Georgia in Winter: 10 Best Places to Travel for Snow & Sublime Scenery

Winter in Georgia has two major things going for it: Quiet cities and majestic snowy landscapes. If your timing is right, you can catch the ski season. Orthodox holiday traditions in January add to the atmosphere.

Tbilisi remains mild throughout the winter months while the regions vary from fairly frosty to firmly freezing, showcasing all manner of splendid winterscapes: Snow-capped mountains, frozen lakes, sugar-dusted villages, and more.

So while certainly not the best time to visit Georgia for, say, hiking or wild flowers or wine, winter (December-February) is a fine time to plan a city trip or mountain escape. If you’re thinking about travelling to Georgia in winter there are a couple of practical considerations to make when planning an itinerary , some of which I cover here.

In this guide, I’ll show you 10 wonderful places to visit in Georgia in winter and offer a few winter travel tips.

Four winter destinations in the country of Georgia.

Why visit Georgia in winter?

Starting with the obvious: Temperatures are a lot cooler in winter across the country, and winter is fairly dry in many parts of the country. Compared to hot and cloying summer, winter is altogether a more pleasant time to be outdoors in Tbilisi and Kutaisi particularly.

Winter is the off-season for most of the country, thus you’ll find accommodation prices are lower and there is less pressure on transportation. Some of the country’s best hotels offer nice deals over winter. The exception is the ski resorts (especially Gudauri and Bakuriani) where prices go up.

Some high mountain passes are closed in winter, making it challenging or impossible to visit very remote villages such as Omalo in Tusheti . But the majority of roads remain open, including the roads to Kazbegi and Mestia .

In fact, it’s the Caucasus mountains that make Georgia in winter truly special. Landscapes of snow-capped peaks, little villages with smoke billowing from chimneys and Svaneti’s tower houses wrapped in a blanket of powder are unforgettable.

Bagrati Cathedral and Kutaisi city in winter snow.

If you’re interested in skiing and snowboarding, winter is obviously the best time to visit the mountains. If not, there are plenty of other cold-weather activities on offer around the country, from sulfur baths to scenic train rides (read on for lots more ideas). Hearty Georgian cuisine is made for winter, and there’s nothing better than cuddling up at a cute wine bar on a chilly evening.

Finally, double holidays mean twice the fun! December 25 goes by without much fanfare in lieu of Orthodox Christmas, which falls 13 days later. December 31 is the biggest celebration of the holiday period , with a riot of fireworks in Tbilisi. Then you can witness beautiful Orthodox traditions over Christmas, Bedoba and Epiphany.

An Orthodox church in the snow in Gudauri, Georgia in winter.

How cold does it get in Georgia?

Georgia has an extremely diverse climate. Generally speaking, the eastern part of the country is drier and crisper, while the west is more tropical and humid.

Tbilisi remains relatively mild throughout the winter months, averaging 2-8 degrees Celsius during the day from December to February, and dropping down to 0-2 degrees overnight. The mercury rarely dips below freezing. Since there is no ice or sleet – and there are often blue skies over Tbilisi – the city is very pleasant and crisp in winter.

In the mountain regions and plains of southern Georgia, by contrast, winters are very frosty indeed. Popular mountain areas such as Svaneti, Racha and Kazbegi all see heavy snow from December onwards and below freezing temperatures. It can get as cold as -13 degrees Celsius in Mestia and January.

When does it snow in Georgia?

Every year there are typically two or three snowy days in Tbilisi, usually at the very end of winter or the start of spring. Don’t count on seeing snow in the capital: It’s a roll of the dice and even when it does snow, it’s washed away by evening. Sometimes it even snows in Batumi – but you have to be really lucky to see snow on the Black Sea coast!

See my photos of Tbilisi in snow on a rare heavy snow day in 2021.

If you want guaranteed snow, you’ll have to head to a higher altitude. Mestia, Racha , Kazbegi and Upper Adjara near Batumi are all snowy from December onwards. This year (2023) the snow came early to Gudauri and Svaneti, while November in Kutaisi was unusually chilly and wet.

Ski season usually runs from early to mid December until April, with the official opening dates for each ski resort subject to weather conditions.

In summary: If seeing snow in Georgia is your main priority, your safest bet is to visit the mountain areas between January and March, when snowfall is heaviest.

Winter holidays & festivals in Georgia

Here is a quick list of the main calendar dates in Georgia for winter. Note that December 25 is not a holiday – Christmas falls a week later on January 7. Some small businesses close up from December 31 until the first weeks of January, but you will always find plenty of restaurants/cafes/shops open over the holiday period, especially in the winter resorts.

  • December 20, 2023: Official start of the ski season in Gudauri (Goderdzi open from December 9)
  • December 15-January 7, 2023: Christmas lights & Christmas Markets in Tbilisi
  • December 31: New Year’s Eve
  • January 1: New Year’s Day (public holiday)
  • January 2: Bedoba (public holiday)
  • January 7: Orthodox Christmas Day (public holiday)
  • January 14: Orthodox New Year (public holiday)
  • January 19: Orthodox Epiphany (public holiday)
  • February 14: Lamproba (Svaneti)

Georgia in winter: Unforgettable experiences

10 best places to visit in winter in georgia.

While each of these 10 destinations are all terrific places to visit in Georgia at any time of year, I think they’re especially beautiful in winter.

Tbilisi is not on this list, but it’s my top choice of winter destination in Georgia – see here for my dedicated guide to visiting Tbilisi in winter .

1. Kazbegi – scenic drives & mountain magic

Mountains of Kazbegi in winter.

Under four hours by road from Tbilisi, Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is the best place to get a peek at the Greater Caucasus without venturing too far from the city.

The scenic Georgian Military Highway remains open throughout winter, making it easy to reach Kazbegi and visit a slew of winter-wonderful sights along the way, including Gudauri, Pasanauri and Sno Village . The views along this road in winter are nothing short of dazzling – I challenge you to resist the urge to roll the window down at every turn.

Nearby Gudauri takes the lion’s share of winter tourism thanks to its ski slopes. Kazbegi is quieter and much more tranquil by contrast. Some restaurants and cafes close for the winter, but you can always find something open. Venture up to Gergeti Trinity Church (it’s recommended to go by Delica in winter unless you have proper hiking gear) and spend an afternoon on the deck at Rooms sipping glint wine.

How to get to Kazbegi

See this detailed guide on travelling to Kazbegi from Tbilisi for budget-friendly and scenic travel options.

Where to stay in Kazbegi in winter

Rooms Kazbegi is my top choice for winter accommodation. The suites and lodge-like common spaces are super cosy, and the property features an outdoor hot tub and an indoor pool. See my full list of recommended Kazbegi accommodations here .

2. Gudauri – skiing & chalets

Kobi Gudauri ski lift with a view of Mount Kazbek.

An obvious addition to any list of places to visit in Georgia in winter, Gudauri is the country’s most popular winter resort and a tourist mecca. Skiing, snowboarding and heli-skiing on 64km of runs (serviced by 15 lifts and gondolas) are all available from mid-December onwards.

Gudauri is far from my favourite place, though: It can be crowded and overpriced during the season. But the scenery is admittedly awe-inspiring, I’ll give it that.

The Gudauri-Kobi Cable Car (pictured above) has some of the best scenery in the country, including epic views of Mount Kazbek.

If you’re skiing, go all out and stay at a fancy ski-in chalet . Otherwise, it’s much better to spend an hour in Gudauri on the way up to Kazbegi, where the winter vibe is more pleasant and accommodation far more reasonable.

Last year (2023/24), the ski season at Gudauri official started on December 20. Ski lifts were open from December 15 and operated until April 20.

This guide contains more things to do in Gudauri and my tips for skiing in Georgia .

How to get to Gudauri

See my detailed Gudauri transport guide for all the options, including transfers and public transport.

Where to stay in Gudauri in winter

Penthouse New Gudauri has ski-in access 50m from the main gondola. For something more laid-back, see the best cabins in Gudauri and Georgia here .

3. Borjomi & Bakuriani – hot springs, skiing & winter hikes

A railway cuts through the snow in Borjomi, Georgia in winter.

Located in southern Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Borjomi is one of many places in Georgia with natural hot sulfur pools. A trip to the open-air thermal baths is the perfect way to warm up in winter.

Bakuriani is the second most popular ski resort in Georgia after Gudauri. With 29km of slopes spanning all difficulty levels and 20 ski lifts, this is a snow bunny’s paradise. Elevations range from 1,600-2,700 metres above sea level. Ski season normally starts in mid-December.

Bakuriani sits on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Range in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus mountains. As you might imagine, the entire area is a winter paradise of ivory coloured trees and hoary hills.

Another must-do (and a big part of the reason so many people visit this area) is to ride the historic Kukushka Train, Georgia’s only scenic rail that runs from Borjomi up to the ski resort. The track delves into deep forest and is absolutely gorgeous in winter. Note: Unfortunately, the Kukushka train was put on pause in March 2020 and will not run for winter 2023/24.

The hills around Bakuriani offer some excellent opportunities for snowshoeing . This winter hiking expedition takes you to several points of interest on the Kukushka train line, including an abandoned sanatorium and a traditional Greek village. I will be trying it out for myself later this winter!

How to get to Borjomi & Bakuriani

See my detailed Borjomi transport guide and my Bakuriani transport guide for all the details, including information about the Tbilisi Borjomi slow train.

Where to stay in Bakuriani in winter

Run by the same crowd as Rooms Kazbegi, younger sister Rooms Kokhta has similar high-class winter lodge vibes and a gorgeous fit-out.

4. Svaneti – tower houses & majestic peaks

Tower houses in Svaneti in winter.

If you want a taste of a raw, rugged mountain winter in Georgia, it doesn’t get much better than Svaneti. Winter arrives early on Georgia’s highest peak and promises a good three months of snow-white landscapes that are almost too perfect to be real.

As a winter destination, Svaneti is quite diverse: Skiing and snowboarding are available at Hatsvali, Mestia town offers a range of cultural and historical attractions, and you can take a side trip to see the tower houses in UNESCO-Listed Ushguli (accessible throughout winter – go with a local driver who knows the roads). To top it off, Kubdari (Svanetian meat pie) might be the pinnacle of winter fare.

