Safari or Tropical Roof
Safari roof was the roof with the two windows up high,on the curved side section,usually in the station wagons,with the extra side windows on the rear of the vehicle,and sometimes a rear door.Mainly LWB. Tropical roof is the double skinned roof. FWIW,the S1 in my sig has the tropical roof,as noted on the original invoice for £8 as an extra.

Good Day All! I'm a newbie to the Land Rover bug and have a ton of questions, of course. I bought my LR2 in Oct 2008, just purchased an '04 Disco II SE, and already have my eyes set on either a Series III or a IIa 88" for my future purchase. Questionette #1: I've been drooling over all the pics of the Series vehicles on the internet and keep seeing this Safari (double skin) roof.

But the JL is better for this with the safari top and doesn't need the back soft top connected to the rear. Safari roof.
The Series 1 Land Rover (1948-1958) was designed for use in Africa. It had a double-skinned "Safari Roof" made of steel, raised on hundreds of half-inch pins. A lion could lie on it. The purpose was to leave the actual roof of the cab in shade. There are many pictures of lions on Land Rover roofs.
Wanted: 88 safari top for my Series one
There is a tropical roof for the 88 inch series one. It was used on the series one 88 SW. Its the same as the 86 inch tropical roof with the long alpine windows. The SII-SIIA roofs will not fit as they are narrower than the SI. The sunsheet on a SI is therefore wider and has the curves in the wrong places.

safari top question
I rescued a 109 recently, the safari top (pic attached) has sills over the top of the oval windows, none of my other 109's have this. Is the sill something Land Rover had on certain models, or later versions? or is it something a previous owner had installed? Any help / insight would be most appreciated. Regards, David
