Active adventure

A vertical adventure in soweto: the orlando towers bungee.

T T he Orlando Towers bungee in Soweto adds a whole new dimension to sightseeing in this famous Johannesburg township. Choose from one of the many adventures offered by the Soweto towers and enjoy one of Johannesburg’s most vibrant landmarks like never before. With 100m drop to the ground, bungee jump, swing or free fall your way to the bottom.

This is definitely one of the most exciting ways to see one of South Africa's biggest and most famous townships. Based around the Orlando Towers, part of the old Orlando Power Station and a major Soweto attraction, outdoor adventure activities are fast changing the way visitors experience this already vibrant place.

For starters, you now have the most awesome view of Soweto from the top of the towers. Then, of course, there's the adrenaline rush; never before could you enjoy such heart-pumping adventures in a genuine township setting.

A Soweto adventure experience includes the bungee jump, a tower swing (the world's first between two cooling towers), an internal tower swing and base jumping, all off the top of the west tower, some 100m up.

Once you're secured in your harness, an open-air lift transports you along the outside of the tower to a platform, 3m from the top. A quick walk along the floating staircase takes you to the tower's rim and to either the sky-bridge (between the two towers) for the bungee or the platform for the swing.

And then...you jump! The Soweto Bungee Jump sees you falling 33 storeys down, and the Power Swing offers a 40m freefall before the swing cables kick in. The ominously named Abyss, another world-first, is similar to the Power Swing but sees you jumping inside the tower, swinging across the width of its base. There's also a viewing platform for the slightly less adventurous.

The Orlando Towers played a significant role in Soweto's history. The towers were recently repainted by famous South African illustrator Karabo Poppy, whose uniquely South African style is instantly recognisable on the iconic landmark. The mural is a celebration of Soweto’s vibrant creativity and an excellent example of proudly South African art.

Soweto is South Africa’s largest and most culturally influential informal settlement and when you reach the rim of the tower it is a good idea to pause to take in the panoramic view before proceeding to the jump deck. Enjoy it now as it is unlikely that it is the view you will be focusing off as you contemplate the 33 stories high jump!

Although the Orlando Towers no longer function as a power station, you will still feel the electricity in the air as you get ready to take an adrenaline pumping leap of the building.

Hop-Off at any of the stops to explore and experience the various attractions and the Cooling Towers are bound to be a blast.

The Orlando Towers were once an eyesore on the Soweto skyline, a reminder of a bygone industrial era. But after their transformation with Soweto Towers , an action adventure company, they’ve become landmarks and the hottest sites in Soweto for adventure! There’s plenty to see and do at the towers, with activities ranging from exciting to heart-stoppingly exhilarating. Who needs a mountain when you’ve got the Orlando Towers!

Bungee Jumping

Bungee jumping is what the towers are most famous for. The only bungee jump between two towers in the world, it’s a jump of 100m facilitated by highly trained adventure sports guides and experts. No need to book, it’s a first come first serve kind of vibe. There is an additional type of bungee jumping they offer called the Straitjacket jump ; with your arms pinned to your body in a straitjacket, it’s a more exhilarating jump!

Important to note is that no child under 12 may go to the top of the tower, and there are weight limits; you must be between 35 kg and 110 kg to jump. Under 18s will need a signed consent form from their parent or guardian. If you want videos or photos taken of your daring leap of faith it’s R150 a video per jump and R100 for photos per jump exclusively.

SCAD Free Falling

Officially the world’s highest SCAD Free Fall , this is a must-do for the adrenaline junkies. SCAD stands for Suspended Catch Air Device, and as you can expect, you’re going to free fall into it! Completely untethered but securely strapped into a controlled position you are dropped from 70 M up down into the net, without any noticeable impact as it absorbs and slows your momentum.

The same rules apply for SCAD Free Falling as bungee jumping. No under 12s allowed, and the weight limit is 35 Kg to 110 Kg. If you’re under 18 you’ll need a permission slip from a parent or guardian.

Climbing Wall

Take on a 25 M climbing wall with varying difficulties and angles, putting you to the test! Show off your climbing skills and endurance by climbing from one rock to the next, all while securely harnessed for your safety.

