Discover Pennsylvania's Charming Scenic Trains (2024)

Last revised: June 14, 2024

By:  Adam Burns

With such a diverse history, Pennsylvania scenic train rides offer everything imaginable. The state features one of the most prolific collection of railroad attractions throughout the country with numerous museums and rides available.

  • One can enjoy fine dining on the Tioga Central Railroad.
  • Walk among exquisitely preserved rolling stock at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania Railroad.
  • Take a trip back in time to the 19th century aboard the Strasburg Railroad (the second most popular scenic train ride in the country, witnessing more than 400,000 riders annually).

Pennsylvania also boasts a vast collection of operational steam locomotives at such places as Steamtown in Scranton and the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad in New Hope.

Finally, you can catch trolley rides at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Electric City Trolley Museum, and the Rockhill Trolley Museum.

Please note!   This guide information covers Pennsylvania scenic train rides related to vacation/tourism destinations-only.  If you are interested in long-distance rail travel please visit  Amtrak's website , our nation's passenger rail carrier.

State Rail History

Pennsylvania's rail history dates back to the Baltimore & Ohio's chartering (America's first common-carrier).  In 1827 the tiny Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad was built to haul coal from a mine near Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe).

According to an in-depth article  Trains Magazine  published in its January, 2007 issue entitled, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," this operation is also believed to be America's first tourist railroad.

After coal movements ceased in 1872, the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) acquired the railroad in 1874 and subsequently leased it to brothers Theodore and H. L. Mumford who converted the line into a tourist attraction.

It proved quite popular and carried on under this arrangement for more than a half-century.  On May 24, 1929 the CNJ sold the property where it became the stand-alone Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway Company.

Alas, this enterprise proved short-lived; a victim of the Great Depression, it closed in 1932.

For Pennsylvania, its involvement with modern railroads began with the construction of a canal (officially known as the Pennsylvania Canal) on February 25, 1826 to connect Harrisburg with Pittsburgh.

A few years later plans were finalized for an extension to Philadelphia.

In an interesting design, engineers came up with an interlinking railroad/canal system, collectively known as the Main Line of Public Works.

While successful, officials quickly realized an all-rail route was the most efficient.  It could operate at greater speeds and in all types of weather.

Fearful their port of Philadelphia would fall behind rivals New York, Charleston, and Baltimore, they decided on just such an arrangement and, according to Mike Schafer and Brian Solomon's book, " Pennsylvania Railroad ," chartered the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1846.

The PRR became the most powerful and successful railroad in America, carrying an impeccable credit rating and unimaginable cash reserves.

By the early 20th century it operated more than 10,000 route miles, track mileage totaling 28,000, and served 11 states.

It confidently (and arrogantly) proclaimed itself, " The Standard Railroad Of The World ."  But the PRR was not Pennsylvania's only railroad.

Several other widely recognized names also served it some fashion including the Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Reading Railroad, Lehigh & New England, Erie Railroad, and Delaware, Lackawanna & Western.

Pennsylvania's importance to the industry even transcended railroads:

  • The country's largest (and nearly oldest) steam locomotive manufacturer was located in Eddystone (Baldwin Locomotive Works).
  • General Electric's plant in Erie has produced locomotives since the early 20th century.
  • J. G. Brill Company out-shopped streetcar and interurban equipment at its Philadelphia facility from 1869 until 1954 (then under the name, ACF-Brill Motors Company).

Finally, don't miss the Keystone State's numerous engineering landmarks; Tunkhannock Viaduct (Nicholson), Starrucca Viaduct (Lanesboro), remains of the Kinzua Viaduct (McKean County), Horseshoe Curve (near Altoona), and the 48-arch Rockville Bridge spanning the Susquehanna River.

In his book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads ," historian John F. Stover points out Pennsylvania's rail mileage peaked at 11,551 in 1920, ranking 3rd among all 50 states.

Unfortunately, for many reasons, ranging from market loss to government regulation, a staggering 55.5% of this rail infrastructure has since been abandoned (6,421 miles).

The Association of American Railroads notes that today, just 5,130 miles remain in service.

  • Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, highlighting the first railroad built through the Allegheny Mountains in central Pennsylvania.

  • Allentown & Auburn Railroad

This short line began in 2015 and operates just over 4 miles of a former Reading Railroad branch between Kutztown and an interchange with Norfolk Southern at Topton.

The railroad also offers public excursions, utilizing a restored, early SW locomotive that was originally built for the Philadelphia, Bethlehem & New England in March, 1937.  The trips are hosted with three cabooses, one coach, and an open flatcar.

  • Bellefonte Historical Railroad

This organization tells the history of railroading in Bellefonte and Centre County, Pennsylvania. They are housed inside the restored Bald Eagle Valley/Pennsylvania Railroad's brick depot, which originally opened on February 11, 1889.

The organization also hosts several public excursions throughout the year using a collection of equipment on-hand.

  • Catawissa Railroad Company

The Catawissa Railroad Company, located in Catawissa, is actually a collection of restored cabooses painted in their original company colors, some of which can be rented for overnight  stays. Also be sure to see the town's preserved Catawissa Railroad (a component of the Reading Railroad) depot.

  • Connellsville Canteen Museum

This museum, a non-profit organization operated by the Fayette County Cultural Trust, is located in the once-busy railroad town of Connellsville.

Their overall mission is to preserve the history of Fayette County's World War II soldiers and veterans, and the sacrifices they made during that conflict.

In addition, they also feature a very nice model train layout known as the Great Indian Creek Valley Railroad, designed and built by Harry Clark.

If you're hungry be sure and stop by their café for either breakfast or lunch.  To learn more, plan a visit, and see all of their displays please visit their website.

  • Train Rides In PA At A Glance

As mentioned above, while the state's involvement with railroads, even in their most rudimentary form, can be traced back to the 1820's, it was the Pennsylvania Railroad's (PRR) opening of its main line from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh in late 1852 that truly brought Pennsylvania into the modern age.

The PRR would eventually grow into a Goliath system as the most powerful railroad in the country with more than 10,000 miles stretching from New York to Chicago with its trackage was heavily concentrated in its home state.

