The Banyuwangi region of East Java is home to some of the best beaches Java has to offer. I did an island hopping tour to three locations with Bangsring Underwater tours. We visited Tabuhan Island, Menjangan Island and Rumah Apung.

MENJANGAN ISLAND
Menjangan Island is actually accessible quite easily from West Bali National Park. We could have swum over to Bali from Menjangan Island, which was pretty cool. The island is 3,800Ha and it’s Savannah terrain is home to unique Javan Rusa deer known as ‘Menjangan’, which is how the island received its name.
There are a couple of beaches on Menjangan with white sand and clear water. There are many great spots to relax on this tropical island and with warm crystal clear water it is perfect. However, the best activities are in the water.
The snorkeling and diving at Menjangan Island are great! Corl gardens and extensive marine life make it a perfect spot for snorkelers and scuba divers.
You need to pay the entrance fee here which was $26 USD per person. These photos below were taken while sitting on Menjangan Island but are actually a little sandbar I swam to 50m away from Menjangan Island.
TABUHAN ISLAND
Tabuhan Island was my favorite part of the whole trip. This island was completely empty except for us. The water was incredible. It looked like drinking water it was so clear with the sun making beautiful patterns on the sand beneath the surface.
Tabuhan is only 5 hectares large but as you can see the reef below the surface is actually quite large in itself. In just fifteen minutes you can circle the entire island.
Tabuhan Islands got its name from the Banyuwanghi term ‘Teabuhan’, which means ‘music’. It’s because the wind is very loud on this island, which is why it is called the noisy island. This is why it is a popular spot for kitesurfing due to the consistent wind making perfect conditions for kite surfers.
The snorkeling here was great with lots of fish, corals, large clams and a huge drop off all the way around the edge of the reef. My favorite part of this island was seeing all the volcanoes in Banyuwangi looming in the background.
I think you can organize a boat to take you out and back to Tabuhan for 500,000 rupiahs. We did the entire three spots for 2.1 million rupiahs but not sure if we could have gotten it lower or not. That included our 300,000 rupiah fee at Menjangan Island.
BANGSRING UNDERWATER SNORKELING SANCTUARY
The final stop of the day was Bangsring Underwater Rumah Apung. It is a floating dock that is surrounded by fish. There are small nets you can swim in here. Most were empty but some had small reef sharks in them. They told us they get released when they are older but we haven’t been able to confirm that.
We did believe them, however. This is because most of the attraction here is swimming away from the nets with wild fish in the coral gardens and reefs in the surrounding areas.
BOOKING BANGSRING UNDERWATER TOUR
This was the most expensive thing I did in East Java. Once I heard about Tabuhan Island, I really wanted to go. Unfortunately, there were no group tours we could join so we had to rent our own boat that worked out to about $75 each for me and my friend.
Normally that is way too much but I get stuck on an idea and have to go through with it. The same boat we rented can take an entire group so it would normally be about $15 if you had a group of ten.
I booked with Bangsring Underwater Tour through this Whatsapp number: 0815-5941-059
ADVENTURE BAG FROM TABUHAN ISLAND
This is an adventure bag. It is full of trash. Every time I go on an adventure I collect one adventure bag full of trash. It’s my small way of saying thanks to mother nature for allowing me to enjoy her beautiful creations.
If we have time to go on an adventure we have time to collect an adventure bag on the way back out of the trail once we have enjoyed the waterfall, the hike or the beach. Adventure hard!
Tag your #ADVENTUREBAG on Instagram and mention @adventurebag in your Instagram stories to be featured and inspire your friends, family, and followers to join the movement!

