8. Phuket, Thailand

If a stunning sunset is what you’re after, head to Promthep Cape, the southernmost point on the island and a popular spot for photo-ops. For views of the island and beyond, climb to the top of the massive alabaster statue called Big Buddha.

Though Rome’s historic significance cannot be overstated, don’t assume that this Italian city is stuck in the past. On the contrary, you’ll find posh storefronts and luxurious hotels not far from iconic structures like the Pantheon (built in 120 AD) and the Colosseum (built in 80 AD).

3. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Don’t write off the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora just because of its size. Though it’s a little more than 2 miles wide and just 6 miles long, Bora Bora packs in an abundance of natural beauty. To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Because of its remoteness, flying into Bora Bora Airport will be quite a journey, no matter where you're departing from. But you'll forget everything as soon as you see this Polynesian paradise that is beautiful beyond words.

Hot tip: Though Bora Bora can be wildly expensive to visit, you can cut costs by visiting between December and March (though you should avoid the Christmas holiday) and by bringing your own alcohol and sunscreen with you.

Fun fact: Bora Bora is one of the countries that no longer exists . The Kingdom of Bora Bora was an independent state until it was forcefully overtaken and annexed by France in 1888.

But how exactly do you start planning your tropical trip? We tapped our network of travel specialists to put together this list of the best island vacations to take this year, ranging from classics in the Caribbean and Mediterranean to relatively undiscovered gems in Scandinavia and French Polynesia. Given the list’s geographical and cultural diversity, you’re sure to find something to fit your specific vacation needs.

Con Dao, Vietnam

Con Dao is often overlooked as a beach destination in  Vietnam , and I almost don’t want to share it so it stays that way! Located off the Southern Coast of Vietnam, Con Dao is a smaller island with very little commercial development. With this, the beaches are quiet and the few resort options allow for a special retreat. The beaches are long with soft sand and are great for light water sports like SUP and kayaking—but are just a short kayak away from a beautiful reef for snorkeling. The downtown area has a cute seaside atmosphere with little restaurants, and there are connections to history if you’re interested in exploring more.

Best things to do:  Watch the turtles hatch: On the neighboring island, you can head over at night and stay at the ranger station where you will be informed when they spot a mother turtle laying her eggs. If you’re there in August, it’s likely you’ll catch this magical experience. Stay through the morning when the turtle sanctuary supports the release of the hatchlings and watch them find their way to the big blue sea.

If you’re interested in history, I recommend a visit to the Con Dao Prison which was built during the French colonial era and used through the Vietnam-American War.

How to get there:  From Saigon, take a commercial flight to the island. The flight is about one hour long and Vietnam Airlines runs multiple flights a day.

Lanai, Hawaii

For travelers looking to get off the beaten path, look no further than Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island—Lanai. Only nine miles off the coast of Maui , this quaint island was originally home to pineapple plantations but now offers the perfect mix of rugged adventure and ultra-luxe relaxation. Arrival to the island is an experience in and of itself, whether you take a scenic 30-minute flight from Honolulu or watch for dolphins on a 45-minute ferry from Maui.

On arrival, expect a swift transfer to your hotel, either the ocean-side paradise of the  Four Seasons Resort Lanai or the adults-only wellness retreat at the  Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort . Be sure to also visit Keahiakawelo, Lanai’s “Garden of the Gods,” to see the unique, lunar-like landscapes.

How to get there: Lanai Air offers 30-minute nonstop flights from Honolulu to the island, or you can take a 45-minute ferry over from Lahaina, Maui.

Mauritius is a fantastic island destination for honeymooners, couples, friends, families with children, and even solo travelers —really anyone looking for beautiful, warm tropical weather and lots of adventurous things to see and experience. There are also direct flights from a number of European hubs such as France, London, Frankfurt, etc, as well as Dubai. Flights are directly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), and then you will take a taxi/cab, shuttle, or private road transfer to your respective resort, roughly 1-2 hours from the airport.

No Thailand trip is complete without a stay on one of the country’s islands, since they boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Vancouver Island, Canada

Vancouver Island is home to the charming small city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, known in particular for its British influence and flower gardens (including the famous Butchart Gardens about 30 minutes from the city). Many people don’t realize, however, that Victoria is at the southern tip of the island and that the island is nearly 300 miles long. There’s far more to Vancouver Island than Victoria. One of my favorite places on the island is Tofino , a small town on the far west coast about halfway up the island that’s a great destination for outdoor adventures with fantastic food and lodging.

Best things to do: Whale watching for orcas from Victoria, and for gray whales and humpbacks from Tofino. There’s also bear watching (black bears from Tofino and brown bears/grizzlies from the Campbell River area on the northeast part of the island).

How to get there: Take a flight from Vancouver or Seattle depending on the part of Vancouver Island you’re going to, or by ferry from Vancouver or Port Angeles Washington.

