It’s typically depicted in one of two ways: a plot device where characters must go back in time to prevent something from happening, or a game mechanic in which players manipulate time to overcome challenges.

In this list, we’ll showcase  the top time travel games to enjoy in 2024 , such as games about traveling through time and the finest time travel games for computer.

A common trend in more recent games is characters getting stuck in perpetual time loops and having to figure out a way to escape.

One of the more recent titles to explore this trope is Deathloop , an immersive sim shooter about a talented hitman who finds himself trapped in time on a party island with rival assassins.

To end the loop, you’ll have to eliminate the eight targets responsible for your serious case of déjà vu while also navigating the island’s numerous threats.

It’s a clever approach to open-ended gameplay that builds upon previous Arkane games such as Dishonored and only benefits from looking like an acid trip from the ‘70s.

The Forgotten City

Platforms: Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

Initially conceived as a Skyrim mod , The Forgotten City would eventually become a standalone game spearheaded by lead developer and writer Nick Pearce.

Set during an alternate version of the Roman Empire, it sees you exploring a city subjected to the Golden Rule: a religious mandate where any sinful action causes the entire population to turn into permanent gold statues.

While inspecting the rule’s origins and which transgressions it applies to, you’re advised someone in the city intends to violate it, urging you to travel back in time to prevent them.

It’s an interesting take on time travel that also explores the existential relationship between humanity and its laws, namely what is truly considered right or wrong.

Platform: PS5

Returnal is a PlayStation-exclusive third-person shooter about an astronaut who lands on an alien planet searching for a mysterious signal when she suddenly finds herself trapped in a time loop.

This is a great justification for the game’s roguelike design, which sees the protagonist resurrected after each death as she traverses the planet’s foreign environments and battles a host of extraterrestrial foes.

The further you progress, the stranger and more unsettling Selene’s visions become as she finds herself increasingly entangled in an ever-changing world.

If you manage to make it to the end and break the loop, you’ll be faced with some startling revelations about the main character and the planet that make for great sci-fi storytelling.

Although time travel generally involves going forward or backward in history, you can extend this further to account for multiple realities or planes of existence.

With this mindset, one could argue that the horror game The Medium uses time travel as a game mechanic, with the main character able to travel between the spirit world and the living world.

In a practical sense, this allows you to make changes in either world that affects the other, such as unlocking doors to progress, obtaining a key item to solve a puzzle, or warding off hostile enemies.

The story follows psychic Marianne as she’s mysteriously summoned to an abandoned hotel where she’ll have to use her powers to unravel its history and help free the spirits trapped within its grounds.

Reminiscence

Reminiscence is a story-driven, psychological horror game that has you warping, jumping, and rewinding time and space in order to save your family.

In it, you play as a man living in a world that’s about to collapse into anarchy who suddenly discovers their wife and kids have mysteriously disappeared.

While searching your home for clues, you stumble upon a watch that lets you travel between two eras: the post-apocalyptic present, and 1950s American suburbia.

By switching back and forth between both realities, you’re able to alter the state of certain objects to solve puzzles and advance the story.

Inspired by sci-fi classics like Back to the Future, No Time sees you stealing a suspiciously familiar time machine vehicle from a secret facility before setting off on a time-traveling adventure.

Unlike many games in the genre which center on heavily scripted missions, the game functions as a time travel simulator with both story and sandbox elements.

As a result, you’re free to explore any date throughout history from 0-2030 AD while making sure not to destroy the current timeline by interfering as little as possible and avoiding your younger self.

The game also features a day/night cycle, various job minigames and side quests, crafting, and a combat system for dealing with pesky Time Agents. 

Outer Wilds

If you’re looking for an engaging and immersive time travel game about space exploration , look no further than Outer Wilds .

You take on the role of the newest recruit for Outer Wilds Ventures, a fledgling space program looking to expand its knowledge of the galaxy and its ancestors’ mysterious disappearance.

The narrative addresses various sci-fi clichés such as black holes, antimatter, and of course time travel, with your character confined in an everlasting 22-minute time loop.

This is complemented by a densely packed open world consisting of hand-crafted, explorable planets with interesting backstories and distinct hazards that can be tricky to navigate.

Twelve Minutes

Twelve Minutes is an interactive thriller about a man having a romantic dinner with his wife when a mysterious man claiming to be a police detective shows up on his doorstep.

Things quickly escalate and eventually the man is killed, only to find himself transported to the beginning of the evening with his previous memories intact.

Confused and desperate, he sets out to break the time loop by searching the apartment for clues and interviewing each person involved.

While some of the game’s different endings get into weird, taboo territory, there are interesting puzzles and narrative threads to tug at that make the journey worthwhile, though we suggest following a guide.

In the stealth puzzle adventure game Timelie , every second matters and can bring you one step closer to freedom or death.

The game has you taking on the role of a young woman with a special gift that lets her control the flow of time as if it were a media player, rewinding and fast-forwarding to gain new insights. 

Harnessing this power allows her to manipulate obstacles in her path and avoid detection from robot patrols preventing her from leaving.

The story is quite compelling and the time travel mechanics are explored in some truly fascinating ways that become more complex the further you go.

The Gardens Between

The Gardens Between is an indie puzzle game created by The Voxel Agents that has you manipulating time 20 abstract, narrative-driven levels.

The game is unique in that you don’t control the main characters directly but rather move them backward and forwards through time while altering the state of different objects to progress.

Each level reveals more about the relationship between the two main characters, Arian and Frendt, chronicling the evolution of their friendship leading up to a life-changing event.

While it’s a short-lived experience, clocking in around 2.5 hours, The Gardens Between tells a compelling story and explores time travel mechanics in some fun and interesting ways.

Timespinner

Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, Mac

Inspired by ‘90s action-platformers, Timespinner is a story-driven Metroidvania about a magical timekeeper named Lunais who seeks out revenge after her family is murdered by an evil empire.

Her quest for justice brings her to a mysterious and hostile world where she’ll have no choice but to wield her time manipulation power to defend herself and rewrite history.

The game has you exploring beautiful, atmospheric pixel art environments while switching between the past and present as you defeat enemies and acquire new powers.

Mastering Lunais’ time-manipulating abilities open up new possibilities for combat, which is further complemented by familiars that can be trained to fight on your side.

Life Is Strange

A standout adventure title from Dontnod Studios and published by Square Enix, Life is Strange follows 18-year old aspiring photographer Max Caulfield as she comes to terms with her newfound powers.

Max has a supernatural ability that lets her move backward or forwards through time to alter the state of objects and their effect on the people around her.

Its applications vary depending on the scenario, allowing Max to mend relationships with her friends and family, solve bigger mysteries, and get revenge against the occasional bully.

Even if the gameplay aspect falls flat at times, the way time travel is introduced and incorporated into the structure of the story makes up for it.

Quantum Break

Platforms: Windows, Xbox One

Quantum Break is a cinematic action game from Remedy Games, best known for titles like Control and Alan Wake, and Max Payne.

In it, you take on the role of Jack Joyce, a man on a mission to prevent his timeline from ending by harnessing an array of unique time-based powers.

The story doubles as a live-action television series with certain events explained in further detail, which can require a bit more of a commitment than your average game.

With that said, Quantum Break is one of the best-looking time travel games in terms of graphical fidelity, boasting cool mind-bending camera tricks and special effects that still look great in 2024.

Superhot  sets itself apart from more traditional  FPS games  by introducing one clever mechanic: time only moves forward when you do.

This grants the player ample time to assess threats and determine the best course of action before setting it in motion with stylish shootouts and melee showdowns.

To ensure combat is always readable, the game employs a minimalist art style that does a great job at conveying info: enemies are always red, environments are white, and weapons are black.

While it’s best enjoyed in VR with full immersion, you’ll still have a lot of fun playing with a gamepad controller or just mouse and keyboard. 

Titanfall 2

Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One

The follow-up to Respawn’s criminally underrated  first-person shooter  features refined gunplay and fluid movement with a touch of time travel.

During Titanfall 2 ’s campaign, your character obtains a special wrist-mounted device that lets them swap back and forth between the past and present.  

This is helpful for exploring deteriorating buildings, avoiding clusters of foes, and solving nature-based challenges as pilot Jack Cooper.

Combine this with exciting parkour-based platforming and an arsenal of satisfyingly powerful weaponry and it’s easy to see why Titanfall fans want to see the series return.

BioShock Infinite

Time travel in the BioShock series is presented as a plot device in which certain characters, namely Elizabeth and the Lutece twins, can create dimensional time-alternating portals called Tears.

To that point, the game’s take on parallel universes and how they affect the overarching story can be boiled down to a single quote: “There’s always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a city.”

BioShock Infinite sees you venturing into a floating steampunk city called Columbia where citizens still cling to violent religious and racist beliefs.

In order to make sense of the series’ extensive timeline, consider playing through the first two games in the series or watching a recap video before starting Infinite.

Our final recommendation is Braid , a beloved indie puzzle platformer that comes from the mind of The Witness designer Jonathan Blow.

In it, you take on the role of a man named Tim as he attempts to rescue a princess from an evil monster using time manipulation.

If that description didn’t make it obvious enough, the game’s story is meant to critique popular trends in modern video games but also features some excellent time travel puzzles.

Levels cover everything from rewinding and fast-forwarding time, altering the state of certain objects, using your character’s movement to determine the flow of time, and much more we don’t wish to spoil.

Is time travel possible? Well, time travel is a pretty recognizable concept by now and has been around for as long as there have been people, whether in Hindu mythology or Japanese fairy tales. The idea of time travel in pop science fiction was widely popularized by H.G. Wells, who wrote the 1895 novel The Time Machine, as well as other stories that saw protagonists propelled into different eras.

While many modern games utilize some kind of repeating loop, like Hades or Loop Hero, the best time travel games take this a step further – allowing the player to distort time for their own ends, or forcing them to adapt to imprisonment within it.

10. Deathloop

Possibly the best PS5 exclusive to have released on the console at the time (though it has since released on Xbox too), Deathloop is a thrilling time-travel first-person shooter (FPS) romp from the developers behind Dishonored.

You play as Colt, an assassin, who is on a mission to eliminate eight ultra-powerful individuals. These gifted beings are exploiting a time loop machine on a subarctic island to live the same day over and over, essentially becoming immortal and being able to do whatever they desire every night without consequence.

You must take out all eight to stop the loop from restarting – using what you learn across multiple loops to navigate the island and complete your mission in one perfect run. With slick gunplay, a gripping story, and a fascinating sci-fi premise, we don’t recommend you sleep on this one.

9. Twelve Minutes

• Release date: August 19, 2021
• Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC

It’s a fun, curious mystery game, with plenty of satisfaction to be had from toying with the objects and locations in your compact apartment to see how it’ll affect the outcome.

A curious time loop game, mostly in the star talent brought in to voice its trio of main characters: Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker), James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Trance), and Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Lighthouse).

The action takes place in a small, one-bedroom apartment, where McAvoy’s protagonist comes home to find a number of surprises waiting for him – one of which is an armed assailant claiming to be a police officer pounding on their door. When you’re knocked unconscious, you begin the time loop again and have to figure out what’s really going on in order to escape the loop for good.

