Andromeda Galaxy

Andromeda Galaxy, The Cage remastered

The Andromeda Galaxy was an inhabited galaxy located in the universe within relative proximity to the Milky Way . Andromeda had two satellite galaxies. ( TOS : " The Corbomite Maneuver ", " I, Mudd ", " By Any Other Name ")

An image depicting the Andromeda Galaxy was scanned by the Talosians as they reviewed the library computer files on board USS Enterprise in 2254 . ( TOS-R : " The Cage ")

A picture of the Andromeda Galaxy was on display in the briefing room of the USS Enterprise when the crew was reviewing star charts to search for the origin of an unknown buoy . ( TOS : " The Corbomite Maneuver ")

An image of the galaxy was on display on one of the large bridge monitors aboard the USS Enterprise . ( TOS : " Charlie X ", " The Naked Time ", " The Galileo Seven ", " Dagger of the Mind ")

An ancient humanoid race from the Andromeda Galaxy became extinct following the destruction of their homeworld when their sun went supernova . Remnants of the species survived for a time on scattered outposts but eventually died out, leaving their android populations on their own. One of these android-populated outposts was the planet Mudd in the Milky Way Galaxy. ( TOS : " I, Mudd ")

Centuries ago, the Kelvans became aware of dangerously rising radiation levels in Andromeda, a development expected to make that galaxy uninhabitable for their species within ten thousand years (or ten millennia) . The Kelvan Empire dispatched expeditions of multi-generational starships to explore the neighboring galaxies for territories suitable for conquest and occupation. Hypothetically, a Constitution -class starship running at maximum warp would take thousands of years to complete the journey to Andromeda. ( TOS : " By Any Other Name ")

Star Trek's Prequel Movie Could Be A Secret Section 31 Origin Story

I don't care if modern star trek breaks established canon, star trek's new warp drive breaks the prime directive in a way no-one expected.

  • Andromeda, created by Gene Roddenberry, shares connections with Star Trek, including executive producer Majel Barrett, but the two series never crossed over.
  • Andromeda was originally conceived by Roddenberry decades before it aired, and it was a successor to his other posthumous project, Earth: Final Conflict.
  • While Andromeda and Star Trek differ in setting, time period, and societal structure, there are some intriguing similarities, such as the introduction of space travel by Vulcan and Verdran species.

Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda has a handful of connections to the Star Trek franchise beyond their shared creator. Starring former Hercules: The Legendary Journeys star Kevin Sorbo, the series aired between 2000 and 2005 on the Global Television Network in Canada and in broadcast syndication in the US. Andromeda was, therefore, airing concurrently with Star Trek: Enterprise but they never crossed over with each other. This is because Andromeda was never produced as a Star Trek show, despite it being originally conceived by Roddenberry before his death in 1991.

In 1997, Roddenberry's wife and beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation guest star Majel Barrett began exploring the archive for unmade projects. Interestingly, Kevin Sorbo's character High Guard Captain Dylan Hunt was a name that Roddenberry had previously used in two previous failed TV pilots from the mid-1970s. This suggests that Roddenberry had conceived of the show three decades before it finally reached screens. Andromeda was a successor to another posthumous Roddenberry project - Earth: Final Conflict - which had proven successful enough to inspire another adaptation of an unmade concept from the archives.

How Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda Connects To Star Trek

The connections between Andromeda and Star Trek are largely behind-the-scenes ones. One of Andromeda 's executive producers was Majel Barrett, who as well as being Roddenberry's widow, had voiced Star Trek 's computers, played Lwaxanna Troi, and Star Trek: The Original Series ' Number One and Nurse Chapel. While Barrett had also appeared in 11 episodes of Earth: Final Conflict , she did not star in any episode from Andromeda 's five seasons.

In developing Andromeda , Barrett called on the services of Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who had worked with the Star Trek franchise for nearly a decade. Wolfe first came to the franchise via a spec script he sold to Star Trek: The Next Generation , which was the wild west comedy "A Fistful of Datas". Based on this, Wolfe was attached to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and wrote, or co-wrote, over 30 episodes of the series. Wolfe's episodes ranged from the high-concept comedy of his TNG script to much more hard-hitting and dramatic episodes like DS9 's "The Wire" and "Hard Time".