Menjangan Island: West Bali's Best Kept Secret Dive Site
Surrounded by unspoilt white sandy beaches, stunning coral reefs, and enchanting underwater, environment Menjangan Island is a perfect definition of what natural beauty is all about. Located about 10Km North West off the shore of Bali’s mainland, the small island of Menjangan forms part of the West Bali National Park Conservation Area. The word "Menjangan" in the Javanese language means "Deer". According to Wikipedia, the name was given by the local population who observed wild deer herds swimming to the island every spring covering a distance of approx 1.2 miles.
This small island is actually where diving first started seriously on Bali back in about 1978 under the sponsorship of the Indonesian Navy, when it arranged a get-together of the country’s main diving clubs -Possi, Ganesha, Nusantara, and Trisakti. That get-together led to Menjangan establishing itself as the premier international dive location in Bali and many of the attendees went on to become the pioneers of commercial dive operations across Indonesia.
The island itself is surrounded by a coral reef, characterized by deep drop offs of near to 60 meters and by complex rock formations. These distinctive features have given rise to a great number of large and small caves, festooned with sponge and soft corals and often inhabited by large groupers, moray eels and by young snappers and batfish in the smaller caves. The sea beds are also rich in large barrel sponges and vibrant sea fans, some of which are truly enormous. Given the depth, the moderate flow of currents and its protection from strong winds, it is common to see tuna, shoals of jack-fish, batfish, angelfish, sea turtles, and on occasion also sharks, especially off the outer corners of the island.
The island is also known as the location for the best wall diving in Bali, with a very bright & colorful underwater world and lots of different sites to choose from. These dive sites are rich in marine life and sandy beaches to relax over lunch.
At a depth of 45 meters the Anchor wreck is found. Also called the Anker or Kapal Budak (Slave Ship), the site is an old wooden ship wreck sitting on the sea floor on the western tip of Menjangan which is either an 19th century Dutch ship that sunk during WWII or one that sunk much earlier during the Dutch colonial era while supposedly carrying Balinese slaves to Batavia (now Jakarta). The wreck contains a cargo of ceramics and glass bottles and is completely colonized by soft coral; an excellent place to meet turtles and sharks.
Named after a large colony of garden eels, the Eel Gardens dive site lies on the western point of Menjangan in a shallow area with some dazzling white sand that is a pleasant dive in itself. The dive starts on a nice wall (about 40m) with a lot of beautiful gorgonians and other sea fans then continue over the top of the reef to a stretch of white sand. Arguably, some say that this is the best part of Menjangan Island.
And there is a big surprise for macro-photographers, video-operators and marine biologists at the Secret Bay”. In the small bay near the ferry port of Gilimanuk, a strange play in currents has rendered the water temperature here to be more, at most 25 degree C, which has created a habitat for Pacific and Indian Ocean species, with often hybrids between the two. The muddy shallow beds, mixed with algae and debris, are host to truly strange marine creatures, some of which have recently been discovered by marine biologists for the first time, such as the 4 types of anglerfish including the Sargassum Anglerfish, Spotfin Anglerfish and one in particular that has created great interest among biologists, locally called the Tono’s Anglerfish. Apart from the anglerfish, the bay is host to numerous different sea horses, dragonets, ghostpipefish, nudibranches, lionfish such us the Blue Finned lionfish, ribbon eels and much more. This unique bay has been and still is the preferred location of some of the world’s most famous underwater photographers and filmmakers, as well as researchers and marine biologists.

Snorkeling at Menjangan Island

A dozen miles off the coast of Pemuteran, only accessible by sea on guided tours, Menjangan Island features a nice coral reef in an idyllic setting. On the reef drop-off you will spot angelfish, clownfish and large shoals of chromis swimming above pretty healthy corals. This area offers some of the best snorkeling in Bali.
How to get to the Menjangan Island snorkeling spot
Pulau Menjangan is a small, unspoiled island accessible only by boat. It is part of the Bali Barat National Park. The easiest option for visiting this spot is to book a full-day tour with one of the many local operators.
Most tours leave from Pemuteran, to the north of the island. From that point, it takes an hour by boat to reach Pulau Menjangan. The price is about $80 per person for a day tour, including several snorkeling sessions and a lunch break.
Entering the water on Menjangan Island
Water entrance is either from the beach or from your boat.
Snorkeling tips to enjoy the best of Menjangan Island
The location described on the map, which is along the northern shore of Menjangan, is the most popular on the island, but tours may take you to a different location nearby, with more or less the same aspect.
The northern snorkeling area covers a wide area between the beach and the reef drop-off, about 150 to 200 yards apart. From the beach, you will cross a few dozen yards of sandy sea bed and rock (↕3-6ft/1-2 m), then a seabed covered with soft coral (↕3-10ft/1-3 m) as far as the reef drop-off.
Although there are interesting things to see on the reef flat including batfish, giant clams and blue sea stars, the best snorkeling is found when you get closer to the reef drop-off.
Here, the seabed is spectacular: shoals of green chromis and sergeant majors swim around the coral bommies, while parrotfish, butterflyfish and spinefoot with spectacular colors, come and go on the reef drop-off.
This spot is particularly rich in soft coral, especially the leather coral. Several species of angelfish, including the sixbar angelfish and the regal angelfish are easy to see. Try to find a sea anemone between the rocks: you are likely to see the ocellaris clownfish , better known to kids as “Nemo”.
In the deep blue of the reef drop-off, you may also have the chance to see a green sea turtle or hawksbill sea turtle , although they can be very shy.
Pulau Menjangan, like all Bali coral reefs, tends to be damaged in places. The reef drop-off, which was exceptionally well preserved a few years ago, has now broken or dead coral in some areas.
This area is one of the most popular spots near Bali. A large number of boats and guided tours stop here. Watch out for other people when you are in the water and for boats, too.
Restaurants and accommodation on Menjangan Island
Pulau Menjangan is a natural site. There are no hotels or restaurants, but most tours include lunch.

