Rihanna is 'quietly planning' a huge comeback - here's what we know so far

By Abbie Reynolds

The Rihanna drought has been a long one but get out your Umbrella 'ellas because RiRi is reportedly planning a major comeback with a world tour and two new albums! Here's everything we know so far.

Listen to this article

We haven't had a new Rihanna album since 'ANTI' in 2016 but she remerged in the music scene when she dropped her first song in six years ' Lift Me Up ' for Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever.

This year the 'Needed Me' singer's Super Bowl performance became the most-watched halftime show ever. It was her first live performance in more than five years and she took the opportunity to reveal she was pregnant with her's and A$AP Rocky's second child.

As we near the end of 2023 fans are wondering - will 'R9' come this year, or in 2024? Well, despite Rihanna recently giving birth to her second son Riot Rose, it has been reported that she is gearing up for the comeback of a lifetime. RiRi insiders have since shut down the reports, saying 'no tour has been confirmed', but that won't stop the Navy manifesting a tour from their idol.

Even as a mum-of-two the Work doesn't stop, so it wouldn't surprise us if RiRi does announce a tour. Here's everything you need to know about the rumours on RiRi's mega return, including reports of a highly-anticipated world tour.

Rihanna has signed a £32 million deal with Live Nation

Will Rihanna be going on a world tour in 2024?

After reports claimed Rihanna's signed a multi-million pound deal with Live Nation, insiders close to the singer shut down the speculation saying: "No tour has been confirmed for Rihanna.”

It comes after sources claimed that she was planning an international tour in 2024 and 2025.

The deal with the entertainment company Live Nation "was created to facilitate a world tour," an insider told The Mirror .

"Her creative team is quietly at work in Los Angeles putting it all together as she raises her family. She’ll press play on the live show once she’s ready to go back to work,” it was said.

How to get tickets to Rihanna's world tour

In October it was claimed that the star had signed a mega deal with Live Nation. So far, Live Nation have not gone public with any tour dates or planned ticket sales but they will be our first point of call for any updates.

Rihanna and her long-term boyfriend A$AP Rocky welcomed their second son Riot into their lives in August so it might be later into 2024 than we'd like before she returns to stage. A newborn and a tour might even been too much for a powerhouse superstar like RiRi.

As soon as more information on Rihanna's tour and how to get tickets is available, we'll update this page!

When was Rihanna's last world tour?

Rihanna's last tour was The ANTI world tour in 2016 which started in March in Florida, Jacksonville and ended in November in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The 'ANTI' tour was the artist's seventh concert tour and was in support of her eighth studio album ANTI. Only Big Sean accompanied RiRi as a support act on her UK/Europe dates of the tour after The Weekend pulled out last minute. For her North America dates Rihanna had Travis Scott as her special guest.

The tour started just after her song 'Work' with Drake hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and she surprised fans across the world by bringing him onto stage to perform with her.

Rihanna shares sweet footage of her son

After teasing new music for years, Rihanna is currently sitting on an abundance of new tunes the insider continued: "[She] has two albums’ worth of material to release once she’s back.”

Rihanna's fandom pushed a theory a few years ago suggesting Rihanna's comeback could actually be a double album. With news that she has two albums' worth of material this theory could be coming true - now that would be quite the Rihanna revival.

After her Super Bowl performance this year she said she was "excited to actually put new music out" but she didn't have any updates - maybe this excitement could spur the new mum to get back into it sooner rather than later.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are now the parents of two little boys

Since her album hiatus the star has featured on a PARTYNEXTDOOR song 'Believe It', as well as releasing music for the Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever soundtrack with 'Lift Me Up'.

She returned to live performing in May of this year when she announced her second pregnancy at her Super Bowl halftime show. Dressed in an iconic red fit beside her dancers in all white, the 'Work' star flashed her baby bump.

