The Top 15 Things to Do in Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg may be well known as the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park —America’s busiest national park—but you don't have to leave town to experience the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. You'll find more things to do in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, than can be squeezed into a weekend trip. Gatlinburg boasts many opportunities to enjoy Appalachian culture beyond moonshine tastings and the many kitschy, family-friendly activities. If you're planning a trip, here's what to have on your list.

Shop for Local Art and Handicrafts

Gatlinburg Convention & Visitors Bureau

A seemingly endless amount of shopping is available right on Gatlinburg's main strip, but for authentic, locally produced Appalachian artwork, head out to the nearby Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community . The 8-mile driving loop is home to more than 100 artists and independent craftspeople selling their creations. Cliff Dwellers , one of the shops, dates back to 1933! Wares are authentic and handmade; imports aren’t allowed. Food, workshops, and demonstrations are available along the route.

To reach the artists’ loop, take Glades Road at Light #3 or jump on a trolley (Yellow Route).

Walk Across the SkyBridge

Suspended 150 feet above town, the Gatlinburg SkyBridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. The chairlift to the observation deck has been in operation since 1954. Once on top, you’ll enjoy some beautiful photo opportunities of Gatlinburg with the Smoky Mountains as a backdrop. Perhaps the most thrilling part of the 680-foot-long SkyBridge is walking across the 30 feet of glass panels at its midpoint.

Look for the SkyLift next to the historic Gatlinburg Inn ; the legendary song “Rocky Top” was written there in 1967.

See Sharks Up Close

There are plenty of indoor things to do along the strip, but one of the most memorable ways to spend a rainy afternoon is by visiting Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies . The popular attraction opened in 1997 and is home to the marvelous marine life you would expect at a world-class aquarium, along with some other exotic surprises.

Hike in the Great Smoky Mountains

Gatlinburg serves as a perfect base for exploring the most visited national park in the United States. Entrance to the park is free, and roads and facilities are very well maintained. Stop in at the Sugarlands Visitor Center (10 minutes into the national park on US-441) to enjoy exhibits and grab a map. Quite a few scenic trails to overlooks and waterfalls are available to suit your time and energy.

You can also walk into the national park via the Gatlinburg Trail; look for the trailhead at the south end of town. The leisurely Gatlinburg Trail is dog friendly (most in the national park are not) and follows a river 1.9 miles past the remains of old homesites to the Sugarlands Visitor Center.

Spend a Day at Anakeesta

Perched atop a mountain 600 feet above town, Anakeesta is a 70-acre theme park that quickly became one of the top things to do in Gatlinburg after opening in 2017. The beautifully manicured grounds feel like one big botanical garden set high in the mountains.

Along with food, drinks, and activities, Anakeesta is home to a unique observation tower that offers 360-degree views of the national park. The Treetop Skywalk (the longest in the United States) is over 880 feet of connected bridges suspended above the forest floor. Lucky guests can sometimes spot bears from the aerial vantage point.

Reach Anakeesta from the center of Gatlinburg by riding a Chondola chair lift or taking the “Ridge Rambler” to the summit.

Ride the Aerial Tramway to Ober

Ober is one of very few ski destinations in the southeastern U.S., but the 10 slopes, three chairlifts, and advanced snow-making capabilities draw a crowd. Indoor ice skating and a mountain coaster, alpine slide, maze, miniature golf, rock climbing, and other entertainment keep non-skiers busy. The massive lodge pleasantly held onto its 1970s vibe and hosts live music. A small wildlife area at Ober is home to black bears and other rescued creatures found in the region.

Ober is approximately 3 miles southwest of Gatlinburg. Get there by driving for 10 minutes on Ski Mountain Road. For more excitement, take the aerial tramway to the top.

Tour and Support Arrowmont

Located downtown, the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts began as a settler’s school founded by a women’s fraternity in 1912. The operation was instrumental in Gatlinburg’s early success and was home to the first electric generator, telephone, newspaper, and health clinic in the area.

Today, Arrowmont offers residencies, classes, and workshops. Visitors can visit the galleries and explore the grounds on foot; check the calendar for special events that support Arrowmont's philanthropic causes.

No list of things to do in Gatlinburg seems complete without a mention of moonshine. Legal moonshine has become big business in Gatlinburg; now, there’s wine, cider, and whiskey, too. The flavor spectrum leans toward fruity, but a few exceptions are available. Even if you don't partake in a tasting with free samples, you can still hear live Bluegrass music and learn a little about the operations. Ole Smoky Moonshine and Sugarlands Distilling Company are the most popular options, but you’ll see plenty of other places offering free tastings throughout Gatlinburg. Cheers!

