excursion v10 7.3 swap

Wow ! boy that looks like a pretty large undertaking !!!! Im glad mine came with the 7.3 !

Tell me about it. Have about 80 hours into it. 2 of us.

Thats not as bad as I would have figured! Did your v10 give up the ghost or did you purchase it to do the swap? One thing is for sure, you will know every inch of this thing at least under the hood!!

Give up the ghost? Not sure what that means. But, it was a long drawn out process. Fuel lines, fuel tanks, wire harness's, brake booster, odometer. Computer. ICM, pretty much everything.

Southern saying for did it die . Lol I forget you northern boys ain't used to southern sayings ! .

Lmao, dont sell me too short, ive lived in KY TN, graduated High school in 99 back in NC. The v10 was alive and strong, sold the motor yesterday for 600$

Lmao! Im not selling ya short bro ! We just have some crazy sayings down here! I went to a wedding in Red Wing Minnesota and people gathered around just to hear me talk ! We know we different ! LOl

I know what you mean, when i moved back to Michigan, i had to re-learn yankee talk.. lmao

You seriously getting 24mpg? did you hand calculate it also? if so, what is your secret? I actually talked to a guy last night that did that with two 02 trucks. he bought a rust free 5.4 truck and swapped engines, wiring harnesses and interiors between the trucks. pretty impressive Good Job:bowfast:

Where in michigan you at? I assume you have completed the swap? I wish I knew about your v10 im looking to buy one to swap in place of the wimpy 5.4 in my wifes EX.

I would love to buy a 5.4 Ex and put my completely rotted out 2000 drivetrain(6peed and all)in But it may go in my bronco instead

excursion v10 7.3 swap

Damn good idea ! Gas trucks and suv's are a lot cheaper around here than the diesels .

Awesome swap!! I'm sure you are loving those mpg's. How is the power difference? Any engine mods planned?

As far as power goes, the V10 was a solid engine . So going to the PSD was an upgrade. but its not like going from a 4 cyl to a v8 or anything. No engine mods planned until she blows up. Right now i have a front main seal leak, gonna tackle that soon.

What was all needed to do the swap? Looks like quite the job

To do the job correctly, you need everything. Even the harness behind the dash is different. I bought a wrecked excursion, complete. Swapped everything. Had to install the brake booster, swapped fuel lines, tanks, pump. Everything.

excursion v10 7.3 swap

That sounds average, but I cant see mid 20's in that big thing. Also, your gas gauge wont move since you put a diesel in it now. LOL sorry couldnt help it.

Still running strong !!!

Definitely. Probably around 17-18

Still a great decision , truck is still running !

7.3 Godzilla and 10 speed trans in Excursion

excursion v10 7.3 swap

  • Add to quote

Trying to find someone that can swap out my V10 for a 7.3 godzilla and trans or if its even possible. New owner of 2002 Ex Limited 4WD, 167000 miles great truck and in great condition.

Ive also been thinking about this for my excursion.

Anything can be done with enough time and money. I don’t know of anyone who has done it but I’m sure someone out there will sooner or later. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