8. Titanfall 2

• Release date: October 28, 2016
• Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

The sequel to Respawn’s futuristic mecha-combat FPS is a thrilling ride. It has a single-player campaign that pivots effortlessly between fascinating game mechanics, never feeling a need to dwell too long on each one.

The time travel mission, ‘Effect and Cause,’ is a real standout. It allows you to shift between the past and present mid-air as you run, shoot, and platform your way across an expansive military facility. Paired with Respawn’s excellent gunplay, this acclaimed shooter offers far more imagination than the average Call of Duty game.

The brisk campaign has plenty of other thrills to recommend it, but its seamless utilization of time travel as an integral game mechanic – even while limited to a single level – makes it well worth inclusion in this list.

7. Outer Wilds

• Release date: May 28, 2019
• Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, PC

Another time loop game, you say? Outer Wilds is a standout indie game, so much so that it’s made our best space games list. It sees you scour a solar system to unpack its mysteries, over a series of 22-minute time loops that reset your progress just as the nearest sun explodes into a supernova. Phew.

As with Deathloop, you’ll have to do more than simply map out the game – needing to learn when certain events occur, or which actions are available in the orbits of the solar system’s planetary bodies. Starting out as a student project, Outer Wilds has gone on to be one of the best indie games in recent years, with a heady mix of environmental exploration, galactic mystery, and survival sim all in one.

6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

• Release date: November 21, 1998
• Platform: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo Switch

The best game of all time? It’s hard to argue with this assessment for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (OoT), a landmark 3D action-adventure game that launched on the Nintendo 64 in 1998. In it, the young hero Link finds a magical ocarina which is able to change the weather, transport him across distant lands, and even propel him through time to a post-apocalyptic world.

It’s not a one-way trip, thankfully, and much of the puzzle work in OoT is in traveling back and forth between time periods, using what you learn and obtain to progress in each setting. As ever, you’re fighting a great evil, battling monsters, gathering weapons and tools for your journey, and figuring out troublesome dungeons – but time travel is what elevates Ocarina of Time into a game of truly mythical proportions.

It's an oldie, but a goodie. You can find the game through Nintendo Switch Online, or on Nintendo DS systems.

5. Quantum Break

• Release date: April 5, 2016
• Platform: Xbox One, PC

Back in 2016 when Quantum Break released, it was the best-selling game published by Microsoft on the Xbox One. While it soon ceded that title to Sea of Thieves (who needs time travel when you have sea shanties?) it’s still a landmark game, and a fascinating experiment in interactive storytelling.

The main conceit of Quantum Break is its mix of gameplay with an interactive TV show that breaks up the story’s five acts, allowing you to make key decisions that affect the narrative for the rest of the game.

Originally conceived as a sequel to Alan Wake, before pivoting into a new IP, Quantum Break is set in a world where a failed time travel experiment allows you to halt, freeze, accelerate, and generally manipulate time around you – inevitably used to ramp up combat as you take on hordes of soldiers and try to fix a fracture in time itself. Time ‘stutters’ can also freeze objects in your environment, creating obstacles or platforms that help and hinder your progress along the way.

4. Life is Strange

• Release date: January 20, 2015
• Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, Android

While more recent Life is Strange games play around with the powers of empathy, or telekinesis, the original game is what started the franchise off with such aplomb – following the fortunes of a young girl who is able to rewind time.

Maxine ‘Max’ Caulfield discovers her time-manipulation ability when a classmate faces an unexpected danger – managing to undo the day’s events and keep them alive. As ever, time travel has unintended consequences, and while Max can aid or even save various people in her life, she finds the outcome isn’t always for the best in the long term. 

With a strikingly impressionistic art style, branching narratives, surprisingly high stakes for a high school story, and a good helping of teen angst, this episodic adventure is well worth a try.

3. Wanderer

• Release date: January 27, 2022
• Platform: PlayStation VR, SteamVR, Oculus

If you’re looking for a time-travel VR game, you’ve come to the right place. Wanderer is a first-person puzzle adventure that has you traveling back through time to prevent an apocalyptic present.

With a talking watch on your wrist, and the ability to jump to different places and periods, Wanderer lives up to its name, seeing you jettison across centuries of history and even to the moon. In each case, action is found in localized puzzles (escape rooms, essentially), some of which take imaginative back-and-forth travel to get the right objects for the right situation. 

You’ll get around 10 hours of play out of this one, along with some brain-bending puzzles that make the most of the VR medium (along with one of the best VR headsets )

• Release date: August 6, 2008
• Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Switch, PC, Mac, Linux

Few games play so successfully with time as Braid, a 2008 indie platformer initially launched on Xbox 360 to great acclaim. The developer went on to create The Witness with the profits from this game.

You play Tim, who is trying to find and rescue a princess from some unspecified monster. So far, so Mario. However, things aren’t quite so simple as running and jumping on Goombas: Braid utilizes a number of different time-based mechanics, from a simple rewind (helpful after jumping and missing a ledge) to whole levels that move forward in time as you move right and backward as you move left.

It’s a mind-melting game in many ways, and you may find the story elusive at first, it being gradually pieced together by jigsaw pieces you collect throughout your journey – and blown open by its subversive conclusion. But a recurring theme is the idea of wanting to redo or undo the past, and you won’t find a game that needles this idea as effectively or imaginatively as Braid.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

• Release date: April 27, 2000
• Platform: Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo DS

How could we list the best time travel games without Majora’s Mask? This follow-up to Ocarina of Time takes place in the same land of Hyrule as its predecessor just two months later, even re-using many in-game assets. The key difference is that an unhinged-looking moon going to crash into the Earth, obliterating everything – and you find yourself reliving the same three days over and over in an attempt to prevent the cataclysmic event from happening.

Those three days come to around an hour of actual gameplay time, meaning you play through a loop quite swiftly, but the real magic of Majora’s Mask is in how it expands on the time-warping magic of OoT. Here you’ll use the ocarina to jump back to the start of the loop, slow down the passage of time, or jump forward to a later day, navigating time like a puzzle dungeon in need of solving.

Earning widespread acclaim, Majora’s Mask has been rereleased several times throughout the years. For modern gamers, you can find the game through Nintendo Switch Online, or on Nintendo DS systems.

Using time travel in any media is rough. Most of the time, the act of traveling through time does nothing but make things confusing and/or remove all sense of urgency or consequence from any narrative. But, out of everything, time travel tends to work best in video games, primarily because it's a fun mechanic to use.

And no, we don't mean games where you can change the in-game "time" for secrets  like the Animal Crossing games;  we're talking about IPs where time manipulation is a core part of the game and/or story. Think of classics like Legacy of Kain or modern takes like Titanfall 2's Effect and Cause mission . Here are 10 time travel games you have to play.

10 Blinx: The Time Sweeper

First up is a real oddball game: Blinx: The Time Sweeper. Blinx came out in 2002 and is an action platform much in the same way a lot of the games from that age were. But, rather than just focusing on jumping, you can mess around with time in a variety of ways, thanks to Blinx being a Time Sweeper with a magical vacuum called the TS-1000.

They're honestly all pretty stereotypical time-based abilities such as freezing time, slowing it down, speeding it up, or "recording" a moment in time. So, it’s not the best game, but if you want something that’s heavily focused on messing around with time, Blinx might work for you.

9 Life is Strange

The standout game from Dontnod Studios and published by Square Enix, Life is Strange was pretty huge for a while, thanks to its well-received LGBTQ+ representation, unique hipster atmosphere, and creative method of storytelling. In it, Max Caulfield, an 18-year old with a real eye for photography, suddenly discovers she has a time travel ability, and a mysterious plot starts to unravel from there.

Your goal in this game is to just experience Max's story, rewinding time to solve scenario’s in the best way possible. Sometimes it’s something more serious like fixing Chloe and Max’s relationship and other times it's using your supernatural abilities to enjoy  some oddly beautiful mundane moments . Life is Strange is incredibly neat and very time travel-focused, but in terms of gameplay, it falls short compared to almost everything else on this list.

Then there's Braid  -- a game from the mind of Jonathan Blow who is known in the industry as a bit of a genius as he was also behind The Witness. Braid is a 2D puzzle-platformer, but that's far too simple a label for what Braid actually manages to accomplish.

In this game, you’ll be treated to a wide variety of puzzles -- all of which are designed to manipulate time in some way, as well as challenge your current preconceptions about video game puzzles. It might look simplistic at first, but Braid has so many different ways of messing with time in inventive ways.

7 Zero Time Dilemma

The Zero Escape series is an incredibly interesting set of games. There’s the first game Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors , then Virtue’s Last Reward, and now: Zero Time Dilemma. In these games, you'll be puzzle-solving, picking who lives or who dies, and attempting to solve a mind-bogglingly complex mystery. But, where does time-travel come in?

Well, there are a variety of endings depending on who you pick to perish since the story goes on without them afterward. But, canonically, all of these alternate endings are canon as the in-game codex refers to them as alternate timelines. And, in Virtue’s Last Reward, there are even certain characters who are able to mess with time more directly, so it's an integral part of the series.

6 Quantum Break

Quantum Break  comes from Remedy Studios who are most known for creating Control , Alan Wake , and all the Max Payne games before that. In it, you control Jack Joyce, a man out to stop the end of time ( which technically already passed ) with the time-based powers he was granted. It's a game that also doubles as a tv show which is pretty creative but is also a huge turnoff for some people.

And, because Quantum Break leans so heavily into the mechanics of time travel, many players found the plot absurdly confusing. That said, the graphical fidelity, gameplay loop, and design of Quantum Break are all very well done, and the game itself is a blast to play.

We were going to put Timeshift on here, but quite frankly, Superhot does a better job as a time-manipulation shooter than Timeshift does. And it does so with arguably fewer mechanics overall. The stylistic game is centered around players solving combat “puzzles” where time only moves when you do.

The game first came out in 2016, but the movement in it was something people desperately wanted to see adapted for VR-play, so the developers (Superhot Team) managed to pull that off by the end of the year and even made a sequel not long after called Superhot: Mind, Control, Delete. Whether you play Superhot with mouse + keyboard, controller, or a VR headset, you're guaranteed to have a blast.

4 Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time

Other than Blinx, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the other game that immediately comes to mind when time travel is mentioned. In it, you take control of the Prince as he runs through India trying to reverse his own horrible mistake of releasing the Sands of Time that warped both the people and landscape.

To do this, the Prince must use a variety of time-changing abilities, such as reversing time, freezing it for a single opponent, or stopping time altogether for everything but himself. These mechanics, paired with the immensely satisfying platforming and the relatively complex combat, create a game so iconic, that it sort of represents the time-manipulation genre of video games.

3 Timesplitters 2

Timesplitters 2 is a beloved classic that everyone remembers fondly. In fact, there was a fake teased remake for the second game not too long ago that caused such backlash from the fanbase THQ Nordic had to come out and apologize. Timesplitters 2 was the multiplayer shooter that fans of the N64 Goldeneye had been waiting 5 years for.