Roddenberry’s Andromeda’s Differences From Star Trek

It's long been speculated that Andromeda began life as a Star Trek spinoff set in the very far future. Where Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek was set in the 22nd and 23rd centuries, Andromeda was predominantly set in the year CY 10087 which roughly translated as the 52nd century. Space travel in Andromeda relying on slipstream rather than warp drive and the various alien races and planets are completely separate from those in Star Trek . That being said, there are some intriguing links. For example, there's a similarity between the name Vulcan and Verdran, the two species responsible for introducing space travel to humanity in Star Trek and Andromeda respectively.

Rather than an egalitarian Federation built on socialism, Roddenberry's Andromeda had a constitutional monarchy known as the Systems Commonwealth. After being awoken 300 years into his future, Kevin Sorbo's Dylan Hunt sets about trying to re-establish this utopian and democratic monarchy with the help of a ragtag salvage crew. It's therefore interesting that in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, 20 years after Andromeda premiered, Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery were rebuilding Starfleet and the Federation in their own far future. If Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda did begin life as a Star Trek spinoff set in a dystopian future, then Discovery finally revealed what that show may have looked like.

The Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way and part of the Local Group. From its closest point to the Alpha Quadrant it is approximately 2.5 million light years away. Intelligent lifeforms in Andromeda include the Kelvans , the Saer'nar and the Archein . ( TOS : " By Any Other Name "; On a Knife Edge , Star Trek: Odyssey )

In 2384 , Section 31 sent Theseus , aboard the USS Phoenix -X , to the Andromeda Galaxy using an altered-transwarp engine, in order to gain the Kelvans as Section 31 allies. Upon entering the Galaxy, the Phoenix -X was forced out of transwarp due to abnormally high radiation levels. The Kelvans chose to keep their dominant values and not accept Theseus' offer. Instead, Theseus found the Kelvans to be developing Omega molecules. Theseus then acquired a group of these molecules for himself, suspending them within an Andromedan android's abdomen using Kelvan technology. The Phoenix -X returned home to the Milky Way safely and had the adjustments to their engine dismantled. ( Star Trek: Phoenix-X : " Forbidden Crossing, Part III ")

In 2385 , USS Cole medical personnel discovered microorganisms from the Andromeda Galaxy like bacteria thrived on isolytic bursts and adapted to subspace radiation , indicating that galaxy had higher concentrations of subspace radiation. ( Henglaar, M.D. : " Profit Without Honor ")

Information [ ]

The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224, and is often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula in older texts. Andromeda is the nearest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way, but not the closest galaxy overall. As it is visible from Earth as a faint smudge on a moonless night, it is the farthest object visible to the naked eye, and can be seen even from urban areas with binoculars. It gets its name from the area of the sky in which it appears, the Andromeda constellation, which was named after the mythological princess Andromeda. Andromeda is the largest galaxy of the Local Group, which consists of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 30 other smaller galaxies. Although the largest, Andromeda may not be the most massive, as recent findings suggest that the Milky Way contains more dark matter and may be the most massive in the grouping. The 2006 observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope revealed that M31 contains one trillion (1012) stars, more than the number of stars in our own galaxy, which is estimated to be c. 200-400 billion.

While the 2006 estimates put the mass of the Milky Way to be ~80% of the mass of Andromeda, which is estimated to be 7.1 × 1011 solar masses, a 2009 study concluded that Andromeda and the Milky Way are about equal in mass. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way are expected to collide in perhaps 4.5 billion years

At an apparent magnitude of 3.4, the Andromeda Galaxy is notable for being one of the brightest Messier objects, making it easily visible to the naked eye even when viewed from areas with moderate light pollution. Although it appears more than six times as wide as the full Moon when photographed through a larger telescope, only the brighter central region is visible to the naked eye or when viewed using a binoculars or a small telescope.

Local group [ ]

Structure [ ].