These spots are accessible to anyone with basic snorkeling skills, and feeling comfortable in the water and with his snorkeling gear. You will enter the water from the shore (beach, pontoon, ladder, rocks) or from a boat. The water height in the sea entrance area is reasonable, but you will not necessarily be within your depth. Moderate currents can occur in the area, even when the sea conditions are good. The distance to swim to reach the most interesting snorkeling areas of the spot does not exceed 200 meters. This level only apply when the spot experiences optimal sea and/or weather conditions. It is not applicable if the sea and/or weather conditions deteriorate, in particular in the presence of rough sea, rain, strong wind, unusual current, large tides, waves and/or swell. Seabed aspect
Snorkeling spots are part of a wild environment and their aspect can be significantly altered by weather, seasons, sea conditions, human impact and climate events (storms, hurricanes, seawater-warming episodes…). The consequences can be an alteration of the seabed (coral bleaching, coral destruction, and invasive seagrass), a poor underwater visibility, or a decrease of the sea life present in the area. Snorkeling Report makes every effort to ensure that all the information displayed on this website is accurate and up-to-date, but no guarantee is given that the underwater visibility and seabed aspect will be exactly as described on this page the day you will snorkel the spot. If you recently snorkeled this area and noticed some changes compared to the information contained on this page, please contact us.

Remember that all marine activities, including snorkeling, are potentially dangerous, and that you enter the water at your own risk. You must take an individual weather, sea conditions and hazards assessment before entering the water. If snorkeling conditions are degraded, postpone your snorkeling or select an alternate site. Menjangan Island – Pulau Menjangan
Table of Content:
Where is Menjangan Island located?
Menjangan Island, also called “Island of the Deer”, is located near Pemuteran and is about 30-50 minutes by boat from the mainland of Bali. It takes its name from the Java deer, which are threatened with extinction. The island belongs to the Bali Barat National Park and is located in a water conservation area.
It is an arid island that does not have any fresh water sources. Menjangan Island is home to hardly any land animals, only a small number of reptile species. Otherwise, the Menjangan is uninhabited. The island is about 2 kilometers long and 500 meters wide.
What activities are available on Menjangan Island?
Menjangan Island has one of the most beautiful diving areas in Bali. The island is gaining popularity especially among wall divers as there are about 8 to 10 dive sites around the island.
However, besides the steep walls, there are other attractions for divers: densely overgrown reefs with a high number of different corals, caves, green lagoons, steep overhangs of up to 60 meters and even a shipwreck from the 19th century.
Since the coral reefs are still mostly intact today and provide a home for countless animals and plants, the visitor is offered an incredibly beautiful experience. Due to its close location to the Java Strait, you can also meet rare marine life here: napoleon fish, groupers, barracudas, turtles and even manta rays and sharks during the rainy season.
Snorkeling and hiking
For snorkelers, the north side of the island is especially good, as there are sun-drenched coral gardens. But the island also offers sights worth seeing: Three temples stand on the island. These are also visited by locals to participate in ceremonies. A large white statue shows the way to the most important temple of the island: the “Pura Ganesha Menjangan”.
Hiking on the island itself is not recommended, as many poisonous snakes live on the island. The beach is mostly reptile-free and can be used to the greatest extent possible.
Local rules of conduct
Since the island is located in a water protection area, divers need a permit. These can be obtained at the Labuhan Lalang research station. There you can also get fresh groceries and water and from there you can be taken to the island. In addition, one must pay an entrance fee of 200,000 rupiah to visit the island, and 300,000 rupiah on Sundays and holidays.
Around the island there are only mild currents and few crowded dive sites. The island of Menjangan does not offer accommodation.
Manjangan Island is particularly suitable for divers and snorkelers who want an extraordinary and breathtaking diving experience. Since the island is very easy to reach from the mainland, it is ideal for day trips. Since it is a nature reserve, you get to see a beautiful and untouched landscape and with luck you may even encounter a Java deer.