Rihanna Touring Again After New Music Drops: "It's Only Fair"

Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show

Thankfully for her Navy, Rihanna hasn't been totally absent from the spotlight while taking a hiatus from music. Instead, we've seen her pour into Fenty Beauty/Skin, as well as her lingerie line. She made a triumphant return to the stage in 2022 with powerful contributions to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack like "Lift Me Up," but at this time, it's unclear when the mother of two plans to deliver her next studio LP.

2016's ANTI was an impressive body of work, with features coming from SZA and Drake on "Consideration" and "Work" respectively. It's unclear who Rih is interested in collaborating with on her next project, though many hip-hop heads have expressed interest in hearing a joint song between her and ASAP Rocky . During an interview with Entertainment Tonight earlier this week, the Barbadian artist gave an update on when we might hear new music from her, as well as any upcoming tour plans.

When is Rihanna Going on Tour Again?

"Well we're always gonna go back on tour," Rih told the outlet after laughing. "I feel like, when there's new music. We already know what that's gonna be, with the songs that I've performed my last tour. That was a long time ago, I feel like it's only fair that my fans get what they've been waiting on, which is new music. After that, lets just like, blow everything up," she declared, seemingly hinting at an explosive schedule of performances coming in the future.

Elsewhere in the news, Rihanna can't stop gushing about being a mother of two and watching her other half, ASAP Rocky, step confidently into fatherhood. Rumour has it that the Bad Gal is eager to see if they can conceive a girl in the future, though it's unclear how much time she wants to take off after having RZA and Riot back to back. Read more about the Mayers family at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Rather than turning away from her trauma, Rihanna remerged with her most revelatory and defiant work to date with her ‘Rated R’ album.

Published on

Rihanna Rated R

At the start of the 2010s, Rihanna had undeniably become the industry’s commercial darling of pop, R&B, hip-hop, and dancehall . With three hit albums under her belt – and a reputation as an artistic chameleon – she seemed unstoppable… until tragedy struck. With media headlines obsessing over her personal trauma, Rihanna’s world turned upside down, resulting in her most revelatory and vulnerable work to date: Rated R .

A rule-breaking spirit

During the lead up to Rated R , Rihanna dropped a few hints at her new direction. Her previous album, 2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad , embraced her rule-breaking spirit, while a bonus track on that album’s Reloaded edition, “Disturbia,” signaled a sharper transformation in her music videos, style, and song structures. Its haunting nature would predate Lady Gaga ’s The Fame Monster and “Bad Romance,” once again placing Rihanna ahead of her peers.

On The Ball: The 20 Best Football Songs Of All Time

How ariana grande redefined pop music with ‘sweetener’ and ‘thank u, next’.

Underlying the darker turn the singer was taking, on 3 June 2009, Kanye West released his music video for “Paranoid,” starring Rihanna in a victim role, speeding in a getaway car. The nightmarish imagery mirrored an experience she’d had earlier that year: a domestic-violence altercation with her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown.

Ready to take over the world… again

As pictures of Rihanna’s injured face leaked to the press, the singer endured criticisms and rumors about how she handled the situation, prompting her to take a break, both musically and from public appearances. After her appearance in Kanye’s video, however, she returned to the studio. Singing on a triumphant hook from Jay Z and Ye’s “Run This Town,” Rihanna made it clear: she was ready to take over the world once again.

Released on November 23, 2009, Rated R plays out like a classic horror film. A narrator opens the album with an ominous introduction: “Ladies and gentlemen/To those among you who are easily frightened/We suggest you turn away now/To those of you who think they can take it/We say: welcome to the Mad House!”

Over a chilling dubstep beat, Rihanna encourages listeners to “come on, come on”, before leading into the second track, “Wait Your Turn.” Full of sports metaphors, “Wait Your Turn” is Rihanna at her cockiest. Shot in stark black-and-white in the accompanying video, Rihanna struts around like a latter-day Grace Jones , sporting a slicked-back Mohawk and declaring, “The wait is over!”