It had fantastic multiplayer maps, 50+ unlockable characters, a level editor, a hilarious campaign, and so much more. But, what about the time travel aspects? Well, that's the whole concept for the game, since you play as a Space Marine named Cortez who travels through time collecting "time crystals" to stop an alien race called the Timesplitters from destroying humanity.

2 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Oracle of Ages, Seasons, & Majora's Mask

How could we talk about time travel without mentioning the Legend of Zelda games? The series just recently had its 35th anniversary, after all, and the "Zelda Timeline" is something any video game fan knows about. In particular, there are four that really focus on time-travel, those being Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages. All four of these games handle the concept of time-travel in a different way.

Ocarina of Time basically has two time periods you hop back and forth from with Young Link and Adult Link. Majora’s Mask takes place over the same period of 3 days, experienced over and over as Link learns to “master” the time loop. Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages might seem like two versions of the same game, like Pokemon Red and Blue, but there are actually a variety of big gameplay differences. All four of these games handle time-travel in inventive ways without overcomplicating the plot or gameplay itself.

1 Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is probably one of the most enjoyable time-hopping stories of all time simply because the dev team at Square put an immeasurable amount of work into it without taking the game itself too seriously. This 90s masterpiece is focused on the story of Chrono as he gathers party members (like a giant robot or a frog knight) from different time periods to save the entire world.

It's an RPG that still holds up insanely well thanks to the incredible character designs from Dragon Ball Z's Akira Toriyama, as well as the inventive combat system. There's just so much to love about Chrono Trigger, and we haven't even mentioned its sequel Chrono Cross either.

Time travel has always been a popular theme in video games. Last year's The Game Awards winner was the time-loop game Deathloop . One of the most anticipated games is a remake of the seminal time travel classic The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time . That game has unfortunately been delayed indefinitely, but time travel remains popular in gaming.

From time loops to time travel, there have been plenty of games to use temporal themes. This can be in simple level themes or take the basis for the game's story and some games even allow time to factor into the game mechanics. All the best games that feature time in major ways have been ranked by the review aggregator Metacritic.

Fire Emblem Awakening (2013) - 92

Fire Emblem Awakening was the breakout success of Fire Emblem . The game was a massive hit with critics and fans alike and blew up the series in popularity. Part of this was the unique way it utilized time travel. The game's narrative originally seemed straightforward until Lucina, male lead Chrom's child from the future, arrived in the present.

The game's permadeath-based strategy system was as fun as ever however, time travel was actually used to get new units rather than save old ones. Depending on which characters in your army spent time together, players would get different stats for that couple's child from the future. This allowed players to create relationships among their party members with few canon restrictions.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003) - 92

Recently, there was an HD remake announced for The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time  but unfortunately, that project has now been indefinitely delayed, which makes sense with the game's time theme. The game allowed for novel manipulation of time through its mechanics. The titular prince uses an artifact called the Dagger of Time to rewind time and fix mistakes.

The Prince can also use the dagger to fight and freeze enemies in time. The enemies themselves are also temporal, being summoned by the titular Sands of Time. Aside from the time-based mechanics, the game incentivized parkour-based platforming in a big city, and the mechanics in this game would later inspire the similar Assassin Creed game series .

Sonic CD (2011) - 93

Back in the 90s, there were two attempts to make the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog . In the end, one became Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the other became Sonic CD. Sonic CD has always been an oddball among the classic Sonics, with its best version being its iOS port, strangely. Part of that strangeness is due to the game's focus on time travel mechanics.

All of the levels feature four distinct time periods to explore. There's the past, the present, a bad future, and a good future; by running past time travel signs as fast as possible, Sonic can access these areas and even change the future from bad to good. Sonic will feature more time travel in the future, but this game is where it hit the peak for many fans.

God of War II (2007) - 93

Eventually, Kratos would defeat Zeus, but players facing Zeus at the beginning of God of War II were perhaps skeptical of the spartan's chances. Zeus completely smites Kratos where he stands, and the rest of the game is a trek through time to avert his death. Kratos would eventually come into conflict with the Fates and the god of time themselves to save himself in this sequel.

Using the Loom of Fate is less of a gameplay function and more of a story one. This allows Kratos to journey to many exciting locales over the game. This includes Zeus' famous war with the titans millennia before Kratos was born. There are a few puzzles with timed themes, but this time travel adventure is more just a trip throughout Greek mytho-history.

Day of the Tentacle (1993) - 93

Day of the Tentacle is a classic LucasArts adventure game from the 90s . It's the sequel to Maniac Mansion but has a much different setup than that game. Rather than a large group of selectable teens, the player controls three specific teens. Each of these characters is trapped in a different period of history.

Of the three protagonists, only the returning Bernard remains in the present; Hoagie and Lavern are sent 200 years into the past and present respectively. However, the protagonist can switch between them at any time, leading to a lot of interesting puzzles regarding causality. The game received high praise for its puzzles and sense of humor.

Braid (2008) - 93

Braid was one of the earliest indie darling video games . There's lots of discussion about the themes of Braid and what it really means. One thing that's a lot less up for debate is Braid's central mechanic. The protagonist, Tim, can rewind time to undo his mistakes, however, the temporal shenanigans don't simply end there.

Future levels introduce more temporal mechanics like objects that aren't affected by time travel. Another level introduced a clone that spawns when time travel is activated and the ending famously reverses the entire game to change its plot. This simple application of time travel was enough for critics to call Braid one of the best games of all time.

Chrono Series (1995 and 2000) - 94

The Chrono series are tied extremely closely to time travel. The two RPGs are very different from each other, but given their shared focus on time, they're best discussed together. Chrono Cross ranked higher on Metacritic but doesn't actually feature time travel. While it is an incredibly ambitious Playstation 1 game, it actually mainly deals with alternate universes instead.

The original Chrono Trigger features the time travel theme more freely. Characters can freely travel between eras and discover new facts about the world's history; however, both games are united in the end goal of stopping an apocalyptic force. Both of these classics are available on modern platforms, ensuring their legacies live on.

Bioshock Infinite (2013) - 94

Bioshock Infinite is one of the most ambitious games of the Tens. It was juggling a lot of heavy philosophical and philosophical themes alongside tackling time travel. In it, the main female lead, Elizabeth, can manipulate the space-time continuum to her will.

This manipulation can take the form of simple teleportation to more complex time travel. Alternate universes are also explored through different versions of the protagonist and Elizabeth. In fact, the game's plot twist revolves heavily around an alternate form of the main city being created by time travel. Some may find it complex, but Bioshock Infinite incorporates time in a variety of ways.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000) - 95

For lots of fans, Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game . That's because of its intimate relationship with time. The entire game world is on a timer, and events happen based on what time it is. This could be stressful, if not for the fact that The Legend of Zelda hero Link can manipulate time to make it easier.

The aforementioned time activities occur within a three-day time loop. Link can manipulate this loop by playing the Ocarina of Time. It allows him to speed up, slow down, freeze, and restart the time loop. Using this extraordinary ability feels great, as it lets the player take control of a usually inevitable system in time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) - 99

Of course, Majora's Mask wasn't the first Zelda game to feature time manipulation. Ocarina of Time often called the best game of its time, allowed the manipulation of time as well. However, this isn't done through the titular instrument, but through the Temple of Time area in Hyrule Castle Town. By sheathing and unsheathing the Master Sword, Link can travel between past and future.

The midpoint of the game throws out a big twist in the form of the seven-year time skip; Link is no longer a child, but now an adult adventurer. This is shocking, but Link can travel back in time easily enough, and the end of the game restores his lost youth to him. However, there are still many things to do when time traveling, like unlocking the Spirit and Shadow temples. Ocarina 's clever use of time earned it the praise it has received for decades.

8 Assassin's Creed

The Assassin's Creed series has you revisiting your ancestors' memories instead of traveling back in time. Animus , the machine that enables you to do so, is a DNA-code-reading machine instead of a time-traveling one. Many of your ancestors have had a huge effect on history , and you get to experience it firsthand.

In the Stilton Manor level, players are given a device letting them view the level through a piece of glass, allowing them to travel back three years in the past. 3 Time Traveling Mech Pilots In Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 slipped through the cracks at launch, as it was sandwiched between the new releases of Call of Duty and Battlefield. It was mainly picked up by fans of the first game, but would later get more recognition after the success of Apex: Legends . What players realized is that the single-player story campaign of Titanfall 2 was a great FPS adventure where, in certain levels, players operated a time-travel device in order to shift between times.

This allowed the player to encounter enemies in a firefight, warp to a new time, change their position to behind the group, then warp back and blast away. Some platforming elements also needed the aid of time travel, warping between times to land on platforms and get across spanning chasms.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time served as a reboot for the franchise once Ubisoft took it over . Players take control of The Prince and, after acquiring the Dagger of Time, use it to manipulate time in order to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

Day Of The Tentacle is an adventure game of unparalleled intelligence and a never-bettered exercise of lateral thinking via the principles of causation. You travel through time in a toilet .

Final Fantasy VIII

The villain of the objectively best Final Fantasy is a time-teetering witch god called Ultimecia who can possess other people just by sleeping and dreaming about the past. Others on this list need a machine, but Ulty can time warp just by having a lie down and feeling nostalgic. She can send her very vibe back through time. What a strong lady. Her ultimate desire is to “compress” time like a big WinZip file. And, honestly, who can blame her.

Outer Wilds

Well done, videogames. It only took you 26 years to figure out that Groundhog Day’s conceit was perfectly suited to a medium dedicated to repetition and death. (Huh? Majora’s what? Never heard of it.) While the Sexy Brutale used a time loop to indulge the player in an endless murder masquerade, playful space exploration game Outer Wilds uses the same gimmick to kill you with an inescapable supernova blast every 22 minutes. I know which eternal cycle of mortal anxiety I prefer .

Don’t worry, 22 minutes is plenty of time to admire the mini solar system, and travel to distant worlds where the sand from one planet falls unceasingly onto another in the shape of a giant hourglass. Outer Wilds is a game that understands the great calmness of non-existence, the sweet release of the coming nothing. All things must end, say the blue alien folk singers of this existentialist relief sim. Enjoy it when it happens. Sit down, roast a marshmallow, have a nice sigh.

Bold choice to make this completely hands-free, but the designers nailed it.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

There is no greater emblematic assertion that the Gregorian calendar is an arbitrary attempt to ignore the chaos of existence than when I stab you with my time knife. This Prince Of Persia reboot popularised wall-running and the “undo death” button at the same time. It is Braid for people who do not like wank. It is also framed as an Arabian Nights style story, told by a princely protagonist to a princess who doesn’t know him. So when you hurl the lad to his death too many times in a level, his narrator voiceover pops up on the “game over” screen. “Wait,” he protests, “it didn’t happen like that.” That's a fun touch, but it also means the eejit is sitting there in the princess’s chamber going: “And then I jumped over the 279th pit of spikes, or was it the 280th? But anyway I fell and died, no wait I didn’t die, ha ha, obviously I didn’t die, where was I?” Imagine being accosted in your own home by a coked-up intruder who keeps telling you about his dreams. That’s what this girl is experiencing. For 10 hours.

Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time

A point and click adventure in which an inconvenient bomb sends you back through time to save one of Hitler’s rubbish paintings from going down with the Titanic in 1912, thus making the artwork famous and prompting the anti-semite to continue his art career instead of his fascism career, completely averting World War II. All this without resorting to a single zappy handshake. Take that, Einstein.

However, in Life Is Strange , Max’s ability to rewind time quickly becomes a curse. After the aspiring photographer saves her estranged former bestie Chloe from certain death, the repercussions of those actions ripple and reverberate in wildly unpredictable ways.

Throughout all five episodes of Square Enix and Dontnod Entertainment’s choice-driven narrative adventure, Max comes to realize that her cool little party trick is not only breaking her mind — it’s also the instigating factor behind an otherworldly storm that’s going to destroy her hometown and everyone in it.

Life Is Strange may have inspired a few too many “sad in the Pacific Northwest” copycat games, but the way in which it uses this familiar trope to immerse players in the bond between Chloe and Max is truly unforgettable.

4. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

This watercolored visual novel punctuated with real-time strategy interludes is an exercise in sci-fi maximalism. It tosses every trope and plot twist you could possibly imagine at the wall — Angsty teens piloting mechs! World War II! Magical girls! Off-brand Terminator cyborgs! Convenient amnesia! Yet, miraculously, it all somehow works.

With 13 protagonists and all sorts of timey-wimey hijinks, there’s no way you’re going to be able to keep the story straight without some serious flow charting. But it doesn’t matter. For the most part, 13 Sentinels doesn’t tell a story in a linear fashion but instead invites you to explore its sprawling web of cause and effect however you choose. The result is trippy, kaleidoscopic, and exhilarating.

Originally released on PS4 back in 2020, 13 Sentinels is now available on Nintendo Switch , and the chill, dialogue-heavy gameplay loop makes it an ideal handheld experience. This is the perfect game to stay up far too late with — and inspire some kooky dreams once you’ve put it aside for the night.

3. 428 Shibuya Scramble

428: Shibuya Scramble is a wonderfully absurd and deeply complex take on the time-travel formula.

Spike Chunsoft’s underappreciated gem first debuted on the Nintendo Wii all the way back in 2008. This hilarious, genre-blending visual novel sees five protagonists — a scientist, a journalist, a gang member, a detective, and an amnesiac — simultaneously caught up in a looming terrorist event in Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood.

428 ’s story is told with a blend of live-action videos and still photos. The crew took more than 120,000 images for the game, all while outrunning or outwitting the local police, since they did not have permission to film.

While most games centered on time travel focus on big leaps between dramatically different eras, 428 focuses solely on the events of a single day, broken up into 10 hour-long chunks. Often, your aim is to get the characters’ paths to cross at the right time — but with 87 possible endings, there are a whole lot of ways that things can go hilariously wrong. You’ll spend a lot of time backtracking — 10 minutes here, an hour there — but the scenarios unfold so differently depending on your choices that the core gameplay never gets too repetitive.

428 was far enough ahead of its time that it still feels fresh even today, yet its influences can be seen in the off-kilter humor and rich sense of place found in the Yakuza games, as well as the character-swapping mechanics of 13 Sentinels .

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Link awakens seven years older.

The first 3D entry in Nintendo’s venerable action-RPG series, 1998’s Ocarina of Time is the Paddington 2 of video games, with an eye-popping average critic’s score of 99 on review aggregator Metacritic .

It all plays out fairly Sword in the Stone -ish, as Zelda games tend to do. After exploring a few dungeons and beating some baddies, young Link pulls the Master Sword from its resting place in the Temple of Time in the hopes of defeating the nefarious Ganondorf. But he’s blinded by a flash of light (and evil cackles) and falls unconscious, awakening moments later in the company of a sage who tells him he’s aged seven years.

Eventually, you’ll be able to travel between both versions of the world at will, using knowledge, skills, and items acquired in each era to prevent the downfall of Hyrule.

Ocarina is one of those rare games that made a home for itself in the hearts of millions of players around the world. With clues trickling out that the sequel to Breath of the Wild will incorporate some kind of time-travel element , it’s clear that influence is alive and well today, nearly a quarter-century later.

1. Chrono Trigger

No game engages with the concept of time travel in a more satisfying and meaningful way than Chrono Trigger . And it’s one of few games that appropriately appreciate the appeal of a completely badass time machine. The Epoch, which you acquire during a jaunt to the ruined future of 2300 AD, is one of the coolest vehicles ever to grace a game console.

Time travel in Chrono Trigger is far more than a one-time gimmick or cutscene; it’s deeply woven into fundamental elements of the experience. Even while exploring the humdrum homes of NPCs, you’re encouraged to tinker around with the effects of your actions in the past on the future. (For instance, you could open those treasure chests in Porre Village circa 600 A.D at the earliest opportunity. But you’ll get a much bigger bang for your buck if you waggle your magic pendant in front of them and come back 400 years later.)

In addition to opening up more than a dozen different endings, Chrono Trigger uses its central gimmick to tell affecting stories about each of its playable characters. The adventure opens with Marle stumbling face-first into a kinda-sorta grandmother paradox situation, Lucca’s able to save her mother from a life-changing accident, and Robo’s able to transform a wasteland into a verdant forest — but only after spending a few centuries tilling the soil. Chrono Trigger ’s story and world are very simple by modern standards, but the game’s depth and timelessness stem from the rich intricacy with which time travel is integrated into both.

Humankind has long desired to return to the past and change mistakes, or look into the future to see our destiny. It's a topic that popular culture likes to play with, and has been a regular trope in video games since the 1980s. One of the first games I played on the Commodore 64 was called Battle Through Time , a sideways-scrolling, time-hopping shooter with a lax attitude to music copyright licensing.

Fortunately, as enjoyable as the game was, the scene has evolved considerably in the past 35 years or so. If you're fed up with the present, the following ten games all rely on time travel as a key aspect of gameplay.

1. Steins;Gate (2009)

A visual novel video game that is also the sequel to 2008's Chaos;Head (both part of the Science Adventure series), Steins;Gate has a heavy time travel gameplay element. Embracing the concept of cause and effect, the player (who assumes the role of Rintar? Okabe) must travel back and forth in time, changing events in the past to influence the future.

Since this is a visual novel, your job is to direct the main characters into making choices. The game presents several non-linear plotlines, each with their own branches. This will ensure each game takes a different path. Steins;Gate is available on Windows, PS3, PSP, Android, and iOS.

2. No Time to Explain (2011)

A fun game that totally runs with the idea of time travel and paradox effects, this one takes its name from the popular fictional trope. (Namely, the one that papers over cracks in plots with a quick piece of dismissive dialogue!)

Another game that blends the platform puzzler genre with an adventure format, No Time to Explain is fast, frenetic fun. Just try not to think about it too much, because those paradoxes will probably send your head into a spin!

Originally released in 2011, No Time to Explain was issued on Windows, macOS, and Linux ( via Steam ). The remastered version added releases for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

3. The Silent Age (2015)

A compelling, atmospheric side-scrolling adventure puzzler, The Silent Age embraces the idea of time travel as a key game mechanic. Switching back and forth through two time-zones -- as easily as you would jump in another game -- is necessary as part of the puzzle solving process . It's an idea that really works, too.

Following its popular mobile release on iOS and Android, The Silent Age has been updated for Windows and macOS. We'd recommend you take a look if you're a fan of time travel. Personally, I've been stuck on this game for months, so if you have any tips, feel free to share them below!

4. Life Is Strange (2015)

Ever wanted to rewind time and do everything differently? This is the premise behind Life Is Strange , an episodic video graphic novel with an interactive aspect. Each decision you make as photography student Max Caulfield has ramifications -- it's therefore important to make the right choices. Failure will see the town where Max lives destroyed in an oncoming storm. Solving puzzles is a key feature of success in this award-winning game.

Even better, the first episode is available free on all platforms. You'll find it on Windows, macOS, and Linux, where you don't even need a mouse to play it . It's also on PlayStation 3 and 4, plus Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Life Is Strange has an impending sequel, Life Is Strange 2 , in development. In addition, a prequel, Before the Storm , was released in August 2017.

5. Chrono Trigger (1995)

Combining RPG gameplay with time travel, Chrono Trigger takes place in a huge world, where the player can visit seven time periods. Although the in-game world isn't Earth, it features a prehistoric age with dinosaurs, plus a medieval zone with knights and monsters. There's also a post-apocalyptic future era.

With multiple endings, plot-related side quests, and character development (rare in a game from the 1990s), Chrono Trigger is often found in lists of the best video games of all time .

Although originally released on the SNES and PlayStation in 1995, Chrono Trigger was subsequently ported to the Nintendo DS, iOS, and Android from 2009.

6. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003)

Perhaps one of the most famous games of all time -- and responsible for a movie of the same name -- this game features a magical, time-manipulating dagger. After being tricked into breaking the Sands of Time hourglass, the main character (the Prince) must use the Dagger of Time to restore the hourglass by defeating the monsters it has unleashed. This is done by rewinding moments of the game to undo mistakes, as well as using the dagger to freeze and kill enemies.

Often cited as the title that revived the Prince of Persia brand, The Sands of Time was released on Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, Windows, and PlayStation 3.

7. Spider-Man: Edge of Time (2011)

A super hero game crossed with time travel? Yes! Spider-Man: Edge of Time features original Spider-Man Peter Parker, along with Miguel O'Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099. Edge of Time is a sequel to the 2010 game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and features a cause-and-effect mechanism.

In short, events in the earlier time period can impact the later one. But there's more to it than that: you can also expect to see popular Spider-Man villains and perform some time-zone hopping!

Released on Nintendo DS, 3DS, Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, digital copies of the game are no longer available due licensing issues. However, it should be possible to pick up a physical copy from your favorite online game store .

8. Radiant Historia (2010)

Another Nintendo-based RPG, Radiant Historia takes place in the war-torn, plague-ridden continent of Vainquer. Here, you guide the main character, Stocke, in solving puzzles and expanding the inventory. Most intriguing, however, is the use of the White Chronicle, a book that guides time travel along parallel timelines. For instance, challenges in timeline A can typically be solved by collecting items from timelines B and C.

Originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2010, Radiant Historia has an upcoming expanded remaster planned to arrive on Nintendo 3DS in spring 2018. It's called Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology . If you can wait to play this version, do so -- many remastered games are worth playing again !

Unfortunately, no other platforms have yet been graced with Radiant Historia .

9. Braid (2008)

A puzzle-platform video game, Braid gives the player the ability to undo mistakes, rewinding time in a similar manner to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time . You reach each in-game world from main character Tim's home, and each has its own time manipulation property. For instance, in one world, the direction the character moves in will change the flow of time (left/right, back/forth). In other worlds, objects may be immune to manipulation, or you can slow them down.

Puzzles and platform action take on a whole new dimension in this small-but-awesome indie game .

Braid was initially released for Xbox 360, followed by versions for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 3, and Linux.

10. Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock (2012)

No list of time traveling adventures can be complete without mention of Doctor Who , the long-running British TV show . Over the years, the show has had many video game spin-offs, but the one that relies on time travel the most is The Eternity Clock . This is essentially a side scrolling platform adventure game, taking place in different connected eras. It features Daleks, Cybermen, and other popular monsters from the series.

