The parents of an 18-year-old high school graduate who fell overboard on a sunset cruise in the Bahamas have broken their silence.

Cameron Robbins went on a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate his graduation from the University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He and several friends were aboard the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise on 24 May when Cameron allegedly jumped off the boat on a dare.

The US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force spent several days searching for Cameron before suspending their efforts on 27 May. Following his presumed death, a memorial was planned for the teenager on Sunday (4 June).

Speaking from their home ahead of the service, Cameron’s parents William and Shari Robbins, both 54, told The New York Post they were aware of the impact their “funny and kind-hearted” son had made on people following updates of the tragic incident believed to have cut his life short.

“We are just mourning our son right now,” Ms Robbins told the Post . “We appreciate you calling. Maybe we will be able to talk more later.”

A doomed dare and a haunting video: What we know about Cameron Robbins’ cruise ship disappearance

“We appreciate everyone’s support,” Mr Robbins also said.

The University Lab School Director Kevin George told WAFB that Cameron had attended the school for 13 years. The teen also played baseball for the school, which operates as part of Louisiana State University.

“Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling. Extra counselors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news. Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well,” Mr George wrote.

The graduation trip was not organised by the school.

Baton Rouge high school senior Cameron Robbins, 18, is missing after falling off a boat in the Bahamas

According to his obituary, Cameron was not only an accomplished athlete but also loved country music and was a “big star” in karaoke.

“He was a tough player, battling back from multiple injuries, known to pitch through separated shoulders and broken hands. He hoped to continue his baseball career at the college level,” the tribute read. “...Though he left this world far too soon, he lived a life full of good friends and family.”

In a statement provided to The Independent, Jonathan Chia, a representative for Pirates’ Revenge Ltd, the parent company of Blackbeard’s Revenge, said Cameron went overboard at approximately 9.40pm local time in Montagu Bay off Athol Island in the Bahamas.

Video captured in the moments after Cameron jumped into the water showed the 18-year-old swimming around the vessel as passengers on the sunset cruise yelled at him. In the footage, individuals can be heard urging Cameron to grab onto the buoy that they threw into the water for him.

“The crew executed the ‘man overboard’ protocol in line with all approved safety procedures and company policies to ensure the best chance of retrieving an individual who has gone overboard,” Mr Chia said.

After Coast Guard crews searched more than 325 square miles, they concluded their efforts with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on 27 May. Although searches have ended, the US Coast Guard is asking anyone with new information to contact the District Seven watchstanders at 305-415-6800.

A GoFundMe has been started to benefit Cameron’s family as they deal with the aftermath of the difficult situation.

Meanwhile, online speculation has swirled over whether Cameron was attacked by a shark in the water.

Passenger on cruise ship out of Port Canaveral attacked and killed by shark in the Bahamas

A woman on a cruise ship that departed from Port Canaveral Sunday was killed by a shark in the Bahamas Tuesday, according to law enforcement authorities.

The incident involved a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania and occurred at a popular snorkeling spot near Green Cay in the northern Bahamas, police spokeswoman Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press. Skippings said the woman’s family identified it as a bull shark.

The attack occurred Tuesday while on an "independent shore excursion" in Nassau, according to Royal Caribbean International.

"Sadly, the guest passed away after arriving at a local hospital for treatment," a Royal Caribbean International representative told FLORIDA TODAY. "Royal Caribbean International is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones at this time."

The ship, Harmony of the Sea, is continuing on its seven-night journey.

The majority of shark attacks in the Caribbean have occurred in the Bahamas, with two reported in 2019, one of them fatal. That incident involved a Southern California woman who was on vacation and was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island, located just a half mile from where Tuesday’s attacked occurred.

In December 2020, a fatal shark attack was reported in the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin, the first such incident in that region.

Overall, at least 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749, followed by 13 attacks in Cuba during that time period, including one in 2019, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said that the high number of attacks in the Bahamas is likely linked to the fact that there are a lot of people in the water in that area and that it has a robust marine ecosystem.

He said the Bahamas has a variety of shark species, the majority of which do not pay attention to people, except for bull sharks and tiger sharks.

