The wonders of New Zealand require a visitor’s full attention, so why not give your eyes a treat and roll through the country on a scenic train ride ? Great Journeys New Zealand offers a brand-new collection of multiday, guided rail tours that sweep across spectacular landscapes on both North and South islands .
The just-launched rail adventures take three existing train lines and mix them with a fresh crop of guided tour itineraries — ranging from six to 17 days — leading guests on a variety of off-rail excursions in search of Kiwi experiences. The Northern Explorer train starts in Auckland and runs just over 400 miles south to New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington. Along the way, tours bring guests to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and into Tongariro National Park, where they’ll see towering Mount Ruapehu. After crossing the 58-mile Cook Strait aboard the Interislander ferry, travelers can transfer to the Coastal Pacific train at Picton. The route passes through Blenheim’s vineyards and hugs Kaikōura's coast (renowned for whale sightings) on the way to Christchurch. Finally, the TranzAlpine train traverses the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth. Private coach or shuttle tours can whisk passengers to nearby destinations, including Queenstown and Milford Sound.

“Great Journeys New Zealand takes travelers through some of the country's most stunning and diverse landscapes, from rolling hills and lush forests to rugged coastlines and sparkling oceans,” says Mark Hockley, senior tour manager and partnership specialist at Great Journeys New Zealand. “The scenic routes provide panoramic views that can't be found by road, and the relaxed and comfortable train ride allows travelers to sit back, relax, and fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of New Zealand .”
Tour guides provide local insights and personal introductions. “There’s a story at every stop, from tales about Kiwiana culture to facts about New Zealand's curious birds, the history of Māori culture, geology in volcanic regions, rock formations, orientation of cities and locations in New Zealand, and so much more,” Hockley says. An audio commentary system, triggered by GPS, offers additional facts and historical background as the train chugs along. “The views really are breathtaking — from the volcanic peaks of Middle Earth in Ruapehu to sighting the mystical Blue Lake in the northern reaches of New Zealand's Southern Alps — but we also visit local stores and meet sheep farmers and winemakers, and hear their stories along the way,” he says.
“Māori storytelling and legends are woven into every guide's narrative throughout all trips — it's an important part of the New Zealand experience,” says Hockley. “We offer unique cultural experiences on many of our tours, ranging from visiting a Māori village to tasting Māori food, learning about Māori arts and crafts, and more.”

Scenic Class carriages are open and airy, thanks to panoramic windows and skylights, with spacious seating and airbag suspension for a comfy ride. Open carriages are also available — perfect for fresh-air viewing and photography. When you’re hungry, the onboard Scenic Cafe offers New Zealand wine and beer selections, along with dishes showcasing local ingredients, from roasted free-range chicken with Manuka honey to High Country lamb to South Island hot-smoked salmon salad. Starting April 14, Great Journeys will add Scenic Plus service , with a new, custom-built carriage plus a dedicated chef.
Tours are offered on specific dates from January through early May, and travelers can choose between Classic (six to 15 days, with a maximum group size of 35) or Signature (six to 17 days, with a maximum group size of 20).

A comprehensive guide to New Zealand’s Train Journeys
New Zealand train journeys are a unique and relaxing way to see another side of this spectacular country.
Many of New Zealand's most stunning views remain inaccessible by road. This is where rail travel comes into scenic play. Clever engineering has resulted in a small (but comprehensive) railway network offering the opportunity to enjoy some of those views - and there are many incredible train journeys available. Complete with food and drink, panoramic windows and reclining seats, these journeys allow you to sit back and enjoy the view as you traverse snowy alpine passes, remote national parks, volcanic fields and windswept coastlines.
North Island
The North Island has one key scenic railway, The Northern Explorer and two (notable) smaller ones - Driving Creek Railway and The Forgotten World adventures.
- The Northern Explorer: Cutting through the heart of the North Island, the Northern Explorer travels between Auckland - New Zealand's largest metro area - and Wellington - New Zealand’s political and cultural capital. The 12 hour trip is truly remarkable, crossing lush farmland and the volcanic plateau. See Tongariro National Park - home to Mordor, the fictional stronghold of Sauron in Lord of the Rings - through wide panoramic windows and open air viewing decks. The park’s three active volcanoes - Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe - can be spotted along with ancient lava flows, native beech forest and deep river gorges. You'll also go through the renowned Raurimu Spiral - an astounding feat of engineering. Passengers can choose to sit around tables, or in recliners that can be rotated to face whichever direction the train is traveling. The carriage windows are non-tinted, non-reflective glass - optimal for taking pictures as you travel. Overhead HD screens keep track of your journey while an automated commentary is available via headphones at your seat.