Gatlinburg boasts several unique museums that will fit travelers of all kinds. Car and car-movie enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the collection of iconic cars featured in hit movies such as "Ghostbusters" and "Back to the Future" found at the Hollywood Star Cars Museum . The Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum is home to 20,000 sets of shakers that were collected by its owners over 35 years. Visitors are encouraged to play the large collection of rare pinball machines and retro arcade games at the Gatlinburg Pinball Museum , a must-see for any arcade lover. And Ripley’s Believe It or Not is a one-stop-shop for oddities ranging from shrunken heads to Zoltar machines in a sideshow atmosphere.

Drive to Newfound Gap

With an elevation of 5,048 feet, Newfound Gap is arguably the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the national park there in 1940. The 16-mile drive from Gatlinburg offers plenty of scenic overlooks and beautiful views of Mount LeConte.

If you’ve ever wanted to take a short walk on the famous Appalachian Trail , you can do so at Newfound Gap. You may even see thru-hikers bound for Katahdin, Maine, a grueling 1,972 miles away! Along with enjoying the views, you can straddle the state line and stand with one foot in Tennessee and the other in North Carolina.

Walk and Play on the Strip

Gatlinburg’s main strip is pleasantly pedestrianized with lots to see and do. You’ll find galleries, arcades, candy shops, and kitschy attractions tucked between eateries and souvenir shops. The options for family-friendly entertainment are many, or you can simply stroll and people watch.

The main strip gets chaotic on summer weekends. For some tranquility, duck into the Village Shops , a cobblestone nook with a fountain and benches reminiscent of Europe.

Enjoy Live Country Music

Gatlinburg has never really been known for its nightlife, but some exciting new options are popping up. Country music star Blake Shelton’s Ole Red is a two-story bar and restaurant wrapped around a large stage. Daily live music from well-known performers keeps the new venue packed. Big acts regularly take the stage—most are planned, but some are unexpected, so keep your eyes peeled.

Celebrate Holidays Differently

Although July is the busiest month in Gatlinburg, it’s also when you can see the first Independence Day parade held in the United States each year. Gatlinburg’s award-winning parade begins at 12:01 a.m. every July 4 and features patriotic floats along with an Army band.

Summer isn't the only time to celebrate. Gatlinburg is lit up and especially festive for Christmas. Even Oktoberfest gets observed in a big way at Ober.

Experience Appalachian History at Ely’s Mill

Located less than 10 minutes outside of town along Roaring Fork Road, Ely’s Mill was built in 1925. Today, it’s an outdoor event space that backs up to the national park. You can see the historic mill, enjoy a unique 100-year-old shop, or just relax in the clean air by the rushing river. Cabin rentals are also available.

Sleep Somewhere Unique

You could stay at a regular hotel in town—there are plenty— or rent a cabin , but why not stay somewhere unforgettable? One of the few national parks that does not charge an admission fee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also the most visited, welcoming more than 10 million travelers annually. The 522,427-acre park is shared by Tennessee and North Carolina, with the border running through the center. In addition to hiking and horseback riding trails, the park offers historical exhibits, original Appalachian cabins, special biking events and scenic drives to popular spots like Cades Cove and the rushing mountain streams of Roaring Fork Motor Trail. If you love seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, Cades Cove is a great place to spot deer and black bears. Start your trip at the Sugarlands Visitor Center (4 miles southwest of Gatlinburg) to get an overview of the area's history and pick up trail maps. Alternatively, head to "the locals' entrance" at Greenbrier about 6 miles east of downtown. Trailheads to Ramsey Cascades, Porters Creek and Grapeyard Ridge start here, and it's often less crowded than nearby areas of the park.

The ride reaches a maximum speed of 30 mph, is set to upbeat pop jams and is thoughtfully decorated with colorful laser lights.

This quirky museum hosts a wide collection of noteworthy cars once owned by a variety of celebrities, used in movies or showcased in television shows. The museum displays the cars with accompanying props and effects to set the scene. Some of the most popular vehicles in the museum include the Batmobile from the 1966 "Batman" television show, Dolly Parton's Cadillac D'Elegance, the 1982 truck from "Twister" and a special collection of vehicles from the "Fast & Furious" movie series.