All this against a backdrop of the country’s most monumental mountains, with Shkhara and Mount Elbrus as snow-clad sentinels. Snow is visible on the highest peaks from as early as the end of September.

How to get to Svaneti

See my guide on travelling to Svaneti for a range of transport options from Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi and elsewhere in Georgia.

Where to stay in Svaneti in winter

Family Hotel Kala in Mestia has cosy rooms, an open fire in the common lounge, home-cooked meals, and oodles of Svan hospitality.

5. Bakhmaro – cat skiing & alpine air

Small wooden cottages in winter in Bakhmaro, Georgia.

Located in western Georgia’s Guria region , Bakhmaro is a beloved alpine resort praised for its curative air. Some say this is the purest air in Georgia – that’s why a trip to Bakhmaro is often prescribed to people with respiratory issues.

Summer is the favourite time to visit for dramatic sunsets. In winter, the air is a touch frostier to say the least. The storybook A-frame cottages that dot the mountain labour under heavy snow – up to 5 metres deep in a good year – enclosed by pockets of fir and pine tree forest.

Since the road up to the peak is closed in winter, Bakhmaro is only accessible by cat ski. Swiss-run company Cat Skiing Bakhmaro runs a limited season every year.

6. Lagodekhi – tranquil LANDSCAPES

Sheep cross a cold stream amidst snowy hills in Georgia's Lagodekhi National Park.

A hiker’s refuge in summer, in winter, Lagodekhi National Park takes on a completely different character. This little patch of warm, wet forest in arid Kakheti – located very close to the border with Azerbaijan – is all silvery rivers and vast swathes of snowy pasture in the cold months.

Seeking sanctuary from the harsh winter conditions in the mountains of Tusheti, herders bring their flocks down to pasture in Lagodekhi and Vashlovani in winter – hence why you’ll often see streams of sheep roaming the landscape at this time of year.

7. Javakheti – frozen lakes & snow-capped volcanoes

Frozen Paravani Lake in Georgia's Javakheti region.

Nicknamed the ‘Georgian Arctic’ for its long and harsh winters, this is one winter destination that’s only for the bold. Bitterly cold and unforgiving, Javakheti demands proper gear, snow tires, and a lot of grit. But if you’re brave enough, it’s one of the most distinct landscapes in Georgia and truly a sight to behold in winter.

The Javakheti Plateau stretches across the southern part of the country along the borders with Armenia and Turkey , and encompasses a handful of small jewel-like lakes interspersed by vast prairies and deep canyons.

Houses huddle together in small villages as if to share warmth, some buried under turf roofs to squeeze every drop of heat out of the earth. Other colourful villages on the lake’s shore are almost Nordic.

Roosting birds make off for warmer pastures as lakes Paravani, Saghamo and Bughdasheni freeze over. Ice crystals take up in every tree, while the surrounding meadows transform into fields of deep snow and the sleeping volcanoes in the distance gather powder on their crowns.

Also in this region, Vardzia Cave City takes on a completely unique appearance in winter as snow collects in its craggy rock cloisters.

8. Forest Sabaduri – fairytale landscape of frosty trees

Sabaduri forest, a snow-covered forest near Tbilisi.

Just an hour by road from Tbilisi , Sabaduri Forest is the ultimate winter playground and the place to go for photos frolicking over snow-glazed paths amongst powder-puff trees.

Find a quiet spot on the side of the highway that winds its way through Tbilisi National Park and wander off into a snowy paradise.

While you’re there, pay a visit to the Zoological Center , an ethical animal rescue shelter that is home to more than 20 Caucasian brown bears, and check out the incredible mosaics on the Tianeti Highway.

For a full guide to Sabaduri including the best day trips options, see my Sabaduri Travel Guide .

Half an hour further up the road, Sioni Lake looks pretty as a picture when mirroring frozen foliage. Nearby Martkopi Monastery, nestled deep in the forest, rounds out the ideal winter day trip from Tbilisi .

For a real winter treat, book a day trip to Sabaduri and Gudauri ski resort or a guided day trip to Sabaduri, Sioni and the nearby Chronicles of Georgian monument .

Sabaduri is also a wonderful spot to see fiery foliage during the autumn months .

9. Upper Adjara – serious skiing & sweet villages

A man holds a pair of skis in front of a wooden house in Georgia's Upper Adjara.

The highlands above Batumi wear their winter cloak so well. Sweet alpine villages such as Beshumi sport similar A-frame cottages to Bakhmaro and are gorgeous in winter.

Georgia’s third ski resort, Goderdzi, is located in this region and despite being smaller (there is just one gondola and 8.4km of slopes) is probably the most scenic. With fewer tourists, the atmosphere here is more intimate. The season typically runs from December to March.

The Powder Project also runs catski tours in Adjara. According to them, March is the best time to visit for fresh snow and sunny weather.

Goderdzi is four hours’ by road from Batumi. Conditions can be treacherous in winter so it’s best to travel with a local driver .

10. Kakheti – clear skies & frozen VINES

A lone tree stands in a frost-covered vineyard in Kakheti wine region in winter.

Most people suggest a trip to Kakheti in autumn during the Rtveli grape harvest . Having driven around Kakheti in February, I can tell you Georgia’s wine country is equally beautiful in winter – just in a different way.

The biggest advantage of visiting Kakheti in winter is clear skies. While haze obscures the view at other times of year (particularly in summer), in winter you can see all the way across the Alazani Valley to the Greater Caucasus.

Snow in Sighnaghi, Georgia.

While the vines look a little peculiar when totally bare and covered in frost, wine tastings are still available at many vineyards (just call ahead to check first). There are great deals at luxury hotels such as the Radisson Tsinandali (my personal favourite).

Dry, crisp weather is ideal for roaming the old walls in Sighnaghi or exploring the fortress in Telavi . If you’re lucky, you might even encounter snow in Sighnaghi – I don’t think there’s a more beautiful winter scene anywhere in Georgia.

Where to stay in Kakheti in winter

The stone house at Lost Ridge Inn outside Sighnaghi is super snug in winter, while there’s no beating the home-cooked meals and house wine or craft beer brewed on site. See my full list of Kakheti accommodations here .

What to pack for a winter trip to Georgia

In cities including Tbilisi, you can get by in jeans and a warm coat. If you’re venturing to the mountains, you’ll need waterproof shoes, thermals and all the woolly accessories you can get your hands on.

If you find you haven’t packed enough warm gear, it’s fairly easy to buy jumpers, gloves etc. either new or second-hand in any city or big town.

One important thing to note is that tumble driers are an endangered species in Georgia – everything is dried outside in the sun (as it should be) or inside by the heater during winter. I recommend bringing base layers that will dry quickly after washing.

See my all-season Georgia packing list for more tips.

Travel tips for winter in Georgia

  • If you plan on skiing or snowboarding and you don’t want to lug gear around with you, you can hire clothing and equipment at Gudauri or Bakuriani.
  • Central gas heating is fairly common in Georgia, but some accommodations use radiators. If you feel the cold, check ahead – and remember to pack plenty of warm layers for the evenings.
  • Plan your days (and transport connections carefully). The days are very short in winter and you don’t want to be on the road in a marshrutka van after dark.
  • If you plan on hiring a car , make sure you have all the appropriate equipment, including winter tires and tire chains if necessary.

Hi! Is it possible to go to Ushuguli in January?

Hi Yali – yes it is possible, as long as the road is open. Best to ask a local (e.g. your guesthouse) for the latest conditions.

nice blog very informative and helpful

We’re planning on travelling to Georgia next week. This blog is really helpful in planning our trip but I’m wondering whether a lot of the snow based activities might be available as I believe its still early for heavy snows? Is that true?

Hi James, there is a bit of snow already but the winter sports season doesn’t start until December/January.

hi is kushkusha train operating now

Hi Saeeda, it is not still operating and I haven’t heard any updates for this winter yet. I will update this post the moment things change.

Finding Snow in North Georgia — YOUR Southern Winter Wonderland

North GA Blogs - Winter Wonderland in North GA - Banner

Falling snowflakes are quite the sight in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, and rising peaks blanketed with snow are gorgeous in winter. Heading north of metro Atlanta, above Gwinnett and Clayton County, between December and February is your best chance to see snow in the State of Georgia. And places like Blue Ridge, Morganton, and Ellijay are great places to start your quest for a North Georgia snow experience. Plus, there are cozy cabins, winter events, and snow tubing opportunities as well!

North Georgia Snow — FAQ

Does North Georgia have snow? Yep! With winter temperatures ranging from below freezing at night in the mid-20s to mildly cold during the day in the low 50s, snow flurries do occur in North Georgia. Though it’s not common for snow to stick or accumulate significantly, winter storms can produce enough snow depth for a little snowy fun now and then. At best, you can expect occasional light snow and a bit of snow accumulation with the winter forecast for Blue Ridge weather .

How much snow does North Georgia get per year? Snow showers in North Georgia produce 1-4 inches of snow on average per year. That’s enough snowfall to enjoy watching with a cup of hot coffee and a mountain view. Or if you’re lucky, you can build a Southern snowman, with a little grass in his…derrière.

What is the snowiest town in Georgia? According to snow reports, the snowiest town in North Georgia is Mountain City, closely followed by Rabun Gap. Other snowy mountain towns in North Georgia include Sky Valley, Clayton, Blairsville, Hiawassee, Mineral Bluff, Young Harris, Blue Ridge, Morganton, and Suches.

Will snow prevent me from going on vacation in North Georgia?   Nope! If there’s a snow weather forecast for your Blue Ridge getaway, don’t worry too much. With wind gusts and dropping cold temperatures in North Georgia, the main concerns will be windchill, mixed precipitation, and roads icing overnight. So, bundle up, pack the cabin with food and essentials, and bring a vehicle with 4-wheel drive for added safety when traveling.

Is severe winter weather an issue in North Georgia? While severe weather in Georgia is most common in warmer months, it’s important to be prepared in winter, too. Please adhere to any winter weather advisory, wind advisory, or winter storm warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) and follow their guidelines. Georgia weather can be finicky, so be sure to check the 5-day forecast regularly.

Holly Jolly Jekyll is one of the best holiday events in Georgia. The event features activities like a light tour, holiday tea, breakfast with Santa, and more. Snow Mountain is the park’s winter event that goes until February. This is one of the only places in Atlanta where you can expect to regularly see snow, snow tube, sled, and build a snowman.