Diving and snorkelling in Menjangan
THE ESSENTIALS
• Menjangan Island falls within West Bali National Park.
Park entry fees:
Foreigners: Rp200,000 per person on weekdays, and Rp300,000 per person on weekends and public holidays.
Indonesians: Rp10,000 per person on weekdays and Rp15,000 per person on weekends and public holidays.
Fee for diving/snorkelling includes park entry.
• According to the official activity fees (see photo below) the price is Rp1,200,000 per person snorkelling and Rp1,600,000 per person diving – however, every time we've gone snorkelling the price has varied depending on how many people are in a boat. In our experience you can expect to pay around Rp1,700,000 for two people (Rp850,000 per person), and considerably less per person if you're in a larger group. This fee includes park entry (which is higher on weekends, see above), boat transportation, a guide and snorkelling gear.
• Snorkelling is a half-day activity, and you'll usually go into the water twice, in different locations. If you're keen to spend more time under water, have a word with your guide – perhaps for an additional fee you'll be able to visit another site.
• Boats to Menjangan Island leave from Labuhan Lalang and Teluk Terima Beach (see map below for the locations).
• Many dive operators are based in Pemuteran, and they also offer trips to Menjangan Island (usually departing from Pemuteran beach).
– Menjangan –
Diving and snorkelling around menjangan island.
The diving and snorkelling around Menjangan is exceptional. The abundance of marine life around Menjangan Island – which lies within the boundaries of West Bali National Park – is absolutely staggering, and the corals are bright and colourful. What will you see when diving or snorkelling? Turtles here are fairly common; you'll probably see pygmy seahorses, clownfish, sea fans, nudibranches, parrotfish, scorpionfish – the list goes on. Reef sharks can sometimes be seen and, occasionally, whalesharks too. We've also seen flying fish from the boat and, occasionally, a pod of dolphins. Menjangan really is an astounding place to explore under water, and the best place to snorkel and dive in Bali. Visibility here is usually excellent (50m+), and the island is known for the impressive walls that form spectacular dive sites.
You will need to go to either Labuhan Lalang or Teluk Terima Beach (both are marked on the map on this page), where you will pay at the park ranger office. From these points you will take a boat to Menjangan Island, a trip of about 20 minutes. There are two components to the rate: a flat national park entrance fee (Rp200,000 per person on weekdays and Rp300,000 per person on weekends and holidays – rate as of 1 August 2020), plus the dive or snorkel fee, which varies according to how many people are on the boat. See if you can join another group if you want to keep the price lower. There are basic toilets and showers at the Labuhan Lalang and Teluk Terima Beach, and there is a toilet on Menjangan Island.
Who to dive and snorkel with
It's very easy to arrange a snorkel or dive trip yourself – simply go to the ranger station at Teluk Terima Beach or Labuhan Lalang, pay the fee and get on a boat. The offices here open at 8am and we suggest you arrive then so that you can enjoy your snorkelling before any wind picks up. The resorts around Menjangan have their own dive centres, so if you're staying there they'll be your best bet for organising trips to Menjangan. There are many dive operators in nearby Pemuteran and all of them offer snorkelling and diving trips to Menjangan Island.
Go prepared
The private dive operators and resorts usually arrange refreshments, but if you're travelling on your own and arranging your trip directly through the ranger station then take some water and a few snacks on the boat – you won't be able to buy anything on the island, and snorkelling does work up a hunger. There are a few warungs at Labuhan Lalang and Teluk Terima Beach, and you'll probably appreciate having lunch here as soon as you return. The Pantai ("beach") restaurant at The Menjangan resort is situated on a deck above the edge of the sea, and is a fantastic place to have a meal after snorkelling or diving.
There might be rubbish
Trash is a problem all around South East Asia and, although Menjangan Island falls within West Bali National Park, there can be a lot (as in, disturbing amounts) of plastic in the water at times. There's no specific time of year that trash conditions are better – it depends on so many variables, including currents, and you might have a trash-filled morning snorkel and not see a single piece of plastic in the afternoon. If you'd like to do your bit to save the planet, you might like to snorkel with a net bag or wear boardshorts with pockets, and pick out some of the plastic you come across.
If you're wanting to do a few activities around West Bali National Park (trekking, cycling, do a mangrove tour or go birding), you will pay less if you do them all on the same day (because: park fees). Head to the ranger station the day before you'd like to do the activities, so that you can organise to get an early start and, for example, go birding before you snorkel.

Wisata travel Pulau Menjangan
Tips Wisata Pulau Menjangan