In January, 2007 Trains Magazine published a nearly cover-to-cover piece on all the 50 states' histories with railroads.  It was entitled  " Great Railroading: State-By-State ."

There was considerable coverage given to Pennsylvania, which spoke about its far-reaching operations from magnificent steam locomotives grinding up Horseshoe Curve to small 3-foot, narrow-gauge systems.

The state was also home to substantial streetcar and interurban operations.

train trips pa

As a whole, scenic train rides in PA do a fine job of highlighting the memory of these transportation companies.

In few other states can you ride behind, or peruse, rail equipment which includes steam locomotives, diesels, and trolleys.

No other attraction provides quite the level of authenticity as the Strasburg Railroad .  It features a fine collection of preserved steam locomotives which take passengers on a 4.5-mile journey through beautiful Lancaster County.

Trips are enjoyed within restored, wooden cars which range from simple coach class to a full-service dining experience.

The charm is only furthered by Pennsylvania's popular Amish Country setting.  If you're after more than just a train, however, consider visiting one of the premier museums in the country right nearby, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania just outside of Lancaster.

There is also the Steamtown National Historic in Scranton which maintains an impressive collection of steam locomotives.  In all, train rides in PA offer a little of everything and definitely are worth considering!

  • The Choo Choo Barn ("Traintown")

Located in Boyertown in Lancaster County this attraction is very near the Strasburg Railroad.  It features a 1,700-foot train layout display for visitors to enjoy.  This is certainly worth a visit if you are planning a trip to ride the Strasburg!

  • Colebrookdale Railroad

A relatively new tourist attraction, the Colebrookdale Railroad, also known as the  Secret Valley Line , began hosting trips in 2014, operating 8.6 miles between Boyertown and Pottstown.

The trackage was originally built by a company carrying the same name, later operated by the Reading Railroad. For more information please visit their website.

  • East Broad Top Railroad

The East Broad Top Railroad, chartered in 1856, was built as a coal hauler, via a line that connected Mt. Union with Woodvale.

After freight operations ended it became a tourist attraction for decades, blossoming into one of Pennsylvania's most popular and successful train rides.  Alas, these trips were discontinued in 2011.

The railroad is currently under a major restoration by new owners East Broad Top Foundation, which began in February, 2020.  Limited excursions resumed in 2021 with a full schedule hopefully available in 2022.

The EBT is a National Historic Landmark.  Long terms plans include reopening as much of the original 33-mile system as possible, much of which has been out of service since 1956.

Voted #3 Best Scenic Train Ride by USA Today

Locomotive 16 train at Orbisonia Station getting ready for the first ride

The East Broad Top is many things — a delightful family destination, a National Historic Landmark, a great volunteer opportunity, an unparalleled preservation undertaking, and more. The railroad, which was built beginning in 1872, is the only surviving three-foot gauge common carrier railroad east of the Rocky Mountains.  Now, we are proud to offer visitors from around the world the opportunity to experience America’s industrial past.

After many years of inactivity, the East Broad Top has been purchased by a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation. With strong backing from prominent rail-industry leaders, the EBT Foundation will work with the volunteers of the Friends of the East Broad Top and the Rockhill Trolley Museum to return our Baldwin-built steam locomotives to operating condition and to continue stabilizing the railroad’s historic buildings. The Foundation is especially grateful to the Kovalchick family for having preserved this National Historic Landmark since 1956, and to the employees, volunteers, and fans whose enthusiasm makes this monumental undertaking worthwhile.

The Only Original Narrow Gauge Railroad East of the Rocky Mountains!

Your visit helps us preserve one of Pennsylvania’s most important industrial heritage sites.

150 years ago the East Broad Top was among the earliest railroads in America to try a revolutionary new technology: narrow gauge. Today it is the oldest narrow-gauge railroad anywhere in the United States, and the last narrow gauge common carrier east of the Rocky Mountains. Nestled in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, the EBT stands as a  monument to early railroading and our industrial heritage.

When the EBT suspended freight service in 1956, its crews simply went home, leaving a time capsule that the Smithsonian has described as one of the most intact 19th-century industrial sites in the country. Saved from scrapping by the Kovalchick family, the EBT was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1964.

A ride on the Colebrookdale is an enchanting experience that transports passengers to a bygone era and one becomes captivated by the luxury and elegance. As you board the train, you are awe-induced by the meticulously restored passenger cars. Everything provides a sense of nostalgia and refinement and replicates the “golden age” of railroading. The redevelopment of the historic central terminal area in the heart of Boyertown has been a critical component of the Colebrookdale Railroad community and economic development project since its inception. The future of the railroad and its catalytic impact on southeastern Pennsylvania turns on the successful development of the terminal’s freight and passenger capacity.

Steam locomotive with red passenger cars

Pennsylvania is rich in railroading heritage. There are dozens of museums, tourist railroads and railroad sites in the Keystone State, many in close proximity to one another. From the famous to the hidden gems, here are Pennsylvania tourist railroads you must visit from the Trains Magazine Tourist Trains Guidebook !

Pennsylvania Tourist Railroads and Museums

Southcentral pennsylvania.

East Broad Top Railroad — 421 Meadow Street, Rockhill Furnace The East Broad Top is a time capsule with its yard, buildings and equipment, mostly intact since its original closure in 1956. Walking tours of the shop facilities are offered on days when trains are operating. Of course, no visit to the East Broad Top is complete without a ride on a portion of the original railroad. The restored 2-8-2 steam locomotive No. 16 heading the train is always the icing on the cake!

Everett Railroad — 244 Pullman Drive, Hollidaysburg Scenic train rides through Pennsylvania farmlands and along the banks of the Juniata River are offered out of Hollidaysburg. A variety of excursions include ice cream trains, holiday rides and adult-themed trips, all of which can take an hour or longer. Steam and diesels pull a growing fleet of vintage open-window passenger cars. However, it’s the railroad’s 1920 Alco-Cooke 2-6-0 No. 11 that provides an authentic experience straight out of the 1940s.

Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark — 2400 Veterans Memorial Highway, Altoona An iconic landmark in railroad engineering, what else can we say about Horseshoe Curve? While the former Pennsylvania Railroad main line still sees service today from Norfolk Southern, traffic may be sparse throughout the week; more trains seem to traverse the area on Fridays and Saturdays. After doing some sightseeing at the curve, don’t forget to take in more Altoona railroading lore with the nearby Railroading Memorial Museum downtown.

Northern Central Railway — 117 North Front Street, New Freedom This railroad operates over 10 miles of the previous incarnation that Abraham Lincoln traveled on while en route to deliver his famous Gettysburg Address. His funeral train traversed the line two years later. The 1860s time period is recreated with replica coaches and 4-4-0 steam locomotive No. 17, which was constructed in 2013. Different excursions include destinations to Seitzland, Glen Rock, Hanover Junction, and Seven Valleys. The original Hanover Junction station, completed in 1852 and where Lincoln disembarked for Gettysburg, is a must visit!

Southeast Pennsylvania

New Hope Railroad — 32 West Bridge Street, New Hope Steam- and diesel-powered excursions are offered along the former branch line of the Reading Company. The star is Baldwin 2-8-0 No. 40, which is scheduled to operate on select dates during the summer, fall and holiday seasons. From 45-minute train rides to longer excursions, with multiple classes to choose from, there’s something for everyone when visiting the New Hope Railroad.

Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania — 300 Gap Road, Strasburg As its name implies, this museum is home to about 100 locomotives and rolling stock from the Pennsylvania Railroad and other railroads that served the state. The George M. Hart Rolling Stock Hall is the centerpiece of the campus with its early 20th-century, glass-roofed train shed housing 50 pieces of railroad equipment. Of course, the popular Strasburg Rail Road is just across the road. More on that in a bit!

Reading and Northern Passenger Department — 3501 Pottsville Pike, Reading Mainline passenger excursions serve the dual purpose of goodwill and promoting freight on the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad. Steam and diesel locomotives crisscross the regional system carrying thousands of people throughout the year, including the Reading-Jim Thorpe Iron Horse Ramble all-day excursion, which is pulled by T-1 4-8-4 No. 2102. The most popular excursion is the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway out of Jim Thorpe which travels into the Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Strasburg Rail Road — 301 Gap Road, Ronks As America’s oldest continuously operating line with an authentic steam-era setting, it’s no wonder Strasburg is proclaimed as the cream of the crop in tourist railroad circles. Historic locomotives haul an impressive fleet of wooden passenger cars along the 9-mile, 45-minute round trip through Amish farmland. Special events take place year-round with extra offerings, including hostling and shop tours, riding the Cranky Cars, and miniature steam train rides pulled by a restored Cagney locomotive.

Southwest Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Trolley Museum — 1 Museum Road, Washington As the oldest trolley museum in the state, the facility is home to a collection of nearly 50 restored and operational electric equipment. Several are still used today along the 4-mile round trip over the tracks of the original interurban route to Pittsburgh. At the museum’s Richfol Shelter, climb aboard for unlimited trolley rides as part of the admission!

Northeast Pennsylvania

Steamtown National Historic Site — 350 Cliff Street, Scranton Located at the shop complex of the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, Steamtown is a massive museum full of railroading history and technology. The 90-foot turntable is the centerpiece of a roundhouse housing exhibits and historic locomotives on display. Of course, there’s more to this 66-acre park with outdoor exhibits, shop tours, and train rides behind steam and diesel locomotives.

Pennsylvania’s 12 Most Scenic Fall Train Rides

Are you looking for a low-key way to enjoy autumn’s vibrant colors and get a gorgeous view of fall foliage in Pennsylvania? Think about taking a fall train ride to enjoy the spectacular color-changing leaves.

Pennsylvania’s rail lines played an enormous part in the history of the state, dating back to the early 1800s, long before the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution. Trains were part of the drive of the nation into a new frontier. Railroads in the keystone state have a rich past, phenomenal scenery, and today provide a calming and stress-free ride for the mature traveler to enjoy.

Train travel is slow travel, giving you time to relax, look out the window, and enjoy the spectacular view. There is no better time for a train ride than in the fall, when mother nature puts on a magnificent show with the foliage changing to vivid colors that stand out against the blue sky backdrop.

Let’s look at a few scenic train rides that provide stunning leaf-peeping opportunities.

East Broad Top Train Engine

1. East Broad Top Railroad (EBT)

Considered by The Smithsonian to be one of the best-preserved examples of 19th-century railroad and industrial complexes in the U.S., the East Broad Top Railroad (EBT) is tucked away in rural Rockhill Furnace, Pennsylvania. The EBT is a 150-year-old narrow-gauge line that runs through rolling hills, forests, pristine farmland, and endless mountains with steam engines and comfortable vintage passenger cars.

One-hour train rides in enclosed or open-air passenger cars, or even a genuine caboose, over a 9-mile round-trip from their historic station to Colgate Grove and back is available year-round. Fall foliage excursions and special events are a great way to enjoy the fall season.

2. Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers tours on a vintage steam coach built in the early 1900s. The train carries tourists across the Lehigh River over wonderful antique bridges, then into the Glen Onoko Falls nature preserve, where they can see the many waterfalls and beautiful scenery along the way, before routing to Lehigh Gorge State Park, which features amazing wildlife, mountains, beautiful scenery, and high cliffs. Local historians narrate the ride during the trip, educating the riders on the area’s history, the railway, and the Lehigh Gorge.

This ride is breathtaking in the fall when the leaves take on a colorful glow.

3. The New Hope Railroad

Neighboring Philadelphia is New Hope, Pennsylvania, home to The New Hope Railroad . This fun and exciting railway is located along the popular Delaware River, which visitors can explore and learn about during train rides. The antique trains run on historic tracks built-in 1891 by the North-East Pennsylvania Railroad.

Visitors will enjoy the story of the railway’s history, the beautiful scenery, and the life of early Americans during the steam engine era from an area expert. The train passes through scenic countryside and historic sites in Bucks County in a beautifully restored railroad car. The one and a half hour trip takes you on a 14-mile excursion over new and old bridges, along a network of streams, and through the valley surrounding the town of New Hope, Pennsylvania.

They have many special occasion rides in the fall, “No Hope After Dark” Halloween Festival, a 2-hour Fall Excursion, and Speakeasy Excursions.