9. Cloudland Canyon State Park

Cloudland Canyon State Park is one of Georgia’s largest and most scenic state parks. Located on the edge of Lookout Mountain, this beautiful park features a gorge, two waterfalls, and 64 miles of hiking trails through the mountain wilderness.

Their waterfalls are especially gorgeous during the winter. Their flow is strongest in cooler months when the water doesn’t evaporate as quickly.

This state park also offers horseback riding, mountain biking, and caving opportunities. There are so many unique ways to explore this state park during the winter!

10. Lanier Islands

Just north of Atlanta, Lanier Islands is a resort complex on Lake Lanier, the largest lake in Georgia. Lake fun doesn’t have to be reserved just for summer; Lanier Islands proves it’s still a fun retreat in the winter.

The complex’s main holiday attractions are License to Chill Snow Island and Margaritaville’s Lakeside Lights Spectacular . Enjoy snow tubing, ice skating , snowball fights, and carnival rides at Snow Island. When the sun goes down, check out the dazzling display of holiday lights along the lake.

During the season, Lanier Islands has daily winter activities like a Reindeer Dash Scavenger Hunt, holiday crafts, gingerbread house building, story time with Mrs. Clause, and a visit from the Coca-Cola Polar Bear.

What the Winter Weather is Like in Georgia

What’s the weather like in Georgia during the winter? Winter weather in Georgia is pretty mild with temperatures averaging around 50 degrees. From December into February, you can expect daytime highs averaging around 50 to 60 degrees and evening lows around the 30s. Some evenings drop into the 20s.

The weather in South Georgia will be much warmer than in North Georgia. It’s very rare that South Georgia sees snow, but the North Georgia Mountains will often get wintery mix, ice, and even snow.

While North Georgia can see snow, Middle and South Georgia rarely get snow. So if you’re visiting Atlanta or Savannah, don’t expect a White Christmas.

If you go for a winter hike, temperatures in the higher elevations of the North Georgia Mountains are about 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the state’s average temperatures. Mountain hikes like Brasstown Bald may shut down their access roads due to ice in the winter.

The sunset in Georgia happens around 5:30 p.m. in November and January, around 5 p.m. in December, and around 6 p.m. in February.

For what to pack and wear during winter in Georgia, I recommend layers, a coat, a scarf, gloves, and boots. If you’re visiting the mountains, plan to pack winter jacket and boots. When packing your layers, keep in mind that you could be ice skating in short sleeves and 60 degree weather during the day but need a coat for the 40 degree nights looking at holiday lights.

Home Projects

I love spending the winter season focusing on home projects. Other than decorating your house for the holidays, you can begin new indoor projects to perfect your house! Last year, I completely repainted 2 rooms inside the house.

This year, I’m thinking of replacing each of my windows and doors on the exterior for a new look! To do this, I’ll utilize Saw Trax equipment for an easy installation process. Honestly, tools like this are so important when doing home renovations because they really make the entire process so much easier. The Dolly for Doors are great for staircases, window units, and more!

Your article absolutely inspires me to travel to Georgia in Winter. It has always been a dream to experience Winter in the United States being from Europe, there is just something about it. Even though I must say the Christmas markets here are pretty amazing! But as long as there is snow, I am happy! How sure are you of snow in Georgia?

10 places to visit in Georgia in winter (& travel tips)

places to visit in georgia for snow

Have you ever thought about visiting Georgia in winter?

Ski slopes without a soul on them. Wine bars and restaurants across the country throwing open their doors, welcoming travellers with their hearty cuisine. A hibernating Black Sea coastline brimming with the promise of Spring. The first rays of sunlight reach the hills around Tbilisi, not quite winter sunshine but definitely warmer than elsewhere on the continent.

This is Georgia in winter , and while it might not be the first destination you think of for a cooler season break, I’m here to tell you it’s well, well worth your time.

What’s Georgia in winter like?

There’s no denying that Georgia in winter is an entirely different experience to Georgia in summer .

While, in summer, wine festivals pulsate in the city and hiking trails crisscross the mountains, in winter, ski slopes open their doors, cities have an abundance of all-season attractions and Georgian spas look all the more welcoming.

The country certainly doesn’t sleep in winter – and lower prices, fewer crowds and a range of alternative attractions should attract any savvy traveller.

Weather in Georgia in winter

Georgia’s winter weather ranges wildly .

In Tbilisi, you’ll find mild temperatures – often warmer than other European capitals – thanks to its relatively southern location. The official temperatures are 0°C – 8°C in January, although it can be warmer (or colder).

The Black Sea area can see wet winter weather, but also warmer temperatures and blue skies. Expect weather of around 4°C – 11°C in January here.

Head to the mountains, however, and it’s a different story. Snowy, sub-zero weather prevails here. It was around 0°C when we were in Mestia in February, but in the weeks leading up to our trip temperatures dropped to around -15°C.

Places to visit in Georgia in winter

First up:  you can’t visit everywhere in Georgia in winter.

Some of the most remote areas are completely cut off from Autumn to Spring due to heavy snowfall, but all of the main tourist destinations and those in the lower areas of the city are accessible.

Here are the top places to visit in Georgia in winter (AND why you should add them to your list!).

places to visit in georgia for snow

Tbilisi is one of those cities with effervescent energy. It’s lively, no matter the time of year.

Most of its attractions – f rom museum-hopping to soaking in the sulfur baths to hiking around its viewpoints – are accessible in the winter months, although sometimes it depends on on what exactly the weather’s like.

On the last day of our recent winter trip to Tbilisi, it was gloriously sunny , the barometer hit 16°C, and we walked up in the hills (in early February!).

However, it can also snow in the winter months – although this is rare. Other days when we were in Tbilisi, the weather ranged from around 2°C – 10°C.

Things to do in Tbilisi in winter

  • Explore the Old Town , which dates back to the 5th century, either by a guided tour or independently.
  • Check out the Tbilisi leaning clock tower .
  • Soak in the sulfur baths – perfect when the weather’s chilly outside!
  • Go museum-hopping – the Museum of Georgia, Museum of Tbilisi and Tbilisi Wine Museum are all worth a visit.
  • Shop at the Dry Bridge Market .
  • Go wine tasting at one of the many wine bars .
  • Eat! Tbilisi’s restaurants are all open in the winter and they serve some of the most underrated food in the world.

Where to stay in Tbilisi

I’ve stayed in a few Tbilisi hotels on my trips to the city, but the best by far has to be the five-star Raddison Blu Iveria Hotel . With an incredible infinity pool overlooking the city and huge rooms (way bigger than normal Raddison Blu rooms!), it’s a luxe experience like no other. Click here to read more.

For a slightly cheaper alternative, Moxy Tbilisi is part of the funky Moxy by Marriott Brand, with a busy bar and quirky interior. Click here to read more.

Or, if you’re into boutique hotels, the Georgian-owned brand Rooms has a hotel in Tbilisi . I’ve not stayed here, but I’ve heard good things. Click here for more information.

“Batumi’s a four-season destination” we were told by the Adjara tourism board on our first day in the city.

The Las Vegas of the Black Sea is renowned for its casinos, but there’s much more on offer than meets the eye.

The city’s boasts futuristic architecture – jazzy skyscrapers soaring into the sky. It’s also a popular spot for gastronomy – the famous adjaruli kachapuri hails from here – and viticulture.

The area’s brimming with thousands of years of history , which you can explore through its museums and sites.

And, while the seawater might be cold, the weather’s prime for brisk Black Sea walks – or turn around, and you’ll see Adjara’s snow-capped mountains . There’s even skiing in Goderdzi a couple of hours away.

Things to do in Batumi in winter

  • Try the rich gastronomy of the city in restaurants like Bern
  • Sip on wine at Midi Wine Bar (they do wine tastings for 30 GEL!)
  • Visit the Batumi Museum of Archaeology
  • See the sprawling Gonio Fortress
  • Admire the modern architecture of Batumi
  • Take a walk along the Black Sea coastline

Where to stay in Batumi

There’s nowhere better than Rooms Hotels Batumi . This boutique hotel has quirky and contemporary interiors, with an excellent on-site restaurant. Plus, it’s only steps from the coastline. Click here to read more.

3. Tskaltubo

places to visit in georgia for snow

Fancy somewhere utterly unique? Tskaltubo’s a spa town like no other!

This town, situated near Kutaisi (Georgia’s second city) is renowned for its spas. But we’re not talking saunas and steam rooms here – instead, you’ll choose from a menu of Soviet-era therapies, including vacuums and electric shocks !

Tskaltubo was the biggest spa town in the USSR in Soviet times , but these days, it’s a shadow of its former self.

Abandoned spas and hotels are dotted around the city – some of these have actually been the home of refugees from Abkhazia, a region of Georgia that’s been occupied by Russia for the last 30 years ( more on that here ).

Nowadays, the spa scene in Tskaltubo is reviving , and while it’s got a long way to go to become as renowned as the UK’s Bath or Hungary’s Budapest, it’s a fascinating place where you can see old and new traditions merge!

Things to do in Tskaltubo in winter

  • Explore the unique spa treatments such as mineral water baths and radon treatments in a Soviet-era sanatorium setting. You’ll be prescribed your treatments by a doctor and it’ll be completely different to any other spas you’ve ever been to! Only two spas in Tskaltubo are still functioning; I’d recommend heading to Bathhouse Number Six for treatments.
  • Visit the Prometheus Cave near Tskaltubo; a cave with stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers.
  • Discover the abandoned sanatoriums ; we saw them on a day tour with Budget Georgia or check out Emily Lush’s fantastic guide to Tskaltubo for a self-guided tour.
  • Walk around the relaxed Tskaltubo Mineral Water Park .

Where to stay in Tskaltubo

Legends Resort is very dated, but historically, it’s fascinating. Apparently, Stalin used to stay here! It has vast grounds and looks out over the Mineral Water Park. There is a spa, although its opening hours are limited, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of breakfast. However, there aren’t that many options in Tskaltubo! Read more here.

Kutaisi, often heralded as the heart of Georgia and its second city, welcomes visitors with open arms throughout the year.

Renowned for its historical significance and natural beauty, Kutaisi is steeped in legend and lore.