Visitors said the museum packed a punch and had some exciting cars in the collection. They appreciated the fun movie, show and newscast clips playing throughout that showed the cars in their original roles. Museumgoers noted that it's a great stop with kids and for movie buffs.

The Ober Gatlinburg Amusement Park and Ski Area is open 365 days a year. From mid-December to mid-March, skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes and nonskiers enjoy snow tubing. The amusement park, which offers a mountain coaster, an indoor ice-skating rink, a carousel, shops, restaurants and a small zoo, is open year-round. Although the resort itself does not offer accommodations, its location less than 5 miles west of Gatlinburg makes it easy to find lodging. You can drive up to the resort (parking is $20) or take the aerial tram from downtown Gatlinburg. The aerial tramway, one of the country's largest tramways, offers a bird's-eye view of the area along a 2.1-mile ride up to the mountain's 2,813-foot peak.

Visitors raved about the ice skating, bumper cars and the overall variety of entertainment choices, but bemoaned the long lines for activities. They also mentioned that the experience felt overpriced. Recent travelers loved the views from the aerial tram but said that it could get crowded during peak season. Some recommended only purchasing a ticket for the aerial tram to save money and enjoy the park's most unique experience.

While most visitors agreed that the view from the observation deck was breathtaking, many noted it can feel a little scary being up that high. Other bemoaned the slow elevators to get to the top. Several mentioned finding coupons to make that attraction more affordable.

But visitors can also go on unguided tours through the mansion's winding staircases, secret passageways, and dark chambers, where zombies and other frights may be hiding.

Recent visitors praised the lengths that the haunted mansion's actors went to so they remained in character and noted that their roles (which include a werewolf and a clown) prompted some true screams and jumps from tour groups walking through. Some travelers mentioned, however, that lines to get in can be long during the peak season and the experience once inside can feel rushed.

Are you planning a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to visit the  Great Smoky Mountains National Park ?  The capital of Appalachian Disneyland, you’ll find a bit of mountain magic here for everyone! Here are ten things you need to know to visit Gatlinburg plus my best secret Gatlinburg travel tips!

Here are my best tips for planning a trip to Gatlinburg!

Where to Stay: Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Sevierville?

If you want to go out in Gatlinburg at night (to enjoy the nightlife or a nighttime tour like this  Haunted Gatlinburg tour ), then you should stay in the town proper. However, if you only want to visit Gatlinburg during the day, you can stay in nearby Pigeon Forge or Sevierville. Keep in mind that there are drives of up to an hour between the towns due to the increased traffic that tourism brings to the area.

I stayed in Knoxville and came down for the day, but there are many  great resorts and lodges in Gatlinburg  to choose from so that you don’t have to leave at night! Our drive back was almost ninety minutes in the rain after dark – yuck!

Should you save or splurge on a place to stay? If you want to wake up with a gorgeous mountain view, it may cost you a bit extra, but the scenery here is definitely worth it! Look for Gatlinburg resorts that have updated lodging and nice amenities like a pool, hot tub, and either a mountain or a river view.

There are also cabin rentals, which will give you some privacy if that’s what you’re looking for!

Start the Day with a Hearty Breakfast – of Pancakes!

The region is famous for its pancakes and pancake houses, so even if you only come for one day, you have to eat some pancakes! Some places close around 2 pm, but there are places, like the oldest pancake house in the area, the Pancake Pantry, which stays open until 4 pm.

You can get regular pancakes, or cover them in fruit. You can even get buckwheat pancakes and other regional staples you may not get all the time back home!

Safety First!

Whether it’s watching out for bears in the park or pickpockets in town, you need to keep your wits about you while you are here.

A backpack or purse with RFID technology along with good park safety will go a long way here. Think sunscreen, bug spray, and wallets and purses that can’t be tampered with.

Don’t Skip a Visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park!

If you will only be in the area for a day, you can easily fit in a quick drive (think one or two hours) and drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. If you have more time, here’s how to spend an  entire day in the park  from Gatlinburg, including a visit to Cades Cove, Clingmans Dome, and the Newfound Gap.

The park is huge, spanning multiple states, so don’t expect to tackle it all in one Gatlinburg vacation. Instead, set some goals for your trip or agree to just go with the flow!

While in the park, you can see bears, deer, wildflowers, trees, waterfalls, and so much more!

Spend Some Time in Downtown Gatlinburg

Many of the best things to do in Downtown Gatlinburg are within walking distance of one another along the Parkway. Make sure to enjoy some of the town’s great eateries (like the Alamo Steakhouse), along with shopping in some of the city of Gatlinburg’s more eclectic stores.