The Oil Creek State Park and Titusville Railroad in Pennsylvania..jpg

4. Oil Creek And Titusville Railroad

This antique railway, called the OC&T , offers passengers and tourists the opportunity to ride some very old trains, learn about the famous past of Oil Creek Valley’s events and people, and adventure out into the countryside to explore beautiful views and historical landmarks in and around Titusville, Pennsylvania’s main train station and town. The train ride takes around three hours.

The Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad hosts fall foliage tours every year, and the leaves along the hills are magnificent. Their fall rides run until the middle of October. If you want to make it an overnight “train” trip, you can book a room at the Caboose Motel . You can sleep in a caboose and then enjoy the morning trains as they leave the station.

5. Northern Central Railway

When you board the William H. Simpson No. 17 steam locomotive, which is a complete reproduction of the train that carried President Abraham Lincoln to Gettysburg to deliver his famous speech, you are plunged into history. The Northern Central Railway has three different excursions to choose from, and all are round trips.

They also have a large variety of special events such as the “Wine and Cheese Express” and “PA Cowboy Weekend.”

The Strasburg Rail Road in Pennsylvania.

6. Strasburg Rail Road

Still holding the record as the oldest continuously operating railroad in the western hemisphere, the Strasburg Rail Road dates back to 1832. Riding the trains in Strasburg are just about as close as anyone can come to walking back into the early 1800s for a train ride. There are five steam engines and 19 passenger cars on the Strasburg line, including the first-class car, the dining car, and the President’s Car. The view is phenomenal from all the different cars.

You get to ride the train to Paradise, Pennsylvania, and back on the same track. You will enjoy the Amish countryside, and while it is a beautiful ride any time of year, the colors of the fall foliage just add to the splendor.

Sleep in a caboose at the Red Caboose Motel near the Strasburg Rail Road to keep the “train” experience going. The train runs right past the motel.

Strasburg Rail Road provided free admission to enjoy their activities. The Red Caboose Motel provided free lodging. All opinions remain my own.

7. Hawk Mountain Line

There is much more to this railroad than just a train and some tracks. The station is an all-volunteer operation. It is often referred to as the WK&S, short for Wanamaker, Kempton, and Southern. The Hawk Mountain Line takes you through some beautiful countryside to enjoy the rolling hills and farmland, the vividly colored leaves, while you just sit back and relax because of its rural location. After your train ride, you can enjoy the gift shop, concession stands, and a small museum full of old railroad equipment and objects dating back to the early 1800s.

The Hawk Mountain Line runs from early May through the first weekend in November.

8. Stourbridge Line

The Delaware Lackawaxen and Stourbridge Railroad Company, known as DL&S , offers seasonal excursions from Honesdale, Pennsylvania, on the Stourbridge Line. Tourists learn the history of the old trains as they ride through the picturesque scenery of the Gorge and Valley of the Lackawaxen River, heading to Lackawaxen and back on more than 25 miles of track. They offer a variety of excursions and special events.

The region’s experts and volunteers are always willing to share the past of the railroad and the city of Honesdale, and the details of how the trains were used to construct the city.

9. West Chester Railroad

The West Chester Railroad Heritage Association runs the 150-year-old railroad for tourists to enjoy. Located in West Chester, this historical railroad runs along the beautiful Chester Creek and continues to Glen Mills, where it doubles back to complete a 90-minute train trip. West Chester Station (formerly Market Street Station) is the main loading hub for this antique train.

10. Everett Railroad Company

Steam-powered trains may be an ancient transportation mode, but they are very much alive at the Everett Railroad Company . In addition to the trains, the Everett railyard offers all sorts of great activities, including viewing artifacts from the steam engine era. They provide excursions from one small town to another, and people get to enjoy the fall foliage during autumn.

The railroad started as a freight company in 1860 but has provided many tourism opportunities since then. The Everett Railroad Company trains operate from Hollidaysburg, Brookes Mills, and Roaring Springs. Tickets are easy to reserve. Train rides are available any time of the year, but rides during leaf-peeping season provide a spectacular view.

11. Middletown And Hummelstown Railroad

Visitors embark on the main tour on the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad . In Middletown, Pennsylvania, passengers can then board the Delaware, a 1920s vintage train, the Lackawant, or the Western. After boarding the train at the station, built in 1891, the entire journey along 11 miles of track passes Swatara Creek and several miles of beautiful countryside. It is narrated by a historian who presents the history of the railway and its trains, as well as the history of the city.

12. Amtrak Pennsylvanian

Amtrak trains run all over the nation, but the Pennsylvanian Train that runs between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh covers some of the most scenic territory you will ever view. To top it off, you get to enjoy some fantastic sights and history. You will travel by train around the famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Horseshoe Curve was an international feat when built. It was known as one of the eight engineering marvels of the world.

When traveling in the fall, you will also enjoy the Allegheny Mountains decked out in mother nature’s color palette. Plus, you will see Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle, the place where the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers converge.

Riding an excursion train should be on your Pennsylvania fall bucket-list. In addition to providing an insight into the past, Pennsylvania’s historic railroads offer a rare opportunity to see the magic of fall while riding aboard a piece of American history.

37 fun things to do in pennsylvania, according to a local.

From Hersheypark to the Liberty Bell, Pennsylvania has some of the country's most iconic attractions.

37 Fun Things to Do in Pennsylvania

Family smiling as they bike through Gettysburg National Military Park

Courtesy of Gettysburg National Military Park

Exploring battlefields at Gettysburg, catching a stunning Philadelphia sunset and witnessing a groundhog's weather prediction in Punxsutawney are just a few of the many things to do in the Keystone State.

You probably know the chocolate-inspired town of Hershey is located in Pennsylvania, and you might know a thing or two about Pennsylvania Amish Country. But did you know you can see Albert Einstein's brain on display in Philadelphia, or that you can visit an International Dark Sky Park in the northern part of the state?

Better still, many of the best things to do in Pennsylvania are free. It doesn't cost anything to listen to sonorous rocks ring with the strike of a hammer in Bucks County, attend the nation's largest free-admission music festival in Bethlehem or explore the whimsy of Randyland in Pittsburgh.

