WOW! What an experience. Waking up to see the sunrise over Mt Fuji, then taking an outdoor onsen bath as the sun crept higher. The accommodation was a unique experience from the moment we arrived to the time we departed. The traditional rooms with Tatami mats and bedding, the yukata, the traditional meals and number of courses – they had to be seen to be believed.
Katie & Alexander Walshe
We don’t have anything to suggest to change as we thoroughly enjoyed the experience as it was. It was good advice to have the extra day in Tokyo before and after the tour to allow time to settle in before the tour and travelling home at the end. With the additional [custom] walking trip, it would probably have been better to have an extra day in Osaka before starting the walking tour to allow time to prepare and rest.
Sue & Merv Cowie
What a wonderful Autumn Leaves tour we had. Great places, guides, hot tubs and food. Journey to the East thought of everything. It took the pressure off travelling to Japan.
Sue & Peter Wood
Our 2019 Autumn Leaves Comfort Tour of Japan was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the tour. All the guides were fantastic and the attention to detail by Journey to the East was exemplary. The food, the stories, the autumn colours, the transport and the hotels were all wonderful. The planning and execution were first class and nothing was left to chance. We could not recommend this tour more highly.
Stuart & Elaine Sime
A very well-organised tour of some of the major cities, with emphasis on autumn colour in gardens, temples, and shrines, led by extremely good local guides. We were lucky to be there at the peak of autumn colour. The tour gave a good introduction to Japanese culture, including religion, food, and history. The hotels were excellent and we ate at top restaurants which highlighted different aspects of Japanese food. The tour organisers were extremely helpful and met every request, especially for our tour extensions. Individual, detailed itineraries were a bonus.
Mary Campbell
As a single traveller this tour was superb in every way – a wonderful group of fellow travellers, fantastic guides + unforgettable autumn colours! Thank you Journey to the East

Billy, our guide was wonderful and very informative. Our driver was super and the van was just the right size. The 2 other guests were the best.
The tours was very interesting as it allows me to have a very good idea about Japan. I was able to visit many places such as temple, shrines, castle, Japanese gardens as well as historical places. Additionally, the tour allowed me to have nice experience from Japan such as the good food, Tea ceremony, the rapid train and typical Japanese Hotel. Furthermore, I have discovered through the tour the lovely nature of Japan and learned a lot of information about its history and its tradition.
Absolute;ly loved the tour! Billy was a fantastic guide and very informative about the culture and entertaining.
This was a fantastic way to see Japan. We saw so many sites and we had the opportunity to experience so many things. Learning how to make sushi was not only fun, but it was also a tasty lunch. Billy was a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. Kamata San is definitely a highly skilled bus driver. Learning about the varying cuisines in the different regions of Japan was a delicious lesson to learn.
Great variety of places, unique experiences and entertaining, informative Guide. AJT staff very helpful - good to have personal service.