Emotional excavations

Rated R ’s official first single, “Russian Roulette,” would take an even darker tone. “As my life flashes before my eyes/I’m wondering if I will ever see another sunrise,” she painfully recounts on a ballad that sparked another watercooler moment surrounding her private life.

Rihanna - Russian Roulette

But “Russian Roulette” was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to the kind of emotional excavation she would perform on the album. Full of gut-wrenching ballads, Rated R sees Rihanna trying to separate her real self from tabloid narratives and a packaged persona. Even with a team of top pop producers at her disposal, she was heavily involved with the songwriting process, co-writing nine of the album’s 13 tracks and receiving an executive producer credit.

“Stupid In Love” sounds like a pained torch song, the singer wailing, “This is stupid, I’m not stupid… I may be dumb,” as she forgives her partner, despite her friends’ warnings. “Fire Bomb” continues this theme of tortured love, as Rihanna and her lover meet a Bonnie and Clyde ending. “I just wanna set you on fire so I won’t have to burn alone,” she asserts on the hook. In the background, gasoline is sparked and flames crackle to a hard-hitting arena guitar as Rihanna takes it to the bridge.

Fire Bomb

“Cold Case Love” is another gothic-tinged affair, complete with funeral organs and violin solos, on which Rihanna liberates herself from a toxic relationship. “Release me now, ’cause I did my time,” she sings. Once again, electric guitar fuels the ballad, underscored by a rhumba groove that continues on the Latin-flavoured, LGBTQ -centric track “Te Amo.”

The emancipation of RiRi

Rated R stands the test of time as a fan favorite. Similar to Anti , the album pushed boundaries for Rihanna as an artist, furthering her genre experimentation and avant-garde aesthetics. As her first explicit album – with a Parental Advisory sticker on the cover, no less – Rihanna ventured into territory that most of her pop peers weren’t bold enough to embrace.

Rated R also sees her dive into rock’n’roll decadence on “ROCKSTAR 101,” with an assist from Guns N’ Roses axeman Slash , as she seductively yells, “I told ya, baby… I’m a rockstar!” On “G4L,” Rihanna takes on the persona of a vengeful femme fatale – or “Gangster 4 Life” – flipping the script from “Russian Roulette” as she goes from victim to aggressor.

Rihanna - ROCKSTAR 101 ft. Slash

One of the few singles that contrasts with the dark energy of the entire Rated R album is the hit “Rude Boy,” on which Rihanna talks about her penchant for bad boys over a dancehall track reminiscent of her earlier albums Music Of The Sun and A Girl Like Me . The anthem topped the Billboard Hot 100, a taste of what would come.

Rihanna - Rude Boy

A last reflection

Rated R is, for the most part, a solo affair with few guests or features, one of the exceptions being a spot from Black Eyed Peas frontman and producer will.i.am, who wrote and features on “Photographs.” Originally intended for his group’s The END album, Rihanna fell in love with the track and used it for her own project, where it remains a sleeper hit in her catalog.

Meanwhile, on the Top 10 hit “Hard,” Rihanna does her best hip-hop posturing over aggressive synths and pounding piano notes, enlisting rapper Young Jeezy for a Dirty South co-sign. From the jump, Rihanna lets you know that nothing (and no one) is going to slow her down: “No pain is forever/Yup, you know this,” she spits.

After putting herself through the ringer, Rihanna finally finds closure on the aptly titled “The Last Song.” With shimmering guitars and moody feedback, it’s the emotional climax of Rated R : a last reflection on the person she once was and the artist she was destined to become.

Why rihanna hasn’t released an album in six years.

Rihanna

For Rihanna, it was once all about her work, work, work, work, work in music.

For most of her career, the pop superstar had cranked out hit after hit — from her 2005 debut single “Pon de Replay” to her 2007 Grammy winner “Umbrella” to her last No. 1 smash, 2016’s “Work.”