The Andromeda Galaxy seen in infrared by the Spitzer Space Telescope, one of NASA's four Great Space Observatories.

Based on its appearance in visible light, the Andromeda Galaxy is classified as an SA(s)b galaxy in the de Vaucouleurs-Sandage extended classification system of spiral galaxies. However, data from the 2MASS survey showed that the bulge of M31 has a box-like appearance, which implies that the galaxy is actually a barred galaxy with the bar viewed almost directly along its long axis.

Satellites [ ]

Like the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy has satellite galaxies, consisting of 14 known dwarf galaxies. The best known and most readily observed satellite galaxies are M32 and M110. Based on current evidence, it appears that M32 underwent a close encounter with M31 (Andromeda) in the past. M32 may once have been a larger galaxy that had its stellar disk removed by M31, and underwent a sharp increase of star formation in the core region, which lasted until the relatively recent past.

M110 also appears to be interacting with M31, and astronomers have found a stream of metal-rich stars in the halo of M31 that appears to have been stripped from these satellite galaxies. M110 does contain a dusty lane, which may indicate recent or ongoing star formation.

In 2006 it was discovered that nine of these galaxies lay along a plane that intersects the core of the Andromeda Galaxy, rather than being randomly arranged as would be expected from independent interactions. This may indicate a common tidal origin for the satellites.

Future collision of the Milky Way with Andromeda [ ]

The Andromeda Galaxy is approaching the Milky Way at about 100 to 140 kilometres per second (62 to 87 mi/s), so it is one of the few blue-shifted galaxies. The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way are thus expected to collide in perhaps 4.5 billion years, although the details are uncertain since Andromeda's tangential velocity with respect to the Milky Way is only known to within about a factor of two. A likely outcome of the collision is that the galaxies will merge to form a giant elliptical galaxy. Such events are frequent among the galaxies in galaxy groups. The fate of the Earth and the Solar System in the event of a collision are currently unknown. If the galaxies do not merge, there is a small chance that the Solar System could be ejected from the Milky Way or join Andromeda.

Trek Adjacent: Andromeda, the Big Ol’ Ship That Could

Kennedy allen  •  august 3, 2021.

During this Centennial celebration, we’ve decided to explore the additional creative worlds of Gene Roddenberry. There are multitudes of similarities found among the different stories, as well as some striking parallels to the Star Trek universe. There are also some staggering differences, both great and terrible, and we hope that you’ll engage along with us.

Live long and prosper, Kennedy

andromedans star trek

Do you remember Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda ? Airing alongside Star Trek: Enterprise from October ‘00 until May ‘05, Andromeda had all of the ingredients for a hit…potentially. There was a fancy new ship, a new method of starship propulsion, and a handful of new species to explore. While its production quality was indicative of the times, there were several other reasons why the show should have worked. But before we focus on the shouldas and the couldas, let’s review the general premise.

The Systems Commonwealth and the March of the High Guard

Right from the door there are obvious parallels between the Commonwealth and the High Guard armada and the Federation and Starfleet. The Commonwealth was an interstellar network of allied planets spanning across the Milky Way, Triangulum, and, coincidentally enough, Andromeda galaxies. Founded by a centaur-like species called the Vedrans, the Old Commonwealth originally consisted of more than a million worlds, existing initially as a constitutional monarchy before reforming into a peaceful, more democratic commonwealth. This peace lasted for nearly 10,000 years before a devastating uprising from a vast group of genetically engineered demi-humans called Nietzcheans and their various allies. The revolt plunged the Commonwealth into disarray, and its fall occurred shortly thereafter.

The Commonwealth had its own highly-trained, technologically advanced armada in the High Guard, the major difference between it and Starfleet being the High Guard existed in a strictly military capacity with few (if any) directives centering around scientific exploration. High Guard starships like the Andromeda Ascendant were warships first and foremost, staffed by a crew of thousands, featuring a wide assortment of high-grade weaponry. They were also sentient, equipped with their own personalized AI to monitor and control shipwide operations. These AIs appeared on the ship’s screen, as well as in the form of holographic projections when necessary. While the Andromeda ’s AI was responsible for the ship’s main computer and navigation systems, the AI was unable to pilot the ship on her own. Requiring humanoid pilots at the helm, the massive, extremely complex, and way-faster-than-the-speed-of-light slipstream system was a quantum network of intergalactic pathways too complex for an AI to maneuver on their own. One could argue that the slipstream bears strong similarities to the mycelial network featured in Star Trek: Discovery . However, the strongest similarity lies in the overall premise of the show itself.