Featuring the voices of Matt Smith and Alex Kingston as the Doctor (#11) and River Song, The Eternity Clock was released on Windows, PS3 and PS Vita. Though initially criticized for its tricky controls, difficulty level, some bugs and lack of save points, subsequent updates have patched these issues. While it's generally considered that the PC version is superior to the PS3 release, this is no longer widely available.

Time Travel Tennis

Time Travel Tennis is a shot-by-shot computer simulation of professional tennis. With over 280 men and over 120 women individually rated and normalized available for purchase, you can match the greats of all tennis eras against each other, either in one-off exhibition matches or across a full tour of your creation.

Each player is individually rated for over 15 shot types, as well as playing style, mentality, temperament, hot and cold streaks and even performances in slams. It’s not just skill which wins a match and Time Travel Tennis replicates this. Strengths and weakness across different surfaces are also represented so you will see clay court specialists play well on clay and less well on others.

Tours are easy to create and default schedules are provided to get you up and running with a few clicks. It is very easy to amend or even create your own schedules. Once a tour is over you can roll it to a new year and then add or remove players from the tour.

The powerful auto-watch option allows you to focus on the exciting moments of a tournament and let the computer automatically play out the

routine matches. The top seed winning 6-2, 6-2 is not a story but if they are break-point down in the final set you can be sure that the crowd will get excited, and you will be able to see the match from that point, either watching or stepping in to control one or both players.

You can also select players from the tour you want to manually play out, or players you just want to keep an eye on. This all makes playing a tournament as exciting as possible.

You can of course watch or play every point if you wish. A simple animation brings the points to life and you can elect to control one or both players or switch them over to AI control and watch the match unfold. Strategic options are available during a rally allowing you to be aggressive, defensive, go to the net or stay back. Players’ style is also incorporated so you will see a difference in strategy between a serve and volley specialist and a baseliner.

Prize money and ranking lists are kept as well as other common tennis stats, and a match review screen allows you to review match stats on a set by set basis, view a point by point summary and even see how individual points played out.

Doubles Expansion

Doubles is more than just putting four singles players on a court and the doubles expansion for Time Travel Tennis reflects this. Every available player has been separately rated for their doubles performances. When this expansion set is purchased all your previously purchased players will have their doubles cards unlocked.

Doubles players have a full shot card for lobs (reflecting the importance of this shot in doubles play), as well as having preferred partners to replicate regular and successful doubles partnerships.

New strategies include poaching returns, angled volleys and different formations (available for rated partnerships).

The gameplay itself reflects the different doubles strategies where getting to the net is critical. A new bounced overhead result reflects that in doubles

there is more emphasis on keeping the ball alive than going for outright winners. The angled volley result allows for exciting rallies at the net.

You will see players work as a team, target weaknesses (especially in mixed doubles), and experience a completely different style of tennis.

We have also included four new team event formats. Davis/Fed Cup formats as well as the Laver Cup format are available for both men and ladies. If you own at least one men’s and one ladies’ set then the Hopman Cup and Team Tennis formats will also be available. Team Tennis has its own unique scoring system, designed for a quick-fire style of tennis where every game matters.

These team events can be played in league format (round robin or double round robin) with up to 16 teams, or knockout (single elimination) with up to 32 teams.

Many of the games we show here can be accessed via Microsoft's PC Game Pass and some will be impressive indie titles that don't really belong in a single genre. At any rate, we'll update this section regularly whenever there's a big game that everyone seems to be playing.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Ghost of Tsushima: DIRECTOR'S CUT

Dragon's Dogma 2

Dragon's Dogma 2 is a sequel to Capcom's 2012 cult action-RPG of the same name. The story follows the trials of the Arisen, a once ordinary mortal who has had their heart plucked out by the ancient Great Dragon. Now cursed with forced immortality and the ability to command unique humanoids called Pawns, the Arisen sets out on a journey to slay the Great Dragon before it can lay waste to the world at large.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is an enigma of an action-RPG with a myriad of complex and esoteric systems that are hard to grasp at first but once understood, can provide one of the most engrossing and fun Capcom has ever produced.

The game features an incredibly in-depth combat system with lots of character classes and move-sets to learn, a wide open-world brimming with beautiful locales and dungeons packed with ancient treasure, jaw-dropping action set-pieces, and more.

Helldivers 2

One of the biggest surprise sleeper hits so far in 2024 is Helldivers 2 , a co-op third-person shooter where you play as soldiers of Super Earth called Helldivers. Your mission is to sail the galaxy with your fellow Helldivers and destroy alien-invading bugs and robots with extreme firepower in the name of 'Democracy'.

Helldivers 2 became the best-selling game of February 2024 and is still popular today for many good reasons. This game is a fantastic co-op shooter with solid gunplay, exciting and chaotic unscripted emergent set-pieces, a tongue-in-cheek setting inspired by the classic movie Starstrip Troopers, there are tons of fun weapons to wield and shoot with, and the premium currency to buy cosmetics can all be earned in-game without paying real money.

The only major flaw of this game is its ongoing server issues preventing people from queuing up for games. Aside from that, Helldivers is a blast to play with your friends if you're a fan of co-op shooters.

Palworld is a new survival-crafting game by Pocketpair that is currently exploding with popularity across the internet, achieving over one million concurrent players on Steam and sales figures of one million copies in just a few days after it was released on January 19, 2024.

Palworld isn't just your run-of-the-mill survival game as it combines aspects of the genre with that of monster-tamer games like Nintendo's Pokémon franchise. The goal of the game is to explore a mysterious island, capture cute animals called "Pals", and then use their abilities and strength to help you survive.

These Pals can fight alongside you in battle, help you build bases to defend yourself against the elements and enemies and gather resources to assist you in crafting weapons and armor. This game can be played alone with other players as this game supports online cooperative multiplayer.

Best PC MMOs & RPGs

Massively multiplayer online (MMO) and role-playing games (RPG) don't always go hand-in-hand but they can be awfully similar as both tend to be based on tabletop mechanics from games like Dungeons & Dragons.

These are typically the kinds of games that allow you to play as a specific character and make choices for that character while working to level them up and make them stronger. RPGs can be either turn-based or offer real-time combat. Meanwhile, MMOs allow players to experience events and missions alongside millions of others on the internet. There are several MMO and RPG PC games that have made a big impact over the years.

Baldur's Gate 3

Few games are as complex and intricate as Baldur's Gate 3 while still being extremely satisfying to play. Taking place in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, you choose what race, subrace, and class you want to play as, which opens unique possibilities for you as you engage with various moments and characters. In any given situation, you'll be given choices to select from, but must roll dice to see if your desired action is successful. This adds an element of luck to the game's strategic base and can make it so very unexpected things occur. Of course, you can always take part in the common practice of save scumming by reloading the game again if you don't like the outcome.

The story starts with you being captured on a Mind flayer ship. A creepy worm gets put in your eye that should eventually take control of you and turn you into a Mind flayer yourself. However, you escape the ship and meet up with a cast of memorable characters who also have been infected. Your group's initial intention is learning how to kill the parasite, but strange and unique powers seem to be granted to you by the worm, so you and your companions need to figure out whether you will destroy it or utilize it.

Gameplay-wise, Baldur's Gate 3 offers free-moving exploration but shifts to turn-based combat when a fight is initiated. Characters have different abilities based on their races and classes, but you get to control everyone in your group and determine how they level up. Plus, you can attempt to romance most of your companions and even some NPCs, which can lead to interesting perks and dialogue. That is, of course, if you can get a character's attention.

Each of your decisions carries weight, even the ones you might not think are important, and might lead your character to unlocking rare cutscenes or situations. As such, there is plenty of replay value and experiences can vary drastically from one player to the next. Admittedly, class and leveling up options can be overwhelming, however, despite throwing you into the middle of Dungeons and Dragon's lore and mechanics the game does an excellent job of being approachable to D&D newcomers.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Cyberpunk 2077 when it first launched in 2020 and one of the most infamous launches on home consoles in modern gaming history. It was riddled with game-breaking bugs, glitches, and various gameplay-design decisions that held it back from achieving its true potential. Still, that didn't stop us from enjoying it when we reviewed the PC version many moons ago.

Since that fateful launch, CD Projekt Red has been working night and day implementing various patches and updates to improve the general state of Cyberpunk 2077 and fix all its problems. This series of updates culminated with Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty , a massive expansion that revamps nearly every facet of the base game while adding a new quest line filled with gripping espionage action, and bone-chilling twists to create the definitive version of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's story follows a cyborg mercenary named 'V', who is down on their luck trying to survive in the dystopian metropolis known as Night City. One day, they get a call from a mysterious character named Songbird with a job offer she can't refuse. V must venture into the forbidden district of Night City known as Dogtown, and rescue the President of the New United States of America who recently crash-landed there. If V completes her mission, Songbird will find a way to cure a terminal condition she contracted during Cyberpunk 2077's base game storyline.

In addition to a new storyline, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty adds a plethora of gameplay changes and improvements. The combat system has been enhanced with new abilities and weapons for V to wield in battle, the police system has been reworked so that they will chase after you with armored vehicles which can lead to high-speed chase sequences, perk trees have been revamped with new abilities to offer players more customization options when developing V, a metric ton of bug fixes to preserve the gameplay experience and much more.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft (WoW) first exploded onto the PC gaming scene way back in 2004 and has been a household name ever since. Through the years Blizzard Entertainment has continued to push out huge expansions with new quests and items for players to engage with.

This MMORPG's popularity stems from the fact that players can create their own characters (chosen from a number of different races) and then put hundreds of hours into the game without coming anywhere close to beating it. You can really get lost in the lore or spend time playing with friends online without getting bored.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

Disco Elysium released for PC in 2019 and quickly became a very popular RPG. You take on the role of a gritty detective, but you get to choose if you are willing to take bribes or do other dirty practices while solving murders and crimes.

Many people have lauded the game for the freedom it gives players. You can do just about anything to get the outcomes you seek, giving it more of a true tabletop RPG experience than many other games out there. Will you go for a more straightforward detecting approach or give in to your wild or dangerous side to get what you want?

Persona 5 Royal

The original Persona 5 game released in 2016 and quickly amassed a strong fandom thanks to its interesting take on student life, vigilantism, and the Metaverse.  It wasn't until 2022 that the enhanced version, Persona 5 Royal , finally came to PC.

Players take on the role of a high school student who has just been transferred to a new school after being falsely accused of assault. Here, the youth makes friends with other teens and each of them develops new powers which they use to form a secret group. Gameplay is a mixture of student life sim and dungeon crawling with a phenomenal cast that will suck you into this story.

The life of a high schooler is hard enough, but give teenagers superpowers and things get a whole lot more crazy. You'll need to balance your home life and vigilantism while navigating the Metaverse.

Genshin Impact

Initially derided as a Breath of the Wild clone, Genshin Impact is its own thing; an RPG set in a colorful world and filled with a number of exciting quests for players to experience. It initially launched in 2020 and has since received a number of large updates, enlarging the world and adding new characters.