Here, you’ll find the ancient Bagrati Cathedral and the enigmatic Gelati Monastery ; it’s commonly known as the “city of churches” thanks to its abundance of religious buildings.

Of course, this is Georgia, so you can bet there are some excellent restaurants! Imeretian cuisine is typically veg-friendly (my favourite starter, pkhali, comes from the region!) and uses fresh ingredients. The Imeretian wine region is the second largest in the country, too.

Then there’s the museums, culture and architecture that all come from the second city of Georgia!

Things to do in Kutaisi in winter

  • Marvel at the architecture of the Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery .
  • Savour the local flavours at Kutaisi’s traditional markets and restaurants .
  • Immerse yourself in history at the State Historical Museum .
  • Enjoy an evening of culture at the Kutaisi Opera House .
  • Explore the natural beauty surrounding the city , from riverside walks to national park excursions.

Georgia might be a lesser-known ski destination , but it’s slowly becoming a more-known secret amongst snowsports fans across Europe.

However, the slopes of Gudari , Georgia’s largest resort, are still quiet and welcoming to skiers of all levels.

There’s a network of slopes for the daytime, and plenty of apres ski at night !

Things to do in Gudauri in winter

  • Hit the slopes at one of Georgia’s best ski resorts , offering runs for all skill levels and breathtaking mountain views.
  • Experience heli-skiing .
  • Relax in mountain-side spas like Tsar Bani Spa Resort after a day in the cold.
  • Enjoy the buzzing après-ski scene – Gudauri comes alive after the sun goes down!

Where to stay in Gudauri

You don’t need to carry your skis when you stay at Gudauri Lodge , which boasts ski-in, ski-out accommodation! You’ll also find luxury rooms, a glorious hot tub overlooking the mountains and a restaurant with an extensive menu. Click here to read more.

6. Signaghi

places to visit in georgia for snow

Signaghi, affectionately known as the “ City of Love ” in Georgia, is ever-popular in the summer – but int he winter, you might just have these streets all to yourself!

Located on a hilltop with stunning views of the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains, Signaghi’s cobblestone streets and quaint houses are even more enchanting with a dusting of snow – while the white stuff’s never guaranteed, it snows more here than in Tbilisi.

Despite the chill, Signaghi’s heartwarming hospitality remains undimmed.

Cosy wine cellars invite you to taste the local vintages, which are an integral part of Georgia’s winemaking heritage.

Signaghi is in the heart of the Kakheti wine region , and winter is an ideal time to delve into this aspect of its culture without the crowds of the peak seasons.

Then there are city walls and museums to explore – it’s the perfect day trip from Tbilisi!

Eat This! Tours offer winter wine tours to the Kakheti region, including a stop in Signagi – check them out here .

Things to do in Signaghi in winter

  • Wander the snow-laden streets of the town.
  • Explore the Signaghi City Walls for panoramic views of the snow-capped Caucasus.
  • Delve into Georgia’s winemaking tradition with cellar tours and tastings.
  • Visit the Signaghi Museum to explore Georgian art and history.

Kazbegi assumes a surreal beauty in winter. This region, also known as Stepantsminda , is renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery, epitomized by the iconic Mount Kazbek looming majestically over the town.

Thanks to its high-altitude location, Kazbegi is blanketed in snow throughout much of the winter months. The town is close to Gudauri for skiing, although some winter sports opportunities are avaliable from the town itself.

One of Kazbegi’s most revered sights is the Gergeti Trinity Church , situated high above the town against the backdrop of the towering Caucasus. It’s harder to get here in the winter, thanks to the snow, but it looks even more stunning!

Though the temperatures may be chilly, the warmth of Georgian hospitality is ever-present in Kazbegi!

Things to do in Kazbegi in winter

  • Go snowshoeing in the surrounding mountains.
  • Visit the Gergeti Trinity Church , an iconic symbol of Georgia.
  • Warm up at Rooms Hotel , which has a glorious balcony looking over the mountains.
  • Stop on the way at places like the Ananuri Fortress and Russian-Georgian Friendship Monument .

Where to stay in Kazbegi

There’s nowhere better than Rooms Hotels Kazbegi . I’ve only been here for a drink, but the hotel is gorgeous and the pictures of the inside look incredible. Click here to see what I mean!

A woman in a knit hat enjoys a drink while relaxing in an outdoor wooden hot tub amid a snowy pine forest.

The region of Svaneti is a winter paradise, there’s no doubt about it.

The streets of Mestia and Ushguli are covered in snow for six months out of the year, the ski slopes are all but abandoned and Papas Qel Sauna is particularly magical in colder weather.

Plus, despite the heavy snow, life goes on as normal in Svaneti and the museums and cultural activities are still accessible (due to the region’s isolation from the rest of Georgia, it has a unique culture, customs and language).

However, after our trip to Svaneti in the winter, I do have to put a disclaimer about the weather. We were unlucky on the Mestia to Jvari mountain road and experienced the worst snowstorm in 20 years , and ended up caught in avalanches !

It’s not usually that bad, but from my experience, I’d strongly advise against travelling on this road in snowstorms or poor weather.

You can read more about my experience visiting Mestia in winter in this post.

Things to do in Svaneti in winter

  • Venture to the Hatsvali Ski Resort , offers fantastic skiing with fewer crowds than other Georgian resorts.
  • Explore ancient Svan towers and villages blanketed in snow, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich history and traditions.
  • Visit the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography in Mestia to learn about the unique cultural heritage of this remote region.
  • Relax in Papa’s Qel Sauna (close to Hatsvali).
  • Take a culinary masterclass at Lali’s Guesthouse in Latali.

Where to stay in Svaneti

Mestia is the largest town in the region, and we stayed at Hotel Paliani .

It was friendly, with comfortable rooms and helpful staff, although didn’t have the spa facilities that Hotel Posta in town had. Click here to read more about Hotel Paliani and here to read more about Hotel Posta .

9. Uplistsikhe

places to visit in georgia for snow

Uplistsikhe is an easy day trip from Tbilisi. This ancient city carved from rock dates back more than 3,000 years!

Uplistsikhe is a sprawling complex of caves, tunnels and halls , telling tales of a time when it stood as a bustling hub on the Silk Road .

Dive deep into history as you wander through more than 700 caves.

From grand halls that once echoed with royal gatherings to intimate pagan temples hidden within the earth, every corner of Uplistsikhe holds a story.

As you explore, you’ll notice a fascinating blend of Pagan and Christian symbols which shows how the city adapted over time.

The highlight? The 10th century church , standing proud at the complex’s highest point, with views that stretch on for miles.

The easiest way to see Uplistsikhe is on a guided tour from Tbilisi , which will also go to Mtskheta and Gori (Stalin’s home town). Click here to see a highly-rated tour.

10. Mtskheta

places to visit in georgia for snow

A short drive from Tbilisi, you’ll find Mtskheta, which is known as the “Jerusalem of Georgia” .

Situated at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, Mtskheta is a living museum.

As you wander through this UNESCO World Heritage site, you’ll be surrounded by stunning examples of early Christian architecture.

The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral stands tall, a beacon of Georgian faith, where legend has it the Christ’s robe is buried!

Then there’s the Jvari Monastery, which is perched on a hilltop and boasts panoramic views of Mtskheta below.

Things to do in Mtskheta in winter

  • Visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
  • Tour Jvari Monastery
  • Wander the charming streets of Mtskheta’s Old Town .
  • Visit the local Mtskheta Museum to learn more about the region’s history and cultural significance, an ideal indoor activity for colder days.

The easiest way to see Mtskheta is on a guided tour from Tbilisi , which will also go to Uplistsikhe and Gori (Stalin’s home town). Click here to see a highly-rated tour.

What to pack for Georgia in winter

A smiling woman in winter clothing with a picturesque backdrop of snow-covered mountains in Mestia, Georgia.

Your Georgia winter packing list largely depends on where you’re going!

If you’re sticking to Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi and surrounding areas I’d recommend the following (along with all your usual clothes and personal items):

  • a few pairs of long pants/ trousers
  • waterproof jacket
  • 2-3 jumpers for layering
  • comfortable shoes
  • hat, scarf and gloves for cooler days

Basically, anything that you’d pack for say, Paris or London in winter .

If you’re venturing into the mountains, you’ll need a bit more gear.

I’d recommend packing the following (along with your usual clothes and personal items):

  • Waterproof trousers and jacket. A ski jacket and salopettes is probably your best bet.
  • Thermal leggings and tops
  • Warm jumpers
  • Thick socks
  • Shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof gloves and a thermal hat
  • Battery pack (I’d recommend this anywhere, but in the cold, you might find your phone battery drains quicker)

So, if you head to one of the areas in Georgia that usually sees snow in winter, don’t be disappointed if you miss out. Weather patterns are one thing, but sometimes snow just isn’t meant to be!

Does it snow in Georgia? Here’s everything you need to know!

The simplest answer to the question “does it snow in Georgia?” is “yes”.

Sure, it’s never that simple, but even the mild temperatures in Georgia can produce snow. It’s worth noting that if you’re in the northern parts of the state, you’re more likely to see snow than those based in southern areas.

Unfortunately, you’re more likely to see frozen, slushy rain than full-on snow in Georgia. We get that you’re here to find an answer to the question “does it snow in Georgia”, so we get that this might be disappointing.

If you’re in the right areas though, you can still see wonderful snow. For example, the mountainous areas of Georgia can see around 18 inches of snow each year which is certainly impressive!

If you’re worried about proper blizzards in Georgia, then you’ll probably be fine! The last recorded state blizzard was in March 1993, so you’re unlikely to be caught up in one anytime soon.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to be prepared, but a blizzard is unlikely to ruin your travel plans – so, don’t stress too much!

You may see smatterings of snow between February and April, but we highly recommend visit Georgia during December or January to experience the best of the festive season.

If you struggle with the cold, then we’re pleased to say that the average temperatures in Georgia average around 50 degrees Fahrenheit or so.

This isn’t overly cold, so if you’re wondering “when does it snow in Georgia?” and are concerned about temperatures plummeting, you should be able to get by without any excessive shivering!

Those looking to visit Georgia during ski season should be good to go between the months of November to April.

You may be surprised by this, but up in the mountainous regions, you can see decent snowfall during the entire winter period.