Some highlights you won’t want to miss include visiting a distillery and going moonshine tasting!

Plan What You Want to Do Ahead of Time

The area that people think of as Gatlinburg and the surrounding towns have so many things to do that it can be a bit overwhelming! Gatlinburg offers something for everyone, so a little planning can make it feel less overwhelming once you’re here.

You can pick up a  Sightseeing Flex Pass  which will allow you to choose your own mountain adventures like visiting Ripley’s Aquarium, the Aquarium of the Smokies, Anakeesta Theme Park, walking above Gatlinburg on the Ober Gatlinburg, and many more local attractions and amusement parks. 

If you want to go to Dollywood, note that its located in nearby Pigeon Forge. However, if you just want to pay homage to Dolly Parton, you can visit the statue of her in her hometown of Sevierville.

You might also want to consider what you’ll want to do in Gatlinburg that’s outside of the downtown Gatlinburg area. There are hiking trails, a crafts community, mini golf, rafting, a sky lift, and even a private  helicopter tour.  

There’s enough to on your Smoky Mountain vacation that the whole family can have a great time!

Consider Going on a Guided (or Self-Guided) Tour

If planning your trip is feeling a bit overwhelming, add a few guided tours so that you know you’ll be in good hands while you explore the area. A few that I’ve done or that are highly recommended:

Haunted Gatlinburg Tour  – I did this while in Gatlinburg and it was so fun and spooky! You meet your tour guide downtown and go on a walking tour of the haunted sites in Gatlinburg!

Foxfire Mountain: Hiking & Swinging Bridge Family Adventure  – If you’re looking to explore the outdoors, this tour will cross the Swinging Bridge to Prosperity, a 335-foot bridge to Prosperity Mountain!

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Self Driving Trip  – If you want some tips and information while you visit the park, this is the way to go!

Pigeon Forge: Helicopter Tour of Gatllinburg  – We didn’t get to do this because we were traveling with a toddler, but this is my dream activity the next time we road trip through Tennessee.

Sightseeing Flex Pass  – I mentioned this before, but this is a great way to plan your activities and fun things to do in advance and save money at the same time.

Expect to Pay for Parking!

If you plan to drive your car to downtown Gatlinburg, expect to pay for parking, because everywhere it can cost from $10 to $20 to park for the day. Some restaurants and attractions advertise that they have free parking (which is awesome), but they tend to be outside of the most congested part of the city center.

If you do pay, note that once you leave, you cannot return without paying again. So think about this ahead of time if you plan on leaving quickly.

You can use the Gatlinburg Trolley to save money and park on the outskirts of town. If you’re staying in town overnight, you can use the trolley to get around to avoid paying to park. Note that your hotel or resort might also have a parking fee.

I budgeted quite a bit of money for parking for our trip, and I was still shocked at how much I spent on parking in Gatlinburg. 

Make sure to have cash available since storms can knock out the power. While we were in town, all the power went out for hours and this meant you couldn’t pay for anything with a credit card or app.

How to Get to Gatlinburg

If you’re coming to Gatlinburg for a quick getaway, the easiest way to reach the city is by car. We drove in on our big Southern USA road trip, and the drive was easy. You don’t get into real mountain driving until you actually enter the national park.

There is a small airport in Gatlinburg (the Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Airport), but this is really for rich people on private planes. Most folks drive or fly into Atlanta, Charlotte, or Nashville, and then they will drive to Gatlinburg. The drive from these cities ranges from three to four hours, and all three airports offer rental cars that you can arrange ahead of time. 

I use  Discover Cars when I rent cars on my travels. You’ll be able to pick up a car at any airport or in your hometown.

While the Knoxville airport tends to be an expensive airport to connect to, the drive is just a little over an hour (unless you get unlucky like us, and encounter a lot of rain).

What to Bring with You to Gatlinburg

Whether you’re going on a Gatlinburg honeymoon or a family vacation, there are a few things that everyone will want to bring with them.

A  camera . While it’s great to have a cell phone with you for quick pics, if you want to do more serious photography or take more videos, I find it nice to travel with a separate dedicated camera as well.

If I will be wrestling with my toddler on the trip, I’ll grab my  Sony ZV-1 , which is a powerful compact camera with great video capabilities as well. If it’s just me, I’ll take my  Nikon   (though if you’re buying a new camera I have my eye on this  Sony ).