You play as twin (male or female) who wakes up in another world called Teyvat with no memory of your past. Soon you get wrapped up in the troubles of NPCs nearby and can add party members to your team. Each character has its own unique fighting abilities and elemental powers, but some are far more powerful than others.

The game is free to play, and is usually the case offers several microtransactions with gacha systems for dispensing characters and weapons. However, players do not need to spend any money in order to enjoy this RPG.

Tales of Arise

Tales of Arise is an action RPG with an anime art style. As is usually the case in JRPGs, this one has a very detailed plot. Long ago, the world of Rena conquered and enslaved the people of Dahna, however, the Dahna resistance is strong and seeks to end this oppressive reign. Now a young woman and a young man — each from one of these worlds — must band together to make things better for everyone.

Although a JRPG, this game does not have turn-based attacks but rather employs action-packed combat, that's oh-so-satisfying once you get the hang of it. The world is gorgeous and filled with helpful items that will make it easier to take down enemies and monsters.

Stardew Valley

Step aside Animal Crossing! Stardew Valley is a far more complex and fleshed out farming simulation game that also provides RPG elements. The game first released in 2016 and has managed to sell over 20 million copies — An impressive feat given that it was designed in entirety by Eric Barone under the alias of ConcernedApe.

Players inherit their grandfather's farm and must work to get it back to good condition. You can raise livestock, tend crops, cook, go fishing, mine, and much more. In addition to your farming duties, you can interact with the NPCs in town and can marry one of 12 characters regardless of gender.

Stardew Valley for PC can be purchased on its own via Steam or it can be accessed via Microsoft's PC Game Pass.

Best PC action-adventure games

There's a fine line between action-adventure games and RPGs. To be honest, some games are a bit of both. At any rate, these tend to be single-player experiences that allow a lot of open-world freedom, real-time combat, and exploration. The emphasis on a complex story is also key.

Some of the very best action-adventure games in recent years are ports from consoles. However, action-adventure games have a long and storied history on PC as well. Check out the best PC action-adventure games and make sure you've played them all.

Elden Ring took the world by storm in early 2022 with its massive open world, challenging battles, and impressive art direction. The lore for the game was created by George R. R. Martin, best known as the writer of A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted into Game of Thrones. There's a deepness to the characters and world that many games can only hope to aspire to.

Players take on the role of a minor character known as one of the Tarnished who is given the goal of repairing the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord. However, the fantasy land the game takes place on is ruled over by demigods and powerful monsters who you will have to face along the way. However, if you die you'll lose many of your best items so you need to be careful.

What makes Elden Ring stand out from Hidetaka Miyazaki's other souls-like games created by FromSoftware is that it allows far more freedom and exploration. Generally, if players come across a particularly challenging enemy, they can choose to go a different direction rather than being forced to defeat it before they can move on. Plus, there are many ways to grow stronger so you can come back and take an enemy on when you're more prepared. Not to mention, some of the locations are awe-inspiring and will have you admiring them for a long time.

As one of the Tarnished, it's your goal to explore the realms and unite the pieces of the Elden Ring so you can become the Elden Lord. There are monsters and demigods in your way and they won't go down easily.

God of War released exclusively for PS4 in 2018 to great acclaim but has since made its way to PC where it has likewise received overwhelmingly positive praise.

Though the story centers around Kratos (the Spartan God of War from ancient Greece) raising his son, Atreus, it's also the tale of Kratos growing up. The original God of War series from several years ago is almost laughable now due to how unnecessarily violent and heartless Kratos was depicted within them. He destroyed all of the Olympian gods and anyone else that got mildly in his way while seeking vengeance on his family. But now, a more mature Kratos looks back ashamedly on his past and doesn't want his son to be anything like what he once was.

Having moved on from the land of the Olympians, Kratos and Atreus live in the land of the Norse Gods who aren't so happy about the god of war's existence in their realms. Kratos' second wife and Atreus' mother, Faye, has died and so the father and son go on a quest to spread her ashes on the tallest mountain, just as she asked them to do. But Atreus doesn't know Kratos is a god and there are plenty of things to discover about this land and Odin, the god that rules it.

Battles can be challenging but the mechanics are so satisfying and give players such good control that it feels amazing to play. You'll learn about Norse mythology and get to experience some truly fantastic scenes along the way.

The titular God of War, Kratos, must take his son to the top of the highest mountain to spread his wife's ashes. But the local Norse gods aren't happy to see the Spartan here. He'll need to fight them off to keep his son safe.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Few games have been released as many times as Grand Theft Auto 5 , but that just speaks to the game's popularity over the last decade. This open-world third-person shooter originally released in 2013 and follows some men living in the fictional California city of Los Santos — a place loosely based on Los Angeles.

When Michael Townley destroys a mansion after learning his wife is cheating on him, the drug lord who owns it demands to be paid. With no way of affording it, Michael returns to his former life of crime, joined by a young gangster named Franklin Clinton. Together they do whatever is necessary to get the money they need.

What follows is a sandbox action RPG where players can do just about whatever they want to. It's this freedom, along with the engaging story and interesting characters, that has continued to make this such a popular game over the years.

This open-world sandbox game gives players the freedom to do just about anything. Steal cars, evade the police, rob notable businesses, and more all on your path to paying off a drug lord.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition

The Witcher became a household name once the Netflix series starring Henry Cavill launched to insane popularity. But before the show, there was a video game series based on the books written by Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The most famous of these games is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which originally released in 2015 but has since gotten a Complete Edition with a graphics overhaul and all previous DLC to date.

The game follows Geralt of Rivia, a witcher who is skilled in magic and the blade. He's a very adept monster dispatcher, however, his skills are put to the test when he learns that a horde of specters known as the Wild Hunt are after his adopted daughter, Ciri. Now he must traverse the land, defeat monsters, solve mysteries, and speak to past lovers in order to protect his daughter.

This open-world adventure is the culmination of the series, filled with characters that you care deeply for. Combat is satisfying and you basically unravel fairy tales as you complete side quests. Plus, this is the game where the Geralt in the bathtub meme comes from, so you have to play it.

Play as Geralt of Rivia, the titular witcher who uses his magic and sword skills to defeat monsters. He's got a sharp wit and uses it to unravel mysteries and outsmart foes. He'll need to use all of his faculties to protect his adopted daughter who's being hunted by specters.  View Deal

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

The original The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released in 2011 and quickly became a best-selling phenomenon that most games can only hope for. It's no wonder given the unheard-of amount of freedom the original game offered at the time. Since then, the title has been released on every major platform and has seen several new versions. The one I recommend playing is the Special Edition, which comes with all previous add-ons, remastered graphics, and new features as well.

Players take on the role of a fighter who was saved from execution when the great dragon Aldiun attacked the imperial troops escorting him. Shortly thereafter, the soul of a dead dragon finds its way into the player making them "Dragonborn", with unique powers. Now the player can do anything they wish. Travel around the land, get involved in local political battles, talk to the NPCs, take on sidequests, or develop your "Dragonborn" abilities to become even stronger.

Explore a large fantasy world filled with dragons, monsters, magic, and dungeons. You can go anywhere, do anything. Just make sure you don't grab too many things or you'll be going as slow as an ox.

Best PC shooters

First-person shooters (FPS) have been a PC staple for decades and many argue vehemently that you get far better control playing these games with keyboard and mouse than you do with controller. Some of the best PC shooters are multiplayer games while others are plot-focused single-players that tend to have a sci-fi bent.

Get ready for a whole lot of Valve highlights as we talk about the most influential and compelling FPS PC games of all time. It's really thanks to these classics that FPS games are what they are today.

Half-Life / Black Mesa

Few FPS games can claim to be as influential as Valve's Half-Life series. The original Half-Life game released back in 1998 and was one of the very first FPS games to include a hefty narrative. It's no wonder it inspired a series of games that are still revered on PC today.

Players take control of Gordon Freeman (though he never talks and is never referred to by that name in the game) a scientist at the Black Mesa Research Facility. An experiment gone wrong opens up a portal that allows hostile aliens to come through. Now it's up to Freeman to close the portal and kill all alien threats.

The game is so well-loved that a developer group known as Crowbar Collective was able to remake the original game and even flesh out some parts. In what is a unique situation within the gaming world, Valve even sanctioned it and hosts the reimagined remake on the Steam store. Both the original Half-Life and the Black Mesa remake are worth checking out.

This Valve-sanctioned remake took 14 years to create and was made by fans of Half-Life. It manages to retell the original story faithfully while also adding new missions and fleshing out the ending in a way all Half-Life fans can appreciate.  View Deal

If you want to play the original Half-Life, it's also on Steam. An anti-mass spectrometer explodes in the Black Mesa Research Facility and opens a portal. Now vicious aliens are coming to Earth and it's up to Gordon Freeman to fight them off and shut the portal down.  View Deal

Half-Life 2

Initially released in 2004, this sequel was built upon the foundations of the original sci-fi thriller. At the time it also displayed cutting-edge graphics and some of the smoothest game mechanics ever employed up to that point.

The story follows Gordon Freeman who is awoken out of stasis 20 years after the first game. The portal that Black Mesa scientists uncovered in the first game allowed invading aliens known as the Combine to quickly conquer Earth. Now Freeman joins a resistance group of former Black Mesa workers and must use any weapon at his disposal (including his trusty crowbar) to fend off aliens who have taken over the planet.

We're not done with Valve yet as there are two more highly influential FPS games from the Half-Life universe still to go — the first of which is Portal. This well-known game first released in 2007 and takes place in Aperture Laboratories. Here the sadistic and hilariously sarcastic GLaDOS AI computer system runs tests within a run-down compound where she previously killed all of the scientists who worked here.

Players control a silent woman named Chell who is tasked with completing GLaDOS' stated tasks like a lab rat. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the AI actually wants to kill you and will make fun of you at every given opportunity. Instead of being annoying, GLaDOS is absolutely hilarious. To complete each level, players must use the portal gun in order to maneuver through an area or alter the location of objects within that space according to GLaDOS' demands. What ensues is an innovative puzzle game that pushes the boundaries of what gaming was known for while providing a million laughs.

Although it could be argued that this is more of a puzzle-platformer game than an FPS, the main game mechanic involves shooting a portal gun in first-person and in all other ways very much belongs in the Half-Life universe.

Bioshock Remastered

Best PC multiplayer games

There are so many multiplayer PC games that have come out over the last few decades and they come in so many genres too. Seriously, there's something for everyone whether you're looking for a cooperative session where you work together with your friends or you'd prefer to play competitively against other players.

Innersloth's sci-fi take on the traditional Mafia or Werewolf social deduction party games didn't start out as a rousing success. One or some of the crewmates on a broken spaceship are imposters that are out to kill the crew and sabotage the ship. As bodies are found, crewmates can call a meeting and vote on who they think the imposter is. If enough votes are cast, the person voted on gets launched out of the airlock. If it was the imposter, the crew wins. However, if it was an innocent person the game continues. If the imposter manages to kill everyone, they win.