Zanzibar is a really special island off the coast of Tanzania, known as Spice Island (and where Freddie Mercury was born). It is rich in history and culture, and it offers beautiful white sandy beaches and warm tropical weather. There are parts of the island that are quite tidal, meaning that the ocean goes out far for a period of the day, making it a great time to explore the animal life left behind in the rock pools. If you want to avoid the tides, the north coast is the least affected and has the best beaches. There is also a really stunning resort off the coast of Zanzibar called Mnemba Island, which is home to  Mnemba Island Lodge , a very exclusive resort, and has some of the best diving nearby.

Best things to do:  Stone Town tours and rooftop dinners, swimming with turtles, sunset show cruises, exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, and diving.

How to get there: There are direct flights from Nairobi and Tanzania, as well as some European countries and Dubai. Flights go directly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), and then you will take a taxi, shuttle, or private road transfer to your respective resort, roughly 1-2 hours from the airport.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

Of the 572 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory, only 38 are inhabited and 26 open to visitors—and for decades, the atoll’s remoteness and lack of infrastructure, but abundance of coral reefs, have attracted serious divers, adventurous backpackers, and intrepid A-listers like Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet.

Still, hundreds of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are completely unpopulated. Its remoteness was once its purpose: For decades, the British used the Andaman Islands (namely Port Blair) as an inescapable prison for freedom fighters up until independence. Today, visitors can find white sand beaches (including Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island, regularly named one of Asia’s best), mangroves, and lush tropical rainforests.

Best things to do: Named after the jagged, black rocks strewn along the coastline, Kalapathar Beach offers an isolated destination for trekking amongst exposed root tangles of 100-year-old trees and aged driftwood carved into captivating designs by the aftereffects of a tsunami, creating a unique, moorish landscape dotted with shells. After the trek, the Kalapathar lagoon just before Butler Bay offers a beautiful secluded spot for swimming and great ocean views through a cave in the cliff face.

In the capital city of Port Blair, Cellular Jail is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourism mascot. A former British prison, Cellular Jail National was something like a holy place for the freedom fighters, who exchanged books, ideas, and debates despite walls and wardens. The Light and Sound Show in the evening is a must-see.

How to get there: Fly into the main airport at Port Blair, which is well-connected on a non-stop service stop from Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. (Note: If you were to fly out of Mumbai, the best course is to fly into Kolkata first and take a connecting flight to Port Blair.) From Port Blair Airport, it’s a 20-minute drive to the Ferry Terminal and a 90-minute ferry ride to Havelock Island.

So often I hear people talk about how  Caribbean islands are devoid of history. They most certainly are not—and thankfully, much of its complicated history is starting to be talked about and will hopefully pave the way for more concerted historical landmarks in the future. But while many islands have focused more on blue water and white sand than their historical pasts, Nevis provides the cultural richness some travelers are looking for, with its restaurants and colorful past as a once-bustling Caribbean hub. (If you’re reading this and don't already know Alexander Hamilton was born here, you’re likely in the minority.)

It’s the Goldilocks of the Caribbean: easy to get to (see below), but still enough of a trip to keep the nonstop-flight-only masses away. It has beautiful beaches, while offering a safe environment to eat in off-property restaurants and explore the island outside of the resort. It feels off the beaten path, yet is home to true luxury resorts and charming hotels. (While Nisbet Plantation closed permanently during the pandemic, the  Golden Rock Inn is another boutique gem, and the luxurious  Four Seasons Resort Nevis offers activities for everyone.) 

Best things to do: Take a historical tour by taxi around the island—there are several taxi driver-guides that do this, and they will become your best friends over the course of the morning! (Your hotel concierge can help set this up.) Explore the jungle (and Nevis’s voluminous monkey population) in an ATV tour, or charter a sailboat for the day to explore the wildlife by water and experience some of the Caribbean’s famous winds. 

How to get there: Nonstop flights fly in season from most East Coast hubs to St. Kitts. After that, a short taxi ride will take you to the water taxi, which typically arrives on Nevis in less than 10 minutes.

Tikehau, French Polynesia

Tikehau is a hidden gem within French Polynesia . Its remoteness means you’ll be close to nature and raw, undisturbed beaches—think crystal clear waters with an abundance of fish and coral reefs, which you can enjoy from an overwater bungalow. Pristine, beautiful pink sand beaches make it ideal for enjoying the sun or watching the perfect sunsets. Book a stay at  Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts (highly recommended), where the pastry chef has mastered French cuisine, from perfect croissants to preparing fish you caught earlier that day.

Best things to do:   Snorkeling and diving are the focus here, given the vast number of fish, untouched corals, and vibrant clams, along with the chance to swim amongst the sharks. Another popular activity is kayaking around the atoll into small bays to explore.

How to get there:  From the U.S., fly to Papeete on the island of Tahiti; from there, use the inter-island flights through Air Tahiti. This may require an overnight stay before catching a flight to Tikehau, followed by a short boat ride to your resort of choice .