“They get to very large sizes, and they eat big prey,” Heithaus said, adding that sharks have incredible sensory systems and can be attracted to food, sounds and smells in the water.

But overall, shark attacks remain rare, he stressed.

Worldwide, there were 137 shark attacks last year, 73 of them unprovoked, according to the International Shark Attack File.

A shark attacked and killed a Pennsylvania mother on vacation in the Bahamas

A bull shark attacked and killed a 58-year-old mother of three from Erie, Pennsylvania, who was snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas, officials say.

The victim, Caroline DiPlacido, was employed at Gannon University, where, for 13 years, she worked as a project coordinator for Gannon’s Office of Community and Government Relations.

Police said the victim and her family had arrived in the Bahamas the morning of Sept. 6. They set out on a tour with a local snorkel excursion company that afternoon. The attack occurred while the group was snorkeling near Green Cay, in the waters northwest of Rose Island in the Bahamas.

During a press conference on Sept. 6, Royal Bahamas Police Force Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said that sometime around 2 p.m., DiPlacido's family witnessed her being attacked by a bull shark. They were unable to fend off the shark before it inflicted "serious injuries to the left side of her body."

Soon after the attack, DiPlacido's family and an operator of the excursion company pulled her aboard and took her to the closest docking facility.

Skippings said that emergency responders had come to the scene but “confirmed no vital signs of life” at the time.

Skippings added that they are investigating DiPlacido's death and that the particular beach where she was attacked had been closed off to any type of snorkeling activities. She did not know if or when it would be reopened.

On Sunday, Sept. 4, DiPlacido and her family took sail on a seven-night cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida. They sailed as guests with  Harmony of the Seas , a cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean confirmed the tourist's death in a statement provided to NBC News.

"While on an independent shore excursion in Nassau, Bahamas, a guest sailing on Harmony of the Seas experienced injuries from a shark," the statement reads. "After arriving at a local hospital for treatment, the guest passed away from their injuries. Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time."

In a statement to the campus community obtained by NBC News, Gannon University remembered DiPlacido.

“Along with her efforts to further the mission of Erie-GAINS and Our West Bayfront, Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students, and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon. The news is devastating, and she will be missed.”

The statement added, "Let us remember Caroline with affection and hope."

According to  National Geographic , bull sharks are typically known for living in high-population areas. Experts consider them to be the world’s most dangerous sharks.  They're able to live in both saltwater and freshwater, which enables them to migrate into river systems and estuaries.

Editor’s Note (Sept. 8, 2022, at 8 a.m. ET): This story has been updated to reflect the name of the woman killed by the shark, her place of employment and that she was a mother of three.

Woman from Boston killed in shark attack while paddle boarding in Bahamas

By Caitlin O'Kane

Updated on: December 5, 2023 / 5:38 PM EST / CBS News

A woman from Boston died after she was attacked by a shark while paddle boarding with a family member in the Bahamas on Monday, police said at a news conference. The woman and male relative were paddle boarding at a resort about three-quarters of a mile away from the shore when she was bitten by the shark, said Royal Bahamas Police Force spokesperson Sergeant Desiree Ferguson.

A lifeguard on duty who saw the incident went out in a boat to rescue the pair, Ferguson said.

"CPR was administered to the victim. However, she suffered serious injuries to the right side of her body, including the right hip region and also her right upper limb," Ferguson said.

The victim was declared dead after emergency responders determined she showed no vital signs. Bahamas police later said she was identified as 44-year-old Lauren Erickson Van Wart.

Fatal shark attack against a tourist at Sandals resort in Nassau

The attack comes just one day after a 26-year-old woman died after she was bitten by a shark in Mexico as she swam with her young daughter.

Shark attacks are rare in the Bahamas, but several have been reported in recent months.

Last month, a 47-year-old German woman went missing during a diving trip off West End, Grand Bahama, after encountering a shark, Reuters reported, citing police.

In June, a woman from Iowa was attacked by a shark while scuba diving in the Bahamas, resulting in her leg being amputated .