Booking for this is absolutely necessary, so be sure to prepare in advance. Under 18s will still need a permission slip but it’s open to most age groups. It’s a safe activity that’s fun for everyone!

Base Jumping

For the experienced base jumpers only, the Orlando Towers are a safe base jumping location. It has to be pre-arranged with their base coordinator, Danilo Pagani, and you have to have done over 100 free falls to qualify, so it’s really not for everybody. But if you are a professional jumper, the Orlando Towers are there for you to conquer!

In the foundations of the Western tower is a paintball range ready for a round of fun and excitement! The price includes 200 paintballs, as well as a mask and gas refill for your gun. You must book online if your group is over 10 people, but if not you can just arrive and pay at the venue.

Soweto Outdoor Adventures

Right next door to the Orlando Towers is Soweto Outdoor Adventures, which hosts quad biking, go karting, races and paintball. It makes for a great opportunity to go quad biking around the towers or put foot and race around the dirt tracks!

The tour was hard as it was a lot of ups and downs on old bicycles and rough streets and paths, but it was amazing! What a great way to experience the history of this country and meet the people. People were yelling hello to us as we went by on the bikes and encouraging us as we were going back up the hills. It was an experience we will never forget! Well worth the money and time! • christian_krull 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing experience! Unfortunately the tour wasn’t what we expected and what we came for. The price of the 4h tour is not justifiable. We were a group of 6 persons, no one of us got a bike in well shape. At all bikes the breaks weren’t working, the gears are out of order and much more safety relevant parts are not in shape. Our tour through the Soweto was more like a „selling“ tour. Our guides expected money for the visit in the Soweto, to buy something for kids, to take photos with artists or we should buy art on the street. Actually we thought that everything was paid with the tour fee. Throughout the tour, we spent in totally maybe 15min in real Soweto, the rest was just riding with quick selling and eating stops. Our question ‚how much of the amount that we paid for the tour is for the people in Soweto’ wasn’t answered. We are really disappointed from the tour and don’t know how they got so many good reviews in the web. A mail with a personal feedback and questions to the owner of the company wasn’t answered. The tour can not be recommended. Read more Written November 23, 2019

The guide is super friendly and knowledgeable. The group was small and we were able to visit the parts of Soweto to our liking. • Random23983 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Would be great without the husstle We enjoyed our time but there was just too much hustling for money going on. To start 4 hours costs you 600 rand and they loan you a broken down kids bike worth about 200 rand. Then you're wheeled around to the guides favourite friends bars and shops and then encouraged to no end to do the bungee jump which the guides admit to being allowed to "somehow" do free We bought our guide lunch and beers at the bungee place (which was about 2-3x more expensive than a normal place) and then we agreed to drop him near his home (on the way) in our uber. That was fine but he kept reminding us every 5 minutes on the journey that we had not paid him for his "good service" until we coughed up a tip. That wasn't too bad but what really troubled us was the way we were suggested to do a side tour of the shanty town which turned out to be with the best dressed and fattest guy around who then kept insisting we give him a "donation" while we were deep inside a place we didn't feel safe. To be fair I guide said we would be asked for a donation that was purely at our option but it certainly didn't feel optional. At the start a single lady turned up at the same time as us and when we suggested she should join us (thinking of safety) the guides were clearly fighting over her (tip potential) and we took off in separate ways. Everything else on the day was great and it was really nice to cycle through the communities and see how local people lived. All the locals were so happy and our guides clearly knew everybody and waved at them. we had a great time except for these experiences which is a shame. I think this probably started as a wonderful local experience that the owner set up and is now just turning in to a cash grab. This is my first time to Africa so perhaps you might tell me this is normal which would be sad. Read more Written October 13, 2019

Saw Nelson Mandela's old gaff and visited the migrants in the shanty town area. Was all interesting. The visit to the Hector Peterson museum was very educational for my kids and a poignant reminder of the horror of apartheid. There was only the 3 of us during that session so we had a private bike tour. We enjoyed being able to see most of the sites in Soweto and we felt safe the entire trip. It was worthwhile and we learnt a lot about the history and culture in the area. It’s quite physically demanding due to the hills in some part of the ride but you’re given time to rest and regenerate. Overall we had a great time and remember to bring spare change if you would like to tip! Read more Written July 7, 2019