Rocket League

Originally released in the summer of 2015 for PC and PS4, Rocket League exploded in popularity thanks to the many skilled players that showed off gameplay online and brought others to the game. It takes the world's most popular sport and adds souped-up cars to the mix, just like Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars which predates it. Rocket League has since released on every major console and mobile. Since 2020, Psyonix's hit sports game has been free-to-play adding to its popularity.

Players are placed on a team against others online and must work to score goals by launching a massive soccer ball around the field. Rockets on the cars allow them to quickly speed up and the vehicles can also jump to reach the soccer ball easier. Since matches aren't very long, it's easy to drop in for a few rounds without getting too sucked in and leave when you need to.

Each season there are competitions to see who the best players are along with new car accessories and skins. These regular updates help keep the game fun and worth coming back to.

Play soccer, demolition derby style. You're placed on a team and must work to score goals against your opponents by hitting the ball around with your vehicle. There are fun cosmetics to acquire and plenty of competitive matches to play in.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

Team17 has produced myriad PC hits over the years, but some of the most popular games were from the Overcooked! series. But why order up only one silly cuisine game when you can get both in a bundle with Overcooked! All You Can Eat ? It's worth noting that online play has some issues, but local co-op plays beautifully.

Players take on the role of one of many cooks in the kitchen and must serve up customer orders within a time limit. Upon getting acquired by Microsoft, the folks at Rare went on to create Sea of Thieves , an action-adventure pirate game that can be played solo or with friends. Players start out with very little but can work to acquire loot, better equipment, and more as time goes on. One of the things that makes it so fun is that you can play with friends as a crew and do whatever you want.

There is a vast map to explore, treasure to uncover, supernatural enemies to fight, and much more. Work together with your friends to amass wealth or a reputation as the most feared pirates on the seas. Since it supports cross-platform between Xbox and PC you can play with more friends, but each player needs their own copy of the game. Best PC horror games

Horror has a long history with computer games with some of the earliest titles gravitating to this genre. The original Five Nights at Freddy's is an undisputed classic that started it all. However, if you're looking to raise the steaks to true horror then it's undeniable that the sequel increases the adrenaline rush. It does this by removing a protective feature that was so intrinsic to the original.

Players once more take on the role of a security guard holed up in a monitoring station at a Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The animal animatronics that delight children by day are still killers at night and you must keep an eye on them as they wander through various rooms and hope to survive through five days at work.

The thing is, the protective doors that kept you safe in the first game are gone, leaving you more exposed to the creeping robots. The only way to deter them from killing you is to wear an animal mask when they enter your station. Otherwise, it's game over.

There are few things that make you feel as powerless and vulnerable in a video game like running through dangerous environments without a weapon, but that's exactly what Outlast is all about. Best PC platformer games

Platformers are just what they sound like — games that require players to jump from one platform to another, often in tricky scenarios that make this task a challenge. Typically, there's also some type of combat worked into these maneuvers and players need to defeat enemies or bosses that get in their way.

The beauty about platformers is that their mechanics are often so beautifully simple that they never feel old or outdated. But that doesn't mean these are always easy to play. Some will make you feel like throwing your monitor across the room with how difficult they are. But that's why there's such a big payoff when you make it through them.

Cuphead might employ a fun old-timey art style, but the gameplay is incredibly challenging and might just make you want to throw your controller or keyboard against the wall. It was originally released in 2017 and tells the story of Cuphead and his brother Mugman.

Based on a silly agreement, the brothers owe the Devil their souls, but they strike a deal that they can be free if they bring the Devil the "soul contracts" of various characters. What ensues is boss fight after boss fight with some run and gun sections mingled in between. Many of the battles require players to jump from one safe platform to another to avoid taking damage, which requires a whole lot of focus.

You can play on your own or with a buddy, but you'll want to prepare yourself as this game can be both frustratingly challenging and incredibly satisfying.

Sonic Mania

The original Sonic the Hedgehog games from the Sega Genesis era have always maintained their popularity over the years. With it's pixel-style visuals and challenging levels, Celeste is a very complicated game the requires players to move at just the right times in order to survive. But the game is also somewhat forgiving, like when it allows you to jump for a short space after falling off a ledge. There are a number of different challenges including spikes placed close to the path, strong wind, and strange substances that each make it hard for Madeline to make it to her goal of reaching the top of Celeste Mountain.

Where Celeste really stands out is the personal journey that the protagonist goes through during her physical one. She initially sets out to scale the mountain specifically to help herself regain self-esteem and must battle her own personified personal demons along the way.

Burnout: Paradise Remastered

The original Burnout: Paradise released back in 2008 and was a instant classic thanks to its amazing soundtrack and varied locations. This Remastered version released in 2019 and includes all add-ons from the Year of Paradise along with an all-new district and nine additional vehicles.

While not the most graphically intensive racer anymore, the controls are incredibly fun and the mixture of busy city landscapes mixed with more natural settings gives a lot of variety. It also helps a lot that this game offers some of the most epic car crashes of any game, which is fun on its own.

I could make this list absolutely massive, so I'll just restrain myself to the titles that are still relevant and fun to play today. They cover a wide range of genres, but do all tend to be plot-driven as I'm a sucker for a good story. Check out my picks for the best PC games of all time.

I wasn't sure what to expect when Pentiment showed up on PC Game Pass, but I duly downloaded it and checked it out when it did. It's become one of my favorite games thanks to its clever art style , intriguing story, and the way it tells you all about a character using font. Yes, it's that artsy and creative.

The game takes place in the 16th century and focuses on a time of religious, political, and social upheaval in German history. For reference, this is when Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church and printing presses were changing how information was created and shared.

Players take on the role of Andreas Maler, one of the last illustrators working at Kiersau Abbey in Tassing. A murder is soon committed and it's up to Andreas to get to the bottom of things. However, you only have so many hours in a day and the way you choose to spend your time determines how the story unfolds. Not to mention, the dialogue you choose has consequences. Each character's dialogue shows up in a different handwriting or printing press block style to give you an idea of their background and personalities as soon as you meet them.

I won't say anymore so as not to spoil what is an absolutely masterful adventure, but the game is well worth playing and offers plenty of chances for replay since you cannot see everything in one playthrough. On a silly note, the settings allowed me to make the characters' heads much bigger and I preferred this since it made it easier to read the characters' expressions.

16th century Germany is a time of change and you play as one of the last illustrators at an ancient abbey. When a murder is committed and your friend is accused, it's up to you to determine whodunit.

Star Wars Jedi Outcast

A long long time ago in a galaxy that feels far away LucasArts published the Dark Forces series and the Jedi Knight series which followed smuggler-turned-Jedi Kyle Katarn as he fought followers of the dark side. He's basically Luke Skywalker and Han Solo mixed together, which means he has Jedi smarts and a smart mouth.

I will always strongly contest that this game is better than Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order due to the wider range of Force abilities and weapons available to players, including the ability to throw your lightsaber, deflect lasers, and perform mind tricks on NPCS. Not to mention, the story is far more interesting.

In Jedi Outcast, Katarn's partner, Jan Ors, has been taken and he must once more take up his lightsaber to save her while defeating Imperial forces. Players choose whether to rely on iconic Star Wars firearms (FPS view) or their lightsaber (third-person view) from one battle to the next. Plus, along the way we get to meet Lando Calrissian and Luke Skywalker in natural settings that add to the story.

These days Kyle Katarn is no longer considered Star Wars cannon, which is a shame because his adventures were far more interesting than many of the ones that have come out in the last few years. So if you'd like to experience some pure Star Wars excellence from back when LucasArts was a thing, you have to play this game.

Night in the Woods

It's no secret that I prefer story-driven games with compelling characters. That's why Night in the Woods is one of my all-time favorites. It has a rich setting filled with relatable protagonists that are so sarcastic and macabre that they speak to my soul. The dialogue is absolutely genius and the antics you get up to are so mundanely realistic that they're relatable, like smashing florescent lights with a bat because you're bored.

The game follows Mae, a black cat who returns to her parent's home after dropping out of college for some mysterious reason. Mae moves back to Possum Springs — a failing mining town in the middle of nowhere — and renews her high school friendships. However, Mae has a troubled and widely known past that she has trouble escaping. Not to mention, some malevolent forces seem to be at work in this town, but no one seems to believe Mae about it.

This game perfectly captures the emotional and social challenges that 20-somethings face as they come into adulthood. Nothing is the same as it was before and Mae must navigate her social life while unraveling a dark mystery. You'll laugh, feel emotional, and sense a kinship with these characters. I don't want to ruin anything by saying more, so you really ought to go play it yourself.

Hogwarts Legacy

As I said in my Hogwarts Legacy review , "this is a truly special game. It's obvious that Hogwarts Legacy was made by passionate Harry Potter fans for passionate Harry Potter fans." This game captures every part of the magic that I always wanted to experience from this fantastical world and fulfills your wizarding or witching wishes.

Players take on the role of a fifth-year transfer student who has a unique power to see and use ancient magic. They must use this ability to unlock the mystery behind an ancient group of magic wielders and learn about the secret they safeguarded. Of course, along the way, you'll go to classes, learn spells, fight evil wizards, make friendships, ride magical creatures, and go flying on brooms. It's a very fun experience.

Enjoy exploring the wizarding world from your computer as you take on the role of a Hogwarts student. Your unique magical powers enable you to address problems and enemies like no one else can.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition

Horizon Zero Dawn initially released exclusively for PS4 in 2017 and then finally came to PC in 2020. I can't say enough good things about this game. It has one of the best plots I've ever experienced in gaming and the protagonist, Aloy, really helped me in a time when I was struggling .

Aloy lives on Earth in 3020 with many of the iconic buildings of our time visible as ancient ruins. Powerful machines rule the land and make it dangerous for humans to exist. But ever adaptive, humans have learned to hunt these robots in order to gain equipment and armor. That is, until a new blight is making the machines more vicious than ever.

Our red-haired heroine is born an outcast since she is "motherless" in a matriarchal society. She must prove herself to those who disapprove of her and take on massive machines that threaten mankind while unraveling the mystery of what became of the ancient ones who are long gone.

There's something absolutely rewarding about taking down rampaging robots using nothing but a bow and arrow mingled with traps. Gameplay is smooth and combat is very rewarding. Plus, watching characters interact with iconic buildings and landmarks from our time without knowing what they were actually used for offers a delicious sense of dramatic irony. As the story unfolds, you'll find yourself getting further and further sucked into the adventure.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition | $49.99 at GreenManGaming (Steam)

In 3020, the world as we know it has been conquered by vicious machines and it's hard for humanity to survive. Aloy must carve a path for herself and defeat these robots to unravel the mystery of the ancient ones.

Beacon Pines

Beacon Pines is yet another amazing game that I experienced via PC Game Pass. This beautifully hand-drawn story follows a little deer boy named Luka VanHorn who lives in Beacon Pines with his grandmother. The story comes from a book that is influenced depending on the words that the player uses to finish certain sentences. More words get unlocked as the game progresses, giving past scenes replay value.

I was initially drawn to this game because of its cute characters and vibrant setting. But what really made me stay was the amount of unexpected danger and sci-fi elements that get revealed along the way. Putting the wrong word in a sentence easily leads to a character's death, so you want to keep exploring, uncovering new words, and then revisiting parts of the story to get different outcomes.