R.S.LOGAN said: " Absolutely will fit as it is much smaller dimensionally than the V-10 or oil burner 7.3. Look at videos on youtube for exact dimensions. Only slightly larger than a 351W. Very slightly. 3 Videos on there detailing every aspect of this engine. The 10 speed is only slightly larger diameter than the 6r80 6 speed. Do this swap! Ford will have a control pack within 90 days and that was calling them a week ago. 5 wires to connect and it's running. The control pack from what the Ford rep says will also control the tranny so wiring is a no brainer. An Excursion is the perfect candidate next to a 78-79 Bronco! There is a guy on the 73-79 forum that bought an entire wrecked 2020 4X4 for $6000 and he is already underway. Still no word on power steering though. No published provision to bolt a pump to the block and no word on a power rack or gearbox. The 2020 is electro/hydraulic. Fat Fender garage is already teasing this swap on their website." AND The Behemoth Returns: Ford Will Bring Back The Excursion – The Large By Huge SUV Isn’t Dead Yet May 11, 2020 Brian Lohnes BangShift News , BangShift XL , XL Big Truck Feature , XL Truck Feature 5 (By Tom Lohnes) – The Ford Excursion was and is a valuable car. Based on F-250 underpinnings, the Excursion could be had with a yeoman 5.4-liter Triton V8 or a tough as nails 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel. With the crossover and SUV trend in full swing, it would be a great idea for Ford to revive the Excursion. And if all the reports are correct, they are. Ford just filed a patent last night bearing the Excursion name. With the new release of refreshed Ford Super Duty trucks, a new Excursion is a very probable thing to come out of Ford in the next few years. Most likely these will be packing Ford’s new 7.3-liter “Godzilla” gas engine and their revised 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, along with a 10-speed automatic and 2WD or 4WD. The Excursion should slot above the already massive Expedition and Expedition MAX, and should be at least 250 inches, or over 20 feet long. If we go on history, the Big Ford should weigh in the 7,000 pound range, peaking near an 8,000 pound figure fully loaded. Expect the new Excursion to have the same front end, interior, and towing capabilities (minus the ability to haul a gooseneck trailer) as the F-250, and the diesel could offer above 1,000 lb.-ft of torque. Now, how much would all of this cost? Well, I’m gonna go ahead and guess that the base model will start at around $60,000, with the top-of-the-line Limited trim topping $100,000. What can I say, it’s a big price for a big vehicle. Click to expand...

Absolutely, money will get the swap done. Other than the cool factor is a new 7.3 motor at $7,000 plus trans worth about 50-100 HP? Torque spec seems to be close to the 6.8.

Remember that the Godzilla is tuned conservatively. With a tune it’ll be even further ahead. And with some mods people are making crazy power with them in na form. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I will be buying an excursion and doing a godzilla swap. It's pretty much impossible to find one on youtube right now.

I was in this same situation six months ago. Still have most of the parts and the skeleton in the back yard from the donor. I was advised if going to the trouble to do a gas to diesel do the 12v. My v-10 Ex only has 115k and runs great and dependable. I have seen guys around here do 300k on these things. So I am sittin tight and waitin out the v-10. It dont have to work thats what my truck is for, its the wifes grocery gitter and gettin the kids to and from in the snow. Banks exhaust , Mike @ FiveStar and she does good. Good luck and I will be watching this one , like I said I still got everything needed to do it except my donor is a late 99.

Should have kept the ZF. 6 speed 7.3 excursion would be NASTY.

good luck with the wiring nightmare, from what i figured out you are going to need a complete dash harness from an excursion 7.3 to make all the other features work as well

I have the pickup truck tore down now. All told I made over 3 grand parting out a rusty, no option truck and I still have the frame, the motor, and everything to make it run. Not bad considering tghat when I was trying to sell it whole I was getting offers for 4000. And I still have a V10 and its trans to sell. So far this is looking good. Total disassembly time is around 12 hours, maybe 16. I also checked with the ohio emissions teting people and they told me its perfectly legal to swap the diesel in there as its an offered powerplant. Since I'm running a 2000 model year PMT1 pcm they will be happy to think its a 2000 m/y motor (cant swap in an older motor legally). I was originally thinking to swap out the entire harness and that would have made the swap a breeze, but the truck harness has almost no power options. I'll post up some details but I think I'm going to integrate the 2 harnesses so I can keep all the power stuff working without issues. Next up is a 4r100 rebuild. Could take a while but I'll post good pics, promise.

I'm doing some preliminary work on the wiring and it looks like I may make a stand-alone harness for the 7.3L. My options are: 1. replace the whole vehicle harness with an exact match 7.3l excursion harness (difficult and time consuming) 2. re-pin my engine harness at the 3 main firewall connections (time consuming) 3. make the harness a stand alone engine harness and leave all the non engine related wiring alone and intact on the Ex. If I go route #3 I need to make a nice way to run wires into the cab for the go pedal and such, but I think I could get this done in an afternoon. This is also essentially what the cummins swap people are doing. Any thoughts?

