Things to do in Perm: 13 reasons I loved Perm

Perm architecture

I really, really liked Perm. If you’re looking for reasons to visit Perm – or maybe even for things to do in Perm, then look no further. I visited on my Trans-Siberian journey and was so happy I did. Let me try and convince you why!

I’m going to say it again: I really, really liked Perm . The city was somewhere I’d always been curious about – mostly because I wanted to visit Perm-36 , the only former Soviet detention camp that has been preserved and is open to the public. But the more I read about the city, the more I was convinced I would like it ( despite its less-than-stellar reputation throughout the rest of Russia ), but even I have to say I’m surprised by how much I liked the city. In fact, Perm was easily my favourite city I visited on the Trans-Siberian.

Perm was easily my favourite city on the Trans-Siberian.

Here’s a few reasons why Perm left such a positive impression on me.

Check out my full Trans-Siberian itinerary here .

13 reasons I loved Perm

The last city in europe.

Where is Perm? Map

Perm is the last city in Europe, travelling east

Perm has the right to officially call itself the last city in Europe , thanks to its location just to the West of the Ural mountains. Traditionally, Perm was the last big stop that traders would make before heading into Siberia via the Kama River and traversing Siberia’s extensive river network.

But for me, travelling from East to West, Perm was the first city in Europe I reached and it 100% felt like it. The architecture in the core city centre has a strong Tsarist, imperialist feel. Streets of beautiful, old, pastel-coloured brick buildings from the turn of the century felt a world away from Siberia’s mixture of Soviet blocks and traditional wooden architecture.

The best food on my trip

Where to eat in Perm: Ris Lapsha

Hands down, the best food I ate on my entire three-week trip was in Perm . If you’re looking for the best places to eat in Perm, head straight for Ris-Lapsha ( Rice and noodles ), a really cool Asian restaurant that does fantastic dishes. Quite similar to Wagamama’s in the UK (if you know it) in terms of offering, but a hundred times nicer. It was recommended to me several times by local Permians as one of the best restaurants in Perm , so you know it has to be good. It’s a small chain, but the most central restaurant is on Permskaya Ulitsa (number 11) , but not marked on Google Maps.

Another great restaurant worth checking out is Toropomodoro , found in a small courtyard just off Ul. Lenina. The interior is a very intimate ( read: small ) exposed-brick set up, with just a handful of tables. The menu is surprisingly long and the pizzas are amazing . Also recommended to me by a local, this is another great choice if you’re looking for the best food in Perm.

The Perm Stefanov Holy Trinity Monastery

Sights of Perm: Stefanov Monastery

One of the most beautiful monasteries I came across during my trip was the Perm Stefanov Holy Trinity Monastery, found in the Motovilikha suburb. Our visit here was fleeting, but the monastery is just as beautiful inside as out. Located a bit further out from the centre of Perm, the monastery is nevertheless well-worth a short taxi ride to explore.

Dr. Zhivago

Perm Architecture - Dr. Zhivago

Gribushin House

If you’re a fan of Russian literature, you might also be familiar with Perm for its connection to the novel Dr. Zhivago . I haven’t read it personally, but the author, Boris Pasternak, set the novel in a town based on Perm; on the city’s tourist trail, you can visit several buildings that were the inspiration for locations in the novel. House Gribushin is a great example.

Natural beauty of Perm Krai

Perm Krai road

En route to Perm-36 – less than an hour outside of Perm

The city of Perm is found in the Perm Krai (the Perm region), which is roughly two-thirds the size of the UK, with a population of less than three million. We drove through just a tiny portion of the area to reach Perm-36, but even on this short drive, I was taken by just how beautiful and green Perm Krai is . As I mentioned in my blog post about Ulan-Ude , I didn’t manage to take as many day trips out of cities and I wanted, but it looks like there are a lot of possibilities to get out and see more of Perm Krai, if you have the time. Tour companies like Evrasia Tours have some amazing options if you are looking for day trips from Perm. I would have loved to explore more and maybe done some hiking in the north of the region.

Perm architecture

Perm Architecture - Riverside Mansion

One of the beautiful riverside mansions in Perm

Perm is genuinely a really pretty city in my opinion: walking around and appreciating some of the city’s architecture is one of the nicest things to do in Perm. The main streets in the city centre have some beautiful buildings, typical of the more European-style from the Russian empire. (Of course there are plenty of Soviet high-rises, too.) If you follow the green tourist trail, you’ll be led around some of the city’s nicest buildings, but those along ul. Lenina are particularly picturesque. The old train station (Perm I) and the mansions along the river are other standouts.