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

People visit the Galápagos Islands mostly for the incredible wildlife viewing, including endemic species such as the blue-footed boobie, Galápagos penguin, marine iguanas, flamingos, sea lions, and many more. The Galápagos marine reserve is one of the largest and most bio-diverse in the world, making for exceptional diving and snorkeling. This unique archipelago was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and consists of 18 islands and more than 100 small islets, located approximately 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.

Best things to do: There is so much to explore in the Galápagos Islands, especially for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers . The best way to see the Galápagos is via sea, visiting all of the diverse islands in the archipelago. Hiking Isla Bartolome will feel like you landed on Mars. This volcanic moonscape is home to Galápagos hawks, blue-footed boobies, and lava lizards. You can also snorkel among sea lions, flightless cormorants, sea turtles, and—our favorite—the Galápagos penguins. 

Visit Floreana’s Post Office Bay to participate in a tradition dating back to the 1800s where sailors would leave mail to be retrieved and delivered by another sailor passing through. Today you can do the same by leaving your own postcard and retrieving another postcard for delivery back home. Another exciting adventure is visiting the Highlands of Santa Cruz, where you will experience the high-altitude microclimates where the giant tortoise lives before preparing for their long migration to the shorelines.

How to get there: There are no direct flights into the Galápagos from U.S. or Europe. You’ll need to fly from mainland Ecuador—either Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE)—to the islands. Most people fly into San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) or Seymour Airport (GPS), which serves the island of Baltra and connects to Santa Cruz via water taxi.

Vega Island, Norway

Vega Island is located a few miles south of the Arctic Circle, just off the coast of Helgeland in Norway . You should visit because of its amazing natural beauty, wildlife, wide variety of cool activities, and unique cultural heritage. Vega is part of an unbelievably large archipelago with thousands of small islands, and it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.

Best things to do: Sea-kayaking, fishing, hiking, and visiting the unique island community that produces pillows and duvets from the down given by wild eider ducks.

How to get there: First you fly from Oslo to Brønnøysund Airport at Helgeland. From there, you drive to Horn and take a car ferry to Vega.

Big Island, Hawaii

The island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island , offers a staggering amount of diversity in one destination, making it perfect for travelers that want to have a wide range of experiences. Also visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the lava tubes, volcanic formations, and steam vents.

How to get there: Flights from the continental U.S. can go directly into Kona, or take a 45-minute flight over from Honolulu. 

Lord Howe Island, Australia

This tiny World Heritage-listed island (just over 5 miles long and less than 1 mile at its widest part) packs a real punch, offering a spectacular diversity of landscapes and activities: two towering mountains to hike and dozens of beaches to explore (from the tranquil sheltered lagoon to the uncrowded waves of Blinky’s surf beach), lush rainforests home to spectacular birdlife, and turquoise waters teeming with vibrant marine life and colorful coral reefs. Lord Howe Island ’s natural treasures and adventures are complemented by a collection of luxury stays and a laidback Australian coastal lifestyle that invites indulgence and relaxation—but only for an in-the-know privileged few. The island has a cap of just 400 visitors (and a permanent population of less than that) at any one time. Paradise found!

Best things to do: While the temptation may be to simply slip into the private plunge pool on the balcony of your  luxury lodge accommodation or lose yourself in the pages of a good book in the shade of the kentia palms at your private island house, visitors to Lord Howe Island are spoiled for choice with activities that explore the island’s many natural treasures: snorkeling or scuba diving, hiking or biking (the island’s main mode of transport), swimming or surfing, SUP-ing, kayaking, golfing, stargazing, birdwatching, or fishing—just to kick off the list. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to hand-feed the fish at Ned’s Beach, scout for turtles at Settlement Beach, picnic on a secluded beach, or mingle with the locals at a “fish fry.”

How to get there: Located approximately 435 miles northwest of  Sydney , daily direct scheduled flights from Sydney are the easiest way to access the island (less than a 2-hour flight time). Private charter flights can also be arranged.

Thanks to easy air access, St. Lucia has long been known as the lush, adventurous capital of the Caribbean. But Dominica provides the same connection with nature, with a slightly more undiscovered slant . The “Nature Island” isn’t for people who want to walk for miles on white, sandy beaches—as a volcanic island, many of the beaches have a darker hue. The tradeoff of islands with powdery beaches for miles is that often there is a risk of being bored on the beach—not here!

Best things to do: Incorporate a series of hikes into your trip—there are many trails from easy to strenuous with incredible views, often with the gift of a waterfall. Dominica is also a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving. If you’re not certified, you can take your classwork prior to your vacation and complete your certifications on the island. Champagne Reef is a favorite—it gets its name from the bubbling waters that come up from the underwater thermal springs.

How to get there: For years (COVID didn’t help) it was quite difficult to get to Dominica in one day from the U.S., but starting in early April, there will be a direct American Airlines flight from Miami daily, which opens up this island to a host of new adventurers.