In September 2022, another tourist from the U.S. was killed by a shark in the Bahamas while snorkeling. The 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania was a passenger on the Harmony of the Seas cruise ship and was taking part in an excursion at a popular spot near Green Cay when she was attacked by a bull shark. She was transported to a local hospital, where she died.

More than 50 species of sharks are found along the East Coast and in the Caribbean Sea, including tiger, hammerhead and Caribbean reef sharks, according to NOAA.

According to the  International Shark Attack File , there were 108 alleged shark-human interactions in 2022 worldwide. The U.S. reported the most  confirmed unprovoked attacks  — 41 — with Florida being the state with the most at 16.

A guest on a Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas cruise was killed while on an excursion in the Bahamas Tuesday, according to a spokesperson for the company. According to NBC News , Royal Bahamas police said the guest was a 58-year-old Pennsylvania woman that had gone snorkeling with friends when a bull shark attacked her at about 2 p.m. at Green Cay.

Family members witnessed the attack and helped the tour operator pull her out of the water. CNN reports the woman has suffered injuries to her "upper extremities."

She had no signs of life after the attack and died before arriving at the hospital, the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

WICU , sourcing an Erie, Pennsylvania, university, identified the victim as Caroline DiPlacido. She was reportedly a project coordinator for the school's Office of Community and Government Relations, Erie Campus.

"Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students, and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon. The news is devastating, and she will be missed. We pray for Caroline as she crosses over to eternity. We pray for her husband, David, her children, David, Robert and Allison, her mother, Olivia, and her wider family. Let us remember Caroline with affection and hope," a statement from Gannon University reads.

The ship sailed out Sept. 4 from Port Canaveral. It was a seven-night cruise.

"It's just an unfortunate situation," Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said.

Skippings said DiPlacido's family identified the animal as a bull shark.

The area was roped off and closed indefinitely to snorkelers.

"Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest's loved ones during this difficult time," a statement from the cruise line said.

Officials say the death will not impact the Harmony of the Seas' itinerary, meaning it will not be returning early.

The majority of shark attacks in the Caribbean have occurred in the Bahamas, with two reported in 2019, one of them fatal. That incident involved a Southern California woman who was on vacation and was attacked by three sharks near Rose Island, located just a half mile from where Tuesday’s attack occurred.

Overall, at least 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749, followed by 13 attacks in Cuba during that time period, including one in 2019, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Shark attacks as a whole remain extremely rare. In 2021, there were 73 confirmed unprovoked shark attack cases worldwide.

Pennsylvania woman attacked and killed by a shark while snorkeling in the Bahamas

A close-up view of a bull shark.

By Madison Selcho

A 58-year-old woman was attacked and killed by a shark while snorkeling on a cruise vacation in the Bahamas. The woman, whose name was not released, was snorkeling off the coast of Nassau in Green Cay when she was attacked by a bull shark.

NBC News reported that the woman was a passenger on the Royal Caribbean ship Harmony of the Seas and was traveling with her family, who had planned to snorkel at a popular spot in the area, according to Royal Bahamas Police Force Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings.

CNN reported that eyewitnesses said they saw a shark attacking the woman and immediately went to help. By the time they got to her, the woman had suffered bites to her “upper extremities,” Skippings said.

Tour company workers and family members pulled the woman out of the water and rushed to the nearest dock, where paramedics began to treat her. The paramedics reported no vital signs of life as they got her to shore, brought her to the hospital and began to treat her, according to The Associated Press .

The cruise line made a statement after the attack, saying, “Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

The Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida reported that bull sharks are the most commonly known sharks to make unprovoked attacks on humans. The last recorded shark attacks in the Bahamas were two separate attacks reported in 2019 where one was attacked by Rose Island that is about a half mile from Green Cay.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said in an Associated Press phone interview that the high number of attacks in this region is linked to a high number of people in a “robust marine ecosystem.”

Heithaus explained that there are many different types of sharks that swim in those waters, but only the bull and tiger sharks really pay attention to people.

“They get to very large sizes and they eat big prey,” Heithaus said.

