" ? that's good news for me, since I'm afraid of being kicked off the stage for being deemed horrible.

No one get's kicked off the stage, and more credit to those who have the guts to go up there and put on a show, no matter their singing ability.:D

That's what I keep telling myself. There are some nice singing voices turn up on these ships.