PERMM – The Museum of Modern Art

Things to do in Perm: PERMM Modern Art

Getting interactive at PERMM

Chances are, if you’re thinking of visiting Perm, you’ll have already read about PERMM , an art gallery which Lonely Planet touts as one of the few subversive spaces in Russia. I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of art (modern or classical), but I would say that this impressive space is probably worth checking out. The exhibition when I visited was fairly out-there , but still something that I could enjoy . And while the museum is probably a lot less controversial than it might have been (PERMM’s founder and curator was removed in 2013 for poking fun at the Sochi Winter Olympics), it’s still a very cool, independent museum of art and one of the best things to do in Perm.

Street art in Perm

On my way to my amazing meal at Ris-Lapsha (see above), I stumbled upon a really cool area that was full of street art, which isn’t the most common sight in Russia. I’m not sure if this was a designated graffiti zone or something, but the art looked VERY professional ( and very instagrammable ). The area was the short, pedestrianised stretch of ul. Permskaya, roughly from number 55-67.

Kölsch Bar in Russia

Cologne meets Perm

Now one of the weirdest moments of my trip – or quite possibly my life – was when I happened to glance up from my phone on the tram, just as we travelled past a Kölsch bar. Now, for those of you who don’t know, Kölsch is a special type of beer native to the city of Cologne (where I live). I had genuinely no idea this bar existed and found it by pure chance.

I went back later to find that not only was the bar dedicated to the beer, but all things Cologne. The inside was decked out in red and white (the city colours), there were prints of Cologne cathedral on the walls and emblems for the local football team FC Köln everywhere. I was in heaven. A home away from home.

‘Happiness is not behind the mountains’

Perm sign

“Happiness is not far away”: the new symbol of Perm

Everybody loves a good local landmark. Even better when that landmark can easily and frequently be instagrammed. Luckily, Perm has just that; a sign on the banks of the Kama river, which means ‘ Happiness is not far away ,’ (but more literally translates to: ‘ Happiness is not behind the mountains’ ) has become the new landmark of the city. The sign is pretty popular for Instagrammers, particularly when the river floods and the letters appear to be floating on the surface of the water. I don’t mind saying I grew very fond of this landmark and must have revisited at least three times to take about one million photos .

Perm was historically the last stop before crossing the Ural mountains into Siberia, the saying has a lot of relevance here. (It also doesn’t hurt that Perm’s rival, Yekaterinburg, is found on the other side of those mountains.)

The friendly bear

Sights of Perm: friendly walking bear

It’s good luck to rub the nose of the Perm bear.

However, the official symbol of the city is actually quite different – it’s a friendly walking bear and is found on the city’s crest. (Big emphasis on the ‘ friendly’ – the bear isn’t a show of strength or aggression but friendship and curiosity.)

Perm magent

The new friendly walking bear: in magnet form

Now one thing that really appealed to me about Perm was the region’s new branding – including a very artistic take on the friendly, walking bear. In fact, it’s fair to say that the Perm Tourism Board where pretty confused when I rocked up asking if I could buy anything with the bear on it. Instead, they gave me a load of stuff for free, including a very nice magnet, a t-shirt and more leaflets than you could shake a stick at. I am a sucker for nice branding .

The Kama Riverfront

Kama River, Perm

Within the city itself, the Kama river is a great place to spend some time when the sun is shining. One thing that really left a last impression on me from this journey was just the sheer size of Russia’s rivers – the Kama is a relatively short river, but it is huge! The promenade which runs along the river is really well kept – I would recommend taking a leisurely stroll if you are looking for things to do in Perm.

Perm-36 GULAG Memorial Complex - Watchtower

The idea of visiting Perm-36 is what put Perm on my Trans-Siberian itinerary. And I’m sure it’s the same for many other visitors passing through: visiting the former GULAG is probably the #1 thing to do in Perm. Perm-36 is the only preserved GULAG in the entire of Russia and today functions as a museum and memorial site that can be visited on a guide tour from the city.

However, it’s fair to say that if you’ve read A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich , Perm-36 will probably feel quite tame. Despite being a forced-labour camp, the political prisoners here were entitled to certain luxuries not permitted elsewhere, allowing for trees and gardens to be grown in the barracks, for example. You can read more about the daily life of prisoners here .

Perm-36 GULAG Memorial Complex - Museum

A cleaner at the Perm railway station did this to a photo of Stalin in frustration of not getting a new uniform. She was sentenced to 10 years’ hard labour. Afterwards, she had restrictions on where she could live and work for a further five years.