We had a bycicle tour of 4 hours (mum and son, he turned out 17 the day of this tour) The welcome was really so warm!, we felt welcome(I had written some e-mails with the owner Bushi before our trip, because of my sons birthday). Our tourguide was Lerato, he was so amazing, he new a lot of Soweto and knew almost all the people in Soweto ;-) We saw a lot of things and he took all the time and waited for me cycling up the hill, so sweat :-) And what did Bushi for my son.... She arranged a choir of students (they were outside the Hector Pieterson museum) all of a sudden they came together and started singing "Happy Birthday"to my sun. So great!!! Then he had to stand in the middle of them a Bushi was there too and they made pictures. When we finished the tour Bushi had a surprise for my son, he got a frame with the picture they had made earlier. What a nice present/surprise! We highly recommend this cycle tour Very personal and a lot of skills! Bushi and Lerato thank you so much for this memorable Day!!! Read more Written June 28, 2019

  • patrickcI6134MK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nice trip with tumi We booked a 4 hour cycle tour. Our tour guide was Tumi, who is more of an entertainer than a straight up Fact-Teller. He does tell you Something about places here and there, but overall he's more there so you have fun. The bikes: they were a mixed bag to be honest. My brakes were not really reliable, so when we went downhill I had to be really careful. It was okay though for me. If you don't feel safe on bikes in general better check before you start the tour. The stops: we visited everything of interest in Soweto. You will see a lot of the every day Life of people living in Soweto. Things you would probably not dare to discover on your own, we found that very interesting! At the stops, be aware that people will try to sell you stuff or ask for handouts. Tumi was not pushing us though, he always said "if you want to, have a look" and if we wanted to travel on, we could always do. Only thing that disappointed: the "most famous road" where Mandela's and tutus house is located. It's loud, full of bars, drunks and beggars. You can't see tutus house at all, just a big wall with a blue plate on it telling you about the house that lies behind. Overall it's a very weird way that they turn the street of their most beloved characters into a touristic party street. They want to make bank with these houses, that's for sure. We do enjoyed the trip though, just take some small details with a grain of salt. Read more Written April 14, 2019
  • Siddhartha_T 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great experiences but there were alot of extra charges not advertised beforehand. I did the half day tour. Getting there: I used their taxi service however the guy was late and got lost and he ended up calling me an uber two hours after my pickup time. It was still cheaper than an uber but not the greatest start. The ride: It was a pretty easy going pace. There were some hills but i'm pretty sure just about anyone with a bit of experience could do it. A bit of traffic here and there but my guide Tumi was great at letting me know what to do all the time. I got a flat close to the end but with a couple of stops for pumping we were able to make it back. The bikes were in decent enough shape for the ride. The Local Guides Well what I can I say. I paid quite a bit of money for the tour and I was twice turned over to 'local' guides who then asked me for tips and once I was taken into a kids school in the ghetto area and was basically told to give money for the children. I'm happy to help out people in need I guess just considering that I'm paying you guys for the tour i'm a little surprised that you're then asking me to pay for more tour guides. My Guide: Tumi was very nice and accommodating. He wanted to know what I was interested in so he could show me around. He was able to secure us some local beer which was a treat. The tour: It was a nice mix of locals, history, and activities. Seeing how locals live was a treat. I'm sure few people from Joburg venture into where we went. This is a great trip for people of all ages. Thanks guys Read more Written April 13, 2019