Heithaus also added that bull and tiger sharks are more likely to be attracted toward people through different factors including smells in the water, food and even sounds. Despite these factors, Heithaus also emphasized that shark attacks are rare.

According to the International Shark Attack File , there were 73 unprovoked shark attacks out of a total of 137 attacks last year.

Cruise Passenger Attacked, Killed By Shark While Snorkeling In the Bahamas

  • September 6, 2022

Royal Caribbean Group (RCL) confirmed Tuesday that one of its guests had been killed following a shark attack in the Bahamas.

Where the Shark Attack Took Place

Screen Shot 2022 09 06 at 8.25.15 PM

One family’s vacation was marred by tragedy when a 58-year-old woman was attacked by a bull shark while on a snorkeling excursion. The incident occurred at a popular destination known as Green Cay, just off the shore of Rose Island, at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. The woman was rushed to the hospital but did not survive the injuries she had sustained.

According to NBC News , approximately 5-7 other people were snorkeling with the unidentified woman. During a news conference, Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said that family members had witnessed the attack and helped to pull the victim from the water. She was then taken by boat to Fort Montagu Hospital.

shark

Bull sharks — which typically run between 7.5 and 11 feet in length — are naturally aggressive. Because they favor shallow, coastal waters (as do snorkelers), they are the type of shark most often associated with attacks on humans.

Royal Caribbean Offering Family Support

harmony of the seas

In confirming the news, Royal Caribbean said that the woman had been a passenger aboard Harmony of the Seas , which is in the midst of a seven-night sailing out of Port Canaveral, Florida. The cruise line indicated that the woman was on an independent shore excursion, meaning one that was not sold through or sanctioned by the line itself. This is, of course, not at all uncommon, as many cruise guests — no matter the destination — often make plans with independent contractors.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean Group added that they were “providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Passenger Dies in Shark Attack

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Passenger Dies in Shark Attack

The victim was snorkeling with her family when the horrific attack occurred.

(CNN) -- A cruise ship passenger from Pennsylvania died Tuesday after being attacked by a shark while snorkeling with her family in the Bahamas, authorities said.

The passenger, a mother in her 50s who was onboard the Royal Caribbean ship, Harmony of the Seas, was attacked in Green Cay, off the coast of Nassau, according to Royal Bahamas Police Force Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings.

While the cruise ship was docked in Nassau, the family booked an excursion with a local tour company that took them to a popular snorkeling area, she said.

Family members then saw a shark attacking the woman and rushed to her aid. The mother had suffered bites to her "upper extremities," Skippings said.

Operators from the tour company and family members were able the pull the woman onto the boat and rushed to the nearest dock, where paramedics responded and reported no vital signs of life, Skippings said.

“Royal Caribbean is providing support and assistance to the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time,” a statement from the cruise line said. Harmony of the Seas is currently on a seven-night cruise after sailing from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday.

The beach where the attack happened has been closed, authorities said, and the incident is under investigation.

Shark attacks remain  extremely rare . The odds of getting fatally attacked by the creature remain less than 1 in 4 million, according to the International Shark Attack File.

Last year, there were 73 confirmed unprovoked shark attack cases worldwide, including 47 in the United States, which has the most documented unprovoked bites in the world, according to the Shark Attack File.

It's unclear why sharks bite, but experts say many attacks are “ cases of mistaken identity ,” occurring under conditions of poor water visibility, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Many of the bites happen when humans are swimming in or near large schools of prey fish. Sharks may also bite because they feel threatened and are just trying to defend themselves.

A shark attacked and killed a U.S. cruise ship passenger who was snorkeling in waters around the Bahamas on Tuesday, according to authorities.

The incident involved 58-year-old Caroline DiPlacido from Erie, Pennsylvania, and occurred at a popular snorkeling spot near Green Cay in the northern Bahamas, police spokeswoman Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press.

“It’s unfortunate,” she said.

Skippings said the DiPlacido's family identified it as a bull shark.

Royal Caribbean International said in a statement to the AP that the person died after arriving at a local hospital for treatment and that the company is helping their loved ones. They said the guest was participating in an independent shore excursion in Nassau and had been sailing on Harmony of the Seas, which is on a seven-night trip after departing Florida on Sunday.