Backup Charging Bank  for your cell phone since you’ll be using it as a camera, GPS, and general travel genie. The mountains can drain your battery since it will take more power to continually check for signal where the signal gets spotty.

A Great Day Bag   so you can carry what you need with you (like your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, cash, etc). My current favorite is the  Pacsafe Citysafe ,  which is especially great for tourist destinations because it has many anti-theft features designed to deter pickpockets plus RFID technology to keep your credit card digits safe. It also transitions to a night bag more easily and won’t embarrass you if you go to dinner directly after sightseeing all day. 

Tips for Saving Money in Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg is pricey! Between hotels, attractions, and meals, you can quickly blow your budget. Here are a few ways to keep your trip budget down:

~Use the trolley to avoid paying for parking.

~Have your nice meal at lunch and a more budget-friendly option for dinner (or cook dinner in your vacation rental).

~Look for deals on attractions beforehand (like using the  Sightseeing Flex Pass )

~Keep cash on you to avoid paying any credit card transaction fees (and they exist)

~Spend more time in the national park (which is free) and less time in the town shopping

Moon U.S. Civil Rights Trail: A Traveler’s Guide to the People, Places, and Events that Made the Movement  – we did a lot of Civil Rights and Civil War historic sites on our trip, and if you’ll be doing any of this kind of travel, make sure to get this. It was invaluable for finding off-the-beaten-path sites and can’t miss Black-owned historic businesses.

It is a 6 mile drive through the mountains with awesome places to stop along the way and take photos, see wild animals like bears and deer — and really get a glimpse of Gatlinburg in its true beauty.

Fort Fun Gatlinburg

Fort Fun Gatlinburg is located in downtown Gatlinburg. There is so much fun to be had here such as laser tag, roller coaster simulators, mini-golf, bumper cars, and more.

It is one of the best places to take kids of all ages for a day of fun.

Clingman's Dome

Another great free attraction you can check out while in Gatlinburg is Clingman's Dome . This amazing trek is something that everyone must see.

Granted, the walk up is like walking up a mountain, but once you get to the top — you will love the view from up there!

Out of all the fun attractions in Gatlinburg, Anakeesta was one of my favorites. There is a ton of things to do here for all ages — including the dueling Ziplines!

They also offer mountain coaster rides, a beautiful garden to sit and take in, shopping and all the amazing food you can eat.

Ole Smoky Distillery Tour

If you are downtown Gatlinburg doing some shopping, be sure and check out the distillery tour at Ole Smoky . Not only do you get to see how legal moonshine is made, but you also get to taste the different flavors available.

Shopping and Other Fun Things in Gatlinburg

Arts and Crafts Community

One of the most awesome things they have in Gatlinburg is an Arts and Crafts community where you can shop until your heart's content for homemade items made by local artisans.

There are broom makers, pottery makers, glass blowers and more. It is definitely some of the best shopping I did while in Gatlinburg.

Fowler's Clay Works

Not only can you shop until your heart's content but in the arts and crafts community, you can also take classes. One of my favorites was the pottery class we took at Fowler's Clay Works .

Here you can learn about the heritage of how pottery came to be in Gatlinburg, purchase a few pieces of pottery and make your very own piece to take home with you!

Best Places to Eat in Gatlinburg

While in Gatlinburg, we ate at several places — in downtown Gatlinburg, and through the heart of the arts and crafts community.

Three Jimmy's

Three Jimmy's is a great atmosphere and place to bring the whole family. They have amazing food choices from bbq to burgers to chicken and ribs. You will not be disappointed here.

Split Rail Eats

Another great restaurant we had the chance to eat at while in Gatlinburg was Split Rail Eats , which is located in the Covered Bridge district in the Arts and Crafts Community .

Timbers Log Cabin Restaurant

Another great restaurant in Gatlinburg (it’s listed #3 out of 177 on Trip Advisor) is the Timber’s Log Cabin Restaurant . This place is a bit more pricey than the others I listed, but it is SO worth it.

No Way Jose

Find delicious and authentic Mexican food at No Way Jose’s ! The outside seating area is perfect. They have the best tacos. ( I mean, I should know right because I am all about Mexican food!)

Crockett's Breakfast Camp

Crockett’s offers some of THE BEST breakfast you will taste in Gatlinburg! If you visit here, these are some dishes you need to try —

• Cousin Dave’s Iron Horse Omelet
• Elk Mountain Grande Burrito
• White Oak Flats Eggs Benedict
• Grandma Hattie’s French Toast
• Giant Cinnamon Rolls

Where to Stay

The Appy Lodge

The Appy Lodge is located at the entrance of downtown Gatlinburg. It is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed in. It is very budget-friendly and offers a ton of fun things for the kids to do right on the property.