- Driving Creek Railway: This one hour narrow gorge railway trip is located in the Coromandel and provides a thrilling insight into the history of the area. Acclaimed potter Barry Brickell originally developed this railway as a means of transporting clay to his kiln. The innovatively designed train carriages journey through regenerating kauri forest and native bush before ending with soaring views over the Hauraki Gulf and surrounding islands. Unique pottery sculptures and outdoor art line the tracks while the neighbouring predator free wildlife sanctuary is a must see.
- The Forgotten World Railway Adventures: This railway adventure is like no other. Travelling through the heart of Taranaki, you’ll take specially adapted golf carts along decommissioned railway lines go over bridges and through tunnels to faded townships of the past. Venture into the Republic of Whangamomona, once a thriving pre-war community, now a ‘ghost town’ of 40 people. Learn about the hardy pioneers who built this line - an essential link to the outside world. Livelihoods such as coal mining and farming were only viable because of this rail connection. Abandoned stations along the line are visible, but decay is evident - and this only adds to the experience. Choose from between one and four day tours.
South Island
There are many more scenic rail journeys in the South due to the dramatic landscape. The most well known is the TranzAlpine Scenic Train but other notable journeys include The Oamaru Seasider, The Coastal Pacific and the Taieri Gorge Railway.
- The TranzAlpine: The TranzAlpine tracks a route from Christchurch to Greymouth - from one coast of the South Island to another - and is considered one of the world's greatest scenic railway journeys. You'll cross the Canterbury Plains before weaving your way through the gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri. Ascending the Southern Alps, you'll be awestruck by the sheer grandeur of these mountains, before descending into native beech rainforest to arrive in the seaside town of Greymouth. With huge panoramic windows and an open air viewing car to better enable photography, passengers can choose to sit one way or around a table. As with the Northern Explorer, HD screens track the journey while at-seat audio commentary is available throughout.
- The Coastal Pacific: The Coastal Pacific follows the coast from port town Picton to Christchurch. You’ll pass through Marlborough wine country, the Kaikoura Ranges and the patchwork Canterbury Plains - traversing over 98 kilometres of rugged coastline. On this journey the sky seems endless - dissolving into the blue of the pacific ocean horizon. Watch the seabirds and seals from open air carriages or view the mountains from inside through huge panoramic windows and reclining seats.
We recommend that people add at least one of these experiences to their New Zealand visit because a train is a great platform for taking in New Zealand scenery. It's perhaps the most scenic train ride in New Zealand, and one of the most scenic train trips anywhere in the world. The TranzAlpine, run by New Zealand train operator KiwiRail as part of their Great Journeys of New Zealand division, runs once daily between Christchurch, Arthur's Pass and Greymouth on the South Island's west coast, through the amazing misty mountain scenery of the Southern Alps. The journey takes 4½ hours, and if you like you can go there and back in a day with an hour in Greymouth. Or take the TranzAlpine one-way, and connect with buses down the west coast to Franz Josef Glacier. Although I rate the North Island's Northern Explorer from Auckland to Wellington as a far more historic and epic route, and in many ways almost equally scenic, you certainly won't regret buying a ticket for the TranzAlpine! This page explains the TranzAlpine's timetable, fares, how to buy the cheapest tickets, and what there is to see on the journey.
Tranz-Alpine train times & fares
The TranzAlpine is the most successful of all of Kiwi Rail's passenger trains, popular with tour groups because of the spectacular scenery through the Southern Alps between Christchurch and the South Island's west coast at Greymouth.
The Man in Seat 61 says: "It's a fantastic trip that easily lives up to its reputation, but in many ways the TranzAlpine is not as epic or historic as the Auckland-Wellington Northern Explorer , which remains my personal favourite NZ train ride."
Days of operation : The TranzAlpine has historically run daily all year. In 2024 it's running on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays & Mondays in each direction until late September, then every day.
Composition : Scenic class seating, Scenic Plus class seating (with at-seat meal included), cafe-bar & open air viewing platform, . The journey is 223.8km.