Myrtle Beach from Ocean Avenue

In December 2020, a fatal shark attack was reported in the French Caribbean territory of St. Martin, the first such incident in that region.

Overall, at least 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749, followed by 13 attacks in Cuba during that time period, including one in 2019, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

Michael Heithaus, a marine biologist at Florida International University in Miami, said in a phone interview that the high number of attacks in the Bahamas is likely linked to the fact that there are a lot of people in the water in that area and that it has a robust marine ecosystem.

Jordan Prushinski

But overall, shark attacks remain rare, he stressed.

Worldwide, there were 137 shark attacks last year, 73 of them unprovoked, according to the International Shark Attack File.

People spot haunting image after missing teen jumps off cruise ship into shark-infested waters

Cameron robbins was just 18 years old when he disappeared.

Viewers watching a video of a missing teenager jumping off a cruise ship believe they spotted a haunting detail in part of the clip.

It was more than a year ago now that Cameron Robbins went missing after going on a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate his graduation in May 2023.

Robbins, who was just 18 years old, joined several friends on board the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise on May 24, but Robbins never returned with the boat to shore.

The teen is believed to have jumped off the boat as a dare , and footage from the night actually captured the moment Robbins went overboard.

Robbins was last seen in dark waters before he completely vanished from view, sparking a huge search conducted by the US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

Authorities spent several days searching for Robbins, but he was sadly presumed to have died following the incident.

Cameron Robbins is now presumed dead. (WBRZ)

After the footage of Robbins came to light, viewers began to take a closer look and notice little details in the video.

A number of people express belief that a shark had been lurking right under the boat when Robbins jumped.

"The video doesn't lie, he was attacked by a shark and taken under," one claimed.

Another added: "You can see the shark to the left of the video."

A third viewer was adamant they 'saw the fin' in the short clip.

Raymond King, Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) Commodore, confirmed the area where Robbins jumped 'is really shark infested'.

Viewers think the image was that of a 'shark'. (Reddit/QuietWest3764)

"The probability of survival decreases significantly particularly if a person did not have on a life vest and particularly if a person is perceived to be intoxicated," he said.

"I can tell you that area where an individual reportedly jumped over, it's an area that is really shark infested as well."

Robbins was described by family, friends and loved ones as 'funny and kind-hearted'. He played baseball and was described as a ‘fierce competitor’ by his coach.

Speaking to WAFB, Kevin George, the University Lab School Director, said of Robbins' disappearance: “Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling. Extra counselors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news.

"Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well."

Man Who Jumped From World's Largest Cruise Ship Fell 90 Feet to His Death, Security Says

T he man who jumped from the world’s largest cruise ship last weekend fell a horrifying 90 feet to his death, sources onboard the ship said.

The male passenger, whose identity remains unknown, leapt from the running track on the fifth level of Royal Caribbean’s record-breaking Icon of the Seas.

The incident occurred on the first day of the week-long cruise, not long after the ship departed from Florida. The ship was only about 300 miles from Port Miami at the time of the jump.

Each deck of the enormous ship stands around 20 feet high, meaning the man’s fall stretched about 90 feet, a security team member told The NY Post upon the ship’s return to Miami.

Police met with staffers at the Miami docks, collecting statements and a copy of the surveillance footage of the man’s fatal jump.

The May 26 incident instantly triggered the overboard detection system, after which staffers and security quickly worked to rescue the passenger.

"We knew what had happened literally seconds after he hit the water. The protocol is that we're supposed to immediately make visual contact to see if we can spot him," a source said, adding that a security guard on staff saw the man jump via the camera feed from the ship deck.

"It's the captain's call whether to stop and turn around, and he did," he added.

Cruise Ship Crew Attended to Passenger’s Family After His Death

A security team then prepared a rescue boat and departed the ship to retrieve the overboard passenger from the ocean. Meanwhile, other security team members completed a scan of the water and notified the Coast Guard.

Back on board, staff transported the man to the medical bay, where he was pronounced deceased. His body was stored in the on-board morgue – equipped with eight drawers – until the ship returned to Florida.