Visiting is a fascinating look into the Soviet system of punishment – the on-site museum to the Stalinist purges is fascinating and tragic and shows just how casually the deaths of thousands were authorised by one man and his signature. If you are interested in Soviet history, do not miss the chance to visit.

I seriously had no idea this city was such a gem!

It was such a great place to spend some time in! I expected to like it, but I was still really surprised how much. I would happily re-visit and spend some time exploring the Krai. Would fully recommend it for a weekend.

Nick Mullen

Aparna nancherla, laura ramoso, wanda sykes.

The funny people touring this season are an appealing mix of young comedy newcomers and seasoned veterans. Including live podcast shows and more traditional stand-up, these eight tours are sure to keep you laughing all autumn long.

Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo

Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo's popular "Giggly Squad" podcast is currently on a live tour across the U.S. These thirty-something pals first rose to fame on Bravo reality TV show "Summer House" but have since become names in their own right: DeSorbo as a fashionista and Berner as a stand-up with a newly released Netflix special, "We Ride at Dawn." Millennial and Gen Z women are particularly drawn to their wry, casual conversation style, as the besties chat about pop culture, relationships and trauma. "The Giggly Squad" Tour dates are ongoing through January.

You may know British actor Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent on the hit comedy series "Ted Lasso," a role for which he received two Emmys. Or perhaps you know him as the cocreator of the therapy comedy "Shrinking." Surprise: Goldstein is also a comedian — and apparently quite a charming one. "Nothing is off limits, and while obscenities and foul language are in abundance, there's never a moment where you're left thinking, 'this man is about to get canceled ,'" said a tour review in The Quinnipiac Chronicle . "For a white male comedian, it's oddly refreshing." "The Second Best Night of Your Life" Tour dates are ongoing now through November 2.

Tana Mongeau and Brooke Schofield

YouTubers -cum-influencers Tana Mongeau and Brooke Schofield are BFFs and hosts of "The Cancelled Podcast," a show on which they sit back and discuss the details of their glamorous but messy Los Angeles lives. Mongeau is a bawdy Gen Z cyber-celebrity who started off making "storytime" videos about her misadventures and has since continued the confessional tradition on the pod, which is now on a cross-country live tour. "Cancelled Cross Country" Tour dates are ongoing through October 19.

Best known as the creator and co-host of the comedy podcast "Cum Town" and its successor "The Adam Friedland Show," chill-guy Nick Mullen has been steadily touring for years as a stand-up who finds hilarity in the mundane He is easily recognizable, accoutered with a hat, long hair and mustache. His first stand-up special, "Nick Mullen: The Year of the Dragon," was released last year. "Nick Mullen Live" Tour dates are ongoing through December 5.

Nancherla is a South Asian comic and prolific actress whose distinctive voice you are bound to recognize from roles in "BoJack Horseman," "Inside Amy Schumer" and "Master of None." She has also suffered from ongoing anxiety and depression, mental health struggles which feature prominently both in her stand-up and her memoir, "Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself and Impostor Syndrome." Nancherla "discloses freely and mercilessly," said the Los Angeles Times . "She sees her work as a way to reach in and out, beyond comedy, to readers who might need more than a laugh." There are only two dates left on the "Aparna Nancherla: Back on the Road" Tour — Sept. 26 and 27 — so grab tickets now.

Laura Ramoso is no stranger to "going viral" on TikTok and Instagram. She has 2 million followers on the platforms, whom she regularly regales with impressions of her "hit characters," said BroadwayBaby.com , including 'German Mom,' 'Italian Dad' and 'Girl who just got back from…'" These characters are really just specific types of regular people, but Ramoso skewers them with accuracy and wit. Laura Ramoso's "Sit Up Straight Tour" dates are ongoing through November.

Tom Segura is one of the biggest names in comedy. The laid-back performer is not afraid of toeing the line with edgy jokes and morbid humor, and has multiple Netflix specials under his belt plus two successful podcasts ("Your Mom's House" and "2 Bears, 1 Cave"). "Tom Segura: Come Together" Tour dates are ongoing through March 2025.

Sykes has long split her career between acting and stand-up. She got her start writing on "The Chris Rock Show" in the '90s, and later received Emmy nominations for her roles in the television series "Black-ish" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." She is also one of the most memorable guest stars Larry David ever contended with on "Curb Your Enthusiasm," though "Sykes is the antithesis of the combative and cantankerous character she perfected on 'Curb,'" said Tucson Weekly . Wanda Sykes' "Please & Thank You" Tour dates are ongoing through April 2025.