Children aged 2-14 travel at reduced fare. Infants under 2 travel free.
£1 = 1.9 NZ Dollars. US$1 = 1.55 NZ$
How to buy tickets
What's it like on the tranzalpine.
The TranzAlpine was relaunched with new 'AK' panoramic sightseeing coaches built in Kiwi Rail's Dunedin workshops in 2011-2012. These have replaced the old rebuilt 1950s carriages used until late 2012. Photos courtesy of James Chuang
Scenic class seats , most facing direction of travel, all lining up with huge panoramic windows - note the roof skylights too!. There's loads of legroom even if you're over six feet tall. Seats are not allocated at booking, but by the train manager before departure. However, if you book by phone (or book online then call Kiwi Rail's freephone number when you get to NZ quoting your booking reference) you can make a seating request. Seats on the right-hand side of the train going to Greymouth probably get the best views, or the left-hand side returning to Christchurch. Four friends or family travelling together could request one of the few bays of 4 seats facing each other around a table, keen photographers might want to request a seat close to the open-air viewing car. Requests can't be guaranteed, but it doesn't hurt to ask! All your heavy baggage is checked in to the baggage van, only hand luggage may be taken into the seating coaches. All seats in the new 'AK' cars have power sockets for mobiles, laptops or cameras (New Zealand voltage and plug, of course). Larger photo .
Scenic Plus class seats: A new Scenic Plus class has been added to the TranzAlpine as from April 2023, in a dedicated carriage with extra-legroom reclining seats. A freshly-cooked meal & wine is included, prepared by a chef in the adjacent kitchen car and served at your seat. If you get any photos of this car and/or of the food provided, please get in touch !
Cafe-bar: In the centre of the train is a counter selling tea, coffee, wine, beer, spirits, snacks & light microwaveable meals at reasonable prices. I can recommend a cream tea in the afternoon, and a glass of Montana Sauvignon Blanc! You take your food & drink back to your seat. Bring cash if possible as cards are sometimes not accepted if the credit card machine is out of cellphone range. Larger photo .
Open-air viewing platform: At one end of the train is a large open-air viewing platform, ideal for seeing and photographing the scenery, with no glass in between you and it. Children must be accompanied. The viewing car now has additional rails to prevent people leaning out. A second open-air car is now provided on the TranzAlpine exclusively for Scenic Plus class guests.

If you're on a tight budget, don't forget the hostels. For a dorm bed or an ultra-cheap private room in backpacker hostels in most European cities use www.hostelworld.com .
Travel insurance & VPN
Always take out travel insurance.
Never travel overseas without travel insurance from a reliable insurer, with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover. It should also cover cancellation and loss of cash and belongings, up to a sensible limit. An annual multi-trip policy is usually cheaper than several single-trip policies even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself. Here are some suggested insurers. Seat61 gets a small commission if you buy through these links.
Get an eSIM with mobile data package
Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a mobile data package for the country you're visiting and stay connected. Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM card so you don't need to buy a physical SIM, including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list . Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .
Get a Curve card for foreign travel
Most banks give you a poor exchange rate, then add a foreign transaction fee on top. A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month at time of writing. The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.
How it works: 1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android . 2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses. 3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card. 4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app. You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.
I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader. The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than digging a card out). I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great. See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.
Get a VPN for safe browsing. W hy you need a VPN
When you're travelling you often use free WiFi in public places which may not be secure. A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi. It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply. See VPNs & why you need one explained . ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using the links on this page, you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription. I get a small commission to help support this site.
Carry an Anker powerbank
Tickets, reservations, vaccination records and Interrail or Eurail passes are often held digitally on your mobile phone, so it's vital to keep it charged. I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over if I can't get to a power outlet. Buy from Amazon.co.uk or from buy from Amazon.com .

Depart Singapore
A day at leisure in Singapore until it’s time to leave for our evening flight to Auckland.
Breakfast, in-flight meals and drinks
Auckland, 2 nights
For those flying with Qantas & Emirates, there is a change of aircraft in Australia. If travelling with Singapore Airlines, the flight is direct to Auckland. On arrival, we are transferred to the centrally-located Sudima Auckland City Hotel for the first two nights of our New Zealand adventure.