Cue the "Rocky" theme song and read on to discover the most fun things to do in Pennsylvania.

The "Rocky" Statue and Steps

Rocky Statue at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

J. Smith | Courtesy of Visit Philadelphia

Get your picture with the "Rocky" statue, originally created for a scene in "Rocky III," before lacing up and running the 72 stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, just like Rocky Balboa did in the first film. Once you get to the top, turn around and catch your breath while you take in the views of Independence Mall in Center City. If you really want to go the distance, sign up for the Rocky Run, which includes a 5K, 10K, and the 13.1 Italian Stallion Challenge hosted in the city each fall.

Aerial of Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania

Courtesy of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts

Milton S. Hershey established his famous chocolate company in 1894, but he didn't stop there. He used his fortune to build Hersheypark, ZooAmerica, The Hotel Hershey and its chocolate-themed spa, Milton Hershey School for underprivileged children, and other local attractions. (It's no wonder the town is named for him.) While you can't tour the original chocolate factory, you can learn about it on a free indoor ride – in a Hershey's Kiss-shaped car – at Hershey's Chocolate World or on a visit to The Hershey Story museum.

There's more to Hershey than chocolate, though – that's why it's one of the best places to visit in Pennsylvania . See a concert at Hersheypark Stadium, try a falconry experience and sip craft beer at Tröegs Independent Brewing. There are so many things to do in Hershey that it's worth a weekend (or more) to enjoy it all.

Explore Gettysburg National Military Park

A historical canon in Gettysburg National Military Park

In 1863, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War was fought in Gettysburg. Today, visitors can explore the storied battlefields at Gettysburg National Military Park via a variety of guided tours . Plan to spend a day or two here so you can explore the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, where you'll find the impressive Gettysburg Cyclorama: a large oil-on-canvas painting that depicts the final Confederate assault, considered a turning point in the war. Be sure to also check out the newly opened World War II American Experience museum, among other local attractions .

Art installation at Randyland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Courtesy of Jin Wu

In 1995, a man named Randy Gilman purchased a series of rundown buildings in the North Side of Pittsburgh and turned them into eye-popping art installations. Known as Randyland, the eclectic project has not only revamped the space but also helped to breathe new life into the area that surrounds it. The photo-worthy attraction is free to visit (though donations are welcomed), and Gilman himself will likely be on-site to greet you – Randyland is also his home.

Carnegie Science Museum

One of the most-visited attractions in Pittsburgh , the Carnegie Science Museum is especially fun for those interested in space exploration. Opened in late 2022, the exhibit "Mars: The Next Giant Leap" provides visitors with a realistic look at what life on this planet might look like while also covering important issues like sustainability and climate change. The adjacent Buhl Planetarium and Observatory is also a highlight, with a variety of shows and experiences that transport guests to outer space. Other exhibits and experiences at the Carnegie Science Museum include "Vikings: Warriors of the North Sea," with more than 140 Viking artifacts; "Robot Hall of Fame"; and "Bricksburgh," where kids of all ages will enjoy hands-on building fun.

There are three other Carnegie museums in Pittsburgh as well: the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History and The Andy Warhol Museum.

Andy Warhol's famous artwork is on display throughout this five-floor museum in Pittsburgh, the late artist's hometown. Expect to see his famous consumer product paintings of Campbell's soup cans and Coke; celebrity portraits including Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe; and even work from Warhol's mother, Julia Warhola, who also had an eye for art.

The museum also features rotating exhibits and special events including art workshops for kids and theater performances. Previous patrons say you'll learn a lot of little-known facts about Warhol during your visit. For instance, did you know he was a collector, putting together more than 600 time capsules in the latter part of his life?

Eat all you can at a smorgasbord

Eating at Shady Maple Smorgasbord is a rite of passage in Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of Amish Country, this all-you-can-eat buffet offers a variety of hearty options, including meat-carving stations and an extensive selection of desserts. Pennsylvanians say the restaurant lives up to the hype, and that even though there's often a wait – particularly on weekends – it doesn't take long to get in. Perhaps less legendary but equally delicious is the nearby Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord, also in Lancaster County.

Considered the world's first true penitentiary (a prison for those convicted of serious crimes), Eastern State Penitentiary remains a Gothic masterpiece, with vaulted, sky-lit cells and a Jewish synagogue. Its most notorious inmate, Al Capone, spent his first prison sentence here, and his cell is one of the prison's many interesting exhibits. Past visitors say the Eastern State Penitentiary is better than Alcatraz in San Francisco . Visit at Halloween for an extra spooky experience.

Duquesne Incline

The Duquesne Incline on the hillside of Mt. Washington overlooking downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Like other funiculars constructed in the 19th century, the Duquesne Incline (along with its sister, the Monongahela Incline) was built to transport cargo and people up and down Pittsburgh's Mount Washington in the 1800s. Today it's still used as a mode of transportation, but is more so a popular tourist attraction and ride, especially since it affords some of the best views of Pittsburgh's skyline, including the confluence of three rivers. The view is especially breathtaking at night.

Hit the rocks at Ringing Rocks County Park

Bring a hammer or two to Ringing Rocks County Park in Upper Black Eddy. When struck, the park's boulders ring like a bell. It's unclear why the sonorous rocks (their technical name) ring, though one geologist theory is that the rocks were under high pressure when they formed, leaving them resistant to breakage. Located in Bucks County, Ringing Rocks County Park is a scenic spot to go for a hike or bike ride (and see the area's largest waterfall) before enjoying a picnic lunch. Wear sturdy shoes for your visit since you'll be climbing across a field of rocks.

Once the home of archaeologist and tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer, Fonthill isn't a true castle, but it certainly resembles one. Take a guided tour to see it for yourself, and be sure to look for "Rollo's stairs," where Mercer's beloved dog, Rollo, left his paw prints in wet concrete during construction. A short drive from Fonthill, the Mercer Museum (located at 84 S. Honor history at the Flight 93 National Memorial

The Tower of Voices at the Flight 93 Memorial in rural Pennsylvania

During the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, 40 people lost their lives when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Somerset County, about 75 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Shortly after the flight departed Newark, New Jersey, for San Francisco, four Al Qaeda hijackers took control of the cockpit with intentions to crash the plane in Washington, D.C. Aware of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the crew and passengers banded together to divert the plane, potentially saving thousands of lives. The plane was successfully diverted from D.C. but crashed in Pennsylvania instead, killing everyone onboard.