Is 'Azrael' Streaming? Where To Watch Samara Weaving's Mostly Silent Horror Movie

Samara Weaving 's reputation as a modern-day scream queen continues to grow , with her breakout performance in the hit horror comedy Ready or Not almost instantly making her a star. Ever since, the eyes of the horror world have been glued to her next moves, with her subsequent work in 2020's Babysitter: Killer Queen and later Scream VI further cementing her powerhouse potential.

However, it's 2024's Azrael , a dialogue-lite action horror from Cheap Thrills ' E.L. Katz , that seems to be catching the most attention, with Weaving ready to dust off her ability to run, hide, and fight in a tale focused primarily on those three actions. So, without further ado, and with excitement building for one of the spooky season's first big outings, here's a look at how you can watch Azrael .

Is 'Azrael' Available on Streaming?

As mentioned previously, Azrael is a product of horror streamer Shudder and will make its way to the platform at some point in the future . An exact release date for this is not yet known, and will likely rely on the success or lack thereof of the movie in theaters. Alas, movies such as Late Night with the Devil and the frightening Christmas parody It's a Wonderful Knife started life in theaters and found a home on Shudder soon after, so it is fair to assume that streaming fans might not have to wait too long to catch Azrael at home.

When Was 'Azrael' Released?

You can feast your eyes on Weaving back in horror action officially on Friday, September 27, 2024 . This date also marks the theatrical arrival of two other major titles this month, with Francis Ford Coppola 's controversial Megalopolis and the brand-new DreamWorks animation that has everyone talking, The Wild Robot , making its way to US theater screens.

Is 'Azrael' in Theaters?

Yes! Despite being a product of streamer Shudder, Azrael will be available to watch on the big screen - a fate befitting of a scream queen like Weaving. The movie is to be theatrically released by IFC Films after first making its debut at this year's SXSW festival on March 9.

Find Showtimes For 'Azrael'

For those looking to grab their tickets in time for this exciting new horror, here are a few handy links to help you on your way:

Watch the 'Azrael' Trailer

Released on August 19, the official trailer for Azrael is available to watch above. A tense, fright-fueled teaser, the trailer first showcases the creepy forest landscape that will engulf the titular Azrael's desperate flee. When we first meet our hero, she's strapped to a chair and surrounded by members of a horrifying cult. However, those who know Weaving's scream queens know she isn't one to give up, with the breaking of the chair and a quick escape leading to a stomach-churning game of cat-and-mouse with the consequences consistently fatal . An official synopsis for the movie reads,

"Many years following the apocalypse, a devout cult of mute zealots hunts down Azrael (Samara Weaving), a young woman who escaped her own imprisonment- and she will stop at nothing to ensure her own survival."

Perhaps the most enticing aspect of this heartstopping trailer is Weaving's performance, with the movie's lack of dialogue and regular solitude with its hero an acting task even the very best would struggle to complete . At SXSW 2024, Collider's Perri Nemiroff had the chance to sit down with the team behind Azrael , including Weaving, who shed some light on the challenges faced during this filming :

"I thought the biggest challenge was the obvious one, that no one speaks. So it’s all physical, and how to capture a scene without any dialogue. But that ended up being so wonderful and such a great challenge because, actually, we say so much without saying anything, and that's usually the most important things, you know, said without words." "The weather was the thing I thought was gonna be awful, but wardrobe was good to me. I remember I wore so many layers. I wore like eight layers. My little head would pop out of layers of thermals. On weekends when we’d go hang out, people would be like, ‘Have you shrunken?’ And I'm like, ‘Yeah, no, that's just miles of moleskin padding to keep me warm."

Azrael looks, based on its trailer alone, to be a smart, inviting addition to a strong Halloween lineup for 2024 . A spine-chilling premise, one of horror's most exciting young actresses, and a story full of thrilling potential; Azrael has what appears to be the recipe for a hit. In fact, if early critical reception is to be followed, the movie ticks all of those boxes and more, with Collider's Matt Donato writing in his review :

"Weaving continues to be one of my favorite working genre actors, especially in spaces where she can unleash a patented furiousness specific to her talents. This is her showcase, and a formidable one at that. Katz's ability to add pops of harrowing escapist chills and blood-soaked accents of obscene brutality is not ignored, bringing much-needed injections of energy to Barrett's hushed approach. Azrael is both familiar and unique, blending genre comforts with a risky idea. Luckily, it all works, paying off a relatively massive gamble that benefits from Samara Weaving's star power."