It's a fantastic tale that I got sucked into and couldn't wait to unravel. As I said, it's on PC Game Pass or you can play it by purchasing it on its own. Either way, you shouldn't skip out on this awesome game.

Influence the outcomes of this story by placing different words in the sentences of a book. Luka VanHorn and his friends are unraveling a creepy sci-fi mystery in their hometown and the wrong words will lead to their death.

This 2011 follow-up to the smash-hit original Portal game followed the puzzle-platformer format , but added new elements including tractor beams, light bridges, and lasers. Teachers have even reported using the game to help their students learn physics at school, too.

Released in 2004 to continue the success of its predecessor, Half-Life 2 puts fans back into the mind of Gordon Freeman once again . You’re joined by Alyx Vance as you fight through the campaign to help the Combine for the sake of freeing the human race.

The game’s reception has remained positive throughout the years, earning a total of 39 Game of the Year awards with additional nominations for things like stellar voice acting and sound effects.

When a game is referenced in the 2008 Guinness Book of World Records as the Best-Selling FPS title, you know its got to be good.

Will Wright had a hit with Sim City , so he took a magnifying glass to it and let you play dolls with the citizens, too. Throughout the years since its release, The Sims has taken on a life of its own, eclipsing Sim City and going on to spawn several sequels , spin-offs, and add-ons.

The game is fun and easy enough to bring casual gamers in , promising friendships, romances, careers, and home-ownership. It was even inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame in Rochester, NY in 2016.

Later entries in the series have received mixed reviews after EA bought out Maxis and made the most recent entry, The Sims 4, free to play on PC (with the heavy expectation you'll likely end up buying some of its DLC).

You go through most of Disco Elysium as a cop with amnesia, trying to solve a murder case through dialogue with citizens of a city destroyed by war. Though the game was already great on its initial 2019 release, it was enhanced significantly and re-released with a free update in 2021.

Written and designed by Estonian novelist Robert Kurvitz, the independent developer ZA/UM didn’t know what a hit he had until the Game of the Year awards began to pour in, and an Amazon television series adaptation was announced for the game as well.

Age of Mythology: Retold will combine the best elements of the beloved Age of Mythology (2002) with modern real-time strategy design, visuals and gameplay. The newly premiered trailer at Xbox Showcase 2024 revealed the first gameplay footage, showing off exciting action and divine powers, as well as some newly redesigned deity portraits. The World’s Edge team also confirmed the launch date for Age of Mythology: Retold – September 4, 2024 – and that this will be the first title in the Age of Empires franchise to ship on both PC and console at launch.

It’s official: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 , the latest addition to the popular Call of Duty franchise, is set to arrive on October 25. Developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller where nothing is as what it seems. In this mind-bending narrative set in the early 1990s, a shadowy force has infiltrated the U.S. government and players will be forced to go rogue for the first time.

Playground Games Asks ‘What Does It Mean to be a Hero?’ in the Next Installment of its Fable Trailer Series

What does it mean to be a hero? In last year’s trailer, that question was answered by Dave, a gardener-turned-giant with a chip on his shoulder. This year, we get a much darker take from Humphry, played by the British comedy actor Matt King. Humphry was once Albion’s greatest Hero, but those glory days are long gone. In Fable , Humphry will be forced out of retirement when a mysterious figure from his past threatens the very existence of Albion.

E-Day Marks a New Dawn for Gears of War

Gears of War: E-Day is the next mainline game in the Gears of War universe, set during the pivotal Emergence Day. Fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to face a new nightmare: the Locust Horde. These subterranean monsters, grotesque and relentless, erupt from below, laying siege on humanity itself.

In the announce trailer for the series’ next major installment, The Coalition has teamed up with Blur Studio to forge a visually stunning trailer using in-game assets in Unreal Engine 5. It features a new instrumental version of ‘Mad World,’ originally performed by Gary Jules for the iconic 2006 commercial, now brilliantly reimagined by the game’s composer Adam Lastiwka. The trailer made its debut in 4K resolution and 30 FPS with 5.1 stereo sound. These specs, optimized for streaming, do not represent the final game’s performance.

South of Midnight Shows Off First Gameplay – and the Monstrous Two-Toed Tom

Today at Xbox Games Showcase, Undead Labs revealed a new trailer for State of Decay 3 , giving us a closer look at the ambitious open world zombie survival game. This follow-up to fan-favorite State of Decay 2 represents a huge leap forward for the series and the studio.

In State of Decay 3 , the game’s world is now years into the apocalypse, with an evolving zombie threat taking over the landscape. Monster Hunter Wilds Could Run Away With a Definitive Dragon's Dogma Mechanic

The initial rush of excitement from Dragon's Dogma 2 ’s launch has died down, but the game shouldn't be counted out yet. Capcom has stumbled onto something special with the Dragon's Dogma franchise, combining a slew of action game combat options with an in-depth medieval fantasy adventure simulator. Players have already produced plenty of organic stories to share thanks to Dragon's Dogma 2 ’s impressive reactivity and mechanical depth, and more are sure to follow whenever its likely expansion, equivalent to Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen , arrives.

It's too early to call for sure what the later updates for Dragon's Dogma 2 will be, including whether it will lean towards free or paid offerings. Things like a higher frame rate or a challenge dungeon like Dark Arisen 's Bitterblack Isle would be great, as would adding more quests and monsters to the world alongside new Vocations to every DD2 player’s arsenal . After that, the sky's the limit, and Capcom is no stranger to giving its biggest titles long post-launch tails. In fact, the usual recipient of this support could very easily help Dragon's Dogma 2 by sharing some of its abundant content.

Similarities between Capcom's Monster Hunter and Dragon's Dogma series make a strong case for including one key DD mechanic in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Dragon's Dogma And Monster Hunter Seem Made For Each Other

In many ways, Dragon's Dogma is the younger sibling of the Monster Hunter franchise. Both see players, usually accompanied by teammates, venturing through fantasy worlds to slay monsters either ripped from mythology or with mythological significance attributed to them. Along the way, they'll have to pick up gear and other items and improve their skills with various specialized play styles. Even Dragon's Dogma 's setting of a continuous open world will be lessened soon, as Monster Hunter Wilds will introduce a pseudo-open world map of its own.

Monster Hunter Should Cross Over With Dragon’s Dogma 2

Other similarities include targeting monster weak points, the importance of field hunting, and a number of techniques shared between certain weapon classes like Great Sword and Dual Blades, which all just demonstrate how interchangeable these franchises can get. The logical conclusion for this would be Monster Hunter and Dragon's Dogma sharing content outright , which, given each franchise's modern popularity, could be a smash hit. Whether it is simply a free update like the many crossovers Monster Hunter enjoys or part of some sort of paid season pass or expansion, Dragon's Dogma 2 should get crossover DLC with Monster Hunter .

How Dragon’s Dogma 2 Could Feature Monster Hunter Content

Thanks to the amount of overlap between each series, it isn't hard to imagine some non-canon Dragon's Dogma 2 DLC where the Arisen ends up fighting an iconic beast from Monster Hunter . A Rathalos would make for the most obvious addition, especially since it already resembled a heavily remixed version of Dragon’s Dogma ’s own Drakes . Other popular Monster Hunter creatures could join in as well, and despite needing to mesh with an even more realistic art style, the more unrealistic Elder Dragons wouldn't need to give up anything to fit in. Kirin and Khezu would work just as well as Tigrex or Diablos, and the more that can join, the better.

A Monster Hunter Crossover In Dragon’s Dogma 2 Should Be Thorough

With some kind of rare monster hunter NPC leading the associated quests, Dragon’s Dogma players could even join in on carving monsters to eventually earn rewards just like in Monster Hunter proper. A number of the more out-there Monster Hunter equipment designs would have to be toned down to not stick out in Dragon's Dogma 2 , but they should still provide distinct rewards that also carry various bonuses recalling those from their home series. Dragon's Dogma 2 's Pawn system could advertise this crossover across different players’ worlds, and a Monster Hunter Wilds event might eventually use Dragon’s Dogma content as well. No matter how it shakes out, seeing Dragon's Dogma 2 tackle Capcom's most prestigious legendary beasts would be a delight.

Potentially exciting gems are sure to be lost in the deluge of new things to play unless you sort through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we've gathered the  best PC games  you can play right now and a running list of the  2024 games  that are launching this year. 

Troma Presents Poultrygeist

Troma is a cult film company specialising in schlocky comedy horror, and Poultrygeist (the game) is a sequel of sorts to the 2006 film Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. As you have probably gathered by now, the satire here is far from sophisticated. In fact, it's dumb as shit! That's the Troma way. This sequel-as-game is a visual novel about "the murder of a chicken and destruction of a lawn mower that teeters the city closer to a riot and an even more powerful looming magical threat." Notwithstanding any aversion to the visual novel as a genre, I cannot imagine why fans of narrative-driven computer adventures would not want to see how this one plays out. Or else, wait for the forthcoming Toxic Crusaders beat 'em up .

SunnySide takes the core rhythms of cosy life games and drapes it in anime cloth. Set in a quiet town in the Japanese countryside, there's the obligatory farming, resource gathering, homemaking and socialising (yes, there's romance). Some aspects of your routine can eventually be automated, chiefly gardening: it may come as a relief to hear that watering systems exist in the SunnySide universe. Indeed, offering a modern spin on these chore aspects of life games is part of SunnySide's sales pitch, with the Steam page warning that "SunnySide is a Farm Sim with no watering cans, shipping containers, gift based socializing, mayonnaise machines, or endless walking". It also places a greater emphasis on a slowly unfolding narrative concerning the citizens of the town.

Steam‌ ‌page‌  ‌ Release:‌ June 14 Developers:‌ Liquid Meow Here's another one of those pastel-hued local multiplayer games that have become very popular in the wake of Overcooked. This one has a premise that appeals to me: one team plays as pets, the other as humans. The pets' objective is to destroy the world, chiefly because their human owners aren't giving them enough attention, while the human team needs to put a stop to their pets' nefarious ways. There are various game modes, lots of pets to unlock, and the levels take place in varied locales such as home, the beach, the office, and a castle. Watching cats destroy things (that don't belong to me) never gets old.

Psychroma is a neon-hued psychological horror sidescroller with some of the most meticulously detailed pixel art I've seen in a while. Set in a "haunted cybernetic house" somewhere in an unrecognisable future Toronto, you take the role of a drifter who has the peculiar skill of being able to experience time out of order. This strange house is a refuge of sorts for people rendered homeless by a ruthless housing crisis, and part of the appeal of Psychroma is the ability to absorb other inhabitants' "digital ghosts" to access their stories. This looks like a richly atmospheric experience, and there's a demo if you'd like to try it out first.

The Powder Toy

The Powder Toy has been around since 2008, but last week marks its first appearance on Steam. It's basically a particle physics sandbox with a huge emphasis on user-generated content, and with it you can simulate explosions, construct "miniaturized" power plants, and even build your own CPUs. Those are just the examples taken from Steam; the possibilities are limited only by your own curiosity. It's a weirdly powerful simulator, and a real labour of love, especially since it's completely free to download.