We saw a township we might have otherwise missed, and learned a tremendous amount about modern South African history. Was a great lead-in to the Apartheid Museum, which we visited next. Extremely friendly guides and felt safe the entire time--a second rider blocked traffic for us and did minor trouble-shooting on bikes to keep the ride smooth... LOVED this excursion! Got to stop off at Mandela’s house too. The only thing I would suggest changing is maybe add in a stop for drinks, it was very hot and we had run out of water. Other than that it was a really good tour, keep up the good work!! Read more Written March 16, 2019
  • X6528TUmichaelg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Incredible experience with the joyful, faithful at happy Tumi at the helm Growing up in the United States in the 80s and 90s, I became interested in Soweto when Nelson Mandela visited my hometown of Oakland, CA upon his release. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Soweto would be this vibrant, this warm and this accessible for foreigners. Tumi and the master mechanic Banda provided me with a brand new bicycle and continuous tips throughout the tour about the gears and the particulars of navigating Soweto traffic. Everywhere we went, people greeted us warmly with waves and smiles. This was crucial because Tumi walked me through some of the darkest moments of the apartheid era when students were murdered in the 100s by police. The absolute highlight of the tour came as a result that I happen to book on a Sunday and beautiful gospel music filled the air. Sensing my interest, Tumi steered us into a couple of churches where we were able to enjoy some enthusiastic singing and dancing to fill our spirits with joy. I highly recommend this tour to anyone coming to Johannesburg. Cycle Tours of Soweto even arranged transport to in from my hotel fitting this around my flight schedule. God bless the whole team at Cycle Tours of Soweto. Read more Written March 3, 2019

9 Best Things To Do In Johannesburg, South Africa

J o’burg, or Jozi as locals affectionately call it, or sometimes E’Goli or the “City of Gold” because of its historical links to gold mining — how much do you know about the city of Johannesburg? Located in the eastern part of the country, Johannesburg is a massive city, the largest in South Africa. It is South Africa’s financial center, a city that has shaped the country’s history and politics, and one that is filled with treasures.

Often overlooked in favor of other more picturesque parts of South Africa, Johannesburg is often just a stopover for international tourists, being home to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest airport on the African continent. Often the jumping-off point for a safari and mostly enjoyed on a quick layover, Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. On one hand, there’s the poverty and struggles of Soweto, and on the other, there are the glitzy skyscrapers and “super homes” of Sandton, which is often referred to as Africa’s richest square mile. Despite its complicated past, the City of Gold has a lot to offer tourists.

There’s a lot to see, do, and learn here, much more than you may imagine. Read on for my top tips for things to do in Johannesburg.

1. The City Center

A great way to start your Johannesburg experience is by heading into the city center, which is full of historic buildings. The city’s reputation can make it a bit intimidating for solo travel, so a good option for getting a feel for South Africa’s biggest and richest city is by joining the safety and security of a guided walking tour . Visit Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa’s first black-owned law firm. Get a 360-degree view of Johannesburg from the Carlton Centre, a 50-story skyscraper located in central Johannesburg. Admire heritage buildings on historic Main Street. Visit the Workers Museum and Museum Africa. Get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the people, lifestyle, and culture of this complex city.

2. Constitution Hill

If you’re visiting South Africa, spend some time learning about apartheid — a brutal period of national segregation that lasted 43 years. A visit to Constitution Hill will give you a better understanding of this troubled era.

Constitution Hill was once a notorious complex of prisons, known as “The Fort,” where political activists and ordinary citizens alike were incarcerated throughout the apartheid era. Thousands of men and women — of all races, ages, social statuses, and political beliefs, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi — were imprisoned and tortured here.

Constitution Hill overlooks the city and has been transformed into beautiful, thought-provoking museums focussing on the promotion of human rights. Some interesting exhibits include Number Four Museum (once male prisoner cells), the Old Fort Museum (where the whites-only prison was located), and the Women’s Gaol Museum. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter the still-functioning High Court, if no proceedings are in progress.

Visiting Constitution Hill will give you deeper insights into South Africa’s history and you should pair your visit with a tour of the Apartheid Museum, whose immersive exhibits explore this tragic time in more depth.

3. The Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum will give you glimpses of apartheid, the laws of segregation according to racial groups, and South Africa’s painful journey to freedom.

On arrival, you’ll receive an entry ticket that will randomly classify you as white or non-white and you may only enter through the gate indicated for the race you have been allocated. That’s just to give you a taste of the reality of the past and set the atmosphere for the rest of your visit.