But after hitting what many consider to be her artistic peak with her last album “Anti” — which was released six years ago on Jan. 28, 2016 — Rihanna largely went M.I.A. from music. Yes, there has been the occasional guest feature such as “Wild Thoughts” with DJ Khaled and “Loyalty” with Kendrick Lamar — both released in 2017 — but it’s been six long years since she’s delivered her own album.

“ ‘Anti’ was everything. And then she was like, ‘Yo, I’m done,’ ” said Vibe R&B reporter Mya Abraham, who considers herself “part of the Navy” of Rihanna fans. “She was just like, ‘That was everything that I had at that moment for one album, and I’m gonna take a break and put [my energy] into other things.’ ”

Rihanna

And while Rihanna has teased eager fans on social media that new music is coming for a couple of years — there were even rumors swirling around that she was working on a reggae album at one point — no firm plans to release anything have been revealed. (But of course, there’s always the chance of a surprise drop at any time.)

“I can’t say when I’m going to drop,” Rihanna told British Vogue in 2020. “But I am very aggressively working on music.”

But as much as she was once grinding in music, Rihanna is now grinding in beauty and fashion. She launched her Fenty Beauty line in 2017 and then followed that by debuting her Savage x Fenty lingerie brand in 2018. Those companies turned the 33-year-old artist born Robyn Rihanna Fenty into a billionaire — last year Forbes reported that she has amassed a $1.7 billion fortune, making her the world’s richest female musician. Now a certified mogul, she’s bigger than music.

Rihanna

“She’s broken through the ceiling … and that’s a bigger deal than having a No. 1 hit,” said Lori Majewski, host of “Fierce: Women in Music” on SiriusXM Volume. “Now that doesn’t mean that she couldn’t come back and have a hit: I think if she’d drop a [single] tomorrow, it would be massive. But I don’t think she needs it anymore.”

No doubt, Rihanna has been embracing being a trailblazing boss in beauty and fashion. In fact, last weekend she celebrated the opening of her first brick-and-mortar Savage x Fenty store in Las Vegas, with more to come.

By promoting diversity and inclusivity for women of all shades and sizes in beauty and fashion, Rihanna also stood for something that was more important than a three-minute pop song. That has led to what is now known as the “Fenty effect” in the fashion and beauty game, with her competitors stepping up their efforts to represent all kinds of women.

“I’m shocked by people saying, ‘Oh my God, what made you think of making makeup for black girls?’ ” Rihanna told British Vogue. “I’m like, ‘What? You thought this was like a marketing strategy? Like I’m a genius?’ It’s shocking most of the time. Then it turns into disappointment that this is groundbreaking right now. In my mind, this was just normal.”

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

With Rihanna’s businesses booming, “she’s like a modern-day Dr. Dre,” said Majewski.

“Rihanna really followed in the footsteps of what Puffy was able to do, what Jay-Z was able to do, and what Kanye is doing now, and that is ‘How do you take your brand and create a lifestyle around it?’ ” said culture expert Emil Wilbekin.

“Rihanna definitely has kind of found her center as a woman,” he added. “She established this really incredible music career, but then she really found herself with the beauty company and with the fashion. She loves beauty and fashion. And now she gets to play in that space, and she’s wildly successful at doing it. Then she can have fun, right? So you see her now being out with her friends more, really creating the lifestyle that supports the beauty and fashion business.”

After making her debut when she was just 17, Rihanna has also been catching up on living her life, with boyfriend A$AP Rocky by her side. “She’s been famous for half of her life now,” said Majewski.

Bryson Tiller, Rihanna and DJ Khaled at the 2018 Grammys

“Unlike real jobs where you have off weekends, pop stars never have off, ever. Every weekend they’re touring somewhere, they’re doing an appearance. When you put out an album, it’s a grind. She’s doing the thing we kind of all want to do: She made her money and now she doesn’t have to work every day … She’s living her life — and she is living it in love.”