This morning we explore Auckland, taking in the natural beauty of Waitemata Harbour and the numerous volcanic hills dotting the landscape. We also visit fashionable Parnell Village. The remainder of our day is free to relax or further explore Auckland. A trip to enjoy the views of Auckland and its harbour from the top of the southern hemisphere’s tallest building, Sky Tower , is highly recommended.
Bay of Islands, 3 nights
We journey north from Auckland, crossing the city’s imposing Waitemata Harbour Bridge, into a landscape of rolling hills and farmland. In the afternoon we explore Northland’s Waipoua Kauri Forest Reserve, home to gigantic kauri trees, the most famous of which is Tane Mahuta, ‘Lord of the Forest’. A stop is made in Omapere, where the panoramic views of the spectacular sand dunes and Tasman Sea are truly magnificent. Our journey ends in Paihia, gateway to the Bay of Islands, and our next three nights are spent at the Scenic Hotel Bay of Islands .
- Bay of Islands
Tour Highlight
This morning we board our catamaran as we go in search of dolphins which inhabit the deep-sea fishing grounds around the Bay of Islands. We explore the spectacular scenery of Red Head Passage, Cape Brett and Piercy Island before our skipper safely navigates through the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’. On the return journey, there’s an opportunity to purchase a public ferry ticket and visit the picturesque township of Russell to learn more about its history as a lawless trading centre in the 19th century. Our free afternoon provides an excellent opportunity to visit Waitangi National Reserve, where Maori and British chiefs signed the Waitangi Treaty in 1840.
Bay of Islands Freedom Day
Our day has been left at leisure to further explore the beautiful Bay of Islands. For many this provides a great opportunity to visit New Zealand’s northern tip at Cape Reinga , where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea collide. This fabulous full day excursion also includes a journey along Ninety Mile Beach in a custom-built coach that moves effortlessly over the terrain of sandy beaches, rugged roads and quicksand streams.
Rotorua, 2 nights
A full day travelling from the Bay of Islands to Rotorua, the centre of New Zealand’s rich Maori culture and renowned for its geothermal landscapes. This evening we attend a concert featuring traditional song and dance, including the world famous war dance – The Haka. Also included is a buffet dinner. The next two nights are spent at the four-star Distinction Hotel .
Breakfast and dinner
This morning we tour some of Rotorua’s most famous sights, including its tudor-inspired Bath House. We explore Te Puia, home to the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and its spouting geysers, bubbling mud pools and hissing fumaroles. During our free afternoon you may wish to take a scenic flight over Mount Tarawera or visit the world-renowned Polynesian Thermal Pools .
Wellington, 2 nights
Departing Rotorua, we cross the Mamaku Ranges and arrive into Hamilton where we board the Northern Explorer for our rail journey to Wellington. We view spectacular scenery through our carriage’s panoramic windows, including rocky coastlines, river gorges, dense forest, rolling green farmland, quaint towns and the spectacular peaks of Tongariro National Park. We also experience an amazing feat of railway engineering as we wind our way through the Raurimu Spiral. We arrive into Wellington early in the evening and transfer to the Copthorne Hotel Oriental Bay , for the next two nights.
Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city, beautifully located within a hook-shaped harbour and surrounded by mountains. The city’s downtown area is relatively compact, making it easy to explore its many theatres, galleries and museums on foot. This morning’s orientation tour features the key sights within the city, such as the government buildings and Parliament House, as well as enjoying wonderful views of the city and its picturesque harbour from the top of Mount Victoria. Our free afternoon provides an excellent opportunity to explore Wellington further. A visit to Te Papa (New Zealand’s national museum) is highly recommended.
Christchurch, 2 nights
We leave Wellington this morning and cruise across the Cook Strait to New Zealand’s South Island. Dolphins and sea birds can often be seen playing in the waters, and the scenery is truly magnificent as we enter Queen Charlotte Sound and reach South Island. In Picton, we board KiwiRail’s Coastal Pacific train, and from the comfort of our seats, we are in prime position to view lush native bush, soaring mountains, pretty coastal towns and the roaring Pacific Ocean, as we wind our way along this truly stunning coastline. On arrival in Christchurch, we transfer to the Distinction Hotel Christchurch , located in the heart of the city, for a two night stay.
- Christchurch
This morning, we discover Christchurch on an orientation tour, and witness its remarkable development since its devastating earthquake in 2011. Later we journey to the Waipara Valley, whose warm and dry summers, followed by cool autumn nights, make this region perfect for growing olives, lavender, hazelnuts and grapes. We explore this pretty area and sample its cool climate wines during a tasting and lunch in one of its wineries.