Been busy with work/school/family/rebuilding the bathroom, but I finished up the trans. I'd bet it will shift fine, but I wouldn't bet a whole lot lol. I pulled the v10 (let me know if you need one) and started on the engine and wiring. I have lots of pics but the memory card I have crashed so none now. On the motor side I replaced the injector cups and glow plugs, I bought 40 bucks worth of Ford exhaust hardware to redo the up pipes, I replaced the O rings on the dipstick tube, and I did the 50 cent mod. Much more to be done there. On the truck I started the wiring. I'm aiming for fully functional integration of the 7.3L harness and the V10 harness. I spent one whole day just getting the cruise hooked up to the 7.3 PCM. It will be a process, that's for sure. The a/c systems are different wiring wise for the v10 and 7.3 so I have to figure out why and which way will work best. I'm leaning towards wiring the clutch compressor old school... run the power through the a/c pressure switches, then to the clutch. I'll lose WOT cut-out but I don't think there will be any other problems. Pics soon

I had 2 straight days off weds and thurs so I got a lot done. I pulled the engine compartment harness out of the excursion and put it on the bench next to the f250 harness. Set up a fan, a cooler, and some music and rocked out integrating the 2 harnesses into one. It took about 6 hours on weds and it was done and installed. We'll see if I got all those pins in the right place later, haha. I kept it as original as possible and used all the correct fuse and relay locations. I even got the a/c wired up as its supposed to be. It's about what you would have to do to get a 24v cummins installed cleanly except everything lines up, electrically speaking. Thursday I got the hydro brakes installed, all the gas pedal stuff ran, the old transmission and t-case pulled out, the fuel lines installed and the tank mods done. I had to do a little customizing in the tank to get the fuel level arm to drop in the right place but nothing major. The frame mounted fuel pump bolted right up to where the gas filter was, and the lines behind that are the same diameter so I compression fitted them together. I cut off the ebpv acuator on the pedestal to be welded later. I got the ebp sensor tube replaced which was completely crudded up. The exhaust manifold had to have the crud drilled out too, and I assume the sensor will need to be replaced. I pulled the oil cooler off and disassembled that. That's where I called it a night at 10p and went and jumped in the pool.

How difficult to swap from v10 to 7.3? (2004 f250 4x4)

  • Add to quote

I have a chance to pick up a sweet 2004 raised f250 4x4, 150k miles, straight and clean for 3k with blown v10. How difficult would it be to swap to 7.3? If I am going to put 4k in an engine, it wouldn’t be the v10, from what I read about it. Has anyone done a comparable swap? Would the tranny bolt up? (auto) I just don’t know how involved it would be with all of the wiring, fuel, (maybe need bigger tank?), mounts, power steering hoses, etc, etc I could likely research some of this, but I need to buy it tomorrow if I’m going to do it. Has nice seats. Shoot, good seats go for $1500 these days.

excursion v10 7.3 swap

You'd almost need a donor 7.3L vehicle to harvest the electronics from it. You'll need a 7.3L PCM, IDM. wiring harness, fuel system, etc. I don't think the gasser tranny wil bolt up to the 7.3L, as it has a different bolt pattern. So you'd probably need a tranny as well, and possibly driveshafts unless the tranny length is the same. The problem is more complicated because the 7.3L was not offered in '04 models. But given enough money, it could be done.

excursion v10 7.3 swap

The V10 trans will not bolt to a 7.3l. But all 4R100s are the same length, so the driveshafts will fit. The wiring isn't too involved, you just remove all the wiring and replace it with 7.3L wiring.

Mark Kovalsky said: The wiring isn't too involved, you just remove all the wiring and replace it with 7.3L wiring. Click to expand...

Also, check your state's emissions requirements. In my state, California, for example, it is illegal.

Good point. Up here in Alaska (Anchorage area only) when emission checks were in effect, diesels and all vehicles newer than 5 years were exempt from checks, but after vehicles were 5 years old, diesels had to be checked to be sure that a gas engine hadn't been swapped out for a gas engine. The check wasn't more than checking the VIN against the registration. They didn't lift the hood or even sniff the exhaust.

Engine swap from V10 gas to 7.3L Diesel - Anyone done it before?

  • Add to quote

I'm considering picking up a cheap 2000 Excursion to swap in my 7.3L engine. The Ex has the V10 gas engine in it right now. I would have both the Ex and the donor F250 sitting side by side, so all the parts would be there. Any idea what is invovled for wiring? Would any wiring under the dash need to be swapped over? Thanks for any insight!