Crete, Greece

Crete has the best of everything: pink sand beaches, ancient history, natural beauty, and charming harbor towns. It is the largest and most southern island of Greece, so the weather and water are warmer before and after the summer season. Crete has maintained its own identity. It has a different cuisine, dialect, and traditions. It is one of my favorite places in the world.  

Best things to do: The charming harbor town of Rethymnon is a medieval walled city full of interesting handicraft shops and traditional restaurants. AVLI is a boutique property consisting of several apartments that have been converted into a hotel. There is also a natural food store in the hotel that offers several types of olive oil and honey raki. The restaurant is a courtyard with 10 tables offering the freshest ingredients and cooking classes by the owner of AVLI, Katina.

You can drive to Crete’s other must-visit sites in under two hours. Visit the uninhabited island of Spinalonga, the pink sand beach of Elafonisi, the Cove of Balos, and the Samaria Gorge—one of the deepest and longest canyons in Europe.

How to get there: Take a direct flight to Crete from Athens, or take the year-round ferry from Piraeus or the seasonal, summer ferry from Santorini.

Nothing says summer like a beach vacation. A trip to the coast is the classic family outing, the ultimate romantic getaway or girls' trip, and even great for a solo adventure. Whether you want to relax with your toes in the sand or try surfing, there's a perfect beach destination for you — and one that won't cost you too much.

Camping opportunities and free activities mean most beach trips can be made affordable. Some oceanfront destinations are even easier on your wallet because they're set in quiet or under-the-radar locales with lower hotel rates. Here, we've put together a list of affordable beaches you can visit around the world without breaking your budget.

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida

Sure, Miami and Palm Beach are popular Florida getaways, but this lesser-known beach town is far more affordable. It's virtually hidden on Florida's east coast, tucked between Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, offering the classic white sand and aquamarine water Florida is famous for. Plus, the charming seaside community that backs it will make you feel like you've stepped back in time. The beach pavilion decorated with rainbow-colored umbrellas and surrounded by mid-century modern buildings gives off '50s vibes.

Free and inexpensive things to do include strolling through oceanfront Anglin's Square, which is filled with cafes, bars, restaurants, and gelato shops. Swing by Anglin's Beach Cafe for a fried shrimp basket with an ocean view, and then grab a scoop of mint chocolate chip from Kilwins before heading back to the beach. There’s a range of affordable accommodations in the area, from boutique hotels to beachside resorts. 

Coronado, Panama

If you're looking for a tropical beach vacation, Panama tends to be one of the more affordable places to go. Visit during the offseason for serious deals on flights and hotels. About an hour and a half's drive from Panama City, the beach in Coronado is uncrowded, has gentle water perfect for swimming, and is known for its beautiful salt-and-pepper sand.

The town of Coronado, popular among American nomads and expats, has no shortage of affordable places to eat and stay. If you want to get away from people, head just outside of Coronado to the town of Nueva Gorgona, whose turquoise waters are great for swimming, surfing, and floating the day away.  When you want a break from the sun, grab a cold one from the Sandbar Gastropub or go for a walk under the canopy of the Coronado Dry Forest.

Sayulita, Mexico

Swap Cabo and Cancun for the beach town of Sayulita, a cheaper (and more relaxed) destination. Situated on the west coast of Mexico near Puerto Vallarta, this town is famous for its surfing. But you don't have to be on a board to enjoy it — instead, spend your time on one of the beautiful beaches, like Sayulita Beach, Playa De Los Muertos, and Carricitos, or take a a 20-minute drive to La Lancha.

There are also tons of shops to explore in Sayulita, from surfing outfitters to bohemian-chic clothing stores and local galleries like Evoke the Spirit . Check into the Casablanca Sayulita Hotel , where you'll enjoy the rates as much as the views.   

Islamorada, Florida

This village in the Florida Keys has plenty to offer visitors, and opting for a trip here instead of the more popular islands like Key West will save you some cash while still providing a beachy escape.

Explore the 11-acre Indian Key Historic State Park , where the remains of a shipwreck that dates back to the 1800s are on display. Also check out Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park , which has an exposed coral reef and nature trails that snake through mangrove forests.

Gold Beach, Oregon

This town has secluded beaches, tide pools, and ocean kayaking opportunities, and the nearby Rogue River offers jet-boat tours and fishing. Try visiting between March and May, when you can catch a glimpse of northbound pods of migrating gray whales as they pass through. Lodgings include everything from quaint bed-and-breakfasts like Endicott Gardens to the remote Tu Tu' Tun Lodge on the wooded banks of the Rogue. 

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

This lively beach town has great activities for families and a vibrant downtown to explore. In addition to its championship courses, the city is a mini-golf capital, with more than 50 miniature golf courses in the area. Hunt for seashells and explore the pier at Myrtle Beach State Park , then go shopping at Hudson's Surfside Flea Market or Market Common . You’ll have your pick of places to stay, from high-rise condos with kitchens to hotels with their own water parks.