The brave crew and passengers are now honored at the Flight 93 National Memorial, where the Tower of Voices, a 93-foot-tall musical instrument, rings with 40 wind chimes representing each crew member and passenger. While the memorial can't be labeled "fun" like the rest of the recommendations on this list, visiting the historic site is an essential experience in Pennsylvania.

Stargaze in Cherry Springs State Park

The Milky Way at Cherry Springs State Park

Pack a red light flashlight and prepare to see the night sky as you've (likely) never seen it on the East Coast. Located in Potter County, Cherry Springs State Park is one of the darkest destinations on the Eastern Seaboard, with very little light pollution. A Dark Sky Park , Cherry Springs affords visitors the rare opportunity to see constellations, asteroids and more with the naked eye. You might even spot the northern lights , though it's less likely.

The best (and essentially only) way to experience Cherry Springs State Park is by camping overnight. Keep in mind that there are just 30 campsites on-site, so advance reservations are a must. Travelers rave about their experiences at Cherry Springs and recommend taking advantage of the park's stargazing programs, which include nightscape photo workshops and private guided star tours. For the clearest views, plan your visit between April and October.

Betsy Ross House

It's never been confirmed that Betsy Ross created the first American flag. However, she remains the person most widely credited with sewing the first stars and stripes inside her tiny Philadelphia home in 1777. Today visitors can visit the Betsy Ross House to learn who the late upholsterer, businesswoman and patriot was; travelers can also see her burial plot here. If you're planning a visit with children, inquire about the audio tours for kids, which feature a series of mysteries to solve. Previous visitors say the actors, including "Betsy" herself, and other staff are wonderful.

While many people pass through for photos, Elfreth's Alley also offers a small museum (at house numbers 124 and 126), where you can learn about the artisans and tradespeople who helped build our country. If you're interested in guided tours of Elfreth's Alley, the Betsy Ross House and the Old City, consider the Old City Historic Walking Tour or the Historic and Revolutionary Philadelphia Tour .

Hike through Ricketts Glen State Park

Waterfall at Ricketts Glen State Park in the fall

If you enjoy hiking, Ricketts Glen State Park should be on your list of things to do in Pennsylvania. The park has 22 named waterfalls – the largest of which stands 94 feet tall – along its aptly named Falls Trail. The trail runs 7.2 miles in total, so grab your dog (the park is pet-friendly), pack a picnic lunch and plan to spend a whole day here. Afterward, retreat to one of the park's tent or cabin campsites. It's best to wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes since the trails are admittedly difficult in some areas. For a unique experience, consider a guided ice hiking tour in the winter months.

Museum of the American Revolution

The Museum of the American Revolution tells the story of our nation's founding through captivating and interactive exhibits that include "George Washington's War Tent" and "Revolution Place," where kids ages 5 to 12 can join the Continental Army and see what life was like at a military encampment. Rotating exhibits have included various versions of the first, 13-star American flag and an installment dedicated to Alexander Hamilton and his connections to Philadelphia. The museum's newly unveiled special exhibit about James Forten, a Black founding father, is set to be on display through November 2023. Previous visitors appreciate the museum's chronological path, adding that it's one of their favorite museums in Philly.

Woodloch Resort

There are very few all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. , but Pennsylvania has two of them in the Poconos: the family-friendly Woodloch Resort and The Lodge at Woodloch , an upscale, adults-only spa resort that's consistently recognized as one of the best hotels in the U.S. Previous guests rave about both hotels, noting that Woodloch Resort is fun for both kids and kids at heart.

All-inclusive rates at Woodloch Resort include overnight accommodations; two or three meals daily, depending on your plan; and access to a plethora of amenities, activities and events, including seasonal festivals. At The Lodge, rates cover luxury accommodations, three gourmet meals per day, and access to all of the spa's facilities, including hydrotherapy pools, fitness studios and more. Guests of Woodloch Resort are welcome to make reservations at the spa up to 14 days in advance.

Attend Musikfest for free

Musikfest, the nation's largest free-admission music festival, takes place in Bethlehem every August. Stroll throughout town to hear live music across a variety of genres during the 10-day event. Ticketed shows for big-name acts are available, too.

Just as good as the music is the food and drink, with favorites including "Aw Shucks" Roasted Corn: corn on the cob dipped in a vat of butter, doused in parmesan cheese and sprinkled with Aw Shucks, a seasoning blend of 13 herbs and spices (which you can purchase to take some home). You'll also find a variety of local artisan vendors. What makes this festival even more special is that parts of it are hosted amid the famous SteelStacks (formerly Bethlehem Steel), an attraction in itself and a sight to behold, especially when lit up at night.

Koziar's Christmas Village

A Christmas tree with ornaments and lights

Speaking of Christmas, Koziar's Christmas Village is another iconic experience in Pennsylvania. Though visitors agree the family-owned park – first opened in 1948 – is a bit outdated, they maintain that it's a magical place for families. Outdoor and indoor holiday light displays include a toy train attraction that's especially appealing to kids.

Plan to visit this attraction on a weeknight, as weekends see the most crowds (and thus it can be difficult to maneuver a stroller). Previous visitors also recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to opening; otherwise, you'll likely get stuck in a traffic line to the parking area. Koziar's Christmas Village is open from early November through early January annually.

Today, it's known for a variety of beers plus several dining venues including The Catacombs, an underground, completely candlelit restaurant. Previous patrons say the food is good and the service even better. Bube's Brewery is located in Mount Joy, about 15 miles northwest of Lancaster.

From breathtaking coastal passenger convoys to captivating cross-country superliners and everything in between, the nation is brimming with exciting vacation opportunities via train.