I'd be more tempted to trade or sell the two trucks and get an Excursion that already has a 7.3. You'd have to make a lot of wiring modifications and also probably have to swap out the front suspension. You'd never recover your investment and the modified Excursion would probably be hard to sell.

excursion v10 7.3 swap

i swaped my old 302 for a 7.3 and hade to rewire front to back and inside. I dont know how much the v10 weigh but you might want to box in the frame for streght. I went from a twin I beam to a Dana 60 for the streght. hope all this helps need anything else fell free to ask

Ok, my F250 is a 1999.5 and the Excursion is a 2000, so basically they are identical vehicles. The 2000 Excursion came with a 7.3L option, so I dont see the need to strengthen the frame or swap out the front suspention. Would the harness from the F250 not just swap directly across to the Excursion chassis and body? BTW the Excursion I may pick up is $3000, it runs and drives fine but has 530,000kms on it. Show me a 7.3L Excursion for under $6000 and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I was goin to say do it like I did, I sold my v-10 and bought a 7.3. But now I see your point since you picked it up so cheap.

excursion v10 7.3 swap

I would do it... since you have the donor truck. I am sure you would just have to swap almost all wire harnesses, instrument cluster and probably have to mess with a fuel system for the excursion since the gasser one may not be the same. Can't be too bad if you have both rigs side by side to swap parts!

excursion v10 7.3 swap

i did a swap from a V-10 to a 6.0..... easiest thing to do ever... just signed papers and VOILA!! a new truck!!! just kidding.. i have never heard ofa swap from a gasser to a diesel! good luck!!

excursion v10 7.3 swap

being that a excursion came diesel , it wont be that bad , it will be time consuming , the wiring will be the worst , lots of differences there , dash included , fuse boxes different , engine and trans swap will be a breeze i think ,go for it

Since you have the donor truck I would jsut do a swap. I jsut got done swapping a 5.0 ford motor in a 89 volvo for a buddy of mine. it was actually a pretty easy install. Rob

  1. Excursion swap a v10 for a 7.3

I have a 03 f=250 with the 7.3 to use for the swap. From what I have gathered, it would be very tough. I am currently swapping the body from a 2000 Gas v8 Excursion to the chassis of a wrecked 2002 Diesel Ex. And even though I'm leaving a ton of stuff attached to the diesel chassis, there is still a lot of differences between the two.

  4. 7.3 PSD Swap Project into 2005 V10 Excursion

Since I can't do the swap at home, I have some space in my grandparents' garage to get it done. I got out there at 9:05 AM this morning to prepare for the Excursion to arrive between 10 and 10:30. I had to put a trailer outside that had been stored inside, and also unload all the tools I brought out. Here's the '05 ready and waiting...

  5. 7.3 Godzilla and 10 speed trans in Excursion

Most likely these will be packing Ford's new 7.3-liter "Godzilla" gas engine and their revised 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, along with a 10-speed automatic and 2WD or 4WD. The Excursion should slot above the already massive Expedition and Expedition MAX, and should be at least 250 inches, or over 20 feet long.

  9. V10 to 7.3L Excursion

    1. replace the whole vehicle harness with an exact match 7.3l excursion harness (difficult and time consuming) 2. re-pin my engine harness at the 3 main firewall connections (time consuming) 3. make the harness a stand alone engine harness and leave all the non engine related wiring alone and intact on the Ex.

  10. Okay guys, 7.3 swap from the v10

Okay guys, 7.3 swap from the v10. My brother, whom I'm helping, has a v10 excursion. He works at a scrap yard and a running, driving 7.3 excursion came in. v10 to 7.3 swap, WITH DONOR TRUCK. Hi all, this is my first post here, and it is a doozy. I had an '02 7.3 excursion which was recently totaled in a wreck. 15. How difficult to swap from v10 to 7.3? (2004 f250 4x4)

The V10 trans will not bolt to a 7.3l. But all 4R100s are the same length, so the driveshafts will fit. The wiring isn't too involved, you just remove all the wiring and replace it with 7.3L wiring. "The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.".