And still only 33, she has plenty of time to return to music — on her own timetable and on her own terms. “It’s not about selling records, it’s about making a statement, and I think that’s what Rihanna — if she comes back to music — will look to do,” said Majewski.

“She’s already broken so many records. She’s already had so many hit singles. She doesn’t need more of those. If she is going to come back to music, there’s going to be a reason, a mission. It will be her ‘Lemonade.’ ”

Review: Rihanna's Anti World Tour Montreal stop is pro-pop

Merchandise promised anti-commercial and anti-social aspects to this night

Although billed as the Anti World Tour, Night One of a pair of Rihanna shows at the Bell Centre did not rage against the conformist pop machine as much as our host had perhaps intended.

In front of a crowd of 14,005 Wednesday evening, the 28-year-old Barbadian singer didn’t necessarily go through the motions, but she was no iconoclast either. The all-white set with trap doors for her, her backing dancers and her band was nothing out of the ordinary as far as arena concert productions go, and her setlist was so full of ubiquitous hits from her most recent album, Anti, and her past releases that it felt more like a pop coronation than a disruption. If the words on her merch were to be taken as gospel, then there were supposed to be anti-commercial and anti-social aspects to this night. Instead, there was conviviality and singalongs. A confident, deliberate return to form following the longest gap between albums of her decade-plus career.

The sleight of hand opening number, Stay, which required a disguised Rihanna to emerge through the audience and take her place on a small stage atop (and that actually enclosed) her crew’s soundboard, appeared to be inspired by Kanye West’s Yeezus tour, and the dancing druids and front-tilted screen on the main stage did nothing to dispel that notion. Her stamp was soon put on proceedings with Woo from Anti, which found her dancing on a moving catwalk from the back of the room to the front.

An uneven selection of songs in the earlygoing was quickly forgotten with Bitch Better Have My Money and its irresistible catchphrase of a hook. Consideration, the opener from 2016’s Anti, cruised along with a jumping drum pattern. A medley comprised of hooks she sang on famous rap hits reiterated her unassailable pop credentials, but only West’s All of the Lights still packed a punch compared her aged T.I. and Jay Z collaborations. Her rap side wasn’t the only time Rihanna bunched songs by subgenre: There were also separate dancehall and EDM sections during the 90-minute set. One could also argue her faithful cover of Tame Impala’s languid epic New Person, Same Old Mistakes was a piece of a larger psychedelic foray with apropos colourful swirls in the background. Her rendition of FourFiveSeconds, the largely acoustic number she did with West and Paul McCartney, was a surprise stripped down number.

The dancehall section received the most attention of the night, if only because it included current hit single Work, which wasn’t any more or less explosive on stage than on the radio. Rude Boy hasn’t lost any of its silly charm, either, and the version of Man Down on this tour was remixed by Montreal producer Shash’u, giving the night an unexpected local angle. The electronic dance numbers were done with illuminated, inflatable cocoons surrounding the stage. A neutered remix of We Found Love sputtered out, allowing Rihanna’s incredible contortionists to show off their inhuman moves. The progression of the stage from sleek and angular to glowing plastic cylinders to a bubble bath was remarkably seamless.

The singer didn’t speak much, only breaking from the gameplan to compliment her crew and point out an adorable infant wearing noise-cancelling headphones near the front of the stage. She even did away with the tired encore ritual by continuing to play till the end, only stopping briefly to give a preemptive goodbye. By the end, the artificial bath suds that started falling behind the group during Diamonds had completely runneth over, signaling that the needs of her fans were met. Not an anti-pop experience by any means, but surely a professional one.

Why Rihanna’s ‘sold out’ Wembley Stadium concert was half empty

After Rihanna played Wembley Stadium, the gig went semi-viral online. Not because someone proposed during “Umbrella” or because the singer was in emotional tears onstage, but because the “sold out” stadium was half empty.