Corfu, Greece

While Greece can be a very expensive place to visit, this small town is relatively affordable compared to the most popular islands. During your stay, explore the alleyways and winding streets in Corfu's Old Town, which is home to museums like the Archaeological Museum and Casa Parlante , a mansion that's been made into a museum with decorations dating back to the 1800s. Also visit Achilleion , a historic palace that's been converted into a museum with a giant painting of Achilles pulling Hector from his chariot.

Tybee Island, Georgia

Just a half-hour drive from historic downtown Savannah, Tybee Island has a three-mile-long beach with distinct areas. The North Beach is a great place to watch birds and ships; Mid Beach is the spot to hunt for seashells and shark teeth; South Beach is the busiest area with volleyball and dolphin-spotting; and Back River is a more secluded area with a fishing pier and great views of Little Tybee, the nature preserve just south of the barrier island. There are also a lot of free parks, playgrounds, and hiking trails.

Tybee has a range of vacation rentals to choose from, and, of course, one of the perks of a beach destination is the stellar camping opportunities.   

Patong, Thailand

Thailand is an ideal budget-conscious getaway, and this beach on the lively island of Phuket is a great destination for travelers looking for a dose of partying on vacation. Its curving strip of sand is bustling with cafes, restaurants, and bars.

Relax on the white sand and swim in the crystal-blue water by day, then after dark, explore the city's wild nightlife scene. Catch a Thai Boxing event or try one of the many cabarets off Bangla Road.

Walk around one of the two nearby sprawling shopping malls, Central Patong and Jungceylon . You can also try mango rice and coconut ice cream at Banzaan Fresh Market or pick up some souvenirs at Malin Plaza.

Palawan Island, Philippines

Even though a flight to the Philippines can be pricey, hotels, food, and activities are usually affordable once you arrive. On this beautiful island, you could go parasailing, snorkel in Bacuit Bay, go on a jungle walk, or book a cave spelunking tour with Ugong Rock Adventures . Travel a bit north to visit the beautiful beaches of El Nido. Along the way, Honda Bay is a great jumping-off point for island hopping.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

There are miles of golden beaches for sunbathing, beachcombing, and swimming. Explore local craft breweries on the Virginia Beach Beer Trail , or order a charcuterie board on the terrace at Terrapin Restaurant . Cambria, California

This classically Californian beach town is an affordable alternative to the beaches of Los Angeles and San Diego. The biggest attraction may be Moonstone Beach , known for its tide pools, boardwalk, and, yes, having moonstones and jade.  

Stop by the Boni’s Tacos food truck on a weekend for its famous tacos al pastor, or head to Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill for an Alaskan cod sandwich and glass of local wine. Grab a midday pick-me-up from Cambria Coffee Roasting Company and explore the town’s boutiques, art galleries, and the Coastal Discovery Center on San Simeon Bay. You can also take a short drive to tour Hearst Castle .

South Haven, Michigan

This West Michigan town has seven quintessential Lake Michigan beaches with wide, flat shorelines and beach grass. The historic, bright-red South Pierhead Light stands at the west end of the South Pier, at the mouth of the Black River. When you’re not at the beach, explore the Michigan Maritime Museum , which also offers a range of boat rides from sunset sailing tours to cruises in a Disney-famous lifeboat. In August, South Haven hosts its National Blueberry Festival , which includes a parade, live entertainment, and pie-eating contests.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

A two-and-a-half-hour flight from Miami, Puerto Rico makes for a great, affordable Caribbean getaway. With cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, San Juan is the island’s charming capital. There's a wide selection of lodging and delicious restaurants here, as well as beaches, nightclubs, and historic sites.

Spend the day relaxing on a palm-lined, white-sand beach, like El Escambrón, where swimming and snorkeling are a must. Then walk around Old San Juan’s historic landmarks like the oceanfront fortresses at the San Juan National Historic Site .  

Penang, Malaysia

This area on Malaysia’s northwest coast is home to gorgeous beaches, jungles, farmland, and fishing villages. On Penang Island, the capital city of George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with colonial architecture, temples, and museums (many of which are free to visit). Beaches like Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah have blue-green water and golden shorelines. They’re popular for swimming, water sports, and sunset watching.  

When you're ready for a break from the beach, head into the rainforest for a ride on the world’s longest waterslide at Escape Penang . The 3,645-foot slide sends visitors down a 230-foot slope through the lush canopies. Visit the Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple or the Penang State Museum and Art Gallery in George Town for history and culture. Or, embrace the gorgeous local flora at the Penang Botanic Gardens and the Tropical Spice Garden .

Stay at the beachfront Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang for access to Batu Ferringhi and chic, affordable rooms.  

St. Paul's Bay, Malta

This quiet fishing village on Malta’s northern coast is a great place to get away from the crowds for a good price. The beaches in Malta are exactly what you’d expect from the Mediterranean. White sand, bright blue water, and rocky outcroppings greet you on the shore. You can take a boat ride from St. Paul’s Bay over to Comino’s famous Blue Lagoon. If you head here toward the end of July, you'll experience a traditional Maltese  festa  (a village feast) in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows, which includes processions and fireworks. St. Paul’s Bay is also where you’ll find the Malta National Aquarium .