The Icon of the Seas saw no further fatalities on its one-week voyage to Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas.

Loved ones of the deceased had the option to fly home if they wished. Most, however, chose to stay with their relative’s body on the ship.

A small group of 20 or so onboard held a memorial for the unnamed man. The remaining passengers enjoyed the cruise as normal for the rest of the week.

Caitlin Clark won’t be headed to the Paris Olympics, according to a person familiar with the decision.

The person, who provided the full roster to The Associated Press, spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because no official announcement has been made.

The decision was first reported by The Athletic.

Clark does have some international experience with USA Basketball at a younger level, but she couldn’t attend the national training camp in Cleveland after she was invited because she was leading Iowa to the Final Four. Clark finished her career as the NCAA’s Division I all-time scoring leader.

Clark, now a rookie with the Indiana Fever, has drawn millions of new fans to women’s basketball in her college career and also in her young WNBA career.

While Clark won’t be headed to Paris, the U.S. is expected to take five-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi for a sixth Olympics. Taurasi will be joined by Phoenix Mercury teammate Brittney Griner.

This will be Griner’s first time playing internationally since she was detained in a Russian prison for 10 months in 2022. She said she’ll only play abroad with USA Basketball.

Joining the pair will be Olympic veterans Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd and Chelsea Gray. Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young, who helped the U.S. win the inaugural 3×3 gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, also will be on the team.

A bunch of first-time Olympians will join the team with Alyssa Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu and Kahleah Copper. All three played on the American team that won the World Cup in Australia in 2022.

The U.S. women have won every gold medal in women’s basketball since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Taurasi, who turns 42 before the Paris Games, will break the record for most Olympics played in the sport of basketball. Five players, including former teammate Sue Bird, have competed in five.

The U.S. team will train together for a few days in Phoenix in July. Then its off to London for an exhibition game against Germany before heading to France.

The Americans will play Japan, Belgium and Germany in pool play at the Olympics.

Breaking news, canadian auto parts billionaire frank stronach, 91, arrested on sexual assault charges.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Austrian-Canadian auto parts billionaire Frank Stronach was arrested Friday on sexual assault charges covering decades, police said Friday.

Stronach, 91, was charged with five crimes including rape, indecent assault on a female, sexual assault and forcible confinement, Peel Regional Police said. He was released with conditions and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton, Ontario, at a later date, the police statement said.

Peel Regional Police Constable Tyler Bell said there is more than one accuser but declined to say how many.

Austrian-Canadian auto parts billionaire Frank Stronach was arrested Friday on sexual assault charges covering decades, police said Friday.

“Obviously, this is a high-profile case. Our special victims unit is bound to protect the victims and in doing so that’s why were are being vague,” Bell said. “There is more than one victim but we won’t confirm that number yet.”

A lawyer for Stronach didn’t immediately respond for a request for comment.

Police allege the sexual assaults occurred from the 1980s to as recent as 2023.

Bell said they are appealing for people to come forward if they have information or have been victims.

Stronach, who was born in Austria, became one of Canada’s wealthiest people by creating Magna in his garage in 1957 and building it into one of the world’s largest suppliers of auto parts.

He also founded The Stronach Group, a company that specializes in horse racing.

Police allege the sexual assaults occurred from the 1980s to as recent as 2023.

He made a brief foray into Austrian politics more than a decade ago and has been named to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest honors.

A Magna spokesperson said Stronach has had no affiliation with the company since relinquishing control in 2010.

“We have recently been made aware of the charges filed against Frank Stronach,” Dave Niemiec said in an email Friday evening. “Magna has no knowledge of the investigation or the allegations that have been raised beyond what has been reported in the media.”

Niemiec said the company would not comment further on the ongoing legal matter.

In 2018, Frank sued his daughter, two grandchildren and former business associate Alon Ossip for over $500 million in Ontario Superior Court alleging they mismanaged the family’s assets and conspired to take control of them.

Belinda Stronach, a former Canadian Member of Parliament, countersued her father, saying in a statement of defense that he lost vast sums of money on pet projects.

The case was later settled.