DISCO Much?

The first season illustrates the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the Andromeda Ascendant and her captain, Dylan Hunt ( Kevin Sorbo; yes, yes – we know ). During the peak of the Old Commonwealth, Hunt, his crew, and ship’s AI, Andromeda ( Lexa Doig ), were caught in the event horizon of a black hole during a Nietzchean uprising, freezing them in time for more than 300 years. The Commonwealth abruptly collapsed during that time, marking the beginning of the period known as “The Long Night”. Sound familiar?

Enter the Eureka Maru , a scrappy little cargo ship captained by Beka Valentine ( Lisa Ryder ), a semi-retired con artist and ace pilot. She and her crew – a human engineering genius (and kind of a creep) Seamus Harper ( Gordon Michael Woolvett ), a mysteriously innocent life support officer Trance Gemini ( Laura Bertram ), and a reformed and devoutly religious Magog monk, the Reverend Behemial Far Traveler aka Rev Bem ( Brent Strait ) – are commissioned to retrieve the long-dormant Andromeda to sell to the highest bidder. In freeing the ship, they inadvertently liberate Captain Hunt and the Andromeda from their paralysis in time, thrusting them unceremoniously into the present. To complicate things further, the aforementioned highest bidder hired a backup “insurance” squad full of mercenaries, led by elegantly pragmatic Nietzschean badass, Tyr Anasazi ( Keith Hamilton Cobb ).

Ultimately, Capt. Hunt convinces Tyr, Beka, and the crew of the Maru to join his quest to reunite the worlds of the Systems Commonwealth. Initially they agree for their own personal gain, but eventually they begin to align themselves with the idea of order. Harper even built a custom android avatar for the ship’s AI, and affectionately nicknamed her Rommie. Over the course of the show’s 5 season run, they managed to convince 50 worlds to join the New Commonwealth, marking a new era of intergalactic order that had not existed in centuries.

andromedans star trek

So What Went Wrong?

Not only is this series basically the bones of Discovery ’s third season, but there were plenty of new perspectives within it that didn’t exist in Star Trek itself at the time. The anarchist vibes of The Long Night possessed the grit of shows like Babylon 5 , and focused more on intergalactic politics than scientific progress. There was more action than the average Trek series at the time, cool new weapons like the High Guard-issue force lance, and the dazzling concept of sentient starships. So why didn’t it last?

Some could argue that the aesthetic of the early 2000’s permeated the supposedly-futuristic time frame of the show. After all, Hunt and the Andromeda awoke in Commonwealth Year 10087 (approximately 5167 AD ), so why were the women styled like a Claire’s ad? Some could argue that the graphics weren’t the greatest, even though they improved as seasons went on. But the most obvious hindrance of the show’s progress was in its leading role, glaring issues with Sorbo notwithstanding, believe it or not. Sure, the actor’s controversial political stance certainly doesn’t help, but a call to “rekindle the light of civilization” made by a cis het white male didn’t translate well from a place of military influence, rather than the scientific perspective Trek fans had grown to expect from a Roddenberry property. Hunt’s mission to restore the Commonwealth reeks of imperialism in the worst possible ways, and Sorbo never managed to portray a likeable enough character for audiences to rally behind.

Separately, Cobb’s performance as Tyr Anasazi sprinted laps around Sorbo’s yawn-inducing depiction of Hunt, despite being tragically underused as a character. Eventually the actor grew frustrated by the direction of the character, and Cobb left the show at the end of its fourth season. Immediately after his departure, it became glaringly obvious that Sorbo may have had top-billing, but it was Cobb’s gently confident and eloquently vicious portrayal that led the tone of the show. The writers did their best (?) to wrap the show neatly, but it’s flat finish alongside the equally (if not moreso) flat end to Enterprise in 2005 marked the end of this new surge of Roddenberry-flavored content until J.J. Abrams rebooted Star Trek in 2009.