Not only is Atlanta the state capital of Georgia, but it’s our favorite answer to the question “where does it snow in Georgia?”.

Seeing an average of 2.9 inches of snow each year, this is an excellent place to visit for any traveler who wants to catch snow during their visit to Georgia.

Although this isn’t the city in Georgia with the highest elevation, it still stands at 1050 feet or so. This means it often experiences freezing temperatures.

Now, before you get too excited, Atlanta doesn’t see guaranteed snow each year, but it’s a great place to visit during winter .

However, there’s so much to do here that you genuinely won’t mind. Offering visitors everything from a gorgeous botanical garden to a state-of-the-art aquarium, you’ll quickly forgive the weather gods if you don’t manage to see any snow in Georgia.

If you’re looking for things to do in Athens, why not visit the Georgia Museum of Art or the Athica Athens Institute? Athens is well-known for its art scene, so you should certainly add both spots to your to-do list.

Blairsville

Blairsville is one of the best places to visit for snow in Georgia. Although it’s a small city (it has a population of only 724!), it has plenty to offer visitors.

Be aware that it can get extremely cold in this little haven. With temperatures dipping as low as 25.4 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter, you should plan for bitter cold.

Generally, Blairsville sees around 6 inches of snowfall each year, but this can vary based on weather patterns. Who knows, maybe you’ll be blessed with an immense amount of precipitation during your visit!

Those visiting Blairsville should explore the Mountain Life Museum and Grandaddy Mimm’s Distilling Co.

Although these attractions are quite different, they’re two of the most popular things to do in the city that shouldn’t be missed. Another beautiful place to experience snow in Georgia.

If you’re asking, “where does it snow in Georgia?”, you needn’t look further than Dalton.

Although this city won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, it tends to see decent levels of snow each year.

Like most other Georgian cities, predicting exact snowfall can be tricky. However, on a typical year you can expect to see 2 inches of snowfall during the winter months.

We get that this isn’t a massive amount, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t manage to catch any flurries during your visit.

If you’d like to hit some attractions while in Dalton, we suggest checking out the Chief Vann House Historic Site and Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel.

The Best Things to See and Do in Georgia in Winter

The Gergeti Trinity Church sits on the slopes of the majestic Mount Kazbegi in Georgia

Winter in Georgia is cold and snowy, with an average temperature of 2-4C (36-39F) – some regions even fall below zero sometimes. For those who love visiting snow-covered cities, Tbilisi will be a disappointment. However, there are other towns across the country that see snow in winter. From spas to skiing, here’s our pick of the best things to see and do in Georgia during your winter break.

Explore the capital.

Even though Tbilisi is not as appealing in winter as it is in other seasons, visiting during this time of year is still worth it. If the weather is a bit warmer, embark on a walking tour to admire the famous landmarks in the city – which you can do with Culture Trip in the company of a local expert on our specially curated nine-day Georgia adventure . Make sure to stroll down Rustaveli Avenue and explore the beautiful architecture of the Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Rustaveli Theatre.

Take in the landmarks of Tbilisi, such as the Opera and Ballet Theatre, on a walking tour

Visit a traditional spa

Tbilisi is known for its sulphur bathhouses located in the Abanotubani district. The mineral-rich hot springs feeding the baths are good for your skin and overall health. If you get cold walking around the city, you can pop into one of the many houses that offer different price packages for however long you’d like to indulge. These baths are not public baths – you’ll get a private room and can even ask a masseuse to scrub your back.

Interested in visiting? You can experience them for yourself as part of Culture Trip’s immersive small-group Georgia tour .

Visit various museums in Tbilisi

Tbilisi has a good selection of museums hidden throughout the city. If you’re interested in history, culture, art, artists and even Soviet rule in Georgia, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the depth of knowledge these museums have. The entrance fees are minimal here, so you won’t break the bank if you decide to visit all the museums in the city.

Wander through snow-covered Vardzia

In southern Georgia, you’ll find Vardzia, a cave monastery featuring different shrines, churches and beautiful frescoes . While this 12th-century landmark is quite beautiful year-round, it’s gorgeous when it’s covered in snow.

Vardzia dates back to the 12th century

Go to Gudauri for a weekend ski trip

Gudauri is one of the most popular destinations for skiers in Georgia. As it’s close to Tbilisi, the ski resort makes for a great weekend getaway; however, be ready for crowds. The resort features more than 60km (37mi) of slopes of varying difficulty for skiers and snowboarders. Also, you’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the Caucasus Mountains while skiing. For those who don’t like overcrowded places, Georgia is home to other ski resorts as well.

Gudauri attracts skiers and snowboarders of all levels

Enjoy a cup of your favourite beverage overlooking Mount Kazbegi

If skiing is not your cup of tea, you can go to the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi in Stepantsminda town, not far from Gudauri, for picturesque views of Mount Kazbegi (also known as Mount Kazbek). Alternatively, if you like combining leisure with culture, go on a small hike towards the Gergeti Trinity Church, right at the foot of the mountain.

Try heli-skiing

Extreme sports lovers can glide down pristine slopes that see few tracks from other skiers. With Gudauri’s heli-skiing packages, you can be the only one on the slopes all day. To make it even more appealing, compared to other European cities that offer heli-ski experiences, Gudauri is much more affordable for both beginners and professionals.

Take skiing to the next level by booking a heli-skiing trip

Stay above the clouds

In the Svaneti region, Zuruldi describes itself as the highest restaurant and hotel in the country, sitting on top of the mountain of the same name. At 2,340m (7,677ft) above sea level, this hotel guarantees a unique and unforgettable experience. To reach this destination, you’ll have to travel to Mestia , the main town in Svaneti, and take a minibus or rent a car from there. Then, you’ll have to take the Hatsvali ropeway to the property.

Ride the Kukushka

The Kukushka is a railway train that travels from Borjomi to Bakuriani, another famous ski resort in Georgia. The ride provides marvellous views of the snow-covered spruce forest, and you’ll pass over the bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, constructed by order of the Romanovs.

The Kukushka travels between Borjomi and Bakuriani

Visit a frozen lake

The volcanic Paravani Lake lies 2,073m (6,801ft) above sea level and is the biggest lake in the country. Even though it’s beautiful all year round, the best time to visit the lake is during winter when it freezes and is surrounded by heavy snow – it looks like a winter wonderland.

Ski enthusiasts will find everything and more in Georgia’s numerous ski resorts. The well-developed infrastructure, sharp variations in altitude and unlimited possibilities for freeride, back country and heli-skiing in Gudauri, Bakuriani, Svaneti or Goderdzi will leave even experienced skiers satisfied.

The Capital Tbilisi in Winter

The capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, remains vibrant all year long. The winter season only seems to heighten its allure, particularly for patrons of the arts and those who wish to celebrate the New Year in style. In between professional opera and ballet performances, rousing traditional dance shows and concerts galore, unwind with a hot sulphur bath and a stroll through the capital’s festively decorated streets leading up to the New Year.

On a winter tour, you can warm up with a sip of Georgian wine , learn how to prepare and eat traditional khinkhali dumplings, or wander the numerous cathedrals and cave towns whose beauty will only be accentuated in the crisp winter snows.

GEORGIA IN WINTER: GREAT EXPERIENCES

places to visit in georgia for snow

Winter in Georgia has two major things going for it: Quiet cities and majestic snowy landscapes. If your timing is right, you can catch the ski season. Orthodox holiday traditions in January add to the atmosphere.

Tbilisi remains mild throughout the winter months while the regions vary from fairly frosty to firmly freezing, showcasing all manner of splendid winterscapes: Snow-capped mountains, frozen lakes, sugar-dusted villages, and more.

Why visit Georgia in winter?

Starting with the obvious: Temperatures are a lot cooler in winter across the Georgia, and winter is fairly dry in many parts of Georgia. Compared to hot and cloying summer, winter is altogether a more pleasant time to be outdoors in Tbilisi and Kutaisi particularly.

Some high mountain passes are closed in winter, making it challenging or impossible to visit very remote villages such as Omalo in Tusheti. But the majority of roads remain open, including the roads to Kazbegi and Mestia.

In fact, it’s the Caucasus mountains that make Georgia frosty season truly special. Landscapes of snow-capped peaks, little villages with smoke billowing from chimneys and Svaneti’s tower houses wrapped in a blanket of powder are unforgettable.

Georgia in winter: Skiing lovers paradise

If you’re interested in skiing and snowboarding, snow season is obviously the best time to visit the mountains. If not, there are plenty of other cold-weather activities on offer around the country, from sulfur baths to scenic train rides.

December 31 is the biggest celebration of the holiday period, with a riot of fireworks in Tbilisi. Then you can witness beautiful Orthodox traditions over Christmas, Bedoba and Epiphany.

How cold does it get in Georgia?

Georgia has an extremely diverse climate. The eastern part of the country is drier and crisper, while the west is more tropical and humid.

Tbilisi remains relatively mild throughout the winter months, averaging 2-8 degrees Celsius during the day from December to February, and dropping down to 0-2 degrees overnight.

If you want guaranteed snow, you’ll have to head to a higher altitude. Mestia, Racha, Kazbegi and Upper Adjara near Batumi are all snowy from December onwards.

In summary: If seeing snow in Georgia is your main priority, your safest bet is to visit the mountain areas between January and March, when snowfall is the heaviest.

Where Europe and Asia grind up against each other, magical Georgia sits on the southern slope of the Great Caucasus mountain range, whose snowcapped peaks run from the Black Sea to the Caspian.

Though relatively small in terms of area, Georgia offers a huge variety of scenery and activities, and its mountainous landscape and limited transport infrastructure combine to make getting about more time-consuming than you might imagine. While there’s no need to limit yourself to just one region, you’re best off deciding what kind of trip you want to have, and then choosing a few parts of the country to focus on.

To help you do that, here are some of the very best places to consider including in any itinerary.

Colorful traditional houses with wooden carved balconies in the Old Town of Tbilisi, Georgia

Best place for urban pursuits

Quickly beguiling anyone who visits , the Georgian capital offers up a fascinating Old Town, a wealth of avant-garde Soviet architecture, traditional sulfur baths, and an extraordinary array of medieval churches. Spread out along the narrow valley of the Mtkvari River, Tbilisi is the kind of place you have to get up high to really appreciate – try taking the cable car to the Sololaki ridge where you’ll find the Narikala Fortress and iconic Mother Georgia (aka Kartlis Deda) . You can also take the funicular to the city’s highest point, Mtatsminda , where, on top of stellar city views, you also get a campy fairground and a huge Ferris wheel.