Cabin Fever Vacations

Another great place to stay if you are coming to Gatlinburg and want the “cabin in the woods feel” is Cabin Fever Vacations . They have all kinds of cabins and styles to choose from.

We chose one that slept 24 and included an inground pool and hot tub.

Gatlinburg is a resort town located in eastern Tennessee . It is a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park . Downtown Gatlinburg may come as somewhat of a shock for those on their way to a nature getaway in the national park — from the Space Needle to the amusement rides, the town hasn't necessarily chosen to embrace its "nature" side. That said, there is plenty of lodging, restaurants, and other amenities to make this town a useful base for exploring the park.

The town's development is closely tied to that of the national park, which was opened in 1934. While in 1912 the town had only six houses, by 1935 over 500,000 visitors were passing through the town each year, and today over 9 million people each year visit the park. The town, which has a permanent population of only 3,900 people (2019), grew quickly to accommodate the influx, but has had to deal with issues of urban sprawl and air quality as a result of the huge numbers of outsiders that pass through. Gatlinburg is a typical tourist town, with many attractions and quirky shops lining the Parkway.

By car [ edit ]

Gatlinburg is best reached by the north by taking I-40 to Tennessee Route 66 south. Follow Tennessee Route 66 to US 441 in Sevierville and follow US 441 through Pigeon Forge and into Gatlinburg.

From the west, Gatlinburg can be reached by either US 441 (from Knoxville ) or US 411 and US 321 (from Maryville, TN ).

From the south, US 441 passes through the heart of the Smokies, bringing in traffic from Cherokee, NC. It is about 35 miles from Cherokee to Gatlinburg, but the high volume of tourist traffic on the road can make the trip at least an hour long.

From the east, US 321 brings in traffic directly from I-40 coming in from North Carolina.

Gatlinburg is a very popular resort town, which can be a nightmare for drivers during the peak summer months, especially on weekends. If you are headed to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park it is best to use the Gatlinburg Bypass to avoid the traffic delays. Once you are in town, there are several short cuts to get you through town and off the main drag!

Get around [ edit ]

Gatlinburg offers a trolley that takes tourists around the town without fighting the traffic. There are several park-and-ride locations: the Gatlinburg Visitor Center has free parking and access to the purple route; the Gatlinburg Mass Transit Center (located behind the Ripley's Aquarium) offers pay parking and access to all trolley routes. The Gatlinburg Bypass allows traffic heading into the National Park from the north to bypass the Gatlinburg business district. There are scenic vistas along this road as well.

Most visitors to Gatlinburg are here due to the close proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park , and the surrounding outdoor adventures, but for those who want to escape from nature there are a vast number of attractions in town, ranging from interesting to educational to tacky & bizarre.

Visitors to town will likely spend their days in Great Smoky Mountains National Park enjoying activities such as hiking along the Appalachian Trail , but for those looking for adventure rides, arcades, water parks, or other diversions there is plenty to choose from in town.

Topping the list was the Outer Banks in North Carolina, where the daily cost per person was $177.

“We ranked Outer Banks as the least expensive destination, where the allure of the Atlantic meets affordability,” the company shared in a news release . “With the lowest accommodation costs at $91.44, combined with meals at $60 and attractions adding up to $11.27, the daily cost per person stands at a mere $177. A week-long stay here amounts to $1,237.024 per person, making it an irresistible offer for a family of four at just $3,247.90, proving that paradise doesn’t have to cost a fortune.”

Hot on its heels was Charleston, West Virginia. This small town boasts myriad activities to enjoy for less than $180 per day. Notably, Charleston houses the West Virginia State Museum , a treasure trove of history, culture and art. As one Redditor put it, “I would beg my dad to go when we would visit family.”

Georgia boasts two affordable treasures on the list: Helen and Tybee Island, ranking third and fourth, respectively. These picturesque towns provide a delightful mix of natural beauty and exciting attractions for the whole family that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Rounding out the top five was Gatlinburg, Tennessee, a gateway to the majestic Great Smoky Mountains. With its stunning scenery, pleasant downtown and friendly atmosphere, Gatlinburg proves unforgettable experiences can come at an affordable price, according to OptimosTravel.