There are two main exhibitions in the Apartheid Museum , The Permanent Exhibition and The Mandela Exhibition, as well as rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of the issue more in depth. The permanent exhibition takes you through some of the painful events of South Africa’s struggle for liberation. The Mandela Exhibition gives you an opportunity to learn about the leading statesman who was at the forefront of the country’s struggle against apartheid, including his time as a prisoner for 27 years.

4. Soweto Township

About 12 miles from Jo’burg center, Soweto is the largest township in South Africa with around 1.3 million inhabitants. During the apartheid regime, Soweto was at the heart of the movement to end apartheid and was a no-go area for tourists. More recently, the South African government has focussed on developing tourism in Soweto, making it a safe, dynamic, and interesting place to visit with some wonderful historical areas to explore, as well as an up-and-coming adventure sports scene.

The best way to experience Soweto is on a guided tour with someone who’ll take you to the main landmarks and tell you about their relevance, including Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

If you’re looking for a different side of the township, check out the activities at Soweto Towers. These striking structures, which were once part of a power station, now serve as an entertainment center and adrenaline-junky paradise. Bungee jumping, from a 328-foot-high suspension bridge, is the big attraction here. You can also try paintball or base jumping.

5. Maboneng Precinct

Another fun thing to do in Johannesburg is take a tour of the “super cool” Maboneng Precinct. Once a rundown part of town, a renovation project has turned it into an up-and-coming neighborhood where you’ll find great restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, and art galleries. Maboneng is a Sesotho word meaning “place of lights,” and the name perfectly describes the district. It is Johannesburg’s downtown fashion corner, buzzing lifestyle playground, and one of the city’s major creative hubs. Maboneng is filled with remarkable works of art, beautiful murals, and colorful graffiti.

6. The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

If you’re looking for something a little more “natural,” you’ll find plenty to enjoy at the Botanical Gardens. There are nine national botanical gardens in South Africa, and the Walter Sisulu , with its 200 acres of greenery and seven gardens of local and international plants, is one of them.

Highlights include the Witpoortjie Waterfall, Birds and Butterfly Garden, Fern Trail, Children’s Garden, Herb Garden, and the impressive array of desert plants in the Succulent Garden. If you’re a theater fan, spend some time in the Shakespeare Garden, which is filled with plants and herbs that were featured in the bard’s plays. The gardens are a great place to unwind and enjoy a bit of nature in the heart of the city.

7. Art Galleries

Located in Joubert Park, Johannesburg Art Gallery is one of the best art spots to visit in Johannesburg. With an impressive collection of art, including prints that date back to the 15th century, it features works of artists such as Dali and Picasso, and a section dedicated to local artists as well. Then, make your way over to the Wits Art Museum . Located on the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg campus, the Wits Art Museum houses 15,000 works spanning from the 19th century to the modern day.

Another excellent art venue in the city is the Goodman Gallery which focuses specifically on art with a social justice component. Its exhibits highlight emerging artists who are regarded as having helped shape the landscape of contemporary art in South Africa.

8. Food Tours

Johannesburg is often said to be the foodie capital of South Africa, but if you want to go for something super-traditional, opt for a typical African meal in Soweto, Yeoville, or Maboneng.

South Africa’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its food and one of the coolest things to do in Johannesburg is to enjoy the cuisine. Local delicacies can include chicken neck, chicken feet, pigs’ trotters, and tripe, all accompanied by the unmissable paap — a ground-maize dish quite similar to polenta. Check out the Taste of Africa food tour which will get you sampling a variety of Pan-African restaurants in the thriving Yeoville neighborhood.

Had enough art, culture, or food and want to stretch your legs — how about teeing off at one of the best golf courses in Johannesburg? The Royal Johannesburg Golf Club , which has been running since 1890, offers two championship-level courses. At the Bryanston Country Club , there are a variety of greens for people of all skill levels, complete with plenty of entertaining water hazards. The links at Observatory Golf Course feature challenging holes and are committed to making the sport affordable for average individuals.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, vibrant nightlife, great restaurants, or renowned cultural institutions, Johannesburg boasts a rich history and culture with museums, galleries, and historical sites to explore. A visit to Johannesburg is bound to make your stay in South Africa a memorable one.