Japan Small Group Tours
Japan small group tours faq.
- How are the hot spring hotels we will stay in Japan? For the group tours from Tokyo to Osaka, you will enjoy a night at a hot spring hotel. Unless upon special request, we will not arrange the traditional hot spring hotel with Tatami bed. Instead, we will arrange modern hot spring hotel. If you want to stay in a traditional Japanese Onsen, please inform your representative in advance and we will try to accommodate your need. -->
- When will you announce the tour dates for 2024? We have announced the fixed tour dates for 2024. Please check on the page of specific route and you can see the fixed dates for 2024, including the dates in the cherry blossom season. -->
- What type of meals will be provided for small group tours? The breakfasts offered by hotels are in buffet styles. Other meals are traditional Japanese cuisine. If you have requested vegetarian meal, Japanese style vegetarian meals will be served. Vegetarian meal in Japan is simple and has to be arranged and ordered in advance. We currently don't serve Indian vegetarian meal. -->
- Do we need to pay extra for the attractions in Japan? Any attractions listed on the itinerary are included in the tour price without additional charge. You do not have to pay extra for admission tickets unless specified, for example the admission to Tokyo Tower. Some small group tours offer optional tours and additional fees apply. -->
- Does every hotel provide breakfast and what foods are provided? All the breakfasts are included. The breakfasts are served with both Japanese and Western foods in buffet style. If you need to catch your flight and do not have time for breakfast on the last day, our tour guide can help to order a breakfast box to go. -->
- Can we stay behind in Japan after the group tour ends? We can help to arrange the hotel for an extended stay. However, because we have a fix rate with the hotel, sometimes you may find cheaper deals online. -->
- How many people will be in each tour group? Usually there are 15 to 20 people on a tour group, and about 10 people during low season. However, during peak season like Cherry Blossom season, a tour can reach above 15 people. -->
- Why your prices of group tours are cheaper than other Japan tour operators? The facts are: we are offering group tours directly to clients, not through the third party. We have set up good and long-term cooperation with the local suppliers in Japan, so we could always get the best price. With these advantages, we are able to provide the travelers top quality Japan group tours with the most affordable prices. -->
- Do I have to pay a single room supplement if I join in the tour group by myself? If you are traveling alone, single supplement fee will apply because you will have your own room. The single supplement fee is the additional charge to compensate for half of the room price. Because tourists are with different cultural backgrounds and habits, we do not pair up single travelers. -->
- May I book a hotel by myself if I join in the group tour? You need to book the same hotels as those used by the tour group. Since our finalized hotel list will be sent to you about 10 to 12 days before departure date, it will be late and very hard to book the hotels on your own. -->
- What time does your tour group start and end every day? The full day sightseeing visit usually starts at around 08:30 and ends at about 19:00, timing may change slightly according to the itinerary and traffic condition. -->
- Do I need to give tips to the drivers and local guide? Because of the particular culture in Japan, tour guides and drivers generally do not prefer taking tips directly from travelers. Thus, we collect tips in advance and later distribute to them along with their basic salary. However, if you like the service they offered, and you are welcome to give extra tips, preferably in an envelope. -->
- Are we guaranteed to get the hotels listed on the itinerary? The listed hotels are contracted with our company. According to different tour itineraries and dates, we book the hotels in advance. However, in case we cannot book the same hotels, we reserve the right to arrange similar hotels for our group tours. The finalized hotel list with contact information will be provided to you on the final confirmation. -->
- How long in advance should I place my order of small group tours? Availability of each small group tour changes daily, and the group seats are easily sold out during the high season. We suggest you place order as soon as you have final travel date. Please don’t hesitate to contact our Hakone tour specialists for any questions. -->
- What if I arrive early or late for a joining group tour? If you arrive a few days earlier than the scheduled group package, our company may book the extra night accommodation and provide a private tour for you. Likewise, you can also extend your vacation t destination after the end of group tour. -->
- Cheryl Lum Time:31-08-2024 Good experience with Booking private mini bus for my family of 14 pax. Driver was experienced and overall we are very satisfied. A great customer experience! Even though we booked abit last minute but Lydia and her team managed to arrange for a comfortable and smooth journey to our resort! Driver was very prompt and accommodating even when we changed the timetable of our visit a little bit. Communication was not an issue thanks to google translate. Excellent service and communication from start to finish. The scheduling team was easy to work with and they were able to set up transportation for my family for a day trip outside of the normal for transportation. The driver was friendly and on time and made the trip a breeze. Thank you for all your help!
- Alexa Time:09-08-2024 This entire company is amazing. The level of communication was impeccable and the drivers were beyond nice. We saw absolutely everything on our list in Japan because of them! If you are thinking about using them 100% do it! My family and I took an 8/9 hours transportation/tour of Hakone with Japan Holiday, and they were amazing! Our driver was very gentle, helpful and thoughtful :) we were traveling with an infant and elderly parents, and he would inform us if the weather seemed colder and that he would wait nearby if we wanted to run back into the car quickly, or he would head over to the restaurants/tea house to check if they were open before letting us out. Really appreciated it! Also, James was very responsive and helpful when coordinating our travels prior to the trip. Thanks so much and would definitely book again when we need a tour/transport!
- Nicholas Time:07-07-2024 Excellent service and communication from start to finish. The scheduling team was easy to work with and they were able to set up transportation for my family for a day trip outside of the normal for transportation. The driver was friendly and on time and made the trip a breeze. We booked a 1-day round trip for 5 people between Tokyo and Mount Fuji and we are extremely satisfied with the service. The booking process is easy through emails. We paid through Paypal in advance and that was the only payment needed. No hidden fees or extra charge. We were notified about the details of the driver the day before the trip. The driver, Mr. Itami-san, showed up on time at our hotel. The car was clean and comfortable. Mr. Itami-san speaks fluent Mandarin and Japanese; he is knowledgeable about the area. We went to Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai and had to travel back to Tokyo at 3:30pm-ish due to heavy traffic. I suggest to stay a night around Mount Fuji area if you have time and would like to better enjoy the majestic views. I highly recommend Japan Holiday to anyone who wants to travel in Japan through private transportation.
- Lalisa Time:29-05-2024 Was recommended this company by a family member for their previous trip in Hokkaido. Super easy to communicate with via email, and arrangements were good. The driver cum tour guide was Robin who recommended us a lot of food and places to go while we were in Hokkaido. Great experience. Day trip to Biei. Driver was very safe and polite. She was professional and able to guide/explain about sapporo. It was snowy and Safety is the upmost important. The staff members were quite helpful especially Melinda who kept communicating with me. They work really quickly to finalize our vacation. Additionally, the driver communicates effectively. We had to stop in several places, but he made it all happen. Highly recommend booking from them.
- Rosalind Wong Time:26-04-2024 I booked Japan Holiday for a car and driver for 7 days to travel out of Tokyo to the north of Honshu. Our group of 8 fitted into the 9- seater comfortably with luggage in April 2024. I planned the itinerary with their rep Lydia, who was always prompt and helpful with her replies and suggestions. She was quick to respond to queries which made the overall planning and booking process easier. The guide and driver Snake-San was wonderful, on time and accommodating. Everything was done professionally and we had a wonderful time. The price of the private tour was very reasonable as well. We were very happy with the service. I would recommend this company.

Culture and customs.
Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.
This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.
History and government
Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history all influencing the country we all know and love today.
Ancient history
While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.
Pre-modern history
Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.
20th century
It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.
These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.
The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.
After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.
Top places to visit in Japan
One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan.
If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore' which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order.
The home of temples, palaces and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.
4. Kanazawa
A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras.
5. Hiroshima
Most travellers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.
6. Yudanaka
This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).
Geography and environment
Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.
Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.
Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.
Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colourful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.
If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.
What to buy
- Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores
Festivals and events
If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.
Sapporo Winter Festival
Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.
Hadaka Matsuri
Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.
Fuji Rock Festival
Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

How safe is Japan?
Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travellers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).
Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
LGBTQIA+ travellers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.
Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalised yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
Is Japan accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
The needs of travellers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted. Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make travelling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.
It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.
Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.
Travellers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.
If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What should I wear in Japan?
Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.
Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.
Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.
The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.
Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.
What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?