Many top-rated rail journeys showcase abundant national wonders, including famous mountain ranges, national parks, landmarks, and more. Plus, opting for a train trip, in general, offers passengers a relaxing way to enjoy America's diverse landscape and stop at various major cities. Of course, wanderers looking to get out there and immerse themselves in this country's picture-perfect natural scenery by way of passenger trains undoubtedly have some excellent options. If you are unsure where to begin, here are the best scenic long-distance train trips in the U.S. to consider for your next rail tour.

Capitol Limited

Aboard the Capitol Limited, passengers can enjoy a leisurely trip between Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Approximately an 18-hour overnight journey, the Capitol Limited travels over 760 miles and stops in major cities such as Pittsburgh and Cleveland. During this rail tour, travelers can expect all-around striking views of the Allegheny Mountains, Potomac River, Harpers Ferry National Park, and much more. Capitol Limited passengers can also marvel at the one-of-a-kind Pittsburgh cityscape and gaze upon Ohio farmlands before rolling into the Windy City when traveling westbound.

Passengers can also select from a variety of accommodations and amenties distributed among the train's upper and lower levels. An unrestricted dining service for travelers in private rooms is also available. An added bonus is that this train has a pet program, allowing your small dog or cat to appreciate the views right along with you. Note, however, that there is no WiFi and observation car on this route.

Coast Starlight

Traveling between Seattle to Los Angeles aboard the Coast Starlight gives passengers a front-row seat to the natural splendor of the West Coast. With stops in places like Portland and Sacramento, this Amtrak route covers 1,377 miles and takes approximately 36 hours. But Coast Starlight passengers typically do not mind the travel time, thanks to the views and comfortable accommodation options meeting various financial capabilities.

From lush forested land and snowcapped mountains to waves lapping against golden beaches, the Coast Starlight does not disappoint whatsoever in the scenery department. In fact, this famed Amtrak route ranks high among most travelers with its stunning vistas and roomy accommodations. Plus, in the middle of the train, passengers will find quite the observation car, which allows train riders to drink up all the sights unobstructed. So if it is the scenic variety you so strongly desire, the Coast Starlight is at your service.

Sunset Limited

Yet another amazing Amtrak getaway that awaits train travelers is the Sunset Limited. Passengers will embark on a magnificent route from New Orleans and arrive in Los Angeles. This 48-hour rail excursion has multiple stops in popular cities like San Antonio, Tucson, and Phoenix. Along the way, otherworldly vistas of the Bayou, the southwestern desert, and the Rocky Mountains can be seen as well.

But that's not all that the Sunset Limited has to offer. With three departures traversing this route weekly, passengers can also revel in the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, ample southwestern historical sites, and the nearby allure of places like Houston and Palm Springs. The Sunset Limited is a superliner with the expected accommodations. It is the perfect route for crossing a few spectacular national parks off your bucket list, like Big Bend National Park and Saguaro National Park. And an additional bonus here is you can easily access other popular journeys when traveling on the Sunset Limited, such as the Texas Eagle, San Joaquins, and even the Coast Starlight.

Amtrak Cascades

The Amtrak Cascades train trip is a must for travelers looking to check out the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia while marveling at dramatic vistas of untouched wilderness. Running from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Eugene, Oregon, Amtrak Cascades riders will see lush forested areas and the great Columbia River Gorge. There are also flowing waterfalls, a volcano, ample coastal cities, plus a plethora of mountain ranges, including the Cascade Mountains. This nearly 10.5-hour, 467-mile train tour has stops in Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, and Salem.

With all the first-rate scenery and natural attractions, passengers may almost overlook that the Amtrak Cascades is not your ordinary Amtrak train. But this European-style train is quite a sight to behold, with its sleek design, large viewing windows, comfy reclining seats, and beautiful Bistro Car that gives travelers a taste of the Pacific Northwest. And even though this U.S. train trip covers parts of Vancouver, the Amtrak Cascades still undoubtedly offers incredible views through  Oregon .

Pacific Surfliner

The Pacific Surfliner is another train route worth considering for your next scenic rail tour. Leaving San Diego, the Pacific Surfliner covers over 350 miles in roughly six hours and has several stops along the way in addition to major cities like Anaheim, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. With its final destination being San Luis Obispo, this southbound train allows passengers a chance to kick back and relax while enjoying the view. These include miles of pristine beaches, picturesque vineyards, the rugged coastline, the Pacific Ocean, and ample historic sites in San Luis Obispo.

Since this scenic route is fairly short when it comes to travel time, riding the Pacific Surfliner south or northbound is an excellent choice for a Southern California half-day trip. Passengers will find standard accommodations (coach or business class seating) and great onboard amenities. So if you plan to be in the San Diego area or have always wanted to see more of the Golden State, why not make the most of your time and appreciate the scenery via train?

Rocky Mountaineer

For one-of-a-kind views of one of the most popular mountains in the U.S. and a truly memorable travel experience , the Rockies to the Red Rocks route aboard the Rocky Mountaineer is another great option. Departing from Moab, Utah, this nearly 370-mile train tour is a two-day adventure that passes through Glenwood Spring and ends in the Mile High City. Here, Rocky Mountaineer passengers can revel in gorgeous vistas of Mount Garfield, Ruby Canyon, abundant pristine wilderness, and much more.

Once in the resort town of Glenwood Springs, travelers disembark for an overnight stay in the available hotel accommodations. After a little rest, Glenwood Springs-style, it is off to Denver. A few scenic highlights on day two include views of the Colorado River, breathtaking canyons, desert lands, the Colorado Rockies, the Continental Divide, the Moffat Tunnel, and the picturesque Denver cityscape. And with first-class amenities, dinner, breakfast, lunch, and signature cocktails at every stop, this iconic Rocky Mountaineer route is a pleasant and beautifully scenic train trip.

Empire Builder

The Empire Builder is a train tour that showcases the American West in all its glory. With daily departures from Chicago to Portland and Seattle, travelers have much to see on this 46-hour, 2,760-plus mile getaway. Aboard the Empire Builder, riders can enjoy stops at St Paul or Minneapolis, and Spokane, with the final destination being Portland or Seattle.