Accommodations will be both comfortable and affordable, from the DoubleTree by Hilton Malta to the bay-front Gillieru Harbour Hotel .   

Cape May, New Jersey

Another quintessential summer haunt, the Jersey Shore is more than what you’ve seen on TV. The seaside resort city of Cape May has Victorian houses and historic landmarks. The beach’s strip of soft sand is bookended by the deep blue of the Atlantic and a scenic promenade for strolling. While you’re in town, stop by the Cape May Lighthouse and shop the boutiques at Washington Street Mall . 

The historic Congress Hall is a glamorous beachfront icon with an umbrella-lined pool, wide lawn, and charming rooms. Grab a table at the hotel’s Blue Pig Tavern for crab cakes and deviled eggs. 

Essaouira, Morocco

Escape the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh for the resort atmosphere of Essaouira a few hours away on the coast. This long, gold-sand beach is perfect for land and water sports alike. It's a surfing hot spot and popular for riding horses and camels.

Not far from the beach is the UNESCO-recognized Essaouira Medina, a calmer iteration of Marrakesh's market. Meander through the alleys packed with stalls selling spices, slippers, and teas. The Gnaoua World Music Festival is a major draw that takes place annually at the end of June and celebrates the culture of the Gnaoua people. Walk by the fishing boats in the harbor before heading to dinner, where you’ll be served some of the freshest fish and seafood you’ll probably ever have.  

The area is known for its traditional houses that have been converted into small hotels, like the popular and affordable Riad Emotion and Riad Baoussala .

Old Orchard Beach, Maine

This Maine destination is a family-friendly respite. The beach itself has golden sand, aquamarine water, a pier, and is backed by a classic amusement park from 1902. Hit the Ferris wheel at Palace Playland to get sweeping views of Saco Bay, or just swim, sunbathe, and watch the sunset along the shore. After dark, the pier comes alive with music, dancing, and drinking, plus weekly fireworks in the summer.

No trip to Maine is complete without a lobster roll or two. Grab a seat on the deck at The Shack or snag a box of hot, crinkle-cut perfection from longtime local favorite, Pier French Fries .  

You’ll find quaint, no-frills accommodations in town, like Alouette Beach Resort . If you want to stretch your budget a bit for a more boutique experience, you might try The Lincoln Hotel in nearby Biddeford . 

Willemstad, Curaçao

Curaçao makes for a great Caribbean getaway as it’s outside the hurricane zone, so summer is usually bright and beautiful. The capital city of Willemstad is known for its candy-colored, colonial buildings. At the palm-dotted, white-sand beach, dip into the calm, clear water for world-class swimming and snorkeling.  

Willemstad has a number of interesting attractions and architectural marvels to explore. Spend time walking around the pastel buildings in the old town center, marveling at the ruins of the faded mansions of the Pietermaai neighborhood, and take a day trip to Klein (aka “little”) Curaçao, a deserted island with an old lighthouse, shipwrecks, and ancient stone buildings to explore.

Stop by a casual restaurant for affordable Dutch and Afro-Caribbean dishes. Check into the Avila Beach Hotel for access to two private beaches. 

Ocean City, Maryland

With cheap eats and carnival attractions, this classic summer vacation town is a place both you and your wallet will love. Ocean City Beach’s powdery sand gives way to a glittering surf full of swimmers. The picturesque boardwalk is lined with funnel cake and Maryland crab stands, plus it's home to the Jolly Roger Amusement Park . There are plenty of hotels, motels, and inns to choose from that will fit into your budget.

Westport, Washington

Visit this fishing village for whale watching, fresh seafood, and peaceful beaches. You can cast a line or surf in Half Moon Bay in Westport Light State Park , which is also home to the Grays Harbor Lighthouse. Spend some time getting to know local history and marine life at the Westport Maritime Museum and Westport Aquarium . 

Naturally, there are plenty of fishing charters that will take you out in search of salmon, lingcod, rockfish, and albacore. Westport is also known as a surfing mecca, so pack your board or pick one up when you get to town.

Accommodations like The Glenacres Inn and Loge Westport are economical and convenient.  

Orange Beach, Alabama

The gorgeous Gulf of Mexico waters at Orange Beach provide endless opportunities for water sports enthusiasts who enjoy boating, jet skiing, kayaking, and sailing. When you’re not relaxing on the sugar sand or hiking the  Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail , look for dolphins or paddle the Back Bay Blueway. Hit The Wharf for shopping, Ferris wheel rides, and a show at the amphitheater.  

Stay at Perdido Beach Resort for beachfront rooms and access to multiple eateries when you need a quick bite before getting back to the shore.

Well look no further, we have compiled all the best family-friendly countries to visit that are safe, fun, easy, and kid-friendly. Places that are great for children of any age including toddlers or babies too!

Which country is best for a family vacation?