Tbilisi is also the best place in Georgia to eat out, drink wine and go partying, with dozens of innovative menus available at establishments such as Barbarestan , Azarphesha , Alubali and Keto & Kote . This is also one of the best places in the country to sample a range of Georgia’s famous wines and take part in its thumping nightlife.  Tbilisi offers you plenty to keep you entertained for days, but can also serve as a base from which to do day trips to various other parts of central Georgia.

Planning tip: Book at least a week ahead for the best Tbilisi restaurants in the summer months.

Crowds of people are relaxing on a pebble beach on a sunny day

Best city on the Black Sea

Batumi , Georgia’s second city, is the subtropical yin to Tbilisi’s yang, with its beachfront location, charming Old Town, seemingly endless seaside esplanade and an ever-growing number of glitzy skyscrapers – Georgia’s answer to Dubai, locals will tell you with a grin.

The city is built for pleasure, and functions as Georgia’s unofficial temporary capital during the height of summer, when most of Tbilisi's locals decamp en masse to the Black Sea’s beaches for sunshine, cocktails and partying on the seafront. Georgia’s best beaches can be found to the south of the city, between Batumi and the Turkish border. Inland, the autonomous Adjaran region offers wonderful rafting and hiking, as well as the famously rickety cable car in Khulo.

A group of people are paddling a raft along a blue-green river in a canyon

Best base for exploring nature

Sleepy Kutaisi  has found itself relegated to Georgia’s third-largest city in recent years as coastal Batumi booms. But this ancient town, which may once have been home to the golden fleece of Greek legend, has nonetheless managed to establish itself as the center of Georgia’s burgeoning tourist industry .

The nearby David the Builder Airport brings dozens of low-cost airline flights to Kutaisi from all over Europe each week, and there are dozens of hostels and a competitive short-term apartment rental market. Not only is Kutaisi bang in the center of the country (making it a more obvious base than either Tbilisi or Batumi), but it’s also surrounded by a wealth of sights, natural wonders and diverse attractions including the Martvili Canyon , Okatse Canyon , the Gelati Monastery and two astonishing relics of communism, the towns of Tskaltubo and Chiatura.

A monastery in Georgia sits atop a hill, with incredible snowy mountains in the background.

4. Stepantsminda

Best for easy access to the High Caucasus

The extraordinary Georgian Military Highway takes you to the town of Stepantsminda (still commonly referred to by its Soviet-era name, Kazbegi), on the border with northern neighbor Russia. Though the epic journey here has lost some of its charm in recent years (it's become a busy truck route for imports to Russia), there is no denying the incredible setting of the town, not least the iconic silhouette of the hilltop church  Tsminda Sameba against the glacier of Mt Kazbek. It's truly a sight that never ceases to amaze, despite its reproduction on a million postcards.

Planning tip: Head to Tsminda Sameba Church first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is better, and – crucially – when you’ll not have to share this magical spot with the crowds.

A remote mountain village is surrounded by steep hills and mountains, and there's a variety of different buildings including unique stone towers.

Best mountain scenery

Georgia’s mountains are extraordinary and jaw-dropping wherever you encounter them. But if you want to see the best scenery in the country, there’s nowhere that can compete with the ancient and mysterious region of Svaneti. As well as Georgia’s highest peak, Shkhara (5068m; 16,627ft), which towers over the wonderful highland village of Ushguli, there is almost limitless potential for hiking here, not least the now well-known Mestia to Ushguli four-day hike, which allows you to sleep each night in a different village.

Planning tip: You can skip the taxing eight-hour drive to Svaneti from Tbilisi and get there in under an hour by taking one of the affordable daily flights to Mestia with  Vanilla Sky .

A mountain escarpment with caves, tunnels and dwellings carved into the rock. There's a river valley in the background.

Best monastery

In a country with more than its fair share of staggering monasteries and churches in perilously remote places, Vardzia  is unquestionably the most magnificent of the lot. Its 13 floors are hewn into a cliffside and boast no fewer than 13 churches among its 400-plus rooms. The monastery’s jaw-dropping setting in a dramatic river valley makes it a real showstopper, and the undulating drive to get here from Akhaltsikhe is a wonderful treat to boot.

A wine shop has shelves filled with different varieties of Georgian wine; the walls behind the shelves are covered in graffiti-style writing.

7. Sighnaghi

Best place to enjoy Georgian wine

There’s magic in the air in Sighnaghi , and that’s not just down to its high altitude and the vertiginous views it affords into the vast valley below. This hilltop delight has more than a hint of Tuscany about it, with its terracotta roofs, cobbled streets and enviably slow pace of life.

Take a walk along the incredibly well-preserved city walls and visit the town museum, which has one of the best collections of paintings by Georgia’s most famous artist, Niko Pirosmani. Then settle in at one of Sighnaghi’s many wine bars to sample the result of the grape harvest in the country’s premier wine-producing region.

Planning tip: Call ahead to enjoy a delicious, organic lunch at the Lost Ridge Inn , just a few kilometers outside Sighnaghi.

An ancient monastery stands on a hilltop; two rivers meet in the valley below, and there's a town on the opposite riverbank.

8. Mtskheta

Best place for a spiritual experience

So close to Tbilisi that the sprawling capital’s suburbs threaten to engulf it, Mtskheta enjoys a magical setting at the picturesque confluence of two rivers. It was also the location of one of Georgia’s most important historical events – its conversion to Christianity at the hands of St Nino in the 4th century. That vital event, which still forms a huge part of Georgian national identity, is memorialized in the Jvari Church , Georgia’s holy of holies, which commands terrific views over the town from its soaring hilltop location. Meanwhile, down in the town itself is the stunning 11th-century Svetiskhoveli Cathedral , an architectural gem of Georgia’s early Golden Age.

Planning tip: You only need a couple of hours to see Mtskheta, and its location just northwest of Tbilisi makes it an obvious pit stop on any journey up to Stepantsminda or west towards Kutaisi.

A light-blue pergola over a spring water fountain in the spa town of Borjomi in Georgia

Best spa town

There’s more than a little touch of the Russian empire about this glorious 19th-century spa town tucked away amid the thickly wooded hills of the Lesser Caucasus. Borjomi’s salty-sour mineral water is Georgia’s most famous export and is instantly familiar to almost anyone from the former Soviet Union. However, the elegant resort town that produces it is worth a visit even if you’ve never heard of its eponymous sulfurous water.

As well as visiting the sprawling Borjomi Central Park (once you get past the tacky rides and children’s entertainments it opens up into a gorgeous riverside walk that brings you to a trio of delightful thermal pools), you can use the town as an excellent base for hiking in the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park , and take the small gauge railway line to the nearby alpine resort of Bakuriani.

  • 2024's 9 Most Adorable Small Towns in Georgia

So named after King George II of England , the state of Georgia is home to some of the most adorable small towns this 2024. Beyond the major cities of Atlanta and Savannah, you can enjoy the paradisical beauties of Tallulah Falls or the cultural aptitudes in Dahlonega. Notwithstanding the historic hallmarks Georgia has contributed to the world, like the invention of Coca-Cola and the Civil Rights Movement , there are other epochs and episodes that can only be learned from the small towns in which those moments transpired. You will be soaking in memorable experiences in towns like Darien and Brunswick, which are near the Golden Islands of Georgia. Most importantly, you will be enamored by 2024’s most adorable small towns in Georgia for their unique attractions and other surprises.

Two young boys fishing in Darien, Georgia

Dare to explore the adorable small town of Darien , a nature-lovers destination only 17 miles away from Brunswick. In 1733, highlanders from Scotland settled on the Altamaha, a marshy region around the Altamaha River that the Gullah-Geechee clan once owned. These highlanders built Darien to be one of Georgia’s oldest cities. During the American Revolutionary War and American Civil War , Darien was a pivotal port and sanctuary that the Fort King George Historic Site exemplifies—a military outpost that General James Edward Oglethorpe, the same man who founded the whole of Georgia, erected.

Today, Darien is a convenient gateway to some of Georgia’s most beautiful and historically significant islands called the Golden Isles of Georgia , such as Sapelo Island and Little St. Simons Island. History enthusiasts can tour the Butler Island Plantation for the ongoing rice production that has fed Darien and Georgia for generations. Feel free to observe the masterful artworks at the Old City Jail Art Center, formerly an unusual jailhouse for the county’s convicts. Churchgoers can pray at the smallest church in the US. Take care when roaming about in the Altamaha if you chance upon Altie, the Altamaha Sea Monster. And if you want to stay indoors, then stay a while at the Open Gates Bed & Breakfast or Darien Waterfront Inn.

Aerial view of downtown Dahlonega, Georgia, with the Gold Museum at the center of the town square.

Dahlonega is a golden destination to explore because it was the site of the first major US Gold Rush . Only an hour away from Atlanta , visitors can enjoy the sweet splendors of the Heart of Georgia Wine Country deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains’ foothills. The Dahlonega Gold Museum highlights the tragedies and treacheries pervading the first Gold Rush in the United States, and historical markers such as “The Trail of Tears” depict the unfair eviction of the Cherokee from their homeland and their exodus towards the Mississippi River.

Visitors can undertake guided tours through the old gold mines in the Consolidated Gold Mine, or you might apply the “Dahlonega method” to scoop gold nuggets from the many rivers and streams crossing Dahlonega. If you are not interested in gold, then perhaps the scenic and wine-making delights of the Blue Mountain Vineyards will sate you deeply. Or maybe petting the lovely animals of the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve & Zoo is more to your liking. Whatever you decide on, remember to pick a place to settle down like The Mountain Top Lodge or Dahlonega Inn on Main.

Madison, Georgia, USA, overlooking the downtown historic district.