Of course, regardless of which route you choose here, you can savor views of Wisconsin's woodlands, shimmering lakes in Minnesota, idyllic prairies in North Dakota, and even catch a glimpse of the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies. After reaching Montana, the southern border of Glacier National Park is also all yours to see, and as you make your way to either Portland or Seattle, expect to see some of the most pristine wilderness around. Overall, the Empire Builder is touted as one of the most picturesque ways to relish the Chicago skyline, marvel at so many of the natural wonders in Glacier National Park, and appreciate the overall splendor of the Pacific Northwest — making it an incredibly scenic train trip that should be on everyone's bucket lists.

The Amtrak Vermonter is a top-rated rail tour to add to your traveling-by-train bucket list. Leaving from Washington, D.C., and arriving in St. Albans, Vermont, this train takes passengers on a spectacular journey through the Green Mountain State. An almost 14-hour ride of approximately 611 miles, the Vermonter showcases rural Vermont with its rolling green hills, picture-perfect little villages, striking countryside, impressive resorts, colonial-era historical sites, and pristine landscape. Aboard, passengers will traipse via train through beautiful destinations, including New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

This downright charming Amtrak train also has a daily southbound journey with stops in other beloved east coast cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore. What's more, the Vermonter has roomy seating (in both business class and coach), great amenities, and an onboard café, plus it is pet-friendly. So there is no reason not to take in all that the Green Mountain State and these other amazing destinations  have to offer through scenery and more.

California Zephyr

Running from Chicago to San Francisco, the California Zephyr is one of the best train tours in the country, especially when it comes to phenomenal scenery. This 2,438-mile westbound train trip takes a little over 51 hours (or three days) to complete and brims with scenic highlights. California Zephyr riders can get up close and personal with the country's impressive Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, Nebraska's farmland plains, desert lands, prairies, canyons, valley vistas, and then some.

With stops in Omaha, Denver, and Salt Lake City , passengers have more than a few stunning backdrops to admire. Plus, the California Zephyr knows how to put on a good show with crystal clear floor-to-ceiling windows in the main lounge car that offer otherworldly views — so you can expect to be utterly mesmerized on this rail tour. That said, the California Zephyr is a stellar pick for anyone looking to enjoy a scenic, leisurely ride.

The Adirondack Line by Amtrak is one of the best long-distance train trips for New Yorkers looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, if only for a few hours. Departing from New York City, the Adirondack rail tour stops in Albany and whisks passengers off to Montreal. Along this route, as the New York City skyline starts to fade, Adirondack riders are transported through the renowned Hudson Valley wine country, past the shimmering shores of Lake Champlain, alongside the Adirondack Mountains, and onward.

This 380-plus-mile ride takes approximately 10 hours, making this rail tour ideal for an impromptu weekend trip. And for those headed southbound, the Adirondack makes getting to New York City and connecting routes to Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., a breeze. With standard seating, the Adirondack Café Car, and the usual amenities, the Adirondack is the perfect little getaway train to see all the beauty that awaits in upstate New York and beyond.

Yellowstone National Park Getaway

Though this is a shorter journey of roughly 360 miles round trip, Amtrak's Yellowstone National Park Getaway is a wonderful way to experience one of the U.S.'s favorite national wonders, unspoiled wilderness, and more. A five-day excursion by train that transports passengers from Salt Lake City in Utah to Yellowstone National Park. This route is littered with picturesque mountain and countryside vistas. It gives parkgoers ample time to check out all of the great attractions in Yellowstone, including Old Faithful, an abundance of wildlife, and the enchanting Isa Lake on the Continental Divide.

Travelers will disembark and stay at hotel accommodations within the park for roughly two days. A sightseeing tour via the park's Lower Loop is also a part of this Amtrak package. After spending ample time in Yellowstone National Park , this once-in-a-lifetime experience takes you back to Crossroads of the West (Salt Lake City). This package includes a two-night stay in Salt Lake City as well.

Southwest Chief

The Southwest Chief is just one more incredible long-distance train trip that departs from Chicago and ends in Los Angeles. What makes this rail tour a little different is that the Southwest Chief heads southwest, as its name implies. With stops in Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff in Arizona , passengers get a chance to appreciate a slightly different section of the U.S. map.

A 40-plus hour journey covering more than 2,250 miles is what awaits Southwest Chief riders. But, undoubtedly, the scenery alone here makes this train getaway totally worth it. So if you have been dreaming of the plains of Iowa, vibrant colored southwestern mountain ranges, vistas of the Painted Desert, and the Red Cliffs of Sedona by chance, then purchase a ticket for this impressive two-story superliner now. The Southwest Chief has ample onboard accommodations for singles, families, friends, and large groups. Nevertheless, booking in advance and thoroughly planning for this particular train trip is highly recommended.

Great America Majestic Landscape

Travelers looking for a true coast-to-coast rail tour needn't look any further than the Great America Majestic Landscape by Amtrak. Departing from New York City, the Great America Majestic Landscape train trip is a lovely way to marvel at all the beauty of the U.S. without leaving any stone unturned. With its final destination being San Francisco , it is unsurprising that this is a 12-plus-day excursion.

The scenic highlights include the Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Canyon, Napa Valley, Sonoma, and ample opportunities to enjoy famous landmarks like the New York skyline, the Chicago Navy Pier, and more. This multi-day train adventure includes sightseeing tours in various cities, hotels, and onboard accommodations. Ultimately, whether you want to see all of America's stunning landscape here or prefer to start slow with any of the other railway tours on this list, there is nothing like traveling by train — so get out there and take a long-distance train trip or two in the U.S.

Before We Wrap Up, Long-Distance Train Travel Tips

For first-timers or passengers that have only experienced short train trips, there are several helpful tips to make your journey more carefree. Much like any other form of travel, preparation is key. In addition to having the necessary train travel essentials in tow, newbie passengers should take the time to draft a pre-departure checklist. Doing so lets you ensure you have important travel documents, medications, and other items handy on the day of departure. Speaking of packing, if you do not plan on checking luggage, only pack what you can carry.

Other train travel must-haves include dressing comfortably for your longer-than-normal journey and booking onboard accommodations in advance for overnight and cross-country rail tours. It also never hurts to plan for delays and download the necessary apps to streamline your adventure. And for the best views while onboard, westbound travelers should be on the right side of the train, and eastbound travelers should be on the left to avoid missing out on gorgeous scenery.