All these are the best travel places to take kids – we should know since we’ve taken our kids to ALL of these countries for our family vacations! Most of these destinations were on our 1 year trip around the world , but these could easily be vacations or extended travel places to take the kids. There are all great places to visit with kids!

1. Cambodia

One of the best international travel destinations for families is Cambodia. Siem Reap is a fantastic place to explore with kids and the people of Cambodia love kids and help families feel comfortable and safe. The easiest way to travel to Cambodia is through the airport with your family. By far one of the best countries to visit with family!

2. South Africa

South Africa is one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit with family. The country has so much to offer from kid-friendly African safaris or city escapes in Cape Town . We spent over 3 weeks in this country and it is one of our favourite countries in the world.

South Africa is a safe and easy destination to take your family. We reveal all the questions you may have about taking your kids on an African Safari which resolves any doubt that you should take your kids to Africa!

Without a doubt, Vietnam is one of the most family-friendly countries to visit. Vietnam was the first Southeast Asian country that we took the kids to and was genuinely impressed with how much the people and the travel industry cater to kids.

We spent 4 weeks travelling all over Vietnam with some of the best highlights in Hoi An, Halong Bay, Hanoi and Phu Quoc. All of the places in Vietnam are kid-friendly. We felt safe and found it very easy to travel around this country. Vietnam is one of the best countries to travel with kids and you’ll be sure to enjoy your family vacation here.

Vietnam would be a great place to take toddlers and babies too!

Croatia is a dream destination for families. All kinds of fun activities for the kids to do, with plenty of beach days, swimming, hiking, and exploring waterfalls. Kids love taking the ferries out to the other islands and snorkelling in the clear blue water. Croatia is one of the best places to travel with kids!

I would suggest it is one of the best European countries to visit with kids, they love the food, sunshine and really easy for the kids to have a good time. As well, most people speak English which can make it easy for North Americans to visit and feel comfortable. For all these great reasons, Croatia is one of the best countries to travel to with family.

When we booked Malta to take our kids to we had no idea what to expect nor did we know anyone that had taken their kids there. But, we absolutely loved Malta with our kids and highly recommend it for families.

Located south of Italy it offers great weather, clear blue water and a unique amount of history with the location between Europe and Africa. So you can have beach days with your family and also get a big dose of history and culture. Be sure to go visit the island of Gozo too. It is one of the best family holiday destinations in the world and a place that is undiscovered by many! We love Malta and truly think it is one of best countries to travel to with kids.

6. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a great country to take kids to. We loved taking our kids to Prague and think it is one of the best cities to visit with kids. There are tons of playgrounds and parks to take the kids to in the heart of the city. They have kid-centric activities and fun things for the kids to do in the city.

The Czech Republic can also be a great country that you can pair with other close countries to visit with the family. We did a 10-day trip through the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria to see all these amazing family-friendly countries. The Czech Republic is one the best countries for kids and offers so much for all kids to enjoy.

7. United Kingdom

If you are new to travelling in Europe, the United Kingdom is an easy country to try first for your first international family vacation. The easiest part is that everything is in English, including menus, signs, taxi drivers and any other communication you need.

It’s also a great place to introduce kids to that are new to travelling. London has some very cool things to do including the Making of Harry Potter Studio which is always a hit with kids.

8. United Arab of Emirates

The United Arab of Emirates may not have been on your radar and it wasn’t necessarily for us either. But, when planning our travel we found out that Dubai is a central hub for many flights so why not make a stopover in this country to check it out.

Dubai has tons of things to do with kids, more than I ever expected and they love families travelling in the country. We also felt extremely safe and impressed by how kid-friendly everything was. Plus, one of the best things to do in the UAE is to go on a desert safari which we highly recommend. Abu Dhabi is a very fun city for kids too and should be on your list.

If your family is looking for a beach destination that is carefree and easy then Jamaica is a great place to visit with your kids. There are so many great all-inclusive that offer great family options for lazy days by the pool and building sandcastles on the beach. Many of the resorts in Jamaica are easy holidays with kids that offer kids clubs and babysitting services for babies and toddlers.

The ocean is amazing in Jamacia and the sand is remarkable. A perfect Caribbean family getaway.

10. Australia

Australia is one of the best travel places for kids. What kid doesn’t want to see kangaroos, koala bears and go snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef? Australia is a large country so chances are unless you are going to move there for a while you will not even see a good portion of it. So you’ll have to choose which area you are going to go see with your family.

We highly recommend the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island , Sydney and the Great Ocean Road for a 1-month vacation in Australia . So much to see and do in Australia that is fantastic for families to visit and one of the most kid friendly countries in the world.

11. Hungary

Hungary is a great country to take the kids to. Budapest is a fun and easy city to take the kids to with fun places to see such as Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda hill castle funicular and a river cruise on the Danube River. Try taking train rides through the country or renting a car to get to see the countryside and stop in new places along the way.