Approximately 29 miles from the city of Athens , Madison welcomes travelers to simple livelihoods and a handful of historic attractions. Among these humble historic sites are the Rogers House, Richter Cottage, and Rose Cottage, a trinity of antebellum architecture that preserves the different aspects and cultures of old Americana life in Morgan County. One can learn all about the African-American histories of Morgan County and Madison at the Morgan County African-American Museum. The Scull Shoals archaeological site and Hard Labor Creek State Park are two excellent locations for scenic walks and hiking. Newcomers should not miss out on the annual Chili Cook-Off and Fall Festival, one of Madison’s prettiest celebrations in October 19. There is also the magical Firefly Festival every July when the entire town brightens with the glow of thousands of fireflies. Consider occupying your blissful nights at the James Madison Inn while enjoying your trip to Madison.

As the name implies, the remote town of Blue Ridge is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains and about an hour away from Dahlonega. Aside from trekking through the southernmost reaches of the Appalachian Mountains on the Appalachian Trail , travelers will fall in love with Lake Blue Ridge, the Ocoee River, and the Toccoa River, where fishers can catch some prized trout in the Trout Fishing Capital of Georgia. Let yourself wander liberally and merrily through the sylvan majesties of the Chattahoochee National Forest or the roaring rapids of the Chattahoochee River. Pluck fresh bounties from the Mercier Orchard, one of the oldest local farms in Georgia. Most importantly, head over to the Sasquatch Museum to undertake Bigfoot expeditions or to simply learn more tidbits from cryptozoology . Need a place to rest up and refresh? No worries because the Blue Ridge Inn Bed & Breakfast has you covered.

Tallulah Falls

Tallulah Falls, Georgia, USA, overlooking Tallulah Gorge in autumn.

Tallulah Falls is a premier resort town within the Tallulah Gorge State Park , where Victorian-era architecture mingles with far more ancient forests and riverways from the Tallulah River. As a town that once rivaled Niagara Falls , one can feel enchanted by Tallulah Falls’ trails and treks within the gorge and along the river. Naturally, there are several grand waterfalls, such as the dramatic and dynamic Hurricane Falls and the magical Bridal Veil Falls , that will whet your appetites with lush and lovely sprays.

You can venture into the Chattooga Sounds Camp and pitch your tent for days and nights in these soothing woodlands. And if you want to, you can wade through Lake Rabun or Tugaloo Lake, the latter marking the state borders between Georgia and South Carolina . When it comes to lodgings, the Glen-Ella Springs Inn & Restaurant and the Historic Lake Rabun Hotel & Restaurant do not disappoint. So travel 35 minutes from the town of Helen and embrace the natural ambiance of Tallulah Falls.

Helen, Georgia, USA - Bavarian village town with traditional architecture, Main Street, cobblestone sidewalk, corner gift shop stores, and bustling with tourists.

Have a healthy and happy time while touring the mountainous town of Helen . Bavarian-themed buildings line the serene Chattahoochee River, and the town takes full advantage of this major waterway by promoting the Helen Waterpark for all to have fun. Aside from buildings inspired by Bavaria or Germany , Helen also has the Hardman Farm Historic Site, an Italian-style mansion from 1870 that is adjacent to an old Native American burial mound .

Helen is most famous for its vineyards and wineries, as the Habersham Winery and Cenita Vineyards exemplify with their exquisite nectar. You can learn more about the indigenous cultures that make the Blue Ridge Mountains their home at the Sautee Nacoochee Cultural Center. Journey through the mountainous landscape to appreciate Anna Ruby Falls or Smithgall Woods State Park. For those of you who desire to explore Helen for a longer period, you ought to camp out at the Unicoi State Park Campground or seek accommodations at the Alpine Village Inn, Loreley Resort, or Valhalla Resort Hotel.

Historic building at Mary Ross Park, Brunswick, Georgia, home to a local farmer's market and the annual Brunswick Stewbilee.

Similar to Darien, Brunswick serves as a gateway to four barrier islands of the Golden Isles, such as Jekyll Island and Saint Simons Island . Visitors can admire the Victorian-era architecture and well-preserved edifices in the Old Town Brunswick National Historic District. There is also an old Lover’s Oak Tree that has thrived and grown since 1787. Mary Ross Waterfront Park and Turtle River are two vibrant playgrounds for you to soak in the watery wonders of Brunswick. One can watch vintage or modern movies at the Historic Ritz Theatre, built in 1898 when it was once called the Grand Opera House.

On Turtle River, you can set sail aboard the Emerald Princess Casino, a four-deck cruise ship for gamblers and gamers eager to lose and win while skimming the waves. Some of you might be intrigued to tour the Hamilton Plantation Slave Cabins, a haunting reminder of America’s darkest chapter in slavery . There is more to admire and discover in Brunswick, especially in the Golden Isles connected to the town such as the 18 th -century stronghold of Fort Frederica National Monument in Saint Simons Island.

Saint Marys

Visitors arriving by ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore from St. Marys, Georgia.

With the Saint Marys River delineating the border between Georgia and Florida , the town of Saint Marys embraces newcomers from two different states—even people from Jacksonville , Florida, can travel 43 miles north to enjoy Saint Marys’ many cultural and natural attractions. There is, for example, the Dungeness Ruins on Cumberland Island, the remnants of a 59-room Queen Anne-style mansion from the 1800s. Next to this illustrious ruin is the Ice House Museum, a former storage depot for ice boxes long before refrigerators were in vogue.

Aside from historical landmarks, Cumberland Island promotes one long stretch of beach that the Atlantic Ocean constantly bombards with incredible waves. Consider trekking through the Crooked River State Park or attending the town’s own version of Mardi Gras every February. Perhaps the Saint Marys Seafood Festival in October or the Woodbine Crawfish Festival in April is your preference. Either way, you should definitely stash your belongings at the Cumberland Kings Bay Lodges Motel or Riverview Inn.

Dublin City Hall, 420 Academy Avenue, Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia.

The town of Dublin in Georgia, less than two hours from the city of Savannah , should not be mistaken for the city of Dublin in Ireland . This little town along the Oconee River, dubbed “The Emerald City,” will thrust visitors to a different world due to its Southern hospitality and its Irish influence. Head over to the Dublin-Laurens County Veterans Building to pay homage to the many American soldiers who gave their lives to their country. You can learn more about Dublin’s past at the Downtown Dublin Audio tour, or you can go straight to the First African Baptist Church, where African-Americans freely preached their faith. You might also be interested in visiting the MLK Monument Park, where Martin Luther King Junior gave one of his first speeches for liberty and equity. For those who want to roam about, then let the Beaverdam Wildlife Management Area and the River Bend Wildlife Management Area enthrall you with its arboreal atmosphere. Finally, book a room at the Page House Bed & Breakfast.

An Unforgettable Journey Through Georgia

Munch on Georgia’s official state crop, the peanut, and slurp some refreshing Coca-Cola as you journey through 2024’s most adorable small towns in Georgia. Participate in the festive Mardi Gras in Saint Marys and embrace the Bavarian charms of Helen. Brave the mountainous landscapes of Blue Ridge and Dahlonega, and treat yourself to tidbits of knowledge at Madison and Brunswick. Most of all, it creates merriment and memories while exploring the largest state, east of the Mississippi River. So, rev your vehicle and kickstart your adventure through the lovely state of Georgia.

21 Best Things To Do in Americus Georgia On Your Next Visit

A mericus, Georgia is one of those destinations that might simply not hit people’s radar. It’s not flashy and fast-paced like Atlanta nor does it have a musical vibe like Macon. There’s not a river bordering its city streets like Columbus or Albany.

What Americus Georgia is, is a place rich with history, the arts, some of the friendliest people I’ve come across, and an incredible entrepreneurial spirit.

If you love art and culture, learning about history, visiting national parks, or even hunting for ghosts, Americus is THE place to be.

How To Get To Americus Georgia

If you’re not within driving distance the cheapest way to explore Americus/Sumter County is to fly into Atlanta.

Once in Atlanta grab a rental car, which in itself, is a bit of an adventure as you’ll take a train to the arrivals/luggage area, grab your luggage and then take another train to the car parking structure.

From there it’s an easy drive, about 2 1/2 hours southwest, of the city.

21 Best Things To Do In and Around Americus Georgia

Americus Center for the Arts

Run by the Americus-Sumter County Arts Council, and features the work of local, and young, artists. The Arts Council also puts on workshops, camps and events.

Americus Hot Glass Beer Fest – April

Each April Americus combes their love of craft beer with the history of glass blowing and throws one heck of a party.

This is a not to be missed festival!

Tapping Americus’ rich history of artisan glass blowing and combining it with Georgia’s innovative craft brewing culture, Hot Glass Craft Beer means to bring these two artisan worlds together in one epic event.

This event will feature at least 20 regional breweries with three to four different beers from each.

Americus Music Fest – October

Andersonville National Historic Site

Home to the Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the final fourteen months of the American Civil War.

During their confinement, almost 13,000 died from disease, overcrowding (the prison was built to house 10,000 prisoners), bad sanitation, malnutrition, and exposure (yes, it gets COLD in the winter and it’s blazing hot with no shade in the summer).

National Prisoner of War Museum

At the same location as the Andersonville National Historic Site giving you the opportunity to visit both places with one stop.

This museum showcases the men and women who have suffered in captivity. This is a place where their story is told. The stories are heartbreaking but important that they are not forgotten.

Andersonville National Cemetery

Located 300 yards north of the prison site it was established in 1864. The 12,920 men who died at the prison camp are buried in the cemetery.

Principal characteristics and features of the cemetery landscape include the 4-1/2 foot high brick wall that surrounds the site and is an integral part of both the aesthetic and historical scene; the regular and rhythmic rows of marble headstones; the large canopy trees; and the large monuments that are spaced around the entire site.

Haunted History Tour of Americus Georgia

Speaking of ghosts, during the month of October there are a number of ghost walking tours taking place.

The tour walks your around historic downtown and shares some colorful ghost stories.

Remember, you are in the south, so some of the stories might be a trigger for you, but they are all historically accurate and interesting.

Sadly, I didn’t see any ghosts on my tour, but it wasn’t from lack of trying.

Ghost Hunting Tips:

  • Turn off cell phone during investigations and tours. Your phone can interfere with the reading on a K2 meter.
  • When attending a group tour always try to be towards the front of the group.
  • Go with an open mind and just plan on having a great time!
  • Invest in high-quality equipment including an EVP recorder and headphones.

  • Visit the same place multiple times. You’ll undoubtedly get a different experience.