Breakfast and lunch
Franz Josef, 2 nights
After breakfast, we experience South Island’s striking natural landscapes in all their glory as we journey between Christchurch and Greymouth on the TranzAlpine. Considered to be one of the greatest rail journeys in the world, we cross the patchwork fields of the Canterbury Plains, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, view miles of native beech forest and traverse the Southern Alps. Leaving the epic backdrop of the Southern Alps in our wake, we continue south to Westland National Park, and the Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier , which will be our home for the next two nights.
- Franz Josef
A relaxing day to absorb the beauty of Franz Josef and the surrounding area at our leisure. Our Tour Manager will arrange a short journey into the Waiho Valley, where those who wish may take a short stroll through rainforest to a view point, to take in the glacial valley landscape. For those who want to experience a spectacular aerial view of the glacial valley and the nearby Alpine peaks, there is an opportunity to take an optional scenic helicopter flight . Timings of the helicopter flights are flexible to allow for the best weather conditions and visibility.
Queenstown, 3 nights
South Island’s spectacular scenery never fails to impress. Today’s journey takes us over the Haast River Bridge and onwards via Clark Bluff and the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea, to the Central Otago region. In the late afternoon, we arrive into Queenstown, situated within one of the most naturally stunning landscapes of New Zealand, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by incredible mountains. Our next four nights are spent at either the Millennium Hotel or the Copthorne Lakefront Hotel.
This morning, we visit nearby Arrowtown, a picturesque town which has lovingly preserved its heritage of two very different goldrush communities – Chinese and European. It’s a lovely place to explore on foot, with a well-preserved avenue lined with galleries, craft shops and cafes. We return to Queenstown and the remainder of our day is at leisure.
A Freedom Day to enjoy our glamorous alpine setting as we please. From gentle wine-tasting tours in Central Otago to incredible walking trails, a cruise on the the iconic TSS Earnslaw or exhilarating jet boat rides and four-wheel drive excursions, there are so many ways to enjoy Queenstown’s beautiful scenery. Whatever you choose to do – enjoy!
Te Anau, Overnight
Tour Highlight Today we travel to the magnificent Fiordland National Park and to Milford Sound, which will undoubtedly prove to be one of our tour’s many highlights. The scenic drive takes us through a variety of landscapes – farmland, native tussock grasslands, lush beech forests and impressive glacial valleys – before arriving at Milford Sound to begin our cruise. Only when out cruising on Milford Sound can the sheer scale of the dramatic scenery be fully appreciated: towering peaks rise all around and spectacular waterfalls cascade into the calm waters below. Our cruise takes in the impressive Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls. Remember to keep a look out for dolphins as well as seals and penguins. We spend tonight at the Distinction Luxmore Hotel .
Dunedin, 2 nights
This morning we say goodbye to Fiordland. A morning drive takes us via Mossburn and Lumsden to Gore. Fresh, green farm scenery will accompany us to Balclutha, which has a distinctive arched concrete bridge. Known as the ‘Edinburgh of the South’, Dunedin is South Island’s second largest city and is considered New Zealand’s architectural heritage capital, with its lovingly restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings. We have time to admire the beautifully landscaped trees and plants of Dunedin Botanical Gardens and the spectacular views of the Otago Peninsula and Harbour before we reach our hotel, the Scenic Southern Cross .
This morning, we enjoy a sightseeing tour taking in the city’s neo-Gothic churches, town hall, opulent theatres and other 19th century buildings. In the afternoon, why not join an optional wildlife cruise to the Otago Peninsula ? Enjoy uninterrupted views of the world’s only mainland colony of royal albatross. You may also encounter sea lions, blue penguins and Hector’s dolphins.
The final part of our journey in New Zealand takes us north as we return to Christchurch. A stop is made in Moeraki to view a collection of huge spherical boulders which are scattered along a beautiful stretch of beach. Maori legend says that the boulders are gourds washed ashore from a voyaging canoe called Araiteuri that was wrecked when it made landfall a long time ago. Scientists have discovered the boulders are actually calcite concretions, created about 65 million years ago, which have been raised from the seabed and uncovered one by one by the elements. Our next stop is Oamaru, where we stroll through New Zealand’s best preserved Victorian streets. We arrive at the Distinction Hotel in Christchurch, where we spend our final two nights in New Zealand.