A huge number of seats at the 90,000-capacity stadium were left empty throughout the gig thanks to touts buying up tickets and failing to sell them on for extortionate prices, according to The Mirror .

It is thought some tickets for the Anti world tour were sold for huge markups on second-hand websites, while those not fetching the huge prices went unused, leading to the empty seats.

This isn’t the first case of empty seats thanks to touts: tickets to the Harry Potter West End show, The Cursed Child , went unsold after appearing online for £2,000 plus .

Many artists, including Adele , have been attempting to tackle touts head-on, but tickets almost always end up finding their way online. Mumford & Sons tour manager Adam Tudhope told the tabloid, “We work hard to make the face value of the ticket as accessible to as many of the fans as possible

“So there’s nothing worse for the band playing a ‘sold-out’ show than looking out at empty seats because touts bought the tickets and tried to sell them on secondary sites at massively inflated prices.”

Music festivals guide 2016

Recently, Ticketmaster’s ex-CEO revealed why it is so hard to get tickets to the biggest gigs , blaming touts and how they’re constantly finding ways to be the first to buy tickets.

Eminem and Rihanna perform on the The Monster Tour

Eminem & Rihanna ‘s long-awaited Monster tour, which kicked off Aug. 7 in Los Angeles at a sold-out Rose Bowl, is billed as a co-headlining tour between the two music superstars, and the pair treated the show as if they were equals, starting and ending together. However, sharing the stage with Eminem is like playing one-on-one with LeBron James or acting with Daniel Day-Lewis. Eminem is, as he reminded everyone last weekend at Lollapalooza , one of the half dozen most compelling performers in music today.

That was evident from the outset of the show, which opens with a short Silence of the Lambs -inspired film that finds Sopranos star Michael Imperioli walking Rihanna down a San Quentin prison hall. As she saunters into a cell, just the back of Eminem’s head and trademark blonde hair appeared on the screen and the Rose Bowl crowd lost their collective minds.

Keeping with the motif in the opening “Numb,” Rihanna started the show on her own, only to have a platform rise on the side of the stage where Eminem, strapped to a stretcher a la Hannibal Lecter, emerged mid-song. Like the Jay-Z and Beyonce On The Run tour (both shows hit the Rose Bowl this week, coincidently) there is a fair amount of interaction between the two headliners.

Following “Won’t Back Down,” the Rihanna portion of the night, which lasted for almost an hour, began with her highlighting her vocals on an impressive and impassioned “What Now.” The song was one of her highpoints, along with the gorgeous “Stay” and the reggae track “Man Down,” and the dance-heavy “Where Have You Been.”

The one drawback to Rihanna’s set, which admittedly had fans going crazy, was how produced it felt at times, with the numerous backup dancers joining her for choreographed moves on songs like “Cake” and “Rude Boy,” distracting from the performance. It’s hard to digest her pop polish when she’s on the same bill with someone as raw and intense as Eminem. Every time Marshal Mathers emerged on stage, he was a lightning rod for attention, like when he reappeared at the end of her set to join in on a stunning “Love The Way You Lie.”

After the song ended and Rihanna walked offstage, Eminem said simply, “California, let’s go!” And with that, the Monster tour went off. “Square Dance,” “Marshall Matters,” “Stan,” with Rihanna singing the Dido “Thank You” refrain,” an anthemic “The Way I Am,” “Berzerk” — it was one knockout performance after another. And his lightning speed delivery on “Rap God” was simply jaw-dropping.

Just as Rihanna’s best moments came when she let her stage persona go and showed her warmth, Eminem shone as he introduced “I’m Not Afraid.” “This song I want to dedicate to anyone who ever lost anyone to addiction,” he said, referencing his own battles with the disease by adding, “I could not have gotten through it without you.”

Rihanna then returned for her encores, coming back for both “Diamonds” and “We Found Love,” before Eminem delivered “Lose Yourself.” Fittingly, the almost three-hour show ended with both performing “The Monster.”