12. Thailand

Thailand is a dream destination for families to go to. It is extremely easy and safe travel with your kids in Thailand. They have more tourism and international visitors than many other southeast Asian countries so they are really good at making travellers feel comfortable.

So many amazing temples to visit in Bangkok and beach life on Phuket Island are some of our recommendations.

13. New Zealand

The best way to visit New Zealand with your family is with a campervan or on a road trip to be able to visit both the North and South Islands. New Zealand offers so many diverse places to see on the islands and great for any families that love the outdoors.

After travelling in New Zealand for 1 month there are still places that we did not discover so our advice is to try to see it all but enjoy the places you do get to see with the family. Some of the kid’s highlights of New Zealand are Hobbiton, Lake Wanaka and the Waitomo caves.

Canada has so much to offer and depending on where you go in the country you’ll have all different experiences. From mountains in British Columbia to the prairies , or french life in Quebec, or the Maritimes. There is a diverse amount of places to visit that are unique in their own way.

Canada can also be a great family trip if you are wanting to see the snow and all the winter wonderlands including Banff , Big White or Whistler.

15. Austria

A country that has so much history and culture for the kids to truly appreciate what they learn in all the textbooks in their classrooms. Have some new experience with the family by taking them to the Opera or a grand palace in Vienna .

16. Singapore

Singapore can be a great entry into southeast Asia for families. It is a mix of western and eastern worlds with a mix of so many other cultures it lets you get a dose of culture in this small country. Kids will love places like Universal Studios and waterparks, and still enjoy the amazing world of street food that is infused in this country. Singapore is definitely one of the countries for a family vacation that you should check off your list!

17. Malaysia

Malaysia is a great place to visit with the kids. Langkawi island is a great place that offers a beach escape for families which is less touristic and off the beaten path for family travellers but all the conveniences for resort life.

On our 1-year world trip, Langkawi was where we decided to go for our “vacation” from travelling. It is one of the easiest countries to visit with children since the culture embraces kids, babies, toddlers and any small kids.

France is a great country to take your kids to. I visited France many times when I was a kid and had no concerns or worries about taking our kids there. But, I would highly recommend either driving yourself through the countryside or checking out other places than the major hub of Paris. We loved our time in Biarritz where we enjoyed the French life and visited where the French go on vacation. France is the best country to travel with kids if you are looking for a bit of cultural change but still some westernized influences, it’s very easy to travel to with kids.

19. Indonesia

Indonesia is a great place for families to vacation. This country can be a cost-effective Southeast Asian country to visit and spend a significant amount of time in. Kids love to discover places in Bali like the rice terraces and Ubud Monkey Forrest. Indonesia is one of the most kid-friendly countries to visit and love having kids visit their country.

Mexico is a great country to take kids for an easy trip when children are small. There are beach vacation resorts for families that are fun for everyone with pools, beaches, great food and kids clubs. So if you are looking for a beach vacation that is easy many places in Mexico can offer some great places.

We recommend places like Mayan Riviera, Nuevo Vallarta or Puerto Vallarta. It is where to travel with kids for a great first trip with kids.

Spain is a fantastic place to travel to with kids. We will definitely be spending more time in Spain over the next few years to discover more. Great food, great culture and warm weather are the perfect matches for families who love to travel. This is the reason why Spain is one of the best countries for a family vacation and to enjoy some great family time.

22. Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a great country that is still off the beaten path for many families who travel. But, with that come a more cost-effective way to travel with cheaper rates on hotels, food and activities. Sofia Bulgaria is also a flight hub to easily have a few day layovers for a quick family trip. Bulgaria is a great option and one of the best countries to travel with family for a more budget-friendly option.

What kid doesn’t like pasta and pizza? The food in Italy will make it a hit for sure with the kids. But, sprinkled in between great food are some cool places to check out for kids. Rome is a great place to take the kids for a world of history for them to learn from. Venice, Alfami coast and Cinque Terra are some great places too for kids to love. It’s a top destination for families for a reason and one of the best countries to visit with kids.

Cuba is a great Caribbean destination that is kid-friendly which some of the softest and whitest sand we’ve seen in the world. Beach life suits baby and toddler travel with easy nap times and a slow pace of life while on vacation here. Cuba is amazingly one of the best countries to visit with family in tow.

Havana, Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria are great spot to check out and a super family friendly countries to visit.

25. South Polynesian (Vanuatu & New Caledonia)

The South Polynesian islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia are some of the most beautiful places on earth. An easy way to visit these destinations with kids is with a cruise. We recommend a South Polynesian cruise to have the balance for kids to go check out many different islands but have the fun of a cruise ship.

If you are looking for the best country for family vacation, the South Polynesian doesn’t get much more dreamier and funner for kids.

26. Dominican Republic

Bonus! A country that we needed to share is the Dominican Republic. This country is one of the best places to travel with toddlers. White sands, clear blue water and family-friendly resorts make this a great family destination for families with little ones. It is a great kid-friendly country to visit with your family.

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.