Christchurch Freedom Day
A free day to spend as we please. Christchurch is a lovely city to discover, with the Riverside Markets, Christchurch Botanic Gardens and many galleries and cafes within easy strolling distance. Alternatively, an excursion to the nearby historic village of Akaroa is highly recommended. The scenic journey takes us via the stunning Banks Peninsula to the former French settlement of Akaroa, with its harbourside streets lined with arts and craft stores. We join a nature cruise around the harbour which features majestic scenery and an opportunity to discover the rare and playful Hector’s dolphins, native fur seals, penguins and many seabirds.
Depart Christchurch
We depart New Zealand for our journey home. All flights will require a connection en-route to the UK, which will be dependent on your choice of airline, stopover, flight availability and your preferred UK airport.

Learn more about Canterbury Plains
Head to the centrally located Christchurch Railway Station for your morning departure on board the TranzAlpine. Enjoy breakfast and coffee with a view in the Scenic Café as you leave the Garden City behind and head towards Springfield on the South Island Main Trunk Line.
You’ll roll across the wide patchwork expanse of the Canterbury Plains, which is New Zealand’s largest area of flat land. At Rolleston, the train turns inland, joining the Midland Line and heading towards the distinctive braids of the Waimakariri River and on to Springfield.
You’ll see the towering Torlesse mountains at the edge of the plains as you come into Springfield.
This little town is the last stop before entering the mountains on the route known as Arthur’s Pass. Originally an ancient track used by Māori for trading pounamu greenstone, it was named for Arthur Dobson, who first mapped it in 1864.
It is the next section of railway, between Springfield and Arthur’s Pass National Park, that is considered a masterpiece of engineering. It follows the winding Waimakariri River gorge, tracking along cliffs and steep banks through 15 short tunnels and four towering viaducts.
At Cass, head to the Open-Air Viewing Carriage for spectacular views of Mount Binser rising above the Waimakariri River.
The TranzAlpine will arrive mid-morning at New Zealand’s highest operational railway station. It’s a great opportunity to explore one of New Zealand’s beautiful National Parks . There’s a range of accommodation at Arthur’s Pass Village as well as hikers’ huts (opens in new window) linked by tracks throughout Arthur’s Pass National Park .

Natural wonders on the West Coast
- Pancake rocks
- Paparoa Track
Greymouth has a rich mining heritage and you can step back in time at Shanty Town , a replica 1900s pioneer town with gold panning and heritage train rides. Then pop into Monteiths , part of New Zealand’s brewing history, for a brewery tour and tasting.
Just 40 minutes north of Greymouth is Punakaiki and Paparoa National Park , where you’ll find amazing coastal rock formations like the famous Pancake Rocks and spectacular blowholes, as well as cave rafting . The walks range from the short Truman Track (30 minutes return) to the Pororari River Track and Fox River Caves Track (both three hours return), or the Paparoa track , one of New Zealand’s Great Walks , which is a 2-3 day hiking and mountain biking track.
From Greymouth, it’s an hour north-east to Reefton , another town with a gold-mining past and home to the award-winning Reefton Distilling Co. Tour the distillery and discover how they use locally foraged ingredients from the West Coast rainforests in their spirits.
Keen to see more of New Zealand’s Great Journeys ? You could return to Christchurch on the TranzAlpine and take the Coastal Explorer north to Picton, along the South Island’s beautiful east coast.
Then cross Cook Strait on the Interislander ferry and catch the Northern Explorer from Wellington to Auckland for a trip through the volcanic heart of the North Island.

The 5 Best Train Journeys in New Zealand
Backyard Production / Getty Images
Outside the greater Auckland and Wellington regions, train travel is not an everyday way of getting around in New Zealand. However, a small number of mostly long-distance routes provide a scenic and relaxed alternative to driving around New Zealand . One of these spans most of the length of the North Island, while the others traverse different regions of the South Island.
As well as connecting places of interest travelers, train travel has the benefit of allowing you to relax. Driving in New Zealand can be challenging because of the mountainous terrain and lack of highways, so including a train journey as part of your itinerary can allow you to relax and soak in the beautiful landscapes.
Here's what you need to know about the scenic train journeys of New Zealand.
