Frequently Asked Questions

Who will be covered by this policy .

The cover is for you (the HSBC Premier account holder) and your domestic partner - provided that you are both under 70 years of age on the start date of your trip - and any dependent children or grandchildren travelling with you.

Your children are also covered if they're staying with a close relative, travelling with a relative who's over the age of 23, or going on a school/college trip independently with a teacher.

Children covered by this policy must be under 23. Grandchildren covered by the policy must be under the age of 23 and don’t have to live with you.

All insured persons must be residents of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

Do I need to inform you about any medical conditions?

Before you book your trip, you'll need to call the HSBC Medical Risk Assessment Helpline on  0800 051 7457  if in the last 12 months you or any insured person have:

  • been referred to a specialist
  • been admitted to a hospital

for any condition not listed on the accepted conditions list in the 'Your Health' section of the policy booklet

Before you travel, you should also tell us if there have been any changes to your health or if you've been referred to a consultant or specialist or admitted to a hospital.

Undiagnosed symptoms are not covered. There's no cover for any claim where you knew at the time you opened your HSBC Premier Account or booked your trip (whichever is later) that you or your travelling companion might be unable to travel or might need to come home early - for example if one of you fell ill.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, check to see if they're covered in the 'accepted conditions' section of the policy booklet. If not, you need to call the Medical Risk Assessment Helpline who will confirm in writing whether they can be covered.

Are holidays in the UK covered?

Yes. Holidays taken solely in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man are covered if they include at least 2 consecutive nights away from home and either pre-booked accommodation or pre-paid public transport.

Please see our definition of 'pre-booked holiday accommodation' in your policy document.

Are business trips covered?

Yes. You're covered for up to 31 days in any calendar year if you travel outside the UK in connection with an insured person’s job to carry out non-manual work. This includes administrative tasks, meetings and conferences.

We don't cover any claim in connection with an insured person’s job where the trip involves:

  • manual or physical work of any kind
  • working with children
  • providing healthcare, policing, security or military service
  • an insured person’s role as a politician, religious leader, professional entertainer or sportsperson

Can I extend the trip duration?

You may be able to purchase a policy upgrade for an individual trip. This will extend the trip duration to a maximum of 120 days.

Please call us on  0800 328 1562  at the point of booking your trip, and one of our advisors.

Will I be covered if I go on a cruise?

Yes. While this isn’t a specific cruise policy, cruises are covered as standard since they're simply another type of holiday. However, there is no cover for some items that cruise policies may specifically cover, e.g. missed ports, unused excursions, and change of itinerary.

HSBC account included Travel insurance ?

Cool Cruiser

We are due to go on a couple of Seacations in September .

trying to get HSBC to confirm their travel Insurance aspects cover will cover the requirements that the Cruise lines are demanding currently, is proving to be somewhat tricky!

Has anyone sailed with any Cunard, Princess P and O with HSBC included account insurance?

Really don’t want to get to the port and they say it does not cover the requirement.

just looking for a bit of peace of mind, as I think it does but, but trying to get someone from HSBC to confirm this is beyond me currently?

Just looking for any confirmation of other people’s experience with insurance requirements ?

I used it on MSC without problem, different cruise line but........

If you follow this link and click "ask Aviva for confirmation of cover" you will get a confirmation that covers staycations and cruise ships, I don't know what you are looking for but I suspect this confirmation will provide what you need, it did for me on MSC.

Hsbc boss knighted despite bank’s controversial links to china.

The chairman of HSBC has been awarded a knighthood despite previously facing criticism over the bank’s controversial ties to China.

Mark Tucker, who has chaired HSBC since 2017, was given the award for services to the economy in the King’s birthday list after a decades long career in insurance and banking.

Mr Tucker, 66, has been a high profile figure in Asian business since the 1990s and has steered HSBC through the recent diplomatic chill between the West and China .

While he has overseen an improvement in the bank’s share price and profits in recent years, HSBC’s actions in Hong Kong have been heavily criticised as Beijing has exerted an increasingly authoritarian grip on the region.

Mr Tucker was severely criticised three years ago by a coalition of international politicians after HSBC froze the accounts of a pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong, Ted Hui, and his family who fled to Britain.

At the time, more than 50 members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance in China wrote to Mr Tucker demanding an explanation. He refused to meet the group.

Iain Duncan Smith, who led the initiative, said HSBC still had questions to answer over the matter.

He said: “HSBC froze the accounts of people from Hong Kong who had come to the UK at the behest of the Chinese government, but when it comes to knighthoods in the UK they love being listed in London.”

HSBC makes more money from customers in Hong Kong than the UK and as such still maintains strong ties to China despite the geopolitical tensions.

As part of his role running the bank, Mr Tucker is a frequent visitor to Shanghai and often meets senior Chinese government officials.

Since he took over as chairman, HSBC has been forced to walk a political tightrope .

UK-China relations are the worst they have been in decades, with Beijing suspected of being behind the recent hacking of the Ministry of Defence in a major data breach.

Mr Tucker is well regarded in financial circles and known for his ferocious work ethic. HSBC recently posted its best ever financial performance and many shareholders consider him one of the most capable chairman in finance.

He rose to prominence as chief executive of Prudential before joining AIA, an Asian insurance giant.

Mr Tucker currently splits his time between London, New York and Hong Kong and sits on the Court of The Bank of England and the board of Goldman Sachs.

A former professional footballer, Mr Tucker had a spell playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers and is an avid Chelsea supporter.

He is due to step down from the bank in 2026 and is currently hunting for the third HSBC chief executive during his tenure after Noel Quinn announced his plans to retire.

Mr Tucker’s four predecessors in the chairman role have all been honoured: Sir William Purves, Sir John Bond, Lord Green and Sir Douglas Flint.

HSBC declined to comment.

Travel insurance while pregnant

Well........ I hate insurances and despise banks even more, but got a nice surprise this morning.

I'm 31 weeks tomorrow, I'm travelling to France this weekend for a wedding and was starting to get freaked out about going into early labour and not being covered and having to spends thousands in medical fees and rapatriation (a whole disaster movie!)

Usually travel insurers cover you upto 28 weeks so you have to get a special insurance to be covered.

BUT I have HSBC premier travel insurance, and they just confirmed to me that I am covered for the whole of the pregnancy, as long as I don't travel against GP's advice.

Ain't it great??? I'm so happy that for once, i don't get ripped off by my bank! yoohooo!!!!

Have a great day ladies........

Wooohooo :). Some Great news!!