In a world no one speaks a devout female hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness

Things To Do

Inside the mind of nicole byer: chaos, comedy and the road to her l.a. stand-up special, the emmy-nominated television host, comedian and actress will host her stand-up special at the wallis annenberg center for the performing arts in los angeles on oct. 4..

the silent comedy tour

“I didn’t even know there were fires until I lost power,” she laughs. In typical Byer fashion, she turned the chaos into a lighthearted adventure, crashing at various friends’ homes in search of air conditioning for three full days. It wasn’t until later that she realized the fires were the culprit.

It’s this same blend of humor and unpredictability that has endeared her to millennial and Gen-Z audiences alike, and it’s exactly what she’ll be bringing to her upcoming stand-up special at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles on Oct. 4

Best known for her Emmy-nominated hosting on “ Nailed It! “—a baking show where amateur bakers with mediocre skills aim to redeem themselves and in turn, get to win some cash prizes—Byer’s comedy is an extension of her larger-than-life personality. Her stand-up style is bold, unfiltered, and charmingly offbeat, much like the show that catapulted her into the mainstream.

“I like being a little wackadoo, I like to make jokes about things that make me giggle and I get asked a lot in interviews if I laugh at my own jokes and I’m always like ‘yes, you think I left my house after dark to not giggle and have a nice time?’ that’s psychotic,” she said. “I find humor in the most mundane things that happen in my life. Life is ridiculous, and that’s where the best stories come from.”

But as Byer prepares for her special, it’s clear that this isn’t just another gig. It’s the culmination of years of hard work, taking her from the Upright Citizens Brigade , a renowned improv and sketch comedy theater in Los Angeles known for launching the careers of comedians like Amy Poehler and Aziz Ansari, to the sets of major television shows. Byer admits that balancing multiple projects can be a bit chaotic, whether it’s her voice work on animated shows like “Rugrats” and “Tuca & Bertie” or her four podcasts, or myriad other projects she juggles on the regular.

“I love it when there isn’t a breath in the day,” she shares. “I love it when things are back to back. I have ADHD so it works with my brain to be like, ‘Oh, I got to do this, and then this, and then this’. Driving onto a lot never gets old. Being on a sound stage never gets old. Recording podcasts never gets old. Stand-up never gets old. There’s always something fun that’s happening. I love what I do, which sounds so corny, but it’s true.”

Helping her keep things afloat these days is her “lifeline,” a.k.a. her personal assistant Lindsay. Asking for help is a major theme for Byer, who emphasizes the importance of leaning on others. “I used to think I had to do everything on my own,” she reflects, “but now I know the power of surrounding myself with incredible people.”

While her comedy continues to evolve, Byer’s stand-up remains rooted in her own life experiences. Her upcoming special will tackle everything from dating disasters to societal pressures around body image. In particular, Byer touches on the recent Ozempic craze, poking fun at the absurdity of the diet industry.

“It’s so funny, every time I make an Ozempic joke in Los Angeles and ask the crowd who has actually taken it, the room goes dead silent. I’m always like, ‘Really? In Los Angeles? Are you kidding me? You guys are a bunch of liars sitting in the dark; there’s no way!’” she shared with a laugh. “I think with each special or each new hour as a comedian, it’s not about changing your brand, it’s more about evolution.”

The show also reflects her joy in returning to live audiences and being able to do exactly what she wants.

“You know, sometimes being on a set, things don’t go as planned or the scene isn’t working or there might be a delay with the location and it can become frustrating but then on the weekends when I get to do stand up, I just get to do exactly what I want,” she said. “On a set, there isn’t instant gratification, but when you’re on stage, the audience tells you immediately that they like what you are saying. There’s nothing like being on stage. I feel at home, I feel good.”

Of course, Byer’s journey to success hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2020, she made history as the first Black woman nominated for an Emmy in the outstanding host for a reality or competition program category. She notes the stigma surrounding body types in food-related media, highlighting that heavier individuals are often sidelined in food commercials.

“Sometimes people ask what it felt like to be nominated, and I don’t think it’s humbling. It felt validating,” she reflects. It was really wild and felt great. I hope it opens doors for hiring fat Black women, queer people, and trans people. The average woman is a size 15 or something, yet we rarely see that kind of representation on television.”