Places To Eat & Drink in Americus, Georgia

Gladys Kitchen

If you only have time to eat at one place during your visit you need to take your happy self right on over to Gladys Kitchen for some cafeteria-style southern soul food.

The only thing you need to know is to order the butter roll dessert.

This is definitely a case where you want dessert.

The recipe is top secret (I asked), but it reminds me of bread pudding, but better.

Even when I try to eat healthily when I travel I still indulge and this was definitely worth the indulgence.

Little Brother’s Bistro & Cafe

Little Brother’s Bistro has been serving unique, fresh and delicious soups, salads, sandwiches and more since 2009.

Located in the Historic Windsor Hotel and open just for lunch they served up one of the best salads I’d had in ages.

Order at the counter and they’ll bring your food to your table.

Make sure you look at the daily specials. There were many but I’m glad I went with the salad.

Toboggan Steve’s

Well, you know I had to check this one out. I never did solve the puzzle of why a place in southern Georgia has the word Toboggan in the name.

However, it didn’t take long to discover why this pub-style spot is frequented by the locals.

Wings, burgers, wraps, craft beer, cocktails, and even dessert martinis! Live music throughout the week.

The Station

Located in downtown Americus and offering up everything from soups and sandwiches to steaks and seafood. There is also a full bar.

Where To Stay in Americus, Georgia – Historic Windsor Hotel

When the offer arrives to stay at one of the most haunted hotels in Georgia this ghost hunter jumps at the chance!

The Historic Windsor Hotel in historic downtown Americus has so many haunted stories that the front desk has a paranormal book that records the happenings.

Built in 1892 the Windsor was a 100-room, five-story Victorian structure complete with towers, balconies, and a three-story open atrium lobby.

The hotel is now comprised of 53 period-style rooms all with modern amenities instead of the original 100 rooms.

The lobby, which is a gorgeous welcome, is one of my favorite features. I love the open atrium-style in hotels and even though it’s open it still feels warm and inviting.

Windsor Hotel Restaurants

There are two restaurants on-site. We dined at Rosemary & Thyme and really enjoyed it. Be sure to check out the tile flooring that is original to the building.

Floyd’s Pub has outdoor seating on the verandah when the weather is cooperative.

Rosemary & Thyme Restaurant is a modern, upscale American restaurant located in the Historic Windsor Hotel. White linen tablecloths, candlelight and quiet ambiance welcome diners.

What Is The Most Haunted Room at the Windsor Hotel?

I asked to be in the most haunted room at the hotel and the clerk handed over keys to room 333 with a “are you sure?” look on her face.

Game on! I’m so excited to be here I’m like a kid before Christmas. I have two nights to find and record evidence of ghosts.

My room is stylish with 12-foot ceilings, a full bath and loads of space. As soon as I can I unpack my luggage while getting a feel for the room.

Honestly, nothing feels amiss, but I’m hopeful that I’ll have an encounter during my stay.

The first night I stayed awake as long as possible, wandered the halls, and absolutely nothing happened. When I finally slept it was soundly and without dreams.

The second night I woke numerous times but never figured out why. There were no noises, no weird movement in the room, nothing that led me to believe anything other than I was having another restless night.

Even though I never encountered a ghost I still loved my stay at the beautiful historic Windsor Hotel.

Albania will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Croatia beat Italy.

Croatia will be through to the round of 16 as group runners-up if they beat Italy and Albania do not beat Spain (if Albania also win, Croatia and Albania will be split for second and third place by the above criteria). Croatia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Albania avoid defeat.

25 June: England (4) vs Slovenia (2) , Denmark (2) vs Serbia (1)

England will be through to the round of 16 on Monday night, at least as a best third-placed team, if Albania do not beat Spain in Group B. England will be through to the round of 16 if they avoid defeat against Slovenia or Denmark do not beat Serbia. England will win the group if they beat Slovenia or England draw and Denmark do not win. If England draw and Denmark win they will be split for first and second place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. England cannot finish lower than third.

Denmark will be through to the round of 16 if they beat Serbia. If Denmark and Slovenia both draw, they will be split for second and third place by the criteria described above, similarly first and second place if Denmark and Slovenia both win (or Denmark and England, if Denmark win and England draw), or third and fourth place if Denmark and Slovenia both lose. Denmark will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Slovenia avoid defeat.

Slovenia will be through to the round of 16 if they beat England. Slovenia will win the group if they win and Denmark do not. If Slovenia and Denmark both win, they will be split for first and second place by the criteria described above, similarly second and third place if they both draw, or third and fourth place if they both lose, or Slovenia and Serbia for third or fourth place if Slovenia lose and Serbia draw.

Serbia will be through to the round of 16 if they beat Denmark and Slovenia do not beat England (if Serbia and Slovenia win, Serbia will be third behind England on head-to-head record). If Serbia draw and Slovenia lose they will be split for third and fourth place by the criteria described above. Serbia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Slovenia avoid defeat.

25 June :   Netherlands (4) vs Austria (3) , France (4) vs Poland (0)

Netherlands will be through to the round of 16 on Monday night, at least as a best third-placed team, if Albania do not beat Spain in Group B. Netherlands will be through to the round of 16 (in the top two) if they avoid defeat against Austria. Netherlands will win the group if they win and France do not, or if Netherlands draw and France lose. Netherlands will finish second if they draw and France win. If Netherlands and France both win or both draw, they will be split for first place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. Similarly if Netherlands and France both lose, they will be split for second and third place by the same criteria.

France will be through to the round of 16 on Monday night, at least as a best third-placed team, if Albania do not beat Spain in Group B. France will be through to the round of 16 (in the top two) if they avoid defeat against Poland or if Austria do not beat Netherlands. France will win the group if they win and Netherlands do not. If France and Netherlands both win or both draw they will be split for first and second place by the above criteria, similarly for second and third place if they both lose.

Austria will be through to the round of 16 (in the top two) if they beat Netherlands. Austria will win the group if they win and France do not. If Austria draw and France lose, Austria will finish third behind France on head-to-head record.

Poland are unable to reach the round of 16 and will finish fourth.

26 June : Slovakia (3) vs Romania (3) , Ukraine (3) vs Belgium (3)

Romania will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they avoid defeat by Slovakia. Romania will win the group if they win and Belgium do not beat Ukraine. Romania will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Ukraine avoid defeat.

Belgium will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they avoid defeat by Ukraine. Belgium will win the group if they win and Slovakia do not beat Romania. Belgium will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Romania avoid defeat.

Slovakia will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they beat Romania. Slovakia will finish third if they draw. Slovakia will finish first if they win and Ukraine do not beat Belgium. Slovakia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Belgium avoid defeat.

Ukraine will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they beat Belgium. Ukraine will finish first if they win and Romania do not beat Slovakia. Ukraine will finish third if they draw and the other game is not drawn. Ukraine will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Slovakia avoid defeat.

In the event that both games are drawn , the four teams will finish equal on four points. The following scenarios would then come into play:

A) If the two draws have the same scoreline, or if Belgium vs Ukraine is a draw with fewer goals than Slovakia vs Romania, the group ranking would be based on goal difference and goals scored and would be:

1) Romania 2) Belgium 3) Slovakia 4) Ukraine

B: If the two draws have different scorelines, the following scenarios are anticipated:

If Belgium vs Ukraine ends 1-1 and Slovakia vs Romania ends 0-0, or any pair of results where Belgium score exactly one more goal than Romania in their draw, Belgium and Romania would occupy the first two positions in the group but would be equal on goal difference and goals scored. In that case, as per article 20.01d of the official competition regulations, the head-to-head criteria is reapplied exclusively to those two teams, which would mean Belgium ahead of Romania as they won their direct match. Slovakia would be third and Ukraine fourth on goal difference.

In all other scenarios, Romania and Belgium would occupy the top two spots in the group, split on goals scored. Belgium will win the group if they score two (or more) goals more than Romania in their draw; Romania would win the group if they score more goals than Belgium in their draw. Slovakia would finish ahead of Ukraine in third place based on goal difference.

In all of these scenarios, the situation stipulated in article 20.02 of the competition regulations (penalty kicks in case of perfect equality) could not apply. Equally, the situations stipulated in articles 20.01g and 20.01h (disciplinary points and European Qualifiers rankings) could not apply.

26 June : Georgia (1) vs Portugal (6) , Czechia (1) vs Türkiye (3)

Portugal are through to the round of 16 as group winners.

Türkiye will be through to the round of 16, as group runners-up, if they avoid defeat against Czechia. Türkiye will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Georgia beat Portugal.

Czechia will be through to the round of 16, as group runners-up, if they beat Türkiye and Georgia do not beat Portugal. If Czechia and Georgia both win, they will be split for second and third place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. Czechia will finish third if they draw and Georgia do not win. Czechia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose.

Georgia will be through to the round of 16, as group runners-up, if they beat Portugal and Czechia beat Türkiye, provided Georgia finish ahead of Czechia on the criteria described above. Georgia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Czechia avoid defeat.

How teams are split when level on points

If two or more teams in the same group are equal on points on completion of the final tournament group stage, the following criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine their rankings:

a. higher number of points obtained in the matches played among the teams in question b. superior goal difference resulting from the matches played among the teams in question c. higher number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams in question d. if, after having applied criteria a) to c), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the remaining teams to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to i) apply in the order given to the two or more teams still equal e. superior goal difference in all group matches f. higher number of goals scored in all group matches g. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points) h. position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings , or if Germany, the host association team, is involved in the comparison, drawing of lots

If two teams which have the same number of points and the same number of goals scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still equal at the end of that match, their final rankings are determined by kicks from the penalty mark, provided that no other teams within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group matches. Should more than two teams have the same number of points, the criteria listed under Paragraph 20.01 apply.

The situation stipulated in article 20.02 of the competition regulations (penalty kicks in case of perfect equality) cannot apply to any of the groups.

How the four best third-placed teams are decided

With reference to article 21.03, the results of the third-placed teams are compared based on their three group stage matches, according to the following criteria:

a. higher number of points b. superior goal difference c. higher number of goals scored d. higher number of wins e. lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points) f. position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings , or if Germany, the host association team, is involved in the comparison, drawing of lots

Once the four best third-placed teams were determined, article 21.05 of the regulations explains which third-placed team plays in which tie.