The Trouble With Innovation

Perhaps Andromeda was a bit ahead of its time – the early 2000s were chock-full of rough-hewn, hacker, dystopian sci-fi films and television, and maybe a post-futuristic, intergalactic, sometimes-utopian, unified society was not what audiences wanted to see at the time. The concept of a quantum slipstream network connecting planets, star systems, and galaxies like the neural pathways of the human brain might have also been a bit of a reach to fans who were accustomed to warp drive. The makeup caliber could have been better, sure. So could have the graphics. And while High Guard uniforms were kind of cool-looking, Hunt was really the only character regularly in one, and Sorbo strutted around with such an obviously high opinion of himself that did not translate well on-screen. At all. Ever.

So it looks as though Discovery showrunners dug in the Roddenberry crates for inspiration. That’s a huge flex for Roddenberry’s body of work, especially considering that DISCO took some heavy themes from Andromeda and vastly improved upon them by translating them to the Star Trek universe. While there may not be one definitive answer as to why Andromeda wasn’t a hit, we can’t deny that its best elements remain timeless. Finding commonalities amongst ourselves and each other, uniting despite political duress and unfavorable social conditions across the vastness of space are achievements humanity is still struggling to reach. But if Andromeda , like Star Trek , teaches us nothing else, it’s that there’s always a light at the end of the darkness should you choose to work towards it.

My brother Jerry Stokes is having trouble sharing the link to his song lyrics, so here they are:

“Avatar of the Sun”.

Parody of Island in the Sun” by Weaser.

No one knew about the girl, except for tail and skin purple. Then Rev Bem, he left the fold, and her skin, it turned to gold.

She’s the avatar of the sun. In my mind, we’re having fun. And it makes me feel so fin I can’t control my brain.

Then one day, I had a dream, the two of us, we got married. When we got to our hotel room, “Andromeda” was on the screen.

She’s the avatar of the sun. In my mind we’re having fun. And it makes me feel so fine I can’t control my brain.

We’ll run away, in daydreams. We’ll spend sometime, in slipstream. We’ll never feel bad anymore.

We’ll run away in daydreams. We’ll spend sometime in slipstrean. We’ll never feel bad anymore.

We’ll never feel bad anymore!

I did a song for “Andromeda” and it’s all about Trance. Here it is: http://www.samuelstokesmusic.com/ ../Avatar_of_the_Sun…

I can’t wait for Earth Final Conflict.

I have epilepsy. I have been in a trance. Trance is my favorite character.

I was always under the impression that Andromeda was an idea by Robert Hewitt Wolfe for an actual Star Trek show.. and when that didn’t work out he developed his own universe for it. I never really bothered with the show, other than wondering what on earth Season 5 was all about ( from what little I occasionally saw).

Mission Statement

This wiki provides copious and detailed information regarding an alternative formulation of the Star Trek universe. Our intent is to go back, put right what once was wrong and provide a more consistent quasiscience and backdrop in which to set our story.

The USS Heisenberg is an experimental ship equipped with transwarp drive; upon its first test in 2391, the drive fused and the ship massively overshot its intended destination coordinates, landing itself inside the Andromeda Galaxy, Messier 31. Its mission is simple: to get home. At standard warp (warp 9), this would take approximately 800 years without use of the transwarp drive; as such, its crew must acquire the necessary components to reassemble the transwarp drive and return home.

Our intended audience is twofold; on the one hand, this wiki is useful as a reference with regard to the ship itself, its crew, and any other material which may come in useful. On the other, we hope to interest fans of the Star Trek franchise with our treatment of existing technologies and science. These concepts have already been warmly received on the Star Trek Online message board.

Step 7 You are authentic.

  • Andromedans’ love for art and logic appears in their career choices. You might be drawn to creative, problem-solving fields like engineering, interior design, architecture, and research.