As Byer continues to break barriers in comedy, she’s constantly exploring new material and pushing herself creatively. She mentions the delicate balance of creating fresh content for both her podcasts and stand-up sets, ensuring she doesn’t repeat the same stories across platforms. “It’s tricky to remember what I’ve said where,” she admits, “but I love being able to reach different audiences in different ways.”

As her career continues to soar, Byer remains focused on what’s most important—making people laugh and staying grounded with the help of her close-knit circle. Her upcoming special is yet another chapter in a career that shows no signs of slowing down, and for Byer, that’s just the way she likes it.

“I love stand-up,” she says. “It’s where I started, and it’s still where I feel the most free. It’s where I can be my weirdest, fullest self, and that’s where I belong.”

Orda Cave: Underwater Gem of Siberia, Russia

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

orda cave

Orda Cave is a gypsum crystal cave located underneath the western Ural Mountains in Russia. The cave was formed in gypsum during the Permian period (Perm is the period of the Paleozoic era –and got its name in honor of the Russian city of Perm). The mouth is near the shore of the Kungur River just outside Orda, Perm Krai in Russia.

orda cave

A local myth tells of the "Lady of the Orda Cave" who is said to live in the caves. In 2013 Natalia Avseenko, a former free diving champion, was featured in a photographic series designed to illustrate the legend.

orda cave

The length of this cave is 5,150 meters. The limit is not defined yet as exploration is ongoing. It is full of big chambers and rooms, some of which are the size of a football field. It is also a the cave which resembles maze. Many groups spend days inside the cave, gradually exploring more and more of the system.

orda cave map

Victor Lyagushkin, a journalist and underwater photographer, led around 150 expeditions into the caves over a six-month period in 2011.The photographs taken by his team were published in the Orda Cave Awareness Project alongside stories from other divers who had visited the cave system.During the dives Lyagushkin used a funnel system to direct the air bubbles to the mouth of the cave and away from the delicate gypsum, fearing that it might easily be damaged. The diving team were also the first people to produce a spherical panorama of an underwater cave.

Although the water is extremely cold, averaging only 40 F (4 degrees C), the mineral-rich area surrounding the cave filters the water and makes it very clear. Divers have a visibility of over 50 yards (46 m) and it almost doesn’t get blurred when diving.

Dry suits are absolutely necessary and sidemount rigs will allow easier access when penetrating the narrowest sections of the cave. Proper training in drysuit diving, cave diving and sidemount diving are essential.

On the good side - the cave is shallow enough, with average depths of 15 meters with no significant currents. You can penetrate far from the entrance and still not get on the decompression.

On the other hand - the walls and the ceiling (sulfate rocks) are very fragile. The time of the dive is limited to low water temperatures and equipment configuration: from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The side aisles have thick layers of silt which can be stirred up easily.

Diving Orda Cave

Still there are very few people who have seen the beauty of this cave. Low temperatures, complexity of the dive, particular equipment configuration sort out many divers. The cave was only discovered in the middle of the last century, and people started visiting it only recently – about 20 years ago.

Those who have been diving there describe it as "Enomorous Cosmos Under the Ice". My friend, Nazar Karmakov, who has done some of his cave training with Cave Gravity in Yucatan caves: " While diving caves of Yucatan, I felt in love instantly with cenotes, their light play, unreal formations and the beauty of halocline. It is hard to get impressed by any cave after diving Yucan caves. But when I dove Orda, I was mesmorzid by the size of the cave, by the ideal shapes of white gypsum, almost too ideal looking rocks. It would be incorrect to compare Yucatan caves to Orda Cave. While I felt in love with caves in Yucatan from the first dive, Orda Cave is Cosmos, probably the only cosmos in Russia that there is..."

Check out the video below directed by Stratis Kas at www.intothewild.tech who offers guided tours of the Orda Cave as well as full dive and stay packages. The video perfectly shows what a day of diving in the Orda Cave looks like. Just a walk to the cave entrance in the winter times is an adventure itself. Snow extending to the horizon, fresh and crisp Siberian air and getting under the ice crust to see the gypsum cave - captivating.

The water is freezing but nevertheless the cave has tiny living inhabitants such as a blind sand hopper (Amphipod Crangonyx).

You can dive the cave all year around. There is also cave diving training available on the location. Training in these conditions must be tough but it will surely make you a more confident diver.

To get to the Orda Cave, you can fly to the airport of the city of Perm which accepts direct flights from Moscow. You stay overnight at either the village of Orda or the city of Kungur. Both places are a car ride from the airport. The village of Orda is the closest to the cave entrance, which is just a few hundred meters away.