Northern Explorer: Auckland to Wellington
Toni Greaves / Stringer / Getty Images
The Northern Explorer starts in Auckland and ends in Wellington, or vice versa. The route cuts through the center of the North Island and takes about 11 hours to complete, which is a comparable time to driving this same distance (400 miles). Scenic highlights include the farmland of Waikato, the dramatic hillocks and forests of the King Country, Tongariro National Park and its three volcanoes (Tongariro, Ruapehu, and Ngauruhoe), and the Kapiti Coast north of Wellington.
The Northern Explorer is a comfortable train with seats clustered around tables. There's an open-air viewing platform, onboard toilets (which are more spacious than airplane toilets), and a dining cart serving food and drinks. The food served on the train tends to be overpriced and underwhelming, so it's a good idea to bring a picnic (BYO alcohol is not allowed, however).
Travelers on the Northern Explorer can get off at stations en route, such as at Otorohanga for the Waitomo Caves or Ohakune for the Tongariro National Park, and continue on another train a few days later, or pick up a car and continue the journey from there. The train runs in either direction a few times per week, year-round.
Marlborough Flyer: Picton to Blenheim
Elen Turner
The Marlborough Flyer is the shortest (and the most charming) of the journeys on this list, as it travels a mere 18 miles between Picton and Blenheim , in the Marlborough region at the top of the South Island. By car this trip takes less than 30 minutes, but the train ride takes about an hour.
While the train travels a short distance, riding it is an experience in and of itself. As as it's a steam train from 1915, the carriages look appropriately vintage. Each carriage is sponsored by a local winery (Marlborough is the largest producer of wine in New Zealand ) and samples are given on board.
Starting in the beautiful port town of Picton in the Marlborough Sounds , the Marlborough Flyer travels past the practically endless fields of vineyards outside Blenheim before stopping at Blenheim Station, which conveniently houses The Wine Station . This innovative wine-tasting bar offers dozens of local wines in self-serve machines.
The Marlborough Flyer can be traveled as a return trip from Picton after arriving in the South Island on the Interislander Ferry, or one-way in either direction.
Coastal Pacific: Picton to Christchurch
naumoid / Getty Images
The Coastal Pacific travels along the east coast of the upper South Island, covering the 208 miles between Picton and Christchurch, stopping roughly halfway in Kaikoura . Kaikoura is a popular whale-watching destination so many travelers take the opportunity to stop there for a couple of days before continuing the train journey.
Like the Northern Explorer, the Coastal Pacific is comfortable and comes with onboard amenities. Scenic Plus Class provides freshly prepared food and commentary in an upgraded carriage.
The Coastal Explorer is seasonal and runs from early spring (September) until mid-autumn (April). It runs three times a week.
TranzAlpine: Christchurch to Greymouth
The TranzAlpine cuts through the mountainous center of the South Island, from Christchurch on the east coast to Greymouth on the west. The 139-mile journey takes five hours to complete and starts in the flat expanses of the Canterbury Plains before traveling up over the Southern Alps and ending on the wild and rugged West Coast.
The TranzAlpine is a handy way of traveling from coast to coast, which can be a challenging route to drive. Greymouth is a handy jumping-off point for exploring the West Coast, where the Hokitika Gorge, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers , Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, and the Paparoa National Park are highlights.
Like the other long-distance trains, amenities and comforts are available onboard. Scenic Plus Class offers an upgraded service.
Taieri Gorge Railway: Dunedin to Middlemarch
m-kojot / Getty Images
The Taieri Gorge Railway is another journey that's less about getting from point A to B and more about enjoying the ride. The route travels through some classic big-sky Central Otago landscape, as well as the Taieri Gorge itself. Starting in Dunedin, at the famous neo-gothic Dunedin Railway Station, the Taieri Gorge Railway travels 47 miles to the small town of Middlemarch, locally famous for its annual Singles Ball. The highlight of the trip is the dramatic Taieri Gorge, carved by the Taieri River, between the Taieri Plains and the high Maniototo Plateau, and the high railbridge.
Most passengers on the Taieri Gorge Railway return to Dunedin on the same day, as Middlemarch isn't very conveniently located for traveling elsewhere in Otago.
The Taieri Gorge Railway is run by Dunedin Railways, which also offers a couple of other day-trip train rides from Dunedin: the Inlander (between Dunedin and Hindon) and the Seasider (between Dunedin and Waitati).