Step 10 You’re a nature lover.

  • Andromedans are also huge animal lovers. You might feel called to help rescue and protect wildlife.
  • Many Andromedan starseeds want to live in remote places off of the grid. You might be sensitive to technology and feel overwhelmed or even drained when you use it too much.

Step 11 You’re drawn to space and metaphysics.

Andromedan Starseed Appearance

  • Helping people spiritually ascend is believed to raise Earth’s vibrational frequencies, promoting peace and helping people unite as one.
  • Some people believe that the Earth is controlled by reptilians, who happen to be the Andromedans’ enemy. So, their mission is also to rid the world of these beings.

Step 2 An Andromedan starseed’s goal is to heal and protect the world.

Awakening Your Andromedan Starseed Origins

Meditation and mindfulness can activate your starseed energy.

Andromeda class (25th century)

The Andromeda -class was a type of exploration cruiser fielded by the Federation Starfleet beginning in 2410 . It was an advanced variant of the venerable Galaxy -class of the mid- 24th century . ( STO video game : Delta Rising )

History [ ]

With the Andromeda -class the Starfleet Corps of Engineers meant to duplicate the success of the earlier Pathfinder -class update to the Intrepid -class hull plan. Designed and built at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards , the Andromeda -class featured improved capabilities over even retrofitted Galaxy -class vessels. ( STO website : Delta Rising : Tier 6 Iconic Ship Stats )

Ship design occurred under the Andromeda Class Development Project moniker in 2409 . Its layout and systems resulted from compromises between the traditionalist, pragmatist, and progressivist factions within the Advanced Starship Design Bureau . The traditionalist camp argued for always having a multi-role exploration cruiser , including for sentimental value. The pragmatists and progressivists were convinced by building the USS Andromeda technologically advanced and wartime-ready.

The Andromeda exploration cruiser was earmarked for Operation Delta Rising , the project to expand the Khitomer Alliance into the Delta Quadrant in 2410 . ( STO Issue 03: "U.S.S. Andromeda NCC-92100")

The systems updates developed for the Andromeda -class were later reused in the Yamato -class dreadnought cruiser , a variant of the Galaxy X -class . ( STO video game : Delta Rising )

The design aesthetic, including deflector dish assembly and warp nacelles, were replicated on ships of other classes:

  • The Yamato -class dreadnought cruiser combined the Andromeda hull with the configuration of a Galaxy X -class dreadnought .
  • The Sutherland -class advanced research vessel placed Andromeda design on a Nebula -class science vessel configuration.
  • The Lafayette -class recon destroyer was an Andromeda -style redesign of the New Orleans -class frigate . ( STO - Klingon War mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

As of 2411 , the Andromeda -class remained the newest iteration of the Galaxy -class series of exploration cruisers. ( STO - Season 19: Legacy mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

Specifications [ ]

The Andromeda class was 695 meters long and a standard crew complement of 830. The back of the neck section was covered with MDMS passive sensor vanes. The size of its internal volume meant the Andromeda class was larger than the Galaxy - and Venture -classes . ( STO Issue 03: "U.S.S. Andromeda NCC-92100")

The molecular cohesion nullifier field .

In addition to standard Starfleet weapons and defenses, the Andromeda -class equipped a molecular cohesion nullifier field , a device that disrupted the molecular bonds in surrounding matter, increasing the effectiveness of the cruiser 's weapons. ( STO website : Delta Rising : Tier 6 Iconic Ship Stats )

The main ship components were saucer section , engineering hull , neck, nacelle pylons , and warp nacelles . At facilities supported by Starfleet Shipyards Operations , shipwrights could exchange these components with those of other compatible exploration cruiser classes: Galaxy , Galaxy ( refit ), Envoy , Monarch (cruiser) , Ross and Venture (cruiser) . ( STO - Klingon War mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

In the 25th century, the design of the Andromeda -class exploration cruiser allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases . These included the options Type 1-7, Upgrade and Veteran. ( STO - Klingon War mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance , the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion . ( STO missions : " Coliseum ", " Cold Storage ", " Boldly They Rode ")
